[00:30:00] PaulWay: Hi all!
[00:30:00] jemarcks: hey... is Freshrpms hosed today?
[00:31:00] PaulWay: Let's have a look here...
[00:32:00] PaulWay: While I look, answer me this: is there anyway to get transcode to not segfault if something goes wrong in its reading stream?
[00:32:00] PaulWay: jemarcks: Freshrpms looks OK to me here in .au...
[00:33:00] jemarcks: hmmm...
[00:33:00] PaulWay: what's going wrong with Freshrpms for you?
[00:33:00] jemarcks: No Match for argument: nvidia-graphics7667-kmdl-2.6.13–1.1532_FC4smp
[00:33:00] jemarcks: Nothing to do
[00:34:00] jemarcks: I am doing a fresh FC4 install of mythtv today using jarods guide.
[00:34:00] jemarcks: the nvidia driver isnt being found
[00:34:00] PaulWay: Do you know where in the US it's hosted?
[00:34:00] jemarcks: nope
[00:34:00] jemarcks: yum upgrade worked after I installed fc4
[00:34:00] PaulWay: Because sometimes I've had problems with it and all of its mirrors and its fixed itself in an hour or two, and I figured that it was half-way through some important update.
[00:35:00] PaulWay: And now you're getting this.
[00:35:00] PaulWay: BTW, are you running a dual-processor or dual core machine?
[00:35:00] jemarcks: yeah... thats what i thought...
[00:35:00] jemarcks: Im running a P4 single core wiht HT
[00:35:00] PaulWay: If so, what type – I like being jealous... :-)
[00:35:00] jemarcks: 2.8G
[00:35:00] PaulWay: Oh, OK.
[00:36:00] jemarcks: 512k ram, 160G disk
[00:37:00] jemarcks: soon.... the 'many core' machines will come... hehehe
[00:37:00] PaulWay: Yeah, that's what I'm hanging out for.
[00:38:00] PaulWay: Mind you, between now and then I hope a lot more software becomes multi-threaded.
[00:38:00] jemarcks: true... a lot of it is just 'recompiled' so it doesnt take advantage of new features
[00:38:00] PaulWay: The games are going to be the hardest – the game writers have pretty much said that using both processors is a _big_ challenge.
[00:39:00] jemarcks: true... unless you start from scratch
[00:39:00] PaulWay: Well, they're going to say 'takes advantage of new processor features' meaning 'we recompiled it with a compiler that supported using it, so it must have made it faster!'
[00:40:00] jemarcks: lol.. yeah right
[00:40:00] PaulWay: The problem for the game writers is that it's very much a linear process – get input from user, decide on where everything has moved to, render screen, display, repeat.
[00:41:00] PaulWay: The 'render screen' is the part that's hardest, and that chews up 80% of the CPU time per frame; you have to split _that_ across two processors to get the real speedup.
[00:41:00] PaulWay: Anyway.
[00:41:00] PaulWay: Have you used transcode much?
[00:42:00] jemarcks: not much yet

[00:43:00] jemarcks: it wasnt working right on my last backend box that i setup back in May. Then, last week, it crashed and I had to do a total rebuild
[00:43:00] PaulWay: !!! What happened?
[00:43:00] jemarcks: hence, im here today
[00:44:00] jemarcks: ummm... well i tried to su root and it said 'no such use' :O
[00:44:00] jemarcks: no such user
[00:44:00] PaulWay: I have a feeling that the power supply I got with the Antec case (350W) is not up to driving three drives, two DTV cards, an Athlon 3200 and the rest of the system.
[00:44:00] PaulWay: oooh, that's got to be bad.
[00:44:00] PaulWay: what did /etc/passwd say?
[00:44:00] jemarcks: i think you may be at the limit too
[00:44:00] jemarcks: i couldnt access it
[00:45:00] jemarcks: rebooting just caused lots of rc.d/ error line number bla bla illegal instruction....

