[00:35:42] qwebirc26375: LiveTv question on myth 0.24....it seems to fail with a reference to an old capture card I used to have...how do I remove the reference
[00:37:00] qwebirc26375: I'm pretty sure I did a "remove all capture devices" in mythtv-setup when I installed my new card but mythweb shows them as 6 and 7
[00:37:27] kormoc: qwebirc26375, that's fine. Don't worry bout the id numbers
[00:37:34] Sharky112065: qwebirc26375: I never used 0.24, but I believe in 0.25 you have to delete it in mythtv-setup, so might be the same
[00:37:50] Sharky112065: oh nvm
[00:38:42] qwebirc26375: it is deleted in mythtv-setup...at least it doesn't show up in the list
[00:39:11] Sharky112065: check the database to see if it still has an entry for it.
[00:39:28] Sharky112065: I do not know sql, so I use myphpadmin
[00:40:06] kormoc: if it's not listed in myth web or mythtv-setup, it's not in the database
[00:40:24] qwebirc26375: that's what I thought
[00:41:05] qwebirc26375: I had created a symlink called /dev/pvr150 and it still shows up in the backend log when I try to start livetv
[00:43:10] Sharky112065: Memorex636: where are you stuck at on the ceton? I just configured two cards
[00:43:53] qwebirc26375: I get these "Failed to open /dev/pvr150: No such file or directory" all over the place which is correct...just don't know why the backend is trying that
[00:45:24] Sharky112065: qwebirc26375: do you have scheduled recordings for it that specify that specific tuner?
[00:46:02] Sharky112065: qwebirc26375: if it is indeed not in the database, that is all I can think of.
[00:46:07] qwebirc26375: I didn't check that....I hope not
[00:47:30] wagnerrp: qwebirc26375: remove all? or remove all on host?
[00:48:13] qwebirc26375: I thought I'd done both just to make sure but now I'm questioning
[00:48:29] qwebirc26375: Will one of them reset my tuner numbers back to 1 and 2?
[00:48:49] wagnerrp: removing all resets the count
[00:48:56] wagnerrp: removing all on a host, just removes those on a host
[00:49:09] wagnerrp: but as kormoc mentioned, its just some internal ID number, and not really relevant
[00:49:22] wagnerrp: mythtv will only use those that are currently accessible, and on a host connected to the cluster
[00:49:24] qwebirc26375: well...that explains the 6 and 7 then
[00:49:59] qwebirc26375: not sure what else to check then
[00:50:23] qwebirc26375: is it worth digging into the database?
[00:50:45] wagnerrp: pastebin your backend logs

[01:00:01] Sharky112065: Memorex636: can you bring them up with a web page?
[01:00:01] wagnerrp: failed to open /dev/pvr150
[01:00:29] Sharky112065: Memorex636: oh you said that
[01:00:56] qwebirc26375: yup...it's not there because I removed the card and it's gone from mythtv-setup
[01:01:26] Memorex636: yea i got them up
[01:01:40] Sharky112065: Memorex636: are you putting in the ip address on mythtv-setup that you did in the web browser?
[01:02:04] Memorex636: yea 192.168.200.1
[01:02:12] Sharky112065: Memorex636: and added the tuners as 0,0; 0,1; 0,2 and 0,3?
[01:02:25] Memorex636: yes sir
[01:03:31] Sharky112065: Did you add the channels? not by a scan (the left option – use the one on the right that just gets the channels from schedules direct)?
[01:04:00] Sharky112065: Memorex636: and then run mythfilldatabase?
[01:04:30] Memorex636: so fetch channels from listings source?
[01:04:41] Sharky112065: Memorex63: yep
[01:06:03] Sharky112065: Memorex636: then mythfilldatabase --dd-grab-all

[01:07:12] qwebirc26375: wagnerrp: so am I back to digging into the database?
[01:07:44] wagnerrp: it says the tuner doesnt exist, it cant open /dev/pvr150
[01:08:09] Sharky112065: Memorex636: do it for each configured tuner (set starting channel)
[01:08:52] qwebirc26375: why is it trying /dev/pvr150 when it's been removed?
[01:09:02] Memorex636: so I actual have to sign up for scheduals direct
[01:09:10] wagnerrp: did you restart the backend?
[01:09:14] Sharky112065: Memorex636: yes

[01:11:07] Sharky112065: Memorex636: I should have asked where you were. Schedules Direct I believe if in the US, not sure what the other one is if you are outside the US
[01:11:20] Sharky112065: Memorex636: do not scan for channels!
[01:11:23] wagnerrp: Memorex636: mythtv does not support scanning from cablecard tuners at this time
[01:11:27] qwebirc26375: yes the backend has been restarted....I made the change months ago....just now getting around to livetv
[01:11:41] Memorex636: kk
[01:11:48] Memorex636: so how do I change channels
[01:11:49] ** wagnerrp has to go afk for a while **
[01:11:56] qwebirc26375: recordings all work fine off both analog and digital sides of my hvr1600

