[01:38:00] kormoc: one would guess that UbuntuNewbee would be using Ubuntu :)
[01:38:00] kormoc: I should talk to Cardoe about a backendonly useflag...
[01:38:00] kormoc: have no X depends
[01:38:00] Krazylegz: kormoc: That's not kosher.
[01:39:00] kormoc: Krazylegz, what's not?
[01:39:00] Krazylegz: backendonly
[01:39:00] kormoc: ahh, yeah, it's not, but it would be really handy
[01:39:00] Chutt: the frontendonly/backendonly compile flags are for _porting purposes only_
[01:39:00] ** kormoc nods. **
[01:40:00] Chutt: compile time requirements are identical, the size of the binaries is almost the same.
[01:40:00] Chutt: there's basically no benefit to doing either on a linux box.
[01:40:00] kormoc: Chutt, ooh? there's no way to get around the X requirements for the backend?
[01:40:00] Chutt: of course not.
[01:40:00] kormoc: ooh right, it uses the QT mysql lib...
[01:40:00] Chutt: of course, then, it doesn't actually connect to the x server.
[01:41:00] Chutt: so it's just a matter of having the x libs installed on a machine, which are tiny.
[01:43:00] kormoc: yeah, that's an issue with gentoo's method. I'd need to install the full X org install to get the X libs.
[01:43:00] kormoc: which is something I had hoped to avoid, but ahh well, tis how it is

[02:15:00] tanq: what is the purpose of irexec
[02:15:00] Servo888: tanq, to run applications
[02:15:00] tanq: ok so i'm trying to figure out why i can't get my remote to work in myth
[02:16:00] Servo888: Is irexec running?
[02:16:00] tanq: it is now
[02:16:00] Servo888: irexec and mythtv need to run at the same time.

[02:30:00] Servo888: ok... For that to work I think mythtv needs to have lirc support built in. But I'm not 100% sure because the configuration script doesn't allow the '--enable-lirc' option. One option you have that I know works is instead of using prog = mythtv, is to use prog = irxevent.
[02:30:00] tanq: i got that lircrc from http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/lircrc-haupgrey-g3.txt

[05:24:00] Cardoe: kormoc: MythTV installs on a raw box with like 12 X deps

[05:24:00] kormoc: coolness.
[05:25:00] Cardoe: granular deps.
[05:25:00] kormoc: Well, in the (nearish) future, My myth backend will be on a headless box, so it would have been nice to not need any X, but hey, I'll take whatever I can get :)

[05:29:00] Cardoe: Krazylegz: heh. alrighty
[05:29:00] Cardoe: kormoc: I'm talking to you from modular X
[05:29:00] Cardoe: both my Myth boxes use it
[05:30:00] Cardoe: I'd say it's not broken
[05:30:00] Cardoe: only issue... no binary drivers yet

[05:49:00] fallenangel: poop: i fixed it, i had to dump the who database and download all new info
[05:49:00] oblib: Cardoe, it runs a script that requires root access — how can I sudo without a keyboard?
[05:54:00] Krazylegz: You can just change permissions on the shutdown script.
[05:54:00] Krazylegz: chmod 777 /sbin/shutdown
[05:54:00] Krazylegz: Er, might want chmod 111 /sbin/shutdown, or something like that.
[05:55:00] laga: chmod a+x? ;) but i'm not sure if that would work, since you would still be a normal user. you can use sudo without having the need for a password, though.
[05:55:00] Cardoe: or have your shutdown command be
[05:55:00] Cardoe: sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh
[05:56:00] tanq: hah
[05:56:00] Cardoe: and edit your /etc/sudoers

[05:56:00] tanq: so i rolled back to a different one
[05:56:00] Krazylegz: Whew. Bedtime.
[05:56:00] oblib: But I would have to enter the password for sudo to work
[05:56:00] tanq: it works fine nwo

[06:24:00] ** kormoc peers at ticket **
[06:24:00] knowledgejunkie: kormoc: trac seems to be down – database is locked
[06:25:00] kormoc: yeah, just noticed.
[06:25:00] kormoc: knewt, so what exactly are you doing to get it to fail?
[06:25:00] kormoc: erm, that was to knowledgejunkie
[06:27:00] knowledgejunkie: Simplest way – open mythweb, select 'Searches', select 'Movies' -> I get a big list of all movies in my programs table. If I then try to sort the results i.e. by channum, I get the error
[06:27:00] knowledgejunkie: Per the mythweb readme, this points to Apache and mythweb being setup incorrectly
[06:27:00] knowledgejunkie: I get the same behaviour if I do a program search and then try to sort the results.
[06:28:00] kormoc: yeah... it works for me perfectly fine
[06:28:00] knowledgejunkie: However, sorting the contents of the Recording Schedules, Schedules Recordings and Recorded Programs works fine
[06:29:00] kormoc: basically I think the issue will be something with your sessions
[06:29:00] kormoc: as it stores the current search into the session
[06:29:00] knowledgejunkie: I've checked the perms on the sessions dir and files are created each time I use mythweb
[06:31:00] knowledgejunkie: kormoc: In your apache config, are you using canonical names?

[06:32:00] kormoc: what's the option for that?
[06:33:00] knowledgejunkie: kormoc: UseCanonicalName
[06:33:00] kormoc: I don't even have that in my httpd config, so I'd say that's a no

[07:59:00] tanq: should be better than vga too

[08:00:00] kcid_: i used that
[08:02:00] danieldk: well hdmi is the same as dvi

[08:03:00] kcid_: which you can't find any hardware encoders for
[08:03:00] danieldk: wich is equally as good or better than 15 pin d-sub (vga connector)
[08:04:00] Pix: YPbPr ?

