[00:07:00] rama: SplasPood, it sounds very much to me.. I should remember
[00:07:00] rama: sarge or sid?
[00:08:00] SplasPood: sid
[00:08:00] SplasPood: assuming unstable still maps to that..
[00:09:00] SplasPood: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
[00:09:00] SplasPood: mythvideo: Depends: libqt3c102-mt (>= 3:3.3.4) but it is not installable
[00:09:00] SplasPood: E: Broken packages
[00:11:00] Ryushin: I'm running sid and I'm not having any problems.

[00:12:00] Ryushin: You probably want to install libqt3-mt
[00:13:00] SplasPood: it is installed, problem is the mythtv debs depend on the old name..
[00:14:00] Ryushin: Oh, are you trying to install the deb packages?

[00:16:00] rama: SplasPood, did you do an dist-upgrade lately?
[00:17:00] Ryushin: I recompiled the sdebs to make everything happy. Make sure you do a apt-get build-dep mythtv to make sure you have all the packages you'll need to compile.
[00:17:00] rage__: is there a way to tune to channels that don't have video to them like? like music tv channels? whenever I try to tune to a channel without a video track it says the channel is off-air
[00:17:00] SplasPood: yep... Been waiting for them to fix it, so I've been updating quite often (just a min ago)
[00:17:00] rama: i don't remember quite well about sid, as I opted to setup mythtv on a Sarge, so I had different problems and had to make the .deb packages myself
[00:17:00] rama: jeje
[00:17:00] Ryushin: I had problems with the deb packages as well. You'll need to recompile.
[00:18:00] SplasPood: build-dep doesn't wanna work
[00:18:00] SplasPood: it worked fine till I did a recent dist-upgrade
[00:18:00] Ryushin: Because of a couple of bugs in 18.1, I've now gone to svn. At least trying to.
[00:18:00] SplasPood: about.. a week or 1.5 weeks ago
[00:19:00] Ryushin: I don't know if I can help you there. But compilings the deb packages is what you're going to need to do.
[00:19:00] SplasPood: I think there was some way to create a dummy package which provided libqt3c102-mt but was actually a pointer to libqt3-mt
[00:20:00] rama: SplasPood, yep, I never did that, but guess should work
[00:20:00] SplasPood: any idea how? :)
[00:21:00] rama: i was apt-cache searching, but nothing yet
[00:21:00] rama: googling?

[05:47:00] briand: so, what sort of mythtv setup do you have there?
[05:47:00] PaulWay: I also learnt a valuable lesson pretty early – don't enable all the development, testing and bleeding-edge repositories unless you really want to live on the bleeding edge.
[05:47:00] PaulWay: One combined backend/frontend in an Antec case in the living room, with two DVB cards.
[05:47:00] briand: I've got a Pundit-R with FC3 running MythTV 0.18.1 with a PVR-350. Installing a PVR-500MCE next week to triple my inputs

[05:48:00] briand: cool

[05:48:00] PaulWay: I knew there was a reason for getting the 21" screen...
[05:49:00] briand: I've found that building my MythTV box has easily quadrupled the amount of TV I watch.
[05:49:00] GreyFoxx: It's very convienient having everything available whenever you feel like it :)
[05:49:00] PaulWay: Hmmm – atrpms is out of mirrors? What is this insolence?
[05:49:00] PaulWay: True.
[05:49:00] briand: because now, there's no reason why I *can't* watch that program that runs at 3:00am!
[05:49:00] PaulWay: I think the next purchase will be another 250GB drive.
[05:49:00] PaulWay: briand: exactly!
[05:50:00] briand: heh.
[05:50:00] PaulWay: I find I have conversations where I say "I watched this show the other night" and they say "dude, that was on three weeks ago"
[05:50:00] GreyFoxx: I should get rid of some frontends and make it less convienient. I watch too much tv hehe
[05:50:00] PaulWay: And I say "Yeah, but I didn't have to worry about the VCR borking out, or be home at a certain time to watch it..."
[05:50:00] briand: so much so, in fact, that I felt it necessary to upgrade the system by installing a PVR-500MCE. Apparently, there's television I'd like to watch that runs simultaneously with other programs I'd like to watch.
[05:51:00] PaulWay: I use nuvexport heavily as well; mostly for archiving Dr Who but also for storing things that I can watch later.
[05:51:00] GreyFoxx: Mmmmm Dr Who
[05:51:00] PaulWay: I _really_ need to learn how to use Myth's inbuilt compression processing and that.
[05:51:00] briand: I have yet to run nuvexport, or do any sort of transcoding and/or dvd-burning
[05:51:00] briand: i'm on a record-watch-delete cycle, for the most part.
[05:52:00] briand: ..and i've got some room to play: I have a 300GB drive in the Pundit.
[05:52:00] PaulWay: We bought the MythTV machine so we could avoid having to write DVDs or tapes.
[05:52:00] briand: so, until i start getting 100+ hours behind in watching what i've recorded, I'm okay. :)
[05:52:00] PaulWay: Kate (my partner) does the same thing, briand.