[00:46:00] jemarcks: i tried for hours to recover it but couldnt.. .
[00:46:00] PaulWay: Yeah, that sounds like something went tragically wrong with the file system – I take it fsck tried and failed to get it working again.
[00:47:00] jemarcks: how do you restart nfs?
[00:47:00] PaulWay: um, service nfs restart
[00:47:00] jemarcks: i updated fstab.... do i have to restart it?
[00:47:00] PaulWay: you're mounting a remote nfs share that you've just put in fstab?
[00:48:00] jemarcks: no.. im exporting my /video dir to my frontend who mounts it
[00:49:00] PaulWay: Righto. So you've updated the fstab on the remote machine and the exports file on the local machine and you want to restart nfs to share the new mount point?
[00:49:00] jemarcks: already done
[00:50:00] PaulWay: OK, I'm a bit puzzled by what you're doing.
[00:50:00] PaulWay: This probably means it's still too early in the morning for me.
[00:51:00] PaulWay: You've got the exported share in /etc/exports on the server but it's not being shared yet?
[00:51:00] jemarcks: trying to export my /video partion
[00:53:00] PaulWay: So you've got /video in your /etc/exports on the server, and /video in your /etc/fstab on the client – good so far?
[00:54:00] jemarcks: im working on what to put in my /etc/exports file
[00:54:00] PaulWay: If you're still working it out, try using system-config-nfs as root.

[01:00:00] jemarcks: /etc/exports has /video nugget(rw,insecure,all_squash)
[01:00:00] jemarcks: this is on my master backend im building
[01:01:00] PaulWay: righto – did you do that in service-config-nfs? If so, it'll automatically have restarted nfs to start it sharing.
[01:01:00] PaulWay: Otherwise I think you have to do a service nfs restart
[01:01:00] jemarcks: i did that manually
[01:01:00] jemarcks: the frontend /etc/fstab has htpc1:/video /video nfs auto 0 0
[01:02:00] jemarcks: the frontend still doesnt see it
[01:02:00] PaulWay: righto, then – have you created the directory /video on nugget?
[01:02:00] jemarcks: :/
[01:02:00] jemarcks: no. /video is on the backend
[01:02:00] jemarcks: i want nugget to mount it
[01:03:00] PaulWay: But in order to mount it, you need a mount point, which is a directory with the same name as the mount point.
[01:03:00] PaulWay: So to mount /video on nugget (from anywhere), you have to make a /video directory.
[01:03:00] PaulWay: Then mount fools the file system into thinking that references to that directory actually go through nfs.
[01:03:00] PaulWay: instead of looking on the disk, e.g.
[01:04:00] jemarcks: yes, i have a /video dir on nugget. its empty
[01:04:00] jemarcks: how do i make nugget mount it

[01:05:00] PaulWay: I think I know the problem here – have you reconfigured the firewall on htpc1 to allow nugget to access NFS?
[01:05:00] jemarcks: i disabled the firewall
[01:05:00] PaulWay: Ah.
[01:05:00] PaulWay: If you haven't already done so, do "service nfs restart" on htpc12
[01:05:00] PaulWay: s/12/1/
[01:06:00] jemarcks: ok... its restarted... lots of green [ok]
[01:06:00] PaulWay: Righto.
[01:06:00] PaulWay: I take it this is on a LAN that's protected from the internet by a suitable firewall... :-)

[01:13:00] PaulWay: The way I'd proceed is to run ethereal on nugget and see if it's a protocol problem.

[03:09:00] banyan: The only think I've been able to find at all about this issue is switching PCI slots, which did nothing for me.

