[03:13:25] somethinginteres: Something is going wrong with my recording rules. Anything I set to "record daily" it always says "Find Daily -1 previously recorded". That of course is not true. It's just that the show recorded the day -before- and so it won't record it today. That's not meant to happen. Any help would be great. Thanks.
[03:18:39] wagnerrp: sounds like trouble with duplicate matching
[03:19:31] somethinginteres: wagnerrp: OK. Anything I can do or?
[03:19:54] wagnerrp: look at the duplicate matching mechanism, perhaps turn it off for that rule entirely
[03:21:04] somethinginteres: wagnerrp: sorry, how would I go about looking at that? Somewhere in settings?
[03:21:21] wagnerrp: should be options when creating a recording rule
[03:21:59] somethinginteres: wagnerrp: OK. Will look now.
[03:24:29] somethinginteres: wagnerrp: OK it's got match dupes using subtitle and description and "look for dupes in current and previous recordings"

[03:25:38] somethinginteres: wagnerrp: the description for the show looks generic so I think yes, it'd be the same daily.

[03:43:33] wagnerrp: what are you looking for, specifically
[03:44:23] lwizardl: wagnerrp, well like a year ago or so iamlindoro and I was talking about my issue with comcast. he said I have a grounding issue in the house from my video recording that i posted.
[03:44:40] wagnerrp: also known as a "ground loop"
[03:45:16] lwizardl: I was going to ask him for some information on fixing it. I have had about 10 electricians here and none have found any issues. but it only effects the comcast signal
[03:46:29] wagnerrp: how are you capturing the content?
[03:47:00] lwizardl: RCA cables going from the Comcast box(es) into my dvr
[03:47:25] somethinginteres: wagnerrp: this show is having the same problem. Different description daily. Can't reach that bottom option via keyboard: http://imgur.com/9KzzT
[03:47:36] wagnerrp: the issue is the shield is not properly grounded against your home
[03:48:03] wagnerrp: so you are inducing a signal across the shield, causing disruption in the signal line
[03:48:23] wagnerrp: make sure all your cables are properly crimped

[03:50:41] wagnerrp: same wall socket
[03:50:45] lwizardl: ertyu-m, yes
[03:51:38] ertyu-m: the same duplex plug on a wall maybe different circuits sometimes
[03:52:44] lwizardl: k
[03:56:21] ertyu-m: I've seen cable companies fail to filter their power off the line before delivering it or perhaps they do it on purpose
[03:56:49] ertyu-m: my set top box seems to have an ability to retain settings even when unplugged, if it remains plugged into cable
[03:59:29] ertyu-m: or maybe thats just a software trigger, if it loses cable signal it dumps what it remembers
[03:59:49] lwizardl: ertyu-m, All I know is I have been dealing with this issue since 2009. I have paid multiple companies to come out and fix it, I have swapped out about 15 cable boxes from Comcast (about 5 different styles I have had in my room). and same issue
[04:00:48] ertyu-m: have you tried disconnecting everything but the video cable?
[04:01:07] ertyu-m: and tried to connect it so the shield is not connected, but the signal pin is?
[04:01:09] pgf_away is now known as pgf
[04:01:13] lwizardl: I have completely unhooked everything and tried new cables and new devices
[04:01:32] ertyu-m: I mean recording without audio connected
[04:01:51] lwizardl: ertyu-m, if I don't use a terminated cable (just bare copper wire) the issue (hum, bars, etc) are gone
[04:01:59] lwizardl: no
[04:02:43] ertyu-m: you could just do that as a work around then :)
[04:03:30] ertyu-m: you can try getting some foil tape, connecting the shield of the cable to the pci card and the case
[04:03:41] ertyu-m: I know I've seen that done to get FCC testing to pass :(
[04:03:45] lwizardl: I even had new wall sockets installed in the room with GFCI installed to see the status of the grounding
[04:06:03] ertyu-m: or just anything conductive to test