[14:35:33] Hoochster: stupid question I know but thought I would ask, is there anyway to downgrade, or per say reinstall and go back down to 0.24 and transfer the recordings stuff from the database just like you would if you were transferring to a new system or are there way too many schema changes in the recordings stuff to do so?
[14:36:36] Hoochster: since there seems to be an issue with HDHomerun and Myth 0.25/Ubuntu 12.04, still haven't found exactly wihch piece is the problem but being as it is affecting live tv etc I am just wanting to go back to 0.24 for the time being
[14:36:59] tgm4883: Hoochster, strange
[14:36:59] Hoochster: but would prefer to keep the recordings and transfer the tables from the database as if I was transferring to a new system.
[14:37:52] tgm4883: Hoochster, what issues are you having?
[14:38:04] Hoochster: video breakups on live and recorded
[14:38:54] tgm4883: odd
[14:39:01] Hoochster: http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/10414
[14:39:03] tgm4883: I don't have one, just an HDHR prime which seems to work
[14:39:13] Hoochster: is one particular ticket I found with others with the same issues
[14:39:16] voyo: Hoochster: Im thinking the same, about downgrading to 0.24... to many not working or worrking differently things :-/
[14:39:30] Hoochster: I am running a prime and 2 regulars
[14:39:47] Hoochster: if you JUST upgraded to 0.25 then you can just restore the older database
[14:39:48] rhpot1991: Hoochster: I wonder if you are getting bit by the mysql second bug
[14:39:51] rhpot1991: leap second that is
[14:39:57] rhpot1991: sounds like what I saw for that
[14:39:58] Hoochster: but I have been running 0.25 for awhile now heh so too many recordings since heh
[14:40:16] voyo: me too, have some recordings, new rules etc..
[14:40:25] rhpot1991: check top and iotop, see if you can pinpoint what is eating your cpu
[14:40:27] Hoochster: rhpot1991, open to any suggestions just the more research I have found seems to be related to 0.25
[14:40:45] Hoochster: tgm4883, so you say you do run a prime on 0.25 and 12.04 and no issues?
[14:40:58] tgm4883: Hoochster, well to be fair, I only got the prime last night
[14:41:01] Hoochster: heh
[14:41:02] tgm4883: but no issues so far it seems
[14:41:09] Hoochster: gratz on the prime you will love it
[14:41:14] tgm4883: I already do
[14:41:23] rhpot1991: I don't see that, running a prime and hdhr with mutlirec enabled
[14:41:31] Hoochster: so live tv you aren't getting choppy video every so often
[14:41:32] rhpot1991: on mythbuntu 12.04, with 0.25 fixes
[14:41:47] tgm4883: I've retired my HDPVR, and think I'll retire my DVB cards as well
[14:41:51] Hoochster: multirec? prime can't do but 1 recording per tuner
[14:41:54] rhpot1991: I disabled quick tuning for my hdhr
[14:41:55] voyo: btw is someone using vaapi ? especially with ATI card ? It was supposed to work ok with 0.25 , but I can't make it work correctly... want to talk with someone who is using it (or tried...)
[14:41:59] rhpot1991: multirec on regular hdhr
[14:42:08] Hoochster: k
[14:42:21] rhpot1991: so I've done > 4 recordings at a time without issue
[14:42:25] tgm4883: Hoochster, nope. The only time I saw choppiness with my prime is when I was testing with the HDHR utility and VLC
[14:42:37] Hoochster: haven't tried turning off quick tuning recommendation I thought was to have that on
[14:42:40] wagnerrp: i dont think VAAPI was ever proported to work well with ATI cards on 0.25
[14:42:49] rhpot1991: Hoochster: suppose it could be a network bottleneck too, but the high cpu usage says its most likely othewise
[14:42:50] tgm4883: once I got it into mythtv, I didn't have any choppiness on it
[14:42:58] Hoochster: checked network and all seems fine
[14:43:10] rhpot1991: Hoochster: investigate what is eating that cpu, if its just commflagging then thats ok, if its something else figure out what
[14:43:15] tgm4883: and it was only a few channels I had that issue on (ESPN, ESPN2), so I tested those after getting it into mythtv
[14:43:16] Hoochster: will give the quick tuning toggle a try and see if it makes a difference
[14:43:23] Hoochster: cpu is fine
[14:43:32] tgm4883: Hoochster, also, make sure you are up to date on 0.25
[14:43:34] Hoochster: using vdpau
[14:43:44] Hoochster: update daily, so I am running build from today actually
[14:43:47] Hoochster: mind you packaged build
[14:43:49] tgm4883: good
[14:43:49] Hoochster: not compiled
[14:43:57] tgm4883: that's what I recommend :)
[14:44:05] Hoochster: cpu doesn't ever hit over 1–2% that I have noticed so not a cpu thing
[14:44:22] Hoochster: been doing myth for along time heh not that I claim by any means to know anything about troubleshooting heh it just works! :)
[14:44:28] Hoochster: but ya I try and update often
[14:44:32] voyo: wagnerrp: it works correctly (more/less) with XBMC , in same environment.
[14:44:35] rhpot1991: that bug says about cpu which is why I mentioned it
[14:45:03] wagnerrp: xbmc does things significantly differently than mythtv
[14:45:05] Hoochster: ya some users had cpu spikes but that was while they were troubleshooting and don't think they were doing vdpau
[14:45:10] Hoochster: but have tried turning that off and issues still there
[14:45:12] wagnerrp: mythtv tries to use VAAPI to play the content
[14:45:19] wagnerrp: xbmc merely uses VAAPI to decode the content
[14:45:30] wagnerrp: after which it pulls it back into the CPU, and pushes it back out over opengl

