[00:06:47] smooph1: hi guys
[00:07:16] smooph1: for some reason my backend doesn't have my media in it
[00:07:52] smooph1: I have added the location od the directories in the "video" storage group
[00:08:13] smooph1: do I have to initiate a search in the backend
[00:08:23] smooph1: or is that just the case with the frontend
[00:09:03] wagnerrp: you have to do the same 'scan for videos' in the frontend
[00:09:28] wagnerrp: but since your content is now stored in the backend, the frontend will pull file lists from the backend, rather than the local file system
[00:13:35] dekarl (dekarl!~deKarl@e180138216.adsl.alicedsl.de) has quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[00:13:37] smooph1: wagnerrp: mhh the second folder in the backend seems to be detected but the thrid isn't
[00:13:54] smooph1: any idea why this could be the case
[00:17:19] smooph1: the backend is running as user mythtv ... and the share is mounted to a different user
[00:17:20] wagnerrp: you have three folders listed under the 'Videos' storage group in the backend?
[00:17:29] smooph1: yes
[00:17:30] wagnerrp: mounted how?
[00:17:37] wagnerrp: local? NFS? samba?
[00:17:46] hednod: is there a way to tell mythtv's build in player to buffer/cache a certain amount of the video/dvd/etc into ram?
[00:18:09] smooph1: turecrypt storage mounted as /media/truecrypt1
[00:18:15] wagnerrp: hednod: no, mythtv just assumes you have a sufficiently stable connection
[00:19:07] hednod: wagnerrp: if only i was OCD enough to ensure my DVDs never sustain any surface damage ;)
[00:19:08] wagnerrp: there may be something going on with truecrypt where it will only allow access to the user who mounted it
[00:19:26] wagnerrp: is truecrypt a FUSE filesystem?
[00:19:44] wagnerrp: hednod: buy more hard drives, rip, and never use the DVDs again
[00:19:57] KimK: This might be related to my problem, how do you "scan for videos"? (Yes, i'm a MythTV noob) I've used the import function to read a DVD and I have it in /var/lib/mythtv/videos both as an .iso and as a .vob (?). But when I try to "play a video" there's nothing there. I'm very confused. Also, I can play a DVD with mplayer, but Myth(buntu) says, "frame buffering failed too many times" and gives up.
[00:20:20] wagnerrp: in mythvideo, hit 'm'
[00:20:22] smooph1: i don't know i think it mounts simply as an ntfs volume and the frontend can find the video so i don't think thats the problem

[00:21:38] wagnerrp: is this mounted on your frontend or backend?
[00:23:07] smooph1: like i said in my case front and backend are on the same machine
[00:23:33] wagnerrp: ah, i didnt see that
[00:23:55] smooph1: i think there is a problem with my logic because the second folder i was telling u works is also owned by my user
[00:24:08] smooph1: something is fishy
[00:25:35] [R] ([R]!~rbox@unaffiliated/rbox) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:25:58] wagnerrp: the frontend and the backend both just use whatever they can find on the filesystem
[00:26:17] wagnerrp: if the backend cannot read something, its probably a permissions issue
[00:26:46] wagnerrp: truecrypt drives work through a FUSE filesystem
[00:26:57] wagnerrp: typically, FUSE mounts are only available to the user who mounted them
[00:27:13] wagnerrp: so if you mount them with one user, and run the backend as another, the backend will not have access to that mount
[00:27:26] wagnerrp: use '-o allow_other'
[00:29:28] gholmlund (gholmlund!~quassel@76-191-205-135.dsl.dynamic.sonic.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:34:15] KimK: wagnerrp: Thanks! That's progress. I must need to Google a reference card. Also, I can only play one of the two files, I'm guessing it's the .iso that Myth doesn't like? (I'm off to Google anyway, what the heck is a .vob?) Thanks again. Any parting advice?
[00:34:53] wagnerrp: video object, its a special type of MPEG container used by DVDs
[00:35:12] wagnerrp: KimK: are you using storage groups?

[00:40:21] dustybin: my mythtv is borked for the first time in ages
[00:40:25] KimK: wagnerrp: Sorry, I'm not sure what you're referring to. I combined 97% of two drives into one LVM after my first unsuccessful partitioning attempt. (Well, I thought the videos would end up in /home. I got fooled. I'm paying my MythTV tuition, I guess. ) Is that what you're asking about? Or is it the ../videos ../music ../recordings , etc.?
[00:42:24] wagnerrp: did you define your video directors on the frontend? or backend?
[00:47:27] gigem_ (gigem_!~david@host137.12.intrusion.com) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[00:47:30] KimK: This is the first time I've tried building a MythTV, I don't know much about it, it just sounded neat, and I thought I'd try it. (I just discovered F10/F11, that was helpful! ) What are the video directors? And would you know where Myth keeps the database password? I'd like to try installing a remote frontend, and it's asking for it. I wrote down the old one, but I had to reinstall after the /home debacle, lol. .