[04:28:44] lwizardl: when pluging the cable from the wall straight into the cable box i have a small faint hum still. but if I plug the cable from the wall into my surge protector, and then plug a cable from the surge protector and then into the cable box the hum and bars are fully gone.just turned the surround sound up high and not hearing it
[04:30:13] ertyu-m: this is the signal cable?
[04:30:18] lwizardl: yes

[04:31:02] uglyoldbob (uglyoldbob!~quassel@96.31.220.46) has joined #mythtv-users
[04:31:13] ertyu-m: that makes some sense, it is likely to be on a different ground plane
[04:31:27] ertyu-m: I believe it should pass through a ground box on the way into your house
[04:31:43] ertyu-m: +though?to correct that
[04:32:06] ertyu-m: does it just enter your house then go to a splitter or something?
[04:32:17] lwizardl: but this would be the first time in like 3 years that I have a good signal
[04:33:09] uglyoldbob: I have a pchdtv card setup and I am trying to use the analog capture. Audio works when I use the analog catv input, but I don't get the correct audio when trying to use composite or s-video inputs. How should I configure the card to get the right sound input for composite and s-video?
[04:33:11] lwizardl: ertyu-m, the line enters a splitter block from comcast, and then hooked to that splitter is a ground wire going into the houses ground
[04:33:44] ertyu-m: has that splitter ever been changed while you were diagnosing this?
[04:34:44] lwizardl: yes about 4 times
[04:34:52] lwizardl: once by me and others by comcast
[04:35:42] ertyu-m: and the ground wire is effectively connected?
[04:36:09] lwizardl: according to comcast and the electricians I have hired. Yes
[04:37:02] sraue (sraue!~stephan@xbmc/staff/sraue) has joined #mythtv-users
[04:37:04] lwizardl: thought about running a new ground rod in the yard and redoing all the grounding to that but figured it would just add a new loop and decided against it
[04:37:21] ertyu-m: getting beyond my knowledge
[04:37:32] ertyu-m: thinking about what the surge protector is doing?.
[04:37:59] ertyu-m: its likely going to couple the shield ground of the cable to the power ground, but likely indirectly
[04:38:14] ertyu-m: as its going to have some filtering circuitry to clamp a surge strike
[04:38:27] lwizardl: yeah
[04:38:45] ertyu-m: either of those two behaviours may be fixing the signal
[04:38:47] lwizardl: this was the original video I recorded (first weeks in the house) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnbWhVO-Los
[04:39:54] lwizardl: it was only that bad for like 6 months of random changes of boxes from comcast
[04:40:22] lwizardl: then they came out replaced the tap on the pole (at the street) and it cleaned up a bit
[04:40:47] ertyu-m: the surge bar may also be effectively decoupling the shield from input to output
[04:40:51] wagnerrp: oh yeah, that's definitely a ground loop
[04:43:22] ertyu-m: you can try moving that surge bar connection around and seeing if there are changes
[04:43:33] ertyu-m: like put it right on the input to your house or after the splitter
[04:44:02] pgf is now known as pgf_away
[04:44:05] lwizardl: yeah I never tried that. I know that it wasn't just one tv that had the issue
[04:44:32] ertyu-m: you're seeing this on all your cable boxes?
[04:45:50] lwizardl: yeah it "was" doing similar effects on all the boxes in the house. but after swapping out boxes the others stopped. only one was still doing anything close to that
[04:46:18] lwizardl: most of the time it was just a hum bar and a buzzing
[04:46:29] ertyu-m: then I'd concentrate on the shared components?from where it enters to the house to the splitter
[04:46:40] lwizardl: after the tap on the pole was replaced nothing like the video has ever happened again
[04:46:50] ertyu-m: have you tried disconnecting the ground wire from the splitter to see what happens?
[04:47:28] lwizardl: I have not but they said that they tried that and nothing changed (if I remember correctly)
[04:49:05] ertyu-m: is the ground wire long from the spliter?
[04:49:13] lwizardl: yeah
[04:49:43] lwizardl: I would say about 6ft ish
[04:49:54] ertyu-m: oh, that's not too long
[05:00:09] ertyu-m: is the noise present on analog and digital channels?
[05:01:07] lwizardl: yes it was
[05:01:34] lwizardl: but the cable box was only connected to the tv/surround sound via RCA cables and not hdmi/rgb

