[00:42:24] dewman: when running mytharchive and it fails with Result 133 is that typically permissions on the device or the sym link?

[01:00:19] Captain_Murdoch: anyone compile recent (ie, <7 days old) trunk on a 32-bit machine under CentOS 5.x?
[01:00:53] Captain_Murdoch: specifically having an issue compiling postprocess_template.c, gcc running out of registers.
[01:07:05] wagnerrp: rather specific a question
[01:08:29] Captain_Murdoch: yep. :)
[01:08:41] iamlindoro: Captain_Murdoch, I had heard of a similar failure a week or so ago, it was reported to janneg-- not sure if he made changes to account for it
[01:08:49] iamlindoro: I am also not sure it was under centos
[01:08:50] Captain_Murdoch: rather specific an issue. I "svn updated" today and can't compileanymore.
[01:09:03] Captain_Murdoch: yeah, he put in a fix, but that doesn't help here.
[01:09:12] iamlindoro: ok, all I know I'm afraid, than
[01:09:13] iamlindoro: er then
[01:09:29] Captain_Murdoch: fix was for debug compiles on 32-bit hardware, disabled PIC on that lib.
[01:09:43] wagnerrp: awesome! storm tickers
[01:10:12] wagnerrp: guess i may as well 'forget old' right now

[01:10:42] Captain_Murdoch: storm/election tickers are the reason I created manual zoom.
[01:10:59] wagnerrp: sadly, if i did that, id lose half the show
[01:11:29] tweek__: burned it out hooking it directly to the cable that feeds into the splitter in a vain attempt to prove once and for all that the digital signal quality is fine
[01:12:20] tweek__: and now I have to try to decide whether to try to RMA it or buy a new one that people SWEAR 'just works'
[01:12:20] gigem (gigem!~david@160.86.12.137) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[01:12:25] iamlindoro: If you are able to burn any consumer equipment out by hooking it into *any* feed on your premises, then your signal is very badly overamped indeed
[01:12:44] iamlindoro: nothing on your property should even approach the voltages necessary to harm tuners
[01:13:25] tweek__: well, let's see

[01:13:37] tweek__: it's hooked into a digital phone box
[01:13:39] tweek__: a cable modem
[01:13:46] tweek__: and seven other cable TV outlets
[01:14:38] dewman: i would think that if it blew your tuner, the rest of your equipment would be dead as well. but thats just my thought....
[01:14:57] iamlindoro: regardless of how many times you split it internal to your premises, an unsplit connection should never be amped to the point that it is capable of harming any device
[01:15:12] iamlindoro: I'm not saying it's not possible, merely that if it is, the cable company has messed up, badly
[01:15:34] iamlindoro: And you should have them out to attenuate the signal
[01:16:09] tweek__: well, I hooked the tuner directly to the amp's output at one point
[01:16:35] tweek__: and about a dozen other things, just blindly plugging and unplugging cable, desperately trying to get anything working
[01:17:16] dewman: I like to have my eyes open when plugging and unplugging...
[01:17:21] dewman: =)
[01:17:42] tweek__: and now the kernel segfaults are basically unbearable, so I took the device out

[02:12:42] ** kormoc eyes oneman quizzically **
[02:12:43] oneman: Its not against regulations, its just a secret project at this moment in time

[02:12:45] oneman: lol
[02:13:00] kormoc: oneman, so you have a secret project that you're willing to tell 104 strangers but not 187?
[02:13:12] wagnerrp: well then what kormoc said, theres over a hundred people in the other channel, so it wouldnt much be secret

[02:26:22] wagnerrp: how exactly does that work? they make the source repository open, but charge for binaries?
[02:26:43] Captain_Murdoch: sphery, if it wasn't for the Qt4 requirement, I was happy compiling and running on my nfsroot Fedora 5 install with custom kernel.
[02:26:49] sphery: Aren't they using Trademark law to trump the copyright law?
[02:27:08] kormoc: wagnerrp, you can download the binaries directly even, but you don't get access to the repo to find the binaries/etc
[02:27:10] sphery: i.e. "Have to pay since it says RHEL." So the CentOS guys scrub the source of TM'ed content.

