[00:00:16] Dr_willis: Hmm. My hard drive for / is getting a bit full. gotta delete some shows. there an easy way to just add a 2nd hd. and let mythtv use both drives for storage?
[00:00:30] kormoc: Setup a LVM, aye
[00:00:55] kormoc: but you'd need to set the new drive up as a LVM, move all your data over to it, and then reformat the old drive and add it to the LVM
[00:01:01] Dr_willis: bla. :)
[00:01:11] Dr_willis: wasent wanting to use a lvm. heh heh.
[00:01:39] kormoc: you could do the same via raid
[00:01:45] kormoc: but other then that, no, you can't
[00:01:49] Dr_willis: I got a 2nd hd with my own videos (avi) on it with lots of space.
[00:02:02] kormoc: (short of using nuvexport to export them out of myth to the other drive)
[00:02:14] Dr_willis: i could always move the /myth/whatever dir to be a link to some place on the hd.
[00:02:31] tcpsyn: thats how I'd do it
[00:02:34] kormoc: sure
[00:02:49] kormoc: there's plenty of options if you don't mind doing it yourself
[00:03:21] Dr_willis: I am doing it myself. :)
[00:03:23] rogue780: what file contains the device configuration for lirc? (as far as port, etc)
[00:03:36] Dr_willis: I could just watch some shows and delete them heh.
[00:03:55] Dr_willis: actually if i converted them to .avi or some other format. it could save a lot of space also.

[00:06:31] tcpsyn: rogue, did you look at the link I gave you?
[00:07:12] rogue780: indeed
[00:08:03] rogue780: he says that in his /dev directory he gets lircd and lirc files. I only have an lircd file. makes me think maybe the device config isn't setup right
[00:08:21] rogue780: not sure if the darn serial port is COM1 or COM2. I'm using a via epia CN1000EG board
[00:09:28] tcpsyn: I don't know man.
[00:10:06] Dr_willis: Hmm.. all righty got space freed up.. but i notices this... odd file.. in /myth/mythburn it seems to have a 'space' or 'null' for a filename.. and the contents are...cat ' ' --> Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of

[00:10:27] kormoc: rogue780, you need to load the lirc_serial kernel driver up, which is what you tell which comm port the receiver is on, which should create the /dev/lirc/0 device
[00:10:47] Steve132: hi

[00:11:06] Steve132: I am a total mythtv newb...can someone help me with some things?
[00:11:19] kormoc: you can ask and see if someone knows
[00:12:54] Dr_willis: Heh – ive done a lot of learning an reading the last 2 weeks or so with my MythTV box.
[00:12:54] Steve132: ok...well...I have an external channel changer set up over serial
[00:13:08] Steve132: and I can test it over command line
[00:13:12] Steve132: and it works great
[00:13:26] Steve132: but the same command I put into the mythtv-setup
[00:13:37] Steve132: and for some reason my mythtv won't change channels
[00:13:48] Steve132: when I am "watching live tv" how do I change channels?
[00:13:58] Steve132: or is there another way to test the channel change script
[00:14:34] kormoc: if you run it by hand
[00:14:40] kormoc: aka, ./changechannel 12
[00:14:45] kormoc: if it works, it should work fine for myth
[00:15:09] Steve132: ok...welll....it doesnt
[00:15:16] tcpsyn: heh
[00:15:21] Steve132: what could cause that?
[00:15:27] kormoc: tons of things
[00:15:32] kormoc: your script could be broken
[00:15:35] kormoc: your lirc could be broken
[00:15:41] kormoc: you cound be sending the wrong codes
[00:15:43] tcpsyn: lirc work for the frontend?
[00:15:47] Steve132: yes
[00:15:48] kormoc: or the transmitter is broken
[00:15:53] Steve132: and I am using the keyboard too
[00:16:35] Steve132: lirc works for the frontend...(it might not be configured maybe)
[00:16:39] Steve132: I can push numbers
[00:17:04] Steve132: and they show up on the screen
[00:17:13] Steve132: but the channel doesn't change
[00:17:31] Steve132: like.. its like I push them but they dont actually get confirmed and just fade away
[00:18:05] kormoc: well, if your script doesn't actually change the channel on the cable box or satalite box, then that's what you need to fix
[00:18:21] Steve132: hmm...I am just using directv.pl
[00:18:22] Steve132: and it does
[00:18:28] Steve132: I can run it over the commmand line
[00:18:33] Steve132: and it works great
[00:18:45] kormoc: so ./directtv.pl 12 changes the box to channel 12?
[00:18:46] [jasper]: ok finally
[00:18:54] [jasper]: I got my phone to send signals to mythtv :P
[00:18:59] [jasper]: now all I need to do is program the keys
[00:19:01] kormoc: Nifty Jasper!
[00:19:07] Steve132: kormoc: right
[00:19:11] [jasper]: yeah
[00:19:15] Steve132: actually
[00:19:15] [jasper]: took me some time to get the sockets working
[00:19:30] [jasper]: because I didn't knew what the mythtv server was expecting
[00:19:38] [jasper]: line-end or not...etc etc
[00:19:43] ** kormoc nods **
[00:19:55] [jasper]: utf-8 or not ..
[00:19:58] [jasper]: that kind of stuff :P
[00:20:15] Steve132: ./directv.pl box_type D10–200 setup_channel 12
[00:20:20] [jasper]: I'm making it for the nokia n80

