[00:39:00] Ryushin: Nope. Left Redhat long ago. Still have to support my customers on it though. Switching as many as I can over to debain though.
[00:39:00] Good4now: would also depend how the system is configured if you run DVD on the primary ide interface as slave would be different as well
[00:41:00] Good4now: well I am kind of partial to fedora myself not much of a fan of redhat....and mandriva does not support all of my hardware
[00:42:00] Good4now: does anyone know how to fix this cdaudio bug with fc4 though?
[00:43:00] Good4now: looked everywhere for an answer
[00:43:00] qfx: never had a problem with cdaudio
[00:43:00] Ryushin: Really? Oh, you mean out of the box. I guess I always can support my own hardware since I pretty much always compile my own kernels on my own boxes. Especially if I'm going to have lots of wired hardware. Such as myth.  :)

[00:45:00] qfx: I've even tried ivtvctl
[00:45:00] qfx: Notorious, not xaw, I don't think I have that on my system
[00:45:00] Good4now: never used an ivtv card but having bought an saa7134 card I wish you luck
[00:46:00] qfx: thanks
[00:46:00] Good4now: bad support for some of those as well even with self-compiling
[00:46:00] qfx: It's my first time. A friend said MythTV is awesome if you can get it going. I bought a Hauppauge and haven't gotten it to go yet
[00:46:00] Good4now: I just bought a Twinhan DVB-s card

[00:47:00] Good4now: try it on a windows box first
[00:47:00] qfx: It's MCE, so I don't know if it would work under XP (doubt it) and I don't have Windows on this box

[00:48:00] brian_1: I don't need to be running the front end to record scheduled shows right? as long as I have the backend going?
[00:49:00] Good4now: well I bought the sabrent for like $30 and was eventually able to get it to work I guess sometimes the best bet is to start out with new or known good working hardware
[00:49:00] Good4now: looks like it look in your modprobe and see if its being loaded
[00:49:00] twisted_one: brian_1: correct, the front end is just used for the viewing thereof.
[00:50:00] qfx: I bought the hauppauge because I thought it was supposed to be a well supported one.
[00:50:00] brian_1: Thanks twisted_one.
[00:50:00] twisted_one: qfx: it is, at least in contrast with the others
[00:50:00] qfx: Yes, I suppose it's all relative :)
[00:50:00] Good4now: depends on the chipset more than the manufacturer the card I bought from TD had a different chipset than advertised
[00:50:00] twisted_one: Does anyone know of a way to have myth browse through my directory structure, I have myth-video but that only is configured for one directory.
[00:51:00] qfx: How do I check to see in my modprobe if it's loaded? I execute
[00:51:00] qfx: # /sbin/depmod -ae
[00:51:00] qfx: # /sbin/modprobe ivtv
[00:51:00] qfx: to get the /dev/video to show up
[00:51:00] Good4now: sometime ago they changed chipsets...happauge generally is supposed to have good support but also depends on your distro
[00:51:00] qfx: Fedora
[00:51:00] twisted_one: nah, the distro doesn't matter.
[00:51:00] chickeneater (n=lastlee@unaffiliated/chickeneater) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[00:51:00] twisted_one: Its all in the ivtv driver.
[00:52:00] Good4now: well if you need specific drivers then it kind of does
[00:52:00] Good4now: if the kernel won't load the driver correctly then it won't matter what you are using to watch tv
[00:53:00] Good4now: software wise
[00:54:00] Good4now: also check and see in your modprobe.conf file that no other TV card drivers are being loaded if you took out or had a different card in there before
[00:54:00] qfx: What confuses me is that it recognizes it as an MPEG-2 stream
[00:54:00] qfx: First card.
[00:54:00] qfx: like when I do an mplayer /dev/video0
[00:55:00] qfx: Can I cut and paste the output here? Maybe you can see something
[00:55:00] Good4now: yes but even without not knowing ivtv drivers it seems it should be registerring other devices as well
[00:55:00] qfx: or in a new tab
[00:55:00] Good4now: dcc me
[00:56:00] twisted_one: Good4now: I re-iterate distro doesn't matter, give me any distro and I can get the card working provided it works on one.

