[00:32:24] k-man: coop, is there a new 1080p apple TV?
[00:33:16] k-man: apparantly so!
[00:35:00] ertyu-m: its the old one, just with 1080p
[00:36:09] k-man: i bet it can only play 1080p when encoded in a very specific codec
[00:36:28] k-man: err.. that terminology doesnt quite sound right but you get what i mean
[00:37:34] wagnerrp: if that specific codec is h264, and restricted to only a small subset of the whole feature set, then yes
[00:37:54] wagnerrp: it can probably do mjpeg too
[00:38:30] k-man: does the apple TV out of the box offer any method of playing local content? i thought it didn't?
[00:39:12] wagnerrp: at least the previous appletv has no local content
[00:39:25] wagnerrp: only 8GB of flash, and that is reserved for apps
[00:39:42] k-man: wagnerrp, oh i kind of meant on the local network
[00:40:36] wagnerrp: likely anything it can find through DAAP and AFS
[00:40:49] wagnerrp: it may have a native UPNP browser
[00:41:52] ertyu-m: airplay
[00:41:57] ertyu-m: does it do dlna?
[00:42:18] wagnerrp: for most intents and purposes, dlna == upnp
[00:42:35] wagnerrp: and i though airplay was intended as a push architecture
[00:43:02] wagnerrp: your PC or iPhone would push to the ATV over airplay, not the ATV pulling from one of those devices
[00:43:14] ertyu-m: ya, probably

[15:56:44] jimbolaya: I keep getting sidetracked by apparently irrelevant errors.
[15:58:40] jimbolaya: I removed all the database files, I removed all the packages and tried starting over from scratch.
[15:59:51] jimbolaya: I reinstalled the Ubuntu packages from the mythbuntu packages using 0.25 since I've got a Ceton.
[16:01:56] jimbolaya: When I run mythtv-setup, I get the Country/Language dialog, but there's no Language list. Looking in the kern.log I see lots of errors about libQtCore.so.4.6.2 segfaulting.
[16:02:23] jimbolaya: Can anyone help. This should be as clean an install as installing from scratch.

[18:43:01] kmcorbett_: Q: what are best / recommended ways to export TV recordings from MythTV 0.25 to Plex Media Server? and upload from backend (Linux) to Synology NAS. I'm using mythlink.pl and rsync. ideas?
[18:44:13] wagnerrp: why not just record to the NAS?
[18:44:29] wagnerrp: or remove the drives from the NAS, and use your backend as the file server?
[18:46:35] kmcorbett_: mythtv files lack file name cues used by Plex Media Manager to gather metadata.
[18:47:45] kmcorbett_: NAS has various useful features. Plex sometimes gets multiple files or the same ep, and that works better when the files arrive in the same folder structure.

[22:20:05] wagnerrp: MO disks were magnetically written to, and optically read

[23:01:16] peitolm: no
[23:01:21] ** sphery hates marketing-based measurements **
[23:01:32] wagnerrp: opposite, about a foot and a half
[23:01:52] sphery: ah, yeah, farther...
[23:01:54] peitolm: a retina display is based on a resolution at a distance
[23:02:08] peitolm: and i believe is something like an arcsecond of angle
[23:02:11] wagnerrp: a retina display involves lasers and lenses
[23:02:17] wagnerrp: arcminute
[23:02:25] wagnerrp: 20/20 vision is one arcminute
[23:02:31] streeter (streeter!streeter@nat/redhat/x-vhdhfrnkltqasbhh) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[23:02:39] peitolm: it's based on visual acuity
[23:02:46] wagnerrp: theoretical limit is roughly half that
[23:02:46] peitolm: rather an a specific dpi
[23:03:08] wagnerrp: a "retina display" is a system that projects an image onto your retina
[23:03:17] wagnerrp: apples are just a high density display by another name
[23:03:52] sphery: isn't that a retinal display
[23:04:01] peitolm: http://www.tuaw.com/2012/03/01/retina-display . . . ng-the-math/ has the mathematics on it
[23:04:04] kormoc: wagnerrp, I thought it was VRD (Virtual Retinal Display) not just Retinal Display
[23:04:15] wagnerrp: has to be virtual?
