[00:26:42] adac: Hi guys. Can anyone point me to a mythtv box. Should rund backen and frontend on one machine. Should be able to play full hd and should have (full) HD satelite tv card
[00:31:48] Beirdo: I like watching IRT: Deadliest Roads
[00:32:10] Beirdo: watching idiots driving in the Himalayan Mountains in India
[00:38:18] kormoc: adac, I like mac mini's personally
[00:38:38] kormoc: Beirdo, but but but they're canadian heros! Moose carry them from place to place in honor!
[00:38:55] poodyp (poodyp!~poodyp@ip174-67-200-142.oc.oc.cox.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:39:06] Beirdo: hehe
[00:39:25] Beirdo: yeah, it's not the truck drivers in particular being idiots
[00:39:47] Beirdo: it's the people trying to drive around and through them
[00:41:14] adac: kormoc, I agree it seems to be a really cool box :) Do you have one?
[00:41:30] kormoc: I do
[00:41:55] adac: kormoc, do you use it as fronted only?
[00:42:14] kormoc: Nope. It's my frontend, backend, and mythweb box
[00:42:36] kormoc: I use external storage via usb to record to, and I use a HVPVR as my capture device, which is usb
[00:43:58] adac: kormoc, Oh i see! Is usb2.0 fast enough for hd?
[00:44:06] adac: 1080i
[00:44:10] kormoc: plenty
[00:44:14] adac: kk
[00:45:03] kormoc: digital streams are under 20 megabits per second, usb goes upto 480 megabits per second
[00:45:32] adac: kormoc, ok that should work then :)
[00:46:14] adac: kormoc, Whcih box would you consider to have mythtv hd frontend only?
[00:47:17] kormoc: if I was going to buy another box, it'd be another mini. It's powerful enough to run commflagging on/etc when not in use as a frontend and practically silent even under high load
[00:48:27] adac: kormoc, I understand. Yes the apple mini looks fantastic indeed. But is not that cheap of course ;)
[00:49:33] kormoc: true enough, but money well spent imho
[00:50:14] kormoc: another point is the mini has enough cpu power to play back things VDPAU can't handle, so I don't have to worry about what media I want to play when. it just works
[00:50:57] adac: kormoc, BUt you run linux on the box, right?
[00:51:04] kormoc: Yes, I do
[00:51:49] adac: Ah i understand VDPAU is the hd driver for nividia
[00:52:25] kormoc: Aye. So when I play h264 content, the cpu basically doesn't do anything
[00:53:19] Beirdo: just USB interrupts :)
[00:53:52] adac: kormoc, Ok what alternatives do i hvae on the HD PVR card? Are tehre any other cheaper solutions?
[00:54:26] kormoc: Not that I know of
[00:54:29] adac: Mean i just would need external tv card right? I wud not need a whole PVR, odr would I?
[00:55:12] kormoc: You need a cable box with a HDPVR, yes
[00:55:24] kormoc: (Cable or satellite box, aye)
[00:57:18] adac: kormoc,ok I see!
[00:57:38] adac: whcih configuration does your mac mini have?
[00:58:31] adac: Just saw that there are lots of configs: http://www.google.de/products?hl=de&q=mac . . . =0CEcQrQQwAg
[00:58:52] kormoc: Everything at defaults other then ram. I selected the 4 gigs ram upgrade
[00:59:26] kormoc: just make sure you get one with Nvidia graphics. Older ones had onboard intel graphics and those don't work too well
[00:59:51] adac: kormoc, kk!
[01:00:27] adac: kormoc, is Full HD memory expensive?
[01:01:35] kormoc: Not really. I use around 1.4 gigs of ram but I like having more available incase things change (themes that are more memory hungry, etc)
[01:02:37] adac: yeah right, having some memory unused is always a good idea
[01:02:38] adac: ;)
[01:04:39] adac: kormoc, so you remote control mythtv then via the HDPVR remote control?
[01:05:19] adac: i mean switching channels
[01:05:20] kormoc: I have a microsoft MCE USB remote combo that comes with a usb remote receiver
[01:05:35] kormoc: I use usb to control my satellite box
[01:06:29] adac: kormoc, ahh is one of those: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MCE_Remote i see
[01:06:48] kormoc: Aye
[01:09:37] adac: Cool thing! :) Ok I guess now I have all information I need.... Guess now I need to have a look at my bank account

[10:50:32] antgel: lyricnz: well, yes, but where do i go from here? i thought of running memtest86+ first, but i'm not sure if it's reliable. and as for debugging cpu problems, i'm clueless

[10:51:54] lyricnz: depends on your mb

[16:19:12] ubuntu_: I also have another disk WD 1TB which I will be using as the OS/recordings hdd.. I would like to use LVM on this device as to add HDD space later.. considering adding a 500G I already have to it once its formated and the data is copied off
[16:20:17] wagnerrp: why would you use LVM to add storage?