[02:30:04] CNLiberal: because i had it working in .22

[02:32:35] sphery: especially on an LCD

[02:42:28] CNLiberal: and upping it to panel native 120hz
[02:42:30] jya: and play it at 24Hz
[02:42:33] dewman: kormoc, Nothing funny in the drive.
[02:42:37] CNLiberal: it can't accept 120Hz
[02:42:41] jya: CNLiberal: no
[02:42:54] achew22: Is there a mythtvosd that can be used without GUI? it is provided by mythtv-frontend right now. Can it be taken from a different box and just run or should I have that box ssh and execute on a box that has gui?
[02:42:57] jya: it's not even doing that... forget the 120Hz bit , it's rubbish
[02:43:37] CNLiberal: ok, well, i came here to figure out the xrandr issue i'm having...cuz i think it relates to mythfrontend not playing 24hz content

[02:44:05] CNLiberal: in nvidia-settings i have the force full scaling checked
[02:44:20] jya: I haven't read what you wrote earlier, I heard beep as my named was mentioned , that's all..
[02:44:25] achew22: sphery: Thanks
[02:44:27] CNLiberal: and when i xrandr -r 53 it stays at 60hz
[02:44:35] CNLiberal: oh, well, no problem
[02:45:06] dewman: since mytharchive has already encoded the files, is there a way to tell mytharchive to restart or pickup where it ended or does the software need to go through all the motions of re-encoding the videos again?
[02:45:29] jya: sphery: you can't not play 24Hz content smoothly on a 60Hz screen, *ever*.. So stating "why bother", is ignoring the problem at hand
[02:45:36] jya: CNLiberal
[02:45:45] jya: I mentioned it on the wiki, of the cause for this
[02:45:56] jya: you need to disable GPU scaling in nvidia-settings
[02:46:05] jya: or in xorg.conf add:
[02:46:28] jya: Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Native"
[02:46:32] jya: in the screen section
[02:47:05] CNLiberal: yeah, i'm doing that now
[02:47:29] CNLiberal: i was doing it the way Andre Newman suggested in an email thread to me a while ago
[02:47:43] CNLiberal: it was checked in nvidia-settings, but not in Screen section
[02:47:46] CNLiberal: let's try again :-)

[02:48:15] jya: you don't want it checked in nvidia-settings
[02:48:19] jya: it's checked by default
[02:48:28] jya: when checked it means let the GPU do the scaling
[02:48:40] jya: which for some reasons with nvidia, force the screen at 60Hz
[02:49:30] CNLiberal: k i got it backwards then
[02:50:34] CNLiberal: booyah
[02:50:37] CNLiberal: works now
[02:50:40] CNLiberal: thanks for correcting me
[02:50:47] jya: probably your problem... Personally, I don't use the nvidia-settings option, because it only works for the current user, and sometimes it won't reload the settings
[02:50:55] jya: so the xorg.conf is a better option IMHO
[02:51:29] jya: CNLiberal: don't feel bad, it took me over a week to figure out why I wouldn't get anything else but 60Hz on my TV...
[02:51:52] jya: until one day, a nvidia engineers gave me the answer on their forum
[02:51:54] CNLiberal: yeah, you're the one who helped me...u saved me a TON of time...I'm CNLibMyth on the mailing list
[02:52:55] CNLiberal: well poopy...when i try and play the M2TS file with Internal, i'm getting "Video fram buffering failed too many times." on a .23 fresh install
[02:53:31] jya: is it encrypted?
[02:53:32] CNLiberal: but an avi plays ok
[02:53:38] CNLiberal: good question...shouldn't be
[02:53:41] CNLiberal: let me try in mplayer
[02:55:00] CNLiberal: plays in mplayer no problem
[02:55:28] CNLiberal: however, there are multiple video tracks and audio tracks
[02:58:21] tweek__: worst case scenario, I'm not able to RMA this damaged card
[02:58:31] CNLiberal: i wonder if this is a multi video track issue
[02:58:52] tweek__: in that case, are there any other ATSC/NTSC cards that work in Linux?
[02:59:05] CNLiberal: cuz the default video track "when mplayer plays the file" is what looks like a commentary track

