[01:19:42] Glasswalkr: Hello, just a quick question. Does myth have any known issues with harddrives? I am using knoppmyth (nobody seems alive in their channel), and I started with an old dual processor P3 system with an older 80G hdd, within 3 weeks, the hdd died. Figured it was a bad hdd, but just in case there was compatibility issues I bought a pci ide controller and a brand new 250g ide drive.
[01:20:16] Glasswalkr: Within 3 weeks it died again, I was kinda surprised at this, so I bought a brand new system altogether, and now 3 weeks later, hard drive died AGAIN...
[01:21:14] jams: bad luck
[01:21:21] Glasswalkr: each time the myth box starts getting slightly skippy video (small skips every few minutes) about 3–5 days before dying, then suddenly the backend dies... When I reboot fsck starts seeing errors, then in the middle of repair tons of io request errors and dma errors.
[01:21:38] Glasswalkr: same symptoms each time
[01:21:54] dscoular: Glasswalkr, you could use S.M.A.R.T to check the health of your disks.
[01:22:28] dscoular: Glasswalkr, SMART monitoring would allow you to watch the error rates.
[01:22:42] Glasswalkr: I know, the bios on this system (and the last) didn't have a built in smart tool. Is there software for linux that will do it? I don't want to install windows on this box just to try and diagnose it.
[01:23:09] Glasswalkr: right now fsck is trying to repair it, and it seems to be plugging through it (been running for like an hour now) but getting alot of those io errors
[01:23:13] jams: Glasswalkr- to answer your question there are no know isues with harddrives. some say using resierfs is bad.
[01:23:14] GreyFoxx: smartctl
[01:23:30] dscoular: Glasswalkr, SMART technology is builtin to most modern disks... Linux can read it.
[01:23:40] jams: howdy GreyFoxx
[01:24:08] Glasswalkr: ok, I will check the health of the disk. Yeah I don't think it is resierfs, it is ext3 I think (whatever knoppmyth uses by default)
[01:24:42] dscoular: Glasswalkr, there's even a floppy based distro specifically for it: http://smartlinux.sourceforge.net/ but most distros support smart monitoring these days.
[01:25:06] dscoular: I've had my same myth system for 2 years with the same 2 x 250GB disks.
[01:25:41] dscoular: Both disks are way over the thresholds set by the manufacturers under SMART so I'm way overdue a failure... oh well ;)
[01:26:05] Glasswalkr: just really frustrating. Trying to convince my wife to use the myth box as our new tv solution, and she loved it, but she is the type that as soon as something goes wrong with technology, she has no trust in it and "would rather use the trusted brandname solution" but it will save us money on cable... so trying to get the bloody thing stable.
[01:26:32] dscoular: Glasswalkr, I guess you could build a software raid
[01:26:43] Glasswalkr: I have NEVER seen that many hard drive failures in a row in a specific household and I have worked with computers for most of my life...
[01:27:48] Glasswalkr: dscoular: yeah, can't afford the spare harddrives for raid. nowadays with the difference in prices for drives, it is much cheaper to buy one larger disk than many smaller ones (that is until you breach the 400G mark)

[01:51:03] dscoular: I'd google for smartctl
[01:52:25] Glasswalkr: ok, well all the thresholds are reporting as 000 except for like 10 of the variables. the ones that show 000 show values at 255, but the 10 that showed real thresholds the numbers were well below the thresholds...
[01:52:37] Glasswalkr: The lifetime of the drive even confirms it is a BRAND new drive (20 days total runtime)
[01:54:05] dscoular: ok, I'd regularily check this to see if somehow the controller is frying your disks
[01:54:37] Glasswalkr: I just remembered that I had a bootable copy of spinrite 6, so I booted it, and it's smart screen shows 0 for all variables except relocated sectors, which it shows 303
[01:54:53] Glasswalkr: dscoular: but this is in an entirely different motherboard
[01:55:03] ** dscoular shrugs **
[01:55:21] Glasswalkr: first time it failed in the older p3 board's onboard controller, so I bought a pci controller, then it failed again, now it is in a brand new motherboard's onboard controller
[01:55:29] Glasswalkr: and each time with an entirely different harddrive
[01:55:47] dscoular: Glasswalkr, what make of hdd ?
[01:55:51] Glasswalkr: maxtor

[02:16:41] dscoular: asd26, you only need one remote with matched receiver and driver to send input to the system.
[02:16:49] cesman: if a remote came with a card, the remote must be plugged into that card
[02:16:52] dscoular: asd26, once you can send input you can control all cards.