[14:45:49] Hoochster: just from what I gathered lots have the issue so that's why I inquired bout downgrading
[14:45:52] wagnerrp: on xbmc, all output is performed using opengl
[14:46:24] voyo: wagnerrp: maybe mythtv should do the same ? better this way than nothing ? (then no HD support at all)
[14:46:36] wagnerrp: what CPU?
[14:47:36] tgm4883: voyo, maybe VAAPI should work?
[14:47:42] voyo: wagnerrp: yeah, thats probably the problem – I make it work *partialy* (mythtv) after I changed in setup options to use opengl instead QT to draw gui
[14:47:54] wagnerrp: yeah, ill go with tgm on that one
[14:48:28] Hoochster: doh quick tuning was already off heh thought I had that on nm that
[14:48:36] wagnerrp: voyo: what CPU?
[14:49:08] voyo: wagnerrp: XP 4850, its *almost* ok to run 1080p, but with ~100% CPU time, I can't use this frontend to anything else when viewing HD contenet. moreover – its slugish then, and even remotecontrol almost not works (lirc)
[14:49:42] wagnerrp: erm... that not a real processor
[14:50:00] wagnerrp: Athlon XP only went up to 3200 or so
[14:50:34] voyo: wagnerrp: I bought nvidia card, with this Im able to run it even set to only 1000Mhz (ondemand cpu scheduler).
[14:50:44] wagnerrp: as for an Athlon 64, the 2.5GHz 4850 should be plenty for anything MPEG2 you might have
[14:50:55] wagnerrp: what type of content is this?
[14:51:34] voyo: wagnerrp: 2500Mhz Athlon , 4850 X2 4850e
[14:52:11] tgm4883: wagnerrp, would CPU decoding video content fall under the "Better on 64-bits"TM
[14:52:35] tgm4883: or would decoding not be included in number crunching activities

[14:52:47] voyo: wagnerrp: doesnt matter, it is able to play 1080i , some 1080p, but with ALL cpu power. its not satisfying me, especially if I have hardware which is *able* to support HD content.
[14:52:49] tgm4883: wagnerrp, I'd agree with that :)
[14:53:22] tgm4883: I love it when someone asks a question and the response is "it doesn't matter because I say it doesn't matter"
[14:53:27] wagnerrp: AIUI, video decoding is largely floating point, which has always been 80-bit
[14:53:45] tgm4883: wagnerrp, so we need bigger processors then
[14:53:57] wagnerrp: the only advantage from 64-bit would be more and bigger data registers available
[14:54:04] wagnerrp: which will give some boost, but not all that much
[14:54:07] tgm4883: I'm just going to stack a bunch of NES's on top of each other until I get 80bits

