[00:00:04] [R]: mythfrontend steals focus from mythfrontend?
[00:00:22] bcgrown: whoops
[00:00:25] bcgrown: mythwelcome steals focus
[00:00:34] [R]: dunno, i dont use mythwecleom
[00:00:38] [R]: but i use ratpoison
[00:00:39] [R]: and nothing else
[00:01:46] vbman2 (vbman2!~vbmanis@pool-72-81-22-82.phlapa.east.verizon.net) has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[00:02:04] bcgrown: i wonder if switching to something like that would prevent this issue. the window manager is what keeps track of who gets which events, yes?
[00:03:24] [R]: the iwnodw manager manges the focus
[00:04:51] bcgrown: could I keep XFCE and use something else instead of xfwm?
[00:05:51] [R]: if all your doing is using myth
[00:05:57] [R]: what do you need with a full bloaty bloat like that?
[00:06:14] bcgrown: i just installed mythbuntu and never thought twice about it
[00:06:50] bcgrown: i'd be happy to ditch it to fix this issue though
[00:08:08] bcgrown: all i need to do is automatically start mythtv when the pc boots
[00:10:30] bcgrown: ratpoison sounds good but i'd like to be able to use the mouse
[00:11:46] jpabq: LXDE and XFCE don't really use much more CPU than ratpoison, but they do use more RAM. To avoid CPU hogging, you just need to avoid the heavy weights like Gnome and KDE.
[00:12:41] bcgrown: jpabq: RAM and CPU usage aren't an issue, but annoying focus issues are
[00:12:53] bcgrown: therefore i'd like to get the simplest WM possible... any recommendations?

[00:13:54] jpabq: I use LXDE, *but* I did have to tweak it to not show the taskbar *on top of* myth. I don't use mythwelcome anymore, so I don't know how well it works with that.
[00:14:24] NewBuntu81: Hi All. On cable in the US, up to what channel should you be able to tune to? 121? 119?
[00:14:39] bcgrown: NewBuntu81: analog or digital? my digital goes to 999...
[00:14:57] bcgrown: jpabq: when you say "tweak" do you mean change a checkbox, or spend hours digging in config files?
[00:15:21] jpabq: I modified a config file. I can send it to you, if you want
[00:15:33] NewBuntu81: analog
[00:15:44] bcgrown: jpabq: that'd be great
[00:15:55] jpabq: May not be a problem anymore, though. I saw some commits a month ago that claimed they fixed problems of that nature...
[00:16:38] jpabq: NewBuntu81, then it should go up to 99, typically. Doesn't mean your local cable co offers that many analog channels, though.
[00:17:02] bcgrown: NewBuntu81: dunno, my cable co only goes up to 74. 100+ is digital
[00:17:26] NewBuntu81: right, ok. i put a filter on my line so I won't backfeed to the provider...but i have "overlaid" several channels in the 100's. like 101, 103, 105, 107
[00:17:27] jpabq: A LOT of cable companies are dropping the analog channels, and forcing their customers to go digital.
[00:17:46] NewBuntu81: right, but by law they can't do the local channels
[00:17:58] NewBuntu81: which for me are the first 120
[00:18:01] NewBuntu81: whoops, first 20
[00:18:27] jpabq: Wow. that many locals? Oh, are you including all the religious channels?
[00:18:51] bcgrown: NewBuntu81: this site says they go to 125 http://www.jneuhaus.com/fccindex/cablech.html
[00:19:04] bcgrown (bcgrown!~dave@216-19-189-175.dyn.novuscom.net) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[00:20:02] NewBuntu81: hahaa, um, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16, 17, 18, 20
[00:20:15] NewBuntu81: that's including the 2 community access, and subtracting the religious channels :-)
[00:21:21] jpabq: I only have 8 useful locals.
[00:22:21] NewBuntu81: and i've overlaid a few more local ones from another nearby city from antenna...because CW and FOX show different programs on each of its sister stations. Meaning Fox here shows say Seinfeld, whereas fox in the other nearby city shows Friends.
[00:22:28] NewBuntu81: so it's useful to have the extra channels
[00:24:01] jpabq: I wish I had multiple choices. My local NBC station SUCK! because they feel it necessary to put up a big weather map, and news tracker at the bottom of the screen, just because it is sprinkling 200 miles away.
[00:24:46] NewBuntu81: lol
[00:24:52] NewBuntu81: i live near a state line
[00:25:07] NewBuntu81: states never like to play nice so each has their own lol
[00:25:42] jpabq: I live in the middle of New Mexico, and the station feels like it has to warn me about weather in souther Colorado.
[00:25:53] NewBuntu81: hahaha

