[00:17:33] ciphernemo: Is someone willing to help walk me through configuring MythTV to work with a MySQL database? The last thing I did was do a make install on both lame and mythtv, as well as install MySQL 5 and change the mysql root password. The online guides are either incomplete when it comes to MySQL and MythTV (ie: assume I'm so mysql expert), or don't apply to my distro (ubuntu dapper).
[00:18:58] aboutblank: ciphernemo, i _think_ you just have to set a mysql root password, and the mythtv installer will create the DB
[00:19:56] ciphernemo: aboutblank: every guide I've seen talks about doing a #mysql -u root [-p] < mc.sql
[00:20:15] ciphernemo: aboutblank: and I can't find an mc.sql file anywhere
[00:21:58] ciphernemo: aboutblank: I do remember that mythtv has a dbfillsomething command that it runs itself... so can I skip worrying about this mc.sql script?
[00:22:00] aboutblank: ciphernemo, the dapper guide does not mention this.
[00:22:58] aboutblank: ciphernemo, actually.. according to the dapper guide, you should keep the root mysql password null
[00:23:14] ciphernemo: aboutblank: I've already changed it
[00:23:43] ciphernemo: aboutblank: this was according to mythtv's official docs
[00:23:58] aboutblank: argh, i don't know
[00:23:59] xris: ciphernemo: mc.sql creates the db and assigns the permissions.
[00:24:08] xris: once you do that, the backend can do the rest
[00:24:28] aboutblank: he doesn't know where to find mc.sql
[00:24:31] aboutblank: and neither do it
[00:24:32] aboutblank: i***
[00:24:40] xris: updatedb && locate mc.sql
[00:24:44] ciphernemo: actually... it was according to fedore mythology, not official docs, got it confused
[00:24:50] xris: or dpkg --help
[00:25:14] ciphernemo: I've searched and I have no mc.sql
[00:25:46] aboutblank: is it in the package?
[00:25:52] xris: mine's in: /usr/share/doc/mythtv-0.21/database/mc.sql
[00:25:59] xris: for fedora
[00:26:10] xris: in the source, it's at mythtv/database/mc.sql
[00:26:20] ciphernemo: xris: that's what fedora mythology guide told me to find... but in dapper I dob't have that
[00:26:41] xris: ciphernemo: means whoever made the packages f'd up and forgot to include the file
[00:27:42] xris: http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/browser/trunk/mythtv/database/mc.sql
[00:27:48] xris: that one will work just fine even for non-svn

[00:28:20] ciphernemo: actually, I just found mc.sql.....
[00:28:25] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: Yep... for over a year now.
[00:28:41] ciphernemo: it looks like the .config and make installed mythtv in the current folder instead of where it should be

[00:29:08] xris: ciphernemo: you're compiling AND using packages?
[00:29:20] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: i'm trying to make an XFS LV... so i pvcreate /dev/hda3 and /dev/hdb1. then i vgcreate volume /dev/hda3 /dev/hb1
[00:29:23] aboutblank: follow me so far?
[00:29:48] ciphernemo: xris: I've installed mysql 5 from a package.... I'm installing mythtv 0.20 from source
[00:29:56] ciphernemo: and lame from source
[00:30:00] xris: ciphernemo: gotcha.
[00:30:12] xris: `make` doesn't actually install...
[00:30:18] ciphernemo: make install does
[00:30:38] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: Kinda... I had to follow 'howto' docs to do it myself... So you've got two Logical Volumes, hda3 and hdb1...
[00:30:42] xris: and it should put it into /usr/local/*
[00:31:03] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A, but when i try to do the vgcreate, it says "no physical volume read from /dev/hda3 /dev/hda3 not identified as an existing physical volume unable to add physical volume"
[00:31:25] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: (er, make that physical volumes)
[00:31:26] ciphernemo: xris: it put it into the current folder (i was using /usr/packages, a folder I added)
[00:31:47] xris: huh?
[00:31:52] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: i don't understand what you mean.
[00:32:04] xris: don't break lfs.. let it install where it wants to or you'll have a huge pain compiling plugins, etc.
[00:32:06] ciphernemo: xris: it put it into /usr/packages/mythtv-0.20
[00:32:20] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: Sorry, I'm thinking out-loud. Looking at my config atm...