[04:08:52] wagnerrp: such infrequent backports, you guys arent even bothering any longer?
[04:09:38] tgm4883: wagnerrp, we've promised to have autobuilds for 2 mythtv releases. current and trunk.
[04:09:55] tgm4883: we've stopped doing 0.23.1 since 0.24 was branched
[04:10:02] wagnerrp: well technically, 0.23 is still current
[04:10:08] wagnerrp: 0.24 is... i dont know what you would call it
[04:10:14] wagnerrp: but fair enough
[04:10:17] Beirdo: not current yet
[04:11:24] tgm4883: yea
[04:12:13] tgm4883: we're in the middle of transfering the builds to launchpad, so after that happens we might be able to do more

[05:52:02] LabMonkey: That's entirely irrelevant.
[05:53:15] wagnerrp: anyway... proceed, whats your issue
[05:54:22] wagnerrp: the database upgrade issues was a result of mythtv not enforcing a specific encoding, and gentoo using a different default decoding than mysql normally does
[05:54:23] LabMonkey: At this point, the box auto-starts mythtv on boot, which is what I want. The problem is that now LCDd and lirc are being bothersome.

[05:57:31] LabMonkey: One is that for some reason the remote doesn't seem to work anymore even though I'm using the same config.
[05:57:56] LabMonkey: The other is that LCDd is spamming syslog with release/reserve messages.
[05:58:12] LabMonkey: or at least lirc_imon is anyway

[15:50:46] GadgetWisdomGuru: I ordered that 2TB drive last night.
[15:51:00] wagnerrp: JEDIDIAH__: if you have an alignment issue, you have a configuration issue
[15:51:10] wagnerrp: make sure the first partition starts at block 64 instead of 63
[15:51:20] wagnerrp: and then format with 4k blocks (or a multiple there of)
[15:52:41] JEDIDIAH__: you can usually distill any "performance issue" into a "configuration issue".
[15:52:45] sphery: or, better, cfdisk -s 56 or fdisk -S 56 or tell parted to use 56 sectors per track, and it all works with everything
[15:53:28] sphery: JEDIDIAH__: the performance impact I was talking about was the performance required to CRC in 512B hunks versus 4kB hunks

[16:26:58] pyther: Is there still an option to change the osd theme?
[16:28:28] wagnerrp: no, the OSD and UI are now one theme
[16:28:45] wagnerrp: if you want to mix-and-match, youll need to edit the theme
[16:29:31] pyther: Hmm... ok, I wonder if it is a theme bug, it only shows one line of the show description
[16:30:34] pyther: wagnerrp: the time to takes to lock onto a channel, is that a myth thing or a hardware thing?
[16:30:51] wagnerrp: a bit of both
[16:31:16] wagnerrp: its a hardware limit
[16:31:31] wagnerrp: but the handling of that information in mythtv was recently revised in 0.24/trunk
[16:31:45] pyther: ok, well it didn't improve so it must mostly be hardware
[16:31:52] pyther: takes probably 3–5 seconds for a lock
[16:33:59] pyther: still no way to increase the audio volume is there?
[16:34:17] wagnerrp: in what scenario?
[16:34:32] wagnerrp: if you are recording digitally, the volume is set during time of encoding, by the broadcaster
[16:34:43] pyther: that is what I mean
[16:34:56] pyther: I have to crank the volume up on my speakers :-/
[16:35:00] wagnerrp: if outputting digitally, there is no volume until it gets decoded by the device at the other end of the link
[16:35:07] pyther: so all my other audio is loud as hell
[16:35:10] wagnerrp: you can use softvol in between
[16:35:22] wagnerrp: i dont know if that was added in 0.23 or 0.24
[16:35:36] pyther: what is softvol?
[16:36:01] wagnerrp: where you use digital audio, but you decode it, preamp it, re-encode it, and send it on to the remote device
[16:36:20] pyther: is that cpu intensive?

[16:37:23] pyther: wagnerrp: you have a guide or link to some documentation?
[16:37:26] wagnerrp: better to just use LPCM if your link supports it though
[16:37:59] wagnerrp: spdif or hdmi?
[16:38:19] pyther: neither, an analog 3.5mm connection to some crappy computer speakers

[16:39:36] wagnerrp: then you are not using digital output, and the volume shoudl work fine
[16:40:15] pyther: wagnerrp: I know I'm not using digital output, the broadcaster just broadcast the volume much lower than the rest of my other audio stuff
[16:40:36] pyther: so is the softvol only for digital audio connections?
[16:40:59] wagnerrp: apparently there is some flag in AC3 were not reading
[16:41:09] wagnerrp: that is supposed to set a 'decode volume'

[16:56:55] wagnerrp: xbmc will connect to any backend, whether it knows how to talk to it or not
[16:57:32] fugdnscerd: is that with the native mythtv support or just the upnp protocol? I wish to be able to watch live tv if at all possible
[16:58:11] wagnerrp: if by 'native', you mean the 3rd party library that ignores the protocol version check to force a connection
[16:59:01] fugdnscerd: ok i understand.. just repeating the terminology used in the xbmc documentation.. thanks
