[00:03:20] stuartm: so Valve are giving away Portal this weekend and since I never played it the first time around I decided the offer was too good to pass up ... I was expecting something harder/longer and more involving to be honest, it's a solid enough game and yes the character and humour was fun, but it was all over before I could become too involved to really care :/
[00:04:12] wagnerrp: yeah, its only a 150min game or so
[00:04:21] Trisooma (Trisooma!~trisooma_@82.95.240.160) has quit (Quit: Enuff for today)
[00:04:33] wagnerrp: actually, i was really pissed off in the beginning, thinking the test chambers were it and i would beat the game in under an hour
[00:05:11] wagnerrp: its a big problem with the second one (only ~6hrs IIRC)
[00:06:37] stuartm: wagnerrp: aye I was thinking the same, although it didn't feel like the back half of the game was as long as the test chamber portion, maybe because the learning curve was over
[00:07:06] sphery: Yeah, 2nd was much better--since it was longer and had solo and co-op modes--but still short. I've heard that development wise, it's about the same as any other game, though--puzzle games are much harder to design/test because.
[00:07:31] sphery: because you have to make them fair/solvable/challenging/...
[00:07:47] stuartm: the end song made me laugh, I briefly considered tracking down a copy for my mp3 player until I reasoned that I'd be sick of it _very_ quickly
[00:08:02] sphery: I guess the free portal is UK only, though--I still see it as $19.99 here
[00:08:29] stuartm: sphery: really? Could be I guess, I found out about it through The Register
[00:08:35] sphery: (not a problem since I have it on The Orange Box/XB360 plus I got it free on Steam some time ago.)
[00:09:00] sphery: guess the steam one was either when I bought Portal 2 or was some other giveaway
[00:10:08] stuartm: sphery: I guess it's also harder with a puzzle game like Portal to ensure that it's not possible to short-circuit the solution through an unforeseen use of the portals, that takes a lot of planning and testing
[00:11:31] wagnerrp: stuartm: there still is short cutting that takes place
[00:11:33] stuartm: anyhow, at least there are is challenges/advance level stuff to work through to add some longevity, I've got to get my money's worth ;)
[00:11:55] wagnerrp: in the first one, there are the challenge levels specifically to come up with shorter ways of doing it
[00:12:23] stuartm: wagnerrp: ah, I haven't looked a challenge level yet
[00:12:23] wagnerrp: they basically set the different grades based on what playtesters were able to pull off
[00:12:39] stuartm: s/a/at a/
[00:12:44] wagnerrp: and there were one or two that i came in a portal under the challenge
[00:23:14] sphery: ah, wonderful, wildfire breaking news in an old recording... the station decided to make the show a tiny 1/8th of the screen size, then do live picture of the fire at 1/4 screen size and have a huge background of blue "ruffling in the wind" material
[00:23:51] Korny2: sphery: what wildfire?
[00:24:01] sphery: gotta admit that I'm impressed they at least showed the show and left its audio in place--most of stations around here don't
[00:24:08] sphery: one from a long time ago--sometime last year
[00:24:20] sphery: they're relatively common here in FL
[00:24:45] stuartm: sphery: it really sucks when a 'breaking news' or overrun live event displaces a programme you were recording and you only discover that when you come to watch it days, weeks or months later, by which time it's too late to catch the repeat
[00:25:03] sphery: yeah
[00:25:31] sphery: especially when you've already watched the first 3/4 of the show and you miss the end
[00:25:35] stuartm: thankfully it doesn't happen too often, but when it does ...
[00:26:14] wizbit: its also annoying when a show ends too early because date settings are wrong
[00:26:16] sphery: or, like what happened with The Polar Express, they keep breaking in for short breaks and then going back to the show (cutting out a little at a time), but you go through 10+ of those short breaks before you realize that they've cut out 90% of that half-hour section
[00:26:30] sphery: (I still wonder what ever happened at the end of that movie...)
[00:26:31] stuartm: wizbit: that's what ntp is for
[00:26:39] wizbit: aye i use that now
[00:26:52] sphery: hehe, yeah, ntp is very important on a mythtv box :)
[00:26:53] wizbit: and i set 5 minutes to record after the show
[00:27:05] gholmlund (gholmlund!~quassel@76-191-205-135.dsl.dynamic.sonic.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:27:16] wizbit: i have 1 ntp server, and the frontends talk to it
[00:30:16] wagnerrp: actually, you have an ntp server running on each frontend
[00:30:29] wizbit: haha i was thinking that
[00:31:17] wizbit: the backend box speaks to outside time servers, the frontends sync with the backend box
[00:31:46] sphery: perhaps he has 1 level 3 ntp server and the frontends talk to it and become level 4 ntp servers
[00:31:49] sphery: :)
[00:32:25] sphery: er, "stratum"
[00:32:55] wizbit: drift
[00:33:59] stuartm: sounds fiddly, I just let mine correspond directly with the outside source
[00:34:43] wizbit: my frontends wouldnt start complaining about time was out, thats why i got ntp sorted out
[00:35:10] sphery: I do like wizbit and it works quite well
[00:35:26] wizbit: ?
[00:35:43] sphery: of course, I have 9 computers on my internal network, so having all of them hitting external servers is a waste
[00:35:52] wizbit: aye
[00:38:12] wizbit: mythtv has been running without any problems at all, and now its self sufficient :D
[00:41:02] wagnerrp: it buys and installs new hard drives when you run out of room?
[00:41:29] wizbit: i was wasting electricity by using my digital amp for tv and movies, now i use the internal tv speakers for tv, and my digital amp for movies and music only
[00:42:25] wizbit: wagnerrp: no it deletes old recordings, i dont need to do a thing
[00:42:53] styelz: yer still gunna die
[00:42:53] sphery: I'm trying to figure out how to get mine to watch them for me.
[00:42:59] sphery: that's the part that takes most of my time
[00:43:06] wizbit: haha
[00:43:53] wizbit: i dont watch that much, but its nice to know that my hard drive is full of pick of the days
[00:44:07] wizbit: and 5 star movies :D