[03:03:13] jya: yes
[03:03:15] achew22: I saw a while back that after the mythui-osd branch merge someone was looking at making mythtvosd events. Is there a ticket for that? I can't find it in trac.
[03:03:36] CNLiberal: dang
[03:04:20] jya: CNLiberal: there are some options you can add that help with lipsync in mplayer... There is also a patch for mplayer that will properly drop frames as required.. The issue is that 24Hz on the video card, is never exactly the same refresh rate on the TV
[03:04:38] CNLiberal: well i'd like to fix it so i can use .23 internal and adjust audio sync that way, but it just won't play in internal
[03:05:15] jya: CNLiberal: I only use the internal player these days, so you'll have to google it.. It's on the huge mplayer vdpau thread on the nvnews forum
[03:05:39] jya: I haven't seen a video that plays in mplayer but not with internal for a very long time ...
[03:05:58] CNLiberal: i think it's something else with internal...i tried running with -v playback
[03:06:00] CNLiberal: didn't really help
[03:06:41] CNLiberal: do you have m2ts files w multiple video tracks jya?
[03:07:02] jya: not sure... I only ever worry about the audio bit :P
[03:07:17] CNLiberal: haha
[03:07:29] CNLiberal: well, that feature will be welcome as well

[03:09:19] CNLiberal: that's cuz the default video track starts off black
[03:10:12] jya: i'm sure that's not the issue, the trying message is always there at the start

[03:10:21] high-rez: Like this: <=> ] 26,374 --.-K/s
[03:10:35] jya: and as it can't find it, will use 60Hz or whatever the highest is available
[03:10:39] CNLiberal: hmm

[03:21:36] wagnerrp: if you want to capture that, you can run something like asterisk
[03:21:37] achew22: wagnerrp: they have a desktop client which makes me think they might be doing TCP or UDP broadcast or something
[03:22:25] wagnerrp: or you can open up wireshark, have it filter for broadcast traffic, and call your home from a cell phone
[03:22:41] achew22: thats a good idea
[03:22:45] achew22: wireshark away
[03:23:33] wagnerrp: there may be some sort of SNMP trap on the ATA
[03:23:48] wagnerrp: are your STBs connected to the network? or just the cable line?

[03:24:11] wagnerrp: so theyre going to receive their own data
[03:24:19] achew22: ... since they have a desktop client they have to be doing something over tcp/ip

[03:27:34] achew22: ebah: I have it running on a netbook and it is good for SD

[03:27:47] wagnerrp: HD is generally too intensive for a netbook
[03:28:05] ebah: that alright, not real interested in hd.
[03:28:06] achew22: ebah: there are netbooks that have NVidia ION in them and they should be able to do it without a hickup

[03:28:18] achew22: wagnerrp: the comcast box gets it in 0 rings (before the phone rings) and the AT command stuff takes 2 rings.

[03:31:22] wagnerrp: so its probably pulling direct from comcast too

[03:31:41] high-rez: Nobody? SchedulesDirect gets 26374 bytes every single time almost immiediately and then times out :(
[03:31:42] achew22: that's not far fetched at all
[03:32:24] wagnerrp: high-rez: i bet theres only a handful of people related to mythtv who could tell you just what is in that data packet
[03:32:50] wagnerrp: much better option would be to try to fix your internet
[03:33:06] high-rez: wagnerrp: It's not my internet. I've taken a tcpdump
[03:33:11] high-rez: I've even routed out a different interface.
[03:33:50] high-rez: Its pretty clear that the SD server is stalling, but for what reason I don't know.
[03:34:08] wagnerrp: if the SD server is stalling, file a support ticket
[03:34:18] high-rez: And its not just once, but over and over again 26374 bytes – and then stalled.
[03:34:48] high-rez: Which wouldn't be such a big deal because once it gets going again it moves – but its not soon enough before mythtv-setup gives up.
[03:36:31] kormoc: high-rez, how long has it been going on?
[03:37:23] high-rez: kormoc: At least 30 mins

[03:38:48] kormoc: high-rez, normal mythfilldatabase or a --refresh-all or?
[03:38:50] high-rez: The bursty behavior of SD for me has always been like this – and its not a big deal because fetching content doesn't seem to have a 60 second timeout (makes sense) – but it appears that myth_system() has a timeout of abouty 60 seconds.
[03:39:01] high-rez: kormoc: Im just trying to fetch my lineup

[03:40:54] achew22: Ah
[03:41:06] high-rez: kormoc: Even for fetching lineups ?
[03:41:15] kormoc: but as we're just a passthough to tribune, we don't have much control over it

[03:46:24] achew22: kormoc: nifty so you have a cname that points to their server bank and then some kind of user control protocol to create/expire users that are not paying any more

[03:48:59] kormoc: achew22, a lot of it they license from the networks
[03:49:02] high-rez: Makes sense why schedulesdirect.org is speedy fetching the actual data is a bad experience.
[03:49:03] achew22: do they pay some poor humans to do data input or do they get a feed from NBC and stuff?