[00:33:18] ciphernemo: xris: I downloaded the tarball in to /usr/packages for myself... and ran the make from there. If I let it do its own thing (I didn't specify where it should go), it should install itself into a predefined directory upon #make install ... correct?
[00:33:49] xris: ciphernemo: gotcha.. (I usually put source into /usr/src, but that's just me)...
[00:33:52] ciphernemo: provided I did a ./configure and make
[00:34:03] xris: yeah, if you `./configure && make && make install` it should go into /usr/local/*
[00:34:11] ciphernemo: xris: I'm a linux noob, so I put downloaded stuff where I can remember :)
[00:34:14] xris: though you should ./configure with the appropriate options.
[00:35:13] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: Ok, I've got 4 physical volumes — /dev/hde1 , hdf1, hdg1, hdh1. And one Logical volume.
[00:35:14] ciphernemo: here's official MythTV docs: If you are using the tarball, then unpack it: $ tar -xjf mythtv-0.20.tar.bz2 ; $ cd mythtv-0.20 ; $ ./configure
[00:35:18] ciphernemo: are those instructions wrong?
[00:35:25] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: What does /usr/sbin/pvdisplay show you?
[00:35:43] ciphernemo: then: $ qmake mythtv.pro
[00:35:43] ciphernemo: $ make
[00:35:53] ciphernemo: and finally #make install

[00:37:54] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: -not you, I've got 4 physical volumes. Are hda3 and hdb1 blank?

[00:38:11] ciphernemo: hehe
[00:38:19] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: hdb1 and hda3 are formatted to XFS

[00:38:32] sunnyhours4130: Anyone know any tips for getting the 1152x864 resolution to work with tv out with the nvidia drivers and x11? the desktop doesn't fit on my monitor when i have tv enabled.... need to set down to 1024x764
[00:38:38] ciphernemo: xris: so, can you help me correct this?
[00:38:38] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: And nothing for hdb1 from pvdisplay?
[00:38:50] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: that's correct
[00:40:10] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: Sounds like you need to create the LVM Physical volume for /dev/hdb1 ... Then you'll be able to create the LVM Virtual volume of both drives.
[00:40:23] xris: ciphernemo: like I said.. ./configure with whatever options you want
[00:40:24] sunnyhours4130: ... not sure if i'm explaining that right. when I'm in 1152x864 I can scroll the mouse off the side of my monitor and the whole display shifts over
[00:40:28] xris: then make, then `make install`
[00:40:37] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: odd though, because vgcreate complains about hda3 being the problem.
[00:40:55] ciphernemo: xris: I'm clueless about what I should do with that, what options to set, or even how to
[00:41:02] xris: ./configure --help
[00:41:10] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: how would i go about making an LVM PV for hdb1?
[00:41:22] ciphernemo: thank you captain obvious :P
[00:41:34] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: I'm looking for a howto now... one sec...
[00:42:42] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: Actually it's simple... pvcreate /dev/hdb1
[00:42:52] Tuju: hi
[00:43:07] Tuju: what I'm supposed to put into THEME settings ?
[00:43:14] Tuju: MM_THEME_URL="auto"
[00:43:15] Tuju: MM_THEME_NAME="Iulius.sfs"
[00:43:20] Tuju: should these work with ramfs?
[00:43:57] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: done. and it does show up in pvdisplay. but i still can't do "vgcreate my_volume /dev/hda3 /dev/hdb1"
[00:44:10] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: http://ds9a.nl/lvm-howto/HOWTO//cvs/lvm-howto . . . 3.html#ss3.1
[00:44:23] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: What's the error you're getting?
[00:44:30] xris: ciphernemo: well, "what you want" depends entirely on what you want to plug mythtv into (firewire, dvb, etc).. most of those options are pretty well documented.
[00:44:46] croppa (croppa!i=user72@135.27.233.220.exetel.com.au) has quit ("Konversation terminated!")
[00:44:54] xris: also, you should really check out mythtv from the 20-fixes branch in svn instead of using the tarball. lots of fixes have gone in since the tarball was released.
[00:45:11] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: well.. pvdisplay uses the path /dev/evms/hda3. i tried this in vgcreate and it worked.
[00:45:38] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: Strange...
[00:46:28] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: let me try fdisking
[00:47:13] ciphernemo: xris: all I'm going to use mythtv for is recording and watching TV with snap2it schedule updates. All I'm having problems with right now is building mythtv and configuring it with mysql
[00:48:57] ciphernemo: xris: skip the fixes stuff, I'll worry about that later. I'm tired of getting suggestions unrelated to my problem, no offense. Any way to help me with the ./config and such needed to build mythtv in default directories?
[00:51:10] jams: ciphernemo- which part of configure && make && make install is breaking ?
[00:51:38] frankrizzo: hi, I am having a lot of trouble finding a usb IR receiver to buy, the ones on lirc.org appear to cost around 150 US which doesnt make much sense to me
[00:51:46] frankrizzo: can anyone point me in the right direction?
[00:52:17] jams: frankrizzo- for usb I suggest the streamzap remote. Its a great remote and comes with a usb reciever
[00:52:27] J-e-f-f-A: frankrizzo: If you're in the US, check ebay for a Microsoft MCE remote & receiver — should be about $40usd
[00:52:30] jams: it's $30
[00:52:47] ciphernemo: jams: the #./config and make without any options seems to be setting-up mythtv to be installed in the current directory instead of /usr/local
[00:52:59] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: How's it going?
[00:53:12] ciphernemo: jams: ...when I finally do a make install
[00:53:13] frankrizzo: jams, and thats compatable with lirc?
[00:53:22] jams: frankrizzo- yep
[00:53:24] aboutblank: J-e-f-f-A: well, vgdisplay shows a volume of the appropriate type, so i'm going to proceed and see what happens
[00:54:11] frankrizzo: excellent, thanks
[00:54:12] sunnyhours4130: jams that thingie work with TVs too? or will I need multiple remotes?
[00:54:56] jams: it's a non programmable remote, so its cant control your tv power or anything like that.
[00:54:56] J-e-f-f-A: aboutblank: kewl. You just have to do the 'lvcreate' and 'mke2fs' now then... (see the link I sent you above)