[00:21:00] kormoc: Steve132, you see, myth only does the channel number, you'll need to write a little script that takes that number and converts it to that command
[00:21:02] [jasper]: no silly webbrowser remote control :P
[00:21:05] [jasper]: a real java app :/
[00:21:52] [jasper]: I only need to figure out how in the name of god I'm gonna make it be able to use the keyboard

[00:22:13] Steve132: wekk
[00:22:19] Steve132: *well,
[00:22:21] [jasper]: need to put some kind of keyboard mode on it
[00:22:22] Steve132: what I did
[00:22:29] [jasper]: and then let it wait for 2 seconds for every key or stuff
[00:22:32] Steve132: is in the channel change box
[00:22:34] [jasper]: count the number of presses
[00:22:41] Steve132: I typed everything except the last nu,ber
[00:23:03] [jasper]: it would be nice though kormoc ...if I can use they keyboard also from my phone
[00:23:27] kormoc: Steve132, that should work as far as I know, but maybe not, as it seems to be recommended against quite often
[00:23:48] kormoc: [jasper], Yeah, that'd be great. I'd give it a try, but my phone doesn't support any networking access
[00:25:18] [jasper]: I wanna be able to see the program guide on my phone
[00:25:22] [jasper]: when I'm in a foreign country
[00:25:25] [jasper]: and then schedule a recording
[00:25:26] [jasper]: :P
[00:25:44] [jasper]: I wonder if I could make my phones screen into a frontend
[00:25:59] Steve132: ok...
[00:26:01] Steve132: well...
[00:26:18] Steve132: can you run me through what one would do to use mythfrontend to change the channel?
[00:26:25] [jasper]: type a number?
[00:26:28] [jasper]: on your keyboard?
[00:26:36] Steve132: like...something that SHOULD invoke the channel change script but doesn't?
[00:26:41] Steve132: thats it?
[00:26:53] Steve132: so just put the numbers
[00:26:55] Steve132: ok
[00:26:56] Steve132: thanks

I have a master backend and a seperate slave backend, each running their own frontend on the same hardware (i.e., 2 frontends total)
[02:00:36] kusznir: When I run mythtv-setup on my slave backend, on page 4 with the wakeup commands, am I configuring the slave backend, master backend, or how the master backend interacts wit the slave?
[02:01:28] kusznir: Ideally, I want to tell the master backend how to wake up the slave when it needs it (for another tuner).

If I have a sat source at SD, and a subset of those channels available via over-the-air HD programming via a seperate tuner, will 1) myth reconize the HD channels are the same as the SD channels via DirecTV?

[14:46:50] IamEthos: those are errors I get from the mythtv backend when I try to watch live tv
[14:47:36] Bernardo: PiXeLStick: I don't know, I'll have to check at home which version is being used by ubuntu, that's the distro I use to build mythtv
[14:47:39] GreyFoxx: IamEthos: just a guess, sounds like you told mythtv-setup that your tuner was a v4l card when in fact it's a pvr/mpeg2 card or vice versa
[14:48:26] IamEthos: GreyFoxx, that sounds correct.
[14:48:43] IamEthos: I thought that the card was auto-detected as v4l
[14:49:04] IamEthos: I have a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR USB2

[14:50:21] GreyFoxx: I've never used one of those personally so I can't say 100% what it should be, but the error you posted is generally from picking the wrong type
[14:53:26] IamEthos: GreyFoxx, in the scan channels section of mythtv-setup, it says "Failed to open the card" after I switched settings. Previously it was able to scan all of the channels.

