[04:18:38] jxself: I recorded something last night (my timezone.) When I got up I deleted the commercials, using lossless transcoding. The job appears to be stuck at 79.7%. It hasn't changed all day. How can I safely stop this? I've gone to Media Library -> Watch Recordings -> Selected the recording -> Pressed "M" -> Went to Job Options and selected stop transcoding bu t the job is still running. Then I tried Information Center -> System Status -> Job Queue->
[04:19:11] wagnerrp: the jobqueue cannot really terminate jobs
[04:19:17] Twigg (Twigg!~darren@66-87-5-6.pools.spcsdns.net) has quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[04:19:41] wagnerrp: all that option does is set a flag in the database, and hope the job is periodically checking the database for changes
[04:19:43] sphery: jxself: now you can kill the job using system tool (i.e. kill)
[04:19:59] wagnerrp: if mythtranscode has deadlocked, it will not self-terminate
[04:21:16] jxself: OK. I killed it. Thanks. :)
[04:21:35] wagnerrp: you will be stuck with a tmp file
[04:21:51] jxself: MythWeb reports exit status 143.
[04:22:16] jxself: Where's the tmp file? I'll go delete it.
[04:22:38] wagnerrp: right next to the recording, with a .tmp extension
[04:22:56] jxself: OIK.
[04:22:59] jxself: er; OK.

[04:27:07] achromat: Anyone know why it takes so long to update the video database?
[04:27:24] wagnerrp: how long is so long?
[04:27:50] achromat: 30mins and its at 25%
[04:28:00] wagnerrp: first time scanning?
[04:28:17] achromat: Yeah.
[04:28:25] wagnerrp: with tens of thousands of files?
[04:28:44] jpabq (jpabq!~jpabq@mythtv/developer/jpabq) has quit (Quit: ZNC - http://znc.sourceforge.net)
[04:29:00] achromat: I accidentally scanned for changes with the drive unhooked.
[04:29:23] achromat: So the db emptied.
[04:29:31] wagnerrp: mythtv needs to hash each new file
[04:29:44] jpabq (jpabq!~jpabq@mythtv/developer/jpabq) has joined #mythtv-users
[04:29:49] wagnerrp: the hash consists of the filesize, and 64KB at the beginning and end
[04:30:02] achromat: Hmm. Makes sense.
[04:30:10] wagnerrp: so while it doesnt have to read the whole file, it still must at least open the file
[04:30:15] wagnerrp: and that takes some amount of time
[04:30:37] achromat: Doesn't it save a backup of the db?
[04:30:43] wagnerrp: perhaps a hundred milliseconds per file
[04:31:04] wagnerrp: no, mythvideo is not designed to handle transient files
[04:31:10] sphery: unless, of course, the file is 128kiB or smaller--then it reads the whole file, or maybe more :)
[04:31:27] wagnerrp: correct
[04:31:45] wagnerrp: but... for tens of thousands of videos, an hour or more is understandable
[04:32:04] wagnerrp: if you have less than that, then you have issues with your filesystem
[04:32:06] sphery: yeah, and 128kiB video files are mostly useless
[04:32:28] sphery: so chances are it's not reading nearly the whole file
[04:32:30] wagnerrp: are these videos mounted over a CIFS share?
[04:32:42] achromat: Yes.
[04:33:00] sphery: (in other words, ignore me--I'm just playing with ifs)
[04:33:31] achromat: Yeah, like I said, I made the mistake of unhooking a hot swapable media drive and then scanning for updates. So the DB was all set for quite a while. Then it scanned and found zero files.
[04:33:39] wagnerrp: are these videos stored on your master backend, and youre saying you have them shared to your frontend over CIFS?
[04:33:56] achromat: Shared on the backend.
[04:34:09] wagnerrp: are you using storage groups?
[04:34:36] achromat: I don't believe so. I never set them up anyway.
[04:35:10] jxself (jxself!~jxself@gnu/chief-webmaster/jxself) has left #mythtv-users ("Support freedom: fsf.org")
[04:35:11] wagnerrp: then stop the scan, go into mythtv-setup (on your backend), and specify the folder as a Videos folder
[04:35:24] wagnerrp: unmount cifs on the frontend
[04:35:36] wagnerrp: and let the scan be passed through over mythproto
[04:35:44] wagnerrp: rather than performed directly by the backend over cifs
[04:35:55] achromat: I know it will work just fine when it is done scanning. My only thought was that if it scans and finds zero files does it really purge the DB?
[04:36:08] wagnerrp: yes, it purges the database
[04:36:17] achromat: Bummer.
[04:37:03] achromat: I think I did set up the videos folder like that.
[04:37:28] achromat: I set it up on the backend in the setup option where you separate them with a :
[04:37:51] wagnerrp: no, there is nowhere in the backend configuration that takes folders divided by a colon
[04:38:02] wagnerrp: in mythtv-setup, you can directly specify multiple directories
[04:38:14] wagnerrp: the field that takes a colon is the frontend file access
[04:38:24] achromat: Yeah, I know the page you're talking about.
[04:38:26] wagnerrp: which has been deprecated by storage groups since 0.22
[04:38:55] achromat: That's just me being lazy.

