[03:01:26] skd5aner: Can the telnet control socket send near-realtime info back, like playback position, what's playing, etc (similiar to what's sent to an LCD)?
[03:01:36] wagnerrp: what telnet control socket?
[03:01:56] skd5aner: always "technical"
[03:02:02] skd5aner: "frontend control socket"
[03:02:03] wagnerrp: :)
[03:02:11] wagnerrp: you use the telnet application against that

[03:03:14] wagnerrp: check out mythremctl.py on the wiki for an example of how to do that kind of access over the control socket
[03:03:51] wagnerrp: that reminds me, i need to update the wiki copy for 0.24

[03:03:57] skd5aner: [R]: yea – there's also something that foobum has put together called MDD, which is a supliment to mythdroid that sites between the frontend and mythlcdserver and does the same thing to send that data back to an android device in real time

[03:04:18] [R]: well if you know how to do it..
[03:04:22] wagnerrp: skd5aner: no, looks like its just 'quert location'
[03:04:33] wagnerrp: if youre in playback, it will give you playback status
[03:04:42] skd5aner: ah, so it's a bit dynamic?
[03:04:45] wagnerrp: in the NVP anyway
[03:04:53] wagnerrp: you get nothing from mythbrowser or mythmusic
[03:04:57] skd5aner: what about something like mythmusic
[03:04:57] skd5aner: ok
[03:05:06] [R]: i need an LCD for my backend
[03:05:12] [R]: so i know what its doing when its turned on
[03:05:15] wagnerrp: none that i know of
[03:05:27] wagnerrp: maybe it does, i dont know if ive ever actually tested it
[03:05:46] wagnerrp: also note that the current implementation in mythremctl.py is /bad/
[03:05:57] skd5aner: wagnerrp: cool, I was asking around earlier in regards to a project I might take on, but definitely want to leverage as much existing work as I can
[03:06:01] wagnerrp: updating the status once a second, and querying several statistics each time
[03:06:04] wagnerrp: its very laggy
[03:06:51] skd5aner: who wrote mythremctl.py?
[03:07:19] ** wagnerrp looks at the page **
[03:07:29] skd5aner: yea, der – I see it now
[03:07:55] skd5aner: looks interesting
[03:09:05] skd5aner: I was mentioning earlier – I've got a remote, that can interface with 2-way RS232... but obviously a direct 2-way interface to MythTV via RS232 doesn't exist, but perhaps some kind of translator to the control socket could work
[03:10:09] skd5aner: it would be nice if I could have the touch display on the remote know exactly where it is in the menus, ability to display what's playing/length/etc
[03:11:06] wagnerrp: sounds more like an old PDA
[03:11:09] skd5aner: since the control socket could query that, I would just have to write the wrapper it...
[03:11:19] skd5aner: wagnerrp: yea, it almost EXACTLY is
[03:11:38] skd5aner: Unfortunately, it's not IP based (although the manufacture has one that is)
[03:11:39] wagnerrp: old phillips pronto?
[03:12:06] skd5aner: Nevo Q50 http://www.mynevo.com/html.php?page_id=345 w/ a NevoConnect – http://www.mynevo.com/html.php?page_id=347
[03:12:18] skd5aner: In fact, I believe the OS is Windows CE based
[03:12:53] wagnerrp: ah, so its designed more for home automation systems
[03:13:26] skd5aner: Well, it can handle home automation tasks, sure
[03:14:14] skd5aner: but I wouldn't say that's its primary aim per say
[03:14:37] skd5aner: I've had it for a couple years, but just pulled it out of the box last week to finally work on
[03:14:43] skd5aner: (long story)
[03:15:35] skd5aner: regardless – thought it would be interesting if the remote was "smart" enough to know the context of what it's controlling, rather than what you typically have to do with with universal remotes of these kind, like harmony remotes...
[03:16:03] skd5aner: which is assume that it knows where it is based on the last button you hit on the remote and that nothing else could possibly control the device
[03:16:51] skd5aner: wagnerrp: here's some examples of some widgets a guy came up with – http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/forums/viewpost.cgi?991266
[03:18:14] skd5aner: wagnerrp: but it works GREAT without the "smarts" as an IR remote which has process flow – Program a button to the Live TV jump point, change screens that give buttons useful to that function, go into mythmusic, so a screen of button useful to that, etc
[03:18:31] n0tk (n0tk!~n0tk@216.160.42.30) has quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[03:18:46] mzb_ is now known as mzb
[03:18:49] wagnerrp: so its an activity-based remote
[03:19:05] skd5aner: however, if I don't use the jumppoint buttons to do so, and just navigate the menus with up/down/left/right/select (or use a different device), then of course the remote has no clue that it should offer up those contextual screens
[03:19:25] skd5aner: wagnerrp: yes, in it's current form
[03:20:40] skd5aner: wagnerrp: well, in all forms...
[03:21:32] skd5aner: wagnerrp: but, the additional NevoConnect can allow 2-way communications back to the remote (hence the desire to be able to perhaps leverage the frontend control socket-to-RS232)
[03:22:23] dgillies (dgillies!~dgillies@wavejumper.outer-rim.org) has left #mythtv-users ("Eaten by a grue")
[03:22:24] skd5aner: the only home automation functionallity built into the remote itself is that it's got a z-wave transceiver built into the remote to send signals to HA devices that leverage that standard
[03:22:30] skd5aner: which, I have none of
[03:22:44] skd5aner: It uses RF to talk to the NevoConnect
[03:23:54] skd5aner: I'm really happy with the remote – burned through 3 harmonys and an RC5 remote over the past 6 years – and have been using keyboard for the past year

