[00:40:00] Ronnie: can anyone recommend a resolution/bitrate to use for transcoding... i'm aiming for decent quality, and about 600MB/hour
[00:43:00] xris: Ronnie: from within myth, or with nuvexport?
[00:44:00] Ronnie: i'd rather do it within myth... do the automatic transcode. I played around with it for a day without much success
[00:44:00] patdk2: ronnie, is that a real hour? or – commercials?
[00:45:00] Ronnie: real hour preferably
[00:45:00] mrec (n=revenger@p54B03C70.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) Quit (Success)
[00:45:00] Ronnie: seems that i download 90 minute movies that are decent quality, and are around 600–700 MB in avi/mpg form
[00:46:00] xris: Ronnie: most downloaded stuff is around 624x468 at 960kbps
[00:46:00] patdk2: heh, that is cause you take along time to do it, but you save quality
[00:46:00] xris: which is exactly what nuvexport defaults to
[00:46:00] patdk2: I personally do, 720x480 at 1500kbps + 192kbps audio
[00:46:00] Ronnie: i wouldn't mind the transcoding taking a while.... thats fine
[00:46:00] splat1 is now known as splAt1
[00:47:00] Ronnie: patdk2 how big is a half hour show file?
[00:47:00] xris: Ronnie: use nuvexport, send it to mythvideo, be happy... built-in stuff is nowhere near the quality that you can get with nuvexport (dunno why, since it's the same library with the same options)
[00:47:00] patdk2: well, two hours is 1.7gigs
[00:48:00] Ronnie: i'll check out nuvexport. thanks xris...
[00:50:00] DarkBeer: if I want to change the settings for live tv, would I do that under the default recording profile? want to see if I can address the slowness/jitter on things like football games
[00:51:00] Juski: DarkBeer – that'd be the need to deinterlace the video then
[00:52:00] DarkBeer: i thought deinterlace is supposed to be off on standard def tv
[00:52:00] DarkBeer: using a boring basic 27 inch tv

[01:30:00] D-side: maybe someone's seen the problem i'm having before. i've recently moved, and now i've got an entirely different cable provider. i've got the new channel data d/l'ed from datadirect (after using mythsetup to blow out the old config). the problem is, the channel names are incorrect.
[01:30:00] D-side: the channel number/name pairs match the old provider.
[01:32:00] D-side: i think i might shut the hell up now.
[01:32:00] D-side: all my yapping is likely for naught. ignore me.
[01:33:00] Krazylegz: You fixed it?
[01:33:00] D-side: it was never a problem, and i'm just unattentive.
[01:33:00] D-side: i was basing my statement on the recorded programs listed in the web gui.
[01:33:00] Krazylegz: Ah.
[01:33:00] D-side: these were shows that were recorded prior to the move, on the old carrier.
[01:34:00] D-side: so sure, they were recorded on whatever channel it was back then, and the channel data was saved. of course, that corresponds to new name data, and thats why i was stupid.

[01:51:00] redfox_away: Krazylegz, will that remove the channels I don't want?

[01:52:00] Icks: if you wipe the channel database it will update with what zap2it has for sure.. have done that a couple times
[01:52:00] Juski: it won't hurt to try that.. one of the few things that can't harm
[01:52:00] redfox_away: yeah I think I'll have to wipe the channel database... it is saying most of the data is up to date
[01:53:00] redfox_away: which table to I need to clear?

[03:03:00] poonj: if I get a PVR-500, is there a remote for that?
[03:03:00] poonj: if not, is it possible to get a remote for it?
[03:03:00] Krazylegz: Depends on which version you get.
[03:03:00] redfox_away: I don't think the 500 has a remote option... check newegg
[03:03:00] briand: the PVR-500MCE (Media Center Edition) definitely does _not_ include a remote...
[03:04:00] Krazylegz: Isn't there a non-MCE model?
[03:04:00] Krazylegz: Looking on their page, maybe there isn't.
[03:04:00] Krazylegz: http://hauppauge.com/pages/compare_pvr.html
[03:04:00] redfox_away: yeah I think that is just for the 150s
[03:04:00] Krazylegz: Yeah, I mean a non-MCE PVR-500.
[03:04:00] Krazylegz: I guess you could always add a remote to the system.
[03:05:00] poonj: some type of ps2 device?
[03:07:00] Krazylegz: There are lots of remotes.
[03:09:00] poonj: that would work with myth?
[03:09:00] poonj: so if I get the windows mce certified remote..
[03:09:00] poonj: it'd work?
[03:12:00] redfox_away: poonj, I'm using a serial port IR reader, it works with almost any remote

