[00:27:00] ShockValue: theres a section in the documentation about backup and restore etc of your myth database. one of the options in there is to "drop" the database so you can start over

[00:43:00] ** mishehu sighs. **
[00:43:00] kormoc: mishehu, just set it to 3 or something, find the station you want and set it later

[00:59:00] FunkyELF: hey guys. I live in Florida and recently have experienced two short power glitches and have come to realize that MythTV or linux in general is not very reboot friendly
[00:59:00] kormoc: why's that?
[00:59:00] FunkyELF: both times I had to run fsck.jfs /dev/vg/store just to be able to mount the thing
[00:59:00] mishehu: FunkyELF: sounds like a configuration problem on your behalf.
[00:59:00] mishehu: that's a filesystem issue
[00:59:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, yeah.
[00:59:00] mishehu: that's not linux or mythtv
[00:59:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, EXT3 is more robust then JFS.
[01:00:00] MohShami: kormoc: my freqid is NULL in all values, does that have anything to do with it?
[01:00:00] mishehu: I'd use reiser or xfs
[01:00:00] kormoc: MohShami, I'd say so, but I'm not a expert
[01:00:00] kormoc: mishehu, ext3 with index_dirs is quite the speed demon.
[01:00:00] FunkyELF: okay...well heres another thing. When the system rebooted on me and didn't mount the filesystem it wound up starting mythbackend which started recording things onto /mnt/store...the problem is that this wasn't mounted so it was actually putting things on my / partition.
[01:00:00] mishehu: I'm actually using reiser4 on my myth box, nice atomic writes
[01:01:00] mishehu: kormoc: well, though I personally don't like ext3 much, I'd use it over jfs
[01:01:00] FunkyELF: by the time I stopped mythbackend fixed the filesystem and remounted it I went back into Myth and saw that there were entries from when it tried to resume the recording but when I went to delete them, they didn't disappear probably becasue it did not find them on the filesystem so they remained in the list
[01:02:00] mishehu: FunkyELF: that's typical mount behavior
[01:02:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, that's something that just can't really be delt with. The os doesn't realize that your /mnt is 'system critical' and thus it just does what it can. If you can come up with a better way to figure that stuff out, I'm sure a lot of people would love to know
[01:02:00] mishehu: there is a mount option somewhere that will allow "transparency"
[01:02:00] kormoc: mishehu, any preticular reasons?
[01:02:00] FunkyELF: I had to stop thebackend, unmount /mnt/store (mounted from /dev/vg/store) then copy the files from /mnt/store (from / ) somewhere, remount /dev/vg/store and then copy those files there so that when I went to delete them it'd be happy
[01:02:00] mishehu: kormoc: I know a lot more people who use xfs, ext3, reiser, and reiser4 than I know who use jfs. I have most of my experieince with reiser, though before reiser I did use some ext3.
[01:03:00] mishehu: and of course, before that ext2
[01:03:00] mishehu: FunkyELF: welcome to the wonderful world of computers.
[01:03:00] kormoc: mishehu, yeah, I ment why arecha a fan of ext3. I'm just wondering
[01:03:00] FunkyELF: yeah...there is no way Myth is for beginers...I'm suprised I was able to fix it
[01:04:00] mishehu: kormoc: I find it to be a bit on the slow side, especially if you are doing multiple writes.
[01:04:00] FunkyELF: I do think that Myth should have removed it from the database of "recorded programs" even tho it wasn't able to delete it from the filesystem.
[01:04:00] Juski: I thought that mythtv isn't for beginners is a kind of 'given'
[01:04:00] mishehu: it's fine for 90% read only situations
[01:04:00] kormoc: mishehu, fair nuff.
[01:04:00] kormoc: mishehu, it seems to benchmark right bout adverage in all cases, not preticuallry fast on anything
[01:04:00] FunkyELF: Juski, I figured the setup for it was not for beginers but once it was up and running it was pretty user friendly
[01:04:00] mishehu: kormoc: not to mention, I do run a number of mail servers that use maildirs on them, and ext3 would bomb on them. reiser and reiser4 pack them in quite nicely.
[01:05:00] kormoc: mishehu, but with index_dir on, it tends to speed up to near riser4 speeds
[01:05:00] mishehu: kormoc: what is the cost of using index_dir?
[01:05:00] FunkyELF: well...here is another problem I have been having....tell me if there is a solution
[01:05:00] kormoc: mishehu, not much. slightly larger inodes.
[01:06:00] mishehu: kormoc: I'd imagine still best for mostly read-only environments though... probably doesn't affect write speed correct?
[01:06:00] FunkyELF: When the power goes out momentarily, about half of the computers in my house come back on, but the other half doesn't. Is there a way without a UPS to make sure that the compuer is running as soon as the power comes back on?
[01:06:00] Juski: heck, anything with a TV card in it can be a fscking headache. you just have to look at tvcards.com/messageboard to see that for yourself
[01:06:00] kormoc: mishehu, right, write speeds stay the same. it's only a b-tree has of the dirs
[01:06:00] Juski: FunkyELF: usually a BIOS setting
[01:07:00] FunkyELF: Juski, really?...what is it typically called?
[01:07:00] mishehu: kormoc: well, you know, to be fair to jfs, I'd choose jfs over ntfs any time of day
[01:07:00] mishehu: heh
[01:07:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, something like powerstate after loss
[01:07:00] Juski: erm... it's under power management options on my BIOSes
[01:07:00] kormoc: mishehu, hehe, fair nuff :)
[01:07:00] mishehu: kormoc: if you don't know how ugly ntfs is, just read the brief commentary on it on partition image's website.
[01:08:00] Juski: normally 3 options for restoring on powerup of the PSU: 1. power on 2. enter standby 3. stay off
[01:08:00] FunkyELF: I'm wondering if I should start using a different file system. I chose JFS because I read somewhere that it can delete files faster than any other filesysem and that is really important in Myth
[01:08:00] Juski: I can delete a 5GB file in seconds with ext3.. I dunno what all the fuss is about
[01:08:00] kormoc: mishehu, yeah, I've taken a gander before and I try not to venture back there again
[01:08:00] mishehu: "gee, let's put our cluster bitmap as a file that it inofitself can get fragmented to shit..."
[01:08:00] FunkyELF: Both times my system powered down I had to run fsck.jfs....does anyone here think that if I was a different FS this wouldn't have happened?
[01:08:00] kormoc: Juski, yeah, that's the thing, a few sec is to slow
[01:09:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, it's partly your distro as well
[01:09:00] mishehu: FunkyELF: more likely than not going to happen on reiser4. reiser4 is an atomic filesystem.
[01:09:00] FunkyELF: Gentoo
[01:09:00] Juski: I've never found that to be the case, even with 150GB of recordings
[01:09:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, gentoo should have automatically fscked on bootup
[01:09:00] mishehu: err
[01:09:00] mishehu: that's confusing what I typed
[01:09:00] mishehu: more likely NOT going to happen on reiser4
[01:09:00] mishehu: since it is an atomic filesystem.
[01:09:00] FunkyELF: kormoc, I don't think it knew what kind of filesystem it was....it is an LVM2 logical volume
[01:10:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, that doesn't really matter.
[01:10:00] mishehu: however, requires patching of the kernel, but for a gentoo user it's probably already patched
[01:10:00] mishehu: heh
[01:10:00] Juski: well – looks like that problem emerging mythmusic last night hasn't gone away with a -lcd USE flag.. hmmpph
[01:10:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, it setups the LVM before it attempts to mount the vg
[01:10:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, it then should go, ooh, it needs to be fscked. and fsck it and then mount it
[01:10:00] kormoc: FunkyELF, it might be that jfs doesn't support the 'needs to be fscked
[01:10:00] kormoc: ' tag?
[01:11:00] Juski: I'm getting "error: `outputText' undeclared (first use this function)" at line 1521 of playbackbox.cpp
[01:11:00] Juski: does the same if I try to compile the source myself

