[03:34:49] sphery: wagnerrp: hehe, as big as a compact or full size?
[03:35:01] sphery: is this from a show?
[03:35:37] wagnerrp: "car size"
[03:35:48] [R]: lol
[03:36:03] wagnerrp: ive got a box of dead and old electronics ive been meaning to take to some recycling place for about two years now
[03:36:26] wagnerrp: and lo, an email from my high school saying they're going an electronics recycling drive on tuesday, 2–5:30
[03:36:50] wagnerrp: under items that will be accepted — "Batteries (small to car size)"
[03:37:03] sphery: hehe
[03:37:12] [R]: ROFL
[03:37:16] sphery: that should cover most all of them
[03:37:27] [R]: wagnerrp: a battery the size of a battery for a car, not a battery the size of a car...
[03:37:35] wagnerrp: thats not what it says
[03:37:47] [R]: lol
[03:37:51] sphery: and it's a school, so, obviously, they wouldn't use the wrong words
[03:38:04] wagnerrp: you say a watch battery, not a watch-sized battery
[03:38:08] [R]: LOL
[03:38:10] sphery: I mean they teach people how to use words
[03:38:18] wagnerrp: you say a calculator battery, not a calculator-sized battery
[03:38:22] wagnerrp: its the same thing here
[03:38:28] wagnerrp: its a car battery
[03:38:49] wagnerrp: a car-sized battery is a several ton slab of lead, filled with acid, they you have to haul in on a flatbet
[03:38:52] wagnerrp: flatbed
[03:39:03] wagnerrp: and i must have one
[03:39:15] wagnerrp: i can get the flatbed
[03:41:39] sphery: and, besides, these days, there are hybrids and electric vehicles with big old banks of batteries, so even "car battery" isn't that descriptive
[03:42:25] sphery: (they're packaged as a single unit, right? not individually-replaceable modules?)
[03:42:51] wagnerrp: new wiki user... CRCComputer
[03:42:54] wagnerrp: spam? no spam?
[03:43:07] sphery: try a CRC check
[03:43:44] sphery: (or perhaps that should be a CRC or CR check)
[03:44:25] wagnerrp: hang on, i already banned him a month ago

Ok, good, so thats already how I thought it must be:) 2nd question: in mythtv-setup I can scan in two places: from Input conections and from Channel Editor. How do I know which channels mythtv will scan if I scan from within input connections? Mythtv always seems to miss one channel, so I need to manually add it
[12:19:04] Curly060: argl, sent too early...
[12:19:36] Curly060: so I manually add it in channel editor by adding another transponder
[12:20:40] Curly060: I have seen some files under /usr/share/dvb/dvb-t/* Is mythtv using that info from there? Where does mythtv get its info, when I tell it to make a full scan? Importing channels.conf doesnt work, because then I miss all EPG data (as mentioned in the docs)
[12:24:20] Curly060: and if I tell it to make a full scan, it detects conflicting channels, because some channels are found on diff transponders. however, I know all my transponders and their frequencies. I simply would love to edit some config file to tell mythtv: here, thosre are my transponders, only scan these! and if I ever decide to delete a video source or all channels, I would like mythtv-setup to STILL know this information (so ideally it would be in some system
[12:26:26] Curly060: and my last question: as mentioned I have a dual tuner. so when I am in PIP mode, i can only choose between channels on same multiplex, unless I manually change the input. is there any way to avoid manually chaning the input? cant i tell mythtv: I wanna awatch channel A and B and if they are not on same multiplex, justfind a free tuner for me and show it?
[12:27:21] pepsiman: last question: use 0.25

Ok, that is a way of doing it, but currently i am still evaluating mythtv and deleting video sources etc quite often. so every time i must re-edit my transports. thats why it would be nice to have it in some config file which mythtv-setup uses, so that the scan is immedately doing the right thing. but thanks so far for the help!