[03:13:00] poonj: well
[03:13:00] poonj: for the PVR-500
[03:13:00] redfox_away: but I've never used one
[03:13:00] poonj: it says it comes with a MCE certified remote..
[03:13:00] redfox_away: ah well the input to the computer doesn't matter, use whatever works for you
[03:13:00] Krazylegz: The PVR-500 MCE does not come with a remote.
[03:14:00] poonj: there is a version that does

[05:09:00] abarbaccia: because i think i might wanna write one if a few people could help me out
[05:09:00] hadees: abarbaccia, mythstream
[05:09:00] GreyFoxx: there is an unofficial mythstream that does that
[05:09:00] abarbaccia: hurm
[05:09:00] abarbaccia: how bootleg is it to be unofficial
[05:10:00] GreyFoxx: It's just not part of the main source or maintained by one of the devs
[05:10:00] hadees: abarbaccia, there are a few that are unoffical, but that one is mainly because it isn't where Chutt wanted it
[05:10:00] GreyFoxx: I've never actually seen it
[05:10:00] hadees: I have used it, not really that bad
[05:10:00] patdk2: I installed it butdoesn'twork for me yet
[05:10:00] hadees: i belive Chutt wanted streaming audio in mythmusic
[05:10:00] hadees: and streaming video in mythvideo
[05:11:00] hadees: something like that
[05:11:00] abarbaccia: so i think that action needs to be made on mythmusic then
[05:11:00] abarbaccia: geeze – that would be insane
[05:12:00] hadees: abarbaccia, just what i remember, you should ask Chutt for the real truth
[05:12:00] hadees: i could be wrong
[05:12:00] redfox: when running nuvexport-dvd, do I want to enable deinterlacing??

[05:38:00] Phydoux: Question: I have a program that I recorded via a PVR-150, so it is in MPEG2 format.
[05:38:00] Phydoux: I then transcoded that recording to MPEG4.
[05:38:00] Phydoux: When I watch it on my TV it looks fine.
[05:38:00] Phydoux: When I watch that same recording on my Windows box via mythweb, the colors are washed out.
[05:38:00] Phydoux: Is this something anybody here has heard of?
[05:40:00] sphing: is it possible they have different versions of divx
[05:41:00] Phydoux: I suppose that it is possible. I'd have to check on that.
[05:41:00] Phydoux: On Linux it would be xvid, right?
[05:42:00] Phydoux: I do have the xvid codec installed on my Windows box but it is probably an older one... but when WMP comes up it seems to be using DivX, not Xvid.

[06:05:00] Chutt: someone's working on that, see the dev list
[06:05:00] Chutt: cuz, like
[06:05:00] Krazylegz: He could update the default list, too. None of them even worked for me.
[06:05:00] Chutt: when you go to play music
[06:05:00] Chutt: it shouldn't matter where the hell the music's coming from

[06:05:00] Krazylegz: Like, for real. :-)
[06:06:00] Chutt: highly annoying that the guy who spent all that time on 'mythstream' didn't understand that
[06:06:00] Krazylegz: Indeed.
[06:07:00] Chutt: regarding the 'default list', i think that should be hosted on mythtv.org and re-downloaded periodically
[06:07:00] Chutt: (and allow user customization, of course)
[06:07:00] Chutt: that would be neeto
[06:07:00] Chutt: so it could be automatically updated

[06:09:00] GreyFoxx: can you actually specify and aspect ratio value in an avi file or do players just calculate it based on the resolution ?
[06:09:00] Chutt: players calculate it based on the resolution, i believe
[06:09:00] patdk2: neither really
[06:10:00] patdk2: most players just use 1:1 or 4:3 and don't calc anything
[06:10:00] Krazylegz: Hmm. Eric.
[06:10:00] GreyFoxx: Chutt: Damn.
[06:10:00] patdk2: you have no idea how much fun I have trying to guess aspectratio for transcodin
[06:11:00] patdk2: if i's 1:1, ntsc 4:3 or 16:9, or pal 4:3 or 16:9
[06:11:00] patdk2: or some other odd thing
[06:11:00] GreyFoxx: I've got a 544x480 4:3 mpeg I want to convert to a 544x480 4:3 xvid. But anytime I play the new xvid/avi players see it as 1.13:1 instead of 1.33:1 and it doesn't get scaled
[06:11:00] Chutt: err, if they didn't use the resolution, then lots of stuff wouldn't play properly.
[06:12:00] patdk2: grayfox, I think you will need to make that 640x480
[06:12:00] patdk2: cause mpeg actually storesthe 4:3
[06:12:00] GreyFoxx: patdk2: that's what I figured, I was hoping I could let the player handle it
[06:12:00] syle: mpegs always 4:3?
[06:12:00] GreyFoxx: syle: no
[06:12:00] GreyFoxx: It just happens to be in this case
[06:12:00] patdk2: but mpeg stores what the ratio is
[06:13:00] syle: i was wondering how i could convert my vob widescreens to 4:3
[06:13:00] patdk2: syle, pan and scan, chop, or widescreen
[06:13:00] patdk2: those are the only options
[06:14:00] syle: i was watching a video while it was ripping and it was in english , when i went back again to watch it it was in french!

