[02:28:16] Buds: hey everyone, i just set up my 1st mythtv box and its running great but iv ran into a problem with sound. Im running a DVI to HDMI out of my geforce 9800GTX, i went to frys and got a SPDIF cable and connected it to the motherboard and to my graphics card, but still no sound via tv speakers.
[02:29:06] wagnerrp: thats a bit excessive for a mythtv box
[02:29:27] Buds: lol yea its not just my myth box.
[02:30:04] wagnerrp: your DVI video card has audio inputs?
[02:30:04] Buds: but is there something i have to do on the software end to get the hdmi sound up and running?
[02:30:20] Buds: internally yes
[02:30:42] Buds: SPDIF goes from your gfx card to onboard sound and is supposed to allow sound via hdmi
[02:30:58] Buds: but i cant seem to get it working
[02:31:03] wagnerrp: but... you dont have a HDMI port
[02:31:10] Buds: dvi/hdmi cord
[02:31:27] wagnerrp: granted, single link DVI is very similar to HDMI
[02:32:39] Buds: well this is possible right? iv read a few tutorials on it.
[02:33:41] wagnerrp: if that is actually a SPDIF plug on your video card you are using, its possible
[02:34:02] wagnerrp: although ive never used digital audio, so i cant really advise on how to get it working
[02:34:20] Buds: yea, it is a 2 pin audio cable
[02:34:25] Buds: and i know my 9800 has it
[02:34:40] Buds: i was just thinking mabey im missing something in the mixer mabey?
[02:44:04] Buds: got it, it was muted by default in the mixer.

[16:01:41] beta_: Is there any sort of tweaks I can do to improve the quality of my video from my STB over firewire?
[16:01:54] Weaselweb: anyone also have the problem of the disappeared menu in mythfrontend?
[16:02:29] Weaselweb: i can sometimes restore it by running mythfrontend --reset, but after the 1st restart the menu is blank again
[16:02:33] beta_: Eg, can I change the data_speed in plugctl higher to get better performance?
[16:02:51] beta_: Weaselweb: Video driver issue?
[16:03:08] Weaselweb: beta_: dunno? how can I confirm this?
[16:03:49] beta_: I had to switch from a ATI 9200SE to a GeForce4 4200Ti to get menus in both frontend and backend
[16:04:25] Weaselweb: the driver itself works, X server starts and the background image (depending on the selected theme) is always displayed
[16:04:26] beta_: Try upgrading them, or switching to proprietary drivers if you're using a ATI or nvidia card
[16:04:51] beta_: thats how mine was, it was just mythfrontend/backend that didn't work
[16:05:07] beta_: I'm assuming other opengl programs would have also been broken
[16:05:15] Weaselweb: i'm using nvidia-180.60 which is the most recent one
[16:06:00] beta_: Me as well

[16:07:05] Weaselweb: well they do work (sometimes after a config reset), but it doesn't work the next time the forntend is started again
[16:07:34] beta_: maybe it's a corrupt theme ?
[16:07:48] GreyFoxx: Weaselweb: Disable the OpenGL Painter? Use QT instead ?
[16:08:23] Weaselweb: GreyFoxx: i'm currently starting with this command:exec /usr/bin/mythfrontend -O ThemePainter=qt -l /var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend.log -v important,general (from .xinitrc)
[16:08:32] Weaselweb: so i guess this must be qt anyway
[16:09:06] beta_: I'm running my nvidia card with the gl painter
[16:09:54] GreyFoxx: Weaselweb: Weird. The issue you describe sounds like a GL issue
[16:10:05] GreyFoxx: Never heard of anyone withthe QT painter runing into that
[16:10:34] Weaselweb: strange, any old "untouched" config that still forces opengl?
[16:10:42] GreyFoxx: Nope
[16:10:49] GreyFoxx: ThemePainter is the only setting

[17:50:42] wagnerrp: resolution has nothing to do with anything
[17:50:49] wagnerrp: all you have to worry about is the bitrate of the video

