[00:03:50] Fony_Vaio: anyway, really going this time. night
[00:04:54] Aquahallic: evenin' folks

[00:08:00] juski: pished!
[00:09:06] AndyCap: umm, anyone know why mythtv-setup only displays squares instead of fonts? (tried with both latin1 and utf8 for the db charset so don't think that's the problem)
[00:09:18] juski: when you have a discussion about the rights vs wrongs of Tony Blair vs common sense with a Taxi driver, you *know* you have had too much to drink! hik!
[00:09:22] AndyCap: or rather what font am I missing. :P
[00:09:39] Dagmar: Hey at least the taxi driver didn't try to run you over afterwards
[00:09:42] AndyCap: Does make this message quite funny tho "2007-06–02 02:07:49.735 Switching to square mode (G.A.N.T.)"

[00:11:30] juski: it's a big conspiracy
[00:11:48] Dagmar: You've somehow selected a crazy charset
[00:12:04] Dagmar: THe squares mean there's no glyph in the codepage for the font selected
[00:12:10] juski: see, the folks from Zeta-Reticuli all have this font which looks like rectangles to us humans
[00:13:27] AndyCap: what codepages are supported? or what font is the default for Gant? the locale is en_US.UTF8
[00:15:17] Dagmar: Codepage for the _font_
[00:15:20] Dagmar: Not the theme
[00:15:45] tuxmack: random question, does anyone actually know why mythtv is so slow?
[00:16:12] Dagmar: tuxmack: Because you bought an underpowered machine
[00:16:17] juski: did you know.. that 'theme' is actually the word 'theme' without the last 'e' ?!

[01:33:59] J-e-f-f-A: That's ok, it emails you to renew a couple of weeks in advance.
[01:34:09] gumpish: oh, ok. thanks.
[01:34:40] J-e-f-f-A: They may ask you to fill out a survey when you renew, but they haven't done that (at least to me) in almost a year...

[02:00:29] gumpish: ;_;
[02:03:12] clever is now known as clever[rev]
[02:07:06] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: Are you running 'mythfilldatabase'?
[02:08:03] gumpish: The first time it went through the setup no card appeared after I filled out the properties. when it terminated I clicked "ok" for it to run mythfilldatabase.
[02:08:29] J-e-f-f-A: gump
[02:08:50] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: (oops)... what distribution are you running?
[02:08:59] gumpish: Ubuntu 7.04
[02:09:56] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: I don't think it actually runs mythfilldabase for you, it just 'reminds' you that you must run it, especially if you added or removed tuner cards.
[02:10:07] gumpish: ok
[02:10:22] gumpish: but even before it gets to the point of actually populating the database, shouldn't it list the card I just defined?
[02:10:34] J-e-f-f-A: When you added the card(s) — you went through all the setup pages until it said 'finish', right?
[02:10:42] gumpish: yep
[02:11:04] J-e-f-f-A: And when it went back to the 'add card menu', your card was listed on the screen?
[02:11:10] gumpish: nope
[02:11:21] J-e-f-f-A: Umm... Did you setup mysql?
[02:11:22] gumpish: just "create new card, delete cards on order, delete all cards"
[02:11:31] gumpish: yeah, synaptic took care of all that
[02:11:39] gumpish: dur
[02:11:41] gumpish: I think
[02:11:43] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: I doubt it setup the Myth database...