[00:56:03] sunnyhours4130: yeah, good question

[01:06:17] HAIDEN: i have a card with fm/tv in on it, however its not labeled as to what it is. It has a phillips stamp on the metal case surrounding the coax inputs and says "STB copyright 1998"
[01:06:22] HAIDEN: i know stb was part of another company, but i forget which... does anyone know?
[01:06:24] koen: teach lirc the codes
[01:06:39] sunnyhours4130: Haiden did you put it in your computer?
[01:07:00] HAIDEN: sunnyhours4130, yes but unfortunatly im on a windows box right now and cant do any lspci
[01:07:07] sunnyhours4130: oh, ha
[01:07:08] koen: stb sounds like dish network stuff
[01:07:11] sunnyhours4130: guess that rules out dmesg too
[01:07:24] jams: ciphernemo- I dont' know squat about ubunta and what package holds libqt-mt.so . But that is the file that's missing right now
[01:07:38] sunnyhours4130: the metal case on the coax receiver doesn't really have much to do with the card itself
[01:07:45] koen: jams: check if the lib-mt-so exists
[01:07:46] ts0: well, looks like i'm shit out of luck with myth
[01:07:55] sunnyhours4130: no, you're never out of luck!
[01:07:58] ts0: kernel+ivtv+amd64 brokenness :(
[01:07:59] jams: koen: why my system works just fine
[01:08:00] HAIDEN: sunnyhours4130, yes, but i thought maybe it would give me an idea of what chipset it uses
[01:08:00] koen: if not link whatever lib-mt-.so.* to is
[01:08:03] ts0: http://ivtvdriver.org/pipermail/ivtv-users/20 . . . /004343.html
[01:08:07] ts0: ^- out of luck
[01:08:07] sunnyhours4130: you just have limited performance
[01:08:18] ts0: in this case, performance is limited to 0
[01:08:20] sunnyhours4130: not to me anyhoo. sorry bub
[01:08:21] sunnyhours4130: haha
[01:08:24] ts0: :)
[01:08:47] nordle: roger55: DVB: registering frontend 0 (Conexant CX22702 DVB-T) Thanks! I had it down that dvb=digital and v4l=analog, but when I read the dvb modules within the v4l section of the kernel config, it got me confused! This card cannot use v4l right? ie /dev/video0 is a no no? Just curious to know really all the options availble.
[01:09:03] ciphernemo: ts0: performance would be limited to 32-bit I take it, then?
[01:09:17] sunnyhours4130: bah 64 bit is a bunch of hooey
[01:09:40] ciphernemo: 64-bit is just more bandwidth... doesn't equate to performance per say
[01:09:51] koen: ts0: via chipset, shuffle cards?
[01:09:54] ts0: ciphernemo: i'm working on getting an i686 kernel together now
[01:10:12] ts0: ts0: yeah, it's an MSI board, VIA chipset, PVR-150s
[01:10:14] HAIDEN: sunnyhours4130, looks like stb is out of business
[01:10:18] ts0: s/ts0/koen
[01:10:26] ciphernemo: ts0: can't you use a regular amd kernel instead?
[01:10:28] ts0: that's ok, i'll try with the i686 kernel and see if I can get somewhere useful