[15:17:30] voyo: I realy liked mythtv, but I have impression its going worse overtime. Features I liked – are removed, things I want to use etc etc etc...
[15:18:20] wagnerrp: speaking of which, ive got a bunch of crap i need to get in before sunday
[15:18:41] tgm4883: voyo, and I think it's getting better. Perhaps i'm just doing it wrong since I haven't been using MythTV since "0.18"
[15:18:52] tgm4883: wagnerrp, before sunday?
[15:18:59] voyo: tgm4883: I bought this hardware few years ago. I wanted to have cheap and all-in-one hardware. and not draining lots of power too. (electricy bills).
[15:19:02] tgm4883: is there going to be a 0.26 release soon?
[15:19:28] wagnerrp: http://www.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-dev/2012-July/072723.html
[15:19:38] tgm4883: voyo, well there is the problem. As I believe wagnerrp always says, MythTV is a hobby, and hobbies aren't cheap
[15:20:20] wagnerrp: you can build a box, and let it sit there working fine for years by not touching it
[15:20:31] wagnerrp: but its so so hard not to touch that box
[15:20:40] wagnerrp: it must be tinkered with
[15:20:41] voyo: wagnerrp: btw anychance to have properly working MUXes on dvb-s , I mean record/watch live more than one show on same adapter/mux ?
[15:21:00] wagnerrp: ive not heard anyone having problems with multirec on dvb-s
[15:21:07] wagnerrp: but then ive not really paid attention to dvb-s
[15:21:13] wagnerrp: not much use on this side of the pond
[15:21:29] tgm4883: wagnerrp, interesting. That might make 12.10
[15:21:32] voyo: tgm4883: exatcly, thats a hobby. why you are denying me to have it working MY way ? with my hardware , fulfiling ***MY*** needs ?
[15:21:49] tgm4883: voyo, well since you put it that way. Patches accepted
[15:22:25] tgm4883: voyo, or do you just want to impose your needs on what features other people need to code for you
[15:22:38] voyo: ty. appreciate.
[15:23:12] voyo: pffff Im not asking anyone to code anything ! I only asked about features I read about, which were supposed to work ! jesuss man....
[15:23:45] wagnerrp: vaapi is still listed as an experimental feature, and there have been long standing warnings against ATI graphics
[15:23:51] wagnerrp: as for livetv... well, it should work
[15:23:59] tgm4883: voyo, correct. And when we told you it isn't working right, you complained to the wrong people
[15:24:02] wagnerrp: but it just doesnt get a whole lot of testing use among the developer base
[15:24:18] wagnerrp: and something that doesnt get used often is likely to break more often as things it uses change around it
[15:24:42] voyo: wagnerrp: ok thank you. thats something useful.
[15:24:47] tgm4883: "but VAAPI works in this completely unrelated piece of software that half-asses it in a completely different way
[15:24:55] tgm4883: "
[15:25:21] wagnerrp: its not that it "half-asses" it, it was a design choice unrelated to VAAPI, that could have happened to be beneficial to VAAPI
[15:25:40] wagnerrp: or, they could just have someone more interested in making it work, and so has spent a lot more time working out the bugs and nuances
[15:25:52] wagnerrp: several years ago, xbmc went opengl for everything
[15:26:08] wagnerrp: all UI, all video, everything gets run through a shared opengl renderer for simplicity
[15:26:21] voyo: wagnerrp: do you know about plans regarding it (continue to develop, or rather remove – since no1 is using it ?) , who is coding this btw ?
[15:26:46] ** tgm4883 votes to remove it **
[15:26:54] wagnerrp: the only person that really worked heavily on vaapi was markk, who is no longer with the project
[15:27:16] ** tgm4883 leaves to return his cable box to Comcast **
[15:27:40] wagnerrp: and as it is, mark had a long standing distaste for ATI because the hardware/drivers never worked like they were supposed to to the API
[15:27:47] voyo: wagnerrp: IMHO that was good way. (regarding xbmc) allows to play contenet not only using x11 ...
[15:28:05] wagnerrp: eh?
[15:28:38] voyo: to use opengl for everything
[15:28:52] wagnerrp: the reason to do it was to make it easier to code, since there was only one code path
[15:29:09] wagnerrp: and to allow a more complex and more dynamic api, since you were always going to have opengl for fancy rendering
[15:29:16] wagnerrp: but its still running through x11
[15:29:19] wagnerrp: as everything uses x11
[15:29:52] wagnerrp: opengl is merely implemented as an extension to the x11 protocol, especially now that AIGLX allows opengl to be routed through standard X11 communications