[02:12:12] ** gumpish consults guide again **
[02:12:16] J-e-f-f-A: where's the guide you're following?
[02:12:23] gumpish: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_Feis . . . nd_Desktop_O
[02:13:05] tuxmack: wow reinstalling things from scratch a bunch makes u so much faster
[02:14:30] gumpish: J-e-f-f-A: hmm, nope, I've followed the guide exactly
[02:16:03] Ryushin (Ryushin!i=proxy@windwalker.openinnovations.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[02:16:12] gumpish: and the prompt really does run mythfilldatabase at the end... (or it's supposed to anyway)
[02:16:42] Ryushin: 2.1 TB of disk space. Yes, now I'll have room for another 6 months of recordings. Yippee.
[02:17:01] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: Run mythtv-setup from a shell window, and see if it logs any errors...
[02:17:24] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: Is that Raid5 I hope?
[02:17:47] Ryushin: Nope, individual disks in independent storage groups.
[02:18:08] Ryushin: RAID was not good for multiple recordings.
[02:18:19] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: Living up to your nic? (Russian Rulette?)  ;-)
[02:19:01] gumpish: ok
[02:19:11] Ryushin: I have two NTSC and two ATSC tuners. When three of them are going with RAID0 then I get IO bound. The storage groups keep everything running happy.
[02:19:45] Ryushin: Worse case if a drive crashes, I loose some shows. It's not like I'm loosing important data. If it's important, I'll burn it to archive.
[02:20:02] Ryushin: Storage groups was a huge blessing for me in my case.
[02:20:11] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: Yeah, I've got 3 NTSC and 2 ATSC... Running 3 500GB drives in a Raid5 for 980GB storage... ;-)
[02:20:38] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: Any luck?
[02:21:15] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: Hey — go to the troubleshooting page .. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV/Install/Troubleshooting
[02:21:21] Ryushin: Well, how much have you stressed it? I pushed mine into the ground with two ntsc recordings, one atsc recording, and watching a HD show. I pretty much screwed up all my recordings in that case.
[02:21:39] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: At the bottom "Mythbackend setup not saving settings"
[02:21:48] Ryushin: Storage groups make sure it sends a recording to a idle spindle.
[02:22:16] Ryushin: And with 6 drives, and a NFS mount for another 500GB, it has enough spindles.
[02:22:37] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: I'm running Hauppauge PVR-500 and PVR-250, plus a HD3000 and HD5500. With all recording, it's well under the 300mbps thruput of sataII
[02:23:41] Ryushin: Yea, but that's theoretical. When you have multiple recordings, your heads are flying around like crazy trying to keep up.
[02:23:44] gumpish: mmm yeah, DB errors all over the place
[02:23:54] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: ..er.. make that 3Gbps of SATA II...
[02:23:55] gumpish: I'll check that URL
[02:24:40] J-e-f-f-A: Seems you unbuntu folks have it easy... an automatic install via synaptic... ;-)
[02:24:57] gumpish: it's the only way to fly
[02:25:01] J-e-f-f-A: gumpish: er... ubuntu...  ;-)
[02:25:01] Ryushin: Just saying, I've hit the limit and I could no longer scale in the same box without storage groups. I was even running RAID0 with 3 SATA2 drives and it couldn't keep up.
[02:25:23] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: Hardware or software NTSC cards?
[02:26:07] Ryushin: Hardware.
[02:26:14] Ryushin: 350 and 150.

[02:27:42] matey: i have a saa7146 card, and i wonder what card type to choose in the setup
[02:27:59] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: And was your sql database on the same disk(s), or a seperate one? (My os & db are on a seperate disk than my recordings)
[02:28:14] Ryushin: Yea, very sure. I think Captin_Murdoch wrote the storage groups for exactly the same reason.
[02:28:22] Ryushin: SQL database is on a different disk.
[02:28:38] Ryushin: OS on seperate disk as well.

[02:29:25] J-e-f-f-A: matey: Is it setup by Linux already (ie, does it appear in /dev/video0 ?)
[02:29:25] Ryushin: Plus the box runs quieter as well.
[02:30:21] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: I'm just surprised you got anywhere near that, especially with sata II... How fast is your CPU, and how much memory?
[02:31:08] Ryushin: 1 GB memory, dual core 2.2 ghz X2.
[02:31:18] matey: J-e-f-f-A: yeah
[02:31:21] matey: it does appear
[02:31:23] spader3d: hi all
[02:31:48] J-e-f-f-A: matey: Ok, try setting it up as a V4L 'framegrabber' card...
[02:32:04] spader3d: how do i fix this protocol version difference error with mvpmc-0.3.3 and myth-0.20?
[02:32:06] Ryushin: It the same reason when I build high end database servers that I put the transactions on different spindles. Try to separate out the databases onto difference spindles as well if they take a lot of hammering.
[02:32:10] matey: i dont think that was in the list
[02:32:13] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: Hopefully I'll be ok then... I'm running 2GB ram with an Athlon 64 x2 4600+
[02:32:32] matey: there was something like v4l analogue or so
[02:32:34] matey: ah btw
[02:32:43] Ryushin: Well, you can easily test it. Start 4 recordings, and watch a HD program at the same time.
[02:32:43] matey: its a dvb card
[02:32:50] spader3d: MainServer::HandleVersion – Client speaks protocol version 8 but we speak 31!
[02:33:00] Ryushin: Look at your log and you'll be seeing IO Bound.
[02:33:19] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: I already did that... when I tested the 5 tuners... ;-) Although I didn't look at the log...
[02:33:55] gumpish: J-e-f-f-A: it's working now, thanks a ton
[02:33:59] Ryushin: Well, if yours can do it, then I'll be impressed.
[02:33:59] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: I'll try again now... ;-)
[02:34:36] J-e-f-f-A: Ryushin: The errors appear on the backend log, or the frontend log, or both?