[15:09:27] GreyFoxx: only thing that "does it's own thing" is the xbox360
[15:10:15] Bernardo: .) typical
[15:10:33] Bernardo: what is the djm mount, don't know that one?
[15:11:35] GreyFoxx: djmount is a linux tool. I "mount" a upnp mountpoint and all upnp servers dynamically show up under it
[15:11:43] GreyFoxx: so I djmount /mnt/upnp
[15:11:55] GreyFoxx: and from there I can navigate to any of the upnp servers I have running and all of their content
[15:12:39] Bernardo: cool, I'll have to set that up under kubuntu, will let me test more stuff without disturbing the family
[15:13:03] Bernardo: I wonder why I didn't find anything when I googled for "upnp av linux" :)

[16:27:06] sigger: TinheadNed: well you could use mysql from the command line, but that's sort of a pain. phpmyadmin works if you have php or don't mind installing it
[16:27:40] TinheadNed: sigger: I've looked at the cmdline, and I'm not able to get the gist of what's going on – I'm just looking at phpmyadmin now
[16:27:47] TinheadNed: trying to psych myself up :)
[16:28:01] sigger: phpmyadmin much easier if you haven't poked around the db before
[16:28:28] TinheadNed: i'm just surprised there's no pgadmin GUI based thing
[16:28:46] TinheadNed: I tried rekall, which is supposed to do it, but it crashes when the mysql plugin loads :?
[16:31:29] tracy: TinheadNed: if u have a windows machine, and want to figure out how to open the ports needed for remote admin (if they closed) have a look at quest.com for the free mysql TOAD software
[16:32:19] TinheadNed: tracy: the sql ports are open to my mythtv box, as my web server connects to it for mythweb
[16:32:53] ollekalle: all: I am having troubles with my PVR-500 card. It seems that I cannot sucessfully scan for channels. (the card works to some extent since I do see noice-crap) Any suggestions on what can be wrong?

[17:11:29] TinheadNed: 'lo meshugga
[17:11:31] TinheadNed: oops
[17:11:33] TinheadNed: 'lo mezoko
[17:11:40] mezoko: Does mythtv have an opition to record video?
[17:12:35] TinheadNed: mezoko: . . yes . .
[17:12:56] mezoko: TinheadNed, do you kno what format it record in?
[17:13:27] TinheadNed: mezoko: it can record in a few different formats
[17:14:07] mezoko: TinheadNed, if I was to hook a vcr up to the tv tuner instead of a tv attentia that should still work right?
[17:15:29] TinheadNed: mezoko: probably – mythtv would be overkill for recording off a vcr though
[17:16:01] TinheadNed: mezoko: mplayer could do that for you
[17:16:13] mezoko: TinheadNed, yeah,
[17:16:35] mezoko: I was told i could actually do cat /dev/video > file.mpeg (or whatever the tv tuner card is)
[17:17:58] TinheadNed: mezoko: you can for a video source that is mpeg (such as digital tv) or with a tv card that does mpeg compression for you
[17:18:05] TinheadNed: otherwise it'll be raw and uncompressed
[17:18:46] mezoko: TinheadNed, it would say video format: MPEG2 in the spec if it did the conversion right?
[17:18:58] TinheadNed: mezoko: what would?
[17:19:09] brad_mssw: mezoko: what capture card do you have?
[17:19:24] mezoko: I wanna buy this one
[17:19:24] mezoko: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815116633
[17:19:48] brad_mssw: yes, that has an MPEG2 encoder
[17:21:04] brad_mssw: I personally have this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815116631
[17:21:07] mezoko: then once its in mpeg2 format all I need is something like dvdauthor to burn it to the disk right?
[17:21:33] brad_mssw: (because I wanted the remote)
[17:21:42] mezoko: ahh ok
[17:21:48] mezoko: yeah I don't need nor really want the remote
[17:21:54] mezoko: a remote would be nice but not worth the extra money
[17:22:03] mezoko: brad_mssw, I'm mainly getting this to copy vhs
[17:23:29] brad_mssw: yeah, that card would work fine ... and yes, you can use dvdauthor to lay out the menus, etc
[17:23:53] mezoko: brad_mssw, would that do the converting of the mpeg2 to dvd stuff?
[17:24:33] brad_mssw: it would create the directory layouts, you'd still need to generate the dvd iso image using mkisofs then burn it (pretty sure dvdauthor doesn't create the image for you)
[17:24:46] TinheadNed: mytharchive could help there
[17:25:02] mezoko: would most dvd player be able to play a mpeg2 file?
[17:25:40] brad_mssw: dvd's native format is mpeg2
[17:26:52] fryfrog: mezoko: but you couldn't just burn an mpeg2 to a dvd unless it was *specifically* designed to read them
[17:27:03] fryfrog: you'd need to burn it in the DVD format with the VIDOE_TS and shit
[17:27:22] mezoko: so how do I convert the mpeg2 to the video_TS format stuff
[17:27:57] fryfrog: anything that is designed to do it
[17:29:20] fryfrog: i like nero, but haven't used it to *make* a dvd myself
[17:29:33] fryfrog: there are probably plenty of linux tools to turn mpeg2 -> proper dvd
[17:30:08] brad_mssw: mezoko: dvdauthor should do that for you ... it just separates the stream into .vob files as necessary .. .vob is mpeg2-ts and the card outputs mpeg2-ts
[17:30:28] mezoko: ahh ok, thanks brad_mssw , thats what I've been trying to figure out, heh
[17:31:05] fryfrog: brad_mssw: and wont the "mytharchive" plugin do something like that?
[17:31:19] brad_mssw: fryfrog: he doesn't seem interested in mythtv at all ...
[17:31:23] fryfrog: OHHHHH
[17:31:28] brad_mssw: fryfrog: he's just wanting to convert VHS -> DVD
[17:31:33] brad_mssw: fryfrog: myth is overkill there
[17:32:04] fryfrog: ah, gotcha
[17:32:10] TinheadNed: brad_mssw: fryfrog: don't suppose you guys would do me a quick favour and do a df -h on your mysql dirs for mythtv?

