[00:10:42] knighthawk: I'm not really going to use it as a DVR

[00:15:18] knighthawk: J-e-f-f-A any suggestions? Really looking for something software based for now.
[00:15:41] J-e-f-f-A: Software based: Twonky...

[04:07:28] Kichigai: Greetings. I've just dusted my Myth box off after a few months of being stowed.
[04:07:54] Kichigai: I've got some issues getting it back up and running, and I'm not sure if I should just download a new copy of KnoppMyth and install that or repair the existing configuration.
[04:08:09] Kichigai: My biggest worry is the hardware might not be able to cope with newer builds of Myth.
[04:08:55] MartinCleaver (MartinCleaver!n=martincl@74.210.61.78) has quit ()
[04:09:35] Kichigai: I'm running a Celeron 600 with a PVR-150 and 256 MB of RAM, backend only.
[04:12:10] clever: my 400mhz P2 is able to record with a pvr150 with no trouble
[04:12:12] Kichigai: I'm also considering possibly bringing my XBox Myth client out of retirement too.
[04:12:14] clever: and can bearly play things back
[04:12:44] Kichigai: So the backend isn't going to be too much trouble, then?
[04:12:57] clever: no trouble at all with hardware encoders
[04:13:24] Kichigai: Now, how stressful is the front-end? I am considering loading it back on my XBox again.
[04:14:13] clever: i havent ran the frontend on that 400mhz recently
[04:14:19] clever: it doesnt have a monitor on it often
[04:14:20] Kichigai: The XBox isn't 400 MHz.
[04:14:40] Kichigai: It's a 733 MHz Celeron/P3, 64 MB of RAM and no video hardware that Linux can use
[04:14:49] clever: ah
[04:14:59] clever: sounds like it would be tricky
[04:15:02] Kichigai: That's the thing.
[04:15:20] Kichigai: I know my laptop can handle it, but having a solution hooked up to my TV would be nice.
[04:15:23] clever: my frontend window is using ~38mb of ram right now(and more in swap)
[04:15:30] Kichigai: The decoding isn't an issue, it's running the front-end
[04:15:45] Kichigai: So it'll be really slow, then?
[04:15:59] clever: enless you trim things down alot
[04:16:09] Dagmar: ...and yet we still get 10 gibbering haploids in here a week who take it as a personal insult when told anything even as mild as "The XBox is slightly suboptimal for use as a frontend"
[04:16:11] clever: i compiled with debug info, so my programs is massive compared to normal
[04:16:36] Kichigai: Well, I'm only using the XBox because I'm a poor starving college student who's using what he's got ;)
[04:16:55] clever: i normaly just watch on the laptop
[04:16:58] Kichigai: Slow I can deal with, five minutes to switch menus, and I'll probably just skip it
[04:18:49] tank-man: use the xbox for xbmc+scripts
[04:19:24] Kichigai: I'm looking at KnoppMyth (I've always used them historically), and it looks like they're not running 0.21 yet. How's MythBuntu these days?
[04:19:58] cesman: Kichigai: THe latest KnoppMyth does include 0.21
[04:20:23] Kichigai: Does it? I'm looking through the changelog and I can't see the phrase "0.21" show up anywhere.
[04:20:39] cesman: I'd know, I did compile it
[04:20:43] Kichigai: Cool.
[04:21:00] Kichigai: In that case, I'm sticking with what's always worked for me.
[04:21:06] cesman: :)
[04:21:14] cesman: Thanks for using KnoppMyth.
[04:21:40] Kichigai: No problem.
[04:22:44] Kichigai: I'd still rather see if I could just revive this install, but I suppose when MySQL won't start up, that's an overall bad sign.

[04:50:21] xal2: why?
[04:50:27] wagnerrp_: you were warned not to run the backend at the same time as mythtv-setup
[04:50:38] wagnerrp_: the backend wants access to the tuner
[04:50:43] wagnerrp_: the channel scan wants access to the tuner
[04:50:46] xal2: okay, i called the backend mythtv setup, my mistake
[04:50:48] wagnerrp_: they cant both have it at the same time
[04:51:06] xal2: mythtv-setup isn't running when i open the backend
[04:51:23] wagnerrp_: so mythtv-setup crashes when you run a channel scan?
[04:51:44] xal2: i didn't try to run mythtv-setup.
[04:52:06] xal2: in ubuntu the backend is called MythTV Backend Setup
[04:52:10] xal2: that's what I ran
[04:52:19] xal2: I get to the backend, do a channel scan and the program exits
[04:52:30] xal2: i can, however, add a channel with frequency manually with no problems
[04:52:41] wagnerrp_: the backend does not do channel scans, mythtv-setup does channel scans
[04:53:08] wagnerrp_: so mythtv-setup (the backend setup program) crashes when you do a channel scan?
[04:53:33] xal2: it exits and goes to fill the database
[04:54:39] wagnerrp_: mythtv-setup does not call mythfilldatabase, but rather tells you that you probably should
[04:54:55] wagnerrp_: of course myth in ubuntu could be doing something funky
[04:55:05] xal2: sorry, i'm not all that experienced wtih mythtv. it does ask if i want to run mythfilldatabase

[04:58:28] wagnerrp_: or have to hope for luck with digital EIT data

[04:59:34] xal2: thanks ^_^
[04:59:35] wagnerrp_: there is a 7 day free trial for SD
[04:59:50] wagnerrp_: and if nothing else, that will load in the channel layout so you dont have to do a manual scan
[05:00:04] wagnerrp_: of course mythtv is next to worthless without scheduling data

Then run through the whole grabber/mythfilldatabase steps again, and see if that one channel ends up with listings
[21:02:43] avihayb: iamlindoro: so I need to give a string as a name to a channle (they are currently 1–41), acording to the strings that appear in the XMLTV?