[14:05:05] sphery: somethinginteres: so, if you set up the rule using your 7:02 episode, and tomorrow's episode is 7:01, then that 7:01 will count as "covered by today's episode"
[14:05:52] sphery: somethinginteres: meaning a) ideally you'd get good guide data and use a real rule (like "any time on any channel") or b) if you have to use the find daily rules, you should probably go into the recording rule editor and change the find time to something a bit before the episode you want

[14:09:58] sphery: assuming useful guide data, that is--but MythTV without useful guide data is just a glorified VCR that requires manual programming every day

[16:29:51] jst_: Ohh, looks like "/" switches groups in the guide. Not sure how to get to the next channel in that group though.

[18:59:21] Nede82: hi chat, sorry for my broken english! Mythtv 0.26 and streaming over http in firefox work. For view this stream in vlc?
[19:01:55] sphery: Nede82: I don't know much about Flash, but I'd suggest if you don't need the browser (i.e. you're not accessing the video from across the Internet), you just play back the actual file
[19:03:01] sphery: so use something like NFS/CIFS to mount the recording files on the system with VLC (which, presumably, does not have mythfrontend installed) and play the correct file... Using mythlink.pl, you can even get somewhat usable link file names that make it easier to find what to watch
[19:03:37] Nede82: sphery, Unfortunately, I'm trying to do stream via the internet and the actual file is too large ....
[19:03:48] sphery: or you may be able to use VLC to stream the video file from the mythbackend computer with the recording to the computer (without mythfrontend) that has VLC
[19:04:05] wagnerrp: then the only mechanism available currently is the flash viewer in mythweb
[19:04:08] sphery: so why do you want to use VLC instead of Firefox?
[19:04:20] wagnerrp: unless you want to write a frontend to the new HLS server
[19:05:15] sphery: you could just root around to find the URI that's being used to trigger the flash transcode and streaming and use that with VLC (but it's definitely not a supported solution--then again, the Flash proof of concept really isn't either)
[19:06:48] Nede82: sphery, wagnerrp thank you for your time!!! I try strem with vlc "server".......
[19:07:36] wagnerrp: that will require you to do everything manually
[19:07:50] wagnerrp: since VLC does not offer any sort of menuing system to manage what it streams
[19:08:12] wagnerrp: at that point, you're just as well off using the HLS server integrated into mythbackend

[19:09:45] sphery: got really busy with work in the last few months, so haven't done anything with mythtv :(
[19:09:49] Nede82: wagnerrp, hls but the server has some sort of buffer? Internet in the stream freezes every 12 seconds clear ....
[19:09:58] wagnerrp: i actually rigged up some changes to make the video library sort-of work
[19:10:25] sphery: I'd love to get a nice proxy in place and start ripping out parts of mythweb...  :)
[19:10:33] wagnerrp: but ran into a problem where the streaming code the mythmusic integration uses stalls out at 32MB

[19:19:45] sphery: to maintain same quality, you'd need at least 1/2 the bandwidth as MPEG-2
[19:19:49] sphery: (likely more)
[19:19:54] N0BOX: sphery: yeah, except the the commercial flagging program cuts out half or more of the SD broadcasts, and sometimes large chunks of the hd broadcasts
[19:20:01] wagnerrp: no, the original spec was for half the bandwidth
[19:20:07] wagnerrp: and they've improved it over the years
[19:20:29] sphery: N0BOX: that's why you use the editor to set cuts rather than blindly accepting the detected commercial markers as cuts
[19:20:35] N0BOX: well, I also convert hd1080to hd720
[19:20:49] wagnerrp: but you shouldn't expect anything smaller than a third the size of the original, assuming the broadcast encoder was competant
[19:20:51] N0BOX: so that explains a lot of the space savings

[19:22:19] wagnerrp: eh?