[08:04:00] Pix: component is the important thing

[08:05:00] kcid_: err component
[08:05:00] tanq: uh... hdmi and dvi have different pinouts
[08:05:00] tanq: which carry different data
[08:05:00] kcid_: yeah you can get a adapter cable
[08:05:00] kcid_: negative
[08:05:00] kcid_: same data
[08:06:00] tanq: hdmi carries audio
[08:06:00] Pix: hdmi is (more or less) dvi-d + data channels for drm
[08:06:00] tanq: dvi doesnt
[08:06:00] kcid_: so you don't punch down the audio side to the dvi connector
[08:06:00] kcid_: and you instead insert them into the hardware encoder i was bitching about earlier

[10:11:00] juski: rage_: when you say they were both working before you rebooted.. were they working before the reboot before that one? I mean have you just had the one reboot since you got them working?
[10:12:00] juski: danieldk: I think GAR minimyth would be a good starting point though, since everything you need is there

[10:22:00] juski: and what about this 'interference'? where the heck is that coming from? PSU? fan going on the fritz? I think that could well be the root of the problem and the single DVB tuner not working is incidental
[10:23:00] danieldk: actually i had i all up and running using debian but i couldn't get the unichrome driver to work – then i discovered minimyth.. :-)
[10:23:00] juski: rage_: you should also try swapping the cards over too – if the fault follows the card then the card is screwed. if the fault stays with the PCI slot, it's not the card :)
[10:24:00] juski: danieldk: unichrome can be a proper PITA.. but there are loads of howto guides now – and binary drivers you can use
[10:27:00] rage_: no idea what's causing the interference

[10:27:00] rage_: er
[10:27:00] rage_: figure it out
[10:27:00] rage_: and I don't know why a card would go bad after a reboot
[10:27:00] rage_: or a PCI slot
[10:27:00] rage_: :/
[10:27:00] juski: rage_: and that interference thing.. if it came on all of a sudden I think it's likely to be either an overheating issue or PSU issue. If it turns out that other DVB card is broken, then maybe the PSU has broken it
[10:27:00] juski: rage_: swap the DVB tuner cards over.. where one card is now, plug the other in, and vice-versa
[10:29:00] juski: then boot up & see which card works... if the previously non-working card is okay this time, then you probably have a duff motherboard
[10:30:00] juski: btw these things can happen. I once had to repair a PC where the motherboard CPU voltage regulator went faulty. Kill the motherboard & most of the PCI cards

[10:34:00] juski: rage_: you're avoiding the issue IMHO. both cards are identical, so use the _same driver_. the driver is working for one but not the other... hmmmm
[10:34:00] juski: swap the cards over & see which one works
[10:35:00] rage_: I'm not avoiding the issue... I"m trying to understand
[10:35:00] rage_: I don't see why a reboot of the pc... a warm reboot at that... I don't see why it would cause a card to not work
[10:35:00] rage_: just doesn't seem logical to me
[10:35:00] juski: rage_: electronics can be weird like that
[10:36:00] juski: one minute they work – and hey the next there's smoke coming out of the box.. wooo
[10:37:00] danieldk: yes "once you release the mysterious blue smoke electronics doesn't work anymore"
[10:37:00] juski: rage_: have you tried a power-down reboot? it might just be that the PCI card got its knickers in a twist
[10:38:00] rage_: yeah, I shut down, unplugged, and let sit for ~5 min
[10:38:00] rage_: came back and the same thing
[10:38:00] juski: right
[10:38:00] juski: then some of your hardware is broken. no doubt about that
[10:38:00] rage_: you're not saying nice things :(

[10:42:00] rage_: I'm just giving you hell
[10:42:00] juski: I'd definitely not use the same PSU again if I were you. And if you have a spare motherboard to try, do that too
[10:42:00] rage_: gotta keep the mood light before I put my fist through my monitor and discover I need a new one of them too
[10:42:00] juski: and if the PSU does turn out to be bad, budget for a whole new system :(
[10:43:00] rage_: a whole new system if the PSU goes bad?
[10:43:00] rage_: ... that seems a bit ......... drastic.
[10:43:00] juski: depends... sometimes the case
[10:43:00] juski: if one of the voltage rails goes.. er.. off the rails then yes
[10:43:00] rage_: and that PC is a good 5 feet from my TV
[10:44:00] rage_: I don't really think it's causing the interference
[10:44:00] juski: rage_: is this interefence just on the TV output of your PC, or is the everything on the TV getting it?

[10:45:00] juski: rage_: pastebin, or you'll get kicked for flooding
[10:45:00] juski: rage_: you _have_ to find out which bit of hardware is broken. do the simple PCI card shuffle first
[10:46:00] rage_: I'm also wondering if its an IRQ problem
[10:46:00] juski: how could it be an IRQ problem? nothing has changed apart from you rebooting
[10:47:00] rage_: *shrug* I've seen strange things happen before...
[10:47:00] juski: look, just swap the damn cards over & see which one works. then try different PCI slots if you _must_
[10:47:00] rage_: hell, I know a guy who had this card in his pc... and if he shuts down his pc and doesn't wait a good minute, the card doesn't work correctly
[10:47:00] rage_: he then has to shut down, unplug, wait a minute, and start back up to get it to work again.
[10:48:00] rage_: I would have done that by now, but I'm busy on this pc right now...
[10:48:00] rage_: so in the mean time I'm trying to brainstorm what else it could be... ok? :/
[10:49:00] juski: there's basically nothing else it can realistically be
[10:49:00] juski: both cards are IDENTICAL, so if both cards are in good working order, when the driver loads they should _both_ work
[10:50:00] rage_: yeah, well like the situation I mentioned above... you'd think it to be hardware failure unless you unplugged the pc and waited it out like we discovered we needed to.
[10:52:00] juski: that sounds more like a heat-related problem...
[10:53:00] rage_: had nothing to do with heat though heh
[10:53:00] rage_: simply how the motherboard powered down basically
[10:53:00] rage_: it didn't power down in a way that the card liked unless you let it sit for a while before powering on again
[10:54:00] ** wole doffs cap in a good morning type way **
[10:55:00] juski: right. this has nothing to do with the twinhan card failure though. it'll turn out that you have a faulty card/motherboard/PSU (maybe all the above) – of that am in no doubt
[10:55:00] rage_: heh
[10:56:00] juski: used to work – now doesn't work... identical card sitting next to it which works – kinda rules out a software issue. my case is rested

[10:58:00] wole: that aren't identical?
[10:59:00] juski: wole: they were working before a reboot
[11:00:00] wole: power surge?
[11:00:00] juski: and who's to say that whatever the card does to initialise itself after a reset is even possible if something broke it.. hence the working before reset.. then not working
[11:00:00] rage_: they're soft cards
[11:00:00] wole: try swapping them around
[11:00:00] rage_: so I don't think they *do* a lot on their own
[11:01:00] rage_: dvb-bt8xx: A frontend driver was not found for device 109e/0878 subsystem 0000/0000

[11:03:00] juski: look. I've got this unit here. It's a CCTV DVR, right. It has software in a flash memory, right? look it's working, and will still work even if I wipe the flash disk.. but when I reboot it.. oh shit
[11:03:00] rage_: I told you juski
[11:03:00] rage_: I'm _busy_ with this computer right now
[11:03:00] rage_: and I can't reboot
[11:04:00] juski: what I'm saying is, it's totally conceivable that rebooting didn't precipitate the failure – it has just highlighted it
[11:04:00] wole: but without the tools to write to the flash, it's as good as burnt out.