What I havent figured out yet: how do I sort my channels in my custom order so that in liveTV they are all where I want?
[13:21:31] pepsiman: UK DVB-T. I'm currently missing EPG for the Channel 4 family of channels from Saturday 26th onwards. Anyone else?
[13:21:48] pepsiman: Curly060, my channel numbers just work, sorry
[13:23:40] Curly060: pepsiman: so after a delete-rescan cycle, all your channel numbers are nice? dont you get channel numbers like 2, 15,412, 15365?
[13:24:39] pepsiman: my channel numbers match the expected Freeview channel numbers exactly
[13:26:15] stuartm: it all depends if the broadcasters in your country following the DVB specification or whether they are using a proprietary numbering system
[13:27:11] Curly060: stuartm: ok,thanks. I guess I am out of luck then. this is Germany, DVB-T. So what options do I have to get back my custom sorting after a delete-rescan cycle?
[13:29:46] stuartm: that's a good question, there's no simple solution right now, if you are really comfortable with mysql you could create a backup before scanning and copy back the numbering but I'm really not advocating that as the novice or even intermediate level solution
[13:30:16] stuartm: I'm wondering for the first time if we need a 'preserve channel numbering' option in the scanner
[13:30:50] Curly060: stuartm: since I am a developer and frequently work with databases, that is actually an option for me. it is just a question of knowing the right tables. I guess I can google this info
[13:33:21] Curly060: stuartm: that would indeed be a great option to have. on the other hand: how often does one delete all channels and rescan? while evauating mythtv it happnes often, but in everyday use, I guess not so much
[13:33:56] stuartm: Curly060: 'channel' table – I'd do a CREATE TABLE ... SELECT on it to make a backup before scanning, then after scanning an UPDATE channel a, channel_backup b SET a.channum=b.channum WHERE a.serviceid=b.serviceid;

[17:23:10] sphery: ujee: also, please mention where on the wiki it's wrong (or correct it)
[17:23:19] ujee: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mythfilldatabase
[17:23:22] sphery: also, please mention what's obsolete in the --help output
[17:23:34] ujee: the information about '--file'

[17:25:15] ujee: ah.. the wiki is correct below.. the example at "--update" was confusing
[17:26:37] ujee: sphery, how do I configure that? (using tv_grab_dvb_plus for complicated reasons)

[17:28:50] loganrun: sphery, yes I have version 0.24 and want to upgrade to latest version, of course I don't see it for FC14
[17:29:24] sphery: ujee: did you see http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mythfilldatabase#3 . . . _--file_flag (or did you just add it)?
[17:29:43] sphery: loganrun: my recommendation would be to upgrade to a version of your distro that has packages for the current version of MythTV
[17:29:46] ujee: I made no changes, sphery
[17:30:16] sphery: loganrun: but with 0.24-fixes, deleting a recording without a file works if you a) follow directions in the wiki link I provided and b) disable "Auto-expire instead of delete"
[17:30:25] ujee: sphery, it's the example under option "--update" that confused me
[17:30:32] loganrun: sphery, yeah I guess that is the only option, it takes forever to get things running on a new system. the lircd is always screwed up
[17:30:45] sphery: loganrun: with 0.25-fixes, "Auto-expire instead of delete" is always enabled, which is why we now can't properly delete recording metadata without files
[17:31:04] sphery: loganrun: but find_orphans.py will handle it for you
[17:31:26] sphery: ujee: ok, thanks... I'm cleaning up lots of old/outdated garbage on the page
[17:31:33] loganrun: find orphans works well, it is just the frontend crashes periodically when jumping around on the recording which is a real pain

[17:35:42] sphery: so it's probably worthwhile when you can make the time
[17:35:51] sphery: (but I do recognize that it's a bit of a time sink)

[18:06:18] sphery: Oleg_: yeah
[18:07:12] sphery: justdave: /me guesses you have your mysql database on a file system using ext4 (with barriers enabled) and the required mysql access is blocking all I/O (including reading the recording file), so transitions fail

[18:10:03] justdave: I see lots of barrier=1 on all the ext3 devices
[18:10:38] justdave: should those be barrier=0?
[18:14:21] sphery: barrier = 1 means barriers are enabled
[18:14:38] sphery: barriers provide safety in catastrophic circumstances
[18:14:52] sphery: without them, you may get data--or even file system--corruption
[18:15:20] justdave: googling on that info I'm seeing recommendations to have mysql on a different platter than the recordings, and that's already the case
[18:15:30] sphery: but the cost is terrible I/O performance, because they say, "when something syncs data, wait until that data is on the platter before allowing anyone else to read or write data"
[18:15:51] justdave: it's also a relatively ancient box and the drives are probably slow
[18:16:06] justdave: (they were pretty high-end when it was bought, but it's a number of years old :)
[18:16:11] sphery: I'd recommend testing with barrier=0 explicitly specified for the file system with mysql data
[18:16:24] sphery: and if it fixes the problem, post the results to -users list and appropriate tickets
[18:16:48] sphery: like #10743 (and about 10 others, IIRC)
[18:16:48] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/10743 **
[18:18:18] justdave: in my case when it hits the program change, livetv hangs with a black screen for about 30 seconds, then it goes back to the main menu with a "read timed out" or some similar error, and I have to pick Watch TV again
[18:18:45] justdave: and then it usually has staticky audio on the first attempt and I have to hit escape and do it again to get normal audio
