[00:04:55] jpabq_afk is now known as jpabq

[00:16:39] spasysheep: is there any way to set up a mythtv backend on a headless server other than x-forwarding? If not, is it possible to make the x-forwarding a bit more responsive? It's over LAN, and currently more of a point and click adventure game than a menu system
[00:16:41] amessina (amessina!~amessina@2001:470:c1dc:7779:d6be:d9ff:fe8d:7c1e) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:17:04] wagnerrp: use the keyboard instead of the mouse
[00:17:28] wagnerrp: don't use forwarding, and just point mythtv-setup directly at the remote server using DISPLAY
[00:17:41] [R]: i dunno, i use forwarding and it works fine for me
[00:18:02] spasysheep: Keyboard is slower than the mouse because I have to scroll through them rather than jumping to the thing I want.
[00:18:20] wagnerrp: mouse is slow, because the interface was never really designed to be used with a mouse
[00:18:49] spasysheep: And I don't understand what you mean by the second bit.
[00:19:22] wagnerrp: x-forwarding means you used SSH to forward your application from a local port to a remote X11 server
[00:19:33] wagnerrp: skip that step
[00:19:38] wagnerrp: make the application use the remote port directly
[00:19:41] spasysheep: wagnerrp: mouse is slow when doing it locally, but as I have to wait 1–2 seconds every time the screen updates, 1 update when I click on something with the mouse is faster than 4 as I scroll through the options
[00:20:04] wagnerrp: if you have to wait 1–2 seconds every time the screen updates, you're doing something horribly wrong
[00:20:15] wagnerrp: are you sure this is actually over the LAN
[00:20:25] wagnerrp: you haven't managed to push it over the internet somehow?
[00:20:36] wagnerrp: this is not over some lossy wireless?
[00:20:50] wagnerrp: no null modem connection?
[00:21:15] spasysheep: I'd have to have really screwed up the network config for that. It's running through a 100mbit switch, I could probably get it to gigabit if I tried
[00:21:36] wagnerrp: maybe you're trying to use OpenGL with software rendering?
[00:21:58] spasysheep: I'm using xming on windows as the server, it works fine for browsers when I want to test pages under different OSs
[00:22:13] wagnerrp: the real version? or the free version?
[00:22:24] spasysheep: but with mythtv it's like a series of images loading from the internet
[00:22:35] spasysheep: I wasn't aware there was a paid version
[00:22:49] wagnerrp: technically, there isn't
[00:23:03] spasysheep: ??
[00:23:06] wagnerrp: the free free version is an old 6.9.x build
[00:23:15] wagnerrp: people who donate get access to a recent 7.x build
[00:23:28] spasysheep: OIC
[00:23:57] spasysheep: and that has a load of optimisations and maybe some fancier hardware acceleration support or something, presumably
[00:24:18] wagnerrp: honestly, for mythtv-setup, it shouldn't make any difference
[00:24:37] wagnerrp: the only reason i might think it might make a difference is something funky going on with opengl rendering
[00:24:51] spasysheep: well
[00:24:53] wagnerrp: the newer version might handle that better
[00:25:03] spasysheep: is there no way to edit the config through text?
[00:25:08] wagnerrp: in any case, i'm using xming 7.3? on windows without a problem
[00:25:24] wagnerrp: prior to that, i was using Cygwin/X without any problems
[00:26:11] wagnerrp: no, at the current time, there is no terminal application to configure mythtv
[00:26:37] wagnerrp: there is a partially written, and disabled, backend setup application written into the backend's web server
[00:27:18] spasysheep: right.
[00:27:34] spasysheep: The server's only 2m away, I could easily hook a screen up to it
[00:27:36] wagnerrp: it is intended as a replacement for mythtv-setup, but is not yet ready for use
[00:27:43] spasysheep: but then I'd have to install X
[00:28:00] wagnerrp: try "-O ThemePainter=qt"
[00:28:09] wagnerrp: or maybe "-O UIPainter=qt"
[00:31:31] spasysheep: nope
[00:31:39] spasysheep: still a slideshow :(

[00:32:41] wagnerrp: when you configured Xming, did you tell it to listen on the network?
[00:32:55] wagnerrp: i believe that should be the default configuration, you would have to disable it manually
[00:33:20] spasysheep: I ran xlaunch, and told it to run as one window without titlebar
[00:33:39] spasysheep: that's the only configuration options I know of
[00:33:39] wagnerrp: one window? so not integrated with your other windows?

[00:33:52] wagnerrp: all your applications are nested within that window?
[00:34:02] spasysheep: no, when I let it integrate it messes up because of multi-screens
[00:34:10] wagnerrp: no it doesn't
[00:34:24] wagnerrp: i have have three screens and have no problem doing that
[00:34:47] wagnerrp: anyway, right click in the system tray, open the command processor
[00:35:24] spasysheep: either mythtv is fullscreen across all 3 screens and bits get cut off due to size mismatches, or I set mythtv to windowed and it won't act like a proper window so I still can't see it properly
[00:35:33] wagnerrp: type "xhost +<backend's hostname>"
[00:35:46] spasysheep: command processor?
[00:35:57] wagnerrp: you have a big "X" in your system tray, correct?
[00:36:00] spasysheep: yes
[00:36:09] wagnerrp: right click it, command processor
[00:36:30] spasysheep: View Log, About XMing, Exit
[00:36:44] wagnerrp: must be differences with the updated version
[00:37:27] spasysheep: ah well
[00:37:54] spasysheep: does the mythtv user need access to /dev/dvb/?
[00:38:06] wagnerrp: if you have digital tuners, yes
[00:38:38] spasysheep: how do I do that? The only way I've seen it chmoding the dev nodes, but I'm sure that's bad practice
[00:38:59] wagnerrp: usually udev gives permission to some group, like video
[00:39:04] wagnerrp: put mythtv in that group

