[00:45:25] wagnerrp: ewindisch: ive been running a freebsd master backend, with an HDHomeRun, for several years.... works just fine
[00:45:32] ewindisch: wagnerrp: awesome.
[00:45:53] wagnerrp: also have a buildbot running on the continuous integration system... http://code.mythtv.org/buildbot/builders/master-freebsd-64bit
[00:46:40] wagnerrp: can't help you with xbmc though, that's a 3rd party project
[00:46:45] ewindisch: yep, I realize.
[00:47:13] wagnerrp: if you need, i can give you a pkg_info dump
[00:47:28] ewindisch: wagnerrp: nice. Yeah, the mythtv docs nor the freebsd/myth docs seem to really give much insight into how well the hdhomerun works there. They're just clear that v4l stuff (which is most of it) doesn't.
[00:47:39] ewindisch: so I'm really happy to hear it works.
[00:48:34] ewindisch: should I use the official mythtv port or pull the upstream tarball?
[00:48:48] ewindisch: (or git repo)
[00:48:59] wagnerrp: there is no official mythtv port
[00:49:13] ewindisch: there is a port in freebsd-ports
[00:49:25] wagnerrp: there is a port, i think maintained by a 'decke', never used it
[00:49:42] ewindisch: good to know :)
[00:49:55] wagnerrp: as for the tarball, don't use that either
[00:50:10] wagnerrp: if you're going to be building from source, you may as well use up-to-date source from the git repository
[00:50:21] wagnerrp: the tarballs are only there for packagers who require them
[00:50:43] ewindisch: no stable release cycle?
[00:51:08] wagnerrp: 0.26 is the stable version
[00:51:14] wagnerrp: 0.26.0 is the latest stable release
[00:51:29] ewindisch: but you suggest just running trunk. :)
[00:51:39] wagnerrp: no, i suggest you run off the repository
[00:51:51] wagnerrp: specifically, the fixes branch of the 0.26 version
[00:52:07] ewindisch: gotcha.
[00:52:50] wagnerrp: 0.26.0, and future 0.26.1+, are just snapshots at some point in that fixes/0.26 branch
[00:52:55] ewindisch: what about libhdhomerun? Download it from siliciondust and build?
[00:53:09] wagnerrp: there is a modified version built into the source
[00:53:27] wagnerrp: the device is supported with no external dependencies, beyond network access
[00:53:31] ewindisch: that makes things easy
[00:53:41] justdave (justdave!~dave@unaffiliated/justdave) has quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[00:53:50] wagnerrp: are you planning on using this in a jail?
[00:55:14] ewindisch: hadn't thought about it, to be honest. Probably should
[00:55:51] wagnerrp: up to you. it you're going to be running a number of things on this box, it makes dependency issues easier to deal with
[00:55:57] ewindisch: although I'm not that concerned about security here, to be honest
[00:56:12] paras (paras!~darren@dslb-092-074-230-040.pools.arcor-ip.net) has quit (Quit: Verlassend)

[00:56:40] justdave (justdave!~dave@unaffiliated/justdave) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:56:49] ewindisch: yeah, seems reasonable.
[00:57:06] wagnerrp: anyway, if you do, there are some special considerations that need to be made for network access
[00:57:08] ewindisch: the backend is currently my ZFS nas. I figure it is a good place to throw a backend.
[00:57:23] ewindisch: oh?
[00:57:49] wagnerrp: specifically, with a jail, you only have a aliased IP with no subnet access
[00:58:03] wagnerrp: mythtv can work just fine in this fashion
[00:58:34] wagnerrp: however if you want things like UPnP or autodetection of HDHomeRun devices to work, you must build a custom kernel with the VIMAGE driver
[00:58:40] ewindisch: you mean I need to route through the host?
[00:58:44] wagnerrp: and give the jail a virtual network stack
[00:59:39] wagnerrp: well the issue is that when you use network aliases on a single subnet, only one can actually be given the subnet, or else you get screwy routing issues
[01:00:01] wagnerrp: broadcast and multicast doesnt work if you dont have a properly defined subnet
[01:01:05] ewindisch: okay. I'm pretty decent with networking so I'm sure I can figure it out when I get to it.
[01:01:59] ewindisch: well, I'm certainly feeling more confident now — I wasn't sure if the freebsd or raspberrypi part would be harder. I'm happy to know the freebsd side seems reasonable.
[01:02:14] wagnerrp: the RPI part will absolutely be the hard part