[03:50:29] wagnerrp: just think of the management overhead needed to do that

[04:00:47] wagnerrp: TheMaverick`: sure, it has a firewire port
[04:01:13] wagnerrp: it can pull digital video at higher resolutions over firewire
[04:01:18] high-rez: sphery: No? Pfft.
[04:01:25] wagnerrp: but its not capturing anything over firewire
[04:01:32] wagnerrp: consider firewire to be similar to USB
[04:01:46] high-rez: sphery: I can't even find where it's defined.  :)
[04:01:57] wagnerrp: its just an interconnect that you use to connect to digital video cameras
[04:02:34] sphery: high-rez: mythtv/libs/libmythdb/mythsystem.cpp
[04:02:46] high-rez: huh mythdb
[04:03:05] high-rez: i wonder if I could just kill -stop mythtv-setup until wget finishes :)
[04:03:26] TheMaverick`: wagnerrp: so it's the actual tuner, not the coax input?
[04:03:37] wagnerrp: what is?
[04:03:42] sphery: high-rez: what are you trying to do?
[04:03:49] TheMaverick`: wagnerrp: the limitation
[04:04:00] wagnerrp: TheMaverick`: yes, the tuner is limited to 480i
[04:04:22] wagnerrp: it would be pointless for the tuner to be capable of anything better than 480i, because there are no signals it could receive that would be better than 480i
[04:04:28] high-rez: sphery: Tribune is so slow at the moment that mythtv-setup is timing out the wget before it returns my lineups (i just want to populate my lineup)
[04:04:36] wagnerrp: 480i is the limit of NTSC broadcasts and cable transmissions in the US
[04:04:53] high-rez: sphery: So I click "retrieve lineups" and wait and wait and wait. Tribune sends 25k of data almost immediately – then nothing for about 50 seconds...
[04:05:14] high-rez: sphery: But myth_system appears to be timing out before that 50 seconds is up. :'/
[04:05:29] wagnerrp: no idea why it would behave that way, it returns within a couple seconds for me
[04:05:31] TheMaverick`: wagnerrp: Ok. I guess I was confused by this website: http://reviews.cnet.com/graphics-cards/ati-al . . . g=mncol;rnav
[04:05:41] benc_ (benc_!~benc@markcaswell.dsl.visi.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[04:05:43] TheMaverick`: says it has digital video capture
[04:05:52] sphery: high-rez: for me it gets in without issue
[04:05:52] high-rez: wagnerrp: Do you have maybe a small lineups? I have a raelly big lineup.
[04:05:54] wagnerrp: yes, it can connect to firewire devices
[04:06:04] sphery: high-rez: are you sure your account/username/password are working properly?
[04:06:32] high-rez: sphery: i can login to the web interface fine. Additionally, I took a tcpdump and opened it in wiresharl – and it apepars to be fine...
[04:06:35] sphery: high-rez: or perhaps you're using a bad proxy and don't have proxy settings specified?
[04:06:53] wagnerrp: TheMaverick`: it does not have a digital tuner, the extent that it supports 'digital capture' is that it has a firewire port that it can use to connect to other devices that can capture video
[04:07:08] wagnerrp: TheMaverick`: for instance, you could use it to connect to a firewire-equipped cable box
[04:07:12] sphery: TheMaverick`: I think you need to be looking at http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATI/AMD . . . e_facilities
[04:07:20] high-rez: sphery: i'm not using a proxy and I have two ISPs here – and if I set my gw through the cable modem is the same result as through the dsl..
[04:07:23] sphery: i.e. the "No"s
[04:07:44] wagnerrp: and over that firewire link, you could capture the full 720p or 1080i digital stream that the cableco is transmitting
[04:08:01] wagnerrp: however the internal tuner and capture support offered by that card is limited to 480i
[04:08:28] TheMaverick`: wagnerrp: gotcha. that helped
[04:08:42] high-rez: sphery: Really, for sure, it's not my ISP(s).  :)
[04:08:43] wagnerrp: and any other device offering NTSC tuning, or composite/svideo capture will be similarly limited to 480i
[04:08:56] TheMaverick`: sphery: I'll give it a read. Thanks :)
[04:09:17] wagnerrp: you will only get something better than 480i if you are capturing over component video, or if you are using a digital tuner that captures the pre-compressed mpeg2 stream from the cableco
[04:11:03] benc_ (benc_!~benc@markcaswell.dsl.visi.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[04:11:29] TheMaverick`: wagnerrp: so I guess it's going to be a bit difficult to accomplish capture without a cable box, since stuff has moved to digital
[04:11:32] sphery: high-rez: can you pastebin the mythtv-setup log output at default verbosity
[04:12:35] high-rez: sphery: ok
[04:13:07] wagnerrp: TheMaverick`: http://mythtv.org/wiki/Recording_Digital_Cable
[04:14:02] TheMaverick`: wagnerrp: tyvm, I've got a good bit of reading to do
[04:15:03] sphery: wagnerrp: http://mythtv.org/wiki/Recording_Digital_Cabl . . . Simulcasting sounds strange... "analog digital cable television is provided right along side digital cable television"???
[04:15:09] high-rez: sphery: -v all ok ?
[04:15:17] sphery: are they trying to say "unencrypted"?
[04:15:34] sphery: high-rez: maybe--depends on how much extra garbage there is
[04:15:56] sphery: default verbosity would be ideal (as all of the datadirect-related log output is in -v important, general
[04:16:34] sphery: oh, maybe they're just saying "analog" and shouldn't have the extra "digital" in there...