[04:37:12] jgeboski: putting it through the capture card assuming I get hdpvr, I'm worried that the resolution will get messed up some how
[04:37:25] k_ross_: the hd-pvr can capture 1080i and 720p (as well as standard definition sources). there is a very slight loss of quality when capturing via an hd-pvr, but you wouldn't notice it unless you compared side by side. i'm very happy with mine.
[04:38:03] jgeboski: k_ross: alright, that's what I was wondering

[13:49:26] merfy_: thanks skd5aner , i am totaly new to that. What are the diffs between analog and digital devices?which should i prefer?

[13:51:37] merfy_: greece
[13:52:10] skd5aner: what's your source (cable, over the air, satelite)?
[13:52:38] merfy_: via antenna , probably over the air?
[13:53:03] merfy_: nor cable or satelite.Even if i might use sat in future.
[13:53:46] skd5aner: Do you know if Greece has gone completely digital broadcast (DVB) or do they still use analog (PAL)?
[13:53:53] merfy_: I think nowdays , the signal is changing from analog to digital.
[13:54:07] skd5aner: Yea, from wikipedia it looks like it started in 2008 and goes through 2015
[13:54:31] skd5aner: For analog, you'd want a card capable of tuning PAL signals
[13:54:40] skd5aner: for digital, you'd want a card capable of tuning DVB-T signals
[13:55:07] merfy_: so i will go for the dvb-t
[13:55:38] skd5aner: So long as the stations in your area are broadcasting digital, that's what I'd recommend
[13:55:53] merfy_: in the list , there are dvb-s,dvb-c etc what the diff?
[13:56:08] skd5aner: S = Satellite, C=Cable
[13:56:18] skd5aner: T = Terrestrial (aka, over the air)
[13:57:08] merfy_: aha , is there any hybrid such as S+T ?
[13:57:54] skd5aner: likely not
[13:58:07] Gibby_away is now known as Gibby
[13:58:40] merfy_: So , for future sat use , i must have a second device , right?
[13:58:47] skd5aner: There are hybrid analog and digtal ones thouh
[13:59:38] skd5aner: Well, truthfully, most providers in the world won't allow you to directly use an "S" card, unless they provide you with a CAM... I'm completely unfamiliar with satellite offerings in greece
[14:00:18] Digdilem: in the uk, there is freesat, which provides a large amount of un-encrypted channels over dvb-s so no cam is needed
[14:00:31] skd5aner: so, most people who have satellite will get a standard "box" from their sat. provider and have to record out of the analog outputs on that – either HD via component (with an HD-PVR) or SD via some other output
[14:00:40] Digdilem: i have 2xdvb-s pci tuners and 2xdvb-t usb tuners (because I ran out of pci slots)
[14:00:59] skd5aner: Digdilem: thanks, I'm completely in the dark about that kind of stuff – us folks in the US aren't quite a lucky to have that option
[14:01:08] Digdilem: :(
[14:01:37] Digdilem: i know germany and holland have similar setups which i can pickup from here, but not much use to me as I only speak english.
[14:01:37] skd5aner: Not saying wthere might not be a FTA channel here or there, but from the very limited info I've heard, it's basically not worth it to try
[14:04:47] JEDIDIAH__: freesat in the US is pretty much like the lamer broadcast channels, mostly spanish channels and religious channels.
[14:05:18] JEDIDIAH__: plus anyone you mention this stuff to is bound to just mistake you for a satellite cable pirate.
[14:06:09] JEDIDIAH__: awareness of (legal) free satellite TV is very low in the US.
[14:07:37] Digdilem: that's a shame.
[14:07:59] merfy_: as matter the dvb-t devices , what should i check?
[14:08:10] Digdilem: where I am, the dvb-t signal is incredibly weak due to lots of hills, and there's no cable out here, so freesat is the only option I have. I'm lucky.
[14:08:34] Digdilem: merfy_, that they work under linux. a lot of the cheap usb sticks from china are very hit and miss
[14:08:49] merfy_: i am planning for a pci
[14:08:59] merfy_: but as i see , there are too many
[14:09:17] Digdilem: hauppuage are generally well regarded, and ebay's a good source. again, check model for linux support before buying.
[14:09:40] Digdilem: that said, linux has pretty good support for most branded stuff now