[11:23:00] rage-: swapped cards, rebooted... both cards working.
[11:23:00] rage-: apology accepted.

[11:26:00] juski: I'd still be worried about it. reseating cards curing a failure doesn't sound like an ideal situation to be in
[11:26:00] rage-: I don't think the reseat fixed anything
[11:26:00] rage-: I think it was just a quirk to tell you the truth
[11:26:00] juski: unless, as you say, the card just got its knickers in a twist & needed to stay powered down.. but that's just stupid
[11:27:00] rage-: well... the guy that I know that had the odd problems with the same model card...
[11:27:00] rage-: we troubleshooted for probably 2–3 hours
[11:27:00] juski: and a damn good excuse not to buy twinhan shite
[11:27:00] rage-: to figure out why it didn't work right... what caused it to not work right.. and how to remedy it
[11:27:00] rage-: also trying it in another pc and having the problem not occur
[11:28:00] danieldk: it needs to get 1,6 gb – oh well atleast it's a fast server aprox 8Mb/s sustained
[11:28:00] juski: what I've started to notice about manufacturers of hardware is that they interpret 'specs' as 'guidelines'
[11:28:00] rage-: in his case, it was the motherboard not powering down in a way the card liked
[11:28:00] rage-: not a bad card
[11:28:00] juski: rage: out of interest what motherboard do you use?
[11:29:00] rage-: this machine has a gigabyte ga-7vaxp
[11:29:00] juski: I used one of them without any problems
[11:29:00] juski: still do use it infact
[11:29:00] rage-: unfortunately, this is my third one
[11:30:00] juski: ouch
[11:30:00] rage-: first one: couple caps blew, they sent me a refurb... that had a buttload of weird problems,,, started to wonder if I had bad hardware elsewhere... tested for days, decided it to be the mobo... sent it back, got another refurb... that one worked.
[11:31:00] juski: ugh
[11:31:00] rage-: yeah
[11:31:00] rage-: that process took like 3 months.
[11:31:00] rage-: I will _NOT_ buy gigabyte again heh
[11:32:00] juski: actually thinking about it, I can see how different power down states can be brought about. when I do a powerdown I tend not to use the power switch.. I just pull the mains plug
[11:32:00] juski: that makes only 2 states.. on & off :)
[11:32:00] rage-: aye
[11:32:00] juski: rage-: you can get unlucky with any hardware tho
[11:32:00] rage-: some mobos leave power to certain things
[11:32:00] rage-: some dont
[11:33:00] juski: maybe in the case you've just experienced, some PCI control registers were screwy
[11:33:00] rage-: for instance, my USB remote sensor that came with my twinhan... while powered down, that stays lit while plugged in to some pc's I've tried it in... others it doesn't stay lit
[11:33:00] juski: I have a tendency to assume everything _should_ be okay cos everybody follows the specs, right?
[11:34:00] rage-: juski, it's not so much the fact that my board went bad... it was the terrible customer service
[11:34:00] juski: ahh right
[11:34:00] rage-: 3 months down time...
[11:34:00] rage-: I mean a bad mobo, yeah shit happens
[11:34:00] rage-: can't blame the company
[11:34:00] rage-: they send me a refurb.... ok, well swallow hard and try it... refurb goes bad......
[11:34:00] juski: true
[11:34:00] rage-: I'd expect a new board at that point
[11:34:00] rage-: but no, they send another refurb
[11:35:00] rage-: at the time I was working on some things for a client
[11:35:00] rage-: and had to do those things on a much slower pc
[11:35:00] rage-: so that really slowed down my productivity as well
[11:36:00] juski: hardware manufacturers though – it's hard to find em that aren't sharks
[11:36:00] juski: and lying bastards. look at ATI & their 'all in wonder' cards
[11:36:00] juski: anyway.. g2g for a while
[11:36:00] rage-: hrm?

[14:00:00] sphing: laga.. quick question... can you make openwrt actualy slow the connection?
[14:01:00] laga: sphing: what do you have in mind? i use QoS where my ssh sessions get more priority than bittorrent traffic, it works quite well.
[14:01:00] juski: it might make vertical recording look like a tiny step forwards.. very much looking fwd to seeing the first desktop vertical rec. HDDs though
[14:01:00] ** wole cheers and does a little dance **
[14:01:00] laga: and you there's a package that does QoS on the wlan to make sure that "hidden nodes" won't eat up all your bandwidth
[14:01:00] laga: ah, my favourite teacher, wole ;)
[14:01:00] sphing: laga.. i want to use openwrt to simulate a connection, like cable or something so that i can use it on a test platform
[14:02:00] laga: sphing: duh. should be possible, if gnu/linux can do it. maybe you can modify the qos-script to do that, not sure.
[14:03:00] ** wole has just made myth automagically revord tv an output transcoded avi files with mpeg4 video and mp3 sound **
[14:03:00] laga: wole: nice ;). how?
[14:03:00] wole: laga: using mkmovie
[14:04:00] juski: hmm 124896 sectors @at 512 bytes/sector = 64MB so how the hell is this software getting over 80GB?
[14:04:00] wole: laga: used knoppmyth, upgraded transcode, installed ffdshow, made & installed mkmovie then edited mkmovie script to use ffmpeg instead of divx
[14:05:00] wole: then use custom command after recording to launch mkmovie
[14:05:00] laga: wole: sounds good. make sure to submit your changes to the maintainer :)