[01:19:00] Chutt: i have a naked computer on my desk all the time
[01:19:00] Chutt: need to for work
[01:19:00] FunkyELF: fman, paper clips work nice for the on off switches ;-) plus it feels cool, like you're hotwireing a computer
[01:19:00] Chutt: has a pci card with a 2" lcd display on it, can't see it if it's in the case
[01:20:00] guitar256: mythtv-setup results in: "Unknown database 'mythconverg'" — dropping the database via the docs didn't delete it well enough --- how do i delete everything and start over?
[01:20:00] FunkyELF: Chutt, was is the point of the 2" lcd display on a PCI card?
[01:20:00] Chutt: dev kit for one of our chips
[01:21:00] FunkyELF: Chutt, what kind of chip?
[01:21:00] Chutt: cell phone processor, mostly
[01:21:00] fman: FunkyElf – paper clips? how
[01:21:00] Chutt: fman, if you have an extra case, just stick it next to the motherboard
[01:21:00] kormoc: guitar256, it says it's a unknown database, it's gone.
[01:21:00] Chutt: easy to run the power cable that way
[01:21:00] fman: Chutt – thats my plan
[01:21:00] kormoc: guitar256, you need to recreate it new, as the docs say and then myth will run
[01:21:00] Chutt: and you can even mount the power supply + harddrives
[01:22:00] Chutt: to keep them out of the way
[01:22:00] FunkyELF: fman, use anything conductive where the case's little wires would normall go from the power button to the mobo
[01:22:00] guitar256: kormac, i've been doing that, i get access denied errors
[01:23:00] FunkyELF: just put it between the two pins for the power switch to get it going, then move the paper clip away
[01:23:00] kormoc: guitar256, then your mysql isn't setup right
[01:23:00] guitar256: it was setup just fine before i yum upgraded
[01:24:00] guitar256: this is why linux = FC4 is a pile
[01:24:00] FunkyELF: can you run mysql -u root -pnew-password mythconverge