[04:11:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Howdy. You might be interested in using some ohter tools for authoring.
[04:11:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: I put this together: https://www.ilikelinux.com/howto/pvr3502dvd/
[04:12:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: But, I dunno what your setup is, so it might not be well matched.
[04:12:00] banyan: shockvalue: it's creating a directory called DVD which is getting filled with the contents of the DVD.
[04:12:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Not that the mythtv.org docs instructions don't also work. :)
[04:12:00] ShockValue: not really interested in "authoring" per se.. Im just trying to rip the dvd's to a file in full quality.. MythDVD is working ok, but i dont want to miss out on other tools if they're available for that
[04:12:00] banyan: One of those things will be a great huge VOB file, which is the movie.
[04:12:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Ah, you're ripping. My bad.
[04:14:00] jd86: ever since i switched my spare tuner from using tuner in to svideo in, with cable box.. my mpeg2 pvr150 has crappy looking channels... with fuzz on some
[04:14:00] banyan: I'd like to check that out, NightMonkey.
[04:14:00] banyan: I've had some questionable luck with AVIdemux.
[04:15:00] NightMonkey: banyan: You should use the latest version – I use 2.0.42.
[04:15:00] NightMonkey: banyan: But, like DVD authoring in general in Linux, things are a bit shaky ;).
[04:16:00] NightMonkey: But that reminds me that I need to put "Known Good" software versions on there...
[04:17:00] banyan: As apparently is also the use of wireless.
[04:17:00] NightMonkey: banyan: Yeah, other than 802.11b, which is fairly well supported. g/a isn't really ready for the primest of times...
[04:18:00] ShockValue: anyone know how to make xine choose the "en" language for the audio stream? i know you can do it with -alang en in mplayer, but i cant seem to find how to do it with xine
[04:22:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Hmm... sounds like a locale issue. What does the shell command "locale" give you?
[04:24:00] ShockValue: LANG=
[04:24:00] ShockValue: blank
[04:24:00] banyan: odd
[04:24:00] ShockValue: wehre is that typically set?
[04:24:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: What's funny is that is how my desktop box is. Never had a problem, but I don't use xine.
[04:25:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: What is "LC_ALL" set to?
[04:25:00] ShockValue: blank
[04:25:00] ShockValue: thhe rest = POSIX
[04:26:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Ah, I believe that must be set. I have mine as "LC_ALL=en_us", change to your local flavor.
[04:26:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: That's distro specific where that gets set.
[04:27:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: More info in "man locale" if you want more in-depth info.
[04:27:00] ShockValue: gracias
[04:28:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: I'm using Gentoo, and it is in /etc/env.d/02locale. So, wherever your shell enironment vars are set is where you need to set it.
[04:28:00] NightMonkey: Ah, sorry, mine is "LC_ALL=en_US". Might matter.
[04:31:00] ShockValue: NightMonkey: i use gentoo as well.. i didnt have a 02locale file
[04:31:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Weird.
[04:31:00] ShockValue: so i made that file and it is now this:
[04:31:00] ShockValue: LC_ALL=en_US
[04:31:00] ShockValue: LANG=en_US
[04:32:00] ShockValue: do i need quotes around that? seems like i might
[04:34:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Yes. And, just fyi, that's all I have in that file. From looking at the locale docs, the LANG value is optional. LC_ALL will populate all the necessary LC_* variables.
[04:34:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: So, yes, I have 'LC_ALL="en_US"' and that's it.
[04:35:00] ShockValue: thanks
[04:35:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: Don't forget to do "env-update && source /etc/profile".
[04:35:00] NightMonkey: ShockValue: In all your shells. Might be best to either reboot, or restart X, if you are using it.
[04:35:00] ShockValue: yeah, i was just gonna reboot as soon as this dvd is ripped