[04:40:03] achromat: I have 1 folder with many sub-directories that have videos so I just type the top folder in that line. (Forgetting the name of that option at the moment)
[04:40:03] kormoc is now known as kormoc_afk
[04:40:34] achromat: I thought to myself, "set up share groups or type in 1 directory path like I have been in the past"
[04:40:43] wagnerrp: regardless, local file access is planned for removal
[04:40:52] wagnerrp: so at some point, youre going to be required to switch
[04:41:02] wagnerrp: at which point will require a rescan of all content
[04:41:16] achromat: Gotcha. I'm updating it now.
[04:41:18] wagnerrp: now that hash will allow the metadata to be matched up so it is not lost
[04:41:28] wagnerrp: but it just means you'll have to scan twice
[04:46:27] achromat: Does the backend need write permissions to the disk?
[04:48:20] wagnerrp: of course

[05:11:46] jstenback: is it supposed to be possible to record from a slave backend to a directory on the master backend using storage groups, w/o nfs (or whatever) mounting the directory on the slave backend?
[05:12:18] wagnerrp: no, recordings require direct file access
[05:12:30] jstenback: ok
[05:12:38] jstenback: how about commflagging?
[05:12:53] jstenback: on a slave?
[05:14:05] wagnerrp: commflaggin? yes... transcoding? no
[05:17:14] jstenback: ok, thanks
[05:17:29] jstenback: so I have a slave that I use for nothing other than commflagging
[05:18:03] wagnerrp: then you dont have a slave backend
[05:18:05] wagnerrp: you have a jobqueue
[05:18:16] wagnerrp: and as such, you should be running mythjobqueue rather than mythbackend
[05:18:40] jstenback: hmm, never heard of that
[05:18:41] jstenback: ok
[05:18:50] wagnerrp: been around since... 0.21?

[06:24:23] achromat_: The only thing I'm worried about is that I have some .iso's that might not play from a storage group.
[06:24:43] wagnerrp: unencrypted ISOs will play from storage groups just fine
[06:24:51] wagnerrp: encrypted ones... not so much
[06:25:02] wagnerrp: so that means ones made with 'dd' wont do it
[06:25:25] wagnerrp: youve got to use a real ripping tool that decrypts and then generates a new ISO
[06:25:41] deegan: wagnerrp: so it's not related, good to know. then i can continue looking. :)
[06:26:01] achromat_: Mine should be okay, but I have a few that I did not rip myself.
[06:26:19] achromat_: So I have no clue what tool was used to rip them.
[06:26:38] wagnerrp: deegan: the only thing that could cause that behavior would be some third party program managing the operation of mythfrontend
[06:26:47] wagnerrp: if you are using mythbuntu, they have wrapper scripts to do that
[06:26:58] wagnerrp: achromat_: we cant help you with such files

[06:32:07] justinh: leaving that up to users removes a large burden from the project, legality-wise

