[17:01:42] wagnerrp: do you know what it means when they say "128bit ram"?
[17:02:35] wagnerrp: 128-bit is just the bus width
[17:02:45] wagnerrp: and bus width times memory clock rate gives you bandwidth
[17:03:06] wagnerrp: the clock rates in modern hardware are so much higher than even a few years ago
[17:03:29] wagnerrp: the lowest 64-bit cards have absolutely no trouble meeting the requirements of the video processing shader code
[17:03:32] IReboot: tgm4883: If you compile it yourself it is found in git directory sub directory "mythtv/mythtv/bindings/python/MythTV/ttvdb/ttvdb-example.conf"
[17:04:39] hotwings: yeah i understand its related.. and i know that one of my 64bit 1gb ddr3 gt220 cards cant do temporal spatial on 1080i, while a 128bit 1gb ddr5 can
[17:05:30] hotwings: the memory clock on the 64bit one is 3400mhz, core clock 550mhz
[17:05:40] hotwings: not sure off-hand about the 128bit card
[17:06:47] [R]: the same gt220?
[17:06:50] wagnerrp: ive only ever seen 128-bit versions of that card
[17:07:02] wagnerrp: are you sure its not a GT210?
[17:07:06] hotwings: wait, i have that backwards.. those clock speeds are for the 128bit vresion
[17:07:34] hotwings: the box says gt220 (which iirc is a gt218 chip or whatever)
[17:07:55] wagnerrp: the gt218 core was a GT210
[17:08:03] wagnerrp: the 220 was a gt216 core
[17:08:24] wagnerrp: and ~3x more powerful
[17:08:58] hotwings: so idrc then :)
[17:09:44] wagnerrp: run 'lspci | grep -i nvidia'
[17:10:32] hotwings: already did, its gt216 core.. but anyways, just trying to figure out what the lowest end card is that has no problem doing 1080i 60fps using temporal spatial
[17:11:17] lotia is now known as lotia-away
[17:11:47] wagnerrp: any 220 should do it, ive not heard of a case where it hasnt
[17:12:19] wagnerrp: what specifically is it doing?
[17:12:39] wagnerrp: any possibility you're trying to do 2x, but not configured in a manner that supports 2x?
[17:12:47] hotwings: what about minimum core clock, memory clock, and shader core counts?
[17:13:06] hotwings: looks like the sweet spot might actually be gt430 fermi cards
[17:15:17] wagnerrp: supposedly the geometry/pixel cores are important
[17:15:36] wagnerrp: the 22 and 430 can do it, but the 520 apparently struggles
[17:16:08] wagnerrp: even though it should be fairly comparable to the 220
[17:16:39] wagnerrp: grab a copy of qvdpautest and run it on both cards
[17:17:36] wagnerrp: it may not be terribly accurate compared to mythtv's needs, but it will at least give a comparative value between the two
[17:20:03] hotwings: how about this one.. how much pcie lanes do you need for that? would putting a 16x card in a 16x slot (@ 1x speed) be ok?
[17:20:59] wagnerrp: absolutely
[17:21:07] wagnerrp: you can do VDPAU just fine over PCI
[17:21:59] wagnerrp: of course that doesn't work so well for any content VDPAU can't handle (the PCI bus can't push 1080p60)
[17:23:03] hotwings: ok, that was a big question for me.. one of my spare mainboards is a d525 atom board with no video chipset.. it goes have a 16x slot but only at 1x speed so sounds like i can use that board, which is what i want to do for low power consumption
[17:23:29] wagnerrp: as a dedicated frontend?
[17:23:35] hotwings: yeah
[17:23:49] hotwings: well, both i guess
[17:24:02] hotwings: back/front
[17:24:26] wagnerrp: aside from already having the hardware, it's really not much lower power consumption than a decent i3
[17:24:45] hotwings: its the already having the hardware part that i care about :)
[17:24:57] wagnerrp: and i would NOT recommend that as a backend
[17:25:52] wagnerrp: as far as dedicated frontends are concerned, duty cycle rules
[17:26:10] wagnerrp: 2–3x the wattage doesn't add up to much when the thing is only on a couple hours a day
[17:26:37] hotwings: its on 24/7 here
[17:26:56] wagnerrp: a backend, yes... a frontend, no reason to leave it on when not in use