[08:46:57] xris: hondaman: should be ivtv-firmware-audio, or something like that
[08:47:06] Anduin: hondaman: You should look at the ivtv init section in dmesg (though I'm not aware of a 250 with the audio chip that requires the firmware)
[08:48:25] Tanthrix: hondaman: Check your dmesg, it would probably tell you if it couldn't find the audio firmware

[09:06:45] Anduin: That is true
[09:06:53] hondaman: anduin, would a cable, like the type thats plugged into my stb from the dish work? to plug from the stb out-to-tv into the pvr-250?

[09:08:40] Anduin: hondaman: Hmm, a harder test with sat, it could work though, just use channel 3, could also verify that there really is no audio stream, what Tanthrix said should be true (even when there is no real audio the stream should be there)
[09:09:36] hondaman: well, i know there is an audio stream coming from the stb. if i the rca jack into the soundcard line-in, i can hear the tv
[09:09:59] hondaman: if i plug*
[09:10:19] Anduin: hondaman: yeah, but in the mpeg stream, you can use tcprobe (part of transcode) or mplayer -v to see if it finds a stream
[09:10:54] hondaman: it didnt find a stream in my test.mpg
[09:11:02] Anduin: hondaman: you can also check the volume setting on the ivtv card with v4l2-ctl
[09:11:40] Tanthrix: I'd say turn the computer off, unplug the power, wait 30 seconds, then turn back on at this point
[09:11:56] Tanthrix: I've had issues in the past that could not be fixed by anything but that (including a regular reboot)
[09:12:14] Tanthrix: Just to be sure it isn't some weird quirk
[09:13:02] Tanthrix: (This was with a PVR-150, and an older driver – was fixed with later releases – damned annoying though. Happened everytime I rebooted the system or there was a power outage.)

[12:11:27] blackest: i have other sat recievers but getting mythtv to work with them seems problematic
[12:11:58] blackest: i would need a decent mpeg2 encoder i guess
[12:12:18] GreyFoxx: why ? The dvb signal will already be encoded
[12:12:37] blackest: yes but it doesn't get out most sat boxes
[12:13:00] GreyFoxx: oh, yes, if you are recording from the analog outputs you would kinda want an encoder
[12:13:12] GreyFoxx: but if you have access to FTA channels you can record them directly

[12:25:57] S2: "Wake command for slaves" is the one command executed to wake your Slave backends. This should be a script that contains the calls to wakeup all Slave backend systems.
[12:28:26] sannes: well, it only does that at startup it seems to me?
[12:30:28] sannes: fwiw I want to be able to use mythweb and add a recording, and then when it is going to record; it wakes up one slave and starts the recording ..
[12:31:42] sannes: what seems to be happening now is that when a slavebackend is offline, non of the scheduled recordings on that slave shows up in the status of the master backend ..