[15:30:02] voyo: no, xbmc does not need x11 to play. crystal, fb, etc which I dont know.
[15:30:22] wagnerrp: the implication of forcing opengl is that it effectively dropped support for any old hardware
[15:30:39] voyo: hm, yup..
[15:30:53] wagnerrp: older stuff doesnt have the umph to handle the UI, and it definitely doesnt have the umph to handle the video rendering
[15:31:01] wagnerrp: the crystalHD cards are not graphics cards
[15:31:10] wagnerrp: they do not have graphics outputs, they are only a decoder
[15:31:27] wagnerrp: meaning both in xbmc and mythtv, it functions as a drop-in replcement for the 'standard' ffmpeg decoder libraries
[15:31:40] wagnerrp: in both cases, it gets rendered and output using opengl
[15:32:06] wagnerrp: neither systems support framebuffer graphics any longer
[15:32:10] voyo: but ie. xbmc can run on lets say – raspberryPI, without running x11, right ?
[15:32:12] wagnerrp: they both require opengl, or opengles
[15:32:34] wagnerrp: xbmc makes a special allowance for certain devices, such as the ATV and RPI
[15:32:34] voyo: (but Im not sure what its using , fb probably ?)
[15:32:40] wagnerrp: where the UI is rendered using opengles
[15:33:03] wagnerrp: but there is a special frame punched through the rendered UI, that it tells whatever video hardware the device has to render in that area
[15:35:50] voyo: you said "special allowance"  – what does mean ?
[15:36:06] wagnerrp: a separate code path for those specific devices
[15:36:16] voyo: ah ok
[15:36:20] wagnerrp: rather than the normal method of running everything through opengl
[15:36:27] voyo: I tought about signing some NDA..
[15:37:20] voyo: and what about openmax ?
[15:37:52] voyo: I think it would allow much easier apporach to hardware, should work on more devices etc.
[15:38:15] wagnerrp: support would be nice, but development hardware is a bit scarce to come by
[15:38:22] wagnerrp: a decent number of devices are using it these days
[15:38:34] wagnerrp: but that whole market is primarily closed systems
[15:38:46] voyo: hm..
[15:39:11] wagnerrp: the beagleboard and similar have always been fairly low volume, and very expensive for what it is
[15:39:28] voyo: yup. much too expensive.
[15:39:30] wagnerrp: while the RPI is really the first "mass market" device that i *think* supports openmax
[15:39:49] voyo: I'd like to see mythfrontend running some day on RPI ...
[15:40:11] wagnerrp: more important than openmax, there are some serious memory issues that need to be dealt with first
[15:40:26] wagnerrp: since youre looking at somewhere <200MB of usable memory
[15:40:34] voyo: you mean on RPI , or with mythtv at all ?
[15:41:02] voyo: yes, only 224Mb available to the system.. its not small amount.. just mythtv is too big :P
[15:41:04] wagnerrp: i think that in order to be able to handle video decoding, the graphics core needs to be allocated somewhere around 60MB for various buffering
[15:41:33] wagnerrp: and modern mythfrontend isnt even happy on the full 256MB
[15:41:42] voyo: erm 224Mb if you *disable* 3d and HD support.
[15:42:05] voyo: 128Mb only with full graphic support.
[15:42:10] wagnerrp: yikes
[15:42:16] EvilGuru: Does the RPI hardware do hardware deinterlacing?
[15:42:47] wagnerrp: on 0.24.0, with only 256MB of memory in my laptop, booted into gnome with nothing else running besides mythfrontend
[15:42:51] wagnerrp: i was already into swap
[15:42:58] voyo: hm dont know.. can;t check now, I sold mine device..
[15:43:07] wagnerrp: at 384MB, it was happy enough starting up
[15:43:21] wagnerrp: but i didnt use it any amount to see if active usage put it into swap
[15:43:25] EvilGuru: I do not know what has happened to memory usage over the past few years. Ubuntu used to be happy on 512
[15:43:44] voyo: Im using one frontend with 256mb, pure X, without wm.
[15:43:44] wagnerrp: memory is dirt cheap
[15:43:56] wagnerrp: so theres no reason to try to slim things down
[15:44:20] wagnerrp: better to keep things in memory so its available as needed
[15:44:22] wagnerrp: than flush it out
[15:44:52] voyo: memory is not expensive, but soem devices just can't have more. no more slots, no slots to expand at all.
[15:45:23] wagnerrp: yes, and those systems are more often than not, locked down
[15:45:34] ** voyo realy dislike the 'buy better hardware' as a cure cancer answer... **
[15:46:05] wagnerrp: why spend time worrying about hardware that you need to "jailbreak" before you can actually use it anyway
[15:46:20] voyo: yes, and such devices are great as cheap frontend-only solution. ie in bedrom or so..
