[04:16:56] wagnerrp: that is one option
[04:17:07] wagnerrp: i believe the default is to notify you, but not automatically skip
[04:17:15] dfgas-cr48: ahhh

[04:19:01] dfgas-cr48: do i have to transcode it afterwards?
[04:19:58] wagnerrp: no, mythtv keeps trac of the commercial markers and will handle them internally
[04:19:59] Blaksmith: also, when I try to fast forward, just to see if whatever will kick it, I get static until I forward or back a few times, or totally exit the recording.. then sound goes to normal
[04:20:22] wagnerrp: you only need to transcode if you want to use those commercial markers in something other than mythfrontend
[04:20:54] dfgas-cr48: ahh

[04:32:00] wagnerrp: Blaksmith: this is a dedicated frontend?
[04:32:21] Blaksmith: no, my desktop
[04:32:30] wagnerrp: as in... not a backend
[04:32:36] Blaksmith: oh yes then
[04:32:44] wagnerrp: why did you run mythtv-setup?
[04:32:57] Blaksmith: I didn't
[04:33:03] wagnerrp: you had to have
[04:33:04] Blaksmith: emerge mythtv ...
[04:33:37] wagnerrp: lines 27–29 say you're only listening on localhost, which means you told it to only listen there
[04:33:38] Blaksmith: I stripped out my old machine, kept the same IP, so the settings were saved from before
[04:34:13] wagnerrp: ah, well you may want to go into mythtv-setup and blank out the two backend IP settings on your desktop
[04:34:28] wagnerrp: as it is currently configured, it is not accessible from the network
[04:34:50] Blaksmith: well, I am able to watch playback on my desktop now
[04:35:04] wagnerrp: what video card?
[04:35:08] Blaksmith: it was the "Use GUI size for TV Playback"

[04:35:29] Blaksmith: nVidia GTX 660 Ti .. was working in ubuntu, but converted it to gentoo
[04:35:39] Blaksmith: well, it's all good now though :)
[04:35:42] wagnerrp: if that was unchecked, it would try to change the resolution to match the video
[04:35:57] Blaksmith: I think it was unchecked from before, which worked ok
[04:36:04] wagnerrp: with that card, you'll want to use OpenGL or VDPAU High Quality
[04:36:09] Blaksmith: because it always was "fit to screen"
[04:36:59] wagnerrp: where as now, your "screen" is some funky 3840x2104... is that RANDR doing that, or do you actually have some strange multi-monitor setup?
[04:37:19] Blaksmith: I have a funky multi-monitor setup
[04:37:33] Blaksmith: I have 3 in an L shape ..
[04:37:53] wagnerrp: 1280+1024?

[04:39:55] Blaksmith: just selected OpenCL High Quality
[04:40:38] Blaksmith: but now, another problem .. when I fast forward.. I get static
[04:40:57] Blaksmith: what could cause that?
[04:42:41] wagnerrp: like analog noise static?
[04:42:46] Blaksmith: yes
[04:42:50] wagnerrp: no idea
[04:43:20] Blaksmith: pulseaudio .. if that might be a key?
[04:43:29] luckyphuq (luckyphuq!~dale@75.80.25.225) has joined #mythtv-users
[04:43:36] Blaksmith: I remember that a ways back, pulse had issues
[04:43:53] wagnerrp: just a burst of static?
[04:44:12] Blaksmith: stays static until I ff or rw a couple times, then it plays the audio fine
[04:44:12] wagnerrp: if you are using pulseaudio, and allowing mythtv to access ALSA beneath pulseaudio
[04:44:26] wagnerrp: it will disable pulseaudio while playing
[04:44:47] Blaksmith: no, I have mythtv to use pulseaudio:default
[04:44:52] wagnerrp: however other applications will queue up sounds, that will be emitted as a burst of noise when playback is stopped and pulseaudio is enabled again
[04:45:09] Blaksmith: let me double check the audi osettings
[04:45:13] wagnerrp: some kind of complication with a digital audio output?
[04:45:44] Blaksmith: let me see if Jack gives that isse.
[04:46:03] Blaksmith: yes, I have a complex setup .. needed for other software .. alsa as base, jack on top of alsa, then pulse on top of jack
[04:46:16] wagnerrp: yuck
[04:46:21] wagnerrp: if you have jack, why bother with pulse?
[04:46:22] Blaksmith: ok, jack wkrs
[04:46:30] Blaksmith: no static issue
[04:46:48] Blaksmith: most programs don't use jack, so I need pulse
[04:46:56] Blaksmith: yah, I'm complex lol
[04:47:02] Blaksmith: but i think I'm all set :)
[04:47:12] wagnerrp: jack has no similar alsa emulation?
[04:47:26] Blaksmith: not that I have found
[04:47:38] wagnerrp: i mean as far as sound servers go, jack is heads above pulse
[04:47:44] wagnerrp: it just lacks a convenient UI
[04:48:05] xris: wow, the scheduler is really confused… "no, I won't record this show today, I can record it next sunday instead"
[04:48:09] xris: no conflicts. just because...
[04:48:18] Blaksmith: audio is sync'd better with using jack, than with pulse .. :)
[04:48:31] Blaksmith: lol xris
[04:48:41] wagnerrp: that's because pulse makes no guarantees about audio latency
[04:48:54] Blaksmith: yah, and jack uses rtc
[04:49:08] Blaksmith: I totally missed the "jack" capability when I was re-setting up
[04:50:16] Blaksmith: thanks again wagnerrp :)
[04:50:39] ** wagnerrp goes back to trying to figure out cython **