[01:10:53] ts0: ciphernemo: that would be different than i686 how?
[01:11:06] HAIDEN: sunnyhours4130, its basically like a happauge pvr 150 as far as inputs
[01:11:29] sunnyhours4130: haiden whatcha mean? just has the same ones inputs at the pvr 150? or its an identical card?
[01:11:33] aboutblank: how do i determine the filesystem of a volume?
[01:11:53] sunnyhours4130: dmesg might show it
[01:11:55] HAIDEN: sunnyhours4130, same inputs... i dont think its identical
[01:11:58] roger55: nordle, I don't understand, but glad it worked. :)
[01:12:08] sunnyhours4130: oh, the inputs are pretty standard from one brand to another i think
[01:12:21] ts0: aboutblank: is the volume mounted?
[01:12:33] ciphernemo: ts0: i686 would be Intel... amd can emulate x86 hardware, but why when you have amd acceleration in kernels?
[01:12:38] sunnyhours4130:
[01:12:39] roger55: nordle, the video0 might be for some other input orsomething
[01:13:03] aboutblank: sunnyhours4130, thanks.. dmesg shows XFS :)
[01:13:06] ts0: ciphernemo: because i'm trying to go down to least common denominator
[01:13:26] ciphernemo: ts0: for your distro, don't you have a 32-bit amd kernel?
[01:13:29] nordle: roger55: /dev/video0 is, as I understand it, the default device for v4l whereas dvb stuff all go in /dev/dvb
[01:13:59] ts0: ciphernemo: i'm on gentoo
[01:14:14] ts0: ciphernemo: so yes, I do

[01:14:38] ts0: ciphernemo: yes, I have
[01:14:52] ts0: ciphernemo: you're misunderstanding, there is brokenness with ivtv and the kernel version i'm running on amd64
[01:15:06] ts0: ciphernemo: firmware problems with the cards arise after you've tried to look at the video once
[01:15:06] HAIDEN: sunnyhours4130, i found this site that has winxp drivers for the card... when i did the autodetect with this program, the chipset shows as BT878.... does that have an onboard encoder?
[01:15:14] ciphernemo: ts0: what version of ivtv?
[01:15:16] ts0: ciphernemo: i686 is reported working with the same hardware
[01:15:23] ts0: ciphernemo: 0.7.x
[01:15:38] sunnyhours4130: haiden not sure, i'll check google though =)
[01:15:52] ciphernemo: ts0: ahhh... have you tried a 0.4.4 to 0.4.7 version with your kernel?
[01:16:06] ts0: i was under the impression 0.4 was not supported with 2.6.17+
[01:16:12] ts0: incorrect?
[01:16:34] ciphernemo: I'm running 2.6.15 and it works fine... but that might be true
[01:16:59] ts0: ciphernemo: 2.6.16 and below
[01:17:10] ts0: .16
[01:17:12] ts0: .15, even
[01:17:13] ts0: ivtv stable version 0.4.7 released (ChangeLog). This release is for the 2.6.15 and older kernels ONLY.
[01:17:31] ciphernemo: ts0: so why would you change your kernel to i686... you could back peddle the ivtv and kernel version without going to i686?
[01:17:56] ts0: ciphernemo: because it's reported that 0.7/i686 works on amd64 with the pvr150

[01:18:39] ciphernemo: ts0: that sounds scary to me

[01:59:36] ciphernemo: jengo: Those new MPEG4 cards looks sweet
[01:59:38] jengo: well, thanks for the help guys :P
[02:00:00] jengo: are the mpeg4 cards out ?
[02:00:03] ciphernemo: koen is the man :)
[02:00:06] jengo: ... and do they work with linux lol
[02:00:19] koen: hahah, have a 350 & a 150
[02:00:31] ciphernemo: jengo: not sure how compatible they are... but mpeg4 lets you record hdtv... or rather higher res tv
[02:00:58] jengo: eh ... gonna be quite a while before I can afford an HDTV ... they are still over $1000 ... not worried about record HT
[02:01:22] ciphernemo: I got a PVR-500 because I wanted 2 tuners and didn't want to install two PVR-150 or PVR-350s... I really like Hauppauge
[02:01:54] koen: i once had a sales meeting with a guy from hauppauge
[02:02:09] jengo: Funny thing is, I have 2 DVRs from the cable company in my house ... so I can record 2+ shows at once. Disadvantage is, I can't really keep that stuff or watch it during flights and what not on my mac
[02:02:27] koen: i quote: we make tv cards, to watch tv, and only tv
[02:02:34] ciphernemo: koen: hehehe
[02:03:23] jengo: oh ... the PVR-500 is only $140 from newegg ... thats not bad at all
[02:03:31] ciphernemo: they need to make a PVR-750... two 350's put together :)
[02:03:35] koen: better get an amp. too
[02:03:48] ciphernemo: jenog: yup, price went down... I paid a little more from newegg months ago
[02:04:08] jengo: I was kinda expecting a good card to cost like $300 or somethin ghehe
[02:04:18] koen: i have a win tv usb 1.1 fore sale: $15
[02:04:22] ciphernemo: jengo: look closely at the newegg listing for it
[02:04:34] ciphernemo: jengo: I bet at that price it's a "white box"
[02:04:38] jengo: besides the fact its out of stock ... hehe
[02:04:48] jengo: white box ?
[02:04:55] koen: oem
[02:05:02] ciphernemo: jengo: that's all you'll need for linux anyways, but doesn't come with remote and other stuff that retail boxes do
[02:05:12] jengo: Hmmm good point
[02:05:31] jengo: Ya, I am still unsure what I am doing remote wise ... I thought about getting one of those fancy logitech remotes
[02:05:35] ciphernemo: jengo: it's like a step up from oem... but still includes FM ant., input PCI slot, and cd for windows ppl
[02:05:55] jengo: I am trying to build a large media library, my goal is to encode all 500 DVDs so I can watch them "on demand"
[02:06:48] koen: going to bed now