[17:22:52] Chiwauwa: I've pasted a snippet of my mythfrontend.log here: http://mythtv.pastebin.com/Qc8FXqm7 covering the frontend freeze issue on 0.24. I is just a test system, so I haven't bother with getting the audio up and running. Do you see any hints to why the playback stops. It is the same situation on two frontends – one is a remote one and the other one on the same computer as the backend.
[17:23:17] Chiwauwa: the issue that I talked about yesterday ...

[19:21:44] skd5aner: the old artwork still shows
[19:22:05] RDV_Linux: skd5aner: The area where that seems to be an issue is when people mix storage groups and duplicate local paths fopr images.
[19:22:21] skd5aner: RDV_Linux: that was my theory...
[19:22:42] skd5aner: was just typing up that I have just started using SGs for videos, but continue to use he default local paths for artwork
[19:22:58] skd5aner: but I have not tried to setup storage groups for the artwork at all yet
[19:23:12] skd5aner: Not sure if they are set to a default path or something
[19:23:43] RDV_Linux: skd5aner: On an offending video use Mythvideo to reset the metadata then press "w" to refresh it. If it works then the path in the Mythvideo record for the non-working image was not set correctly for some reason.
[19:23:58] skd5aner: I assumed, that if I do setup some SGs for artwork, that it might resolve the issue, just haven't considered doing it yet
[19:24:35] skd5aner: RDV_Linux: thanks, I'll give that a test a little later today
[19:25:07] skd5aner: I was just fiddling right after the upgrade because I was excited for the feature, but after trying on 3 vidoes, I realized it was't working "as-is"
[19:25:08] RDV_Linux: skd5aner: You would still need to refresh the video's metadata as MythVideo would still have records with incorrect (non-storage) group paths.
[19:25:27] wagnerrp: christ... someone wants to run a backend on their new Apple TV
[19:25:46] skd5aner: RDV_Linux: ahhh... so, perhaps all I need to do is press W and it should update it?
[19:26:06] RDV_Linux: skd5aner: The issue I am referring to is not a functional issue with Mythvideo it is that the records have some bad image paths.
[19:26:27] skd5aner: How would they have gotten "bad"?
[19:27:04] RDV_Linux: skd5aner: Try the metadata reset first to make sure you have at least one way to fixc the issue. Then try just a "w" to see if that is even faster.
[19:27:21] skd5aner: will do, can't test quite yet but I'll give both a shot
[19:27:46] RDV_Linux: skd5aner: May have gone bad when you had a mix of storage groups and local settings perhaps.
[19:28:19] skd5aner: RDV_Linux: perhaps, but I've never even attempted to setup storage groups for artwork, so I'm not sure why it just doesn't try the local setting