[06:37:20] wagnerrp: nikita is still on the air?
[06:37:28] achromat_: The remake?
[06:37:36] wagnerrp: i missed a couple episodes, and stopped recording
[06:37:37] justinh: grrr, why isn't all cover art / posters the same size?!
[06:37:46] sphery: or the quote from CSI: Miami Antivirus Squad: "I think he's just been pkilled."
[06:38:00] sphery: as he takes off his sunglasses
[06:38:17] justinh: whatever you do, don't ever read Dan Brown's book 'Digital Fortress'. Oh boy
[06:38:45] sphery: heh, that sounds like the kind of book to read because of the warning
[06:39:00] justinh: my wife keeps buying me his books. doesn't seem to matter one iota how many times I deride his work
[06:39:26] sphery: heh
[06:39:40] justinh: pacy, but utter *trash*
[06:39:50] sphery: I actually read all the books by a certain author, even though I do so specifically to find fault with them.
[06:39:56] justinh: heheh
[06:40:07] sphery: (They're my guilty-pleasure "conspiracy theory" books.)
[06:40:31] justinh: been reading a lot recently. Got through 2 this week :-) I do a lot of skipping, mind
[06:40:43] sphery: wow... train time or something?
[06:41:01] justinh: no, mostly insomnia in the shape of a coughing baby in the next room
[06:41:10] sphery: ahhh, that works, too
[06:41:22] justinh: it's clearing up now, thankfully
[06:41:29] sphery: was going to ask if they're print or e-books
[06:41:49] sphery: glad he's getting better
[06:41:49] justinh: I tried e-books on my phone. I don't think I'll be making a habit of it
[06:42:05] wagnerrp: mmm... no one does David Caruso like Bruce Campbell
[06:42:40] justinh: sphery: aye, nothing can make you lose sleep like a sick baby – regardless of any noise they make late at night ;)

[06:45:13] justinh: walking, we're assured, is not far off. God help us :)
[06:45:39] sphery: heh, then it's non-stop for 17 years

[06:53:17] justinh: hmm. even trying to clip these artwork images isn't enough. they vary in size too much :-\
[06:53:49] justinh: tmdb & tvdb should *insist* on images being exactly the right aspect
[06:54:08] justinh: I know their guidelines do, but maybe some testing is in order :)
[06:54:14] achromat_: Yeah, I don't think they police it too much.
[06:57:28] sphery: justinh: btw, thought of you while watching a Nova episode, today. Was about power production and reducing carbon emissions, and they kept showing a close-up of an electrical wall socket--complete with spots on it and gunk in the embossed writing
[06:57:55] wagnerrp: spots?
[06:58:06] justinh: 666x666? WTH kind of size is that?
[06:58:08] sphery: could have made it look much better with a towel, a little bit of cleaner, and 10s
[06:58:31] sphery: spots of dirt, like dried liquid or something
[06:58:31] justinh: heheh
[06:58:40] wagnerrp: justinh: its the size of evil
[06:59:08] justinh: like er.. 400x578.. that's surely not a cover aspect either
[07:00:10] justinh: and darn anybody who warps cover images to hell!
[07:02:25] justinh: erm.. why are people scanning *whole* box covers? I mean, if not for reproduction of said covers. Isn't it enough for most purposes just to see the front?
[07:06:02] wagnerrp: in some cases, the whole box is useful
[07:06:15] wagnerrp: i bought a copy of the road warrior that was apparently previously used
[07:06:28] wagnerrp: and the previous owner had use the cover for red2blu
[07:06:42] justinh: ah
[07:06:53] wagnerrp: but for tmdb... its completely pointless
[07:07:03] justinh: didn't say I saw the scans in tmdb :)
[07:07:09] wagnerrp: since its designed for media center software
[07:07:19] wagnerrp: oh, just google images or some such?
[07:07:44] justinh: actual cover images sites
[07:10:44] wagnerrp: but im sure im the rare user that has to legitimately replace a lost insert
[07:11:19] wagnerrp: as opposed to the one rolling their own "free" DVD collection

[14:04:50] skd5aner: justinh: the one I'm sure you are following day and night
[14:05:02] justinh: am I? Oh I hadn't realised
[14:05:14] skd5aner: It's a requirement I've been told
[14:05:16] ** justinh is something of a republican **
[14:05:20] skd5aner: ;)
[14:06:00] skd5aner: wait till the queen here's about this lack of allegiance.... tisk tisk
[14:06:10] skd5aner: doh – "hears"
[14:06:28] justinh: back to Facebook, with language like that ;-)
[14:06:55] skd5aner: stupid fingers and their dumb finger brains
[14:07:05] justinh: actually, no. FB speak would be more like "wait til the queen here's about you're lack of alleedgeance"
[14:07:07] skd5aner: intercepting my smart human brain signals
[14:08:16] justinh: I really don't see what all the fuss is about
[14:08:30] justinh: and we're not being given the day off next Friday

