[00:11:00] dmz: hey...i'm trying to watch encoded dvd's via networked system, however nfs doesn't like > 2gig files. any suggestions?
[00:12:00] chacon: dmz: using mythtv?
[00:12:00] chacon: i mean mythvideo
[00:12:00] Krazylegz: dmz: How about using something like FUSE instead of NFS maybe?
[00:12:00] chacon: wtf is ping ping?
[00:13:00] chacon: ping pong
[00:13:00] Krazylegz: You don't know what ping pong is?
[00:13:00] LedHed: thats odd. I view my ripped DVD from a NFS share. and they are all larger than 4gb..
[00:13:00] chacon: i keep seeing that in my irc programs's console
[00:13:00] chacon: i keep seeing ping brown.freenode.net chacon
[00:13:00] Krazylegz: Oh.
[00:13:00] chacon: pong brown.freenode.net
[00:14:00] Chutt: nfs does large files just fine.
[00:14:00] Krazylegz: I thought NFS did too.
[00:14:00] LedHed: isnt that what we just said?
[00:15:00] chacon: maybe its some nfs settings??
[00:15:00] chacon: export settings

[00:23:00] jono: is there a recommended video compression board for use with mythtv?
[00:23:00] Krazylegz: Haha.
[00:24:00] LedHed: jono, there are many
[00:24:00] dmz: Krazylegz i'll check it out
[00:24:00] chacon: yeah
[00:24:00] chacon: use pvr-150
[00:24:00] chacon: 250
[00:24:00] chacon: 350
[00:24:00] jono: is there any hardware which is particularly good?
[00:24:00] LedHed: jono, hauppauge pvr-150,250,500
[00:24:00] jono: chacon, which manufacturer?
[00:24:00] LedHed: hauppauge
[00:24:00] chacon: yup
[00:24:00] jono: cool
[00:24:00] Krazylegz: dmz: I believe FUSE gives you more options like FTP, SSH, etc. That will only help if your problem if NFS, though.
[00:25:00] chacon: i currently use a pvr350
[00:25:00] mirak (n=mirak@AAubervilliers-152-1-35-16.w83-114.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit ("Leaving")
[00:25:00] jono: so is the pvr-350 the best to use?
[00:26:00] dmz: i believe it's nfs
[00:26:00] jono: chacon, so does that recieve tv as well as encode mpeg?
[00:26:00] chacon: yes
[00:26:00] dmz: nfsd[5707]: non-standard errno: 75 (Value too large for defined data type)
[00:27:00] LedHed: juno, the 350 is good if you want to do tv-out from the same card. but it cant output Games and such
[00:27:00] chacon: the nice thing about the 350 is that it has a HW encoder and de-coder
[00:27:00] jono: chacon, so would I plug my sky box (satallite tv) into the pvr-350?
[00:27:00] chacon: so less cpu usage for play back
[00:27:00] chacon: :D
[00:27:00] jono: LedHed, cant output games?
[00:27:00] chacon: no
[00:27:00] chacon: whoops
[00:28:00] chacon: wrong window
[00:28:00] jono: heh
[00:28:00] LedHed: jono, mythtv is more than a Tivo. It is also a Game frontend, DVD Jukebox, etc....
[00:28:00] jono: LedHed, yes I know, but what do you mean it cant do games? as in, it doesnt do video accelleration?
[00:28:00] LedHed: jono, the PVR-350 won't do OpenGL
[00:29:00] chacon: use an nvidia card with tv-out for that
[00:29:00] LedHed: nvidia + pvr-250
[00:30:00] chacon: yes
[00:30:00] chacon: good choice
[00:30:00] jono: LedHed, right
[00:30:00] jono: how is the 250 different to the 350?
[00:30:00] chacon: 250 has no tv out
[00:30:00] chacon: no de-coder
[00:30:00] LedHed: 250 = 350 less tv-out
[00:31:00] chacon: dont forget HW de-coder
[00:31:00] chacon: all the pvrX50 line has a HW encoder.
[00:31:00] chacon: the only one with TV-out and HW de-coder is the pvr350
[00:32:00] LedHed: the pvr-150 & 500 are new and have more bugs with the IVTV driver...
[00:32:00] Tanthrix: as long as you don't have a really slow computer, nvidia + pvr150/250 is the way to go, the 150 being less supported at this time
[00:32:00] h1ro_ (i=nobody@cpc1-reig1-6-0-cust39.hers.cable.ntl.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:32:00] LedHed: the PVR-350 does have better TV out Quality then the nVidia cards...
