[00:03:33] Pehnep: Like that?
[00:03:57] wagnerrp: wait, why are you running mythfilldatabase?
[00:04:46] wagnerrp: also, mythtv pulls its information from ~/.mythtv/mysql.txt, where ever the $HOME variable points
[00:05:09] Pehnep: I've no idea..
[00:05:22] Pehnep: Hmh, so I should read/edit that file?
[00:05:46] wagnerrp: you should be running all backend tasks and configuration as the user that will eventually be running the backend
[00:05:58] wagnerrp: and if youre using the mythbuntu init scripts, that would be the 'mythtv' user
[00:07:18] Pehnep: A 'mythtv' user you say?
[00:14:06] Pehnep: Well, all this is just giving me a headache right now.. and as it's getting late as well here I'm just going to go sleep and give it a fresh sober look tomorrow.
[00:14:50] Pehnep: But regardless of that, many thanks for the help, wagnerrp.

[01:06:56] Oleg_: why doesn't mythtv give a normal name to those recordings I wanna save to a hard drive?
[01:07:18] Oleg_: in "Watch Recordings" section, you see a normal name for your recording
[01:07:30] Oleg_: but in the storage folder, you just see 1111_20111013200001.mpg
[01:10:14] Captain_Murdoch: why doesn't MySQL store it's data in a human readable text file in case you want to lookup something real easily?
[01:10:33] Captain_Murdoch: look up mythlink.pl, it can give you human readable links for your recordings.

[03:22:41] clydefrog: Okay, I have VIDEO_TS folders that I need to stream to my front end. The disk is local to the backend. The disk is mounted in /var/lib/mythtv/TV. I did this because apparently the pre-built storage groups breaks the capability for VIDEO_TS playback. I can get the directory listed in the backend/frontend box, but not the standalone frontend. Also, after placing the VIDEO_TS folder in its own directory, it still does not play. Pl
[03:23:11] wagnerrp: are these encrypted or unencrypted folders?
[03:23:18] clydefrog: unencrypted
[03:26:38] clydefrog: i've also share these folders through samba. manually sharing these folders is necessary since they must be handled outside of the storage groups.
[03:26:53] wagnerrp: why is that necessary?
[03:28:20] clydefrog: since the directories must be manually created, because of the VIDEO_TS playback issue, i read that they must be manually share as well in order to stream to a remote front end.
[03:28:38] wagnerrp: huh?
[03:29:09] wagnerrp: VIDEO_TS folders play back just fine over storage groups, and can be streamed from the backend to the frontend without samba
[03:29:17] wagnerrp: the only issue is with encrypted disks
[03:30:06] clydefrog: i read that only unencrypted .ISO's were able to use the storage groups.
[03:30:15] wagnerrp: and VIDEO_TS too
[03:32:17] clydefrog: okay. but i tried playing the VIDEO_TS files through the storage groups and through manually created directories/shares and they still will not play. I tried storage groups first, then after reading that there was an issue with VIDEO_TS directories, I tried creating them manually, but no dice either way. Any ideas?
[03:32:33] wagnerrp: what is it doing, specifically?
[03:34:12] clydefrog: through storage groups: recognizes the directory and movie files. When selecting to "Play" the movie or even clicking on a .VOB or .IFO file, it says "Please Wait" briefly and then goes to a blank screen.
[03:34:31] wagnerrp: could i see some frontend logs?

[04:18:29] clydefrog: what could it be?
[04:21:01] clydefrog: trying another movie
[04:32:26] sphery: Hehe, so for the last couple of weeks, I've noticed some serious "reception" issues with NBC (blockiness and smearing and audio cutting out). So, I went up in the attic to check out the antenna, but I couldn't find any problems. So, I thought maybe it was actually HDD errors causing slow I/O and problems writing the video, but didn't see any signs of errors. Tonight I half-remembered that I had switched the system to use vdpau decode ...
[04:32:32] sphery: ... just recently--switched back to ffmpeg decode + vdpau render, and all the issues are gone.
[04:33:11] wagnerrp: lies! no software decoder could be more robust against errors than a hardware decoder!
[04:33:42] sphery: well, the problem is I'm trying to use vdpau with an Athlon II 255 instead of an Atom
[04:33:52] sphery: so, it's my own fault
[04:34:39] sphery: Some people claim that there's an Atom to blame, but I know, it's nobody's fault.