[21:03:46] iamlindoro: that box should contain the XMLTVid you got from your listings grabber

[21:48:14] Eko: Why would I get "Can't open DVB frontend (<path>)" when I import a channels.conf and not when I do a normal channel scan? I just updated mythtv today.
[21:49:28] directhex: because channels.conf is incomplete. it can't convey all the info needed to tune dvb, especially in countries like the uk
[21:49:49] Eko: So that keeps it from being able to even open the frontend?
[21:50:16] Eko: And does that mean that I'm SOL or is there a workaround, or some way to provide more information?
[21:50:19] directhex: it shouldn't stop the frontend starting, but certaily should break tuning
[21:51:13] Eko: That's fine, I'm content to fix the channel tuning myself, but I have to get the channels into the database somehow, and I have been so far unsuccessful in constructing my own queries to add the info where it needs to go.
[21:52:03] Eko: And there are numerous howtos and documentation pieces on the web which I have read through, so I'm confident that I can debug it once the dtv_multiplex and channel entries actually exist, etc.
[21:52:32] directhex: have you reported bugs as to why the channel scanner isn't sufficient?
[21:54:30] Eko: From what I've seen, such limitations are well known. It's mostly the fact that the channel scanner appears completely incapable of actually determining if there really is something ON the channel or not. Which is debatably outside its purview.
[21:54:37] cdpuk` (cdpuk`!n=chris@91.84.144.73) has joined #mythtv-users

[21:58:44] iamlindoro: and yes, you're right, the channel scanner's sole job is to take the the information advertised by your transponders and commit it to the DB... if it's getting bad info about channels that aren't actually there, that's for your system's engineers
[21:58:57] iamlindoro: The former deficiencies with the channel scanner have fixes in progress AFAIK
[21:59:14] Eko: I wish I had time to be a part of such development =/ Work. Bah.
[22:00:23] Eko: What I did to get my channels.conf is dvbscan and then filter that list by seeing which ones mplayer will actually play. (scripted, of course.)
[22:00:38] Eko: Seems within the realm of what mythtv should be able to do in some sort of automated fashion
[22:00:58] iamlindoro: Why should mythtv have to compensate for broken systems?
[22:01:04] Eko: but my old way of scanning and then manually trying to tune to each one took hours and hours, and after the fourth time (comcast keeps changing things) it got old.

[22:02:33] iamlindoro: just by the time you get to trying to watch them, the VOD stream has ended-- that's how VOD works
[22:02:53] iamlindoro: the channel itself disappears after it's not being watched any more
[22:03:11] iamlindoro: so, in fact, as of the exact moment myth scans, there is a channel with legit content there-- nothing to be done about that
[22:03:21] Eko: directhex: it seems to skip the whole mplex if any of the channels are encrypted or something, because it misses a whole lot when I tell it to ignore encrypted and audio-only.
[22:03:28] iamlindoro: no, it doesn't

[22:04:07] Eko: Then why does it skip channels that are obviously unencrypted?
[22:04:09] justinh: might just need a small tweak in the scanner to skip the VOD stuff
[22:04:33] iamlindoro: justinh, Can't imagine how-- it looks, for all intents and purposes, like any unencrypted QAM channel
[22:04:38] justinh: Eko: because of these things called 'standards' not actually _being_ standards anymore
[22:04:48] iamlindoro: Eko, Obviously unencrypted to *you* doesn't mean they don't have the encryption bit on

[22:05:13] iamlindoro: You are allowing it to scan encrypted channels

[22:05:33] justinh: and maybe your provider only gives you like 15 unencrippled channels
[22:05:42] justinh: that's the rub right there
[22:05:42] Eko: I get 4 channels when I have it skip encrypted and audio-only channels.

[22:05:52] iamlindoro: Again, complain to Comcast
[22:05:53] justinh: or none

[22:06:03] nordle: Evening all, its very quiet at the moment. Because I cant annoy the neighbours with my music :) mythplugins compiled with ogg, yet when try to play file I get "mythmusic decoderogg failed to open"
[22:06:09] iamlindoro: as they are turning *on* the bit that signals encryption, and leaving the *stream* unencrypted
[22:06:32] iamlindoro: So they are *broken*
[22:06:36] Eko: iamlindoro: I have tried. The service people insist that I must have a DTV converter box hiding somewhere because they can't concieve of me being able to watch it without their converter box.
[22:06:45] iamlindoro: Call the company and ask to speak to an engineer, and explain how they're not standards compliant
[22:07:21] Eko: Yeah, they always tell me that engineers are not on hand at the service department.
[22:07:24] iamlindoro: anyway, that's all secondary, as myth works *fine* so long as the broadcaster follows the rules
[22:07:27] justinh: or just flat complain they don't fulfil their legal obligation to provide unencrypted channels on their service. Oh wait – they're not legally obliged
[22:07:47] Eko: iamlindoro: how many providers actually do?
[22:07:56] iamlindoro: and so long as the user doesn't expect myth to be able to do anything about it when they allow it to scan for encrypted channels
[22:08:02] Eko: From my experience pretty much just over the air.