[03:25:07] Pio: my problem was my master backend thought it was a slave backend
[03:25:16] Pio: changed the ip address in mythtv-setup and all was well
[03:25:55] Spicerun: BTW, does anyone know if a 10Mbyte cache, 7200 RPM Sata disk is faster than a 7200 RPM 8Mb cache PATA disk? I was surprised to find btw that I can only access the SATA disk with 16-bit accesses instead of 32-bit accesses.

[04:52:05] ServerSage: I've only seen it with .20.
[04:53:03] adante: ServerSage: well .19 was extremely unstable in general for me (i use dvb with poor reception, myth was not so forgiving back in those days)
[04:53:41] adante: but yeah same issue – nothing in the logs seems to indicate anything
[04:53:43] ServerSage: slide23: Have you looking in your database? Are they listed in there?

[04:56:15] ServerSage: slide23: What exactly is the problem? I didn't get to read it before.
[04:56:34] ServerSage: DigerLAP: It's not in the front end. Instead of running mythfrontend, run mythtv-setup
[04:56:45] slide23: well I have my programs in the Recording Schedule, but they arent in the Upcoming Recordings
[04:56:45] ServerSage: adante: What version you running?
[04:56:59] DigerLAP: this is the MAIN box, imonly running one myth in this house
[04:57:29] ServerSage: slide23: I ran into that when my database got hosed.
[04:57:48] slide23: ok, so if i just re-add them, then they get scheduled
[04:57:49] ServerSage: DigerLAP: Yes, and on that box, run mythtv-setup from the command line.
[04:58:08] ServerSage: slide23: I had to run the mysql database fixer thingy. I can't remember the name of it off the top of my ehad.

[05:01:09] DigerLAP: debian
[05:01:17] DigerLAP: its was a knoppmyth install
[05:01:31] DigerLAP: fuck im issuing a reboot

[05:02:08] ServerSage: adante: Yeah, but that was when gentoo was a little younger too. Portage has come a long way.

This is US – comcast analog cable in Washington State to be exact. Does anyone have a quick guess about why the upper channels are straight st

[05:58:23] MindHack: hmm, recordings page is populated as usual
[05:58:28] MindHack: just nothing on upcoming recordings
[05:58:47] MindHack: upcoming recordings has 4 checkboxen at the top, and a table header
[05:58:52] MindHack: just nothing in the table
[05:59:07] word: maybe the table corrupted?
[05:59:10] xris: does the backend list any upcoming recordings on the status page?
[06:00:01] MindHack: heh, status page is dead, apparently I need to re-allow url file access
[06:00:10] MindHack: maybe it was the etc-update I did that caused this problem
[06:00:32] xris: could be. restarted apache, backend, etc?
[06:00:36] MindHack: yup
[06:00:50] MindHack: lemme re-modify that file

[06:02:21] DigerLAP: suggestions?
[06:02:38] xris: DigerLAP: did you su ?
[06:02:42] MindHack: xris: status page fixed, no shows scheduled for recording. Damn, I had like 10 in there
[06:02:46] DigerLAP: yes i did that
[06:02:50] DigerLAP: just su not su -
[06:03:04] xris: DigerLAP: that might still kill access to the X server. try sudo instead
[06:03:11] xris: or just run it as the user (doesn't really matter in this case)