[14:09:00] fryfrog: http://gallery.menalto.com/node/33428#comment-121847
[14:09:00] wole: laga: no, mkmovie takes the stuff in the \tv folder and makes an avi that it outputs to the \video folder, it then updates the videometadata table with the info from the listings
[14:10:00] fryfrog: why is my nick invisible?
[14:10:00] fryfrog: that was a brief description by the person that made it
[14:10:00] juski: yellow onwhite.. not good over 8bit vnc on a shitty cheap work TFT
[14:10:00] juski: fryfrog: use GIMP
[14:10:00] laga: wole: wow, that's quite sophisticated. but why would you have broken playback while transcoding? is your CPU too slow?
[14:11:00] fryfrog: i am using irssi, i've not really done anything... i dunno why my nick would look diff?
[14:11:00] GreyFoxx: fryfrog: You don't set the nick colour, his client does that
[14:11:00] fryfrog: juski: I don't mind gimp vs. ps, i just am not sure *how* to actually make that file
[14:11:00] juski: fryfrog: make a new layer, and put some white text onto it.. then set the layer transparency so the image below shows through it
[14:11:00] fryfrog: yeah, so why is he talking to me about it?
[14:12:00] GreyFoxx: *shrug* :)
[14:12:00] laga: juski, have you been drinking again? ;)
[14:12:00] juski: not yet laga
[14:12:00] fryfrog: juski: what i'm really after is the png of *just* the text so i can have them auto-watermarked
[14:12:00] laga: juski: well, it's not 4pm yet.
[14:12:00] wole: laga: no, i think that myth launches a 3rd party app to play the avi files, and it doesn't like some of the changes that i have made to the codecs i have installed – at any rate, you try to view one of these transcoded files and the screen goes black for a sec, then dumps you back to the menu.
[14:13:00] wole: works fine from mt windoze boxes over samba share tho
[14:13:00] juski: fryfrog: so just make a layer, make it semi-transparent (aka translucent) by tweaking its erm opacity, then save it as a PNG with transparency information
[14:13:00] GreyFoxx: wole: by default myth uses mplayer for mythvideo but you can use the internal player if you want to try that
[14:13:00] laga: wole: mythtv does not launch any third party app, at least nopt in the "watch recordings" screen. and mythtv also ships with its own libraries so that changes you made to your system shouldn't affect it much
[14:13:00] juski: the strange thing about fryfrog's nick is that nobody else's shows up in yello
[14:14:00] GreyFoxx: laga: He's referring to MythVideo I believe
[14:14:00] juski: every other nick comes up in different colours
[14:14:00] laga: GreyFoxx: oh, ok. thought he was talking about core functionality
[14:14:00] wole: yeah, mythvideo
[14:14:00] GreyFoxx: wole you can use the internal player or an external player
[14:14:00] ** GreyFoxx wonders if the internal player should be made the default for new installs **
[14:15:00] wole: have to fix mplayer now – not that it really matters, i only want to use this box as a backend anyway – hasn;t even got a sound card...
[14:15:00] laga: GreyFoxx: i don't thinks o, it didn't work with many of my files
[14:15:00] GreyFoxx: It works on pretty much all of mine (almost all of which are mpg, or divx/xvid avi's
[14:15:00] juski: I'll stick with my xine fankyoo
[14:16:00] GreyFoxx: making it the default doesn't stop someone from using whatever they like :)
[14:16:00] GreyFoxx: and of course that wouldn't override any existing setting
[14:17:00] GreyFoxx: Just new installs would have "Internal" by default rather than mplayer
[14:18:00] wole: Now all i have to do is patch mythweb. The final system should record the past two weeks of teachers tv on a rolling cycle (easy) and allow ppl to log on to mythweb and stream the shows to evaluate tehm (easy) then click the transcode button to move them to mythvideo & the samba share so kids can watch them (hard)

[15:14:00] jd86: and you want to get X and mythfrontend to start on boot?
[15:15:00] tanq: and lircd, irexec, and irxevent
[15:15:00] jd86: hmm
[15:15:00] tanq: X is no problem
[15:15:00] jd86: well lircd should have a rc script /etc/init.d/lircd << thats lircd so add it to boot rc-update add lircd default
[15:15:00] tanq: lircd doesnt have the script
[15:15:00] tanq: i installed from source
[15:16:00] tanq: but i wrote one last night and it pukes
[15:16:00] jd86: so did i, i edited the gentoo one, want mine?
[15:16:00] jd86: wheres lircd located at?
[15:16:00] jd86: /usr/local/sbin/lircd ?
[15:16:00] tanq: /usr/local/
[15:16:00] tanq: yeah
[15:17:00] tanq: its in the same as yours.
[15:17:00] jd86: ok
[15:17:00] jd86: http://jimhome.psunit.com/lircd
[15:17:00] tanq: so i exec /usr/local/sbin/lircd /etc/conf.d/mythbackend/lircd.conf
[15:17:00] jd86: and you probably should have a /etc/conf.d/lircd that says somthing like:
[15:18:00] jd86: http://jimhome.psunit.com/lircd_put_inconf.d
[15:18:00] tanq: where is LIRCD_OPTS set
[15:18:00] jd86: /etc/conf.d/lircd