[14:16:50] gardengnome: so, there are groups (less /etc/group). your user can belong to a group, right (see 'id')?
[14:17:00] Aquahallic: yup
[14:17:21] gardengnome: Aquahallic: if your user belongs to the "audio" group and members of the audio group are allowed to use realtime priority threads.. what do you get then?
[14:17:36] Aquahallic: the video
[14:17:40] Aquahallic: realtime video
[14:17:52] gardengnome: no
[14:17:59] gardengnome: it's simply a permission thing
[14:18:03] Aquahallic: so do I need to make an entry for @video
[14:18:22] gardengnome: you could be a member of group "foobar" and allow members of "foobar" to use realtime priority
[14:19:05] Aquahallic: audio:!:18:mythtv
[14:19:07] Aquahallic: video:!:27:root,mythtv
[14:19:18] Aquahallic: so mythtv is a member of both
[14:19:57] Aquahallic: yet.. when I edit the limits.conf I get that SUID error in my frontend logs...
[14:20:19] Aquahallic: 2007-06–02 08:08:59.733 Realtime priority would require SUID as root.
[14:20:19] Aquahallic: 2007-06–02 08:08:59.832 Video timing method: USleep with busy wait
[14:21:24] Aquahallic: see what I mean?
[14:21:39] Aquahallic: mythtv is in video and audio groups
[14:22:08] Aquahallic: but I get that message and it reverts back to USleep with busy wait
[14:22:52] gardengnome: care to explain to me how the video timing method and the priority of the display thread are connected?

[14:34:45] Balachmar: because the article on the wiki only explains how to check if it might work, not how to wet it up in mythtv itself

[15:00:46] juski: gardengnome: *currently* unsupported you mean.. look on the bright side ;)
[15:01:02] gardengnome: heh
[15:01:03] cal: xev isnt seeing the volume keys on my remote.. see's most the other keys. do i need to upgrade a driver?
[15:01:21] gardengnome: juski: sometimes i just get weary ;)
[15:01:25] juski: I think the majority of effort goes into getting acpi etc stuff worky on laptops first
[15:02:08] juski: gardengnome: I know. so do I. so do I. definitely whenever I see regression in minimyth.. recurring stuttery playback
[15:02:52] juski: but since I can built it myself I could always try the patch on the -dev list & hard-code the refresh rate to 50Hz :D
[15:03:18] juski: see if that helps the playback probs. it's got to be something to do with that- nvp prebuffer pauses etc are all about the timing
[15:03:46] juski: the "we are too far ahead, slow down.. noooO! speed up! nooo slow down!"
[15:06:44] gardengnome: yay, guess-helper reboot orgy.
[15:10:27] gbee: the buffer code needs some attention
[15:12:00] juski: if I can fix the problem by hard coding the refresh rate detection like Christiaan van Dijk has, then it'll help pin down what's wrong
[15:13:30] juski: though quite why the issue isn't seen on *every* recording is beyond me
[15:13:45] juski: probably bitrate related too somehow
[15:16:47] Balachmar: Hi, can anyone help me with getting mythtv to auto start with acpi?
[15:17:01] Balachmar: I know it is working, but I cannot seem to make mythtv do it
[15:17:20] juski: ah nvram wakeup?
[15:17:29] Balachmar: because if I do it myself, it works, but mythtv doesn't put the time into acpi alarm
[15:17:32] juski: there's an entry in the wiki about that
[15:17:40] Balachmar: no, using /proc/acpi/alarm
[15:18:12] juski: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/ACPI_Wakeup
[15:18:13] Balachmar: problem is, my own computer uses nvram wakeup and it works perfectly, but I don't know how to do the same with acpi
[15:18:50] Balachmar: juski: I found that one, but if you read it, it doesn't actuallu tell you what to put into mythtv-setup
[15:18:56] Balachmar: and that is my problem...
[15:19:20] gbee: juski: something isn't right there – when we start to prebuffer we often never buffer enough before trying playback – now I know Isaac intended to reduce channel change times with the current buffering code, but something isn't being accounted for
[15:19:46] juski: gbee: before playback starts there's a delay of about 5 secs
[15:20:19] juski: gbee: I think the problem is with the maths used to calculate how the player is keeping up. stuarta suspects this too IIRC

[16:18:29] juski: not that there's much point bothering with that now ;)

[16:36:26] greed_: Yeah i've got a few here. the dual wintv one works ok I suppose pvr500 although there are lines through the picture. I read something about it being because it's split and I need an amplifier. Any idea how true that is ?
[16:36:40] greed_: s/split/dual
[16:37:07] fysa: using Fusion5 Gold or something here.. only use it for DVB/QAM though.
[16:37:30] juski: greed_: it's got an internal splitter yeah
[16:37:50] greed_: fysa: So I can use the pro with something like modprobe cx88xx card=whatevernumbergoldversionis ?
[16:37:59] juski: and by 'hybrid' I mean tuner cards which do analogue & digital on the same card
[16:38:17] juski: greed_: chances are you might not even need card=
[16:38:19] fysa: don't know. but needing an amp is fairly common from what I've seen.
[16:38:48] greed_: juski: The Pro defaults to card=0 so it's pretty much useless