[01:20:00] qfx: twisted_one: It seems to be mostly black screen now, with periods of some static

[05:21:00] Igg-man: I can't get my remote working, irw can see the key presses, but mythtv doesn't seem to do anything
[05:22:00] Agrajag-: are you using myth's internal lirc support?
[05:22:00] Igg-man: I've tried both that and irxevent, but I'm not sure I'm doing either of them right
[05:22:00] Igg-man: what is easier?
[05:23:00] defaultro: hey Agrajag
[05:23:00] Agrajag-: well if you've got lirc support compiled in myth then i'd say that's the better way to go (i've had issues with irxevent and X screens and stuff)
[05:23:00] Igg-man: ok
[05:24:00] Igg-man: So, let me make sure I'm doing this right... I have a /etc/lircd.conf that is customized to my remote
[05:24:00] Igg-man: Then, mythtv reads ~/.mythtv/lircrc file and ties the key presses found from lircd to actual key presses in the program
[05:24:00] Igg-man: does that sound right?
[05:25:00] Agrajag-: yep
[05:25:00] dotsony: i've got an saa7134 card that only supports dma audio. when I run tvtime + aplay -r 32000 /dev/dsp1, i get slightly laggy sound. When I run mythfrontend, I get nothing
[05:25:00] Igg-man: How can I check if mythtv is even connecting to lircd?
[05:25:00] dotsony: except some noise
[05:25:00] Agrajag-: you need to have prog = mythtv and button = SOMETHING
[05:25:00] Agrajag-: where SOMETHING is a valid button that you have in lircd.conf (and what you see when you watch irw)
[05:25:00] Igg-man: hmm... I might not have that, it might prog = irxevent
[05:25:00] Igg-man: nope... I got prog = mythtv
[05:25:00] Agrajag-: you need prog = mythtv for the internal support
[05:26:00] dotsony: i've tried setting the audio device for the capture card to /dev/dsp1 but that does not seem to help
[05:26:00] Agrajag-: dotsony: are you using alsa?
[05:26:00] dotsony: and actually, mythtv-setup wouldn't store that setting

[05:27:00] dotsony: hmm
[05:27:00] dotsony: so you are suggesting the problem is with the frontend?

[05:28:00] thechris: anyone know what wm8775 is and where i can get it?
[05:28:00] Agrajag-: yeah. i had that happen to me – i didn't have lirc when i first installed mythtv, then installed lirc, ran configure, saw it has lirc support = yes, so i figured i already had it.. but i didn't, i had to rebuild
[05:29:00] Agrajag-: thechris: no idea, but a wild guess is it's part of sensors? sounds like a sensors module
[05:29:00] Igg-man: I hope that is all it is
[05:29:00] dotsony: the other interesting thing is that when mythbackend is running