[00:56:14] elmojo: does mythtv compile against 2.6.38?
[00:57:40] [R]: are you having problems?
[00:57:45] [R]: myth doesnt compile against the kernel
[00:57:53] [R]: but it does use the v4l headers
[00:59:05] elmojo: and the v4l headers/drivers are part of the kernel
[00:59:26] elmojo: so again if I upgrade to 2.6.38 will MythTV compile?
[01:00:57] [R]: you'll have to try and see
[01:01:09] elmojo: dude, stop trolling
[01:01:20] [R]: lol
[01:01:42] elmojo: if you don't know an answer and incorrectly make statements then shut up
[01:01:52] jpabq: elmojo, I thought it was you that was working on that.... Maybe it was gigem_ ?
[01:02:07] elmojo: it's gigem_
[01:02:31] elmojo: jpabq: playing with the ring buffer code some more
[01:02:46] jpabq: He was having problems, and was talking about Myth itself including some v4l1 header to allow it to continue working.
[01:02:54] elmojo: limited the max read size – seems better but I did see one pause a little earlier
[01:03:24] elmojo: heh, no upgrade to 11.04 for me then until it's fixed
[01:03:33] jpabq: I have always tried to increase it to solve the problem. Maybe that was the wrong direction, since it never really seemed to help.
[01:03:34] mianos: I compiled .24 last night on natty with the 2.6.38 kernel
[01:05:55] elmojo: mianos: thanks
[01:06:53] elmojo: jpabq: the max read size was increased from 640KB to kBufferSize<<2 in the 0.24 release
[01:07:00] elmojo: which should be 1024KB
[01:08:35] jpabq: elmojo, I have always had some issues, but since 0.24 it has seemed worse.
[01:09:54] elmojo: jpabq: try changing "if (readtimeavg < 150 && (uint)readblocksize < (kBufferSize>>2))" in ringbuffer.cpp to used "640 * 1024" instead of "kBufferSize>>2"
[01:10:02] elmojo: and mayabe try so even lower values
[01:10:19] elmojo: should just need to change the backend
[01:11:25] jpabq: elmojo, will do. I am recording tonight, so it will have to wait until tomorrow.
[01:12:29] elmojo: jpabq: one theory is that a larger remote read when the buffer is a little low might become empty while the read is in progress from the disk
[01:12:41] elmojo: so small reads would eliminate that possibility
[01:13:45] jpabq: Seems reasonable.
[01:15:02] elmojo: should be easy to determine if this is happening
[01:20:24] elmojo: [R]: sorry, if I was too harsh on you, it's been a long day
[01:27:50] Beirdo: wagnerrp: nope, done nothing on the SG for mythgallery
[01:27:52] Beirdo: go for it

[02:11:26] [R]: that'd be cool
[02:11:28] [R]: and the point of it is?
[02:12:00] sphery: Funniest part of the one you replied to is his calling the non-Atom systems "expensive fire-breathing systems"... Obviously someone who buys into marketing.
[02:12:10] sphery: (on Atom and VMs)
[02:13:01] sphery: considering I just bought a "fire-breathing" system for $144
[02:14:11] wagnerrp: yeah, a full new system, AMD dual core, GT210, 2GB memory, cheap case and PSU, IR receiver and remote
[02:14:18] wagnerrp: is going to run you all of about $250
[02:14:36] wagnerrp: which is right in line with Atom systems
[02:15:07] sphery: yeah, mine is without the case and PSU and IR receiver/remote
[02:15:28] wagnerrp: and likely onboard video, rather than discrete
[02:15:32] sphery: oh, yeah, that too
[02:15:50] sphery: (since it's a backend, no need for MythTV-useful video)
[02:16:19] sphery: though I did buy a GT220 for $7.99 after $32MIR last week
[02:16:33] wagnerrp: 220? or 210?

[02:18:07] sphery: the $7.99 was a shell shocker
[02:18:50] sphery: (and the GT430 is low-profile, which works for those who buy expensive, small cases--though fans on both cards may be loud)