[01:02:48] ewindisch: that said, people have basic live streaming working. I don't know about the DVR stuff.
[01:03:02] wagnerrp: not a whole lot you can do with a mid-90s computer and <200MB of memory
[01:03:26] ewindisch: Yeah. It is low-power, though, which I like. Plus, I have a couple sitting around unused.
[01:03:53] ewindisch: (I also have a plenty of more capable boxes sitting around too, but the low power and low noise are attractive)
[01:04:23] wagnerrp: low noise, sure... low power, duty cycle is more important than absolute power consumption
[01:05:17] wagnerrp: when your system is only on a couple hours a day, a ~50W PC isn't that bad
[01:06:02] ewindisch: My backend uses 50W and it has a host disk, a raidz array, and an ssd  — besides the dual-core cpu and 8gb of ram.
[01:06:06] ewindisch: (at load)
[01:08:28] ewindisch: wagnerpp: well, /will/ it only run a couple hours a day? Am I really going to power the thing up every time I use it? My wife is on maternity leave – at least in the short term, it will be used quite a lot.
[01:08:53] ewindisch: My electric bill has increased over 20% this year. :-/
[01:09:12] ewindisch: (rather, my per kW/h charges for generation and transmission)
[01:09:15] wagnerrp: you can have it go into standby
[01:09:32] wagnerrp: power up from that state should only take a few seconds
[01:09:33] ewindisch: Yeah, I just don't trust power saving options. Maybe I'm jaded by many years of it never working.
[01:10:41] ewindisch: and well, I have the RaspberryPi. :)
[01:11:23] wagnerrp: for XBMC, ive heard mixed results, but it's still a work in progress
[01:11:24] ewindisch: my other option? a 16-core Opteron server… 300W at idle and loud as hell.
[01:11:33] wagnerrp: for mythtv, it's not even an option at current
[01:11:53] ewindisch: wagnerpp: yeah, I know. XBMC can stream from mythtv and do dvr functions
[01:11:55] ewindisch: it /might/ work.
[01:11:56] wagnerrp: the CPU has no chance of doing any video decoding, and there is no support for the hardware decompressor
[01:12:15] ewindisch: there is, actually.
[01:12:29] ewindisch: they have an MPEG2 license available now and it seems to work in XBMC
[01:12:36] ewindisch: (afaik on the latter)
[01:12:47] wagnerrp: mythtv has no support for the hardware decompressor on the RPi
[01:13:11] ewindisch: true – but I was optimistically hoping that the XBMC frontend to MythTV would solve that
[01:13:28] ewindisch: I'm also not opposed to adding OpenMax...
[01:13:47] wagnerrp: for that, you would want the other channel
[01:13:52] wagnerrp: :P
[01:13:53] ewindisch: ;-)
[01:14:01] ** ewindisch was a developer on LiViD; not a noob on doing video **
[01:14:31] wagnerrp: there are a lot of people who are, and get on the mailing list claiming "all you have to do is add..."
[01:14:53] wagnerrp: with no experience in what that actually entails
[01:15:20] ewindisch: yep… and even with openmax, well.. . it is /limited/ hardware.
[01:15:21] wagnerrp: beyond openmax support, there is also a memory consumption issue
[01:15:37] ewindisch: that said, I used to run MythTV on my Pentium II ;-)
[01:15:53] wagnerrp: no one has ever been very tight about memory usage on the frontend, since memory has never been much of a problem
[01:16:11] wagnerrp: there's a lot of places that could be cleaned up, but someone would still need to do it
[01:16:47] ewindisch: yep
[01:16:55] ewindisch: and again, I don't necessarily desire the mythtv frontend.
[01:16:58] wagnerrp: the new 512MB version would alleviate that somewhat
[01:17:02] ewindisch: as much as I desire /A/ frontend.