[05:29:00] dotsony: fuser /dev/dsp1

[05:41:00] thechris: ok, seems wm8775 is part of the ivtv driver
[05:41:00] thechris: server reboot
[05:42:00] eidolon: platform question – i'm going to be ordering a hauppage card shortly for my first mythtv project. available machines i have lying around are limited though. a couple 400mghz sff machines, a dual 700mghz machine, and an athlon 1400, though the athlon won't be available for a few weeks. will a dual 700 keep up okay?
[05:43:00] Igg-man: eidolon: I bet it will (if you get a 150, 250, 350 or 500 card)
[05:43:00] eidolon: i will.
[05:43:00] Igg-man: do you know what card you are going to get?
[05:44:00] eidolon: nope. not yet. i like the idea of the 500, i'm a little worried about support for it.
[05:44:00] eidolon: though i've heard that it's basically just a pair of 150's.
[05:44:00] Igg-man: I've got that one working... yep just a pair of 150s
[05:45:00] eidolon: any noodling required? i'll most likely go with knoppmyth if at all possible. goal is a remote box downstairs in the 'tv room' doing recording and tuning, with remote viewing up here in my office of stored video and other goodies.
[05:47:00] Igg-man: Hmm
[05:47:00] mchou: anyone recommend a good NF3 939 (AGP/PCI) mobo with firewire on it already?
[05:47:00] Igg-man: I have not used knoppmyth
[05:48:00] eidolon: the whole turnkey aspect has me intrigued. goal is for mythtv operations (pvr stuff), mp3 archive, and mame stuff.
[05:48:00] eidolon: which is all rolled in with the knoppmyth distro.
[05:48:00] Igg-man: To get everything working, the stupid things I ran into were: Don't use the kernel ivtv drivers, download the bleading edge cvs of ivtv and something else... I can't remember
[05:48:00] Igg-man: I've seen it, actually, I've used it too
[05:49:00] Igg-man: I think we played around with it and got something like 5 devices showing the same show (haha)
[05:49:00] eidolon: hah.
[05:50:00] eidolon: do you just nfs mount the filestore, and use like mplayer to play them remotely?
[05:50:00] Igg-man: Yah, I was a bit surprised. I don't think the box even broke a sweat
[05:50:00] eidolon: or is there some streaming system?
[05:50:00] ** eidolon is new to mythtv. **
[05:50:00] Igg-man: there is a few different ways to do it. The best/cleanest way I've seen to do remote viewing is to use the knoppmyth in a frontend configuration only
[05:51:00] eidolon: hmm.
[05:51:00] Igg-man: there is a package called dsmith (or was it dsmyth?) that will add a mythtv:// to internet exploiter to play from mythweb
[05:51:00] eidolon: i don't quite understand what you mean by that. it may not make sense to go into details on this now until i actually sit down to set up the ystem.

[05:52:00] Igg-man: okay, that is good
[05:52:00] Igg-man: if you have linux on all of your computers, you could just run mythfrontend on them, and connect to the backend that has the pvr-500 card in it
[05:53:00] eidolon: huh
[05:53:00] Igg-man: My brother somewhat intended on leaving his mythtv box headless, and only playing through the webinterface or from the xbox, or knoppmyth

[06:35:00] diamon: What does it do wrong?
[06:35:00] thechris: static
[06:35:00] thechris: it just shows static
[06:36:00] diamon: But the xawtv or other tools show video fine?
[06:37:00] thechris: no idea
[06:37:00] thechris: its a remote macheine
[06:37:00] diamon: So what are you doing in the cli? And what kind of card is it?
[06:37:00] travolta: maybe you are recording static
[06:37:00] thechris: no, i record the files
[06:37:00] thechris: then share over nfs
[06:38:00] Agrajag-: you're recording files?
[06:38:00] thechris: Agrajag-: manually, yes
[06:38:00] diamon: And manually done thwy work fine?
[06:38:00] Agrajag-: well mythtv records tv, not files
[06:38:00] thechris: ok fine
[06:39:00] thechris: i'm doing at the cli:
[06:39:00] Agrajag-: can you explain what you're doing and what's working a bit better?
[06:39:00] diamon: That's what I'm hoping for...
[06:39:00] thechris: ivtvctl -u 0x3000; ivtvctl – p 6; cat /dev/video0 > ~/file.mpg
[06:39:00] thechris: oh, and there's also a ptune.pl command

[06:39:00] thechris: pvr 500mce
[06:40:00] thechris: i haven't tested video1 yet.
[06:40:00] thechris: well, i have in mythtv and it didn't work either
[06:40:00] diamon: Ok. But neither one works in myth, right?
[06:40:00] thechris: both give only static
[06:41:00] thechris: all channels all tuners
[06:41:00] Agrajag-: have you setup your channels properly?
[06:41:00] diamon: Can you use ptune.pl to change channels at the cli?
[06:41:00] thechris: yep
[06:41:00] thechris: to both
[06:42:00] diamon: Ok. Reset your card type for myth via mythsetup or whatever that initial config tool is. Tell it to reset the card data and make sure to set it up again.
[06:42:00] thechris: ok
[06:43:00] diamon: You may even want to reset the DB, reinitialize the database entirely. That'd be my two votes.
[06:44:00] brian_1: Is the high quality setting better than default for the hauppauge pvr 250?
[06:45:00] diamon: Depends on how you set it, but yes, by default I think it's 4mbit vs 2 or something. I reset mine entirely though. Of course, I'm fussy like that.
[06:45:00] diamon: Though I think low, default, and live TV are all the same settings, and I changed those as well.
[06:46:00] diamon: And now I lurk again....
[06:47:00] brian_1: hehe thanks
[06:49:00] thechris: eh, resetting stuff seems to have worked. i just hope it records stuff on both tuners correctly from now on