[05:53:00] PaulWay: My big problem at the moment is that I added my old 160GB drive hastily.
[05:53:00] PaulWay: Now I have /opt/video on one partition and /opt/store on another, and I really should use a volume group to spread /opt across both.
[05:53:00] PaulWay: Of course, I have to find the spare space to put it all while I rebuild it,
[05:54:00] briand: well, if (okay, when!) I need more drivespace, I'll have to add a drive (or three) on the network and use NFS from the Myth box to access it. No more physical space in the Pundit for another drive.
[05:54:00] PaulWay: because AFAIK there's no way to convert a partition into LVM without recreating it entirely.
[05:55:00] briand: another trick I've heard used: set up a post-processing script to move the .nuv files to storage space elsewhere on the network, and create a link in the /video directory for it.
[05:55:00] GreyFoxx: One of these days I'll have to look at lvm
[05:56:00] PaulWay: briand: moving nuv files sounds like a pretty crufty hack.
[05:56:00] briand: crufty?
[05:57:00] PaulWay: dodgy; liable to fall apart; badly thought out.

[06:07:00] briand: (i'm ssh'd into the mythbox)

[06:24:00] PaulWay: It can slow you down to 3MBytes/sec on slow machines... ;-)
[06:25:00] briand: heh
[06:25:00] briand: well, i'm not going to be transferring HUGE files, anyway
[06:25:00] PaulWay: briand: helping users help themselves since 11:42pm local time.
[06:25:00] PaulWay: :-)
[06:25:00] briand: just, for instance, the new ivtv drivers, when 0.4.0 comes out tomorrow.
[06:26:00] defaultro: briand, http://www.icrew.org/mirror/ssh/SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe
[06:26:00] briand: is that a linux executable?
[06:26:00] defaultro: HUH!
[06:26:00] defaultro: lol
[06:26:00] defaultro: man, you must be really behind
[06:26:00] defaultro: the extensions tells it
[06:27:00] briand: it was a joke.  :)
[06:27:00] PaulWay: Don't worry about those .exe's – if you've got ssh on linux, you've got scp.
[06:27:00] defaultro: cmon
[06:27:00] defaultro: :)

[06:27:00] defaultro: yeah, if you're comfortable with command line, just use scp
[06:27:00] defaultro: parameter is really easy
[06:27:00] briand: i have a winXP machine, but I don't use it for much else than email and doing the nyt crossword puzzle
[06:27:00] cosmo_: anyone know if winmyth supports automatic comercial skip?
[06:27:00] defaultro: but you said, you want to transfer something to the linux box right?
[06:27:00] briand: comfy enough. cut my eye teeth on pc-dos 3.1
[06:28:00] defaultro: what is the o.s. of the client machine?
[06:28:00] PaulWay: If you're using NFS, you can also copy to/from /net/machinename/NFS-path/ on your local machine and it will create NFS links on the fly.
[06:28:00] briand: yes, but from *this* linux box to *that* linux box.
[06:28:00] defaultro: ah
[06:28:00] defaultro: so just use scp
[06:28:00] briand: gotcha.
[06:28:00] PaulWay: It does save all that messy mucking about with FTP... :-)
[06:28:00] defaultro: scp sourcefile briand@192.168.1.10:
[06:29:00] briand: scp sourcefile root@mythtv:/root
[06:29:00] defaultro: yeah
[06:29:00] PaulWay: If your username is the same on the remote machine, you can simply do scp sourcefile mythtv:
[06:29:00] PaulWay: And then you get into rsync...
[06:29:00] briand: i don't remember if i set up a user account on the myth box.
[06:29:00] briand: i think it has only mythtv and root as users
[06:29:00] defaultro: or scp root@192.168.1.1:/sourcedir/thisfile newfilename
[06:29:00] briand: well, plus the 'nobody' user for apache
[06:30:00] PaulWay: And then you get to ssh certificates, and you don't even have to put in a password to copy the file.
[06:31:00] dkowis: pki!
[06:31:00] briand: pki?
[06:31:00] PaulWay: public key (infrastructure?)
[06:31:00] dkowis: yeah
[06:32:00] PaulWay: Hmmm – visitors coming soon – better go.
[06:32:00] dkowis: that'd be giving your public ssh key somewhere but keeping your private key
[06:32:00] briand: visitors? this time of night?
[06:32:00] PaulWay: In Australia it's 2:32PM :-)
[06:32:00] dkowis: also if you had an authority that verified that your public key is yours
[06:32:00] dkowis: but meh
[06:32:00] briand: PaulWay: thanks much for the help.