[04:52:00] banyan: I'm removing commercials. That never used to work is why I asked. I'd select A and B and it would just look at me funny.
[04:52:00] NightMonkey: banyan: Well, yeah, my doc doesn't go into avidmux2 specifics. I think that I used those markers to indicate what to crop.
[04:52:00] NightMonkey: banyan: I think I just hit "delete".
[04:53:00] NightMonkey: banyan: And what would be between the markers would be zapped.
[04:53:00] banyan: Ah, so you could save between the markers or delete between them.
[04:53:00] NightMonkey: banyan: I think I only used them to delete. Then, the remaining file is what I save.
[04:55:00] NightMonkey: banyan: Would be nice if avidmux2 could talk to Mysql to get the cutlists... Nuvexport does that, but I never really relied on Myth's guesses for DVDs.
[04:55:00] NightMonkey: banyan: Much of avidemux2 was not intuitive – even I had to print and read their guide ;).
[04:56:00] NightMonkey: banyan: And I had to do the same for DVD Styler. Creating buttons was a mystery to me, even though DVD Styler hides things well.
[04:58:00] banyan: nuvexport is too messed up tho.
[04:58:00] NightMonkey: Now, if only k3b would just "do it all" for video DVDs...
[04:58:00] banyan: I gave up on it quite some time ago.
[04:59:00] NightMonkey: I should really flesh out the avidemux2 section of my doc, but I'd really just be duplicating much of the avidemux2 guides. And they will change, making my doc stale quickly.

[19:08:00] r2: triplep, I"m running a PVR-500, close enough I think
[19:08:00] r2: FunkyELF, I'm trying to get it to work reliably with my DCT-6200
[19:09:00] FunkyELF: I have a Scientific Atlanta 3250
[19:09:00] triplep: r2 : did you set the cards up as v4l or mpeg2 cards ?
[19:09:00] FunkyELF: have you gotten it to work at all yet?
[19:09:00] r2: FunkyELF, sporadically, not consistently
[19:10:00] r2: triplep, mpeg2
[19:10:00] FunkyELF: I also have a PVR-500...how do you set it up to show the firewire input?
[19:10:00] Cardoe: ivtv0 warning: i2c client addr: 0x44 not found for command 0x80287610!
[19:10:00] Cardoe: anyone remember what that means?
[19:10:00] r2: FunkyELF, the way I understand it, the pvr-500 has nothing to do with the firewire input
[19:11:00] triplep: k, i just reset my cards to that, i think that was part of the problem, along with some framebuffer issues
[19:11:00] Hoxzer: is somebody familiar with "error parsing parametres" problem?
[19:11:00] r2: Cardoe, when I was getting that, it was because I had a wrong firmware going to it ... upgrading to ivtv-0.4.0 and a better firmware version helped
[19:12:00] r2: Hoxzer, no, but I've gotten it every time I try to import the channel icons
[19:12:00] triplep: sweet i'm getting black screen with some color flicker, which is acta=ually a huge improvement
[19:12:00] FunkyELF: r2, yeah, i Know...I'm trying to get it to stop showing the TV and start showing the firewire input
[19:12:00] FunkyELF: but when I hit the 'y' button iw just switches from "1: tuner 0" to "2: tuner 0"
[19:13:00] triplep: r2 : did you leave inputs as video0 and video1 ?
[19:14:00] Cardoe: r2: it's not my error
[19:14:00] r2: FunkyELF, I'm still stuck on the test-mpeg2 stage
[19:14:00] Cardoe: r2: and it's from 0.4.0 using the recommended firmware
[19:14:00] r2: FunkyELF, I'm assuming you already set it up as an input connection in myth-setup?
[19:14:00] r2: Cardoe, sorry, that's what fixed it for me
[19:15:00] r2: triplep, one moment ...
[19:15:00] triplep: k, thanks dude, i appreciate all of your help
[19:15:00] FunkyELF: yeah, but I'm not sure what input / node and all of the other fields I have to fill in
[19:15:00] r2: triplep, yes, video0 and video1 are what I'm using (Tuner0 of each)
[19:16:00] jemarcks: is anybody seting up a backend box today?

[21:47:00] r2: pookSter, I get the "could not connect" but everything works just fine ... not sure what that is, but I don't think it is related to your first line of bad Huffman code
[21:47:00] pookSter: ok, thanks, I'll go down that road first then
[21:47:00] r2: abarbaccia, not necessarily ... I have a set top box that plugs in to a tuner via composite cable, but I also have the cable coax direct to the tuner card, so I have those two independently
[21:48:00] r2: (actually, the tuner card is a dual-tuner pvr-500, so I have three inputs)
[21:49:00] r2: abarbaccia, the catch is that the coax tuners can only get (for me) channels 2–78 ... the remaining are digital stations and require the set top box to decode
[21:49:00] pookSter: r2 , I see the mythfrontend screen flash, then it shuts down and I get that error, so I can't even get to the configuration screen.
[21:49:00] r2: pookSter, does /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log have anything informational?

