[00:50:35] rumblebumble: I am using mythbuntu 12.04, with lirc 0.90 and a mce ir receiver. I upgraded for 11.10. LIRC is non-responsive, for example if I send a irsend command it just hangs. I know this is not the ideal location to discuss lirc issues, I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue when upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04
[00:51:37] rumblebumble: It worked great before the distro upgrade

[01:38:49] Swabby: Quick Q. If I am using a cablebox from the cable company, do i still need a TV card?
[01:39:20] [R]: you need somethign to capture with
[01:39:50] [R]: wether it be over coax (awful), composite (pretty bad), svideo (decent), or component (best)
[01:39:52] Swabby: R: Folks using a cablebox, do they usually use a video card?
[01:40:09] [R]: video card?
[01:40:49] Swabby: So..like could i take the input from my Cable Box (HDMI) bring the input into the PC and the output it back to the TV via HDMI? and use some type of IR to change the channels?
[01:40:55] Swabby: or am i completely out of sync
[01:41:09] [R]: you can't captuer hdmi from a cable box
[01:41:42] [R]: hence why it wasn't in my list of things you can capture with
[01:41:49] Swabby: sorry :)
[01:41:53] Swabby: I'm wanting to use my cable box so i can get like HBO, Showtime, etc....
[01:42:10] Swabby: so.. i could capture from component as you mentioned right?
[01:42:18] [R]: yes
[01:42:21] [R]: for that you need an hdpvr
[01:42:49] Swabby: or..if i wanted to just try this out..i could use whatever my existing tv card accepts...and just bring it in that way right?
[01:42:58] [R]: yes
[01:42:59] Swabby: then my "output" would go to the TV using the video card...
[01:43:05] [R]: but it's going to make you cry, because it'll look like crap
[01:43:08] [R]: yes
[01:43:23] Swabby: then i'll go out and buy some good stuff from Newegg ;)
[01:43:43] Swabby: okay...i got one more question..please don't hit me with the newbie stick. :)
[01:43:49] Swabby: i read the wiki..it talks about front end/backend..
[01:44:36] Swabby: do some folks buy a tower like system, run this like in a bedroom for the "backend" and then use something smaller for the front end that's "dumb" terminal?
[01:44:47] [R]: thats one way to do it
[01:44:54] [R]: or you can just have 1 computer that runs both
[01:44:58] [R]: i stick my backend in the closet
[01:45:02] Swabby: got it...
[01:45:18] Swabby: what's the biggest difference between the front end / back end system?
[01:45:21] Swabby: just less storage /processing power?
[01:46:15] Swabby: Do you care to tell me whats running your backend? (CPU, space, video)?
[01:46:15] [R]: the frontend needs to be able to either have enough power to play back the content you are watching and/or have accelerated graphics output
[01:46:22] Swabby: got it...understood
[01:46:25] [R]: the backend doesnt need much
[01:46:32] [R]: i have no clue what my backend is
[01:46:32] [R]: haha
[01:46:33] [R]: lemme see
[01:46:56] Swabby: R: Do you use a cable box or go straight into the cable feed?
[01:46:56] [R]: 2gb of ram, amd athlon ii x2 250
[01:47:02] [R]: i use directv
[01:47:05] [R]: so i use their receiver
[01:47:10] [R]: and use the hdpvr to capture the component
[01:47:20] Swabby: got it..i'm sure it makes it alot easier :)
[01:47:27] [R]: no
[01:47:29] [R]: it makes it worse
[01:47:38] [R]: but then you get all the channels you pay for
[01:47:45] Swabby: which is great..
[01:47:50] Swabby: and saves on space

[01:48:40] Swabby: Will it run on a P4 1.6 as long as the video is not too heavy or do you recommend i just go out and spec something out and build it?
[01:49:01] [R]: a 1.6 p4 can't handle hd
[01:49:24] [R]: if you get an nvidia card that does vdpau
[01:49:26] Swabby: really need like a i3, i5 something like that then
[01:49:34] [R]: then it'll do accelerated playback, and you dont really ahve to worry about the cpu
[01:49:40] [R]: but then you are limited to what vdpau supports
[01:49:40] Swabby: nice...
[01:50:01] Swabby: i wish there was a site out there that listed people's specs... i don't want to do overkill but at the same time i want it to be decent.
[01:50:13] [R]: theres a wiki page
[01:50:27] Swabby: my wife gets so mad at the DVR because we miss recordings, and we can't get stuff off of it recorded..i got a whole season of Fresh Beats my daughter loves that we can't get off of there :)
[01:50:30] [R]: also people post specs on the mailinglist all the time
[01:51:12] Swabby: Thanks for your help R.. i think i'm ready to go rock and roll :)

[23:06:16] tobi-wan: hi! i'm using mythtv (0.25 from mythbuntu 12.04) since quite a while and everything works like a charm – except one issue: sometimes, when i schedule a recording, it will fail to record it – when i schedule it, it is marked green in the "scheduled recordings" screen – everything OK. later, when i notice it does not record, when checking that screen again, the icon is yellow and says something to the effect of "not recording, because there is no sh
[23:06:16] tobi-wan: ow" (sorry, i have the german version installed and therefore cannot provide you with the exact error message) – i was not able to find any "suspicious" log messages in the frontend/backend log (except maybe Reschedule requested for id -1.), but i might have overlooked something. this behavior is annoying, because it happens quite often (1 out of 5 times, i would guess)
[23:07:30] tobi-wan: IneedA: i *think* i had the same issue – does connecting to the backend work if you restart it manually after the box boots?
[23:08:24] Chicago: tobi-wan, when you manually change channels while watching LiveTV do you sometimes fail to tune in a channel and get kicked back to the main menu?

[23:52:15] dumbnewbie: do everything to it, that is