[15:31:00] juski: tanq: was mythtv compiled without native lirc support?
[15:31:00] tanq: probably
[15:31:00] juski: tanq: that'll be why then ;)
[15:31:00] tanq: i can't even remember how i installed it
[15:31:00] Krazylegz: tanq: Do you ever sleep?
[15:31:00] tanq: i try
[15:32:00] dev-: lol
[15:33:00] tanq: ok so here is the problem i was having juski
[15:33:00] tanq: the only thing i could install via ebuild was mythtv
[15:33:00] tanq: i guess if i stub out lirc i can make this work
[15:33:00] juski: ahh.. you need lirc in your USE list
[15:33:00] tanq: yeah i know..
[15:33:00] tanq: but basically i compiled lirc and ivtv myself
[15:34:00] juski: coz if it's not there when you emerge mythtv it won't build it into mythtv
[15:34:00] tanq: i guess i need to do an inject so i can USE lirc
[15:34:00] juski: or just edit /etc/make.conf and re-emerge mythtv
[15:34:00] tanq: what would make.conf have to do with lirc failing emerge
[15:35:00] jd86: tanq: just add lirc to provided
[15:35:00] juski: put lirc in USE, coz otherwie mythtv won't be built with lirc support
[15:35:00] juski: it makes no difference whether you build lirc yourself or not if mythtv isn't built with lirc enabled
[15:36:00] tanq: provided?
[15:36:00] tanq: they've changed some stuff around. .you can't even inject anymore
[15:37:00] juski: ah.. wait a sec.. I had a problem where lirc wouldn't work, and emerging mythtv made it try to emerge lirc too
[15:37:00] tanq: yeah when you USE lirc it tries to emerge lirc
[15:37:00] tanq: and masking it wont work..
[15:37:00] juski: edit the ebuild.. muhahahaha
[15:37:00] tanq: you used to be able stub them out
[15:37:00] juski: I've editied ebuilds to make it work before
[15:38:00] juski: slowly started dawning on me how crap gentoo is about stuff like that
[15:39:00] dev-: its not really gentoo.. its usually a problem betwee nthe keyboard and chair
[15:39:00] juski: it's all well & good if the stuff builds okay, but when it doesn't...
[15:39:00] dev-: tanq: you shouldnt really install things from src on gentoo, if you use portage... should either always use portage, or never use it..
[15:40:00] dev-: juski: most of the time its a very common problem, or you can edit ebuilds ;p
[15:41:00] tanq: dev-: actually it doesn't matter i've been using gentoo for a long time.
[15:41:00] dev-: ok there useing a hack to get lirc support in myth
[15:41:00] dev-: you must be the man
[15:41:00] dev-: :)
[15:42:00] juski: the point is, ebuilds shouldn't have to be edited
[15:42:00] tanq: the only difference is using an ebuild vs entering the commands yourself.
[15:42:00] dev-: oh and what else, cant even get shit to work on boot
[15:42:00] tanq: it's all compiled from source
[15:42:00] dev-: juski: only times ive edited ebuilds were to make new ones for new versions ;p but thats copying really :)
[15:43:00] juski: I never managed to get lirc to work properly from portage so I built it myself
[15:43:00] tanq: yeah i had to get lirc from cvs
[15:43:00] tanq: i think i was able to emerge it but it didnt work
[15:43:00] dev-: lol
[15:43:00] juski: last thing I had to do with an ebuild was fix it so a broken dependency (hard masked I might add) wasn't needed for xmltv (and it wasn't actually needed anyway)
[15:43:00] tanq: and the stable dist on the website wouldnt work fro me either
[15:45:00] ** tanq yawns **

[17:21:00] fryfrog: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128292
[17:21:00] |Slurpee|: jsut for standard definition
[17:21:00] praet: then you need to output from your comp to the tv
[17:21:00] fryfrog: |Slurpee|: 1 tuner == 1 recording
[17:21:00] fryfrog: so if you want to only *ever* record 1 show, you only need 1 tuner
[17:21:00] fryfrog: but if you want to record two shows at the same time...
[17:22:00] |Slurpee|: nah
[17:22:00] fryfrog: you need another tuner
[17:22:00] |Slurpee|: im fine with 1 show at a time
[17:22:00] |Slurpee|: so i only need the pvr-150 ?
[17:22:00] fryfrog: ie, if Lost and Superman are on at the same time, it will only pick one to record
[17:22:00] fryfrog: yeah, one 150 is fine
[17:22:00] |Slurpee|: well i can watch lost and record superman ?
[17:22:00] praet: and a video card that can output to your tv
[17:22:00] fryfrog: I had 4x pvr 250s
[17:22:00] praet: well i can watch lost and record superman ? << only if it was previously recorded
[17:22:00] fryfrog: sure, as long as you recorded lost the day before
[17:22:00] fryfrog: or you juse use your tv
[17:23:00] |Slurpee|: yea
[17:23:00] praet: fryfrog wtf.. how many cards are you using now?
[17:23:00] fryfrog: (and if you just watch lost on yoru tv w/o myth at all)
[17:23:00] fryfrog: i only have one pvr250 running
[17:23:00] |Slurpee|: yea ill watch lost on my tv and have mythtv record superman ?
[17:23:00] fryfrog: and a hdtv5000 that isn't working
[17:23:00] |Slurpee|: what is a pvr-250 ??
[17:23:00] fryfrog: |Slurpee|: correct
[17:23:00] |Slurpee|: i think i just need a pvr-150 to start out
[17:23:00] fryfrog: its the *older* version of the 150
[17:24:00] |Slurpee|: then i need another video card
[17:24:00] fryfrog: 150 == newer, better 250
[17:24:00] praet: right.. it came first
[17:24:00] |Slurpee|: do i put the other video card in the agp ?
[17:24:00] fryfrog: |Slurpee|: generally :)
[17:24:00] praet: and the 150 includes an ir transmitter, a large remote
[17:24:00] praet: and is cheaper :)
[17:24:00] |Slurpee|: k
[17:24:00] |Slurpee|: remeber
[17:24:00] |Slurpee|: im going to order all this stuff right now
[17:25:00] |Slurpee|: so please bare with me if i have too many questions
[17:25:00] praet: hehe ask twice, buy once :)
[17:25:00] |Slurpee|: so i need the pvr-150 and 1 more video card
[17:25:00] |Slurpee|: which video card do u recommend
[17:25:00] fryfrog: GF4 + is prolly best choice
[17:25:00] fryfrog: you could probably get one real cheap from ebay
[17:25:00] |Slurpee|: i was told a nvida fx5200 ...
[17:25:00] fryfrog: mine uses a GF4 Ti 4200
[17:25:00] rsdvd (n=rsdvd@rsdvd.plus.com) Quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host))
[17:26:00] |Slurpee|: whats the averaqge price
[17:26:00] fryfrog: sure, that is higher than a GF4
[17:26:00] praet: fx5200 agp comes with some good outputs
[17:26:00] praet: $50
[17:26:00] |Slurpee|: any model numbers or prices you can give me ?
[17:26:00] |Slurpee|: i think i had found a fx5200 for 37 with free shipping
[17:28:00] praet: well like fryfrog said, if you plan on hd soon get one with dvi out
[17:28:00] |Slurpee|: does 5200 have that ?
[17:28:00] praet: depends on the model
[17:28:00] |Slurpee|: can u find a model that does ?
[17:28:00] praet: asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121186
[17:29:00] praet: that has composit out
[17:29:00] praet: eVga: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130173
[17:29:00] praet: that one has s-video out
[17:29:00] |Slurpee|: which is better
[17:30:00] praet: both have dvi and vga
[17:30:00] praet: so if you have svideo into yuor tv get the svideo one
[17:30:00] |Slurpee|: i have svideo into my analog tv
[17:31:00] |Slurpee|: then when i get the hdtv i can just use the dvi ??
[17:31:00] fryfrog: yup, thats what i did
[17:31:00] |Slurpee|: sweet
[17:31:00] |Slurpee|: so i got that card
[17:31:00] fryfrog: though, be sure you order your dvi -> hdmi cable ONLINE
[17:31:00] |Slurpee|: yea i worked at the store...
[17:31:00] fryfrog: in bestbuy, the cable is like $80
[17:31:00] |Slurpee|: i kno about the cables hahah
[17:31:00] fryfrog: online is like $10
[17:31:00] praet: wow thanks for the heads up
[17:31:00] fryfrog: yeah, moster
[17:31:00] fryfrog: monster
[17:31:00] |Slurpee|: mosnter and straight wire
[17:31:00] fryfrog: they suck
[17:31:00] |Slurpee|: well either way
[17:31:00] fryfrog: they are full of shit
[17:32:00] |Slurpee|: new egg have pvr-150 ?
[17:32:00] praet: yeah i just bought one
[17:32:00] |Slurpee|: there is multiple pvr-150s ...
[17:32:00] praet: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815116625 89.
[17:33:00] praet: oh right.. the mce versions allow rca audio in, and do not include a remote (they are for windows media center)
[17:33:00] |Slurpee|: i want the remote ;/

