[01:35:45] wisenuts: what tuners are you using?
[01:36:02] mattwj2002: hdhomerun dual and homerun prime
[01:36:13] mattwj2002: I think the dual it the right one
[01:36:19] mattwj2002: the original one
[01:36:38] mattwj2002: 4 programs at once baby yeah!
[01:36:42] mattwj2002: :P
[01:36:58] mattwj2002: even more if they are on the same multiplex
[01:37:16] mattwj2002: in theory up to 20
[01:37:25] wagnerrp: 5
[01:37:32] mattwj2002: right
[01:37:36] mattwj2002: 4 X 5 = 20
[01:37:45] wagnerrp: 5x2 + 3x1
[01:37:58] mattwj2002: nope
[01:37:59] wagnerrp: prime can only record one show per tuner

[01:38:12] wagnerrp: (when used with a cablecard)

[01:38:21] mattwj2002: I don't have a cablecard
[01:38:22] mattwj2002: :)
[01:38:34] wagnerrp: three

[01:47:31] mattwj2002: I recorded stuff on tons of channels
[01:50:04] monkeypet: wisenuts: yes, I use a cable card with the HDHR.
[01:50:06] monkeypet: prime.
[01:50:48] wisenuts: and what does everyone use for commercial detection? Thats most accurate?
[01:51:01] wagnerrp: mythtv
[01:51:56] mattwj2002: wisenuts getting a cable card going is a pain
[01:52:08] mattwj2002: it took me a few hours with comcast
[01:52:15] wisenuts: wagnerrp: logo detection?
[01:52:24] monkeypet: mattwj2002: i walked into a branch office and took 1min to come out with one.
[01:52:37] mattwj2002: no that part was easy
[01:52:37] monkeypet: mattwj2002: Activated it with comcast in 15 mins.
[01:52:37] wagnerrp: just mythtv's internal detection defaults
[01:52:43] mattwj2002: I meant getting it actived
[01:52:50] mattwj2002: activated
[01:53:10] mattwj2002: I ended up talking to like 3 idiots until I found a guy that knew something
[01:53:17] mattwj2002: then it was like 15 minutes or less
[01:53:24] monkeypet: Super easy! I would recommend a cablecard!
[01:53:40] mattwj2002: me too
[01:53:42] mattwj2002: :)
[01:53:48] mattwj2002: well worth it
[01:53:57] mattwj2002: I would have one.....but I don't need it right now
[01:54:01] monkeypet: I love it so much!
[01:54:14] mattwj2002: I don't have any encrypted channels
[01:54:23] mattwj2002: that I am subscribed to
[01:54:25] mattwj2002: :)
[01:55:14] monkeypet: i think comcast charges me $1/month to rent the cablecard. Multiple mythtv frontends can watch LiveTV.
[01:55:40] mattwj2002: I only get 20 channels right now
[01:55:47] mattwj2002: if I had a full package
[01:56:02] mattwj2002: I definitely would have a cable card
[01:56:49] wisenuts: wagnerrp: Isn't there multiple ways to flagg commercials
[01:57:02] wisenuts: I worry to much is getting cropped out
[01:57:03] mattwj2002: wisenuts yes there is
[01:57:14] wisenuts: 30 min shows are like 19–21 minutes
[01:57:18] wisenuts: seems crazy
[01:57:25] wagnerrp: there are a couple different strategies you can use
[01:57:32] wagnerrp: but typically everyone just uses the default
[01:57:42] wagnerrp: 21 minutes sounds about right
[01:57:52] wagnerrp: besides, it's not like mythtv removes the video
[01:58:03] mattwj2002: *sneezes*
[01:58:05] wagnerrp: it just marks it for the player to skip that section of video
[01:58:24] wagnerrp: it's completely non-destructive
[01:58:40] wisenuts: i destroy my commercial but lists
[01:58:42] wisenuts: :)
[01:58:51] wisenuts: i run mythutil --gencutlist
[01:58:56] mattwj2002: :O
[01:59:01] wagnerrp: well that's your own stupid fault then
[01:59:03] wisenuts: and then mythtranscode --honercutlist
[01:59:11] mattwj2002: how big is your hard drive wisenuts?
[01:59:19] wagnerrp: there's good reason why that behavior is not built into mythtv, and you have to force it to behave that way
[01:59:19] wisenuts: well why waste the space on commercials
[01:59:29] wagnerrp: because the commercial detector isn't reliable
[01:59:43] wagnerrp: if you want to cut commercials, spend the few minutes developing a proper cutlist in edit mode
[02:01:00] wisenuts: mattwj2002: 2TB
[02:01:42] mattwj2002: so why do you need to save space?
[02:02:46] wagnerrp: because 2TB only gets you ~300hrs of recordings
[02:02:59] mattwj2002: 2 weeks worth isn't enough?
[02:03:15] wisenuts: I like to keep my stuff i've recorded.
[02:03:18] wagnerrp: nope
[02:03:26] mattwj2002: buy more hard drives
[02:03:39] wisenuts: i just try to be efficient with my space
[02:05:17] wisenuts: I'll keep entire seasons

