[00:56:28] ron__: can myth play sbs 3d mkvs?
[00:56:41] [R]: can ffmpeg?
[00:57:34] ron__: I don't know. it depends if myth can change the output over HDMI to 1080p@24Hz I think
[00:57:50] skd5aner: ron__: it's not a mythtv question...
[00:58:05] skd5aner: ron__: if your video card, and the driver can do that, then that's what mythtv will use
[00:58:17] ron__: OK
[00:59:11] skd5aner: if you are using nvidia, you can specify the modeline, resolution, etc... or you can use xrandr to actuallly dynamically leverage the video's framerate/resolution...
[00:59:13] ron__: I thought it was a myth question as I don't know how mythaffects the oputput or whether it's completely dependant on X
[00:59:36] skd5aner: pretty much dependant on your xorg.conf, yes
[00:59:38] ron__: I have an nvidia ION box
[00:59:44] sl1ce (sl1ce!~johnathan@c-66-31-34-71.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[01:00:06] skd5aner: the only way it's not is if you want ot leverge xrandr, then you can tell mythtv to be use different resolutions for gui vs video
[01:00:35] skd5aner: but still, it'll rely on your X config
[01:00:41] skd5aner: and video card capabilities
[01:01:10] sl1ce (sl1ce!~johnathan@c-66-31-34-71.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[01:02:35] ron__: most of my recordings are either 1080i@25Hz or SD PAL so with the different res for UI Vs video and the correct xorg.conf it'll switch modes automatically?
[01:03:51] ron__: if that's the case I'll get the 3d TV :)
[01:07:25] skd5aner: Don't ask me about the 3D stuff specifically – no idea
[01:11:27] ron__: that's not the issue, it's whether myth can output a frame compatible stream over HDMI
[01:12:26] ron__: but it sounds like it can so long as I get everything setup correctly
[01:14:24] skd5aner: There were some specific 3D commits that went in to 0.24 I believe
[01:14:29] skd5aner: nothing that I know of since then
[01:14:52] skd5aner: I would imagine that if it didn't work, there'd be lots of noise about it on the mailing list
[01:16:48] ron__: I'm running 0.25 now and my current TV is 720p but provides garbage EDID info
[01:16:57] ron__: I think it's worth a punt
[01:18:40] jpabq: skd5aner: did you try disabling VDPAU for decoding? VDPAU is "rendering" okay, but does not handle damage near as well as the software decoder.
[01:18:53] skd5aner: Yes... several weeks ago
[01:19:16] skd5aner: it did work without vdpau, but I can tell a difference with picture quality and particularly motion
[01:20:02] skd5aner: VDPAU is crisper, probably because it's scaler is better, and seems to do better with deinterlacing and motion in general
[01:20:34] skd5aner: also, my machine can sometimes struggle with high-bitrate/high compression formats... and will stutter with standard software decoding
[01:21:04] jpabq: Did you try using VDPAU *just* for rendering?
[01:21:28] skd5aner: I think I just used the standard profile, let me go fiddle
[01:21:38] jpabq: Yeah, software decoder requires a decent cpu.
[01:24:31] jpabq: skd5aner: also, what version of VDPAU are you running? I've got 304, but I see that 310 is available from nVidia. I wonder if 310 would offer any improvements...
[01:26:23] skd5aner: jpabq: ok, I've set decoder to standard and video render to vdpau
[01:26:51] skd5aner: jpabq: I know how to chekc the nvidia driver version, but how do I easily check the version of libvdpau I'm leveraging?
[01:28:09] skd5aner: jpabq: I'm not getting the glitchy playback this way
[01:29:43] darkstarbyte (darkstarbyte!~branden@70.36.67.211) has quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)

[01:30:05] ron__: thanks for your help :)
[01:31:32] skd5aner: jpabq: I manually install nvidia's binary drivers, and run 304.60, but I think I use ubuntu's libvdapu which says it's v0.4.1 – https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvdpau/0.4.1-6ubuntu1
[01:31:42] skd5aner: ron__: cool, have fun!

[01:33:23] skd5aner: jpabq: I thought they decoupled it from the binary video drivers a few years ago
[01:33:41] jpabq: skd5aner: I am a fedora user. Fedora 16 currently installs 304.60–1.fc17.2

[01:37:07] jpabq: On my frontend, libvdpau is 0.5–1.fc16 and kmod-nvidia is 304.60–1.fc16.2
[01:39:51] skd5aner: jpabq: I think .5 just came out in Sept
[01:40:41] skd5aner: so it didn't make it into ubuntu's dev cycle for their Oct release
[01:41:10] jpabq: My CPU is powerful enough, that I can generally do software decode. But, jumping around causes frame-flashing, which is annoying.
[01:41:54] skd5aner: I'm so frustrated with 0.26 as this point – first time I've ever regretted upgrading mythtv – since the ~0.12 days
[01:42:43] jpabq: I am just wondering if it is the VDPAU glue that is causing the problem, or if it is ffmpeg, or what...
[01:42:46] skd5aner: stil love myth, just difficult to love at the moment
[01:43:05] skd5aner: jpabq: well, the same version of vdpau and nvidia drivers does not have this problem with 0.25
[01:43:29] skd5aner: jpabq: unfortunately, I've got to run
[01:43:37] jpabq: Okay. Later.
[01:43:47] skd5aner: got a long list of items I've got to get done around the house before tomorrow :/
[01:43:54] skd5aner: might check in later
[01:44:09] jpabq: skd5aner: it is unfortunate that I don't have the problem the way you do. Makes it hard for me to test ideas.
[01:44:49] skd5aner: Feel free to come over for Thanksgiving tomorrow – I'll fill you up with tons of food and you can spend all afternoon fiddling around with my set-up ;D
[01:45:01] jpabq: skd5aner: I guess I could try running your version of ubuntu in a VM
[01:45:26] jpabq: Heh. I doubt you live anywhere near albuquerque.
[01:45:43] ragingmind: my upgrade to 0.26 helped me track down why I couldn't launch huludesktop from my main menu or mplayer for videos :) it works with the QT painter, but if I set auto or opengl it gets weird (frontend hangs)
[01:45:48] ragingmind: so, yay?
[01:45:49] skd5aner: nah – heh, midwest
[01:46:25] jpabq: Have a good thanksgiving (Without me)