[21:50:00] pookSter: The backend seems to run ok
[21:51:00] pookSter: but I guess it might tell me why it regected the frontend?
[21:51:00] r2: pookSter, many people work the backend as root and the frontend as a user ... the rights are easily different
[21:52:00] r2: pookSter, (database rights are completely different from any filesystem or unix rights)

[22:47:00] Nothingman: trying to restart mysql atm
[22:47:00] Nothingman: not sure why the init script won't restart it
[22:48:00] r2: Nothingman, are you using fedora, gentoo, debian, ... ?
[22:48:00] Nothingman: ubuntu
[22:48:00] r2: Nothingman, okay, the one I haven't played with ... "/etc/init.d/mysql stop" doesn't do anything?
[22:48:00] r2: Nothingman, (or where-ever the script is located)
[22:49:00] purplefrog: Maybe mysql is not running. Use ps to see if it's running, and you can just "kill" it if it is.
[22:49:00] Nothingman: stopping it works
[22:50:00] Nothingman: "/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed"
[22:51:00] r2: Nothingman, you started it back up, no errors, and "pgrep -l mysqld" shows a couple of processes?

[22:52:00] Nothingman: "Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!"
[22:53:00] Nothingman: all three of those lines when I do "sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start"
[22:53:00] purplefrog: wiggy.
[22:53:00] purplefrog: is there a /var/run/mysqld directory?
[22:54:00] r2: Nothingman, hmmm ... I guess I'd have to look at your /etc/init.d/mysql to know why it's complaining like that ...
[22:54:00] Nothingman: purplefrog: yes

[23:03:00] emes: xris: are you planning on supporting export to an ipod-playable format in nuvexport?
[23:03:00] engie: Hi. I've (finally!) got myth controlled by lirc. How do I get the up/down buttons to scroll through the list of currently selected tracks in mythmusic?
[23:03:00] USlacker (n=GMartin@pool-70-20-246-50.phil.east.verizon.net) has left #mythtv-users
[23:03:00] xris: emes: why? ipods can play mpeg
[23:04:00] emes: xris: it only works with .m4v, .mp4, and .mov containers
[23:05:00] xris: emes: there was someone on here the other night who was playing files straight from his pvr-250
[23:06:00] emes: "straight" doesn't help if it's encoded to mpeg-4 by mythtv
[23:07:00] xris: emes: but svcd, dvc, dvcd, etc should work
[23:07:00] xris: anyway, I'm happy to take submissions. As long as ffmpeg or transcode supports the output format, it should be pretty easy to modify one of the existing exporters to support it.
[23:08:00] xris: I actually don't know all that much about ffmpeg, etc.
[23:08:00] emes: xris: here is a guide on how to rip a dvd to the ipod, using handbrake, (open source ripper for os x)
[23:08:00] emes: http://diveintomark.org/howto/ipod-dvd-ripping-guide/
[23:09:00] xris: doesn't help if the tools aren't available for linux.. osx has quicktime, linux doesn't
[23:09:00] emes: it uses ffmpeg
[23:10:00] xris: ah
[23:10:00] xris: well, shouldn't be hard to figure out how it works. I can't work on it, though (no way to test or even play back the files — not to mention that my arm starts killing me if I spend more than a few minutes on the computer)

[23:13:00] purplefrog: nope.
[23:14:00] abarbaccia: anybody use ivtv0.4?
[23:14:00] purplefrog: yeah. It conflicts with the PCHDTV 3000 drivers, so I can't get my ATSC card working.

[23:17:00] abarbaccia: hurm – i think im just sticking with 0.3.2
[23:17:00] laga: purplefrog: well, don't install any new versions then.