[04:51:41] wagnerrp: a python interpreter written in python?
[04:51:46] wagnerrp: just seems too meta
[04:51:57] xris: no, it's basically a python compiler
[04:52:09] xris: separate interpretation of python. its code is faster
[04:52:13] xris: or allegedly so
[04:52:16] wagnerrp: im trying to access libmagic
[04:52:23] xris: for imagemagic?
[04:52:31] wagnerrp: for 'file' type stuff
[04:52:37] wagnerrp: MIME and the like
[04:52:41] xris: ah
[04:52:58] xris: tonsofpcs: in my case it's just something odd in the scheduler. trials of not using a stable release
[04:53:15] wagnerrp: i'm pissed off at freebsd
[04:53:55] wagnerrp: tried to update qt, and ran into tons of compilation issues where some nested dependency was updated, but libraries using it never recompiled for the new library name
[04:54:27] wagnerrp: so i kept having to manually rebuild stuff because it couldn't figure out libpcre.so.1 is just as good as libpcre.so.0
[04:55:13] wagnerrp: im trying to write something that will scan through the package manifests for any binary files installed, and then make sure all their linked dependencies are available
[04:55:14] xris: I gave up on freebsd years ago when I realized it wasn't linux.  :) though admittedly I was very new to linux at the time.
[04:55:17] wagnerrp: if not, rebuild them
[04:56:02] wagnerrp: i gave up on linux years ago, when freebsd was the first "distro" that handled all my disk controller cards out-of-the-box

[04:58:00] wagnerrp: i still use it as my primary, but i've been spoiled by gentoo's package system
[04:58:11] wagnerrp: it's similar design to freebsd's, but much more advanced

[05:10:37] JoeyJoeJo: Is it wise to use an SSD for recordings?
[05:10:48] wagnerrp: no
[05:11:10] wagnerrp: only if you are intending to use it as temporary scratch space, and will be shuffling those into some large bulk storage
[05:11:59] JoeyJoeJo: What's the reason for that? I thought it would be better since the seek times are better
[05:12:25] clever: video files arent very seek heavy
[05:12:26] wagnerrp: because it's expensive
[05:12:37] wagnerrp: like 20x the cost of traditional magnetic storage
[05:12:51] JoeyJoeJo: What if money wasn't an issue?
[05:13:03] wagnerrp: buy a kaleidoscape
[05:13:16] JoeyJoeJo: What's that?
[05:13:51] wagnerrp: commercial networked video library, in the $10K and up range
[05:14:12] wagnerrp: of course they use magnetic storage too
[05:14:13] wagnerrp: :)
[05:14:30] Blaksmith: hmm, I never did mess with the volume settings, but were't there keys like [] or <> or something for the volume up/down? I remember hitting them by accident in the past.. or does the jack setting not have it?
[05:15:03] clever: Blaksmith: i think it was [], but i'm not sure if jack lets you adjust volume
[05:15:27] Blaksmith: yah, thought it was [] also .. not seeing it pop up now.. oh well :)
[05:15:31] Blaksmith: the volume is ok
[05:16:23] wagnerrp: JoeyJoeJo: basically, there is no sense using flash for bulk storage unless you need shock resistance
[05:16:29] xris: I really like my synology NAS. it'll do iscsi. though I still haven't put my recordings there.  :)
[05:17:16] wagnerrp: SSDs work great for your database, but they're just too small for any meaningful amount of recording space
[05:17:35] wagnerrp: there are many of us in the several TB range
[05:17:52] JoeyJoeJo: xris: Can you put apps on the synology?
[05:18:12] wagnerrp: it's just a little Linux ARM system
[05:18:14] xris: I only use it for nfs/sips, but if you use iscsi, sure. the linux box just sees it as a scsi device
[05:18:32] xris: or do you mean on the NAS itself? yeah, as wagnerrp said it's just a linux box.
[05:18:55] wagnerrp: you can put whatever you want on there, so long as you obey the CPU and memory constraints
[05:18:56] xris: runs mail/web/vpn/crashplan/audio streaming and a bunch of other stuff for me
[05:19:09] JoeyJoeJo: Cool. That'd be neat to run a torrent client on
[05:19:31] xris: there's a 3rd party package for transmission
[05:19:35] xris: works great
[05:19:55] xris: I just wish it would plug into the NAS auth setup so I could open the port on my firewall
[05:20:12] wagnerrp: of course it's a pricy little unit just to run bittorrent
[05:20:41] wagnerrp: you use it because you don't want to spend the time managing an LVM array yourself
[05:20:47] xris: esp the 5 drive version I got
[05:21:09] xris: yeah, I got it to replace my mail server and a few other things, too. trying to simplify my life a bit.

[20:58:38] ViperSBT: Looking at the MySQL log: http://pastebin.com/QJAkrVtH they are right on top of each other...
[21:00:09] neufeld: ViperSBT: let's make sure it's a timing issue. If you put a "sleep 10" into the mythbackend startup script, does everything work? If so, it's a race. If not, it indicates that something about the script environment during bootup is incorrect, but when invoked from the shell it gets what it needs.
[21:01:27] neufeld: If it's a race with mysql, try that thing I posted before. Put this into the script before the backend startup: "while ! mysql mythconverg -e ';' ; do sleep 1 ; done "
[21:04:40] neufeld: ViperSBT: of course, it should be noted that that script fragment assumes that root has the credentials it needs in its my.cnf, otherwise you might just loop forever on permission denied.