[06:04:48] DigerLAP: well it says root@mythtv#
[06:04:53] xris: loki_en: sounds to me like it's still using us_bcast or something like that.
[06:04:54] xris: or another device on the cable (vcr?) is interfering
[06:05:05] xris: DigerLAP: again. did you log in as root, or use su?
[06:05:11] DigerLAP: used su
[06:05:14] xris: su can block X connections
[06:05:30] loki_en: I don't have anything else on the line. But, it's set at "Default". Should I change the format to "us-cable"?
[06:05:42] MindHack: xris: although, there exists duplicates in the recording schedules page, from all the times that I kept issuing commands
[06:05:43] DigerLAP: well i exited SU and still same thing
[06:05:51] DigerLAP: wont run mythtv-setup
[06:06:08] xris: DigerLAP: and you can run other apps like xev ?
[06:06:08] word: DigerLAP: export :0 (or whatever your display is) ...i think...
[06:06:16] DigerLAP: sudo did something once I was out of SU
[06:06:16] xris: MindHack: odd
[06:06:25] xris: loki_en: should be us_cable
[06:06:56] DigerLAP: it says im not in the sudoers file
[06:06:57] loki_en: got it. Thanks.
[06:07:09] xris: loki_en: works?
[06:07:10] MindHack: xris: would it make sense to just wipe the db?
[06:07:17] word: MindHack: not really..
[06:07:25] xris: MindHack: are you at a point where you could start over from scratch?
[06:07:27] word: MindHack: do you have phpmyadmin?
[06:07:47] word: would be easy to check the database for errors that way
[06:08:07] MindHack: word: nope, but I suppose I can do stuff on the commandline. xris : pretty new setup, my only concern is if its a bug with this release, how old is the ebuild, would you know?
[06:08:40] xris: no clue
[06:08:52] xris: doesn't sound like a mythweb problem, though.
[06:08:57] xris: all of that data comes straight from the backend
[06:08:58] word: MindHack: ah i had to rebuild my recordedseek table a while ago because it got corrupted...forgot the command..but something similar may have happened to you..
[06:09:01] MindHack: ah, looks like the date is the 10th
[06:09:12] MindHack: wait.....nevermind
[06:09:14] MindHack: 6th
[06:09:17] MindHack: yesterday
[06:09:56] word: DigerLAP: not in the sudoers file? did you try sudo export :0 ?
[06:09:56] MindHack: xris: so the upcoming recordings page and the recording schedules page draw from two different tables?
[06:10:01] xris: MindHack: could wipe the program table and rerun mythtvsetup
[06:10:10] word: MindHack: my guess is yes
[06:10:12] xris: upcoming recording comes from the backend, not the db
[06:11:02] MindHack: so recording schedules comes straight from the db, and upcoming recordings comes from the backend, which gets info from the db I presume?
[06:11:26] DigerLAP: it says im not in the sudoers file so now what can i do
[06:11:47] word: DigerLAP: did you try export :0 or mythtv-setup as regular user?
[06:12:06] loki_en: us-cable works – and thanks
[06:12:10] xris: MindHack: yeah, sort of. the upcoming recordings comes from the scheduler, which is a huge calculation that gets some of its info from the db
[06:12:24] xris: DigerLAP: just run it as yourself without any su or sudo
[06:14:31] ShockValue: got it workin.. needed the Option "UseEdidDpi" "FALSE" thing

[06:40:20] xris: ok, I have no recollection of writing this. weird.
[06:40:50] Anduin: xris: Yeah, right now all recordings have the video directory for their full path
[06:41:49] Anduin: I let Mr. Hyde do a lot of coding for me as well, sometimes when I look at MythVideo my heads just hurts.
[06:41:58] xris: heh
[06:42:11] xris: give me examples of what data you're getting.
[06:42:14] xris: or an example
[06:43:59] Anduin: xris: basically a new Recording is created with /var/media/video//1006_20061007232900.mpg as the filename, basename never gets set (the current code expects a URL for filename)
[06:44:36] Anduin: xris: local_path is set to video_dir + basename and used down in the load_file_info function
[06:45:05] Anduin: xris: In this case local_path is always just videodir (which the nuv info loader hates)
[06:45:08] xris: ok, so instead of pulling out the url, I just have to pull off the video_dir

[08:45:00] Anduin: Tuju: There is no .spec in the myth tarballs anyway
[08:45:15] Tuju: I made one (or few).
[08:45:50] Tuju: Anduin – I have it running already – until I noticed that someone went and modifed already tagged release and broked the protocol.
[08:45:51] Anduin: Tuju: why not just use atrpms?
[08:46:03] Tuju: because they are not for my centos.
[08:46:44] Tuju: i have centos 4 and x86_64 arch. tried atrpms, that was nogo.
[08:47:44] Anduin: Stuck making your own tarball then
[08:47:57] Tuju: I have 0.20 tarball and my cross compiled frontend is compiled against that too. and that combination doesn't work.