[17:33:19] fryfrog: mezoko: you don't *need* a tuner card to do wha tyou want

[17:33:55] fryfrog: and i'm not sure about using them in linux either :(

[17:34:39] brad_mssw: TinheadNed: then delete the bin files
[17:34:57] TinheadNed: commented out
[17:34:57] brad_mssw: TinheadNed: there is actually a flush command as well you could use, if you have a cron task to do it

[17:37:14] TinheadNed: done the flush thing
[17:37:15] brad_mssw: TinheadNed: or maybe it was "RESET MASTER"
[17:37:26] brad_mssw: crap, I forget, I just disabled it myself

[17:48:45] mezoko: Is it possible to compress a mpeg file?
[17:48:54] GreyFoxx: via upnp servers and clients auto advertise the services they provide on the network, be it a firewall or a media server
[17:48:54] fryfrog: mezoko: its possible to compress anything!
[17:48:57] fryfrog: even cheese!
[17:49:13] mezoko: fryfrog, well how would you compress a mpeg if the file is a mpeg?
[17:49:17] GreyFoxx: like windows shares, they broadcast what they are and what they support to the network
[17:49:29] TinheadNed: mezoko: if it's already compressed mpeg2, you wouldn't get much benefit – you could transcode it to mpeg4 or something
[17:49:36] TinheadNed: GreyFoxx: clever
[17:49:39] GreyFoxx: Most of the time it's just a link to a webpage on nthe device giving device stats
[17:49:54] mezoko: TinheadNed, would something like dvdauthor be able to work with mpeg4?
[17:50:10] fryfrog: mezoko: maybe you should descri be your goal instead
[17:50:22] TinheadNed: mezoko: it would recode it straight back, so you'd waste time & cpu cycles
[17:50:47] mezoko: fryfrog, well if a vhs is like 3 hours and the dvd only holds 120 minutes that might be a problem
[17:51:01] TinheadNed: GreyFoxx: i'd really like to get some time free and help dev for mythtv, but I'd be worried about running svn on my essentially production system
[17:51:04] TinheadNed: as it were
[17:51:10] fryfrog: mezoko: ahhh, but you recall that a vcr is not fixed in the amount of time it holds!
[17:51:13] fryfrog: neither is a dvd
[17:51:22] GreyFoxx: Get a DVD player that handles xvid/divx and make the video an xvid
[17:51:25] fryfrog: if you reduce the quality of the mpeg2, you can get more data on it
[17:51:40] mezoko: fryfrog, how could i do that if I already have the mpeg file?
[17:51:43] GreyFoxx: TinheadNed: I run svn on my "production" machine, my wife and kid have no idea :)
[17:51:48] fryfrog: and if you are bringing in data from a PVR150 card, you'll end up with about 2.2G
[17:51:51] GreyFoxx: they just know I update it once a week
[17:51:54] fryfrog: per hour, i think
[17:52:09] fryfrog: so you turn down the bitrate (since it sonly coming from tape anyway) and get say... 1g / HR
[17:52:14] fryfrog: OR 500MB/HR
[17:52:15] fryfrog: oops
[17:52:29] fryfrog: you can fiddle with the mpeg2 bitrate until you get an image that is acceptable to you
[17:52:45] fryfrog: and you can always re-encode mpeg2 to a lower bitrate, but better to get it right the first time
[17:52:45] TinheadNed: GreyFoxx: no breakages then?
[17:53:16] mezoko: fryfrog, so thats alldone with mencoder
[17:53:52] mezoko: ?
[17:54:04] fryfrog: mezoko: i am not sure, but i think it depends
[17:54:22] fryfrog: mezoko: if you get a pvr-150 card, you should be able to tweak the bitrate that the mpeg2 encoder is using
[17:54:22] mezoko: well I don't think it possible to do with cat :P
[17:54:30] mezoko: oh maybe i can
[17:54:34] fryfrog: mezoko: well, not with cat
[17:54:41] fryfrog: but with say, ivtvtune.pl or something like that
[17:54:48] mezoko: oh ok
[17:54:59] fryfrog: cause you'll also have to tell it to read from the RCA (or svideo or RF) inputs
[17:55:16] mezoko: ahh ok
[17:55:20] fryfrog: mezoko: so if it were me, i'd fiddle around until i got something i could live with (i mean, the vcr quality isn't that high to start with)
[17:55:23] mezoko: it doesn't seem that hard
[17:55:36] mezoko: yeah
[17:55:40] fryfrog: then just always record at that bitrate. at 1G / hour, you could get ~4 hours on a dvd
[17:55:48] GreyFoxx: TinheadNed: Nope
[17:55:49] fryfrog: on a DL dvdr, you could get 8–9 hours
[17:55:56] GreyFoxx: and it's generally very stable
[17:56:02] TinheadNed: GreyFoxx: hmm, well I'll think about it :)

