[00:02:33] jgautier: does the EPG have its own context in the key editing or is grouped in with the TV Playback?
[00:03:57] jgautier: i want to use backspace to exit the EPG and go back to watching live tv but cant find where i can set that anywhere in the edit keys section.

[00:24:18] johnjacobjingerh: ok long time supporter here but never set up a mythtv system before and thinking about doing it for my house... couple questions tho
[00:24:46] sphery: saintdev: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Find_orphans.py
[00:25:05] johnjacobjingerh: 1) I currently have 9 cable boxes (all DVR) and I want to get rid of them and perhaps get a mythtv front end box for every device and a central server (my desktop pc)
[00:25:22] johnjacobjingerh: my question is can I get a number of TV tuner cards and stream live tv to all my front ends?
[00:25:29] saintdev: sphery: the entries are still in the database, so they're not orphans.
[00:25:34] johnjacobjingerh: and have each one access a different channel that is
[00:25:42] sphery: saintdev: they're orphaned if there are no files
[00:25:48] sphery: saintdev: orphaned metadata
[00:25:51] saintdev: sphery: the files are still there too
[00:25:54] sphery: it goes both ways
[00:25:55] johnjacobjingerh: my goal is to essentially get rid of the cable boxes and lower my bill since i pay $10 per mont for each box
[00:26:11] saintdev: sphery: they're just not accessable from the frontend
[00:26:43] johnjacobjingerh: i dont know if i can stream live tv multiple channels at the same time to multiple devices
[00:26:57] sphery: saintdev: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Q . . . ecordings.3F
[00:27:03] sphery: johnjacobjingerh: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Recording_Digital_Cable
[00:27:57] johnjacobjingerh: sphery i did read that, but i cant seem to figure out if i can stream liveTV
[00:28:01] johnjacobjingerh: not recording it
[00:28:10] sphery: mythtv records everything
[00:28:17] sphery: whether you watch while recording is irrelevant
[00:28:22] johnjacobjingerh: but can it stream livetv
[00:28:27] johnjacobjingerh: is my question
[00:28:30] johnjacobjingerh: like slingbox does
[00:28:34] johnjacobjingerh: but over my lan
[00:28:39] sphery: and a mythtv frontend can watch any recording from a mythtv backend
[00:28:42] saintdev: sphery: done that already, they're not anywhere in the frontend.
[00:28:59] sphery: johnjacobjingerh: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Executive_Overview
[00:29:06] johnjacobjingerh: yes but i dont want to watch a file i previously recorded
[00:29:15] sphery: johnjacobjingerh: 10.21 20:28:09 <+sphery> mythtv records everything
[00:29:22] sphery: i.e. "Live TV" is a recording
[00:29:36] sphery: (a recording in progress)
[00:29:48] johnjacobjingerh: so i can watch the channel on remote devices?
[00:29:55] sphery: if you can record it, yes
[00:30:05] sphery: where "remote devices" = mythtv frontend systems
[00:30:36] johnjacobjingerh: ok... that brings another question... if i do this and i have 9 people streaming from the device what would i need spec wise
[00:30:44] sphery: and where "remote devices" = random stuff that supports some level of UPnP or <other "media sharing magic">, then perhaps
[00:30:50] johnjacobjingerh: i already have a gigabit lan and all my wifi devices are N speeds
[00:31:13] johnjacobjingerh: every TV has an ethernet jack Cat6e
[00:31:15] sphery: saintdev: can you get me a screenshot of your backend status page
[00:31:38] johnjacobjingerh: also how do I deal with premium channels? such as HBO and Starz?
[00:31:40] sphery: johnjacobjingerh: you'd be trading 9 cable boxes for 9 mythtv frontend systems (=PCs)
[00:31:44] johnjacobjingerh: i assume the tv tuner cards dont pick those up
[00:31:47] sphery: the frontend does the most work
[00:31:48] johnjacobjingerh: sphery yes
[00:32:02] jgautier: i changed my .Xmodmap so "keycode 22 = Escape" and its working when I am in live TV and i press my backspace key it goes back to the main menu..but in the EPG it does nothing