[23:04:52] kormoc: Just was sure that's the 'official' term
[23:06:01] sphery: no worries, I'm sure apple will sue anyone who uses that name, anyway
[23:06:07] peitolm: it's pretty much all marketing
[23:06:19] peitolm: but has some basis in reality
[23:06:38] sphery: good thing ubiquitous VRD is not on the close horizon
[23:06:44] wagnerrp: there are advantages to having a high density display
[23:07:01] wagnerrp: there are even still advantages to having displays too high definition for you to resolve each pixel
[23:07:32] wagnerrp: while i dislike the name, i cant fault apple for finally bringing such things to the mass market
[23:07:48] peitolm: i have a hi-res screen on this laptop, and I have to bump up most of the fonts and zoom levels to make it readable
[23:07:48] sphery: like the advantage of having a 41 megapixel camera in a phone :)
[23:07:49] wagnerrp: before, they were pretty much limited to very high priced medical imaging equipment
[23:08:10] peitolm: but it does mean the ui elements take up proportionally a lot less space
[23:08:21] wagnerrp: it does not mean that at all
[23:08:45] wagnerrp: it means UI elements on poorly designed systems take up proportionally a lot less space
[23:09:01] peitolm: exqueezeme?
[23:09:09] sphery: yes, UI elements that are based on point size (=1/72 in) take up less space
[23:09:18] lis0r: the whole point of the retina display is that UI controls take the same space
[23:09:23] lis0r: they just look much much better
[23:09:30] peitolm: on my hi-res screen, the window bars, and other 'ui element's take up less space on the screen
[23:09:38] lis0r: only on crummy half-arsed systems does a high res screen result in small ui elements
[23:09:41] wagnerrp: the whole notion of a vectorized UI is that UI controls take up the same space
[23:09:56] wagnerrp: this is not some new concept apple came up with
[23:09:57] peitolm: there are bits that aren't vectorized
[23:09:58] sphery: (that was a joke... meaning an inch is an inch regardless of point size)
[23:10:09] ** peitolm shrugs **
[23:10:22] wagnerrp: peitolm: thats because whatever UI you are using on that laptop was not designed for high density displays
[23:10:36] wagnerrp: for example, take mythtv's UI
[23:10:53] peitolm: by default, the title bar is N pixels, on this hi-res 15" screen its smaller than the normal 15" screen on the other MBP
[23:10:53] kormoc: peitolm, so you're claiming that an ipad3's ui is smaller then an ipad2's physically?
[23:10:54] peitolm: nope
[23:10:54] wagnerrp: one 50" TV will look the same as the next
[23:11:18] wagnerrp: whether thats a HDTV, a QHDTV, or an old, crappy rear projection SD tube
[23:11:28] peitolm: kormac, nope, i'm specifically talking about this hi-res screen
[23:11:48] peitolm: not talking about some 50" plasma, or 6mx3m 8xprojector surround system
[23:11:49] wagnerrp: the UI is designed to scale to match a percentage of the size of the screen
[23:12:09] peitolm: well, in that case the scaling is broken
[23:12:10] wagnerrp: and not try to always consume the exact same number of pixels
[23:12:43] kormoc: ugh. meaningless statements waste time. Woo
[23:13:18] peitolm: are you saying that the menubars will be the same physcial height on a 30" cinema screen as on a 11.3" air?
[23:13:25] peitolm: (give or take dpi differences)
[23:13:39] wagnerrp: no, im saying if you take two 30" displays, of different resolutions
[23:13:45] wagnerrp: the elements will be the same size on each
[23:13:57] wagnerrp: but will be composed of different pixel counts on each
[23:14:17] wagnerrp: the iPad2 UI and iPad3 UI will look exactly the same
[23:14:31] wagnerrp: however those UI elements will now be composed of four times the number of pixels
[23:14:51] peitolm: perhaps it's some oddness with this specifc screen then, becuase it's not working like that for me
[23:15:00] rmckee (rmckee!~rmckee@203.166.49.1) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:15:02] wagnerrp: you have an ipad3?
[23:15:11] kormoc: peitolm, and what OS is this screen running on?
