[01:20:49] PatrickDickey: Quick question. In setup, I have my audio set to 5.1 surround, and can hear each speaker when I test them. But, when I play recordings, I only get the sound in the front two speakers, and it's about 75% as loud as it should be. How do I fix this? In every other application, I have audio in all of my speakers. (Ubuntu 12.10 with a SoundMax audio card).
[01:24:58] jams: PatrickDickey i'm assuming the source material is 2.0 ?
[01:25:25] jams: it's possible to enable upmixing in the audio setup so that 2.0 will get converted to 5.1
[01:26:40] PatrickDickey: jams: How do I find out? I've got a separate backend, so I'll have to check there, I'm guessing.
[01:28:53] PatrickDickey: I do have another issue that may be related. When I'm in setup, if I check the "Use Highest Quality" on the test speakers menu, I lose audio in all but the left side. It's like it reconfigures which speaker is where. For example, Front Left and Center are the Front Left speaker, and Rear Left and LFE are the Rear Left Speaker.
[01:28:55] jams: the upmixer can be enabled in the menu during playback menu->audio->enable upmixer
[01:30:12] jams: menu->playback->playback data will show info about the number of channels inthe audio stream
[01:30:46] PatrickDickey: Thanks. I'll check that out.
[01:31:55] jams: hope it helps
[01:34:02] PatrickDickey: Actually I've got all sorts of issues.. LOL Whenever I start Mythfrontend, it opens up the setup screen (Language selections) and then takes me to the page where I set the password. I've checked my mysql.txt file, and the correct password is there. However in the setup, it shows a different one (originally I installed both mythbackend and frontend on this computer).
[01:35:43] PatrickDickey: Ok, so in playback data, channels is set to 2 Audio is MPEG-2. In Menu -> Audio, I have Disable upmixer. So it's supposed to be doing it, but isn't.
[01:36:32] ** PatrickDickey isn't above doing a complete purge of mythtv on the computer and starting over.... **
[01:37:19] jams: i assume it's spdif out?
[01:37:55] PatrickDickey: If you mean regular 3.5mm jacks, yes. Also, if I disable Upmixer the volume is louder--but it's still only in the front two speakers.
[01:39:51] PatrickDickey: The soundcard is a CM8738 (SoundBlaster 7.1 surround card). I mistakenly put SoundMax earlier.

[05:58:59] skd5aner: jya: what exactly is the issue when you try to play it back? it stutters or the buffer doesn't keep up?
[05:59:19] jya: it stutters, pause play pause play
[05:59:24] jya: unwatchable
[06:00:20] jya: Beirdo: how can I find out which myth:// URL is being used when playing the file through mythfrontend
[06:00:23] skd5aner: whole movie, or just the main menu... a guy named "pepper" has come around recently with some patches for dvd related issues
[06:00:51] skd5aner: he recently fixed the stuttering menu issue, wonder if that could have broke something with playback?
[06:00:53] Beirdo: not sure off-hand, there's gotta be a log message at some level/verbose that will show that
[06:01:11] skd5aner: -v network?
[06:01:13] jya: I don;t attempt to play the whole movie, it stutters instantly
[06:01:26] Beirdo: sounds likely
[06:01:28] skd5aner: in menu, or in movie?
[06:01:36] Beirdo: or just tcpdump the port if ya have to
[06:01:56] jya: i would have hoped that info is in the log somewhere
[06:02:29] Beirdo: I'm sure it is... somewhere
[06:02:51] Beirdo: I haven't looked at that part of the code for a while
[06:02:55] skd5aner: jya: -v network?
[06:03:09] Beirdo: and tonight, I'll be debugging this phone for hours... soo...
[06:03:12] jya: uh… it plays now
[06:03:20] skd5aner: jya: also, here's the commit I was referring to: https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/5d8e8 . . . 5d1cd18c426f
[06:03:35] jya: ahhh
[06:03:49] jya: that's because myth is using the direct NFS mounted disk instead
[06:04:00] jya: instead of going over the storage group
[06:04:19] skd5aner: yea, if it can find it local, doesn't it default to it... an NFS mount is cosnidered "local" by mythtv
[06:04:53] skd5aner: also ensures encrypted ISOs work, if I recall
[06:04:56] Beirdo: makes sense
[06:05:51] skd5aner: jya: that commit did solve several dvds that stuttered for me in the menus, although playback of the feature itself never stuttered
[06:06:42] skd5aner: and, I do see stutter from VDPAU on some of my corrupted recordings since 0.26, but I'm not sure if that's the kind of stuttering your seeing
[06:07:10] jya: skd5aner: I'm not in a dvd… and locally the file plays fine (or over NFS
[06:07:28] skd5aner: oh, just mkv rips of the main feature or something I guess?
[06:07:34] skd5aner: ok.. gotcha
[06:07:56] jya: skd5aner: that's right.. it's just a AVI created with Handbrake
[06:08:19] skd5aner: cool – just trying to do some recall of recent comments and tickets related to stutter :)
[06:08:24] jya: i make them just as big as they have to be so I can fit as many as possible
[06:08:38] skd5aner: yea, handbrake is pretty nice
[06:09:30] skd5aner: Beirdo: btw – nuvexport completely bombs for me in 0.26 :( I did submit a bug report a few weeks ago, but just wanted to give you a heads up if you ever think about taking a look
[06:09:43] skd5aner: seems to be a bindings issue
[06:10:09] skd5aner: undeclared variable
[06:10:19] skd5aner: or, unused, or something... don't recall off top of my head
[06:17:18] Beirdo: ahh, yeah, ffmpeg change I think

