[00:00:15] rhpot1991: configured on new installs
[00:01:44] skd5aner: Well, I don't mind setting up a storage group, although I don't know why the default of it leveraging a subdirectory under ~/.mythtv/ wouldn't work
[00:01:49] skd5aner: although, apparently, it's not
[00:02:04] rhpot1991: using ~ can get you into some funky permission issues
[00:02:09] rhpot1991: so we recommend not using it

[10:41:15] N0BOX: Name141: the vast majority of people would suggest that you get one of the HDHomeRun tuners over those usb sticks
[10:42:04] N0BOX: but if you can find one of the usb tuners that has a chipset that is in the known working list, then it should certainly be possible
[10:43:42] Name141: N0BOX: those big daddies start at $85
[10:45:11] Name141: I also don't have a port left on the router
[10:55:22] N0BOX: :/
[10:55:45] N0BOX: I never had any luck with pci cards or usb sticks, personally
[10:56:30] N0BOX: some cards are gold, but it appears to be pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to cards and usb tuners
[10:56:58] Name141: N0BOX: I can't find a "US" page.. like this one. http://parker1.co.uk/mythtv_novafw.php
[10:57:18] N0BOX: I finally gave up and got an hdhomerun and it made everything pretty simple.
[10:58:19] N0BOX: yeah
[10:59:48] N0BOX: It looks to me as if the europeans were using digital broadcast before the usa was... and it appears that the american tuners got lumped in with the already-existing dvb stuff from europe in the linux kernel
[11:00:05] N0BOX: and it was so confusing that I gave up
[11:00:18] Name141: There isn't a MythTV port for windows btw?
[11:00:24] N0BOX: someone else will probably wake up and help you eventually
[11:00:35] N0BOX: there is a port of the frontend, I think
[11:00:44] Name141: "frontend" ?
[11:00:48] N0BOX: but I don't remember seeing the backend
[11:01:10] Name141: ..backend?
[11:01:16] N0BOX: the frontend is basically a collection of programs that lets you set up the recordings and watch the recordings
[11:01:30] N0BOX: the backend actually records things and keeps a database
[11:01:50] Name141: So the frontend is needed to watch TV?
[11:01:55] N0BOX: right

[11:02:37] N0BOX: but the backend can function without a frontend
[11:03:07] N0BOX: or the backend can serve a bunch of different frontends
[11:04:10] N0BOX: time for me to get to bed, though
[11:04:15] N0BOX: good luck to you!

[15:35:05] pedrocr: how do I disable commercial detection completely on 0.26?
[15:35:24] pedrocr: I've been running the nightlies and noticed it taking up 100% cpu
[15:35:34] pedrocr: since I have no real use for it I'd like to disable it
[15:35:52] pyther (pyther!~pyther@unaffiliated/pyther) has quit (Quit: leaving)
[15:38:22] N0BOX: pedrocr: in .25 there is a setup menu in the frontend that allows you to choose the default settings for new recordings, and it sounds like you have commercial detection enabled on all of your recordings.
[15:39:14] pedrocr: N0BOX, I'm running 0.26, would that be the same?
[15:39:17] N0BOX: if .26 is not much different than .25, you should be able to find that setting in those menus
[15:39:22] pedrocr: I've looked around and can't find it
[15:39:41] pedrocr: I've found the settings for which type of commercial detection I'd like but not whether or not to do it
[15:40:12] N0BOX: once you changed the default setting, though, any recordings that you have set up will still have to be changed, because they will still have commercial detection enabled
[15:40:39] N0BOX: the type to use is in the backend setup, right?
[15:41:19] N0BOX: what you[re looking for would be in the setup menu of the frontend
[15:41:21] pedrocr: It I got at it in the fronted in Setup->Video->General
[15:41:30] N0BOX: ahh
[15:42:16] N0BOX: well, I'm still kinda new to mythtv, so I still just fumble around until I find the settings I am looking for
[15:43:48] N0BOX: I have had to go through all my recording to change the type of user jobs I want run (I have been working on having all my recordings automatically transcoded to h.264), and the option to run the commercial detection stuff is also in there
[15:43:59] pedrocr: I haven't used it for long either and I'll probably end up uninstalling it, I haven't been too impressed with it
[15:44:11] N0BOX: it's in the post processing options for each recording
[15:44:27] pedrocr: I'm fine with old recordings, I just don't want it to keep doing it on new ones