[06:16:00] syle: its like it switches the audio stream at the end on me lol
[06:16:00] patdk2: though it was english, but it really was spanish

[14:36:00] Aji-Dahaka: juski: :( that's too bad
[14:36:00] juski: always best to do your research before buying hardware ;)
[14:36:00] juski: when you say 'bt derived' chip what is it?
[14:36:00] Aji-Dahaka: was in an hurry, had 3 days before I had to be back in Japan
[14:36:00] Aji-Dahaka: bt8x8, it appears
[14:37:00] Aji-Dahaka: wish there were a good way to tell that didn't void warranty
[14:37:00] juski: the important part for you will be which chip it uses for the usb bridge
[14:38:00] Aji-Dahaka: any good way to tell that?
[14:38:00] juski: what does lsusb say?
[14:38:00] Aji-Dahaka: I did lsusb -v, but the output was ... cryptic and lang
[14:38:00] Aji-Dahaka: long*
[14:38:00] Aji-Dahaka: would you like me to pastebin it for you?
[14:38:00] juski: good plan
[14:39:00] ** Aji-Dahaka boots the machine...just a moment **
[14:40:00] juski: just out of curiosity why did you buy USB? is it for a laptop?
[14:40:00] Aji-Dahaka: yeah
[14:40:00] juski: usb2?
[14:40:00] Aji-Dahaka: it seems to work well enough in win32, but I hadn't realised there was so little support for usb tuners in lin
[14:40:00] Aji-Dahaka: yeah, usb2
[14:41:00] juski: is the video device usb2 aswell?
[14:41:00] Aji-Dahaka: video device?
[14:41:00] juski: the Tv thing.. is that USB2 compliant?
[14:41:00] Aji-Dahaka: yeah, the box is usb2
[14:42:00] juski: so it'll be worth bothering with, then :)
[14:43:00] Aji-Dahaka: juski: it really is pretty nice except for the win dependence it adds
[14:43:00] juski: nobody likes being dependent on that OS
[14:44:00] Aji-Dahaka: I usually avoid it. My professors said to watch more TV, though
[14:44:00] Aji-Dahaka: the tv tuners here are all 200USD and up
[14:44:00] juski: in Japan?
[14:44:00] Aji-Dahaka: got this thing on newegg for 80 or so
[14:44:00] Aji-Dahaka: yeah
[14:44:00] juski: I would have thought it'd be a lot cheaper
[14:44:00] Aji-Dahaka: tv tuners are oddly very expensive here
[14:45:00] juski: I suppose importing from taiwan isn't much of an option either
[14:50:00] juski: how's that pastebin coming along, Aji-Dahaka?
[14:50:00] Aji-Dahaka: juski: had to recompile kernel, but done now...sorry for the delaf
[14:50:00] Aji-Dahaka: delay