[00:32:04] johnjacobjingerh: ok good to know
[00:32:13] johnjacobjingerh: so as long as my LAN can handle it should be fine
[00:32:17] saintdev: johnjacobjingerh: premium channels (with a cablecard compatable device) depend on the cable company
[00:32:30] johnjacobjingerh: ah.. i hope comcast does that lol
[00:32:45] sphery: johnjacobjingerh: no idea on how much you can get across a network... HDTV can be up to about 19Mbps (generally will be about 14 for a good channel)
[00:32:47] saintdev: most cable companies have them set to recorde once, which you cannot tune with myth
[00:32:49] jgautier: johnjacojingerh i was not able to watch showtime with comcast
[00:32:50] johnjacobjingerh: i'm prob gonna need two quad tuners or something
[00:33:08] johnjacobjingerh: sphery i can push up to a gigabit on each port right now
[00:33:11] saintdev: for comcast they are for sure copy once
[00:33:16] johnjacobjingerh: but i am wired for support up to 10gb
[00:33:44] johnjacobjingerh: i have a killer infrastructure :-P
[00:33:57] saintdev: sphery: frontend status or mythweb status?
[00:33:59] johnjacobjingerh: thanks to free equipment from cisco
[00:34:19] sphery: saintdev: backend status (which is "Backend Status" in MythWeb)
[00:34:26] sphery: or available directly from the backend
[00:34:40] sphery: mythweb should be easiest by far
[00:37:40] sphery: johnjacobjingerh: also, one other point to note... MythTV is not a "free" DVR--it's generally expensive in terms of equipment, time (especially) for setup and maintenance, and even power usage... It's really a luxury DVR that's Free (as in freedom) (but also limited by its dependence on external sources of videos, which often contain DRM that prevents its use in MythTV)
[00:38:00] johnjacobjingerh: i see
[00:38:02] johnjacobjingerh: so like netflix
[00:38:13] johnjacobjingerh: that wouldnt work
[00:38:18] johnjacobjingerh: and hulu i imagine
[00:38:21] johnjacobjingerh: which is fine
[00:38:24] sphery: I've spent a ton more on my system than I would have over the 8 1/2 years I've been using MythTV than I would have spent on DVRs from cable/satellite providers
[00:38:46] johnjacobjingerh: i have currently a dual quad core R610 dell PowerEdge
[00:38:48] sphery: and, right, Netflix won't work (you'll need an external system, like a Roku or PS3 or Wii or XBox 360 + XBox Live)
[00:38:50] johnjacobjingerh: with 192GB of RAM
[00:38:57] johnjacobjingerh: it's actually the tower model
[00:39:01] johnjacobjingerh: not the blade
[00:39:13] johnjacobjingerh: and i have a 16TB RAID 10 SAS enclosure
[00:39:39] johnjacobjingerh: it has 4 10GB network cards
[00:39:44] johnjacobjingerh: gbps i mean
[00:39:46] johnjacobjingerh: not GB
[00:39:55] johnjacobjingerh: that's my backend
[00:40:07] johnjacobjingerh: i planned on getting some fitpcs for my frontend
[00:40:32] johnjacobjingerh: i dont get netflix on those as is anyways...
[00:40:43] johnjacobjingerh: i'm more concerned about not renting cable boxes
[00:40:50] johnjacobjingerh: at all
[00:41:07] johnjacobjingerh: my comcast bill is now 400 per month
[00:41:29] johnjacobjingerh: i may even dump my hbo premiums and just get the shows and movies elsewhere
[00:42:29] johnjacobjingerh: I love liquidations lol
[00:42:36] saintdev: sphery: http://i.imgur.com/zem5U.png
[00:43:14] sphery: saintdev: how many shows are in your Deleted recording group
[00:43:16] johnjacobjingerh: this company went under that just opened up and spent lots of money on their data center... i got two boxes of CAT6e cable, 4 Cisco switches (gigabit) a cisco router, 2 cisco 802.11N wireless AP
[00:43:22] johnjacobjingerh: and the dell server
[00:43:33] johnjacobjingerh: so that's gonna be my backend i think
[00:43:49] saintdev: sphery: 1
[00:44:19] sphery: saintdev: how big is it (according to mythweb or frontend--hit I in the frontend 2x to find the size)
[00:44:42] saintdev: 19.32 GB
[00:45:24] sphery: then that's correct (that's the "Space Used by Deleted Recordings: 20,901 MB")
[00:45:36] sphery: are these shows you're looking for in the Live TV recording group?
[00:46:37] saintdev: no