[16:02:24] N0BOX: yep, Setup->Video->General, hit next twice, uncheck run commercial detection
[16:02:48] tgm4883: N0BOX, is that per backend?
[16:03:11] N0BOX: then you have to go through every recording that you have set up to run and change the rules to turn off commercial detection in the post processing section

[16:04:35] tgm4883: N0BOX, so the other way to do it would be to go into mythtv-setup and say that backend can't flag commercials
[16:04:37] N0BOX: he must have it enabled by default
[16:05:07] tgm4883: depending on how many recording rules he has vs how many backends he has one way is easier than the other

[16:05:53] tgm4883: although if it's taking 100% CPU, it might be better to go into mythtv-setup and see what he has the priority set at
[16:06:03] tgm4883: maybe it's set to go as fast as it can

[16:18:09] wagnerrp: MythTV only stores what hostname and what storage group the recordings are stored in
[16:18:23] wagnerrp: at time of playback, it will search among all paths defined for that storage group
[16:18:33] wagnerrp: so as long as the recording exists in one of those, you will be fine
[16:18:59] wagnerrp: note that if you are going to be changing hostnames, there is a special measure you must perform to migrate everything over to the new hostname
[16:19:11] wagnerrp: it should all be detailed on the backup/restore page on the wiki
[16:20:57] snafu: Thanks for the help. I did look at the wiki but the impact and it said " Copy all media (recordings, videos, music, etc) from the old machine to the same directory structure on the new machine." Hence my question. I'll give it a try.
[16:22:09] wagnerrp: the video and music libraries are different, but as long as the settings for your base paths have been updated for the new locations, you should be fine

[21:29:40] wagnerrp: well now that they have an expanded memory version available, it actually wouldn't be *that* bad running the frontend
[21:29:47] wizbit: :O
[21:29:50] wagnerrp: but you've still got the whole video decoding issue to deal with
[21:30:50] wizbit: what about if it was SD only
[21:31:03] wagnerrp: still no
[21:31:07] wizbit: ok
[21:31:14] wagnerrp: maybe if it was SD RTJPEG
[21:31:41] wagnerrp: the CPU on that thing is really terrible
[21:31:45] wagnerrp: i mean late 90s terrible
[21:31:59] wizbit: eeek
[21:32:13] wagnerrp: its roughly equivalent to a low end Pentium II
[21:32:20] wizbit: jeeze

[21:34:58] wagnerrp: heh, seems i was doing too many things when i responded
[21:35:24] wagnerrp: my comments were fairly incomprehensible
[21:36:49] williammanda: wizbit, the frontends tell me they can't connect to the backend
[21:37:15] wagnerrp: anyway, just as a personal preference, i avoid USB for anything beyond simple accessories (keyboard, mouse, etc...)

[21:44:07] wizbit: williammanda: a default menu should come up on the frontend, just re-enter the backend ip etc
[21:44:20] wagnerrp: no
[21:44:29] wagnerrp: the frontend never asks you where the backend is
[21:44:35] wagnerrp: the frontend asks you where the database is
[21:44:42] wagnerrp: and the database tells the frontend where the backend is
[21:45:13] wagnerrp: it's the same thing for most people, but nevertheless, it is an important distinction
[22:02:34] williammanda: wizbit, it doesn't come up while in the mythtv menu

[22:45:38] lapion: wagnerrp, in my area there is dvb-t with some encrypted and some unencrypted channels, however the guide information on the encrypted channels is non encrypted, those channels are on cable as analog however without guide information, is it possible to use that guide information for the analog channels ?
[22:46:06] wagnerrp: i dont know
[22:46:30] wagnerrp: i know it has been discussed repeatedly over the years, i don't believe any such support has ever been implemented