[00:51:02] spasysheep: The video source setup is confusing me – I'm in the UK and the only applicable looking one in the commercial one. When I was testing the card none of the automatic channel lists could find anything, so I used w_scan to generate a channels.conf Can I use that somehow?
[00:51:29] uglyoldbob (uglyoldbob!~quassel@96.31.212.218) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:51:37] wagnerrp: preferably not
[00:52:04] spasysheep: why not?
[00:52:05] wagnerrp: basically, your video source is just a list of channels
[00:52:20] wagnerrp: independent from your inputs, so you can do one-to-many mapping
[00:52:46] wagnerrp: if you use a channels.conf, it is lacking some information necessary to use EIT data
[00:53:03] spasysheep: OK
[00:55:50] spasysheep: there's a wiki page for a UK radio times grabber for mythtv, but I don't have that option
[00:56:00] spasysheep: is it a plugin I need to install or something?
[00:56:18] wagnerrp: there is an XMLTV script
[00:56:29] wagnerrp: you have to point mythtv at it
[00:56:44] wagnerrp: there is some amount of setup involved, but i've never used xmltv
[01:01:26] spasysheep: there's a guide, but it tells me to select an option that doesn't exist :(

[07:06:46] Swabby-: lol
[07:06:50] wagnerrp: swimmingly?
[07:07:07] Swabby-: so...i assume it's another way of bringing tv input to myth..is that true?
[07:07:12] Swabby-: instead of a tv card
[07:07:24] wagnerrp: it effectively is nothing more than a tv card
[07:07:28] [R]: well its tcp instead of pci
[07:07:34] [R]: or udp or wahtever the hell it uses
[07:07:38] Swabby-: lol
[07:07:38] wagnerrp: udp
[07:07:50] Swabby-: due to it being over udp (network) does it slow things down?

[07:08:38] Swabby-: wagnerrp: i respect my network ;)
[07:08:39] Swabby-: lol
[07:08:45] wagnerrp: the HDHR operates independently of any cable box
[07:09:04] wagnerrp: respect it, by giving it nice gigabit switches?
[07:09:13] Swabby-: looking at the HDHR..it looks like you feed the coax right into it..
[07:09:19] wagnerrp: that is correct
[07:09:20] Swabby-: so basically whatever is available ota that's all you get
[07:09:30] wagnerrp: whatever is unencrypted, yes
[07:09:52] Swabby-: damn cable companies make it so hard
[07:10:34] Swabby-: Do they have pci tv cards now that support CableCards?

[07:11:53] Swabby-: are there devices that support cablecard?
[07:12:13] wagnerrp: the HDHomeRun Prime operates much like a standard HDHR, but supports cablecard
[07:12:29] wagnerrp: or the DCR-2650 is an HDHRP, with one less tuner, and connected over USB
[07:12:47] wagnerrp: the InfiniTV has four tuners, and connects over PCIe
[07:13:11] wagnerrp: they support encryption, but as far as mythtv is concerned, they do not support copy protection
[07:14:13] Swabby-: my stupid cable company has made it to where you have to have a box now to get anything off the coax
[07:14:19] Swabby-: they went all digital
[07:14:42] Swabby-: so i figure i'll have to either use some kind of IR with my set-top box or get a cablecard
[07:14:56] wagnerrp: cablecard likely will not be an option
[07:15:39] wagnerrp: being open source, mythtv can do conditional access, but it cannot do copy protection
[07:15:55] wagnerrp: meaning any show flagged for copy protection will not be accessible by mythtv through a cablecard tuner
[07:16:11] Swabby-: ah...i didn't realize that wagnerrp..thats a good call
[07:16:29] wagnerrp: with some cable companies, that's perfectly fine, as most to all the stuff is not flagged (marked "copy freely")
[07:16:48] wagnerrp: presumably, insight is going to behave like their parent, time warner
[07:16:52] Swabby-: do i have a shot at getting ANY channels based on my cable company setup?
[07:16:56] wagnerrp: and flag everything as copy protected just because they can
[07:17:09] Swabby-: yeah...insight hasn't quite finished the whole
[07:17:11] Swabby-: merge thing
[07:17:28] wagnerrp: if you have a cable box, there are directions that can be found online to put it into diagnostic mode
[07:17:38] wagnerrp: at which point you can often see the CCI codes
[07:18:02] Swabby-: my big issue right now is our DVR is filling up, i can't get the stuff off of it, -and- sometimes it doesn't record stuff
[07:18:11] wagnerrp: alternatively, if you know anyone with a TiVo unit, copy protected shows cannot be pulled off the unit to a PC
[07:18:35] Swabby-: If you can see the CCI codes i assume those can be programmed into the myth and potentially let it "record" freely?
[07:18:54] wagnerrp: no, the "CCI code" is the copy protection flag
[07:18:57] Swabby-: ah
[07:19:02] wagnerrp: blank, copy freely, copy once, copy never
[07:19:06] Swabby-: so..that would give me an idea if they're allowing it
[07:19:09] wagnerrp: correct
[07:19:11] Swabby-: before i make the investment
[07:20:38] Swabby-: I was looking at the DCR-2650..pretty sweet deals on it right now