[17:51:16] tux_ (tux_!n=Miranda@mnch-4d043417.pool.mediaWays.net) has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[17:51:29] wagnerrp: realistically on a consumer connection, you probably dont want to be within 80% of your rated upstream
[17:51:39] techqbert: wagnerrp: Very illustrative and informative.
[17:52:12] wagnerrp: mythtv has the capacity to transcode video, so you could do that to drop bitrate
[17:52:24] techqbert: Is there any nice way to downsample videos and then stream them?
[17:52:25] techqbert: Ah
[17:52:37] wagnerrp: also, mythweb has a faculty for transcoding to flash video on-the-fly
[17:53:13] wagnerrp: also, you way want to check out sshfs, it will probably be bit less complicated than OpenVPN+NFS
[17:53:20] techqbert: Really! And I thought you AV guys would send me elsewhere but now I find mythtv has this sort of functionality.
[17:53:46] techqbert: I've toyed with both including sshfs -C (compression) but I haven't pinned them against eachother.
[17:54:50] wagnerrp: using compression on already compressed videos is next to worthless, especially with modern codecs which already have a lossless compression layer
[17:54:55] techqbert: All I got is an arch linux box with a via c7- think that's beefy enough for the quick transcode by mythweb?
[17:55:11] wagnerrp: very doubtful
[17:56:09] stuarta: doubtful? i'd say no
[17:56:23] wagnerrp: youre probably pushing that VIA box pretty hard just trying to decode 480p mpeg2
[17:56:45] wagnerrp: by the way, these transcoding options are only available for recordings, not mythvideo

[19:05:30] Hilikus: sometimes my mythtv records sound really noise. it happens in scheduled recording or livetv and seemengly at random. if its live tv you can just change channels and go back to the same channel and its fixed
[19:05:46] Hilikus: it sounds like when you encode audio in really really low bitrate
[19:06:11] Hilikus: but it's really hard to reproduce so i don't know how to test it. does anyone know what i'm talking about?
[19:06:34] AndyCap: Hilikus: had that happen on my saa7134 card because it was being stupid and trying to autodetect the audio carrier. but not on any other cards
[19:06:55] Hilikus: how can i check if mine is autodetecting?
[19:07:34] AndyCap: what card do you have?

[20:53:26] superdump: i'll have to check, but i think it was some demuxing issue
[20:53:41] kormoc: First post he ever did to a myth mailing list was jine 28th on the proposal to update ffmpeg for 0.21-fixes
[20:53:48] kormoc: Go gossamer threads
[20:53:54] superdump: i know about latm and i think it was something wrong with the ffmpeg mpeg-ts demuxer too and the behaviour was similar in myth

[20:53:57] janneg: gbee: do you use the the remote control
[20:54:01] gbee: janneg: no
[20:54:31] gbee: no active EIT either, will happen within seconds of the backend starting up after a reboot too
[20:54:37] janneg: gbee: options dvb-usb disable_rc_polling=1 should fix the issue for now then
[20:55:06] gbee: janneg: thanks, I'll give that a try

[20:56:12] Dagmar: Distro problem
[20:56:30] Dagmar: *Probably* insoluble
[20:56:35] superdump: Dagmar: was that to me or...?
[20:56:40] Dagmar: To you.
[20:56:54] Dagmar: Problem #1. USB devices think the host has gone away when you suspent
[20:56:57] Dagmar: er suspend
[20:57:05] superdump: i'm using debian unstable at the moment
[20:57:18] superdump: i do have a vanilla 2.6.30 i compiled
[20:57:26] superdump: though i'm using the debian one at the moment
[20:57:35] Dagmar: Problem #2: Some distros actually realize they need to reinitialize the USB subsystem to wake all those devices back up when you return from suspend mode, but not all
[20:57:59] Dagmar: Problem #3: You MAY even need to restart mythbackend when you come out of suspend, so that it can do any high level settings on the tuner cards
[20:58:03] janneg: superdump: demuxing is bad, mythtv's ts demuxer is so out of sync that I decided to start from scratch
[20:58:25] Dibblah: Dagmar: #2 is udev's responsibility.
[20:58:38] Dagmar: All three of those problems together spells F-A-I-L, but you can probably hack around them if you try
[20:58:52] Dagmar: Dibblah: Yep, but I'm not sure it knows that
[20:58:58] Dagmar: :)

[21:00:13] janneg: superdump: it is
[21:00:20] cityLights1: I want it to only send commands to myth
[21:00:25] cityLights1: I read the lirc page

[21:00:48] cityLights1: ok, let me see how
[21:01:51] janneg: superdump: http://mythtv.pastebin.ca/1484979
[21:01:53] superdump: janneg: hmm, interesting considering how bad some ffmpeg devs seem to think it is and how it hasn't been developed to support all new ts extensions and stuff

[21:07:26] superdump: mans wanted to replace it with one he'd written externally

[21:08:56] superdump: yup, i understand

[22:51:37] rnd: that was long.. ie, can i change digital channels on a set-top box remotely from another front end box over the network in anyones experience?
[22:51:59] tank-man: they are networked, you can do anything
[22:52:15] rnd: hm. true, should've seen that coming.
[22:52:39] rnd: is there a mythtv standard, or any kind of standard that has been setup to allow that to be setup in a subjectively time efficient manner?