[16:20:54] ubuntu_: just to make it appear as one drive
[16:21:03] ubuntu_: simplicity..
[16:21:03] wagnerrp: why does it need to appear as one drive?
[16:21:22] ubuntu_: doesn't really need to, is there a draw back to doing it via LVM?
[16:21:23] wagnerrp: simplicity is to have multiple independent drives, and let mythtv and storage groups load balance between them
[16:21:48] wagnerrp: that way, you dont get the fragmentation issues from recording multiple simultaneous shows to a single partition
[16:22:02] wagnerrp: and you dont get the reliability issues that losing one drive in an LVM takes out the /whole thing/
[16:22:03] ubuntu_: would you expect better performance this way
[16:22:04] ubuntu_: ok
[16:22:20] ubuntu_: hmm I like your points..
[16:22:34] ubuntu_: but if I lose the 1TB I'll still be losing my OS :-\
[16:23:15] wagnerrp: so partition off the first 20GB of both drives
[16:23:19] ubuntu_: have you ever used an SSD for os?
[16:23:20] wagnerrp: and set it up as an mdadm mirror

[16:23:43] wagnerrp: as long as you have sufficient memory, an SSD for an OS is only going to help on boot
[16:23:43] ubuntu_: will that mirror remain bootable?
[16:23:59] wagnerrp: after that, everything you are going to use for normal purposes will remain cached in memory
[16:24:12] wagnerrp: the only thing an SSD would really help with as far as mythtv is concerned is the database
[16:24:23] wagnerrp: and theres not enough access to that to warrant the cost of one
[16:24:35] wagnerrp: especially if you keep your storage and OS disk separate
[16:24:35] ubuntu_: yeah kind of what i figured
[16:24:43] ubuntu_: brb c-rolls
[16:25:08] wagnerrp: MDADM arrays will not be bootable
[16:25:16] wagnerrp: but for a mirror, either disk in the array will be bootable
[16:25:21] wagnerrp: and the disk is read only on boot
[16:25:49] wagnerrp: so you boot off one disk far enough to load the kernel
[16:25:59] wagnerrp: and the kernel sets up the array and pivots onto it
[16:26:44] wagnerrp: if you set it up right, your OS partition and MBR will be mirrored, and the system can boot off either disk
[16:28:46] ubuntu_: i like the sound of that
[16:30:06] ubuntu_: so another question, going back to the raid5 config.. if i set this raid5 up via liveCD how hard will it be to get it back once I pull all the data off my 1TB, wipe it, and install linux to it?

[23:49:17] antgel: where to start debugging? NB also gone from debian lenny to squeeze
[23:49:21] antgel: (if that matters)
[23:49:24] antgel: any tips?
[23:50:14] sphery: I think that only the themes in the MythTV myththemes package were made available to 0.24-fixes, so far: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/ . . . 65470#465470
[23:50:28] antgel: (VDPAU slim by the way)
[23:50:33] Shadow__X: iamlindoro: the blue abstract theme
[23:50:39] iamlindoro: Shadow__X, Is available in the downloads
[23:50:42] sphery: I don't know his plan, but Captain_Murdoch is planning to verify compatibility before putting others in 0.24-fixes
[23:50:50] iamlindoro: Shadow__X, in both the .24 and trunk downloader
[23:50:53] ** antgel reads http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU#Troubleshooting **
[23:51:15] iamlindoro: (At least, it was in the downloads before .24 even came out)
[23:51:24] iamlindoro: but maybe it got pulled for some reason

[23:52:15] wagnerrp: i wonder how difficult it would be to split out MainServer into a library, and create a new mythfileserver for just storage group access for tunerless slaves
[23:52:32] Shadow__X: iam right but, is it supposed to be available in the theme chooser? because for mine it isnt
[23:52:39] sphery: wagnerrp: that's part of the backend split plan
[23:52:46] iamlindoro: Shadow__X, The theme chooser *is* the downloader
[23:53:06] wagnerrp: i mean right now, since im already trying to allow modular handlers
[23:53:14] iamlindoro: Even before .24 blue-abstract was present in the downloader/chooser
[23:53:21] sphery: I think we should just do the splitting :)
[23:53:24] iamlindoro: it's possible it hasn't been approved to .24, but it's certainly in the downloader
[23:53:56] Shadow__X: yeah when do menu show downloadable themes i dont see blue abstract
[23:55:17] Shadow__X: am i doint something wrong then?

[23:57:05] sphery: should be added/approved "soon"
[23:57:21] sphery: the process is still being defined, though
[23:57:23] sphery: so taking a bit
[23:57:36] Shadow__X: btw thanks for your awesome themes. The other day i was showing someone mythtv and when they saw the graphite theme. They where pretty impressed