[02:50:19] wagnerrp: mythweb is technically not a plugin
[02:50:30] wagnerrp: it is a separate web application, run using apache
[02:51:17] wagnerrp: just download the repository, make sure the included mythweb.conf is stuffed somewhere apache will include it, and the paths defined in it are correct
[02:51:22] wagnerrp: then just restart apache
[02:51:51] wagnerrp: the mythplugins directory in the main repository only includes binaries that need to be compiled against the main application
[03:13:16] johnjacobjingerh: wait.. there's a repo for it?
[03:13:19] johnjacobjingerh: oh
[03:13:30] johnjacobjingerh: ummm... sudo apt-get install mythweb?

[03:56:21] johnjacobjingerh: bleh.. i hope mythtv comes out with an interface like tversity's flash interface soon
[03:56:59] wagnerrp: you actually _want_ something to be written in flash?
[03:57:09] wagnerrp: no wonder you have such a massive machine
[03:59:13] johnjacobjingerh: lol
[03:59:19] johnjacobjingerh: no that was an example
[03:59:30] johnjacobjingerh: i like the flashlib interface that tversity has
[03:59:44] wagnerrp: there is an in-progress rewrite of the setup utility
[03:59:59] wagnerrp: intended to get rid of the separate application, and the need to run it on other computers
[04:00:07] Sharky112065: I really miss the place shifting that SageTV had. It worked really well.
[04:00:08] wagnerrp: and instead doing it as a web application build into the master backend
[04:00:23] johnjacobjingerh: like this: http://24.63.106.216:41952/flashlib
[04:03:20] johnjacobjingerh: oh right u guys cant access that lol

[04:03:29] johnjacobjingerh: forgot i had it passworded
[04:07:10] wagnerrp: oh, you mean frontend, not configuration
[04:07:24] wagnerrp: there is a HLS server now built into the backend
[04:07:44] wagnerrp: with a simple proof-of-concept page on the internal webserver that allows access to it
[04:07:52] wagnerrp: but no clean frontend to use it through
[04:08:09] wagnerrp: its primary use at the moment is with Torc for iOS
[04:12:22] johnjacobjingerh: i see
[04:12:36] johnjacobjingerh: at least i can still watch my videos through the config thing
[04:12:46] johnjacobjingerh: tho after encoding it to flash that is
[04:12:48] johnjacobjingerh: :-(
[04:12:54] wagnerrp: config thing?
[04:13:05] johnjacobjingerh: through the mythweb
[04:13:07] johnjacobjingerh: i mean
[04:13:18] wagnerrp: it's live transcode, you don't have to do it ahead of time
[04:13:52] wagnerrp: but it's not very capable... it needs to have file access to the recordings, and there is no seeking beyond what has already been transcoded
[04:13:53] johnjacobjingerh: hmmm but for some reason my mp4s are being played by quicktime, if i put an mkv it plays with VLC browser plugin
[04:13:59] johnjacobjingerh: and if i use an FLV it plays with flash
[04:14:12] wagnerrp: wait, what are you referring to?
[04:14:28] johnjacobjingerh: wel i'm trying to stream over the web to my computer
[04:14:31] johnjacobjingerh: not using a front end
[04:14:36] johnjacobjingerh: just doing it from the website
[04:14:42] saintdev: wagnerrp: i think he's talking about the watch thing in mythweb
[04:14:45] wagnerrp: there is a mechanism in mythweb, where if you open the details page, it will transcode in real-time to flash
[04:14:53] wagnerrp: i dont believe it is enabled by default
[04:14:59] johnjacobjingerh: wait really?
[04:15:16] wagnerrp: are you actually streaming over the _internet_ or just your home network?
[04:15:28] johnjacobjingerh: home network, but also the WAN
[04:15:36] johnjacobjingerh: i have a 50mbps upstream
[04:15:37] wagnerrp: then just use the asx link
[04:15:47] wagnerrp: or the direct download
[04:15:57] johnjacobjingerh: but then i have to wait for it to download right?
[04:16:07] wagnerrp: the only reason one might want to transcode anything is because they have too slow a network to transfer the original file
[04:16:25] wagnerrp: whether or not you have to wait is entirely dependent on your choice of player
[04:17:03] johnjacobjingerh: i was just hoping for a quick click on video and stream do computer (like youtube or hulu kinda lol)
[04:17:12] johnjacobjingerh: to computer*
[04:17:24] wagnerrp: you really seem to like flash...
[04:17:31] johnjacobjingerh: thats just an example
[04:17:39] johnjacobjingerh: it could be silverlight for all i care
[04:17:40] johnjacobjingerh: lol
[04:17:55] johnjacobjingerh: just flash makes it easy to guarentee whatever computer i am using can play it
[04:17:59] johnjacobjingerh: since all my devices play flash
[04:18:17] wagnerrp: any UPNP capable application should be able to stream directly from the backend
[04:18:30] wagnerrp: any application capable of using ASX files should be able to stream through mythweb
[04:18:32] johnjacobjingerh: can it do that over the WAN tho
[04:18:45] wagnerrp: by "WAN" you mean "the internet"?
[04:18:48] wagnerrp: no
[04:18:49] johnjacobjingerh: yes
[04:18:50] johnjacobjingerh: oh
[04:18:52] johnjacobjingerh: :-(
[04:19:01] wagnerrp: UPNP is local logical network only
[04:19:01] johnjacobjingerh: the other option was a VPN tunnel
[04:19:04] johnjacobjingerh: lol
[04:19:09] wagnerrp: you can make it work over a VPN
[04:19:16] johnjacobjingerh: but that's too much of a hassle
[04:19:21] johnjacobjingerh: lol
[04:21:31] johnjacobjingerh: wait... wagnerrp how do i enable this flash thing u are talking about...