[14:47:00] MrSpiffy: question about myth's escape key sequence – can it be changed to CTRL-F1 ? That key stroke powers on the machine so it would be nice to use it to exit myth and shut down
[14:47:00] dberry (n=dberry@red-fw.ammasso.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[14:49:00] GreyFoxx: MrSpiffy: You could use Mythweb to edit the ESCAPE key to whatever you like
[14:49:00] GreyFoxx: But it wouldn't be a single keystroke shutdown button if that is what you are looking for
[14:50:00] GreyFoxx: Plus without source modification I do not believe you even get the shutdown menu option unless it's a frontend only machine
[14:50:00] MrSpiffy: GreyFoxx, I don't want to remap the esc key for everything – I noticed a few options for the power key sequence but CTRL-F1 isn;t one of them
[14:50:00] GreyFoxx: MrSpiffy: I'm not talking able the ESC key, I'm talking about the ESCAPE key/action
[14:51:00] MrSpiffy: I also looked into using acpid to do it – it seems that acpi will respond to hard option keys not key stroke sequences
[14:51:00] MrSpiffy: in myth I was looking at the System Exit Key

[14:54:00] MrSpiffy: damn
[14:54:00] MrSpiffy: my MB powers on with CTRL-F1....F12
[14:55:00] GreyFoxx: And that key still brings you to the menu to shutdown. It doesn't just shutdown your computer
[14:55:00] MrSpiffy: I was hoping to get the system to poweroff with the same sequence and then be able to program my power buttin on remote with it
[14:55:00] MrSpiffy: I think I need a way to bind that key sequence to "poweroff"
[14:55:00] Dibblah: That's not going to work for... So many reasons.
[14:58:00] GreyFoxx: MrSpiffy: Is this a frontend only ?
[14:58:00] MrSpiffy: GreyFoxx, yes – a set top frontend only
[14:59:00] GreyFoxx: k
[15:00:00] MrSpiffy: even a way to map Ctrl+F1 to Ctrl+Alt+Del would work as the kernel will monitor that sequence just fine

[15:11:00] GreyFoxx: Mapping a keystroke on a keyboard and having it execute a shell script is simple. But if it has to be CTRL+ something then it's harder
[15:14:00] MrSpiffy: hm
[15:15:00] MrSpiffy: I just tested the 3 finger salute on the frontend box with X/blackbox/mythfrontend running – nada
[15:15:00] MrSpiffy: not trapping that keystroke either
[15:15:00] GreyFoxx: Toldya :)
[15:16:00] MrSpiffy: funny thing is that keystroke does get trapped on this machine running X/gnome
[15:16:00] GreyFoxx: Can you use Just F1 instead of CTRL-F1 ?
[15:16:00] MrSpiffy: GreyFoxx, nope – options in bios for powerup are CTRL+F1 to F12
[15:16:00] GreyFoxx: It's just sent as an input event. It's up to the windowmanager/X to decide what to do with it
[15:16:00] MrSpiffy: hmm
[15:16:00] GreyFoxx: MrSpiffy: Too bad, cause that would have been simple
[15:17:00] MrSpiffy: then it may be possible to have X monitor/and poweroff on the even Ctrl+F1
[15:18:00] MrSpiffy: I wonder if I should be looking into xmodmap

[15:25:00] MrSpiffy: sounds promising
[15:25:00] GreyFoxx: Wouldn't work for a CTRL+ event though

[15:27:00] GreyFoxx: I don't know if any distros come with it or not. I've always installed from source