[17:42:00] Zirka: Hello.
[17:42:00] Zirka: Anyone in here know anything about power supplies?
[17:42:00] alunt2003: Anyone here got a "skycontrol" usb channel changer?
[17:43:00] |Slurpee|: praet, can u at least help me pick oput the cpu/mobo
[17:43:00] Zirka: I've been having a bunch of odd problems cropping up on my MythTV system, and I think the PSU is under powered. looking for a second opinion.
[17:44:00] praet: |Slurpee| that model for 89.99 is the right one with remote
[17:45:00] gnoob: all those cards like the pvr-500 250 or 150 all work great with linux and myth?
[17:45:00] Zirka: gnoob, Apparently they do.
[17:45:00] gnoob: the 500 sems like a good deal.
[17:45:00] Zirka: Though I've been having trouble with my PVR-150, but I think it's caused by a failing PSU.
[17:45:00] praet: gnoob yes they are all supported
[17:46:00] Krazylegz: Well, setting up the Mythbox for DVD playback was as easy as I had assumed.....install DVD-ROM drive in computer, boot.
[17:46:00] gnoob: cool
[17:47:00] |Slurpee|: prate, can u plz PM with me so i can order this stuff ?
[17:47:00] Krazylegz: Let's just hope that upgrading to a larger hard drive is also as easy as I think it will be.
[17:47:00] gnoob: I built a cheap computer and it's noisy. I do regret that somewhat.
[17:48:00] gnoob: considering it's an amd64 and could take advantage of cool-n-quiet and all that stuff.
[17:48:00] praet: |Slurpee| see pm
[17:48:00] Zirka: gnoob, Use a back end/front end set-up.
[17:49:00] praet: Zirka whats happening on your machine that pinots to a psu fail
[17:49:00] praet: *points
[17:49:00] Zirka: Just throw the back-end into a closet, then use a smaller, quieter computer as a front-end.
[17:49:00] Zirka: praet, hard disk seek/badCRC errors, despite changing IDE cables and hard disks.
[17:49:00] gnoob: Zirka; tha'ts my plan someday.
[17:50:00] Zirka: NIC won't access DNS addresses despite being properly configured
[17:50:00] Zirka: PVR-150 refuses to change channels.
[17:50:00] gnoob: I would like to build some small fanless mini boxes.
[17:50:00] gnoob: mini itx or something
[17:50:00] Zirka: gnoob, Just use an XBox for the time being. they're pretty damn quiet
[17:50:00] gnoob: and they are cheap huh?
[17:50:00] Zirka: $129 at GameStop for an in-store refurbished model.
[17:50:00] Zirka: Just don't try to do HD on them.
[17:51:00] gnoob: Interesting Idea.
[17:51:00] wole: can you use an ir remote with an xbox?
[17:51:00] Zirka: Yes.
[17:51:00] Krazylegz: I guess the XBoxen work well for frontends.
[17:51:00] Zirka: The official XBox remote is supposed to work.
[17:51:00] praet: |Slurpee| i am not seeing any pms from you.. make sure you are registered
[17:51:00] wole: don't you need to chip it?
[17:51:00] Zirka: No.
[17:51:00] Zirka: You do have to soft-mod it though.
[17:51:00] Krazylegz: http://www.killefiz.de/k/machines/xbox-mythtv-frontend/
[17:52:00] gnoob: so you just follow a linux isntall on the xbox then intlal myth and you are set?
[17:52:00] gnoob: do you have to mod it an all that?
[17:52:00] gnoob: ah
[17:52:00] Zirka: You have to mod it first.
[17:52:00] gnoob: my question was to late
[17:52:00] Zirka: The process is a little quirkier than installing Linux on a normal PC
[17:52:00] gnoob: but runs stable when it's completed?
[17:53:00] Zirka: Mmm hmmm
[17:53:00] gnoob: how long does somethign like that take to boot up

[17:55:00] gnoob: no, but have the PC for it. Kind of. The PC needs a few upgrades maybe hdd and ram.