[23:09:28] BabaBooey: so here's a hypothetical... how well would mythtv work as an instant replay machine? no channel guide, just an input from a router, pause, rewind, play back slo-mo, back to live, and subclip.
[23:10:19] Demon_Fox: It is stable and unmaintained.
[23:10:49] Demon_Fox: I do see firmware, but that might already be in the kernel

[23:31:33] Demon_Fox: I just thought about this
[23:32:05] Demon_Fox: At my old school they had the librarian recording shows off the tv all the time and burning it to disk for the teachers, isn't that against the law?
[23:32:15] BabaBooey: for educational purposes, generally no
[23:32:29] Demon_Fox: Usually pbs
[23:32:30] BabaBooey: my first job in television was cutting the commercials out of those kinds of programs on VHS, hehe
[23:32:35] Demon_Fox: and the history channel
[23:32:43] Demon_Fox: lol

[23:35:23] Demon_Fox: Does fedora has mythtv going alright?
[23:35:36] Demon_Fox: I am thinking of switching my main computers over to it, from Slackware.
[23:36:25] [R]: you can run myth in any dist
[23:36:40] BabaBooey: anyone got any insights on my instant replay idea?
[23:36:41] Demon_Fox: Slackware does not have it set up quite right.
[23:36:56] [R]: yuou set it up however you want to set it up
[23:37:00] Demon_Fox: Everything perl is broken in the repo
[23:37:08] Demon_Fox: cpan also
[23:37:11] [R]: well slackware being a piee of crap and having broken perl
[23:37:13] [R]: isnt' really myth's fault
[23:37:22] Demon_Fox: I know
[23:37:30] [R]: you can run myth in any sane dist
[23:37:32] [R]: hows that?
[23:37:35] Demon_Fox: that is why I am asking does anyone have it working alright with fedora
[23:37:56] [R]: slackware stopped being relevent ages ago
[23:38:00] Demon_Fox: Slackware makes great servers [R]
[23:38:02] [R]: therefore it doesnt fall under the "sane dist" category
[23:38:07] [R]: i'm sure you think it does
[23:38:52] [R]: i prefer tmy dists to be run by someone other then a crazy man who thinks its funny to version them like 13.37
[23:38:54] Demon_Fox: [R], sorry, I just did not know everyone disliked, everywhere I go they hate it.
[23:39:14] [R]: rofl
[23:39:16] Demon_Fox: That was a l33t thing

[23:39:33] Demon_Fox: It was a joke to explain it self.
[23:40:00] Demon_Fox: I wish firefox would have done it, but maybe they did.
[23:40:00] [R]: distrowatch lists it right above freebsd
[23:40:05] [R]: that shows you how relevant it is...
[23:40:33] Demon_Fox: freebsd's kernel is almost the exact same thing as Apples kernel.
[23:40:49] [R]: if by almost the exact same
[23:40:51] [R]: you mean nothing like it
[23:40:58] [R]: then sure
[23:41:16] Demon_Fox: They added and removed a couple of things.
[23:41:19] [R]: yeah
[23:41:20] [R]: a couple things
[23:41:22] [R]: like mach
[23:41:24] [R]: just a minor detail

[23:42:12] Demon_Fox: NOt you
[23:42:15] Demon_Fox: me.
[23:42:32] Demon_Fox: Sounds like a break up line, that means the opposite.
[23:42:52] BabaBooey: so, maybe y''all can offer some insight... i'm trying to build a prototype instant replay machine for live television production and I think mythtv's pause-rewind-live capabilities would be the perfect brains...
[23:43:46] Demon_Fox: Your making a commercial product from the Mythtv code?
[23:44:07] BabaBooey: as of right now, no.
[23:44:30] BabaBooey: this is for a non-profit entity, hence why i'm trying to keep the cost as far down as possible.
[23:44:51] Demon_Fox: Do you need any help?
[23:45:47] Demon_Fox: I don't have a huge macro collection right at the moment, but if your using C then I have a couple that can be used.
[23:46:21] BabaBooey: well, before I go install a distro and try it out, I want to know if this is worth pursuing... I'm thinking if I can strip down the components (the guide, record scheduler, etc) and just use the capability of pause/rewind/jump to live
[23:46:42] [R] ([R]!~rbox@unaffiliated/rbox) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[23:47:01] Demon_Fox: Sounds like xbmc
[23:47:11] Demon_Fox: They use myth for tv stuff.
[23:47:19] Demon_Fox: It is minimalistic and everything.
[23:47:31] Demon_Fox: maybe it is xmbc
[23:48:06] Demon_Fox: It would like me to bounce more ideas we need to take it to an unused channel, or private chat.
[23:48:25] BabaBooey: at its core, the machine pulls in a line signal and spits it right back out, with the ability to pause the live input and play it back