[06:18:51] wagnerrp: no
[06:19:03] wagnerrp: IRC channel and mailing lists only
[06:19:08] |thunder: i cant get lirc to build on debian. thats where i'm at...
[06:19:11] wagnerrp: there are some independent and distro-specific forums
[06:19:19] |thunder: interesting
[06:20:01] |thunder: anyone here a wiz at decoding error log from a "m-a a-i lirc" failure ? ima paste.bin

[06:21:28] |thunder: that's the tail of it. only place any errors occured
[06:22:23] wagnerrp: why are you building lirc?
[06:22:27] skd5aner: I think everyone universally hates lirc, and once it's setup and works, they don't touch it and easily forgets everything the had to learn to get it to work... sometimes, it's easy, sometimes it's painful
[06:22:32] skd5aner: agreed...
[06:22:35] skd5aner: apt-get install lirc
[06:22:41] |thunder: because the meta-package on debian is mega fuxxord
[06:22:59] |thunder: it does not function, at all
[06:23:13] wagnerrp: for that matter, why are you running 2.6.32 and a 32-bit kernel still?
[06:23:26] wagnerrp: LIRC kernel modules have been in the kernel source tree for years
[06:23:26] skd5aner: are you installing this on an existing machine, or are you building everything from scratch on a fresh debian install?
[06:23:26] |thunder: because my computer is old
[06:23:34] wagnerrp: since 2.6.35 or 36
[06:23:42] |thunder: eh
[06:24:06] wagnerrp: no need to compile anything (kernel side), the modules just come with the kernel
[06:24:12] |thunder: dont know. im sorry. I installed the latest debian 6.0 and upgraded the kernel
[06:24:13] wagnerrp: still need lircd externally
[06:24:50] skd5aner: if you are doing it from scratch, and want to play with mythtv, use a mythtv based distro like mythbuntu, which is basically a cousin of debian if you are most familiar with that OS style
[06:25:07] skd5aner: lirc, all the stuff, is already pre-configured – you just have to fill in the blanks
[06:26:07] skd5aner: avoid all the manual headaches... and debian is notorious for not updating their packages frequently enough, espcially for mythtv
[06:26:24] skd5aner: or, I should say, whomever maintains those packages
[06:26:31] |thunder: hmm, ok, honestly im just a guy with a debian install and a MCE remote and reciever that'd i'd like working. I found a kick ass install guide on your wiki, but it bails when the package is supposed to build. The article IS for debian 4.0 though
[06:27:01] skd5aner: heh – yea, I'm sure it's probably a little stale
[06:27:24] skd5aner: you can make it work, it's just a lot more manual intervention to do so
[06:27:33] skd5aner: mythtbuntu is as close to "out of the box" as it gets
[06:27:47] |thunder: thanks for the help skd5aner and wagnerrp. much apprech you both
[06:27:53] skd5aner: np, good luck
[06:27:57] skd5aner: come back if you need more assistance