[02:14:45] wagnerrp: i mean, i understand what it does... i just dont understand why we have it

[02:15:00] [R]: i've used it many times
[02:15:06] wagnerrp: why?
[02:15:19] [R]: to download like 1 or 2 days immediately
[02:15:33] wagnerrp: like... --refresh-today --refresh-tomorrow?
[02:15:40] [R]: lol, probably
[02:16:17] wagnerrp: sphery: im thinking for now, i just remove the help text so people dont know the options exist, but it wont break things
[02:16:37] sphery: that works
[02:17:02] sphery: though it just means that it will delay the surprise/broken scripts until you actually remove them later
[02:17:37] wagnerrp: i can spam a warning, post a message to -dev
[02:18:17] sphery: either way
[02:18:47] sphery: I just don't think it's that bad to remove them right away

[02:34:54] lowone: hello! question hopefully i am just missing something painfully obvous!? mythtv .24.1 debian stable +debian multimedia... mceusb2 lirc: irw reports back all buttons fine, they match the lircrc for mythtv but no worky? is there some place I need to tell mythtvfrontend to use a remote/lircrc?
[02:35:19] wagnerrp: you edited the lircrc in ~/.mythtv/lircrc ?
[02:35:26] lowone: yes
[02:35:39] lowone: /var/lib/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
[02:35:59] zombor (zombor!~zombor_@kohana/developer/zombor) has joined #mythtv-users
[02:36:42] lowone: (where debian's automagiced mythtv users home directory is)
[02:36:43] iamlindoro: /var/lib/mythtv is highly unlikely to be the home directory for the user running the frontend
[02:37:31] lowone: root@mythtvout:~# cat /etc/passwd|grep mythtv
[02:37:31] lowone: mythtv:x:106:113::/var/lib/mythtv:/bin/sh
[02:37:34] sphery: some distros are setting system dirs, like that, up as HOME just so we have a real HOME dir
[02:37:56] iamlindoro: that is completely moronic
[02:38:01] wagnerrp: are you running mythfrontend as the user 'mythtv'?
[02:38:18] ** wagnerrp agrees completely **
[02:38:19] iamlindoro: Which is par for the course with debian myth packages
[02:38:22] sphery: yeah, not sure why they don't use /home/mythtv
[02:38:33] sphery: and then put the server data in a system dir
[02:38:45] lowone: kdm + autologin as mythtv, autolaunch mythfrontend via kde's autostart
[02:39:01] andreax (andreax!~andreaz@p57B93C85.dip.t-dialin.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[02:39:05] iamlindoro: anyway, the frontend logs will tell you what file it is loading, and if the file is valid
[02:39:28] sphery: also, check for a $HOME/.lircrc
[02:39:44] sphery: if it's not the same file (or is a link), it will cause problems
[02:39:45] iamlindoro: if it's loading the correct file, and reporting success, then your LIRC daemon socket doesn't match the one configured in mythtv
[02:40:00] sphery: I think we now look at ~/.lircrc first, then ~/.mythtv/lircrc
[02:40:00] lowone: i tried putting a copy there as there was none and no help
[02:40:06] zombor (zombor!~zombor_@kohana/developer/zombor) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[02:40:19] iamlindoro: again, check the logs
[02:40:21] sphery: but, yeah, frontend logs would be revealing
[02:41:06] sphery: should say something like: 2011-08–13 03:35:22.402 LIRC: Successfully initialized '/var/run/lirc/lircd' using '/home/mythtv/.lircrc' config
[02:41:08] lowone: do i need to enable logging for the front end? nothing obvous in /var/log
[02:41:16] sphery: if not, then it's not using lirc
[02:41:19] iamlindoro: run the frontend from a terminal
[02:45:17] k-man: iamlindoro, do you use mac homebrew on your OSX machines at all?
[02:45:21] iamlindoro: no