[01:26:50] ewindisch: awesome – thanks for the help. For now, I'll order that HDHomeRun, since at least that piece seems solvable.
[01:27:22] ewindisch: then I'll evaluate the frontend options. :)
[01:28:35] wagnerrp: are you intending to use this with verizon fios?
[01:28:40] wagnerrp: or just an antenna?
[01:28:43] ewindisch: antenna
[01:28:54] wagnerrp: ok, standard HDHR will work fine
[01:29:06] ewindisch: I'm ditching verizon's "cable" side and the TiVo, going back to MythTV and antenna
[01:29:53] ewindisch: in fact, I was originally going to do Hulu and have antenna for backup, but when I decided to rebuild my NAS and landed a spare RPI, I figured it would only be $90 for a brand-new HDHR
[01:30:30] ewindisch: assuming I can get this menagerie of parts to work

[20:46:03] wizbit: how many bugs in total has mythtv had since its release?

[22:51:18] [R]: justy like theres no differnece betwen ubuntu and kubuintu
[22:51:19] johnjacobjingerh: ok lol
[22:51:28] johnjacobjingerh: kubuntu*
[22:51:29] johnjacobjingerh: yea
[22:51:33] johnjacobjingerh: except for the GUI
[22:51:54] johnjacobjingerh: i wasnt sure if there were some GUI differences going to mythbuntu or something
[22:52:20] johnjacobjingerh: maybe it has settings in place to only load the front end or something
[22:52:26] tallnerd1985: Sorry to bug you guys, setting up my first MythTV backend. What's the deal on how to setup the database when doing setup?
[22:52:44] [R]: johnjacobjingerh: you can install the kubuntu packages in ubuntu just like you instal the mythbuntu packages in ubuntu
[22:52:46] [R]: its all the same cdrap
[22:53:11] [R]: tallnerd1985: the documetnation explains everything you need
[22:53:15] jpabq (jpabq!~jpabq@mythtv/developer/jpabq) has quit (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
[22:53:18] johnjacobjingerh: R yes i know i have the kubuntu packages and the regular ubuntu packages..
[22:54:11] tallnerd1985: [R]: I read but it seems like it does it during install but not in my case
[22:55:30] [R]: tallnerd1985: "during install"...
[22:55:47] johnjacobjingerh: ooo the cd does have live FrontEnd on it... that is actually very very useful
[22:56:23] johnjacobjingerh: also installs a bare minimum desktop to just run frontend and no other crap or services
[22:56:57] johnjacobjingerh: also has it's own control center for making setting changes and role changes
[22:57:30] jpabq (jpabq!~jpabq@mythtv/developer/jpabq) has joined #mythtv-users
[22:57:42] johnjacobjingerh: prob wont use it on my backend, but might use it on my HTPCs
[23:01:22] johnjacobjingerh: also does anyone have recomendations on whether it's possible to add my own custom subtitles to saved videos on mythtv
[23:01:41] johnjacobjingerh: like if i download a movie from somewhere and want to add a subtitle track
[23:02:03] ** [R] coughs **
[23:02:06] [R]: we dont discuss illegal things in here
[23:02:18] johnjacobjingerh: these arent illegal... they are home videos
[23:02:22] [R]: right...
[23:02:34] johnjacobjingerh: lol... nvm then

[23:05:20] [R]: right... now you're just changing the story

[23:37:03] dw805: bil6502: I am finally back from running errands for my wife. I replaced my pre-existing config.xml with the contents from the link. I still don't get QMYSQL driver loading properly, and QSqlDatabase still doesn't list any available drivers. Thinking about it, a bad config.xml might prevent me from connecting to the database, but it shouldn't prevent the driver from loading?

[23:40:07] uglyoldbob: how do i stop a recording in progress?
[23:40:23] paco_: i have create a database backup of my mythtv (i think that its for recordings) and now i m restoring my db but the recordings shows empty (and the folder got all my recordings)
[23:40:35] paco_: uglyoldbob, go to watch recordings, and press M and stop recording
[23:41:50] ewindisch: tallnerd1985: I've heard it works well from multiple sources.
[23:41:56] [R]: uglyoldbob: delete it
[23:43:38] wizbit: i have a idea for mythtv
[23:43:39] uglyoldbob: well, except i want to keep what was recorded so far
[23:43:53] wizbit: how about a terminal only version of mythtv-setup
[23:44:03] wizbit: even tv tuning done on a terminal with ncurses etc
[23:44:40] uglyoldbob: mythtv-setup segfaults when trying to scan channels on /dev/video0 for my pchdtv5500 card
[23:44:42] paco_: uglyoldbob, uses my method
[23:44:53] uglyoldbob: paco_: ok ill try that
[23:45:17] wagnerrp: tallnerd1985: yes, mythtv can truly work with the hdhomerun prime
[23:45:31] wagnerrp: in fact, many silicon dust employees use mythtv