[19:26:38] aranc23: I have a 0.25 backend, at it is reporting it's in America/New York timezone (so mythfrontend informs me), but the system is set to America/Chicago
[19:27:06] aranc23: I have verified the /etc/localtime file, truncated my program table, tried none and auto as a setting for xmltv data on the backend
[19:27:19] aranc23: how does 0.25 backend determine what timezone it's in?
[19:36:52] oobe: anyone know if mythweb can work with apache 2.4 I am having problems getting it to work after upgrading distro versions
[19:37:08] oobe: I tried downgrading apache but it didnt work either
[19:40:49] jams: aranc23- it does read it from the system..nothing in the db
[19:40:59] jams: which distro
[19:41:25] jams: oobe- i'm sure it will work with apache 2.4 it more then likely a php problem that your having or apache misconfig

[19:48:39] aranc23: it contains America/New York
[19:48:51] jams: looks like it reads TZ, then /etc/timezone then /etc/sysconfig/clock then /etc/localtime
[19:48:58] jams: first one it finds wins
[19:49:14] aranc23: but I didn't know it existed so I set /etc/localtime by copying the correct file into /etc/localtime
[19:49:17] aranc23: now I know haha
[19:50:09] aranc23: the comment actually says in that file: This file is only for evaluation by system-config-date, do not rely on its contents elsewhere
[19:50:13] jams: on a redhat system sysconfig/clock is the correct one
[19:50:37] aranc23: as the comment indicates, it isn't meant to be read by anything but system-config-date
[19:50:40] aranc23: which I didn't use
[19:51:13] jams: well thats just redhat preferred..doesn't really matter to myth

[22:57:47] osmium: Hi everyone: I've decided to become a MythTV user after becoming dissatisfied with the DVRs offered by my cable company. I've got MythTV set up on my system. However, I am unable to record shows or watch live television using the HD PVR connected to my set-top box. If I attempt to watch TV, I simply see a black screen that never goes away (unless I kill Myth Frontend). And my recordings are just black thumbnails – no video. Not sure what to do at this