[03:52:03] wagnerrp: sphery: think there would be any problem with statically loading a file list for mythgallery when you enter, like how mythvideo functions?
[03:52:57] sphery: you should ask Beirdo
[03:52:57] wagnerrp: right now, it does so dynamically as you travel through the menus
[03:53:58] Beirdo: I'd rather have it static, personally
[03:54:20] Beirdo: not sure why we'd want it otherwise other than maybe for a hot-plugged camera
[03:54:52] Beirdo: feel free to mess with it to get it the way ya want, we can always adjust it again
[03:55:14] Beirdo: and, personally, I don't care if we drop the video file support.
[03:55:25] Beirdo: that should be using mythvideo, it's not really gallery
[03:55:40] wagnerrp: right now, im thinking of firing off a thread when you open it to read the root directory, unlock when complete so that can be displayed, and then continue recursing down the filesystem
[03:56:03] Beirdo: sounds reasonable
[03:57:10] Beirdo: just what we needed :) more threads
[03:57:16] Beirdo: hehe
[03:57:23] wagnerrp: well it will be short lived
[03:57:31] wagnerrp: ill have it self-terminate when the load is complete
[03:57:34] Beirdo: consider using a QRunnable
[03:57:47] wagnerrp: i have no idea what a qrunnable is
[03:58:19] Beirdo: it's like a threadlet... that's run in a thread that it gets for a short time from a QThreadPool
[03:58:52] wagnerrp: so rather than have a dedicated thread, it simply hands itself off to the global threadpool?
[03:58:56] Beirdo: something that many of our smaller QThreads should be converted to
[03:58:59] Beirdo: yup
[03:59:12] wagnerrp: seems like something that would be bad for something that needs priority
[03:59:20] Beirdo: it grabs a thread from the global threadpool, hands it back when it's done
[03:59:41] wagnerrp: in the event the threadpool is empty, it blocks?
[03:59:44] Beirdo: well, we have very few threads that need priority changes
[03:59:50] Beirdo: yes
[04:00:00] Beirdo: that's my understanding
[04:00:24] wagnerrp: my other concern is storage on offline backends
[04:00:28] Beirdo: we may need to tweak the size of that threadpool already (defaults to the number of cores, I think)
[04:00:37] wagnerrp: right now, there is no way to tell what backends are connected and available
[04:00:53] wagnerrp: meaning if you have a Photos SG defined on an offline backend, it will block until it times out
[04:01:01] Beirdo: bleh, that needs to be fixed
[04:01:11] wagnerrp: of course its the same issue in mythvideo
[04:01:17] Beirdo: yeah
[04:01:31] wagnerrp: except mythvideo runs on a database table, and that issue only arises during browse mode or scanning
[04:01:48] wagnerrp: wouldnt be too hard to add a command to rattle off the available SlaveBackends
[04:02:17] wagnerrp: since the backend is already recording those for scheduling purposes
[04:02:52] Beirdo: I'm so not in a coding mood right now :)
[04:03:12] wagnerrp: sounds like youre past the ballmer peak
[04:03:19] Beirdo: heh

[04:37:42] wagnerrp: in theory, it should amount to less work and less duplication
[04:37:56] wagnerrp: but in practice, it results in using a method defined as "bad" in the UI engine
[04:38:49] wagnerrp: not to mention i dont think i can actually use it for remote images, meaning i think it would result in a diverged code path

[16:08:52] wagnerrp: toeb: the frontend has never been allowed to upgrade the database
[16:09:23] wagnerrp: Chewie[]: no, the inherent design of mythtv necessitates a several second delay between capture and display

[16:11:12] Chewie[]: wagnerrp: that's the answer to my next question. thanks!
[16:12:16] wagnerrp: jams, toeb: the frontend has been in charge of its own plugin schema revisions
[16:12:32] wagnerrp: but it has always required a special command line flag to allow it to upgrade the primary schema

[16:17:55] Chewie[]: wagnerrp: FYI, tvtime doesn't support ivtv cards, xawtv looks promising.
[16:18:08] toeb: frontend does no longer start since i did the update today :-(

[16:18:25] toeb: it
[16:18:34] wagnerrp: Chewie[]: ivtv cards are mpeg encoders, and add another second of latency through their internal buffers
[16:18:54] wagnerrp: however they do provide framegrabber access on one of the other registered video nodes

[16:24:52] jams: wagnerrp- pretty sure the FE could update the primary schema, that flag was only added around .21. If I recall correctly sphery came up with the patch. Think that is also around the time the prompts and stuff were added. Otherwise it would just update your DB with no warning.
[16:25:23] jams: But i suppose it doesn't really matter
[16:25:31] wagnerrp: ah, well i know it hasnt been willing to do so in recent history

[18:14:17] mycosys: The Mythbuntu team provides updates for MythTV and Mythbuntu package using the Mythbuntu Repos http://mythbuntu.org/repos
[18:14:43] mycosys: long as you have those – just select 0.24 fixes in mythbuntu control center

[18:27:15] mycosys: night
[18:27:29] JEDIDIAH__: file sharing is a basic generic sort of thing. If it's working as expected, you can test it by just using normal desktop tools and apps rather than MythTV. Start up a normal desktop or xterm and try playing stuff back with apps like VLC or mplayer.
[18:28:20] JEDIDIAH__: ssh -X mythtv@brad; vlc /home/media/DVD/Action/Dirty_Harry.vob
[18:28:52] LinuxMarine: I can watch the movies with VLC player with no problem. It is when I try to play in mythtv that it does not work.
[18:28:56] JEDIDIAH__: myth stuff isn't necesarily "myth" stuff.
[18:29:21] JEDIDIAH__: what's in the frontend logs?
[18:31:03] LinuxMarine: I have to check but it is the same machine that I am chatting on at the moment.
[18:32:57] LinuxMarine: Is there something in paticular that I should be looking for?
[18:33:25] JEDIDIAH__: no. there just might be some information in there that would make sense to the dev.
[18:33:28] JEDIDIAH__: devs
[18:33:59] LinuxMarine: ok I will check that out and see where that leads me. Thanks