[20:27:39] wagnerrp: uhci/ohci are USB 1.1, ehci is USB 2.0
[20:28:05] ToHellWithGA: both have "ehci_hcd: USB 2.0 'Enhanced' Host Controller (EHCI) Driver"
[20:28:38] ToHellWithGA: is there anything especially bad about using the pentium 4 machine for this purpose? of the two it has the largest hard drive
[20:28:39] wagnerrp: note, if you use the PS3 over UPNP, you will only be able to access pre-recorded content
[20:29:00] ToHellWithGA: i wasn't really looking for live streaming
[20:29:01] wagnerrp: and you will not have access to anything like commercial detection
[20:29:14] wagnerrp: also note, digital recordings are _big_
[20:29:14] baggy (baggy!~baggy@baggywrinkle.demon.co.uk) has joined #mythtv-users
[20:29:27] wagnerrp: on the order of 5–7GB/hr
[20:29:41] wagnerrp: you're going to want a large amount of storage
[20:29:56] ToHellWithGA: i take it that means commercial detection is handled by the frontend?
[20:29:59] wagnerrp: and you want that recording storage to be somewhere other than the drive that holds your MySQL database
[20:30:16] ToHellWithGA: separate partition or separate drive?
[20:30:27] wagnerrp: commercial detection is precomputed by `mythcommflag`, on any machine running an instance of the jobqueue
[20:30:35] aormond (aormond!~aormond@108-208-64-41.lightspeed.livnmi.sbcglobal.net) has quit (Quit: aormond)
[20:30:42] wagnerrp: the frontend can read the results of the commercial detection run, and apply them with its internal player
[20:31:00] wagnerrp: there is no mechanism to inform external utilities of the commercial detection results over UPNP
[20:31:11] ToHellWithGA: it sounds like PS3/UPNP is a pretty barebones thing
[20:31:13] wagnerrp: separate drive, partition makes no difference
[20:31:16] ToHellWithGA: maybe not the best way to play back
[20:31:28] wagnerrp: the issue is random access
[20:31:58] wagnerrp: rotating hard drives don't have much in general, but low speed laptop hard drives are particularly bad
[20:32:18] ToHellWithGA: these are old computers so i'm sure their drives are slow
[20:32:38] wagnerrp: not any slower than modern stuff
[20:32:55] wagnerrp: random access is dictated by RPM, which hasn't changed
[20:32:57] ToHellWithGA: i think my newer drives are 7200 rpm
[20:33:20] ToHellWithGA: iirc my old ones were in the 4- or 5–000 range
[20:33:38] wagnerrp: most laptop drives are 5400RPM, with some really old ones running 4200RPM
[20:34:23] ToHellWithGA: would a 64GB flash thumbdrive be suitable for this use?
[20:34:35] wagnerrp: absolutely not
[20:34:52] wagnerrp: an SSD would be fine, but a thumb drive is not designed for frequent writes
[20:34:52] ToHellWithGA: how about for the database?
[20:35:23] tlhiv_laptop (tlhiv_laptop!~foo@c-69-254-218-89.hsd1.al.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[20:35:47] wagnerrp: SSDs come with wear leveling algorithms in their firmware to work around the limited cycle life of MLC NAND flash, thumb drives do not
[20:35:58] ToHellWithGA: maybe i'm trying too hard to not buy anything new besides the tuner
[20:36:17] ToHellWithGA: so i need to get a tuner and an external hard drive to proceed, more or less
[20:36:22] wagnerrp: all this old hardware, do you not have an old PC lying about as a server?
[20:36:59] ToHellWithGA: i put my slightly older pentium 4 desktop in the dumpster after its power supply failed

[20:37:06] ToHellWithGA: all that remains of it is the hard drive
[20:39:41] ToHellWithGA: my shopping list has: tuner, kernel, and hdd
[20:40:01] wagnerrp: should make for a good start
[20:40:06] ToHellWithGA: thanks wagnerrp

[20:40:18] wagnerrp: the demands on a machine with only a couple broadcast channels are not much

[20:48:26] [R]: because you broke the debian magicness
[20:50:20] louis_: [R]: I run Debian stable with Mythtv from Deb multimedia backports to match the version on my frontend runnig Mythbuntu with 0.25.
[20:50:29] [R]: ok
[20:50:30] [R]: and?
[20:50:43] clever: louis_: it expects to find the root mysql pw in some config file, to automate something
[20:51:01] clever: if youve changed that, you would have broken everything
[20:55:43] louis_: clever: I don't remember changing that myself. I haven't used that machine for mythtv or mysql related so recreating the db wouldn't hurt me as long as I can get a working backend.
[20:56:26] clever: louis_: there should be a config file somewhere in /etc with the mysql name/pw, id look for that first
[20:56:46] louis_: clever: thx. I'll look.

Both record to the end of the show, so I get the full show and everything – but usually only one of them started on time. I'm don't think it's simulcasts, since they are both recording from the exact same channel. I have an