[08:48:26] Anduin: Uh, if built from the same tarball it will work

[08:48:59] Anduin: Tuju: svn export it, tar it up
[08:49:17] Tuju: Anduin, it should be built from same *release* but can't tell as you can't trust to the version numbers.
[08:49:21] Tuju: Anduin, ack.
[08:49:40] Tuju: nothing have to be done to the snapshot before tarballing?
[08:49:44] Anduin: The version numbers are mostly meaningless, there is a protocol and binary version number that must match as well.

[08:50:24] Anduin: Tuju: I don't make the releases, that is best guessing.
[08:50:52] Tuju: exactly – and I don't build nor create my frontend. Without versions all we're doing is guessing.
[08:51:00] Anduin: Tuju: Yeah, whole long thread about in on the mail list, I think it (the complaining about it) is just silly.
[08:51:26] Tuju: and that's the reason someone invented those versions at the midevil days in the first place.
[08:52:20] Tuju: Basically this project doesn't respect the shit's worth of it's users.
[08:53:02] Anduin: It just expects them to be somewhat less lame, if you are going to use -fixes, use it consistently. If you stuck to actual released tarballs you would never see the problem.
[08:53:48] Tuju: Anduin – the fact is that I CANT USE it consistently. Even I would want, but I can't. I have to rely on versions what other people tell me.
[08:54:11] Tuju: I can't build the hole world starting from hongkong everytime I need a piece of software.
[08:55:39] Tuju: forcing everybody – the endusers to come down to the asm level on your product tells that 'this is not meant to be take-it-and-use-it product, but we wanna you to spend days after days hacking to get it into use'
[08:56:32] Tuju: the fact is that if I now take a snapshot and tarball it – HEAD has probably passed the point where protocol version was 31 which i need.
[08:56:34] Anduin: Not being able to use the same -fixes everywhere is just a packaging problem, if 0.20.1 were released many people would be asking why it doesn't work with 0.20, and it would still be a packaging problem.
[08:57:10] Tuju: Anduin, no it's a co-operating problem.
[08:57:39] Tuju: if people can't share their work and rely on version numbers, you're forcing everybody to work alone. that's it.
[08:58:04] Anduin: Tuju: even if that were the case (it isn't -fixes is still at 31) you could checkout the exact same svn revision as whatever you needed
[08:58:40] Tuju: considering on how many platforms and projects this is used, one would would think that it's selfexplitanary but aparent it aint.
[08:59:14] Tuju: Anduin excatly – I would, and I can't tell what version my co-worker in minimyth used.

[09:06:09] RaYmAn-Bx: Tuju: I do agree that breaking compatability in a -fixes or similar branch is bad, but the problem you and other people are having is obviously different versions. Not the same released tarball.

[09:07:30] Tuju: RaymMan-Bx Yes, we seem to have different versions – and we shouldn't because we used the same version numbers – what I assume was tagged into svn.
[09:07:56] Tuju: these are the fscking basics of sw dev what we're talking about here.
[09:08:00] Tuju: really.

[09:08:21] Anduin: Yes, the basics dictate that you pull the same code, you violated that and would rather complain.
[09:08:47] Tuju: if you wanna break the ABI's and protocols, just label versions more verbosely and inform people, can it be that hard?
[09:09:04] Tuju: Anduin – you obviously didn't read what I wrote.
[09:09:25] Tuju: I can understand that others complined in the mailing list as you told.
[09:10:34] Tuju: But hey – your version number is below 0.20 so you're right – this is not meant for endusers nor hackers like me who has worked with linux 12 years (for living). I'll come back when it's 1.0.
[09:12:11] otwin: Tuju: why don't you just use svn and checkout the same revision that your frontend is based on?
[09:12:19] Anduin: Tuju: You are essentially demanding that all release candidates for a particular linux kernel be backwards compatible. In your 12 years I'm sure you've noticed that simply isn't the case.
[09:13:19] Anduin: Tuju: propose a system that doesn't involve a new release when a somewhat trivial fix goes into -fixes (yes even a protocol bump can be trivial, and in fact usually is)