[04:46:54] karl370: I'm using mythbuntu 11.04 and am having trouble getting lirc working (specifically, the receiving portion is what I care about). I'm using a commandir III, and while using the command "mode2 -m --driver=commandir", I was able to see codes generated on the screen when I pressed buttons on my remote. However, when I try to run irw, I get "connect: No such file or directory". frontend log shows "LIRC, Error: Failed to connect to
[04:46:54] karl370: Unix socket '/dev/lircd'" & next line "eno: No such file or directory (2)". I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. Anybody have any ideas?
[04:48:24] wagnerrp: mode2 is only to capture IR codes to program the lircd.conf
[04:48:50] wagnerrp: you need to actually run lircd for applications to connect to

[17:02:54] wagnerrp: there is nothing to it
[17:03:04] wagnerrp: there were no protocol or schema changes
[17:03:19] wagnerrp: its just a simple name change for the benefit of packagers who like to keep to release versions

[19:12:56] iamlindoro: wagnerrp: One-click setup of a backend on OS X, and this is a much newer iteration
[19:12:58] Korny2: in boht live and default
[19:13:02] iamlindoro: all setup done through the Services API
[19:13:57] wagnerrp: Korny2: the only reason to set folders for the livetv group is if you specifically want it somewhere other than your default folders
[19:13:59] iamlindoro: Config tool gets paired with an installer package I built, installs mythbackend, installs MySQL, sets up a DB, sets permissions, sets up daemon services, all with one click of install
[19:14:25] Korny2: 1–4 are seagate 1.5's, 5–6 are 2.0TB that are fully accessible
[19:14:39] iamlindoro: Then the config tool detects all HDHRs on the network, detects any configured SGs, or selects sensible defaults, takes an SD login, and with one click sets up a working recording configuration
[19:15:00] iamlindoro: The result being a working MythTV backend setup on OS X with literally two clicks

[19:18:52] iamlindoro: Not bad for sitting down to learn XCode Friday night

[19:19:27] [R]: its fun!
[19:19:31] wagnerrp: after that bit of configuration hate earlier this week on the mailing list, im wondering just what it would take to get proper hardware autodetection
[19:19:54] iamlindoro: On Linux, a lot, but it is still one of the goals of web setup... at least as far as I'm concerned
[19:20:09] wagnerrp: i know as it stands, all the various analog captures just enumerate /dev/video<n> and /dev/v4l/video<n>, and apply more or less filtering to the results
[19:20:39] wagnerrp: IVTV filters for what it thinks denotes an mpeg encoder, HDPVR filters for what it thinks is an HDPVR
[19:20:54] wagnerrp: and V4L just pull everything regardless of whether its a framegrabber or not
[19:21:27] wagnerrp: i guess we could define a priority on those things, try HDPVR and IVTV first
[19:21:34] wagnerrp: lumping everything thats left as a V4L device
[19:21:42] Korny2: Disks still not showing up in machine information on mythweb(yet video can see the drives fine)
[19:22:05] wagnerrp: technically, mythweb doesnt display that information
[19:22:23] wagnerrp: that page is generated by the backend, and proxied through mythweb with a bit of CSS
[19:22:32] iamlindoro: My humble opinion is that hybrid devices should be set up as digital-only, and if people want to use framegrabbers they can set them up themselves
[19:22:36] Korny2: so the backend still isn't seeing those drives then I'm assuming
[19:22:59] Korny2: I even deleted them from the back end and re added them incase of a typo
[19:23:03] wagnerrp: but as mentioned, those drives will only be differentiated from one another once their free space varies by ~15MB or so
[19:23:10] Korny2: but nothing showing up in the logs whatsoever
[19:23:20] Korny2: but neither show up
[19:23:25] wagnerrp: iamlindoro: while i mostly agree with that, what about things like the HVR-2250
[19:23:26] iamlindoro: empty drives don't show up, also issues arise if you are pointing directly at the mountpoint
[19:23:37] iamlindoro: wagnerrp: HVR-2250 is an encoder
[19:23:40] iamlindoro: we shoudl set those up
[19:23:46] wagnerrp: but its a hybrid device
[19:23:59] iamlindoro: but non framegrabber
[19:24:20] Korny2: 900 mb apart in free space at this time
[19:24:26] wagnerrp: ok, you mean just ignore framegrabber, not hybrids specifically