[04:20:40] high-rez: sphery: did infact compile myth myself..
[04:20:45] high-rez: s/did/i did
[04:20:57] high-rez: I mean, i got a little help from the folks at gcc and make
[04:21:07] sphery: high-rez: if we don't get enough info, I may have you change a define so we can see the wget output
[04:21:10] high-rez: I can't take all the credit.  :)
[04:21:25] TheMaverick`: sphery: where might I look to see if other cards I have are supported?
[04:21:40] sphery: !url tuners
[04:21:40] MythLogBot: tuners: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hardwar . . . _Information
[04:21:40] high-rez: well i can see the wget output on the terminal...
[04:21:44] ebah: so mythtv requires the backend even just to watch live tv?
[04:21:51] high-rez: i mean the little line moving back and forth.
[04:21:59] TheMaverick`: sphery: ty again
[04:22:35] sphery: high-rez: you get stdout, but not stderr and you don't get the actual command line we're using
[04:22:42] high-rez: Hmm
[04:22:43] high-rez: Wow
[04:23:03] high-rez: It's not just the lineup name – but its the actual program data that cmae down
[04:23:04] high-rez: it appears
[04:23:33] high-rez: A ton of sql inserts: 2010-06–14 21:22:22.670 MSqlQuery::exec(DataDirectCon) INSERT INTO dd_genre ( programid, class, relevance) VALUES ('MV002501010000', 'Documentary', '0')
[04:25:01] high-rez: When I go to fetch the lineup – should actual program data be in there ?
[04:25:09] high-rez: I thought it would be one of two possible values.
[04:25:16] high-rez: (the two lineups I have on my account)
[04:25:18] kormoc: ebah, yes
[04:25:30] kormoc: high-rez, nah, we populate the channels and all that at the same time
[04:26:01] high-rez: Hmmf
[04:26:04] high-rez: ok
[04:26:18] sphery: high-rez: if you mean when you hit the "Retrieve Lineups" button, that should be tiny--I get 1.37KB of data
[04:26:32] high-rez: sphery: I get >100kb
[04:26:43] high-rez: and yes thats hitting retreive lineups
[04:26:44] sphery: something isn't working right, then
[04:26:48] kormoc: sphery, I get a full dump too
[04:27:05] high-rez: Now, for full disclosure? I am running trunk.
[04:27:14] sphery: I'm testing on trunk
[04:27:20] kormoc: I only run -trunk
[04:27:29] kormoc: -fixes is for those stable loving sissies!
[04:28:56] sphery: high-rez: do you have any .wgetrc files on your system?
[04:29:15] high-rez: sphery: Nope – the read_timeout for wget is 900 seconds...