[00:33:00] jono: is opengl acceleration needed for mythtv?
[00:33:00] chacon: no
[00:33:00] LedHed: not necessary, but it is used for the Onscreen displays and such. but you can do with out OGL
[00:33:00] chacon: the tv-out quality is about the same...
[00:33:00] jono: is the tv quality of the 250 hdtv quality?
[00:33:00] Tanthrix: It is nice though if you are not using the hardware 350 decoder
[00:33:00] chacon: no HD
[00:33:00] Tanthrix: reduces tearing
[00:34:00] chacon: i tried using an nvidia card VS a pvr350
[00:34:00] banyan: I didn't have much luck with my nvidia to my TV.
[00:34:00] jono: is the 350 hdtv quality?
[00:34:00] Tanthrix: for video timing, have to compile with support though
[00:34:00] chacon: and the pvr350 played smoother..
[00:34:00] LedHed: jono, HDTV doesnt need an engover because it is already in mpeg2 format. You just need a capture card....
[00:34:00] chacon: DOOD
[00:34:00] banyan: The 350 does not output hdtv.
[00:34:00] jono: right
[00:34:00] jono: sorry guys, I am quite new to this
[00:34:00] Tanthrix: nvidia drivers are a piece of cake these days, if you don't have a monitor on the same card, you should have to do nearly zero conf to get it working
[00:34:00] banyan: I tried the HDSC or whatever that funky connector is, got nothing viewable.
[00:34:00] jono: mythtv looks awesome :)
[00:34:00] ** LedHed man I cant type... encoder..  ;) **
[00:35:00] banyan: And the svideo output just didnt look good at all.
[00:35:00] jono: so is it better to use tv out on the 350 or on an nvidia card, or doesnt it matter?
[00:35:00] chacon: for HD go here
[00:35:00] chacon: http://www.pchdtv.com/
[00:35:00] banyan: As opposed to the 350's output which is quite clean and good.
[00:35:00] LedHed: jono, depends on the hardware
[00:36:00] jono: so my tv plugs into the 350, but I am just wondering if the output from my mythtv box will be as good quality as the output from my sky box?
[00:36:00] Gumby (n=gumby@d154-20-190-88.bchsia.telus.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:36:00] banyan: Let me put it this way, jono — you won't be disappointed with the 350's TV out. But with a video card, it's very much "your mileage may vary"
[00:36:00] LedHed: jono. it will not!
[00:36:00] jono: hmmm
[00:36:00] Notorious (n=notoriou@d54C299E3.access.telenet.be) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:36:00] LedHed: dont expect it to look like "Real TV"
[00:36:00] jono: so I am gonna take a drop in quality
[00:36:00] LedHed: yes
[00:37:00] jono: LedHed, really?
[00:37:00] LedHed: yes
[00:37:00] jono: how much worse is it?
[00:37:00] Tanthrix: With analog to digital conversation, there is no perfect
[00:37:00] LedHed: people may disagree with me. but its true. Tivo/ReplayTV have much better quality
[00:38:00] jono: could anyone take a photo or screenshot of their mythtv output?
[00:38:00] LedHed: its not the capture that is bad. its the TV-out/playback
[00:38:00] LedHed: jono, that wont help. you have to see it in action...
[00:38:00] Tanthrix: aye
[00:38:00] jono: is there any card that is as good as real tv?
[00:39:00] abarbaccia: jono, my tv looks like real tV
[00:39:00] chacon: ?
[00:39:00] chacon: mine too
[00:39:00] LedHed: there are jitters, and screen tearing, interlace issues, most of which can be adjusted. but it will never look as good as "Real TV"
[00:39:00] soi-disant (i=js2638@xmission.xmission.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:39:00] jono: hmmm
[00:39:00] chacon: my recordings look fine.
[00:39:00] abarbaccia: LedHed, i have to disagree
[00:39:00] Chutt: there's screen tearing?
[00:39:00] Chutt: interlace issues?
[00:39:00] jono: is there any videos online of mythtv in action?
[00:40:00] LedHed: Chutt, I have had in the past. Tearing is resolved now...