[19:24:40] iamlindoro: well, if the device is framegrabber only, we should set that up
[19:24:55] iamlindoro: I'm just saying if it's a hybrid framegrabber, let's say an HVR-950Q
[19:24:58] iamlindoro: then just set up digitl
[19:25:13] wagnerrp: would there be any way to tell, besides an internal hardware list?
[19:25:29] iamlindoro: If the same dev node probes properly as ivtv, you'd know
[19:25:45] iamlindoro: v4l-only cards don't respond to the ivtv card type IIRC
[19:25:50] iamlindoro: I could be wrong

[19:43:52] wagnerrp: drivers run on your CPU, firmware runs on your hardware

[23:09:22] mattwj2002: xris are you here?
[23:09:27] xris: y
[23:09:37] mattwj2002: is that a why or a yes?
[23:09:48] mattwj2002: :P
[23:10:07] xris: both?
[23:10:21] mattwj2002: :P
[23:10:28] xris: though usually "why" is a ?
[23:10:35] mattwj2002: good point
[23:10:57] mattwj2002: how long did it take for you to get your wintv box from the time you placed the order?
[23:11:28] xris: month and a half?
[23:11:31] mattwj2002: O_O
[23:11:37] wagnerrp: although i dont think it qualifies
[23:11:37] xris: I told you.. I preordered
[23:12:14] mattwj2002: oh yeah that is right
[23:12:17] mattwj2002: sorry I forgot
[23:12:20] Gumby: hi all, which step in setting up my sources adds the xmltvid to the channels database?
[23:12:28] mattwj2002: it says on the website "Availability is 10 days after you order."
[23:12:29] Gumby: is this mythfilldatabase itself?
[23:12:32] xris: I ordered in mid july. they were supposed to be available in august but didn't ship until recently.
[23:12:48] xris: yeah, they're likely still filling backorders
[23:12:57] mattwj2002: ok
[23:13:05] skd5aner: Gumby: depends, if you are using schedules direct, I belive it's when you download the channels from the source originially
[23:13:06] xris: shipping was usps, fairly fast
[23:13:25] wagnerrp: Gumby: when you scan, if the scanner picks up names, and those names correspond to the names provided by your guide data source, the xmltvids will be automatically populated
[23:13:26] xris: you can email them and ask for an estimate when it'll ship
[23:13:37] mattwj2002: xris how is the clear qam treating you? still working as well as you said before?
[23:13:39] mattwj2002: good idea
[23:13:40] mattwj2002: :)
[23:13:46] wagnerrp: in all other scenarios, you must fill them in manually, using the channel editor in mythtv-setup, mythfrontend, or mythweb
[23:13:57] Gumby: wagnerrp: would editing my channel numbers before I ever used mythfilldatabase cause the xmltvid to not download properly?
[23:14:12] xris: hasn't been anything to record all weekend.  :) but I have the new one unplugged for now. been using clearqam with a standard hdhomerun for a long time, though. works great (though I needed a cable amp)
[23:14:26] Gumby: hrm, I think I seem to recall this from a previous setup...
[23:14:32] mattwj2002: I bought a cable amp
[23:14:33] Gumby: my memory is obviously not so great
[23:14:33] wagnerrp: perhaps, whatever it matches against must match exactly with the guide data
[23:14:36] mattwj2002: would you like to see?
[23:14:43] wagnerrp: i thought it was channame, it could be channum as well
[23:14:46] mattwj2002: it hasn't came yet
[23:14:56] Gumby: wagnerrp: I'll look into it (I'll let you know)
[23:15:08] xris: Gumby: if you're on cable, this might help: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Scte65scan
[23:15:37] mattwj2002: O_O
[23:15:49] mattwj2002: Amazon.com just changed their page layout
[23:16:01] xris: mattwj2002: they've been doing AB testing of that for a few months now
[23:16:05] skd5aner: well, several days ago actually
[23:16:21] xris: Gumby: I use that method, but have to do a bunch of tweaks to a number of the channel names to make things match up
[23:16:22] Gumby: xris: satellite unfortunately. But I think my memory is starting to come back. I think if I update my channums before running mythfilldatabase then the xmltvids never get downloaded because there is no match
[23:16:44] skd5aner: I thought it was channame
[23:16:52] skd5aner: cause channums can be user defined