[23:46:10] wagnerrp: however, the hdhomerun prime must follow the rules with regards to DRM
[23:46:42] paco_: nice, wagnerrp is here, cool
[23:46:44] wagnerrp: and due to the fact that mythtv is open source, and thus simply not possible to be licensed by cable labs to protect content received through a cablecard tuner
[23:47:09] wagnerrp: the hdhomerun prime, or any other cablecard tuner, is not authorized to send DRM'd material to mythtv
[23:47:17] paco_: wagnerrp, how can i restore my recordings? i have used the procedure of restore db but nothing pass..
[23:47:18] wagnerrp: it can be encrypted, but it cannot be marked as copy protected
[23:47:31] wagnerrp: restore... how?
[23:47:43] johnjacobjingerh: perhaps someday we will be able to get DRM support on mythtv :-(
[23:47:49] johnjacobjingerh: for now... I shall weep
[23:47:53] paco_: with mythbuntu bare
[23:48:10] wagnerrp: johnjacobjingerh: no, we will never be able to get DRM support on mythtv
[23:48:24] wagnerrp: mythtv is open source, it is not possible for open source projects to support drm
[23:48:29] johnjacobjingerh: hey never say never
[23:48:33] wagnerrp: yes, never
[23:48:35] johnjacobjingerh: at this time
[23:48:36] wagnerrp: can not happen
[23:48:40] wagnerrp: period
[23:48:46] johnjacobjingerh: who knows what 10,000 years shall bring
[23:49:01] johnjacobjingerh: maybe open source will one day rule the world
[23:49:13] wagnerrp: doesn't matter, the principles of the two concepts are such that they can never mix
[23:49:28] johnjacobjingerh: i see
[23:49:30] tallnerd1985: wagnerrp: Thanks for answers, I will try it tonight. Too bad MythTV doesn't work UNraid Servers :(
[23:49:37] wagnerrp: DRM is the ability to protect the content from the user
[23:49:46] johnjacobjingerh: from piracy
[23:49:54] wagnerrp: no, from anything
[23:49:56] bill6502: dw805: Makes sense. I was looking at line 19 of: http://pastebin.com/tZpBRxNq, I don't get that error. Is chsserver the host with your database.
[23:50:15] wagnerrp: tallnerd1985: eh? why wouldn't you be able to use mythtv with unraid storage?
[23:50:34] wagnerrp: johnjacobjingerh: don't delude yourself that DRM is intended to prevent piracy, it is not
[23:50:52] tallnerd1985: No packages available and I am a hill billy
[23:50:53] wagnerrp: the primary purpose of DRM is to control how users can use the content
[23:51:06] johnjacobjingerh: so much for that control
[23:51:09] johnjacobjingerh: lol
[23:51:22] wagnerrp: conversely, the principle of open source is to allow the user to make whatever modifications they want, and do whatever they want with the content
[23:51:33] johnjacobjingerh: the people they are most concerned about are the ones that can break through DRM
[23:51:45] wagnerrp: if the user can make modifications to the program, they can make modifications that remove the DRM protection from the program
[23:52:04] johnjacobjingerh: well on that note can I also hide the mythbuntu logo on the themes?
[23:52:16] wagnerrp: thus, an open source version of an application can never legitimately support any form of DRM
[23:52:23] johnjacobjingerh: i see
[23:52:36] johnjacobjingerh: which is why netflix doesnt work on linux i assume
[23:52:37] wagnerrp: with things like DVDs and decss, open source applications can access and use DRM'd content
[23:52:42] wagnerrp: buut that is not a legitimate use
[23:52:54] wagnerrp: netflix instant for PC use relies on silverlight
[23:53:04] wagnerrp: and silverlight only exists on Windows and OSX
[23:53:04] johnjacobjingerh: which doesnt port to linux cuz of it's DRM
[23:53:22] johnjacobjingerh: i am going to assume anyways
[23:53:23] wagnerrp: Linux has MoonLight, but moonlight lacks the drm implementation in silverlight
[23:53:28] johnjacobjingerh: yep