[06:39:00] jkhii is now known as jkh2
[06:40:00] briand: hmm.. that, i don't know. don't have HDTV here... and have yet to do -any- transcoding (although, it's on the list. ;)
[06:40:00] defaultro: :)
[06:40:00] jtwang: yeah, it took me forever to get HDTV working, but now it works. except that it takes 6G an hour :)
[06:40:00] briand: ouch.
[06:41:00] briand: defaultro: i'm not seeing your dns question in the scrollback buffer here..
[06:41:00] fryfrog: did svn mythtv recently do away with the "--host=" option?
[06:43:00] defaultro: briand, don't worry about my dns question
[06:44:00] defaultro: hi fryfrog
[06:44:00] defaultro: i was just gonna ask if there are issues if my dns server has a private ip address but serves public ip address from its data file

[06:49:00] jtwang: but in general, no, I don't think you'll have any problems
[06:49:00] jtwang: that's how a typical caching DNS server works anyways – it has a private IP and serves up IPs for hosts on the internet at large
[06:50:00] CyberKnet: out of curiosity, Anyone familiar with 3ware raid cards?
[06:50:00] fryfrog: i've drooled about them, does that count? :)
[06:52:00] CyberKnet: heh
[06:52:00] CyberKnet: I drooled over them till last week
[06:52:00] CyberKnet: just installed it today

[06:53:00] DarkBeer: don't remember the model off hand
[06:53:00] CyberKnet: configured the array in the bios (mirroring)
[06:53:00] DarkBeer: yeah, was pretty painless setup
[06:53:00] CyberKnet: now trying to find the block device. trying to figure out if I need to use the cli or 3dm2 for anything before it shows up
[06:54:00] CyberKnet: using the kernel driver
[06:54:00] defaultro: how much are 3ware cards?
[06:54:00] fryfrog: like $300–600?
[06:54:00] fryfrog: the good ones at least
[06:54:00] defaultro: ouch
[06:54:00] fryfrog: CyberKnet: did your kernel detect everyting okay in dmesg?
[06:55:00] defaultro: actually, i have a p3 here that has a scsi built-in. Can I use that as a backend server?
[06:55:00] fryfrog: i've not used a 3ware, but I had a megaraid scsi card.
[06:55:00] fryfrog: defaultro: sure, why not?
[06:55:00] defaultro: cool
[06:55:00] CyberKnet: hmm
[06:55:00] fryfrog: i'd skip the scsi part though :)
[06:55:00] CyberKnet: I think it did.
[06:55:00] defaultro: i won't use it as a frontend
[06:55:00] fryfrog: hard to find big cheap scsi hds
[06:55:00] defaultro: with that, i can easily grow my storage
[06:55:00] CyberKnet: didnt see any errors.
[06:55:00] defaultro: ah, that's the problem
[06:55:00] CyberKnet: but didn't see any drive detected.
[06:56:00] fryfrog: then it should have told you the drives it found
[06:56:00] fryfrog: at least, thats what mine did
[06:56:00] defaultro: the 3ware cards, does it use IDE drives?
[06:56:00] fryfrog: can you post the dmesg for the 3ware card at pastebin.com?
[06:56:00] fryfrog: IDE, SCSI or SATA depending on what you buy
[06:56:00] CyberKnet: defaultro: mine uses sata drives
[06:56:00] defaultro: ok
[06:56:00] DarkBeer: mine has ide
[06:56:00] defaultro: and how many can it accomodate/
[06:56:00] fryfrog: 2,4,8,12

[06:57:00] CyberKnet: escalade 9500s-4LP

[07:01:00] defaultro: how come you got 1.2 if raid 5
[07:02:00] CyberKnet: you always pay more for the latest
[07:02:00] defaultro: raid 5 uses parity
[07:02:00] defaultro: oh, 1 parity only right?
[07:03:00] defaultro: i've been lucky so far with western digital
[07:03:00] patdk2: I have had alot of wd fail
[07:03:00] patdk2: count up to around 9 or so
[07:03:00] defaultro: ouch