[23:16:54] xris: read through the process, though… that should at least point you in the right direction.
[23:17:02] Gumby: xris: will do, thx
[23:17:02] mattwj2002: anyways here is the amp I bought
[23:17:05] mattwj2002: http://amzn.com/B000WDR94U
[23:17:05] xris: yeah, name is more important. half of the world doesn't use/trust numbers.
[23:17:30] xris: get terminators for the unused ports (assuming you'll have some)
[23:17:41] mattwj2002: oh crap
[23:17:44] mattwj2002: I didn't get any
[23:18:13] skd5aner: mattwj2002: that's the same amp I have... although I think I have a slight ground loop issue on analog channels <10, I get a little bit a scrolling line syndrome
[23:18:20] xris: you should be fine without them. they help a little, though
[23:18:28] xris: same for all unused plugs in your hosue
[23:18:31] xris: house.
[23:18:46] xris: wtf, osx fixes every other word I *don't* want, but still lets me type hosue?
[23:18:52] mattwj2002: here is what I'll have plugged into it
[23:18:56] skd5aner: which is odd, because I know for a fact that my cable is using the exact same ground as my electric
[23:19:13] xris: I just have a 4-port radio shack amp.
[23:19:26] xris: variable amp is nice, although I don't see why you wouldn't just leave it on max
[23:20:03] mattwj2002: two ports for an original hdhomerun, wintv box one port, cable box, and cable modem
[23:20:36] xris: ah. my amp is at the end of my run. cable modem on the beginning. that should work fine for you, though.
[23:20:57] ** xris ponders making a Facebook page for schedules direct... **
[23:21:02] mattwj2002: :)
[23:21:32] fendrychl (fendrychl!~fendrychl@ns1.neomezeny-hosting.cz) has left #mythtv-users ()
[23:21:44] Gumby: wagnerrp, xris.. I was correct.. there must be some channum matching that goes on. I reverted the channum (I had channum + 10000) and then ran mythfilldatabase --only-update-channels and now the channels for that satellite have xmltvids
[23:22:11] xris: interesting
[23:22:18] xris: maybe it's channum + name
[23:22:25] xris: or callsign.
[23:22:47] Gumby: its definitely not 'just' channum
[23:22:58] Gumby: not all channels populated but most did
[23:23:24] xris: yeah, I know I have to tweak a bunch of the callsigns/names from what scte65scan tells me
[23:23:51] mattwj2002: xris I just order some plugs
[23:23:52] mattwj2002: :)
[23:23:57] xris: hmm, I should probably rerun that now that I downgraded my service.. and will be adding a cable card device
[23:23:58] mattwj2002: *terminals
[23:24:12] xris: cool. I did that the other day. long overdue for adding them around my hour.
[23:24:14] xris: house
[23:24:24] xris: wtf. stupid osx. my phone has better autocomplete than this.
[23:24:27] mattwj2002: did it help much?
[23:24:45] xris: don't have them yet. doubt I'll notice much difference. digital is digital. it generally either works or not.
[23:25:13] mattwj2002: I can't wait to have four tuners!
[23:25:14] mattwj2002: :D
[23:25:34] mattwj2002: two of which have cable card access
[23:26:06] mattwj2002: plus with multiplexing
[23:26:19] mattwj2002: it would be possible to record more than 4 programs at once

[23:28:38] mattwj2002: so with the wintv with a cablecard.....does that have to have the channels manually indentified like clearqam?
[23:29:00] mattwj2002: or least some of the channels?

[23:32:23] xris: cesman: how'd you do the channel config in your ceton?
[23:32:39] [R]: mattwj2002: pretty sure you can't do multirec with cablecard
[23:33:25] mattwj2002: really bummer
[23:35:59] mattwj2002: well even two cablecard recordings at once is good
[23:36:30] [R]: i record a lot of crap... and i only have 1.5 tuners... and i seem to do fine
[23:36:42] mattwj2002: half a tuner?
[23:37:03] xris: probably same as me. one is used for actually watching tv?
[23:37:10] [R]: well i have a qam tuner that can only pick up my locals
[23:37:14] xris: ah
[23:37:16] mattwj2002: oh
[23:37:21] [R]: so its more like .1 of a tuner
[23:37:24] [R]: but you get the idea
[23:37:43] mattwj2002: what type of tuners do you have?
[23:37:58] [R]: i hvae an hdpvr and a qam tuner
[23:38:23] mattwj2002: nice
[23:39:36] mattwj2002: I just hope hooking up the card card isn't too difficult