[16:11:00] MrSpiffy: NetBOPP, my mb powers on with CTRL+F1 I would like to get it to call poweroff (/sbin/halt) with the same keystroke
[16:11:00] NetBOPP: simcop2387: Ok. I remap my remote keystrokes by using something like input-kbd package I think
[16:12:00] simcop2387: MrSpiffy: well if you were using lirc it'd be easy, though i think you should be able to do something with init...
[16:12:00] NetBOPP: MrSpiffy: Ok. Don't think my simple remapping sw can do something like that. :(
[16:12:00] soi-disant: deep, if you're really that stuck, it's time to try an alternative path to the same result. Seriously, start trying to compile and install the ivtv modules from source.

[16:15:00] simcop2387: this is why i like lirc over IR keyboards, with lirc it'd be a single entry in the config file
[16:15:00] laga: soi-disant: he could get the packages via http, using his browsers, and install them via rpm -i
[16:16:00] MrSpiffy: simcop2387, my plan is to program my remote with the ir keyboard :)
[16:16:00] GreyFoxx: MrSpiffy: I doubt you would be able to program CTRL-F1 to a remote
[16:17:00] GreyFoxx: remember it's TWO key strokes, not a single one
[16:17:00] soi-disant: that could work, but could he be finding a mismatch from the FC kernel name, and the generic names that may come with the packaging? if so would this change if he had the actual package locally?
[16:17:00] MrSpiffy: GreyFoxx, I think I can – I use a sony ir programmable
[16:17:00] MrSpiffy: GreyFoxx, it will just store the whole ir string

[16:18:00] MrSpiffy: GreyFoxx, you have a point – I should try that first and test with a power on
[16:18:00] simcop2387: MrSpiffy: http://criticalmass.sourceforge.net/keyWatcher.php one of those might be able to help, though if your a programmer it seems the /dev/event interface would easily suffice

[19:57:00] sphery: deepdelver: I'll give you the right syntax if you promise to post your information to the ivtv list as requested in my post... ;)

[20:00:00] Beirdo: of course not, it wasn't an instant fix
[20:01:00] sphery: hehe
[20:01:00] deepdelver: are you planning to help me or do you only give me more work

[20:03:00] deepdelver: i have now 3 pvr 150's
[20:03:00] sphery: deepdelver: Assuming you've already subscribed to the ivtv mailing lists, posting the information will only take you about 5 minutes. If you have to sign up for ivtv, it might take you 10 minutes.
[20:04:00] deepdelver: yeah but then i dont have any answers right?
[20:04:00] sphery: The link I gave specifies exactly what I'm asking you to do. http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/145930#145930
[20:04:00] sphery: I'll also give you the answer
[20:04:00] sphery: The benefit of my approach is that besides helping yourself, you're also helping anyone else who buys a card like yours.
[20:04:00] deepdelver: yeah but i dont understand what i need to do
[20:06:00] sphery: Do you understand the request for additional information? If so, I'll give you the syntax you need to /also/ fix the problem right now. But, eventually, the problem will be automatically handled by the ivtv drivers (at which you can continue using the fix I give you or take it out).