[07:04:00] patdk2: ya, use their util to check out the hardware for 3ware
[07:04:00] patdk2: the util works pretty good
[07:04:00] patdk2: almost as good as the newer adaptec raid scsi card ones
[07:04:00] defaultro: hey guys, i have never installed a remote frontend. How do I do it?
[07:06:00] CyberKnet: the command line util, or the web config util
[07:07:00] patdk2: command line
[07:09:00] CyberKnet: hmm... no controller found
[07:09:00] patdk2: you using the right one?
[07:09:00] CyberKnet: tw_cli for the 95xx series.
[07:10:00] patdk2: hmm, I have a 75xx series
[07:10:00] patdk2: worked fine
[07:10:00] patdk2: once I found the 2.6.x version of it
[07:13:00] CyberKnet: might have to download the source to the driver and compile it instead of using the driver that came with my kernel
[07:15:00] patdk2: maybe
[07:15:00] CyberKnet: might check which driver kudzu loaded too
[07:16:00] CyberKnet: make sure it got the 9500 driver
[07:16:00] CyberKnet: and not the xxxx driver
[07:16:00] CyberKnet: hmm... xxxx driver
[07:16:00] CyberKnet: that would be a problem
[07:18:00] CyberKnet: aah. much better.
[07:19:00] patdk2: hmm, I don't think 36g drives will do me
[07:20:00] patdk2: heh, that would leave me 3gigs free with my current usage
[07:20:00] CyberKnet: heh
[07:20:00] CyberKnet: I'm just mirroring a 250gb sata
[07:20:00] CyberKnet: looks like it put hte array on sdc
[07:20:00] CyberKnet: s/array/mirror
[07:20:00] CyberKnet: or whatever the terminology is
[07:21:00] patdk2: heh, I have two raid5 of 4x200, a raid10 of 6 36g 15krpm, raid50 of 6 146g 15krpm
[07:21:00] patdk2: need a new db and email server
[07:21:00] patdk2: but that uses 33g for the db + software
[07:21:00] patdk2: I have 3 36g 15k drives not being used
[07:22:00] CyberKnet: can I just use fdisk on the new block device sdc, or do I need to use tw_cli to create the partition table?
[07:22:00] patdk2: tw_cli doesn't make partitions
[07:22:00] patdk2: it just joins drives
[07:22:00] patdk2: use fdisk on sdc
[07:22:00] CyberKnet: it just performs functions that you can do in the card bios then?
[07:23:00] patdk2: cyberknet, yes, and more
[07:23:00] patdk2: it lets you do maintance also
[07:23:00] CyberKnet: neat.
[07:23:00] patdk2: verify the drives

[07:24:00] patdk2: well, 3ware does I believe
[07:25:00] patdk2: I find smart with ide drives to suck
[07:25:00] patdk2: smart with scsi drives are actually alittle usefull
[07:25:00] CyberKnet: heh
[07:25:00] patdk2: heh, really nice that almost all drives now have temp sensors in them
[07:25:00] CyberKnet: yeah
[07:26:00] patdk2: guess I need to price out some 73g 15k drives
[07:26:00] CyberKnet: libata not supporting smart kinda sucks.. most sata drives do have that capability.
[07:27:00] CyberKnet: do the 3ware cards have any led connectors to indicate failed/failing drives, or will I need to hook up a parport/serial project driven by tw_cli output?
[07:27:00] defaultro: hey guys, how do we find out what subnets where given to a company? Is it ARIN?
[07:28:00] patdk2: cyberknet, I don't beleive so

[07:29:00] CyberKnet: some compaq gear shows it, but it's pretty expensive.
[07:29:00] patdk2: ya, that is all ses enabled
[07:29:00] patdk2: scsi backplanes
[07:29:00] patdk2: all my raid arrays do it except the two raid5 3ware ones
[07:29:00] CyberKnet: I really don't want to spend the kind of money that takes =)
[07:29:00] patdk2: heh
[07:30:00] CyberKnet: a nice serial port or parallel port project sounds fun though.
[07:30:00] CyberKnet: heh