[00:40:00] Chutt: jitter, sure, if you have a less capable video card, but you shouldn't _ever_ get tearing or interlacing
[00:40:00] chacon: but since its like a tivo and it has to buffer the incoming video there is always a bit of delay..
[00:40:00] chacon: like when chaniing channels
[00:40:00] Tanthrix: Jono: You have to see one n person. YOu can't watch a video of a video..
[00:40:00] abarbaccia: Tanthrix, someone could try to send him a clip of their recordings
[00:40:00] chacon: haha
[00:40:00] abarbaccia: jono, are you goign with HD or SD?
[00:40:00] chacon: you can connect to my stream
[00:40:00] jono: abarbaccia, whatever skytv is
[00:40:00] chacon: no sound tho..
[00:40:00] Tanthrix: Yes, but unless he has a video card setup to play it back on his TV, he's not going to know what it's like..
[00:41:00] chacon: skytv? isnt that UK ??
[00:41:00] jono: chacon, cool, where do I connect?
[00:41:00] jono: chacon, yes
[00:41:00] LedHed: Chutt, its hard to describe. But when I watch the exact same content on my ReplayTV. The is a big difference...
[00:41:00] Chutt: video problems aren't hard to describe
[00:41:00] jono: anyone here in the uk?
[00:42:00] SqWaw: Okay, so i've got some skippy video... about every second it like pauses for a tenth of a second... any ideas?
[00:42:00] LedHed: Chutt, the best way I can describe it is lag with slight jitter...
[00:42:00] banyan: You will theoretically see less quality in the output.
[00:43:00] Chutt: lag?
[00:43:00] jono: is xmltv used for the tv listings?
[00:43:00] Chutt: have you measured the amount of jitter?
[00:43:00] chacon: http://echacon.dyndns.org:8001/
[00:43:00] banyan: From the system versus from live TV. I will say that the main place I see this is that the captured video exaggerates noise in the input.
[00:43:00] LedHed: Chutt, I dont have the problems with DVD rips played through Myth
[00:43:00] chacon: paste that into a media player
[00:43:00] chacon: like mplayer
[00:43:00] LedHed: Chutt, how?
[00:43:00] SqWaw: like "." = playing and "|" = pause, so then it'd be like: ....|....|....|....|....|....|...
[00:43:00] SqWaw: etc.
[00:43:00] chacon: windows media oplayer may die
[00:43:00] Chutt: uh, -verbose playback
[00:43:00] h1ro (i=nobody@cpc1-reig1-6-0-cust39.hers.cable.ntl.com) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[00:44:00] Chutt: are you using the opengl vsync stuff?
[00:44:00] LedHed: never tried it...
[00:44:00] jono: connecting
[00:44:00] jono: I see it
[00:44:00] LedHed: I had trouble with the OGL vsync. so I disabled it.
[00:44:00] jono: can you flick through some mythtv features
[00:44:00] banyan: Practically speaking, can a person expect to watch TV remotely over a WAN?
[00:44:00] chacon: flick?
[00:44:00] banyan: with SSL?
[00:44:00] LedHed: jono, go to the mythtv.org site
[00:44:00] chacon: sure why not
[00:44:00] Chutt: so, you're complaining about jitter, and you've disabled the best way to get jitter free video
[00:45:00] Chutt: that's wonderful
[00:45:00] chacon: i was just watching my stream
[00:45:00] jono: chacon, use the features, like the tv guide
[00:45:00] chacon: some slowdowns
[00:45:00] banyan: I'm just thinking that the bandwidth you get varies from moment to moment.
[00:45:00] chacon: not bad tho
[00:45:00] jono: hmmm it keeps buffering
[00:45:00] chacon: i mostly use the web guide
[00:45:00] LedHed: Chutt, its more than just jutter. And I tried the OGL VSync. it didnt change anything on 1 frontend and I couldnt get it to compile on the other....
[00:45:00] chacon: not the actual on screen guide
[00:45:00] jono: oh right
[00:46:00] Chutt: if it didn't change anything, it didn't work
[00:46:00] jono: can you turn on the screen guide
[00:46:00] banyan: Does remote viewing on a Windows PC require any extra setup on the backend?
[00:46:00] Chutt: ledhed, sounds like you can't even explain what you're bitching about
[00:46:00] chacon: HAHA
[00:46:00] LedHed: i wasnt bitching
[00:46:00] Chutt: yes, you were
[00:46:00] LedHed: no need to get your feelings hurt...