[14:54:00] Aji-Dahaka: I imagine it will work in vmware if it works otherwise, though
[14:55:00] GreyFoxx: I've never attempted to use a usb device under vmware. But anytime you put an emulator layer between you and the hardware I can just imagine some issues
[14:55:00] GreyFoxx: but like I said I've never tried it either
[14:56:00] Aji-Dahaka: GreyFoxx: well, it's not bad, vmware has a pass-through interface where it passes _all_ of the usb signals through
[14:57:00] GreyFoxx: Nifty. I use vmware all the time but never had reason to use it with a usb device
[14:57:00] Aji-Dahaka: I also never/almost never do
[14:57:00] laga: when i tried it, vmware wouldnt work with my webcam because it didnt support bidirectional communication
[14:58:00] Aji-Dahaka: wonder if the newer vmwares have fixed that?
[14:58:00] laga: i dont know, sorry
[14:59:00] Aji-Dahaka: juski: find anything useful?
[14:59:00] GreyFoxx: Anyone offhand know what tool I can use to extract the video only portion out of an avi ? It seems like everything I find is centered around ripping the audio only
[14:59:00] laga: GreyFoxx: extract the audio stream and create a diff? SCNR ;)
[14:59:00] Aji-Dahaka: GreyFoxx: mplayer?
[14:59:00] laga: GreyFoxx: maybw avidemux2? i don't know
[15:00:00] Aji-Dahaka: if you do -ao null, the output should be soundless
[15:00:00] Skaface: i think it says on vmware.com that webcams work with version 5
[15:00:00] GreyFoxx: I was hoping I could use one of the transcode utils but so far haven't gotten that to work
[15:00:00] GreyFoxx: Aji-Dahaka: To rip it to a file? I'm not looking to play it
[15:00:00] juski: Aji – I think the OVCam drivers support your device – not 100% sure
[15:00:00] GreyFoxx: just want to seperate the streams
[15:00:00] laga: Skaface: nice
[15:01:00] Aji-Dahaka: GreyFoxx: mplayer (mencoder) can output to file
[15:01:00] GreyFoxx: laga: That might do it. I'll have to install it and give it a shot :)
[15:02:00] GreyFoxx: yes, but will it let me extract it without processing it? If so I suppose I could do the same with transcode or mencoder
[15:02:00] Aji-Dahaka: juski: ovcam doesn't handle tuners, though?
[15:02:00] Aji-Dahaka: GreyFoxx: good question...I'm always or almost always changing formats, too
[15:03:00] GreyFoxx: In this case the video is exactly as I want it. I just wanna remove the audio :)
[15:05:00] juski: not looking hopeful, Aji I'm afraid :(
[15:05:00] Aji-Dahaka: juski: I was afraid of that...
[15:06:00] Aji-Dahaka: juski: Win32 it is, then :(
[15:06:00] juski: anyway even if a webcam driver worked with it, mythtv couldn't use it AFAIK
[15:07:00] juski: if the device was a DVB-T tuner it'd be a different matter of course
[15:07:00] laga: juski: i think it's video 4 linux.
[15:08:00] laga: it's just a matter of changing the channel
[15:08:00] laga: maybe you can use the external channel changing script functionality here.

[23:03:00] CanadaBoy: the backend had 200 gb of hd
[23:03:00] mchou: so?
[23:03:00] CanadaBoy: can the frontend record to the backend or does it have to record to itself?
[23:03:00] mchou: which part of network volume anywhere dont you understand?
[23:04:00] CanadaBoy: don't know what that is
[23:04:00] mchou: CanadaBoy: too bad
[23:05:00] mchou: CanadaBoy: try reading the myth docs
[23:05:00] briand: and, for what it's worth... the frontend doesn't record; the backend does.
[23:06:00] mchou: briand: haha, good point
[23:06:00] briand: good afternoon, mchou.. how're you doing today?

[23:31:00] briand: rama: what issues are you encountering?
[23:32:00] rama: CyberKnet, some accentuated characters look horrible
[23:32:00] rama: CyberKnet, I was playing around with the .xml files for the translation but I have no idea how to generate the appropriate encodings to fit in there
[23:33:00] rama: plus copy-pasting the encoded char used on another translated string, fixed the problem, but would like to know more about the encodings in there, as I will work out the unstranslated stuff

[23:35:00] briand: CyberKnet: there was nothing misspelled there... just typed in various codepages. (russian and french, to be exact)
[23:36:00] briand: "i wonder what codepage you are using..." & "perhaps changing that would help."
[23:37:00] rama: briand, let me confirm
[23:37:00] rama: es_ES ?
[23:37:00] ** CyberKnet curses his client **
[23:38:00] rama: should I set it to UTF-8 ?
[23:38:00] ** rama is almost analphabet for charset stuff **
[23:39:00] briand: rama: perhaps changing the default font to one that renders a better looking spanish charset ...
[23:39:00] briand: are you experiencing the problem just in the myth menus, or in the OSD as well?
[23:41:00] rama: briand, ah! good idea, i thought this about related to font, but the funny thing is the accentuated chars, get fixed if I change the "encoded bits" which show up in the XML, the look cryptic in there
[23:41:00] rama: but using the (let's say) "format" from the string which renders correctly instead of the "mis-encoded one" fixes the issue
[23:42:00] rama: briand, i didn't try the OSD things yet, I'm working on a plugin to tune into remote streams, based on myth-video
[23:42:00] rama: mythvideo, sorry
[23:42:00] briand: ah.
[23:43:00] briand: but you bring up a valid point... the whole application and the various utilities should be written with multi-language support built in...
[23:43:00] rama: briand, so the font could be a thing to check, however I would probably need to know how to generate the "encodings" for fitting the strings into the xml files
[23:43:00] briand: ...so that one would need only specify the 'default language' in the configuration
[23:43:00] rama: they aren't ?
[23:44:00] rama: I understand they do, but I might be wrong
[23:44:00] briand: the typical first step in "internationalization" of code is extracting all the strings to a single module.
[23:45:00] rama: hmm, that's what I did I think, from the mythtv-setup or somewhere around config.. I've set lang to spanish and it starts reading the spanish strings from the respective XMLs
[23:45:00] briand: thus, the translators could be put to work on a simple file, rather than having to wade through the code...