[21:49:58] Max0: ah right
[21:50:22] Max0: thanks
[21:50:24] juski: it's a bit late in the day to be buying anything which does analogue unless you plan to capture from a set top box
[21:50:44] Max0: nope
[21:50:48] Max0: saying that tho
[21:51:01] Max0: there is a card in a mates pc which im fixing
[21:51:05] juski: never saw the point in the hybrid cards to be honest – it's not as if you can use both halves at the same time
[21:51:19] juski: so. do you have anything in /dev/dvb ?
[21:51:33] juski: if there's just the one card there should at least be /dev/dvb/adapter0
[21:51:49] Max0: $ ls /dev/dvb
[21:51:49] Max0: adapter0
[21:51:56] juski: all good so far
[21:52:02] juski: you're on ubuntu right?
[21:52:14] Max0: kubuntu yeah
[21:52:17] juski: okees
[21:52:20] Max0: only been on it a few days
[21:52:34] Max0: so im a bit of a linux noob but i know a bit
[21:52:43] juski: in mythtv-setup did you tell it that the tuner is a dvb tuner?
[21:53:04] Max0: i first had it as analog
[21:53:08] juski: right
[21:53:17] Max0: then added another card which was the digital one
[21:53:26] juski: did you restart mythtv-backend after changing the settings?
[21:53:30] Max0: yeah
[21:53:34] juski: cool
[21:53:43] Max0: ill double check the setting...
[21:53:45] juski: now the boring bit
[21:54:00] Max0: also when i went to scan it didnt "scan"
[21:54:14] juski: right
[21:54:19] juski: is this mythtv 0.20?
[21:54:47] juski: or to put it another way, are you using official packages and which version of kubuntu are you on?
[21:54:57] juski: i.e. Dapper etc...
[21:55:26] juski: Dapper's official packages are only at 0.18
[21:55:26] Max0: 6.10 i think
[21:55:49] Max0: and i just did apt-get install but ill double check for you
[21:55:50] juski: did you add anything to the sources list in /etc/apt ?
[21:55:55] Max0: nope
[21:56:03] juski: right so chances are you're on 0.18
[21:56:07] juski: not to worry
[21:56:29] juski: the boring bit I referred to before is the bit where you confirm the tuner works in linux before going ahead with mythtv ;)
[21:56:33] juski: sudo apt-get install dvb-utils
[21:56:41] BULLE: i thought that ubuntu was supposed to fix the issue with debian, that it took ages for packages to get update
[21:57:01] juski: ^^^ this will install a suite of useful programs you can use to flex the card/drivers
[21:57:27] juski: BULLE: it's all up to the folks who make the packages and the 'committee' who decide what's 'stable' enough

[22:48:10] juski: bear with it – this isn't something you need do very often
[22:48:45] juski: plus it's really important to know the tuner works properly before going with mythtv
[22:49:10] juski: tzap saying FE_HAS_LOCK is a good sign, but not absolute
[22:49:39] defend: anyone know what driver you need for a fussionhdtv rt card?
[22:49:49] Max0: k
[22:50:03] juski: defend: tried looking at www.linuxtv.org ?