[04:42:53] shawnboy: I've searched a lot and can't find anything about this--> Through mythfrontend, I chose one previously recorded show and chose "transcode" from the menu for that episode. When finished, it had converted 500MB mpg to over 1GB nuv. ??
[04:43:15] wagnerrp: hehe
[04:43:54] shawnboy: It replaced the mpg with the nuv. That's not at all what I had in mind.
[04:44:21] sphery: you need to set up transcoding profiles with proper bitrate
[04:44:23] wagnerrp: the only time you end up with an mpg is when you specifically configure a 'lossless' transcoding profile
[04:44:32] wagnerrp: and then you have to start with an mpg
[04:44:40] sphery: and you want to set them up to use MPEG-4, not RTJPEG
[04:44:54] wagnerrp: all it does is clip out the cut points, and fix up the frames around the cuts
[04:45:06] sphery: note that there's a setting to scale bitrate with resolution--which can make for very high bitrate transcodes with default settings
[04:45:06] wagnerrp: should take a couple minutes, shaves about 30–40% off the file
[04:45:16] wagnerrp: most people use the 'autodetect mpeg2' profile
[04:45:21] shawnboy: I saw autodetect, high, medium, and low. So I must set up a new one for MP4 if I want that?
[04:45:26] sphery: and, yeah, lossless is the only transcoding worth doing :)
[04:45:52] sphery: no, you just need to configure autodetect/high/medium/low
[04:46:42] shawnboy: ok. I'll look again. I remember seeing RTJPEG but not MP4. I learned something here again. Thanks for you patience and help, everyone.
[04:50:30] sphery: best advice, though, is don't transcode
[04:50:40] wagnerrp: (or do lossless)
[04:50:46] [R]: friends don't less friends transcode their video

[05:05:05] wagnerrp: wait
[05:05:09] wagnerrp: the files are already mpeg

[13:53:10] wagnerrp: get a better network
[13:53:30] wagnerrp: mythcommflag should not be able to run better than maybe 10–15MB/s

[13:58:20] laga: ionicing mythcommflag might help, but i'm not sure.
[13:58:36] laga: .. because ionice will partition system io load, not network load.
[13:58:46] mcmoyer: yeah, unfortunately that's the case. I think I can borrow a gig switch from work to see if that alleviates the problem
[13:58:47] laga: can't you QoS the NAS traffic?
[13:58:59] wagnerrp: just buy a switch
[13:59:10] wagnerrp: you can get a 5-port gigabit for like $30
[13:59:11] laga: wagnerrp: probably the best solution
[13:59:16] laga: assuming the NAS can keep up
[14:00:11] wagnerrp: yes, assuming that

[14:04:23] quicksilver: you could QoS the traffic on the backend but by the time you've read enough and trial-and-errored enough to get QoS working the way you want, you coul dhave bought gig switch :)

[16:30:58] sphery: the whole, "let's process the entire source file character by character using javascript" approach sucks
[16:32:27] sphery: so, the change of version control system had absolutely no effect whatsoever on my coding/development approach--but it completely broke my ability to look at the code/history/... with our tools (trac and github)
[16:32:39] wagnerrp: sphery: CLEAR_SETTINGS_CACHE did not exist prior to this https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/cde61 . . . inserver.cpp

[16:32:56] wagnerrp: and at that point, it was added as MESSAGE[]:[]CLEAR_SETTINGS_CACHE
[16:33:00] sphery: now, something that would have taken a couple minutes with trac/svn takes 10s of minutes because of the lack of integration
[16:33:05] wagnerrp: i dont think that bit in mythweb wver worked
[16:33:25] sphery: well, it seems my ticket didn't have a patch on it, so it's possible it didn't work
[16:33:45] sphery: I may not have tested it after it was put in
[16:33:58] sphery: http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3305 was the ticket

[16:36:03] sphery: yeah, that one just modified it to check for backend_command before using it
[16:36:43] sphery: anyway, the whole "let's just allow users to poke random values into settings directly" editor in mythweb needs to go away
[16:37:05] sphery: if we want a web-based editor, it needs to be a proper editor with bounds checking and such
[16:37:53] sphery: especially since they only get a setting name--which isn't necessarily descriptive of the proper values--and don't get names for the actual values to be used
[16:41:31] wagnerrp: odd, it should be giving the hash