[20:36:38] wagnerrp: yes, like storage for each

[21:15:59] iamlindoro: drindt: OK. I understand it may not seem trivial, but unfortunately the first step any of us is likely to ask you to make is to upgrade to our current release
[21:16:09] iamlindoro: Keep it in mind all you wish, you'll need to do it for us to help you :)
[21:16:49] drindt: iamlindoro: i develop software myself so i know about your meanings ;)
[21:17:16] dustybin: iamlindoro: what kind of storage / RAID setup do you use?
[21:17:17] drindt: but its a bad time for me to rebuild the rpms now between after work and go to bed phase :D

[21:46:24] iamlindoro: front and back
[21:46:28] justinh: I generally consider it good practise to stop mythbackend first

[21:54:11] skd5aner: iamlindoro: I want to make sure I actually read you right... you want me to go and do a replace on the metadata table and take out the full path and just leave the file name (directly in the DB)?
[21:54:36] iamlindoro: Presuming the images are all in the root of their respect storage group paths, yes
[21:54:56] skd5aner: they are – just I know that direct DB manip isn't usually the advice given ;)
[21:55:04] iamlindoro: ie if your storage group path is /path/to/my/fanart, and you move the image there, then it's just "bah_fanart.png"
[21:55:28] skd5aner: Yup – I'm comfortable doing it, just a little surprised, heh ;)
[21:55:28] iamlindoro: Well yeah. there are still destructive ways to fix it without doing so, but I figured you'd prefer this one
[21:56:22] Twiggy2cents: man... I decide to update mythtv. I started with the backend first. It is now updated, but my frontend repo is down. Lovely luck
[21:57:03] kormoc: frontend repo? it's the same package that provides both
[21:57:10] Twiggy2cents: different distros

[22:02:31] Ryushin: Problem is always finding what usb ir receivers work under linux. There are a couple small time version like iguana and such.
[22:02:47] kormoc: mceusb receivers work fine
[22:02:56] Twiggy2cents: I am having an issue with mythweb. I updated the backend to 0.24 and then dropped the mythweb files into the var/www/mythweb folder. I can see the recorded programs but I have two errors when trying to view recording schedules
[22:03:01] kormoc: have for years, very common to find, and painless to use
[22:03:16] Ryushin: kormac: Peftect. I'll use one of those.

[22:04:03] Twiggy2cents: I didnt restart the computer, is that necessary?

[22:11:42] kormoc: nope
[22:11:52] Twiggy2cents: I had a recording set to record tonight, but it didnt say it was upcoming. When I reset the rule, the new rule showed it was upcoming and the old didnt
[22:13:01] iamlindoro: More likely that somewhere in the upgrade process you broke the input connections on your cards
[22:13:11] iamlindoro: Where' sphery with his favorite link about fixing it
[22:13:22] Twiggy2cents: it plays video fine
[22:13:27] iamlindoro: As it would
[22:13:40] iamlindoro: Live TV owuld work fine, only recordings would be horked
[22:13:53] iamlindoro: that is, only the execution of recordings-- existing ones would be fine
[22:14:01] Twiggy2cents: it did break until I started it though. I tried to use watch tv and it said that all tuners are currently being used. I restarted the computer and that fixed that
[22:14:22] Twiggy2cents: so I shouldnt be able to watch my recordings?
[22:15:04] iamlindoro: "existing ones would be fine"
[22:15:20] iamlindoro: Live TV will work, watching recordings and videos will work, only the actual recording will be broken
[22:15:42] Twiggy2cents: even though I updated the recording rule and it shows it set to record now?
[22:15:51] ** iamlindoro sighs **
[22:15:55] iamlindoro: why do I try?
[22:16:08] iamlindoro: anyway, good luck again
[22:16:11] Twiggy2cents: Well I am confused on what you are saying. I dont really want it to not record it