[07:30:00] ** CyberKnet is very, very cheap **

[09:19:00] Cardoe: afaik
[09:19:00] Cardoe: they're just the bundled themes
[09:19:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: if you want to be more productive with the SVN ebuilds
[09:20:00] Cardoe: something that in the past I would actually support
[09:20:00] Cardoe: and include in Portage
[09:20:00] Cardoe: it's SVN Snapshots
[09:24:00] Cardoe: if you'd want to work with me on those.
[09:24:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: how often do you recompile?
[09:26:00] fryfrog: hey!
[09:26:00] fryfrog: there is a themes svn trunk
[09:26:00] fryfrog: svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/myththemes
[09:26:00] fryfrog: it has the cool WS themes
[09:27:00] fryfrog: i just re-did the mythtv-svn ebuild so that it actually works
[09:27:00] fryfrog: and added a ton of ?new? use flags
[09:28:00] fryfrog: i also fixed some deps, like the built in dvd nav and ieee1394 suport
[09:28:00] fryfrog: i'm compiling now, and i need to test some use vs. what ./configure does cases
[09:28:00] fryfrog: i think they have a "stable" 0.18.2 svn branch, might make a good portage snapshot
[09:39:00] splAt1 is now known as splat1
[09:40:00] rage__: I'm trying out a recent SVN and I can't play my old recorded shows, but can record new ones and play those fine
[09:40:00] rage__: anyone else have this problem?
[09:40:00] rage__: they do have a stable 18.2 btw, I downloaded it a while ago :)
[09:41:00] Cardoe: rage__: not a tarball though
[09:41:00] fryfrog: yeah, just a stable svn branch
[09:41:00] rage__: no, but you can svn it
[09:42:00] rage__: you guys know anything about my video playing problems?
[09:42:00] rage__: :\
[09:42:00] fryfrog: http://fryfrog.com/mythtv-svn-0.18.ebuild
[09:42:00] fryfrog: would you take a peak at that ebuild cardoe and tell me what you think?
[09:42:00] Cardoe: I strongly dislike SVN ebuilds?
[09:43:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: how often do you really compile?
[09:43:00] fryfrog: I added dependency support for dvd and ieee1394
[09:43:00] fryfrog: every few days or weeks?
[09:43:00] fryfrog: cause i'm a sloot :)
[09:43:00] Cardoe: I would do a near weekly snapshot
[09:43:00] Cardoe: in the tree
[09:43:00] fryfrog: most of my changes were to the dependancy and use flags, not the svn portion
[09:43:00] Cardoe: if you'd be willing to help
[09:43:00] Cardoe: test
[09:43:00] fryfrog: of the 0.18.2 stable branch?
[09:44:00] fryfrog: i could try, but most of my free time is in the middle of the night while at work
[09:44:00] fryfrog: so all i can really test is if the backend runs and it compiled
[09:44:00] rage__: where do you work fryfrog?
[09:44:00] Cardoe: No
[09:44:00] Cardoe: not of 0.18.2
[09:44:00] Cardoe: there is no 0.18.2
[09:44:00] fryfrog: mirant, an energy company
[09:45:00] fryfrog: svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/branches/release-0-18-fixes/mythtv
[09:45:00] fryfrog: If you'd like to get the stable 0.18.2 branch, do this instead:
[09:45:00] Cardoe: It's a stable branch
[09:45:00] fryfrog: ah, sorry thats what i meant
[09:45:00] Cardoe: I don't care what the wiki page calls it
[09:45:00] Cardoe: it's not 0.18.2
[09:45:00] fryfrog: does it get updated regularly?
[09:45:00] ** Cardoe shrugs. **
[09:45:00] Cardoe: I don't use it
[09:45:00] fryfrog: ah
[09:46:00] Cardoe: you two are the ones that started talking about it.
[09:46:00] Cardoe: I was talking about what's going to become 0.19
[09:46:00] fryfrog: so what would be required for a mythtv-2005blahblah
[09:46:00] fryfrog: ebuild
[09:46:00] fryfrog: some ebuilds that work on the tar.bz2 files and some testing?
[09:46:00] Cardoe: I already make them for myself locally.
[09:46:00] Cardoe: as far as ieee1394
[09:47:00] Cardoe: I don't see why you removed some depends but ok
[09:47:00] fryfrog: i didn't remove any
[09:47:00] fryfrog: i added them
[09:47:00] rage__: also with this svn that I'm using, I only get a partial lock on channels that I could lock onto and watch before
[09:47:00] rage__: goofy
[09:48:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: well then they're wrong
[09:48:00] Cardoe: fryfrog: they've been in the official Portage ebuilds for months
[09:48:00] fryfrog: what are wrong?
[09:48:00] Cardoe: what's profile?
[09:48:00] fryfrog: the one about that libiec63blahblah?
[09:48:00] Cardoe: there's more parts to it
[09:49:00] fryfrog: i don't follow
[09:49:00] fryfrog: ieee1394 requires libraw and libiec
[09:49:00] fryfrog: but libiec requires libraw anyway
[09:49:00] fryfrog: so i just changed the libraw requirement to libiec
[09:50:00] Cardoe: ok
[09:51:00] Cardoe: how about libavc?
[09:51:00] fryfrog: what is it for?
[09:51:00] ** Cardoe shrugs. **
[09:51:00] Cardoe: it's what was needed for me and a couple of others to compile
[09:51:00] fryfrog: ah
[09:52:00] fryfrog: how do you do twin requirements?
[09:52:00] fryfrog: ieee1394? ( media-libs/libiec61883 media-libs/libavc )
[09:52:00] fryfrog: ?
[09:55:00] fryfrog: there, i added avc