[16:39:43] greed_: fysa: So I've got a normal digital box here, any idea of the uhf out would be amplify it enough ?
[16:40:07] fysa: depends on where the channels sit. a 5–1GHz amp was fine for me.
[16:40:15] fysa: 5MHz – 1GHz
[16:40:24] gbee: greed_: the Nova-T 500 has a built in amp, which is only enabled through a module parameter – it's possible the same is true for the PVR 500
[16:40:32] juski: greed_: passthru outputs on boxes tend to be just that – unlike those of VCRs
[16:41:20] greed_: gbee: Any idea of the module name ?
[16:41:26] juski: greed_: even with a good signal I would only split an antenna/cable feed _once_ without an amplifier
[16:41:53] greed_: juski: thanks i'll give that a whirl, I suppose there's no module param to switch of the internal card splitter ?
[16:41:56] juski: greed_: for the pvr500, the module name is *ivtv*
[16:42:07] gbee: greed_: it's not a module, but a parameter to the module you are using and no I have no idea what it might be for a PVR 500 or even if it has a LNA built in

[17:09:29] juski: wouldn't use the bleb script – it went down for months a while back
[17:10:43] gbee: when you run mythtv-setup and select it as your source you should find that you need to Alt-Tab to the console you started mythtv-setup from, there you need to specify the channels you want to download data for
[17:11:17] AndyCap: Do the uk grabbers have equally useless .xmltv configfiles? i.e. just channel 1, channel 2 #channel 3 ...?
[17:11:48] gbee: oh nevermind, follow the guide in the wiki – it pretty much covers everything
[17:12:24] gbee: AndyCap: it contains the list of xmltvids for the channels we want – not exactly useless as xmltv can't function without it
[17:14:38] AndyCap: gbee: well. if it actually used the xmltv id's and not the ordninal number of the id's (which isn't accessible anywhere except by digging through the grabber perl code)
[17:16:03] AndyCap: gbee: --list-channels won't show it. and in the channel editor and database it's channel Id's that are referred.
[17:17:04] AndyCap: but I guess xmltv is too entrenched in well, everything to change it to use id's instead of numbers.
[17:17:36] AndyCap: then it would just need to be internally consistent in the grabber, and not with a config file written by some other tool.

[17:20:50] AndyCap: I guess there's hope of hacking a patch for grabber and submitting it then I guess.
[17:21:02] AndyCap: It's broken as it is already, with some channels missing an Id
[17:21:41] gbee: yeah it would be great if the xmltv devs would push towards using the IDs for all external bits, then myth could just feed the grabber the list of channels to grab directly from the database
[17:22:31] AndyCap: uh-oh, I just pictured a unified config for xmltv.
[17:23:18] AndyCap: so it would list all the channel ID's it knows about, and figure out which grabbers to use on it's own..
[17:24:10] AndyCap: would need a source qualifier of some sort though.. and rewriting of a lot of apps. :(
[17:24:43] AndyCap: oh, well. I'll stick with trying to patch the grabber I use to use xmltv id's
[17:25:31] AndyCap: before I go all architecture astronaut, and run out of air.
[17:27:45] AndyCap: on a related note. moving my recorded programs to the new backend was as easy as pie. :)
[17:29:28] Fony_Vaio: got a little nuisance with the new setup. My main fe seems to freeze video (usually screen goes black) during live tv at seemingly random intervals (usually every 30mins or so). If i exit live tv, and go back in, it's fine.
[17:29:39] CJDBunny: thanks guys, all works grand now
[17:30:01] CJDBunny: only thing left to do is get lirc working with my serial ir receiver

[17:34:07] AndyCap: juski: Heh, I'm not in the uk, but does sound interesting. related to the sky box channel list right?
[17:34:50] AndyCap: there's only two major cable providers here. but I think they have 5–10 different channel frequency lists depending on which smaller cable provider they bought out
[17:35:47] Fony_Vaio: juski: sounds good re: script.
[17:36:08] Fony_Vaio: will it add all the pretty icons on its own? :D