[01:36:00] ShockValue: guitar256: how do I do things like add posters, and IMDB#'s and such?
[01:36:00] guitar256: i can set up the database when i cut and paste commands, it's real simple that way
[01:37:00] guitar256: but when i get access denied's that aren't suppose to be there, things get iffy
[01:37:00] Chutt: errr, that 'access denied' was supposed to be there
[01:37:00] Chutt: since you dropped the database and didn't recreate it.

[02:11:00] hari_seldon99: My mythtv box is an old compaq deskpro 800 Mhz with Hauppauge PVR 350
[02:12:00] hari_seldon99: I wanted to install another tuner so I can watch tv & record simultaneously
[02:12:00] hari_seldon99: So I bought a low end Hauppauge wintv go for the second tuner, but the performance is horrible when mythtv uses it (picture is skippy)
[02:13:00] kormoc: hari_seldon99, that is because you bought a software encoder. it uses the cpu to do all the display work, and your box is a bit too slow for that
[02:13:00] hari_seldon99: Can I use Video motion compensation to enhance this, or must I get another pvr series card?
[02:13:00] Juski: another pvr card
[02:13:00] hari_seldon99: kormoc: Yeah, I guessed that that was it, but this is REALLY bad. I did not expect it to perform THIS poorly

[02:15:00] hari_seldon99: oh
[02:15:00] hari_seldon99: ok
[02:16:00] hari_seldon99: well when I watch live tv on the crap tuner, even then it's bad
[02:16:00] hari_seldon99: Is that "playback", or does that count as recording?
[02:16:00] Juski: hari_seldon99: even then it's depending on the CPU to encode it
[02:17:00] hari_seldon99: right,right
[02:17:00] hari_seldon99: I get it
[02:17:00] kormoc: live tv is still recorded and then played back, hence why you can pause it

[03:37:00] kormoc: so, why'd you poke me then? :P
[03:37:00] xris: mind is too busy pondering server disasters, then
[03:38:00] xris: poked because you're not sleeping. heh.
[03:38:00] kormoc: ahh
[03:38:00] kormoc: just took a dose of nyquil
[03:38:00] kormoc: put on a movie

[03:40:00] xris: better to just get an airport

[03:42:00] xris: airport extreme apparently has awesome range
[03:42:00] CyberKnet: hmm.
[03:42:00] xris: then again, my friend who does a lot of wireless stuff has a HUGE antenna.. back when he lived in an apartment bldg, he had about a mile range. could see like 500 access points.
[03:43:00] CyberKnet: wow.
[03:43:00] xris: that was powered by a little self-contained thing with power over ethernet.
[03:43:00] xris: he ran cat5 up to the roof and plugged the box/antenna in up there.
[03:44:00] xris: then he bought a house and lives nowhere near as interesting as the university district.
[03:44:00] xris: he's big in the seattlewireless group
[03:45:00] CyberKnet: omni-directional antenna that picked up a mile away?

[03:50:00] CyberKnet: yeah, but I've had the router for about six months now =)
[03:52:00] xris: odd that you get such sucky range. firmware upgrade?
[03:52:00] CyberKnet: I think I must have lead in my walls or something =)
[03:52:00] xris: lot of power cables can do it.