[19:39:00] {alejandro}: uh wait

[19:40:00] laga: yep!
[19:40:00] {alejandro}: or just a patch
[19:40:00] {alejandro}: ok
[19:40:00] laga: just type the svn co thing and you've got a full checkout
[19:40:00] {alejandro}: rad

[19:42:00] Beirdo: poop: it's been in their forums for months too
[19:43:00] kormoc: oddly enough, I changed the time I grabbed from the default when I first installed myth, as I figured it might be a bit busy at the default time
[19:43:00] GreyFoxx: svn now supports a flag sent by zap2it to tell you when it's ok to next grab the listings. LEts them spread the load
[19:44:00] kormoc: ooh, that'll be nice
[19:44:00] GreyFoxx: But it only applies if you have myth auto fun mythfilldb for you. If you are using a cronjob it wont have any effect
[19:44:00] Beirdo: I'll stick to my cron job
[19:45:00] Beirdo: I trust cron to never crash
[19:45:00] kormoc: yeah, but how many people actually use cronjobs compaired to having myth do it?
[19:45:00] GreyFoxx: *Shrug*
[19:45:00] Beirdo: my backend process has been known to gack before :)
[19:45:00] GreyFoxx: I've never had myth do it
[19:45:00] Beirdo: me neither
[19:45:00] Beirdo: :)
[19:45:00] dev-: i have mine running at an off time already.. just picked a random number.. figured everyone would just copy and paste the default in heh
[19:45:00] GreyFoxx: but then I've been using myth since long before that abiity came along
[19:45:00] kormoc: Beirdo, you don't trust your backend to stay up for more then one night every 14 days?
[19:46:00] Beirdo: I trust anacron for cron duties
[19:46:00] Beirdo: it's what it was expressly designed for
[19:46:00] kormoc: anacron...

[19:46:00] kormoc: anacron remembers when, say a box is powered down and misses the cron time and will run it on power on
[19:47:00] Beirdo: yeah
[19:47:00] Beirdo: which is great
[19:47:00] kormoc: I had it on a server of mine that I had powered down for a month or so
[19:47:00] Beirdo: oh god. hehe
[19:47:00] Beirdo: that could make for fun
[19:47:00] kormoc: it had a cron script to run every night that took say, about 2 hours to run some db stuff...
[19:48:00] kormoc: so yeah... three days later, the box was ready to be used again

[19:48:00] GreyFoxx: but even that is gross
[19:48:00] Beirdo: I was under the impression it would do it ONCE
[19:48:00] Beirdo: and it's a great thing for use on machines that get turned off a lot
[19:49:00] kormoc: it launched them all at the same time... now keep in mind, this was awhile ago
[19:49:00] Beirdo: for a normal server, I use "normal" vixie cron
[19:49:00] kormoc: and maybe my config was foobared
[19:49:00] Beirdo: if it's on 24/7, no need for funky rescheduling
[19:49:00] kormoc: but yeah, the reason why I didn't kill it, it was my friends server, so I powered it on and left for the weekend, so he could get his website up, and welp... it was useless :P
[19:49:00] Beirdo: hehe
[19:49:00] Beirdo: nice
[19:50:00] Beirdo: next time, ya should write a cronjob with a lockfile
[19:50:00] Beirdo: :)
[19:50:00] Beirdo: so it CAN'T run 40 instances simultaneously
[19:50:00] Beirdo: "this job is still running, exiting"
[19:50:00] kormoc: heh, yeah, I've redone how I deal with cronjobs now, so hopefully that can never happen again on one of my boxes.
[19:50:00] GreyFoxx: or 40 of the same consectutively
[19:51:00] GreyFoxx: I'd be burning a crond at the stake if it acted like that hehe, but then that's just me :)

[22:16:00] dagfinnr: they could not be the same for the whole west-europe? and the xmltv doesent know the frequensies?
[22:17:00] ** dagfinnr = confused **
[22:17:00] Mulvane: Anyone know how to fix mythtv and mysql5?
[22:17:00] Mulvane: I've found a couple of 'fixes' that don't fix anything
[22:29:00] dagfinnr: strange,..seems that its just not working *mad*
[22:31:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: Suggestion: don't run MySQL 5 with Myth. Problem solved. :D
[22:31:00] dagfinnr: lol
[22:32:00] dagfinnr: so everyone here got the channels working without adjusting the freq, just choose what channels they want?
[22:35:00] dberry (n=dberry@pknat1.passkey.com) Quit ("Leaving")
[22:42:00] Mulvane: NightMonkey Wish it was that simple..
[22:44:00] kormoc: Mulvane, what's the issues you have?
[22:45:00] dagfinnr: now i've looked through the howto's..and i cant find anywhere where hhey're talking about channel frequency..is because i dont live in the us im experiencing all my problems?
[22:45:00] kormoc: there are a lot of folks who live outside of the us that have myth running fine.
[22:46:00] Mulvane: kormoc I can't fill my database..
[22:46:00] kormoc: Mulvane, what's the error you are getting?
[22:47:00] Mulvane: I'm doing a reinstall now..Gonna be a few..
[22:47:00] dagfinnr: kormoc, yeah..that was what i thought too ... but isnt there anywhere i can tune for channels? except the xmltv stuff?
[22:48:00] kormoc: donno. You're gonna have to ask someone who uses xmltv or similar
[22:48:00] kormoc: Mulvane, that's not really gonna help much with mysql errors...
[22:49:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: Why are you forced to run MySQL 5?
[22:49:00] Mulvane: Oh..I know..Doing it for other reasons..
[22:49:00] Mulvane: NightMonkey I run a central mysql server for my lan..Which happens to be 5 now
[22:49:00] dagfinnr: kormoc, what do you use to configure / get the program info?
[22:50:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: OK. But is there a specific application that you use that requires it? Why not just install a local MySQL instance on your myth box?
[22:50:00] kormoc: dagfinnr, I use xap2it, which sadly is us only right now.
[22:50:00] NightMonkey: (A MySQL 4.X instance, that is)
[22:51:00] dagfinnr: ah
[22:51:00] Mulvane: NightMonkey I'm looking that direction..I would prefer a 5.x fix though..
[22:52:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: Maybe SVN Myth supports 5.X. I run 0.18.1, and I don't think it will run with MySQL versions >= 5.
[22:53:00] Mulvane: Actually, I may have just found the fix
[22:53:00] Mulvane: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-393803-h . . . -mythtv.html
[22:54:00] dagfinnr: anyone who's not in the us here?
[22:54:00] Mulvane: I won't be in a month
[22:54:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: There you go. Love the Gentoo Forums.
[22:55:00] Mulvane: For that matter, I want be in any county in a month
[22:55:00] Mulvane: country even
[22:55:00] dagfinnr: hm
[22:55:00] kormoc: Mulvane, I was thinking that was the issue, but you said you tried other fixes, and that's the only issue there has been with mysql 5+ and myth.
[22:55:00] dagfinnr: if you come to norway, you could help me with my channel problem Mulvane :P
[22:58:00] Mulvane: dagfinnr Been to Norway.. Tromzo is a horridly cold town in November I might add
[23:00:00] TylerGalus: interesting.. could my problem of not being able to set up scheduled recordings be because i didn't have xmltv installed?
[23:01:00] dagfinnr: TylerGalus, well, if it isnt installed i guess you shouldnt be able to get the program information?
[23:01:00] TylerGalus: i did have listings in the program guide
[23:02:00] TylerGalus: so i could go through the steps of scheduling a recording but it wouldn't save
[23:03:00] dagfinnr: have you configured the buffer and the recordings dirs right?
[23:04:00] dagfinnr: in mythtv-setup
[23:04:00] dagfinnr: and the right permissions on the dirs
[23:04:00] kormoc: TylerGalus, you shouldn't need xmltv unless you are outside of the us I beleive
[23:04:00] Mulvane: love myth.. got a wonderful setup using mysql4, but I am upgrading the box, and the setup..
[23:05:00] Mulvane: Old box has 6 hauppauge 250's..
[23:05:00] Mulvane: New box has 6 550's
[23:05:00] kormoc: insane, why so many tuners?
[23:05:00] TylerGalus: afaik yes.. i am reinstalling it right now.. i had given the recording directory 0777 permissions.. that is the same as the store directory yes? (probaby should've used the official install doc instead of the gentoo one)
[23:05:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: Are you that guy in West Virginia with 22 sat dishes on his roof? ;)
[23:06:00] Mulvane: Well, I have 5 TV's plus a spare..
[23:06:00] Mulvane: Now I can watch 5 stations and have PIP on all of them of a diff channel  :-)
[23:06:00] TylerGalus: lol
[23:06:00] kormoc: TylerGalus, my /mnt/tv is owned by mythtv, so it only needs owner r+W
[23:06:00] Mulvane: Plus, I have a thing going on when I go out to sea..