[15:46:53] voyo: why jailbreak ? look on RPI... its open..
[15:47:07] wagnerrp: yes, and the RPI is a fairly modern thing
[15:47:13] EvilGuru: My current fe/be has 4GB. which I hope will be enough
[15:47:27] jwh: not quite "open" though, still has sekrits using binary blobs
[15:47:34] wagnerrp: depends on what youre running, 4GB of my MBE is not near enough
[15:47:42] voyo: there is huge world yet outside modular bloated modern x86 systems....
[15:48:02] jwh: how many people use mythfrontend vs ie xbmc?
[15:48:19] wagnerrp: likely heavily in favor of xbmc
[15:48:27] EvilGuru: wagnerrp: Is that just caches?
[15:48:34] jwh: yeah thought so
[15:48:52] wagnerrp: EvilGuru: more or less, ZFS eats up everything you have available
[15:49:00] wagnerrp: and then swaps stuff aggressively to eat more
[15:49:01] voyo: jwh: I tried, but I was not happy... seems its not easy to wrote application/plugin to *properly* talk to mythbackend..
[15:49:13] jwh: voyo: yeah it's broken at the mo, has been for a while
[15:49:29] jwh: unless you use older myth
[15:49:52] voyo: yup. and thats another reason to downgrade to 0.25...
[15:50:36] voyo: btw I made it running (xbmc mythtv plugin) with 0.25, but I was unable to switch to other livetv channel, than 1st previously choosen one.
[15:50:52] voyo: and even recordings was not ok too
[15:50:59] dmfrey (dmfrey!~dmfrey@webdefence.cluster-h.websense.net) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[15:51:04] jwh: I can't even get xbmc pvr client to talk to the backend
[15:51:16] jwh: haven't spent any time debugging it though
[15:51:38] dmfrey (dmfrey!~dmfrey@webdefence.cluster-h.websense.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[15:51:42] jwh: oh actually, it isn't in current builds thats why
[15:51:44] jwh: probably due to being broken
[15:52:04] jwh: annoying really as I'd quite like to use myth as the backend
[15:52:10] wagnerrp: probably because mythbackend refuses it access
[15:52:39] jwh: initially it was just a version mismatch, but then it seems in the latest build that they've disabled it entirely
[15:52:46] jwh: hopefully just until it's updated/fixed
[15:52:55] wagnerrp: historically, xbmc has always been a version mismatch
[15:52:58] jwh: yeah
[15:53:04] wagnerrp: it tells mythbackend it is 0.15 or something
[15:53:10] jwh: the cmyth lib uses ver 7
[15:53:17] wagnerrp: mythtv responds, i wont talk to you because im version whatever
[15:53:17] jwh: so that doesn't work with recent myth
[15:53:27] wagnerrp: and xbmc response back, oh, im actually that too
[15:53:32] jwh: heh
[15:53:38] jwh: cute
[15:53:39] wagnerrp: and mythtv responds, comee on in!
[15:53:41] voyo: jwh there is soemthing like 'token' , prevents older/different frontends to connect to backend
[15:53:48] wagnerrp: until 0.24
[15:54:06] wagnerrp: where xbmc has to response, oh, im actually that too, and here's my token to prove ive been updated to speak that version
[15:54:13] jwh: ah, thats probably why it has been disabled then
[15:54:55] wagnerrp: the token is visible in the source, its cataloged in the protocol documentation on the wiki, and the version never changes within a point release
[15:55:01] voyo: wagnerrp: reason to change token is *always* serious ?
[15:55:05] jwh: the other bit is having to run setup in vnc, it's rather slow :(
[15:55:16] jwh: headless box etc
[15:55:42] wagnerrp: it would not be difficult to just check the changes in the protocol, make sure nothing breaks, add the token to some lookup table, and push a commit
[15:55:51] jwh: someone mentioned that there was a web interface in the works? for config and such
[15:55:59] wagnerrp: but no one seems to care to do so
[15:56:04] wagnerrp: in the works, yes, but incomplete
[15:56:07] jwh: ah
[15:56:08] wagnerrp: but why are you using VNC?
[15:56:14] wagnerrp: that makes no sense
[15:56:21] jwh: headless box, so I can run setup
[15:56:31] EvilGuru: jwh: If you don't mind losing support phpmyadmin is the best web interface going ;)
[15:56:33] wagnerrp: but how does VNC factor into thisss?
[15:56:44] jwh: well it needs X, right
[15:56:44] voyo: hehe, Im using VNC quite often when I losse RC, or my wife have it ;)
[15:56:50] wagnerrp: uh uhu?
[15:57:01] wagnerrp: all you need is an X server
[15:57:06] voyo: vnc as RC only ;)
[15:57:06] wagnerrp: any X server, anywhere, will do
[15:57:22] jwh: well yeah, VNC just seemed easier than getting an X server working on win32
[15:57:32] wagnerrp: physical one, could be a virtual one, could be local, could be remote
[15:57:48] wagnerrp: install xming, run it, done