[14:09:20] justinh: skd5aner: most of us could literally not give a damn
[14:09:37] justinh: our media are all over it too, and we're frankly SICK of hearing about it
[14:10:24] justinh: it was different when chaz & di got wed, IIRC
[14:10:53] skd5aner: it's because we don't live with it – it's easy to be "woohed" (sp?) by something so foreign and different than if you've lived with it for 1000 years
[14:11:01] justinh: Prince Phillip is cool though. He says whatever he likes lol

[14:13:00] skd5aner: I probably care just as equally less than you
[14:13:28] justinh: Lady Di was about a generation ago.. and when it came to the news of her death.. I'll never forget what I was doing when I was told
[14:13:52] justinh: that news ruined a perfectly pleasant Sunday morning – what our tabloids would call a 'romp'
[14:14:15] justinh: further deepened my resentment of the royals, when my GFs mother burst in to tell us
[14:14:46] skd5aner: so – you were, uh... "romping" some chick when her mom burst in on you?
[14:15:06] skd5aner: to tell you that?!
[14:15:17] justinh: yup. and she stood there, all serious & said Princess Di had died. GF got out of bed to watch TV
[14:15:17] skd5aner: yea – that'd taint my opinion too
[14:15:57] justinh: that was bad enough but there was pretty much *nothing* on TV or radio for a whole 24 hours because of that
[14:16:03] skd5aner: yea – I remember when it happened to, because I had a journalism class the next day and that's all we talked about – the media's coverage of it

[20:22:18] Nede: thank you J-e-f-f-A for help me!!!!
[20:22:32] J-e-f-f-A: Nede: The backend does the capturing of the recording, and writes it to disk. After that, it's more-or-less a fileserver. The frontend does the 'hard work' for playback.

[20:23:46] J-e-f-f-A: Nede: Granted, that's an over-simplification, as the backend has LOTS of stuff to do (scheduling), but the point is that it doesn't up-mix to 5.1, etc, the frontend does that at playback.

[20:26:40] Nede: unless you have a framegrabber, but AFAIK, the nuppelvideo recorder will not do upmixing
[20:26:46] Nede: oops...
[20:27:00] Nede: Thank you very much, this channel is really full of very competent people!! Congratulations to prepare!
[20:27:44] Nede: J-e-f-f-A, for my problem?
[20:27:49] J-e-f-f-A: I have a somewhat similar issue with my son's frontend – He's got an old Boston Acoustics 4.1 system, and I couldn't get Myth to down-mix 5.1 to 4.1... I didn't spend much time on it.
[20:28:33] Shadow__X: J-e-f-f-A: add another speaker
[20:28:35] Shadow__X: problem solved
[20:28:40] J-e-f-f-A: I think I spent about 15–20 mins trying to get it to 'behave', but it would insist on using a center channel, which wasn't there. ;-)
[20:28:45] J-e-f-f-A: ^^ hehehe Shadow__X  ;-)
[20:30:57] Nede: J-e-f-f-A, but that happens to me: I open the live tv and all is well, change channels every 15 seconds and I have a stammer. If I remove and remit up-mixer okay until the next channel change.
[20:30:57] Nede: The same hardware was not the first!

[20:37:27] J-e-f-f-A: Gee, why does my version string end in "-dirty" ? – is it because I've customized mythlcdserver?
[20:37:32] Nede: J-e-f-f-A, MythTV Version  : v0.24-249-g4fe108c MythTV Branch  : fixes/0.24
[20:38:52] J-e-f-f-A: Nede: Ok, so you're running 0.24-fixes, and not trunk. That's good. ;-) I would join the mythtv-users mailing list and send a message out with the details- you'll get help. ;-)
[20:39:14] wagnerrp: so theres someone on the mailing list wanting to know how they can edit recordings
[20:39:42] wagnerrp: for the purpose of creating a highlight reel of the royal wedding to put on a dvd
[20:39:49] J-e-f-f-A: Nede: Because, although there are 177 people in this channel, many are 'idle', and obviously not here 24x7
[20:39:58] wagnerrp: what i dont understand is... why people care?
[20:40:07] J-e-f-f-A: Who's getting married?