[04:29:48] sphery: I'm thinking that your wget isn't using cookies or something, so we're not sending the request properly
[04:30:10] high-rez: sphery: I have a packet capture of the transaction. It appeared corect for the most part.
[04:30:43] sphery: I'd still like to see the log output
[04:31:08] high-rez: yeah i'm restartging with proper verbosity now
[04:32:00] sphery: and if you'd like to change libs/libmythtv/datadirect.cpp line 21 to "#define SHOW_WGET_OUTPUT 1" (no quotes--i.e. enable SHOW_WGET_OUTPUT), you may get a better idea what's happening if it is a wget issue
[04:32:28] kormoc: sphery, btw, re backend locale, my locale is "en_US.UTF-8" and it looks like myth is only seeing the en_US part of it
[04:32:38] kormoc: 2010-06–14 21:29:54.596 No locale defaults file for en_US, skipping
[04:32:42] kormoc: is that expected?
[04:33:38] sphery: kormoc: yeah, that's the locale, the charmap/codeset info is stripped off, but Qt uses is properly.
[04:34:25] sphery: unfortunately, Qt doesn't give us access to info on which charmap it's using--all I can get is the name "System", which is completely useless, especially with the complex algorithm they use to determine what the System setting is
[04:34:54] high-rez: http://pastebin.ca/1883368
[04:35:16] kormoc: sphery, okay, so that ticket that I can re-produce isn't related to the BE not in utf-8 mode then, correct?
[04:35:29] sphery: I started a patch to output the charmap info after the locale info message, but Qt won't give it to me. I'm considering a hack that outputs the info Qt uses to determine the charmap, then if we need to determine what's happening, we'll see the raw data it uses
[04:35:39] sphery: kormoc: sounds like it's not
[04:36:10] high-rez: i'm gonna delete and re-add my lieups
[04:36:11] high-rez: who knoiws
[04:36:11] kormoc: kk

[04:39:24] high-rez: sphery: If you've got wireshark handy I can give you more than that :)

[17:10:35] justinh: how long it takes is however long it takes. some people's setups change faster than others & there's not much to determine why

[17:11:16] J-e-f-f-A: Sagoniar: That depends... if it's your channel-change script, perhaps, but if it's waiting for the lock, then not really.

[17:49:42] sphery: coolblue: if all you want to do is reset the starting channel, just go to mythtv-setup and change just the starting channel (on all your input connections) there
[17:49:50] coolblue: I have deactivated this channel in mythweb, but it does not solve it
[17:49:58] J-e-f-f-A: coolblue: perhaps running 'mythtv-setup' again, and changing the 'starting' channel for that tuner to a known good channel would work? Then delete the 'bad' channel' using the channel editor?
[17:50:11] sphery: i.e. if you had tried to go to an unusable channel, it remembers that channel and will always again start on that channel
[17:50:26] sphery: so you have to change it in mythtv-setup and then don't ever go back to the bad channel
[17:50:26] J-e-f-f-A: sphery: hey, that's not fair, you can't type the same solution at the same time as me! ;-) hehehehehehe
[17:50:38] coolblue: sphery: yes, thats a problem
[17:51:24] sphery: heh, but I was slower than you, it seems :)
[17:51:49] J-e-f-f-A: sphery: not according to my irc window. ;-)
[17:51:57] justinh: I think the 'starting channel' and 'last channel tuned' behaviour could stand a looking at
[17:51:58] Sagoniar: do you think that a via 800mhz will be sufficient for a frontend and watching SD records ?
[17:52:10] justinh: Sagoniar: no. I've been there
[17:52:21] coolblue: funny guyes :-) I will try again in backend to set to another start channel… but in the past, the frontend ignores this setting and use the old channel :(
[17:52:23] Sagoniar: erff .. a new nas is born so ^^
[17:52:24] justinh: it was ok sometimes, and not ok at other times. it was a *mess*
[17:52:26] J-e-f-f-A: Sagoniar: What type of SD? MPEG2? Perhaps.
[17:52:35] Sagoniar: yes
[17:52:38] Sagoniar: dvb-t records