[00:46:00] Chutt: you were telling people that the picture quality is worse than other stuff
[00:46:00] Chutt: and you don't even have the stuff enabled to make it better
[00:46:00] LedHed: it is worse than my ReplayTV
[00:47:00] chacon: most of the time i watch TV from my laptop OS X has a mythtv frontend app
[00:47:00] jono: oh right
[00:47:00] Chutt: because you have the stuff turned off to make it look nicer
[00:47:00] LedHed: I'll try the OGL VSync and get back to you...
[00:47:00] jono: is xmltv used for the tv listings?
[00:47:00] Chutt: that's one option
[00:48:00] LedHed: I doubt that thats it, because I dont have the problems with DVD's
[00:48:00] jono: hmmm
[00:48:00] Chutt: choice of deinterlacing algorithm and if you use a denoising filter will also have an impact
[00:48:00] chacon: ...
[00:48:00] LedHed: I have best results with de-interlacing disabled, and using the nVidia filter
[00:49:00] jono: how does surround sound work with mythtv, can I still use my surround sound system?
[00:49:00] LedHed: jono, yes
[00:49:00] Chutt: the 'nvidia filter'?
[00:49:00] LedHed: in nvsettings
[00:49:00] Chutt: the flicker filter?
[00:49:00] LedHed: ya
[00:49:00] Chutt: ok, no wonder
[00:49:00] Chutt: do you even know what that does?
[00:50:00] LedHed: it blurs it to disguise the interlacing
[00:50:00] Chutt: it drops your tv out resolution quite a bit, and lowers the framerate
[00:50:00] Chutt: it doesn't 'blur' anything
[00:50:00] jono: LedHed, do I need a special sound card or anything?
[00:50:00] LedHed: jono, anything that can output 5.1
[00:51:00] jono: LedHed, does a 5.1 card have the white and red photo outputs?
[00:51:00] LedHed: no usually an optical out
[00:51:00] jono: I am not bothered about having a card that I plug all my speakers into, just a card that I can plug into my surround seperate
[00:52:00] chacon (n=chacon@c-24-4-168-45.hsd1.ca.comcast.net) has left #mythtv-users
[00:52:00] LedHed: jono, the SB audigy has optical 5.1 output
[00:52:00] Chutt: it also has a line out, which you can hook up to a stereo
[00:52:00] Chutt: since if you're just recording analog tv, all you need is prologic
[00:52:00] jono: my surround box only takes in two phonos – one red and one white
[00:53:00] jono: Chutt, my tv is digital tv
[00:53:00] LedHed: Chutt, just curious, can you describe your TV-out settings?
[00:53:00] Chutt: flicker filter off, overscan at 240 or so
[00:53:00] Chutt: when i was using the tv out, at least
[00:53:00] Chutt: i haven't used that in almost a year now
[00:54:00] LedHed: did you use deinterlacing?
[00:54:00] Chutt: of course
[00:54:00] jono: oh the pvr-350 includes a remote control?
[00:54:00] LedHed: what card did you tv-out from?
[00:55:00] SqWaw: Anyone here have a 40in Sony....? If so... Wanna give me your xorg.conf?
[00:55:00] Chutt: a 5200
[00:55:00] LedHed: jono, many of the PVR-x50 come with remotes
[00:55:00] nuonguy: I'm gonna put in a plug for an alternative to the remote control: the mediapilot: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.pr . . . ct_Id=196807
[00:55:00] Chutt: heh, that's rather cumbersome
[00:56:00] jono: LedHed, are the remotes any good?
[00:56:00] LedHed: Chutt, thanks, I'll try the OpenGL VSync again.. Thanks...
[00:56:00] Chutt: and turn the flicker filter waaay down
[00:56:00] LedHed: jono, no
[00:56:00] Chutt: if not off
[00:56:00] LedHed: I havent always used the flicker filter. just rescently....
[00:56:00] Chutt: ideally, it'd be on in the menus, and completely off during video playback
[00:57:00] nuonguy: Chutt: You might be right about cumbersome: my mythtv setup isn't finished yet.
[00:57:00] LedHed: jono, look at a ReplayTV or Tivo remote. they work well
[00:57:00] nuonguy: But, I really want only one remote control
[00:58:00] Chutt: my new harmony 880 works pretty nicely =)
[00:58:00] Chutt: even has settings for the hauppauge remotes

[01:02:00] soi-disant: can I use my tivo remote with lirc?
