[02:31:34] | [R]: | nope |
[02:33:36] | linuxtech: | I think I have a filesystem issue, but logs are not showing it... Since the Derecho storm blew through things have been getting worse. I start the backend and seems to do fine for a couple hours and then it just hangs, the usual service mythtv-backend doesn't seem to kill it completly either. |
[02:35:33] | linuxtech: | I can try a manual fsck, I have already tried the force on boot up, but I have seen a problem like this on a frontend machine that had a power failure and reformatting the drive was the only thing that worked. |
[02:36:25] | linuxtech: | It sucks to reinstall the backend, no CD or monitor on the machine, hours of work to prepare... |
[02:36:59] | Sharky112065: | My backend is hanging as well |
[02:38:44] | linuxtech: | The only thing I have seen on the backend logs is something about the preview image generation, other than that no errors I have noticed. On a frontend I am getting a protocol error, but that is because the backend only is partially responding... |

[03:07:13] | linuxtech: | I found a harddrive I can use to boot it via usb, now I need to get that ready and look for a monitor, all that just to manaully fsck it, and if that doesn't work reinstall... |
[03:07:56] | linuxtech: | Did you have power issues from that Derecho storm? |
[03:08:22] | Sharky112065: | no, Im in seattle |
[03:09:25] | Sharky112065: | I have to kill -9 the pid of mythbackend just to stop it. normal kill does not work |
[03:09:54] | linuxtech: | Ou rpower flickered a number of times, and the backend is on a UPS, but these cheap UPS's just could deal with the on, off, on, off... of the storm. I am in Lancaster VA, we didn't lose power except those little on off things, but a few million people in VA lost power. |
[03:12:19] | Sharky112065: | I have no ups, but if I loose poewer my Adaptec Hardware raid card has a vmm moudule so I will have no data loss. |

[14:50:48] | wizbit: | slackware |
[14:51:03] | wizbit: | -v general --logpath /var/log/mythfrontend.log <--- will general log most errors etc |
[14:51:05] | sphery: | ok, so you'll probably have to decide how to do logging--either file logging or syslog logging |
[14:51:14] | wizbit: | yep i can do that |
[14:51:23] | sphery: | read teh linked page, though, to figure out how to use each (as your --logpath is broken) |

[15:40:15] | Sharky112065: | there are two places to set it, one shows it in seconds, and one in minutes, which one should be used? |
[15:41:02] | sphery: | the one using minutes--i.e. the one in the recording rule |
[15:41:06] | Sharky112065: | I cant get into the front end right now to look at the wording |
[15:41:17] | Sharky112065: | ok ill change it then |
[15:41:46] | sphery: | the global setting in Utilities/Setup is meant to allow you to start a capture card early, when it takes your system a few seconds to load firmware or whatever |
[15:42:13] | Sharky112065: | sphery: have any of the developers tested 0.25 with 7 or more tuners recording HD at the same time? I'm thinking yes, but need to ask. |
[15:42:16] | sphery: | so it's only used at card start up |
[15:42:25] | sphery: | I'm guessing some have |
[15:42:47] | sphery: | I'll also guarantee that if there's a problem it's due to system configuration/resource issues |
[15:43:06] | sphery: | and it may be that those issues are triggered earlier with mythtv and its write patterns than on, for example, WinMCE |
[15:43:13] | Sharky112065: | 32GB RAM, 8 Core CPU, and HW raid should be more than enough to handle it. So something is awry in the code |
[15:43:34] | sphery: | I can tell you my system has no problems whatsoever with 6 concurrent recordings |
[15:43:39] | sphery: | but it does it to 6 different file systems |
[15:43:47] | sphery: | on 6 different drives |
[15:44:09] | sphery: | single file system on raid would actually be detrimental because it would be constantly seeking |

[15:45:45] | wizbit: | the sound quality sounds different, more high pitched |
[15:46:10] | jmusits: | contents from strace, this nearly pegs both cores on the frontend machine |
[15:46:36] | sphery: | with 8 multi-gb files being written at the same time, there's a lot of seeking around as it writes various parts to the various blocks allocated for the various recordings |
[15:47:40] | sphery: | and because there's no way to know how much space to pre-allocate (and no standard/portable way to pre-allocate large amounts of space for a single file that's written over an hour or so of time), multiple recordings to a single file system get very fragmented |
[15:47:54] | wizbit: | mythtv is suddenly working |
[15:47:55] | wizbit: | how strange |
[15:47:57] | sphery: | which causes even more seeking |

[15:49:29] | Sharky112065: | OK, here is what I will do, I will cut it down to 4 recording and record multiple times. If it fails It is not hardware. If it cant handle 4 recordings then something has to be wrong with the code |

Often when I try to tune into a channel not carrying live TV (e.g. encrypted, off air or just MHEG), I get the error "error opening jump program file" (0.25-fixes branch). This seems to be quite a nasty crash and the error window doesn't respond to keypresses. I know I probably shouldn't tune directly into these anyway, but should it error in such a bad/crashy way? |
[16:01:49] | sphery: | wizbit: for the most part "converting" to the new engine, the only thing that's reusable from an old theme is the actual position of things--everything else needs rewriting (meaning it's probably easier to write a new theme from scratch than to convert an old one--and you'll probably get a better theme that way, too, since it will be designed for/able to take advantage of the capabilities of the new theme engine) |