[20:01:00] jcohen85: i followed the instructions on http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-13.html to create a password for mythtv but i'm not being asked for a password. I restarted apache after making the change. What am i missing? I'm running on Debian with apache 2.0.54
[20:01:00] GreyFoxx: balkj: In order for him to help you, you must help him by answering what he asks. After all you are the one at the computer in question
[20:02:00] balkj: what he asked??? he asked could i see it in mythvideo i asked him how to get there and his response not what i asked
[20:02:00] xris: balkj: NO, that's not what I asked.
[20:02:00] balkj: is the file on your hard drive?
[20:02:00] balkj: [10:58am] <balkj> yes i imported the whole dvd
[20:02:00] balkj: [10:58am] <+xris> not what I asked
[20:03:00] xris: is there a file on your drive in the directory you configured mythvideo to search for videos?
[20:03:00] xris: not "is there a file in mythvideo"
[20:03:00] xris: I'm first trying to see if the export even WORKED
[20:03:00] xris: good practice in debugging, start from the beginning.
[20:03:00] balkj: i didnt configure myth for a video folder
[20:03:00] xris: balkj: then it uses the defaults.
[20:03:00] balkj: ok
[20:04:00] xris: which you should look at to make sure that the video even exported.
[20:04:00] balkj: ok
[20:04:00] xris: then make sure that the export directory and the mythvideo directories are even related.
[20:05:00] balkj: ok how do i do that, i can go to media libary watch video and see the folder of the dvd i imported
[20:06:00] xris: balkj: look on your hard drive, outside of mythtv
[20:06:00] xris: make sure there is actually something IN the folder
[20:07:00] balkj: ok can we start over and try to get my tv working, i guess thats the main thing i want
[20:07:00] agile: trying to setup for the first time, and when I try to start the backend it fails trying to connect the db. I can connect fine using the same user/pw that are in /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt, so I'm wondering where it might be pulling whatever password it's trying to use from?
[20:08:00] xris: agile: probably a stray mysql.txt file somewhere
[20:08:00] xris: sometimes in /.mythtv or ~/.mythtv or /usr/local/share/mythtv/
[20:08:00] xris: balkj: take your pick... either way, I need to go do family stuff...
[20:09:00] balkj: well do you have a few min before you need to leave?

[20:19:00] PatrickDK: just tv
[20:19:00] PatrickDK: I didn't know there was a tv within myth
[20:20:00] PatrickDK: livetv?
[20:20:00] balkj: you know where you can record tv in myth
[20:20:00] balkj: i cant see tv in myth

[20:20:00] xris: balkj: what card do you have?
[20:20:00] balkj: ati tv wonder ve

[20:21:00] balkj: ? have no idea
[20:21:00] xris: test?
[20:21:00] balkj: how do i test? im really new at myth just got it installed this morning
[20:22:00] xris: has nothing to do with myth
[20:22:00] xris: xawtv is a basic tv-viewing program for software-encoder cards.
[20:22:00] xris: need to make sure that your card is configured properly
[20:23:00] balkj: so do i need to boot into windows or stay in myth
[20:23:00] xris: stay in linux, but get out of myth
[20:23:00] balkj: ok
[20:23:00] balkj: ok whats next
[20:24:00] xris: so are you new to myth, or new to both myth AND linux?
[20:24:00] balkj: kinda know linux
[20:24:00] xris: ok. run xawtv
[20:25:00] xris: (I usually prefer to do such things from a terminal, but you could also just use the window manager's "run" function — alt-f2 in gnome, dunno what in kde, etc)
[20:26:00] balkj: hang one its in ntsc europe
[20:26:00] xris: right-click should give you a menu if there isn't one on screen already
[20:28:00] balkj: i change it but when i restart it but it stays in europe west

[20:36:00] PatrickDK: otherwise, well, they both work
[20:36:00] _Steve_: cool, thanks
[20:36:00] PatrickDK: and mythtv can play non-mpeg files
[20:37:00] PatrickDK: I use dvarchive, and host my shows to both replaytv and mythtv
[20:37:00] _Steve_: i'm wondering in particular about commercial advance and sharing between multiple units / internet sharing
[20:37:00] PatrickDK: intnernet sharing?
[20:37:00] PatrickDK: I'm pretty sure that is illegal
[20:38:00] _Steve_: the replay i have has that feature
[20:38:00] PatrickDK: ya, but still illegal
[20:38:00] _Steve_: anyway, i don't use it, i'm just wondering
[20:38:00] PatrickDK: that is why it was taken off the market
[20:38:00] balkj: <PatrickDK> I'm pretty sure that is illegal<------hahahah
[20:38:00] PatrickDK: sharing over the internet is a pain anyways
[20:38:00] _Steve_: replaytv is still on the market
[20:38:00] PatrickDK: steve the 5000 series?
[20:39:00] PatrickDK: I;m pretty sure only the 5500 are made for the last two years
[20:39:00] _Steve_: does mythtv make it pretty easy to move shows around to/from it?
[20:39:00] PatrickDK: no
[20:39:00] PatrickDK: you can use dvarchive to transfer to the myttv computer, and dmp the mpeg into the mythtv video dir
[20:39:00] PatrickDK: but anything beyond that takes db adjustments
[20:40:00] _Steve_: what about transfering from mythtv?
[20:40:00] PatrickDK: only if it's in mpeg2
[20:41:00] PatrickDK: and you run rtvconvert
[20:41:00] PatrickDK: and host it with dvarchive
[20:41:00] _Steve_: you have to run rtvconvert with mythtv?
[20:41:00] PatrickDK: and if you want to transfer the name/metainfo for the program, that takes db access
[20:42:00] PatrickDK: dvarchive and mythtv at same time
[20:42:00] PatrickDK: to do that
[20:42:00]
[20:42:00] _Steve_: ok, i should clarify my question
[20:42:00] PatrickDK: steve, if you asking this many questions, no, you won't be able to
[20:42:00] _Steve_: i'm thinking of getting rid of the replaytv altogether and just using mythtv
[20:43:00] PatrickDK: than use mythtv
[20:43:00] PatrickDK: unless you want to save your replaytv shows
[20:43:00] _Steve_: my question is if i'll have the same features on mythtv as i have on the replay
[20:43:00] PatrickDK: steve, basically yes