[17:42:29] planktonboy: hi all
[17:43:36] planktonboy: not having much luck getting this mythweb secure login working properly. I've managed to get the login working okay, but cant stream any music or recordings
[17:44:01] planktonboy: if anyone has some ideas or an up to date guide for this I would appreciateit
[17:47:18] AndyCap: planktonboy: does the streaming pass a file or an url to the player app? if it's an url. does the player know how to authenticate?
[17:47:45] planktonboy: hi AndyCAp
[17:48:30] planktonboy: AndyCap, I have tried several players, some are asking for authentication the others just error out

[17:49:22] planktonboy: its obviously something to do with the way the new svn mythweb scripts handle streaming I guess
[17:49:37] AndyCap: planktonboy: Just guessing here, but support for digest auth may be poor in players? since, well, you're probably the only person on earth using it. :P
[17:50:16] planktonboy: Ive tried following several guides, but nothing has worked
[17:50:36] planktonboy: AndyCap, Ive gone back to htpasswd
[17:50:45] planktonboy: still not getting streaming
[17:51:03] planktonboy: done a complete image backup and started again
[17:51:41] CJDBunny: is it possible to have a multi region mythdvd setup?
[17:52:27] GreyFoxx: mythdvd has no concept of regions
[17:52:57] planktonboy: hi xris, do you have any ideas on why I cant get mythweb to stream music or recordings using htpasswd
[17:53:20] xris: planktonboy: because most players don't support it
[17:53:30] planktonboy: ah
[17:53:39] planktonboy: ok...
[17:53:45] planktonboy: any player that do?
[17:54:18] xris: not sure
[17:54:31] xris: that's why the stuff in svn has specific "allow" flags for the streaming URLs
[17:55:03] planktonboy: yeah..I seen that settings page for streaming
[17:55:13] xris: no, it's in the mythweb.conf file
[17:55:28] xris: the one in mythweb settings is for http
[17:55:33] xris: er, http/https
[17:55:51] planktonboy: ah you mean locationmatch
[17:55:55] juski: gawd I seriously need some canine hair right now!
[17:56:00] CJDBunny: i guess i'm looking for a dvd driver that supports multi region rather than having just 4 permitted changes

[17:56:26] GreyFoxx: CJDBunny: That's the hardware, not the driver
[17:56:30] planktonboy: and
[17:56:36] planktonboy: <LocationMatch .*/music/stream.php>
[17:56:46] juski: CJDBunny: not so much hardware/driver – more like *firmware* !
[17:57:03] CJDBunny: can you recommend a device?
[17:57:08] juski: regionfree.org or whatever – $searchengine is your friend!
[17:57:11] planktonboy: if you mean that I need to enable them, I tried that but apache failed on restarting
[17:57:56] juski: CJDBunny: you have to upload a hacked firmware to the DVD drive
[17:57:57] CJDBunny: :)

[18:04:46] juski: I don't care if all my content says 'juski' inside it

[21:53:03] Tanthrix: Why is there a storage group in the db for one of my front end machines that points to /mnt/store/? Is that some kind of automatic function?
[21:53:43] gardengnome: yes.
[21:54:00] gardengnome: do you only have that for one of your machines?
[21:55:30] Tanthrix: Right now I have three in the db: /mnt/store for the front end that was generated automatically, /mythstore/recordings, and /mythstore
[21:55:42] gardengnome: nice
[21:55:50] gardengnome: does /mnt/store show up in mythtv-setup?
[21:55:53] Tanthrix: The last one I made by accident when I reinstalled my backend and didn't call the computer the same hostname
[21:56:12] Tanthrix: Well, it was the same host name, just not the domain name
[21:56:28] Tanthrix: So I reset everything up, but I forgot that I had it set to /mythstore/recordings and not /mythstore – I plan to fix this shortly
[21:56:44] Tanthrix: In the storage group I only see one, /mythstore
[21:56:54] Tanthrix: Listed under default

[22:00:06] Fony_Vaio: hrm, fe is acting weird. sound pauses and video slows, then goes back to normal. sometimes screen blanks and can only be restored by exiting live tv and re-initialising.
[22:01:07] hugolp: Fony_Vaio: I get that too sometimes
[22:01:17] hugolp: I though it was because my memory thing
[22:01:22] hugolp: but I guess its not
[22:04:08] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: hrm, interesting... lemme check my backend logs.