[16:01:06] wagnerrp: voyo: for something very very basic, probably wouldnt be all that hard
[16:01:17] wagnerrp: but the internal protocol is a mess to get through for stuff like livetv
[16:01:41] wagnerrp: for a fully fledged home theater frontend, seems like a lot of wasted effort
[16:01:46] jwh: display adapter on the machine doesn't have any sort of opengl extensions and not enough ram to be useful, so a remote X server would probably be a better solution

[18:07:21] wizbit: ive always fancied the idea of running freebsd + zfs
[18:07:47] kormoc: so run a nas
[18:07:56] wagnerrp: or use an HDHomeRun
[18:07:59] wizbit: well that another extra box i could do without
[18:08:07] wizbit: im in uk, we dont have hdhomerun
[18:08:12] wagnerrp: sure you do
[18:08:20] wizbit: i dont even know what it is
[18:08:39] wagnerrp: what what is?
[18:08:52] wizbit: im reading now
[18:09:04] wizbit: http://www.silicondust.com/
[18:09:18] wagnerrp: http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun/dvbt/
[18:09:39] wizbit: wow interesting
[18:10:08] wagnerrp: -T (and -C) only, no -S/S2/T2
[18:10:14] wizbit: ok
[18:10:16] jwh: wizbit: *BSD has no dvb infrastructure
[18:10:58] jwh: which means nothing that exists today will work
[18:11:11] wagnerrp: seem above linked webcamd
[18:11:14] wagnerrp: *see
[18:11:27] jwh: does anythign actually work with that though?
[18:11:41] wagnerrp: never used it
[18:12:07] wagnerrp: and wouldnt know how to get mythtv compiled with DVB support on freebsd in order to get it to use it
[18:12:08] jwh: hm, claims myth does
[18:12:25] wagnerrp: in theory, its just exposing the same exact DVB API as on linux
[18:12:27] jwh: not sure I'd want to use v4l rather than dvb interfaces though
[18:12:33] jwh: well webcamd is v4l
[18:12:37] wagnerrp: only though a software layer, rather than the kernel
[18:13:09] jwh: hm, may be worth looking at
[18:13:48] wagnerrp: only USB devices
[18:13:56] wagnerrp: so IMHO, not really worth looking at
[18:14:05] ** wagnerrp dislikes USB **
[18:14:26] jwh: how come?
[18:14:44] jwh: all of my tuners are USB
[18:14:47] wagnerrp: because everything USB is inherently software driven
[18:15:02] wagnerrp: i.e. slow
[18:15:04] jwh: no more so than PCI though
[18:15:12] wagnerrp: yes more so than PCI
[18:15:15] jwh: as long as you use UCHI (?)
[18:15:23] jwh: most of the hard work is done by the controller
[18:15:35] wagnerrp: its still polled by the CPU
[18:15:43] jwh: sure
[18:15:52] wagnerrp: rather than polled and buffered by dedicated hardware
[18:15:54] jwh: but the overhead is almost nothing really with a decent controller
[18:16:22] wagnerrp: ive just had too many very poor experiences with USB hard drives over the years
[18:16:26] jwh: I don't see much difference between the PCI card I have and the USB tuners
[18:16:38] jwh: yeah slightly different ball game :P
[18:16:41] wagnerrp: ive given up on USB for anything but low speed peripherals