[17:52:48] justinh: via xvmc has been broken many many times
[17:53:15] Sagoniar: sad ..
[17:53:17] justinh: my via epia frontend worked for ages, then suddenly one day something in the streams changed & it couldn't keep up
[17:53:34] J-e-f-f-A: Sagoniar: It might be ok, but that's pretty slow.
[17:53:39] Sagoniar: cpu usage related ?
[17:53:45] Sagoniar: or via chipset .. ?
[17:53:55] justinh: Sagoniar: no. related to the mpeg2 decoder not coping
[17:53:59] Sagoniar: ok
[17:54:14] justinh: it's a very expensive solution for what you get for the money
[17:54:21] Sagoniar: i will receive it tomorrow .. i will give it a try just for fun ..
[17:54:25] Sagoniar: 30 euros
[17:54:34] Sagoniar: shipping included
[17:54:37] J-e-f-f-A: I've got an Asus Pundit P2 with a Via chipset, and it does fine for SD, but it's an Athlon 64 3200+ processor too...
[17:54:39] Sagoniar: not a new of course
[17:54:53] J-e-f-f-A: ... but it doesn't do US MPEG2 720p very well... very notchy.
[17:54:56] justinh: I bought mine from new
[17:55:29] Sagoniar: for the price of a via epia , i preffer s775 itx or an atom
[17:55:52] Sagoniar: but 775 itx and atom are new .. so epia was a dream for long tims for me
[17:56:04] justinh: if you're gonna go with small form factor get something with real video decoding onboard
[17:56:09] J-e-f-f-A: Sagoniar: Does it have a PCIe slot?

[18:00:55] J-e-f-f-A: xvmc is dead.
[18:01:13] sphery: long live CPU decoding
[18:01:19] Sagoniar: ok
[18:01:27] sphery: (for MPEG-2, no need for anything else :)
[18:01:57] sphery: Sagoniar: it should be possible to compile with XvMC support currently, but XvMC is very limited and only works with MPEG-2
[18:02:15] sphery: VDPAU is a better solution for people who buy underpowered CPUs
[18:02:19] Sagoniar: haa .. perfect .. i only record mpeg2 streams ...
[18:02:29] Sagoniar: (if dvb-t is really mpeg2) .... ^^
[18:02:30] sphery: but you'd need a VDPAU-compatible video card
[18:02:46] sphery: could be MPEG-2 or could be MPEG-4 AVC (H.264)
[18:02:55] Sagoniar: ok but vdpau is not possible for pci buses ...
[18:02:57] coolblue: is VDPAU not the preffered way over cpu decode?
[18:03:04] sphery: but XvMC puts more limitations on what can be done than it adds benefits
[18:03:08] Sagoniar: so i'm stuck to mpeg2 streams
[18:03:10] sphery: it's a big con with no real benefits
[18:03:30] Sagoniar: just for being clear .. does xvmc is useable with mpeg2 streams ?
[18:03:31] sphery: no, you have the opportunity to upgrade your system to a properly-chosen CPU :)

[18:04:39] coolblue: how much power is here needed?
[18:04:46] sphery: you can try to get xvmc to work, but IMHO, it's a waste of time
[18:04:55] Sagoniar: i don't use hd ... i really like cathodic feeling ^^
[18:05:07] sphery: a better CPU or a VDPAU-compatible video card is cheaper when you factor in time/effort

[18:07:37] sphery: XvMC is simply a means of offloading inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (iDCT)--which are generally used for Motion Compensation in certain video CODECs--to the GPU. I.e. you push a little bit of math from the CPU to the GPU. It's a tiny bit of math, though, compared to what a modern processor can do.
[18:07:49] sphery: and, yes, I said a modern processor, so Atom doesn't qualify
[18:07:56] sphery: (it may be modern, but...  ;)

[19:23:17] autojack: are onboard nvidia GPUs good enough for HD playback, or should I just get a PCIE one?
[19:23:44] J-e-f-f-A: kormoc: yeah... should I be concerned about the one drive that causes xfs_db's "frag" command to segfault? (I am running an old OS – FC8 – plan to upgrade/re-install soon... ;-) )
[19:24:24] J-e-f-f-A: autojack: if you can give it 512MB ram, it will be sufficient. 256mb is not enough in most cases.
[19:24:46] autojack: ok, thanks, that's helpful :)
[19:25:11] autojack: considering upgrading my single core Celeron 2.1 system.
[19:25:21] kormoc: J-e-f-f-A, personally, I'd migrate all the data off and re-format it, yeah
[19:25:24] high-rez: Ruh roh, playing the bluray movie this started to puke allover the screen: AudioOutput Error: WriteAudio: device is in a bad state (state = 1)
[19:25:36] J-e-f-f-A: autojack: As an example, I have an 8400GS PCIe card that's got 512MB that works great, but one with 256MB is crappy...
[19:25:52] autojack: got it.
[19:26:02] J-e-f-f-A: autojack: ie: i also have an 8400GS PCIe with just 256MB and it doesn't work very well at all... :-(
[19:26:10] autojack: would a GF 7025 be good enough or should I get an 8 series?
[19:26:18] J-e-f-f-A: Not for VDPAU
[19:26:22] iamlindoro: high-rez: That error message has nothing to do with blu-ray playback
[19:26:40] iamlindoro: it is an audio output issue
[19:26:44] J-e-f-f-A: autojack: check out the wiki page for vdpau – must be an 8 series or better.
[19:26:48] high-rez: iamlindoro: Hmm. Could it be the high bitrate of the audio exposing a problem with my audio hardware ?
[19:26:50] autojack: yep, looking at it now.
[19:26:54] autojack: I hadn't heard of VDPAU.
[19:26:58] iamlindoro: doubtful
[19:27:17] high-rez: Weirdness.  :) OH well – I'll guess I'll actually get to see it when I get home. I stoked.  :D
[19:28:00] high-rez: It seems that it started when my read IO went up (its not at 7/8 megabytes/sec) – maybe my HD isn't keeping up?