[21:24:55] bodiless: By the way in Probed info: I see "Failed to open"
[21:24:57] justinh: if there's only one tv tuner it'll likely pick up the correct one
[21:25:21] justinh: make sure the user you run mythtv-setup as is a member of the 'video' group
[21:25:23] firl (firl!~firl@cpe-67-10-153-16.satx.res.rr.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[21:25:23] bodiless: should I leave the vdeo device empty then?
[21:25:39] justinh: should be /dev/video0
[21:25:45] justinh: so select that
[21:25:55] justinh: would've thought it'd have highlighted that already
[21:26:02] bodiless: I am user nikos and here are my groups (nikos cdrom floppy dip video plugdev scanner netdev vboxusers mythtv)
[21:26:12] justinh: you'll also need to ensure that nothing else is using the tuner
[21:26:34] justinh: and that the user mythbackend will eventually run as also has access privileges for it by being a member of the video group
[21:26:42] bodiless: there is no drop down menu so should I type it in?
[21:26:48] justinh: there should be
[21:27:05] bodiless: well there is but its empty
[21:28:21] justinh: anyway, I'm off to bed. was woken up at silly o'clock today
[21:28:54] bodiless: OK thanks justin ... any other helpers?
[21:29:36] bodiless: When I run xawtv it says: vid-open-auto: using analog TV device /dev/video0
[21:29:51] bodiless: so I;ll try to pu this in mythtv
[21:33:06] wagnerrp: bodiless: are you trying to do analog or digital?

[21:33:18] bodiless: analog
[21:33:45] wagnerrp: what tuner card?

[21:34:35] bodiless: hauppauge 1100 (or 1110) I am not sure any more
[21:35:17] wagnerrp: not worth bothering with
[21:36:48] bodiless: Really? Where I live there is only analog. Digital should have been here since 2009 but we are still waiting ...
[21:36:59] wagnerrp: but you have a framegrabber
[21:37:07] wagnerrp: if you want to do analog, you really want a hardware encoder
[21:38:08] bodiless: Whats a framegrabber? (pardon my ignorance ...)
[21:39:15] wagnerrp: a hardware encoder captures the audio and video, compresses it, multiplexes it, and feeds mythtv an easy-to-use MPEG file

[21:39:31] wagnerrp: a framegrabber captures the audio and video... and then leaves mythtv to do the rest
[21:40:07] bodiless: So you are suggesting that I need to buy a framegrabber?
[21:40:20] wagnerrp: im suggesting you have a framegrabber
[21:40:31] wagnerrp: you _can_ use it for recording in mythtv, but it's advised against
[21:41:36] bodiless: Oh I see. Well, I bought this card cause I was reading that its working with linux ... probably I was not reading carefull or in the right places.
[21:42:22] devinheitmueller: It should work in Linux. It is just not a great choice for MythTV because it doesn't have an encoder.
[21:44:30] bodiless: OK because I have spent so many of my nights trying to see mythtv working I don't want to abandon this project so easy. I wouldn't mind trying with another card. Would it be to much to ask you suggesting one? One with an encoder?
[21:45:03] bodiless: Just to check quickly if I can get one here locally ...

[21:55:30] devinheitmueller: bodiless: It should work, it's just advised for people to use hardware with encoders. That said, there are people using framegrabbers.
[21:57:05] bodiless: I know it should work, thats what I read in the guides its just me that can't figure out how ...
[21:59:25] devinheitmueller: For analog you want to use a v4l device type associated with /dev/video0. For digital you want to select DVB for /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0
[22:00:42] bodiless: OK I cleaned everything and starting over again following the guide at mythtv. First problem. I am trying to set the initial database with the distribution specific way (debian) and after $mysql < mc.sql I get "bash: mc.sql: No such file or directory"
[22:00:45] devinheitmueller: In short, you don't want to use the IVTV type, and you definitely don't want to try to use the V4L type with /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0.

[22:02:02] bodiless: Yes, lets go step by step because before when I used the V4L type with /dev/video0 I got errors again.
[22:03:29] bodiless: So how to I set the initial database? The $mysql < mc.sql doesn;t work. Should I use the other way I was using so far? mysql -u root -p; grant ALL on mythconverg.* to mythtv@localhost;

[22:58:53] bodiless: Hi again ... With the help of devinheitmueller I think I made some progress. The card seems to be recognised this time and i eventually got to the step where it performs a scan for channels. I tried an initial one with East Europe frequency but it didn't find any channels. Now I am trying with "try-all" and it got up to 625 but nothing yet. Will this go for very long? And why doesn't it find any channels?