[22:18:54] Fony_Vaio: me too, 7600GS
[22:18:59] hugolp: actually not
[22:19:06] hugolp: the 7100 GS is in the other
[22:19:14] hugolp: this one got a 6XXX
[22:19:21] Fony_Vaio: hrm
[22:19:23] hugolp: nvidia too
[22:19:28] Fony_Vaio: still, nvidia binary module
[22:19:53] hugolp: yep and its a version 6 but with mpeg2 acceleration
[22:20:06] hugolp: though I heard the nvidia drivers dont use it much
[22:20:09] hugolp: dont really know
[22:21:15] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: i thought the mpeg2 acceleration was only leveraged by the purevideo codec under win32?
[22:21:50] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: when i fiddled with the audio settings it seemed to help, something to do with audio buffer maybe?
[22:22:07] Fony_Vaio: what audio hardware do you have?
[22:22:38] hugolp: its an Asus barebone and I am using the motherboard audio
[22:23:40] hugolp: havent check more
[22:24:22] Tanthrix: MPEG2 acceleration is accomplished via XvMC under linux, which nvidia supports on everything from the GF2
[22:24:34] Tanthrix: Different from purevideo, which is not supported in any way.
[22:24:55] hugolp: what is purevideo?
[22:25:06] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: hrm, i'm using audigy 2 zs, so maybe keep looking at the video side for now.
[22:25:30] Tanthrix: And it's not automatic – you specifically have to specify using the XvMC decoder in mplayer / myth / xine / whatever
[22:25:35] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: it's a hw accelerated mpeg2 decoder for win32, by nvidia for 6, 7, and 8 series nvidia cards.
[22:25:44] Tanthrix: x264 as well
[22:25:46] hugolp: ok
[22:26:04] Fony_Vaio: yah, purevideo HD does new yummy things
[22:26:21] Tanthrix: Gparted is one nice app.
[22:27:10] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: are you using xvmc?
[22:27:17] hugolp: that purevideo is not suported under linux is a nvidia driver problem or something else?
[22:28:04] hugolp: libmpeg2
[22:28:08] hugolp: Fony_Vaio:
[22:28:10] tuxmac1: ah, and i have returned after clearing up the ATI drivers problem only to realize that a blue screen means the overlay is actually being drawn...
[22:28:48] hugolp: Fony_Vaio: actually I am going to change that to see if it does any good
[22:28:49] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: no, purevideo is just a win32 app which takes advantage of some nvidia hardware. apparently according to Tanthrix xvmc takes advantage of hw acceleration with the nvidia module.
[22:29:16] Tanthrix: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/XvMC for more info and all that
[22:29:20] tuxmac1: anyone in here ever solve their tuner not having input even when its plugged in?
[22:30:10] hugolp: so in resume and without getting technical the nvidia linux driver can take all the juice out of the nvidia hardware?
[22:31:45] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: some of the processing requirement for mpeg2 decoding will be shouldered by the gpu, basically.
[22:32:46] Fony_Vaio: changing chans is hella slow, too..
[22:33:07] Dagmar: It takes time for encoder buckets to fill
[22:33:39] hugolp: Fony_Vaio: changing to XvMC has improved things a lot
[22:33:50] hugolp: its actually working fine now
[22:34:12] hugolp: maybe its just luck and it will happen again, will see
[22:34:37] hugolp: but I have done a lot of channel changing that was when I was getting the problem and fine
[22:39:26] Fony_Vaio: interesting
[22:39:32] Fony_Vaio: mine is also looking ok now
[22:40:16] hugolp: what have you done?
[22:40:18] Tanthrix: XFS does delete noticable faster, cool.
[22:41:00] Fony_Vaio: Tanthrix: yes, I've noticed that, too.
[22:41:23] Fony_Vaio: switched the /home part on backend to XFS, works well.
[22:41:37] hugolp: thats another one
[22:41:52] hugolp: I have all with ext3 but wanted to know if there are better options
[22:42:16] Tanthrix: I just switched my recordings directory to it, since I just suddenly realized that I had no reason not to
[22:42:45] Tanthrix: Not sure about my main partitions since I might want to back them up with norton ghost, but I'd never bother with that on my storage drive
[22:44:43] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: changed to standard decoder, seems ok now.