[06:28:29] sheppard: ugh
[06:28:30] wagnerrp: note that in some cases, you don't even need lirc
[06:28:35] sheppard: wtf keeps blowing away my lircd.conf
[06:28:48] sheppard: and hardware.conf
[06:28:49] wagnerrp: as you can access the remote through X and the integrated lirc modules
[06:28:51] skd5aner: wagnerrp: I didn't use it for several years :)

[06:29:49] |thunder: wagnerrp; there are no kernel modules present on my system anywhere. i was trying to build them. idk, i think debian hides them in their furthest reaches
[06:30:08] wagnerrp: |thunder: right, LIRC was not integrated until i think 6.36
[06:30:28] ** |thunder shakes at the thought of a dist-upgrade **
[06:30:46] skd5aner: wagnerrp: yea, it was actually an IR keyboard I bought, and then used a harmony remote to levearge the IR keyboards keys and IR Receiver...
[06:30:52] skd5aner: I wouldn't do it again
[06:31:04] wagnerrp: didn't know those operated on the same protocol
[06:31:24] skd5aner: wagnerrp: it took me 3 tries (in 2005) to find one that did
[06:31:57] skd5aner: and even then, it had press and release codes that harmony didn't like – I had to work with their tech support to manually update the hex – since thye don't allow the end-user to actually do that
[06:32:12] skd5aner: but, not worth that kind of effort in today's world
[06:32:19] skd5aner: and I've got a significantly better remote now
[06:32:36] skd5aner: it mimics an MCE USB remote, works great
[06:32:46] wagnerrp: it would be nice if they actually had configuration software for the harmony
[06:32:46] skd5aner: well, it's programmed to do so, I should say
[06:33:05] skd5aner: wagnerrp: yea, the harmony remotes were promising – then logitech bought them :/
[06:33:24] wagnerrp: well i mean it's a configuration website
[06:33:37] wagnerrp: and the software only acts as a communication layer between the two
[06:33:40] skd5aner: and between me and some family members, I've seen 4 go bad simply from the contacts wearing down
[06:33:43] wagnerrp: slow, buggy, and annoying
[06:33:52] wagnerrp: contacts are easy enough
[06:33:58] wagnerrp: just a dab of solder
[06:34:13] wagnerrp: i've had to do that on most of my logitech rechargeable gear
[06:34:49] skd5aner: wagnerrp: I tried some contact repair stuff I found at Frys... worked well for about 6 months before it wore off
[06:35:15] wagnerrp: well that's the thing about solder
[06:35:25] wagnerrp: once it gets scratched down and no longer makes contact
[06:35:37] wagnerrp: it's all of a couple seconds to reflow the stuff and fix it
[06:35:37] skd5aner: how do you get he solder to stick to the membrane? or are you talking about soldering it some other way?
[06:35:51] skd5aner: soldering the contact itself?
[06:35:57] skd5aner: wouldn't that close the circuit?
[06:36:13] wagnerrp: i'm talking about the charging contacts
[06:36:16] wagnerrp: what are you talking about?
[06:36:19] skd5aner: button contacts
[06:36:36] wagnerrp: oh, different issue
[06:36:37] skd5aner: rubber membrane that makes contact with the buttons on the board
[06:36:58] skd5aner: conductive coating on the bottom of hte button membrane that registers the button press
[06:37:32] wagnerrp: yeah, i did notice a couple of the buttons got flaky
[06:38:14] skd5aner: I know I've bragged about it before, but this is my current remote – love it http://www.mynevo.com/html.php?page_id=345
[06:38:32] skd5aner: controlls my lighting too
[06:38:50] skd5aner: nice SDK too
[06:39:35] skd5aner: not so sure about the health of the company however
[06:40:27] skd5aner: ah, forgot they are the same company that makes the all-for-one remotes
[06:40:47] wagnerrp: i thought that was RCA
[06:41:17] wagnerrp: no, those were all-in-one or something

[06:47:15] skd5aner: but I always thought it'd be cool to get an S70 now and program it to use the HTTP controls and/or APIs since it's a web based device
[06:48:45] skd5aner: the q50 can do serial control, but obviously not something I'm interested in trying to figure out for controlling a frontne,d but nice for AV equipment in a cabinet or other room since it leverages RF/z-wave