[20:41:00] sphery: That command will put the contents into a file called output.txt in the current directory--make it easier to grab only the contents
[20:41:00] sphery: :)
[20:41:00] deepdelver: where is it saved
[20:41:00] sphery: So, now post the contents of output.txt (in the directory from which you executed the command) to pastebin
[20:42:00] StefanD: hello everyone. can someone help me to apply a patch?
[20:42:00] deepdelver: http://pastebin.com/361762
[20:43:00] GreyFoxx: 99% of the time it's just cd /root/of/source ; patch -p0 < file.patch
[20:43:00] GreyFoxx: but depending on the patch you might need to adjust the -p parameter
[20:43:00] sphery: deepdelver: OK, and that was before modprobe'ing ivtv, right?
[20:43:00] deepdelver: yes
[20:43:00] StefanD: thank you GreyFoxx, i'll try
[20:43:00] sphery: Perfect! Now, try "modprobe ivtv" (with no options specified)
[20:44:00] deepdelver: ok done
[20:44:00] sphery: Then, run the tac script again and post the contents of output.txt
[20:44:00] deepdelver: http://pastebin.com/361763
[20:45:00] StefanD: hehe, not sure where i should apply the patch :)
[20:46:00] deepdelver: sphery, not much different still a 150
[20:47:00] Dibblah: deepdelver: Which ivtv version are we on now?
[20:47:00] deepdelver: latest stable
[20:47:00] sphery: version 0.2.0 (rc3j)
[20:47:00] sphery: deepdelver: One second, please. Gotta check some source...
[20:47:00] deepdelver: Newest Stable Release is 0.2.0-rc3j
[20:47:00] deepdelver: maibe whe can try the latest unstable
[20:49:00] maniacxs: Hi, i have got a problem with mythtv and dvb-s using diseqc. when zapping with szap the zapping works. mythtv's scan does not find the programs. somebody here can help?
[20:50:00] deepdelver: i can't sorry
[20:51:00] deepdelver: sphery, shall i download the unstable one??
[20:51:00] sphery: deepdelver: won't make any difference at this point, so it's probably not worth switching...
[20:53:00] deepdelver: ok
[20:54:00] deepdelver: sphery last time on fc 3 i had that one but somebody told me to use stable on

[20:59:00] deepdelver: still ivtv?
[21:00:00] sphery: Yeah.
[21:01:00] deepdelver: thnx
[21:01:00] sphery: OK. Let's try editing your /etc/modprobe.conf and adding the line:
[21:01:00] sphery: options ivtv cardtype=1
[21:01:00] sphery: Then, remove and modprobe ivtv
[21:03:00] Ryushin: I was reading that you can perform a dvb scan in myth. I can't seem to find out where it is. Any thoughts.
[21:03:00] sphery: deepdelver: does that still give you a PVR-150?
[21:04:00] Beirdo: I assume you are doing a depmod -a after messing with modprobe.conf
[21:04:00] sphery: Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that...
[21:04:00] sphery: thx, Beirdo
[21:04:00] Beirdo: no prob

[21:14:00] Tanthrix: All of a sudden it seems, all I got was static on my tuner. Colorful static with no audio.
[21:15:00] ** laga_ hasnt had any beer in two weeks **
[21:15:00] sphery: deepdelver: try changing /etc/modprobe.conf to say "options ivtv cardtype=2", then rmmod, depmod -a, then modprobe
[21:15:00] Tanthrix: Everything has been fine for weeks, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't something that I did recently. (Not that I've touched the driver for a few days, but I've been doing a few other things)
[21:15:00] deepdelver: ok
[21:15:00] Tanthrix: Including setting up a logical volume and recompiling mplayer.
[21:15:00] Tanthrix: In any case, I was getting no errors in my logs.
[21:16:00] laga_: Tanthrix: which card?
[21:16:00] Tanthrix: I'd get "encoder enabled / disabled" but no "set picture etc..." after it, and using ptune-ui did nothing
[21:16:00] Tanthrix: pvr150mce on 0.3.2y
[21:16:00] laga_: Tanthrix: do you have a windows box handy?
[21:16:00] sphery: Tanthrix: Have you tried powering off for 30 seconds and then rebooting? Just in case it's a bad register that got set by something?
[21:17:00] Tanthrix: Yes, tried that. and Yes, the box I'm on right now is windows.
[21:17:00] deepdelver: http://pastebin.com/361801
[21:17:00] Tanthrix: So, I tried installing the latest driver.