[02:27:53] mgpaulus: Varanger, I might be able to help with technical difficulties. But not with opinions. I use an air2pc card, not the pcHDTV 3000

[02:43:57] xris: anyone know about lircrc files and whether or not you can send sequences?
[02:50:38] xris: my remote really needs pgup/down keys.
[03:00:17] dscoular: xris, doesn't FF, REW act as pgup/down for certain screens.
[03:02:18] xris: schultmc: those are left and right arrow keys, so probably not
[03:03:01] xris: schultmc: sorry, that was for dscoular
[03:04:35] dscoular: xris, you should be able map any key to any function. If you don't have enough keys consider using "modes": http://www.lirc.org/html/configure.html#lircrc_format
[03:05:35] dscoular: oops, I think I mean something other than "mode"... let me do a quick RTFM
[03:05:45] xris: mode might do it.
[03:07:20] dscoular: xris, ah... yes "mode" was what I originally thought it was.
[03:07:38] dscoular: xris, just got a bit confused skimming
[03:07:50] xris: I bet. lirc is messy at times
[03:09:12] xris: need lirc to be aware of what mode mythtv is in...
[03:09:54] dscoular: xris, some people prefer inputlirc if they have an evdev based remote driver.

[04:53:33] cesman: perhaps you'd be some kind to send me one once this is working...
[04:54:40] xris: cesman: plenty of sample lircrc files in contrib.. and keys.txt will tell you what keys do what in myth (for mapping)
[04:55:07] asd27: that kinda of worked
[04:55:14] asd27: but still needs lircrc
[04:55:30] xris: asd27: lircrc is for configuring mythtv-specific stuff.. you said you wanted to make sure the remote worked.
[04:56:07] cesman: xris: thanks
[04:56:13] cesman: I'll have to take a look
[04:56:22] asd27: lol the remote works

[04:57:38] asd27: cesman so that lircd config i downloaded is worthless?
[04:57:43] xris: use the example file for the format, and keys.txt for the keys you want.
[04:57:48] cesman: I wouldn't say that
[04:57:59] xris: the "button" stuff should match up with the button names for your remote from /etc/lircd.conf
[04:58:00] cesman: odds are, it is the same I already included

[08:48:45] dscoular: asd27, what country ?
[08:48:52] asd27: i was about to buy a twinhan
[08:48:53] dscoular: do you mean guide or OSD ?
[08:49:02] asd27: i seen this one and it was cheap by 2 dollars..lol
[08:49:06] Dibblah: Yes, they're nice and cheap.
[08:49:10] asd27: dscoular guide
[08:49:19] dscoular: Ah... what country, Oz ?
[08:49:23] asd27: $83 dollars for this one
[08:49:25] Dibblah: They suck boulders through very, very small straws, though.
[08:49:35] ** dscoular is sorry he cannot remember **
[08:49:38] asd27: australia here
[08:50:05] asd27: but i think the twin han has usb remote
[08:50:09] dscoular: Ah... then you downloaded the http://immir.com/tv_grab_au
[08:50:10] Juski: the problem with recommending makes/models of cards is that the manufacturer's insist on changing them all the time
[08:50:17] dscoular: Xactly
[08:50:38] dscoular: asd27, it works very, very well
[08:51:11] johnp_: stuarta, what debug would you like to diagnose a scanning problem :( ?
[08:51:12] dscoular: Juski, yeah you really need to see the output of lspci before you buy :)
[08:51:29] Juski: stuarta: can the cx88 card you've have problems with the HD streams grab a whole mux at the same time?
[08:51:35] stuarta: johnp_: firstly what's the problem
[08:51:52] asd27: dscoular where do i put that file?
[08:51:57] stuarta: Juski: no idea, haven't tried it.
[08:52:18] dscoular: asd27, backup the one in /usr/bin, throw it in there and make it executable
[08:52:30] dscoular: asd27, via chmod a+x /usr/bin/tv_grab_au
[08:52:40] dscoular: re-run mythtv-setup
[08:52:45] johnp_: it doesn't work :) but mainly all the frequencies are rubbish, I multiple sets of frequencies some look about right, but don't have the correct channels associated with them, others are wildly out.
[08:52:58] dscoular: asd27, associate the new xmltvid's with your scanned channels
[08:53:08] dscoular: asd27, oh! and have fun!
[08:53:19] asd27: i'm seriously having crackling issues..must be the antenna
[08:53:21] stuarta: johnp: I need dtv_mulitplex table & the output of dvbsnoop -n 1 -nph 0x10
[08:53:22] Juski: every card might end up being okay – the HD trial might not even be what the final scheme is – still early days yet
[08:53:27] johnp_: (of course my channels are associated with the clamped frequencies.)
[08:53:30] dscoular: asd27, sounds like
[08:53:40] johnp_: k no problem I'll do it tonight.
[08:54:20] stuarta: johnp_: may as well keep the output of mythtv-setup --verbose siparser, record, channel as well
[08:54:37] johnp_: stuarta, right.