[19:30:38] high-rez: iamlindoro: Perhaps I should. Perhaps I should.
[19:30:53] autojack: J-e-f-f-A: hah, I had that exact thought like 5 minutes ago looking at motherboards.

[19:41:53] coolblue: imalindoro: can you say why it is the wrong app? because of the instability?
[19:41:57] ebah: well, I wouldn't mind having dvr support.
[19:42:11] ebah: but if you can recomend something simple, I'm all ears
[19:42:20] iamlindoro: coolblue: the instability? Myth is perfectly stable
[19:42:45] iamlindoro: ebah: For simple TV viewing, Kaffeine for DVB, tvtime for basic analog framegrabbing
[19:43:04] at0m: coolblue: it's just bloat if you simply want to /watch/ tv
[19:43:11] coolblue: iamlindoro: not for me for livetv :-( at the last hour I'm looking live tv, and during this time I get two times a error and I go back to home
[19:43:28] ebah: I run gnome, so Kaffeine is out. It is a DVB tuner
[19:43:30] iamlindoro: coolblue: Misconfigurations and/or driver issues are not instabilities with MythTV
[19:43:45] iamlindoro: coolblue: and your personal experience with it is hardly a representation of everyone's
[19:45:08] coolblue: ianlindoro: I find it so hard to find the problems with hardware or driver or so and I don't understand why I can watch without problems in kaffeine but not in mythtv, its the same drinver and the same hardware, but other software

[19:54:04] justinh: I think for live tv users, if there are any new settings added at all there should be one to *not* remember the last channel tuned

[19:59:35] justinh: they change, get rearranged...
[19:59:50] high-rez: One of the problems people see (i think justinh aluded to this) is that myth will remember the last channel you tuned. so if the last channel you tuned got moved to a different transponder, then well life sucks.

[20:55:09] J-e-f-f-A: iamlindoro: Ah, ok, that's probably it. I'll check that out as soon as I get home. ;-)
[20:56:09] justinh: high-rez: freesat is mostly FTA but the pay TV channels are off limits
[20:57:28] J-e-f-f-A: iamlindoro: Let's put it this way... I was running my PVR-500 at 400x480, at a 'moderate' bitrate with Dish, and this looks WORSE!!! I think I can 'afford' the disk space to push it up to look as good as the original source... ;-)
[20:57:41] autojack: 800 and 1066 cost basically the same so nevermind.
[20:57:42] J-e-f-f-A: iamlindoro: thanks. ;-)

[21:01:50] autojack: OK, I spec'd out a new system. micro atx MB with onboard GF 8200, 2x1GB RAM, Athlon X2 dual core 2.8 ghz processor. sound good?
[21:01:55] marc_us: even on my pvr 150s I bump to 720X480 at 5 mbs average and 7 mbs tops
[21:02:13] marc_us: just looks cleaner and wastes space
[21:02:21] autojack: $164 plus tax and shipping.

[21:35:28] sphery: gusto: there is work being done in trunk to better allow its use. In 0.23-fixes and below, it will cause issues because the Pulse Audio layer is not designed for low-latency audio (as is required to keep audio and video in sync).
[21:35:29] gusto: ??
[21:35:47] sphery: your best bet for MythTV, though, is to get rid of pulse audio