[04:32:00] mchou: CyberKnet: first of all move the router farther away from the desktop CPU that's there

[04:48:00] ** rpete considers putting the router in the basement **

[04:48:00] geoff: rpete yeah, and I have thin floors compared the rest of my house so it works great
[04:49:00] Lightning: that would make me wonder if maybe the mysql port is blocked or a mysql setting for local only connects was set and took effect
[04:49:00] CyberKnet: oh no, I have space.
[04:49:00] CyberKnet: just it would only reach that one room

[06:23:00] ShockValue: i installed a larger hard drive.. copied all my recordings over to it, and then restarted
[06:23:00] geoff: xris: i get to the first line of status.php :)
[06:23:00] xris: geoff: start with the program listing
[06:23:00] ShockValue: now mythtv doesnt see any of my recordings and wont play livetv.. (both use that drive) .. what'd i screw up?
[06:24:00] ShockValue: i replicated the exact structure of the drive.. but myth doenst see the recordings for some reason
[06:24:00] geoff: xris: doesn't get past here:
[06:24:00] geoff: / Get the address/port of the master machine

[06:24:00] geoff: $statusport = get_backend_setting('BackendStatusPort');

[06:25:00] xris: geoff: separate machine for webserver?
[06:25:00] xris: otherwise, start adding them inside of get_backend_setting()
[06:26:00] geoff: no, on same
[06:26:00] geoff: changed to program_listings and doesn't make it past here:
[06:26:00] geoff: require_once "includes/init.php";
[06:27:00] ShockValue: so i did a "copy -r /tv/* /mnt/newdrive" then I replaced the drive and mounted "newdrive" as "/tv"... what else do i need to do to get it workin again? :)
[06:27:00] fryfrog: ShockValue: what user does mythbackend run as? if it isn't root, it may be a simple permissions issue
[06:27:00] fryfrog: ie, chown or chmod to fix
[06:28:00] ShockValue: fryfrog: it starts with an init script.. so i assume root? I did a chmod -R 777 /tv as well.. which didnt change anything
[06:28:00] ShockValue: well, at least it didnt fix anything.. it changed the permissions :)
[06:28:00] xris: geoff: dunno. only way I know how to debug that stuff is to walk through the program until I figure out what's killing it.
[06:29:00] fryfrog: ShockValue: if you start the front/back with an "all" verbosity, i bet the error in the logs will make the problem obvious
[06:29:00] fryfrog: for the FE, simply adding "-v all" will do it
[06:29:00] fryfrog: i think the same is true for BE, but i use gentoo and its part of a config file
[06:29:00] ShockValue: thanks fryfrog, ill try that
[06:30:00] ShockValue: i mean, what i did should theoretically work, right?
[06:30:00] ShockValue: just copied the whole drive to a new drive, then mounted the new on in the old one's place?
[06:31:00] fryfrog: yeah, i've done it before too
[06:31:00] geoff: xris: I have narrowed it down to a line in includes/init.php

[07:58:00] ShockValue: i see no errors in the mythbackendlog or mythfrontendlog .. i dun understand why swapping out a drive would cause this
[07:58:00] ShockValue: so.. i changed my "buffers" drive to a different path, and it still just gives me a black screen
[07:59:00] ShockValue: so.. i re-installed mythtv.. no change

[08:10:00] ** SlicerDicer- ducks **
[08:10:00] hari_seldon99: my present pvr box is a compaq deskpro 800 MHz w hauppauge pvr350
[08:10:00] ShockValue: SlicerDicer- i did a chmod -R 777 on that drive. i can create files and directories and delete them as my mythtv user
[08:10:00] hari_seldon99: watching off of the tv-out
[08:10:00] hari_seldon99: I've been thinking abt adding a pvr150
[08:10:00] hari_seldon99: so that I can watch & record at the same time
[08:10:00] hari_seldon99: Right now, pic & sound is piped thru the ivtv driver & tv-out
[08:11:00] SlicerDicer-: hmm ShockValue I dont know :/ I figure if you can watch video off of /dev/video0 then its got to be something with the mythtv-setup buut I am no expert
[08:11:00] hari_seldon99: I saw in the manuals that the pvr150MCE has no audio-out, only audio-in
[08:11:00] ShockValue: SlicerDicer-i would agree, but i've changed nothing :(
[08:11:00] hari_seldon99: how do I get sound off of my pvr150 when it's in use
[08:11:00] hari_seldon99: ?
[08:11:00] SlicerDicer-: hari_seldon99, I can watch and record at the same time with my pvr350 without issue
[08:11:00] hari_seldon99: oh? how?
[08:11:00] SlicerDicer-: using the hardware decoder
[08:12:00] hari_seldon99: Whenevr I try mythtv says "all inputs are used for recording"