[21:30:00] drb: no help?
[21:30:00] bryce_: well, for him it turned out to be a BIOS setting for RAID/SATA type, but I have no such settings in my bios
[21:30:00] bryce_: read it and see if it gives you an idea
[21:31:00] drb: that all sounds like LILO/BIOS issues.
[21:31:00] drb: your kernel actually loads and opens the initrd
[21:31:00] bryce_: drb, I'm actually wondering if maybe gentoo has the best mythtv support... I'm pondering scrapping knoppmyth and just building gentoo on my second drive
[21:32:00] pembo13: sphing: i get "connection refused
[21:32:00] drb: another option is to try a kernel with ata, scsi disk, ext3, all built-in instead of with modules

[21:32:00] drb: I'm making my way through the plugins now, lirc settings, etc
[21:32:00] drb: I can't figure out how to make the fonts bigger though.
[21:33:00] drb: the guide and video list fonts are waaaay too small for my tv
[21:34:00] drb: also... mythtv needs sound like the tivo, since it's not very quick to react visually to commands
[21:34:00] bryce_: yeah
[21:35:00] bryce_: yeah I'm just wondering if part of my trouble is that I'm having to learn knopp on top of myth, which is doubling the usual amount of troubles ;-)
[21:36:00] bryce_: do you think that maybe I need some different SATA drivers or something?
[21:36:00] drb: I don't think the problem is the SATA.
[21:36:00] drb: I think the problem is entirely kernel/initrd issues
[21:37:00] drb: Try building all the SCSI, SATA, and ext3 stuff into a kernel and booting without initrd
[21:37:00] bryce_: hmm, I think I already have that
[21:37:00] drb: ugh
[21:37:00] bryce_: yeah all three of those are compiled in
[21:37:00] bryce_: should I try booting without the initrd line?
[21:38:00] Juski: mythtv not very quick to respond? works okay on my Via EPIA10k system... sometimes too damn quick
[21:38:00] bryce_: also, there's a depricated SATA driver (conflicts with libata) option... maybe I could try adding that?
[21:39:00] drb: if sata and scsi disk are compiled in, boot without the initrd
[21:40:00] drb: Juski: I'm working with a 1.2G celery, so it can sometimes be a little sluggish to walk through the menus
[21:40:00] drb: right now, playing back a transcoded avi with a recording running, CPU is at about 49%, which is good.

[21:43:00] bryce_: hmm, still panicked
[21:44:00] drb: did you see SATA initialization?
[21:44:00] bryce_: I'm seeing some errors during bootup about irq 18 (the cdrom)

[21:46:00] drb: the panic is "can't mount root device" right?
[21:46:00] drb: you could just turn off all the MD stuff if you want
[21:46:00] bryce_: knoppmyth kernel panic – not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root SATA
[21:46:00] drb: it actually says "SATA" at the end? that's odd.
[21:47:00] sphing: very odd
[21:47:00] bryce_: sorry, no
[21:47:00] bryce_: that was my search terms... actually it says something about device(8,1)
[21:47:00] drb: boot the working knoppmyth and find the SATA init in dmesg after you're up. Then make sure that shows up during your new kernel's boot.
[21:47:00] drb: yeah

[22:01:00] bryce_: however there's a chunk of messages that just scroll by too fast so I'm only about 80% sure
[22:01:00] drb: sata should at least pause to init
[22:04:00] bryce_: hmm... I see one line from the scrolled off bits
[22:05:00] bryce_: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05
[22:05:00] bryce_: so maybe that fast scrolling stuff is the SCSI output
[22:05:00] drb: that's good. means the sata has initialized.
[22:05:00] bryce_: there is definitely a pause right before it scrolls, so maybe that's when sata is initting
[22:05:00] Icks (n=edolson3@71-12-17-232.dhcp.spbg.sc.charter.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[22:05:00] drb: if that line isn't followed by "sda: ...." stuff then the SCSI Disk stuff isn't compiled in yet.
[22:07:00] bryce_: it's followed by a line about the mouse, then the md/raid stuff
[22:08:00] bryce_: hmm, if I could suppress the output from the raid/md stuff I might see more of the messages