[22:47:25] Tanthrix: Is there a way to force all livetv recordings and other such things to expire? I'd like to clean up my folder, and get rid of any files that are no longer referenced in the database
[22:47:31] hugolp: Fony_Vaio: I have stoped testing but its working fine
[22:47:36] Tanthrix: (With the exception of actual recordings)
[22:47:40] Fony_Vaio: although, i think i have problems with signal quality, i'm running three cards through cheap splitters, a long (10m) length of cheap coax to one old socket on a rf distribution system serving all the apartments in this block, from an old antenna that predates dvb on the roof.
[22:47:55] asd: nn /etc/modules doesn't seem to be working
[22:48:12] hugolp: Fony_Vaio: amplifiers are cheap
[22:48:13] Fony_Vaio: Tanthrix: i thought live tv recordings auto expired?
[22:48:27] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: wouldn't that just increase noise?
[22:48:40] hugolp: depens where you put the amplifier
[22:49:06] asd: my remote was working before in the old version of knoppmythtv
[22:49:09] hugolp: if you put the amplifier just after the antena it will (almost sure) decrease the noise
[22:49:16] Tanthrix: Fony_Vaio: They do, but not immediately sometimes
[22:49:40] hugolp: because you increase the signal and then the next noise youll get through the cable will do almos no harm
[22:49:47] Tanthrix: And also, anyone know why I'm getting numerically numbered recordings in a recent SVN? I thought that was change to put titles and such into the file names
[22:49:53] hugolp: and also youll have a lot more signal to split
[22:50:00] hugolp: so less noise as well
[22:50:01] asd: modprobe bttv card=70 doesn't work anymore
[22:51:18] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: i was actually looking at lengths of CT100 cable, using all F connectors and stuff. shouldn't cost much, but should reduce noise, all that along with decent amp should resolve all these problems.

[22:52:26] hugolp: Fony_Vaio: what about other options to ext3? what can you tell me?
[22:53:21] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: just xfs and jfs seem good for dealing with big files from what i'm aware.
[22:53:40] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: apparently reiserfs can be good for dealing with lots of small files.
[22:54:05] hugolp: mmm
[22:54:39] hugolp: so if I have a hard drive that is only for mythtv recording files, videos, music and torrent it would be xfs right?
[22:55:00] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: might be, worth looking into at least.
[22:55:18] hugolp: is there a big improvement compared to ext3 (what I have now)?

[22:55:52] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: mainly fs operations like deletion seem to be quicker
[22:56:57] asd: i don't understand this thing work with previous version od knoppmyth
[22:57:30] hugolp: ok, last question, I guess Ill have to delete the info to use another filesystem right?
[22:57:59] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: not necesarily. you could migrate it

[23:07:50] Tanthrix: Forever, right?
[23:08:25] Tanthrix: I think I setup a mythrename.pl on a cron job, then forgot about it. Just setup my new system and I was wondering why I was getting non-human readable names ;)
[23:08:58] Tanthrix: Though, if I understand correctly now, it's not generally wise to do that is it? Better to make a "pretty" directory and just put symlinks in there
[23:09:53] gardengnome: why?
[23:09:55] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: weird, i think i had a similar problem with my old backend (p4 prescott 3.2ghz 1gb ddr400 (memtest ok), seem to remember the backend crashing a few times with similar errors.

[23:21:23] Honk: <hugolp> then why does my one core ahtlon has it? <-- cuz it's enabled in the kernel
[23:21:29] Honk: that's all the line says
[23:21:30] Fony_Vaio: yes, you can run a smp kernel on a single core / single proccessor system, just won't be used afaik.
[23:21:43] Honk: Fony_Vaio: correct :P
[23:22:35] Fony_Vaio: hugolp: it's a kernel config option, basically. When you compile your own kernel there is a .config file that you can specify lots of options such as smp, which modules to compile, whether said modules should be compiled into the kernel image or not, etc.
[23:23:24] Fony_Vaio: most dists come with kernels configured with fairly broad options to make them compatible with as much hardware as possible.