[23:53:43] uglyoldbob: so why does android get it then?
[23:53:48] wagnerrp: things like android are binary distributions, so while they are technically open source, if you make changes to that binary, netflix no longer functions
[23:53:49] johnjacobjingerh: which is ironic since android is essentially linux yet it can run netflix
[23:53:59] johnjacobjingerh: yea what uglyoldbob said
[23:54:06] [R]: johnjacobjingerh: 2 completely diffenret things
[23:54:07] wagnerrp: as user modifications to the binary mean the content can no longer be assured of protection
[23:54:18] [R]: johnjacobjingerh: android has drm frameworks
[23:54:35] [R]: johnjacobjingerh: and closed source parts
[23:54:36] wagnerrp: tallnerd1985: mythtv just uses storage through the filesystem
[23:54:36] tallnerd1985: Android is far from linux besides the kernel
[23:54:40] johnjacobjingerh: i see
[23:54:54] wagnerrp: if you want your filesystem to be backed by unraid, that's your own concern to take care of underneath mythtv
[23:55:05] wagnerrp: the two are independent and do not conflict
[23:55:33] wagnerrp: however note that just like any other parity-based redundancy, unraid is not well suited for anything that writes much data
[23:55:39] wagnerrp: it is primarily intended for archival storage
[23:55:47] johnjacobjingerh: tallnerd1985, just dont do what i did and partition your drive and store your content on another partition and change the storage directories (if you expect to use mythweb at all on the backend), i did that and now i'm going back
[23:55:52] natanojl (natanojl!~jonatan@c83-252-237-63.bredband.comhem.se) has quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[23:56:20] wagnerrp: johnjacobjingerh: how would that cause any trouble?
[23:56:20] johnjacobjingerh: yea i wouldnt use RAID either IMO
[23:56:37] johnjacobjingerh: well mythweb couldnt access my media after that
[23:56:46] johnjacobjingerh: i changed the symlinks too
[23:56:59] wagnerrp: probably because the user apache ran as did not have file permissions to those directories
[23:57:01] johnjacobjingerh: and it still got permission denied trying to stream content
[23:57:05] wagnerrp: and mythtv does not use symlinks for anything
[23:57:14] johnjacobjingerh: it ran as root and i did set file permissions
[23:57:16] johnjacobjingerh: mythweb
[23:57:19] johnjacobjingerh: MYTHWEB
[23:57:24] wagnerrp: apache
[23:57:46] tallnerd1985: wagnerrp: Have you heard of anyone install Mythweb on UNraid directly?
[23:58:28] johnjacobjingerh: i dont know what UNraid is but I know what RAID is and it's practically invisible to the OS and all software
[23:58:28] wagnerrp: mythweb is nothing more than a PHP web application run through apache
[23:58:31] uglyoldbob: so my version of mythbackend is 2:0.25.2+fixes.20120802.46cab93–0ubuntu1, what is the best way of submitting some sort of crash report? (I have multiple frontends and upgrading them all by compiling from source seems unreasonable)
[23:58:44] wagnerrp: unraid is basically RAID5 but without striping
[23:58:53] johnjacobjingerh: well then i dunno why it didnt work wagnerp but i couldnt get it to work
[23:58:53] wagnerrp: you have a bunch of independent disks, and one more disk with parity
[23:58:58] johnjacobjingerh: ah
[23:59:00] johnjacobjingerh: yea
[23:59:05] johnjacobjingerh: i see
[23:59:15] wagnerrp: for reads, everything operates independently
[23:59:19] johnjacobjingerh: my machine doesnt support RAID anyways
[23:59:25] johnjacobjingerh: lol
[23:59:37] wagnerrp: for writes, you have to read all the disks, and then calculate the parity to write to the parity disk
[23:59:37] johnjacobjingerh: well actually it does but i'd never use it for mythtv
[23:59:52] uglyoldbob: isnt that raid4?