[15:22:13] jduggan: anyway, i have a question, firstly, how or where do i specify the command to process DVD's (ie which player to use and with what option arguements), secondly how can i startup DVDs when i want, rather than have that media monitor running and them start when i put the dvd in the drive
[15:22:31] jduggan: because that's annoying, i dont always want to watch it as soon as i put the disc in the drive
[15:22:41] SarahEmm: umm, the former is under settings, then mythdvd
[15:22:53] SarahEmm: the latter.. is the media monitor a myth thing? mine doesnt' do that
[15:22:59] jduggan: i dont have settings->mythdvd

[15:27:05] SarahEmm: you must have the plugin then

[17:08:50] Tuju: now if I just could figure out why it doesn't show anything. :)
[17:09:12] kormoc: and thus, if you mount it locally, like /mnt/tv on the server is exported out and on the remote frontend is mounted as /mnt/tv, it will read via nfs or whatever you used to mount it there
[17:09:54] Tuju: how about online tv – if I just watch channels – it's not recorded anywhere, right?

[17:31:04] ciphernemo: kormoc: What's MythTV *SVN*?
[17:31:35] kormoc: ciphernemo, SVN (subversion) is the source code version control system myth uses
[17:31:52] kormoc: ciphernemo, so when they say SVN, they tend to mean trunk, which is the development tree
[17:32:00] ciphernemo: ah, makes sense, thx

I've downloaded it, stored it in my own directory /usr/packages and have extracted it into mythtv-0.20 dir. Inside that dir, I did a #./configure ; qmake mythtv.pro ; make ; sudo make install. It never created much in /usr/share/mythtv at all (no /programs /database, etc.)
[17:47:54] ciphernemo: , but I have stuff in the dir I extracted the tarball. Can someone help walk me thorugh a build and clean-up whatever junk I already have on my linux box from my previous attempts?
[17:48:39] kormoc: ciphernemo, not really, as there's no un-install when building from source by hand

[18:26:44] mezoko: wait, that should be father of a son
[18:27:03] firefly2442: fryfrog, yes, it continues sound after I stop watching live tv
[18:27:46] mezoko: fryfrog: I wrote a script at one point in time for linux thought it wasn't very good, it did't always record the full time, some of the problem was wav only supports 4GB file sizes
[18:28:05] fryfrog: firefly2442: And now, I bet you are using a bttv type card (ie, not mpeg2) and you run audio into the "line in" on your sound card?
[18:28:10] firefly2442: fryfrog, it's grabbing the sound from the tvtuner and sending it to the motherboard audio via a cable
[18:28:16] kormoc: I didn't think wav had a file size limit, as it's just raw data
[18:28:25] firefly2442: fryfrog, no bttv card but yess, line in :)
[18:28:26] fryfrog: firefly2442: which means you should simply pop into alsamixer or alsamixergui and turn that volume source up, then mute it
[18:28:26] kormoc: you sure the 4gb isn't a filesystem limit rather then a wav limit?
[18:28:47] mezoko: kormoc: no it was a wav limt

[18:43:44] SarahEmm: why is that so bad?

[18:44:50] fryfrog: if i setup the DVRs to record shows, when *myth* wanted to record a show it might get over ridden
[18:45:05] fryfrog: ie, myth starts recording over firewire on channel 841
[18:45:19] fryfrog: then, half way through the HD DVR says "oh, i should record scrubs" and switches to channel 803

[18:47:14] SarahEmm: i'd miss mythweb
[18:47:24] fryfrog: 1) My mythbackend has 1.2TB of space, the comcast has like 80G

[18:47:55] BULLE: fryfrog: or, i guess you can, but not legaly, withouth breaking it open

[19:03:02] jduggan: because once i started mythfrontend i could quit the application but i would still hear the real-time audio
[19:03:18] kormoc: that doesn't sound right
[19:03:23] jduggan: but now i start mythfrontend and it has no audio at all =]
[19:03:28] kormoc: you should just need to run the commands the docs say and that's it
[19:03:42] jduggan: kormoc: indeed, that's what i've tried
[19:03:50] firefly2442: me too
[19:03:51] kormoc: and they assume you have it plugged into your line-in, if you have it in your mic or other source, it won't work right

[19:04:24] firefly2442: green output to blue input?

[19:04:44] kormoc: firefly2442, colors don't mean much, it's better to check the symbols

[19:06:06] kormoc: tvtime just unmutes the playback of the line-in
[19:06:11] kormoc: which myth can't do

[19:07:30] kormoc: in theory, yes
[19:07:36] ** kormoc nods **
[19:07:53] jduggan: ok
[19:07:56] jduggan: well the line-in is muted now

[19:09:47] kormoc: and one for recording

[19:10:03] kormoc: but the recording to be unmuted and set to line-in