[20:40:33] wagnerrp: british royal family, apparently
[20:40:39] wagnerrp: had to look it up monday
[20:40:52] J-e-f-f-A: wagnerrp: Yeah, I forgot to turn the sarcasm tag on/off. ;-)
[20:40:54] wagnerrp: instead of Castle, there was some news story on some couple getting married
[20:41:43] wagnerrp: i was curious to know why my 'precious stories' were preempted by the wedding of two people i had no idea who they even were

[20:45:47] Nede: J-e-f-f-A, No matter, I am a hard work that you have no idea! Italian to English google sob!
[20:47:41] J-e-f-f-A: Nede: Hehehehe... ;-) I can't speak a single word in Italian... I took Spanish in the 10th grade, but that was 27 years ago... <eek, I'm an old fart!>
[20:48:39] Nede: Now I'm reading the mail list mythtv, I had never actually taken into account to use it. I thought that was the best place irc .....
[20:49:12] Nede: eh-eh-eh!!! J-e-f-f-A
[20:52:20] J-e-f-f-A: Nede: We're a diverse group, and the guy that played the biggest role in the Audo re-write is from Austrailia, and he's not in the channel now as he's probably sleeping... ;-) So the mailing list might be a better way to get a direct response.

[20:57:19] Nede: What does it mean? Would you like to receive list mail batched in a daily digest?

[22:36:21] keith: but just seeing if anyone has suggestions on best supported chipset, etc
[22:36:51] keith: wow the 950q's are fairly priced
[22:37:32] wagnerrp: theyre pretty expensive IMHO

[22:38:25] keith: usb ones?
[22:38:47] keith: yea how good is the dvb driver for hdhr?
[22:39:02] keith: i considered that, but then its another device to power, anoother ethernet port, etc
[22:39:18] wagnerrp: from what i understand, only about half implemented and pretty broken
[22:40:04] wagnerrp: i was under the impression it was written to support the author's specific application need, rather than general use
[22:40:21] keith: yea so dont want to use hdhr yet :(
[22:40:44] keith: honestly, im going to be using tvheadend and not even mythtv, but i figured better chance someone unidle here ;)
[22:40:47] wagnerrp: this is for tvheadend?
[22:40:50] wagnerrp: yeah...
[22:41:12] keith: trying to get tvheadend working on my qnap, since we got xbmc ported to the atv2
[22:41:13] wagnerrp: might be worth adding support for the first party HDHR library
[22:41:17] keith: just for shits and giggles.
[22:41:25] wagnerrp: but that would be a whole other project
[22:41:47] keith: yup. i would love to use mythtv on my qnap, but i fear it's a little too intensive for my purposes
[22:42:14] wagnerrp: the scheduler and guide data handling is really what kills you on those underpowered systems
[22:42:19] keith: but thats why i'm specifically asking for a dvb atsc/qam card, instead of just a card that supports v4l2
[22:42:37] keith: well, this is a c2d 2.8ghz qnap, but i like running other things on it :)

[22:46:33] wagnerrp: mythbackend really doesnt need a whole lot of resources
[22:46:57] wagnerrp: my backend is currently running about 80MB of memory, with some 26min of CPU time in the last week and a half
[22:47:05] wagnerrp: it really just comes down to the scheduler runes
[22:47:26] wagnerrp: anyway... do understand the limitations of cablecard on an unlicensed program
[22:47:36] wagnerrp: you will only be able to capture the 'copy freely' channels
[22:47:48] Shadow__X: also hdhr prime is the one for cable card
[22:47:54] wagnerrp: which would be the same ones as you could over firewire from a STB
[22:48:54] wagnerrp: if tvheadend worked with the native libraries, then it would not be difficult to add support for the HDHRP
[22:49:22] wagnerrp: the only big difference the SD people had to make was how tuning was handled
[22:49:48] wagnerrp: theyve been running the HDHRP on mythtv for over a year now
[22:50:08] Shadow__X: the hdhrp is out now?
[22:50:12] wagnerrp: no