[23:15:17] peitolm: no, i have a 15" MBP with hires screen, as i said before
[23:15:28] peitolm: osx 10.7
[23:15:29] lis0r: peitolm: which is why I said "only on crummy half-arsed systems does a high res screen result in small ui elements"
[23:15:34] map7farm (map7farm!~mythserve@101.171.226.130) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[23:15:35] wagnerrp: OSX has not yet been updated to properly scale UI elements in that fashion
[23:15:43] wagnerrp: only iOS has
[23:15:45] lis0r: a MBP running osx counts as a crummy half arsed system
[23:16:00] lis0r: they've been failing to make it resolution independent for years upon years
[23:16:16] ** peitolm shrugs, **
[23:16:19] kormoc: 10.8 is getting updated with higher-res ui elements
[23:16:32] kormoc: but it's not going to be entirely res independent
[23:16:49] peitolm: the icons etc, are already resolution independent as far as i know,
[23:17:14] wagnerrp: peitolm: have you ever gone through the "cleartype" setup on a Windows machine?
[23:17:28] peitolm: i would be rather miffed buying any hi-res screen and still having 1/2" titlebars
[23:17:33] peitolm: on any OS
[23:17:50] wagnerrp: peitolm: if your screen is still the same size, why would you want smaller titlebars?
[23:18:06] peitolm: (with the possible exception of mobile devices where big buttons are probably helpful)
[23:18:22] peitolm: because they give me more screen space to edit photos amungst other things
[23:18:46] kormoc: You can enable HiDPI mode in Qartz Debug
[23:18:54] kormoc: but it only supports 2x
[23:19:13] wagnerrp: so your UI should allow you to set a different scaling parameter, and resize everything to match
[23:19:54] wagnerrp: if you want to sit 6" from your monitor, and use 1/8" title bars, it should allow you
[23:20:10] wagnerrp: of course on a low density display, there wouldnt be enough pixels to read anything
[23:20:35] wagnerrp: on the other hand, 3–4' away from the monitor with standard sized 1/2" title bars would have _very_ clear text
[23:20:50] wagnerrp: because you actually have enough pixels to do very smooth rendering of the curves
[23:20:58] peitolm: kormoc: yeah, i thought there was supposed to be some setting for it, but couldn't find it, (ony just upgraded to 10.7 on this laptop)
[23:21:05] wagnerrp: THAT is what a high density display get syou
[23:21:12] lis0r: and this is why we can't have nice things: because people with internets assburgers would complain about how they've been gypped out of essentially useless desktop space :(
[23:21:30] peitolm: ?@lis0r
[23:21:33] wagnerrp: you dont have to muck about with the subpixel-rendering and antialiasing tricks like the cleartype and other mechanisms did
[23:21:40] peitolm: wagnerrp: i don't doubt that
[23:21:43] wagnerrp: your pixels are actually that small
[23:21:47] wagnerrp: so you just render it directly
[23:21:53] wagnerrp: fonts are far more legible
[23:22:00] wagnerrp: images look much smoother
[23:22:08] peitolm: font smooth just makes things burry as far as i can tell
[23:22:17] lis0r: ffs
[23:22:20] lis0r: use a bloody iPhone
[23:22:24] lis0r: it's not like they're rare
[23:22:31] wagnerrp: yes, because its using crappy hacks like subpixel rendering and antialiasing
[23:22:37] lis0r: it should be immeidately apparent why almost every LCD display should be thrown away
[23:22:49] wagnerrp: rather than actually having enough pixel density to render smoothly
[23:22:51] kormoc: ugh
[23:22:52] lis0r: and people should use high res LCDs and quit bitching about losing pointless resolution
[23:22:59] ** peitolm wonders what lis0r's problem is **
[23:23:11] peitolm: who was bitching about losing pointless resolution?
[23:23:26] lis0r: high resolution LCDs are an absolute beauty, reading on them is an absolute joy, with no bluriness, no eyestrain, nothing
[23:23:39] lis0r: but you've got to use that resolution properly
[23:23:53] lis0r: rather than making UIs smaller because idiots don't realise the whole point of the damned things
[23:23:57] ** peitolm agrees with wagnerrp about "subpixel render" **