[19:24:11] wagnerrp: basically, you tie two antenna together, and filter one to only provide the channels you want
[19:24:13] sphery: N0BOX: yeah, so it seems to me that buying another 2TB HDD for $79.99 or a 3TB for $129.99 would be cheaper than the electricity you're using to constantly transcode things only to delete them later

[19:30:16] sphery: yep, still on
[19:30:24] sphery: oh, wait, that's a 1.5
[19:30:30] sphery: but there was a 2TB
[19:31:10] sphery: it was the first I've seen at that price since the floods... just helped a friend find a 2TB for $89.99 about 3 days before this sale
[19:33:21] stuartm: at that price it would be worth me buying one and having it shipped ;)
[19:35:13] wagnerrp: import taxes?
[19:35:25] stuartm: cheapest I can find right now is $121
[19:37:15] sphery: seems it's no longer on sale
[19:37:40] sphery: at least going through my browser history, I no longer see it
[19:38:02] sphery: (all the ones I've looked at are now more than that... but there are some $89.99 ones, still)
[19:39:40] sphery: then again, this 3TB at $119.99 is the same cost/gb as 2TB@$79.99 ($0.04/GB) – http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148844
[19:39:43] stuartm: I could use another with Christmas coming
[19:40:06] sphery: and may be more efficient when you factor in shipping and VAT
[19:40:57] stuartm: cheapest 3TB here is $160+
[19:41:22] sphery: yeah, the $120 is a nice deal here, too
[19:41:53] sphery: until this one, all the 3TBs I'd seen had a price premium/GB compared to 2TB
[19:42:19] neufeld: Note that you can see product price histories at camelegg: http://camelegg.com/product/N82E16822148725?locale=US
[19:45:11] stuartm: that $160 (£100) one is in a sale too, £23 off
[19:49:49] wagnerrp: camelegg? as opposed to newegg?
[19:50:59] stuartm: sounds like camelcamelcamel
[19:51:18] stuartm: yeah, same people
[19:51:40] neufeld: camelegg scrapes the newegg price data and presents it. Price histories, dates of high/low, that sort of things. I find it sometimes helpful.
[19:52:36] stuartm: if it's like ccc then you can also create price alerts, when something you want drops below a threshold you've set they send you an email
[19:53:06] stuartm: I've used it a couple of times to pick up bargins on stuff (Amazon)
[19:57:15] skd5aner: wow, never heard of it
[19:57:17] skd5aner: nice
[19:58:50] wagnerrp: its a shame anandtech stopped running their RTPE

[20:42:34] N0BOX: I would love to sink a bunch of money into hard drives and all, but I've already blown all the money I can afford to on my computer for a while
[20:42:49] N0BOX: disability checks aren't as big as actual paychecks :(((

[20:43:40] N0BOX: I'm also a computer snob, so those cheap 5400/5900rpm drives simply aren't an option ;)
[20:44:28] N0BOX: I bought a bunch of cheap seagate barracuda drives to build my previous system (the one this one is upgraded from), and I'm paying the price for it over the past few months
[20:44:47] N0BOX: so far two of the drives have failed two months apart from each other
[20:45:21] N0BOX: Now I'm only going to buy the western digital caviar black or RE4 drives
[20:45:35] N0BOX: they have a 5 year warranty, rather than seagate's 1 year warranty
[20:46:46] N0BOX: luckily, I wasted (or did I?) a bunch of money building a RAID10 array when I got those barracuda
[20:46:49] N0BOX: s
[20:47:26] N0BOX: now my array is half seagate, half wd re4