[23:07:00] kormoc: talk about sensor overload...
[23:07:00] kormoc: 12 channels at once...
[23:07:00] TylerGalus: see that's the other thing i was asking earlier.. i had no mythtv user or group... like i said i believe the gentoo-wiki howto to be lacking
[23:07:00] Mulvane: I can record 12 shows at once now, encode to vcd, have wife burn to dvd, mail them, and sell them to those who just can't live without there shows
[23:07:00] NightMonkey: Whoah
[23:07:00] Mulvane: I can also download some of them for a higher price for quicker viewing
[23:07:00] kormoc: TylerGalus, check to see what user mythbackend is running is
[23:08:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: Don't talk about that here. The selling part.
[23:09:00] TylerGalus: well i removed mythtv and am re-installing from scratch following the docs on the myth site.. so i'm still in emerge hell right now ;) hopefully i'll find stuff the other guide missed
[23:09:00] Mulvane: Ah..Well, its more a service charge for labor and parts..
[23:09:00] NightMonkey: Mulvane: This channel is logged.
[23:10:00] kormoc: TylerGalus, what other parts? (and emerge hell? what issues are you having?)

[23:10:00] Mulvane: Going underway and this way, me and those in the know can still get all those tv shows we normally wouldn't get..
[23:10:00] Mulvane: 6 months in the gulf sucks enough..
[23:11:00] kormoc: I donno... I wouldn't mind spending 6 months in warm weather and sunny skys...
[23:11:00] mchou: this is bullshit!
[23:11:00] Mulvane: kormoc Well, there is the part of a large metal naval vessel that makes that not as fun as it sounds
[23:13:00] danieldk: for those who care: minimyth-gar has bee compiling for 10 straight hours now...
[23:13:00] ** kormoc blinks **
[23:13:00] kormoc: minimyth-gar?
[23:13:00] kormoc: Mulvane, I donno... Those uhh... seagulls can be quite... seagullish...
[23:13:00] danieldk: yeah i'm trying to build minimyth from gar
[23:13:00] NightMonkey: Myth, but a Myth that goes "GAR!"?
[23:13:00] TylerGalus: kormoc, just meant i was emerging myth right now (ie waiting for it to compile) and i figured i missed stuff following the wiki'd HOWTO since everything didn't work
[23:14:00] danieldk: but my trusty dual p3–800 is making slow progress....
[23:14:00] kormoc: danieldk, ahh, you're compiling the entire distro... no wonder it's taking so long
[23:14:00] kormoc: TylerGalus, it should be super painless on gentoo
[23:15:00] danieldk: kormoc: yeah...
[23:16:00] TylerGalus: well i had gotten it to the point of being able to watch channel 3.. (hadn't set up a remote to change channels yet) and when i went looking in the real docs for a way to change to another channel i saw mention of a mythtv user in the setup so i figured something was wrong in my setup
[23:17:00] kormoc: ahh, on gentoo that's not the case
[23:17:00] TylerGalus: oh?
[23:18:00] kormoc: my mythbackend runs as root
[23:18:00] Mulvane: On a closed network, it really doesn't matter what user it is..
[23:18:00] Mulvane: At least until they find a way to run remote code thru tv
[23:18:00] kormoc: as for changing of channels, typing the number will change it.
[23:18:00] TylerGalus: hmm that wasn't working either..
[23:19:00] TylerGalus: i'll have to see when the emerge is done whether i run into the same problems again
[23:19:00] kormoc: Mulvane, mythbackend is a server, a carefully crafted attack on a buffer overflow would do the same as if it was on apache or any other server, hance why most distros use the mythtv user. it is a security risk as great as running anything else as root.
[23:20:00] Mulvane: kormoc I know this..But are you using mythbackend to server frontends outside your closed network?
[23:20:00] TylerGalus: hehe they'll have to get past my firewall first
[23:21:00] kormoc: Mulvane, my mythweb can be viewed from outside the network, and it could allow people outside the network to break into the machine. It is a possability.
[23:22:00] kormoc: is it likely? not at all. Is it worth the few minutes of time to set up so myth can't do much to hurt even if the unlikely happens? most distros seem to think so.
[23:22:00] ** kormoc shrugs. **