[21:17:00] deepdelver: i gues it works
[21:17:00] sphery: Hmmm.
[21:17:00] sphery: I guess someone updated the cardtypes, but forgot to update the modinfo help message...
[21:17:00] sphery: :(
[21:17:00] Tanthrix: And I actually had it working fine for a while. Was getting an error about cx25840 not loading...
[21:18:00] Tanthrix: Which was confusing, as my video was working fine.
[21:18:00] Tanthrix: So I rebooted, and after that, mplayer just stalls when I try and watch
[21:18:00] sphery: Anyway, deepdelver, I highly recommend doing another power off for 30 seconds, then continuing to set it up. That way, you know it's in the right state and not carry-over problems if you happen to have other issues...
[21:18:00] Tanthrix: so I think that somehow the older cx9540 module might have still been loaded despite using the new driver
[21:18:00] Tanthrix: and that's why it worked for a few minutes before I rebooted
[21:18:00] deepdelver: ?
[21:19:00] deepdelver: i need to reboot and then ?
[21:19:00] sphery: Tanthrix: cx25840 is the audio processor for the PVR-150--which explains your no audio.
[21:19:00] Tanthrix: (That is a random unsubstantiated hunch – I got desparate and ended up mixing the new driver with the old module and I still get the colorful static now on the new driver)
[21:19:00] jonK: deep you never did say where you acquired this card
[21:20:00] deepdelver: what means acquired
[21:20:00] deepdelver: ?

[21:21:00] sphery: Tanthrix: we can try the current one...

[21:41:00] Tanthrix: I'm trying to think of all the things I've done since it was last working. Problem is I'm not completely sure when it stopped working, I hadn't used the tv card for a few days.
[21:41:00] sphery: deepdelver: What I'm saying is that we don't know for sure it's the tuner causing the problem. Using ivtv requires a lot of setup that's easy to get wrong--especially with all the versions of ivtv and PVR-x50's--so assume the tuner works and let Myth set it up for you. If it doesn't work then, we can be relatively certain it's a problem with the card setup.
[21:42:00] Tanthrix: For certain, I tried to force my ethernet card into full duplex, which I undid just to be sure that wasn't in some weird way causing this.
[21:42:00] deepdelver: ok
[21:42:00] Tanthrix: (I have a hard time believing the card / drivers broke themselves)
[21:42:00] deepdelver: thnx
[21:42:00] Tanthrix: I installed lvm2 and setup a logical volume...I forced an uninstall of 2 mandrake packages about bootup themes because I was sick of the graphics on the console...
[21:43:00] Tanthrix: Changed the console resolution...installed directfb/libdirectfb/libdirectfb-devel and a few other things for an mplayer recompile.

[21:44:00] Tanthrix: I installed valknut from rpm.
[21:44:00] Tanthrix: My sound card has started making pops and clicks. And that's all that has happened around, before, or after this issue in the past couple days.
[21:45:00] Tanthrix: My cable amp also came unplugged for a few minutes.
[21:45:00] Tanthrix: (Just trying to give you everything incase there is some weird relationship that you might know)
[21:45:00] sphery: Tanthrix: OK. Thanks...

[21:59:00] sphery: Tanthrix: OK--because testing will be faster than searching all the code involved. What do you get when you add "options cx25840 i2c_enable=1" to your modprobe.conf (then depmod -a, then rmmod ivtv (and cx25840 and dependencies), and modprobe again)?
[21:59:00] Krazylegz: That's what I have been doing. Transcoding takes too many CPU cycles.
[21:59:00] GreyFoxx: Krazylegz: well, I still transcode. It's not just feeding the raw data to me

[22:38:00] dotsony: I try to run /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart as the mythtv user, and it dies saying it cant call initgroups
[22:38:00] sphery: No. God like would have meant I started with the simple fix (depmod -a) first...

[22:38:00] Tanthrix: I don't think that was it, I'm pretty sure I did that at some point along the way.
[22:39:00] sphery: In that case it may have been a compile/install problem.
[22:39:00] dotsony: and if i try to su i get some kind of session authentication error
[22:39:00] sphery: Either way, doing both fixed it...
[22:39:00] dotsony: and if I just run mythbackend -d it fails to connect to the mysql server
[22:39:00] Tanthrix: Now that I think about it, I did the first make in the root directory, then I realized I should have been in drivers, did a make clean, and started over
[22:39:00] Tanthrix: Or something like that. Could that have caused problems?
[22:39:00] dotsony: so the upshot of all this is that I can't seem to change backend settings without rebooting the whole machine