[08:12:00] hari_seldon99: yes
[08:12:00] hari_seldon99: I configged it in mythtv's setup
[08:12:00] SlicerDicer-: ohh that... I thought you were talking about watching things that were recording :)
[08:12:00] SlicerDicer-: thats why I have 2 cableboxes hehe
[08:12:00] hari_seldon99: no, watching a program while recording another
[08:12:00] hari_seldon99: like tivo
[08:12:00] SlicerDicer-: yeah I switch inputs
[08:13:00] SlicerDicer-: yeah hari_seldon99 it would require getting another card
[08:13:00] hari_seldon99: I was thinking abt the pvr150 mce
[08:13:00] SlicerDicer-: IIRC anyway mchou may be able to shed some light on that

[08:14:00] SlicerDicer-: haha
[08:15:00] hari_seldon99: so I'm getting both audio & video off of my present pvr350. But the pvr150 has no tv-out, right?
[08:15:00] xris: well, so much for our webserver.
[08:16:00] hari_seldon99: so I'll have to pipe the audio thru the soundcard of the box
[08:16:00] hari_seldon99: but I saw no "line out" in the pvr150MCE manual
[08:17:00] mchou: hari_seldon99: you dont need line out on 150
[08:17:00] hari_seldon99: oh
[08:17:00] hari_seldon99: so how do I get sound?
[08:17:00] hari_seldon99: thru the composite audios?
[08:17:00] mchou: just like how you dont need line out playing back mpeg movie previews
[08:18:00] mchou: the sound is encoded in the recording (in the mpeg file)
[08:18:00] hari_seldon99: ok
[08:19:00] hari_seldon99: so, apart from connecting the coax cable thru a splitter (on wire to the 150, other to the 350) I dont have to do any more wiring?

[14:41:00] Juski: good afternoon
[14:41:00] laga: hello Juski
[14:42:00] Juski: Hi laga. still can't get mythmusic to emerge. I think my install is borked
[14:42:00] Juski: leaving that for now.. gonna try out the cx88-blackbird driver today
[14:42:00] Juski: how's it going at your side of things?
[14:43:00] laga: very lazy. currently upgrading mythwiki.de to the latest mediawiki ;)
[14:44:00] Juski: I found out last night why the coax feed I put in for the dbox didn't work
[14:44:00] laga: the blackbird driver? that was the driver for some pvr 250s, right?
[14:44:00] Juski: yep laga.. that's the one.. only I've got a leadtek lr6632 (PVR2000OEM)
[14:44:00] Juski: I figure I might be able to help them – if only in terms of testing
[14:45:00] Juski: but of course if it just works ;)
[14:45:00] laga: hehe, nice
[14:46:00] laga: well, the plutohome guys have a special version of this driver, i believe they called it "compatibility layer" for ivtv
[14:46:00] Juski: I compared the sources.. they look pretty much the same
[14:46:00] Juski: cx88-blackbird now has comments saying it has parts of ivtv in it
[14:46:00] laga: oh, ok. well, good luck woith it then ;)
[14:47:00] Juski: yeh – god I must have been bored the day I looked into that
[14:47:00] laga: hehe, yep ;)
[14:47:00] ** Juski makes note to self.. get life! **
[14:48:00] laga: i upgraded mediawiki from 1.4.6 to 1.4.11, but it says it's version 1.4.10. argh.

[14:50:00] Juski: and I read driver source code :/
[14:50:00] laga: great way to annoy the wife: print it and read while having breakfast
[14:51:00] Juski: heheh
[14:51:00] Juski: that'd work.. if my wife ever had breakfast
[14:52:00] Juski: eh? I've got no /dev/video0
[14:52:00] Juski: but I've had mythtv working with a dvb tuner already in this machine
[14:53:00] laga: dvb tuners dont give you /dev/video0
[14:53:00] Juski: ahh
[14:56:00] Juski: I need to pass the cx88-blackbird some config info to tell it which card I have.. how do I do that? never played with analogue cards before

[14:56:00] Juski: thanks laga

[20:37:00] _Nero_: I would say stick with 4 for now..
[20:37:00] _Nero_: 5, from what I have read, is just introducing much more in terms of features (linked searches, etc..).. stuff that myth isn't taking advantage of.. not worth the risk.
[20:38:00] _Nero_: and unless you are writing something that will take advantage, no need to upgrade at this point.