[12:15:30] Zider: altho tv's doesn't have the same protection that monitors have
[12:15:42] LLyric: In particular, giving it a lot quicker vertical scan rate than it's capable
[12:16:02] VlivE: stuarta> VlivE: alternatively you can use the frequencies listed in channels.conf and do a tuned scan

[12:20:57] daxxar: :-|
[12:21:19] daxxar: So, basically, I need to config my dhcp to point it to the tftp-server, then set up a tftp-server for it to download the bootloader from?
[12:21:32] Juski: that is only a _tiny_ complaint though – it totally rocks (how fscking cheesy does that sound?)
[12:21:44] Juski: daxxar: that's about it yeah
[12:22:10] Juski: that bit I found very easy. it's the minimyth.conf file I found confusing

[13:06:53] daxxar: dscoular, there are other tftps. Running it standalone instead of inetd works.
[13:07:06] daxxar: Perhaps even setting the tftp to run as root from inetd would work
[13:07:12] daxxar: So that the tftp changes permissions itself.
[13:07:13] dscoular: dvb-t should give you mpeg-2 (in most cases)... which vlc should have no problem playing.

[16:00:28] Juski: VlivE: what? your problem is likely your xorg.conf file
[16:00:45] Juski: Vme: you can get PCI & AGP versions of that card. AGP is cheapest

[16:03:36] Juski: Vme: or any other DVB-S card that has linux drivers
[16:04:13] Vme: ok, but the two card scenerio is a good solution?

[16:05:17] Vme: really?
[16:05:28] Juski: unless you want to run the backend headless and have a seperate frontend

[21:31:24] Zider: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mobile/displ . . . imatrix.html – neato little system
[21:31:38] WillCooke: Gonna try and turn off mheg and try radio again. I'm really impressed by how much the svn has come along in the last 6 months
[21:31:46] WillCooke: LOADS of new features
[21:32:16] Juski: WillCooke: I was muchly impressed too. less so by all the segfaulting
[21:34:07] Juski: sleeptimer for the lazy folks, too ;)
[21:34:45] WillCooke: Mines been very stable actually – but then this is a virgin dapper box and a virgin myth install. I'm cross with umbungo – you can't remove, for example, gimp – without removing "umbungo-desktop" packages, which b0rks the universe.
[21:35:05] Juski: WillCooke: eew
[21:35:21] WillCooke: ok – so turning mheg off doesn't help – I expect it'll be fixed soon.
[21:35:24] gardengnome: ubuntu-desktop and the like are just metapackages imho, how's that gonna break universe?
[21:36:31] WillCooke: gardengnome: 'cos when I apt-get upgrade everyday it doesnt upgrade the packages within desktop – e.g. kernel, and then odd things start to happen
[21:36:46] gardengnome: WillCooke: wow. weird. didn't know that.
[21:37:20] WillCooke: gardengnome: IME it just isn't worth removing the desktop package and then trying to fix the stuff that breaks.
[21:37:44] Juski: omg that was easy
[21:37:46] WillCooke: What I should have done is install the server version and then install the extras on top – that would have saved me a lot of downloading
[21:37:49] Juski: like _too_ easy
[21:38:21] WillCooke: Juski: what was?
[21:38:30] gardengnome: WillCooke: removing the desktop packages does not deinstall any packages. so, when you do an apt-get upgrade, why would it *not* upgrade certain packages?
[21:38:40] Zider: hm.. would "Real-time MPEG 1/2/4 video recording" indicate hardware encoding? the specs are a bit vague.. :P
[21:38:48] Juski: I just plugged in the card reader & it appeared on the desktop
[21:39:00] Juski: Zider: marketing bollocks. it's a software encoder

[21:40:09] Zider: :P
[21:40:42] mchou: it's a SW encoder for sure
[21:41:11] Zider: too bad.. seems to be a pretty nifty little card otherwise..
[21:41:12] mchou: "Linux driver is available for OEM request."
[21:41:17] mchou: lol

[22:45:16] GreyFoxx: Then do a scan to pull them into the database