[22:14:00] bryce_: hmm this is interesting
[22:14:00] bryce_: in kernel config under SATA support there is a line for Intel PIIX/ICH SATA support, marked as compiled in
[22:15:00] bryce_: but in the description it specifies this enables support for ICH5 SATA
[22:15:00] bryce_: whereas in lshw this machine is using ICH6 SATA
[22:15:00] drb: but your boot-up already shows that it's finding the SATA bus, right?
[22:15:00] drb: so you know that's working.
[22:16:00] drb: is scsi disk support compiled in?
[22:17:00] bryce_: yeah
[22:17:00] drb: hmpf
[22:21:00] bryce_: hmm, in googling a bit on this error message, I notice several mentions from people who have two sda devices seeing this message
[22:27:00] sphing: bryce_: whats your exact problem
[22:28:00] bryce_: the default knoppmyth kernel boots and works ok
[22:28:00] KillerBunny (n=Killer@port149.ds1-arno.adsl.cybercity.dk) has joined #mythtv-users
[22:29:00] bryce_: however that version of the kernel does not have support for my audio card
[22:29:00] bryce_: thus I am attempting to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.13.3
[22:29:00] bryce_: I am using the same initial .config as from the working kernel (taken from /proc/config.gz)
[22:29:00] sphing: "upgrading" how
[22:30:00] bryce_: then run make menuconfig on that .config, and saving without making any changes)
[22:30:00] bryce_: recompile, install, update lilo, rerun mkinitrd, etc.
[22:30:00] bryce_: reboot, and then it panics with the following error message:
[22:30:00] bryce_: Kernel panic – not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknonw-block(8,1)
[22:31:00] sphing: bryce_: go back to kernel src for the new kernel
[22:31:00] bryce_: the hardware I'm installing on is an ASUS mb with Intel ICH6 chipset, two SATA maxtor drives, and two pvr250's
[22:31:00] sphing: and do a make mrproper
[22:31:00] sphing: then copy the .config back over
[22:31:00] sphing: and do make oldconfig
[22:32:00] bryce_: ok
[22:32:00] sphing: this is your frontend and backend
[22:33:00] bryce_: actually it will only be the backend
[22:33:00] bryce_: so in theory I probably don't need the soundcard
[22:33:00] sphing: i know but nothing bothers me more than when i ask for help and people say o forget it you dont need
[22:33:00] bryce_: however, we found that mythtv was not handling a no-audio card situation very well
[22:34:00] sphing: my backend has no soundcard
[22:35:00] splat1 is now known as splAt1
[22:38:00] Filip^ (n=Filip@sterrenbos.demon.nl) Quit ("Konversation terminated!")
[22:42:00] bryce_: why make oldconfig instead of make menuconfig?
[22:43:00] jonK: make oldconfig will take all of the old settings, and only pause on the new ones that are available for the old kernel
[22:44:00] jonK: you can do the same with menuconfig, but you won't know what's specifically new for the kernel upgrade
[22:44:00] jonK: *that are NOT availble for the old kernel
[22:45:00] rage-: I've had kernels fail using oldconfig
[22:46:00] rage-: I make oldconfig, make and they error on compile... I remove .config and make clean and menuconfig, and it works

[23:02:00] sphing: make the kernel
[23:02:00] sphing: without any changes
[23:02:00] sphing: and try to boot it
[23:02:00] bryce_: it's compiling now. make mrproper deleted all of the previously compiled stuff so it has to recompile everything
[23:03:00] sphing: yea... i should have warned... sorry about that
[23:03:00] bryce_: well I knew it would do that...  ;-)
[23:03:00] bryce_: I was just curious why in particular you thought this was needed though
[23:04:00] bryce_: just sanity check, or do you suspect something specific?
[23:04:00] sphing: i think when you made menuconfig

[23:18:00] redfox_away: cosmo_, it works really well for me
[23:18:00] sphing: some channels work better than others
[23:18:00] redfox_away: I usually check it before transcoding though
[23:19:00] bryce_: sphing, mkinitrd reports a warning regarding sd_mod
[23:19:00] bryce_: rebooting...
[23:19:00] sphing: why do you need an initrd?
[23:19:00] bryce_: yup, same error as before
[23:19:00] rage-: checking a 30 minute show and fine tuning only takes like 2 minutes before transcoding
[23:20:00] bryce_: sphing, knoppmyth comes configured to use initrd; in the theory of change as few things as possible I kept it
[23:20:00] sphing: rage-: whats your fine tuning?
[23:20:00] bryce_: I've also verified that the sata, ide, etc. stuff is compiled into the kernel and booted it without initrd, but same issue.
[23:20:00] sphing: whats the error message
[23:21:00] bryce_: Kernel panic – not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)

[23:22:00] rage-: sphing, and making sure the commercials are marked right
[23:22:00] rage-: had one the other day that was inverted (it started marking in the middle of a show, and stopped at the beginning of a commercial)
[23:24:00] sphing: how do you do that i'd like to fine tune mine
[23:25:00] rage-: go into edit mode, load in the auto-marked commercials, then move them around
[23:26:00] rage-: use the left/right arrows to move around, up/down to adjust how much you move at once, and enter to alter/create/delete marks