[18:17:19] jwh: hm, webcamd has definitely improved since I last looked at it
[18:17:38] jwh: but being userland, it won't scale for busy installs
[18:17:45] wagnerrp: true
[18:18:28] jwh: I try and pick cards without pid filters so I can watch everything on the transponder simultaneously, so we're talking upto 90meg per card
[18:18:39] jwh: going to suck if it's being passed between userland
[18:22:53] wagnerrp: 90/card? i would think half that
[18:23:04] jwh: well, thats the theoretical maximum
[18:23:16] jwh: obviously nobody actually uses that much (yet)
[18:23:16] wagnerrp: for a single channel?
[18:23:57] wagnerrp: QAM cable is only 38mbps, i didnt think anything satellite was more than the 40s
[18:24:00] jwh: well, per transponder yeah
[18:24:19] jwh: there are some ~50 transponders, but they could bump that
[18:24:48] jwh: especially since s2 allows for something ridiculous like 300 meg

[22:18:00] Memorex636: you around sharky?
[22:23:21] lapion: hmm why not let the backend delay restarting while upgrading it until current recording/live-playback is busy, all the while giving a warning on the frontend that a restart is imminent, and asking whether to allow or wait ?
[22:23:46] wagnerrp: huh?

[22:25:45] wagnerrp: yes
[22:26:21] wagnerrp: mythtv does not automatically update, for it to have to wait until frontends are idle to do so
[22:27:40] kmcorbett (kmcorbett!~kmcorbett@173-166-21-1-newengland.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) has quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[22:28:22] lapion: Yes I know that, I meant for manual upgrades.updates so I do not have to wait but the backend will gracefully exit once it is idle.
[22:28:43] wagnerrp: you want the backend to be able to tell the frontends to terminate?
[22:28:59] mzb_ is now known as mzb
[22:32:05] lapion: well the backend request the frontend as to whether it may restart, as 2 way request..
[22:33:23] tgm4883: wagnerrp, he wants mythbackend to prevent the OS from stopping the service it sounds like
[22:33:51] lapion: or at the very least delay.

[22:34:19] wagnerrp: but now youre asking the backend to involve itself in the startup duties of one specific distro
[22:34:45] tgm4883: wagnerrp, hmm, if we could send a command to the backend that says "at the end of the next recording, (providing another doesn't start immediatly after), die
[22:35:00] tgm4883: wagnerrp, I think that would resolve that issue ^
[22:35:39] tgm4883: I don't know if that would bring in more issues than it fixes though
[22:36:12] ertyu-m: interesting and potentially useful idea, but probably best done manually so you can make sure it comes back up properly
[22:36:35] tgm4883: ertyu-m, I'll agree with that

[22:39:02] lapion: well at the very least the backend should warn any frontends using it that it is shutting down, so they either stop playback and exit, or stop pause playback, and continue on the same channel with just a few sec of lost video
[22:39:26] tgm4883: lapion, well ideally, you shouldn't upgrade while recording
[22:40:09] lapion: well yeah when working on a backend you cannot know if anyone elsewhere on the network is using it.
[22:40:53] tgm4883: lapion, well that isn't 100% true, you could review the backend logs
[22:40:55] hadees (hadees!~hadees@72-48-211-16.dyn.grandenetworks.net) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[22:41:06] tgm4883: IIRC, you can also query the frontends using the new API
[22:41:35] tgm4883: Lastly, how big is your installation that you can't tell if the frontends are using the backend?
[22:42:34] k-man: after upgrading debian, i'm getting no audio when i watch a recording. frontend output here: http://pastie.org/4252546
[22:42:48] k-man: ALSA: snd_pcm_open("default"): Connection refused
[22:43:31] lapion: k-man, are you certain you have pulseaudio running ?
[22:43:49] k-man: trying not to use pulseaudio
[22:43:58] k-man: i used to use it but don't want to any more
[22:44:58] lapion: then k-man you have manually select the audio output device.
[22:45:13] k-man: ah, ok, thanks
[22:45:14] lapion: best thing is to use the wizard
[22:45:19] k-man: thats fixed it i think
[22:45:28] k-man: yeah, just went in and selected something other than alsa:default
[22:45:51] k-man: thanks lapion
[22:47:53] lapion: I have 3 input devices, each with a different chipset, and during reboot the devices change according to the sequence they have been started up.
[22:48:26] k-man: lapion, i think udev rules is the solution to that
[22:48:31] lapion: and I either have to restart until they are in the right sequence , or I have to manually switch the input device names
[22:49:00] ertyu-m: they get enumerated in a different order at every boot?
[22:49:10] lapion: I have a rule and it doesn't help
[22:49:28] lapion: not everytime, sometimes.
[22:49:35] tgm4883: lapion, then your rule is wrong
[22:49:40] k-man: lapion, sorry, i'm not expert in the rules, but i think it probably means your rule is wrong
[22:49:45] ertyu-m: man, who programs this stuff, that's just plain bad

[22:50:38] lapion: but one creeps in betweem them, sometimes being first sometimes being second and sometimes being last
[22:52:13] k-man: any ideas how i can diagnose why playing a recording often takes 15–30 seconds to start?
[22:53:04] k-man: hmm... maybe 2gb of ram is the problem
[22:53:14] k-man: *sigh* i need to upgrade this machine
[22:53:28] wagnerrp: more likely the database than lack of ram
[22:53:41] wagnerrp: is the database on the same drive as your recordings?
[22:54:01] k-man: yes
[22:54:16] wagnerrp: any possibility you can make that not so?
[22:54:40] k-man: i need to check
[22:54:47] k-man: can't remeber the layout of my drives
[22:54:48] lapion: I was thinking that this could be best handled by the backend, in stead of relating the devices to their device number only, relating them to their name as well.
[22:55:35] lapion: those are all just musings. and are not vital.
[22:56:13] wagnerrp: there have been plans for some time to identify digital tuners by their MAC address
[22:56:21] wagnerrp: but there is no such thing for analog capture devices
[22:56:43] lapion: However the transcoder cannot seem to handle any large nuv recordings with multiple cuts. even worse while transcoding it grows to an inordinate size.
[22:57:34] lapion: I have 3 analog cards with 2 different chipsets.
[22:58:21] lapion: while transcoding files the transcoder grows large.