[01:02:00] banyan: chacon: what are the requirements for getting the remote playback to work? Does the remote PC just have to be able to access the required ports on the backend?
[01:02:00] LedHed: I cant spent $250 on a remote. I throw them at the TV too much....
[01:03:00] Krazylegz: "Television, a medium. So called because it is neither rare nor well done." — Ernie Kovacs
[01:03:00] banyan: soi, sure, if your computer has an lirc-compatible receiver that works with the Tivo remote.
[01:03:00] LedHed: soi-disant, just build the Homebrew LIRC Serial reciever. cost about $12
[01:03:00] jono: so can I map the remote buttons so I can control different bits of mythtv with the same remote – such as control the music bit, the tv channels and the dvd player?
[01:04:00] soi-disant: hmm... so the snapstream remote, reciever and the hauppauge ir receiver will not?
[01:04:00] Nutssh (i=foobar@205.196.182.42) Quit ("Client exiting")
[01:04:00] LedHed: you can map some buttons. If you want complete control. Get the ReplayTV remote. Its a JP1 remote.
[01:04:00] LedHed: you can reprogram the remote itself.
[01:05:00] jono: right
[01:05:00] LedHed: soi-disant, I dont think you can use the Tivo remote with the hauppauge IR Recievers...
[01:06:00] jono: do I use lirc with the hauppauge control?

[01:07:00] jono: right
[01:07:00] jono: does the dvd ripping and playing work ok in mythtv?
[01:08:00] jono: sorry for all the questions, you guys are really helping :)
[01:08:00] LedHed: I only use my MythTV as a DVD Jukebox, its that good.
[01:09:00] LedHed: sometimes the kids record cartoons also. but 95% DVD stuff
[01:09:00] jono: you ripped all your dvds?
[01:09:00] LedHed: no comment
[01:09:00] jono: heh
[01:10:00] jnc: how do i know if lirc is working
[01:10:00] banyan: LedHed, have you built an IR transmitter by any chance?
[01:10:00] jnc: i had 'irrecord' operational once
[01:10:00] jono: I assume some pretty big hard disks are needed

[01:10:00] jnc: i don't know as i have never made it work
[01:10:00] soi-disant: if not, it's probably not working
[01:10:00] banyan: I have a digital box that the cable company won't let me the use the serial port on. So I was considering building or buying an IR transmitter.
[01:10:00] LedHed: jnc, run irw
[01:10:00] jnc: LedHed: oh. irw runs and then quits. that's it
[01:11:00] jnc: i'm running it from an xterm
[01:11:00] jnc: if i try to run it again, it fails
[01:11:00] jnc: am i doing something bad?
[01:11:00] banyan: I take it the usual IR dongles that people buy to communicate with laptops and palm pilots won't do the trick as an IR transmitter...
[01:11:00] LedHed: jnc, then something is wrong. do you have a lircd.conf file?
[01:11:00] jono: can you get a infrared joystick for mythgame?

[01:12:00] jnc: LedHed: yep. everything looks about correct, i had to hack the debian source package to enable the lirc_atiusb module, and that's all loaded. irrecord works
[01:12:00] jnc: LedHed: i can run irrecord and it responds to the remote
[01:12:00] LedHed: but irw crashes?
[01:12:00] jnc: apparently so
[01:12:00] LedHed: strange.
[01:12:00] LedHed: well if irrecord is working then lirc is working..

[01:16:00] godsmoke_: well, have you verified that it's the card, and not the signal, procyon ?

[01:17:00] godsmoke_: JeffH_: mythtv is just output — plug it into anything you want
[01:17:00] procyon: but it also can be mplayer dropping frames
[01:17:00] godsmoke_: procyon: well ... differentiate the two

[01:35:00] godsmoke: banyan: there's no configuration required ...
[01:35:00] godsmoke: the internet is a network
[01:35:00] godsmoke: just like your lan
[01:35:00] LedHed: banyan, you'd need a very descent connection
[01:35:00] banyan: So nothing specifically to mythbackend, just open up mysql and a port for mythbackend?
[01:35:00] hadees: banyan, the problem is however you might not get a good stream because the files are so large
[01:36:00] hadees: you need to transcode them to something that can be streamed
[01:36:00] banyan: yeah, LedHed, I was wondering about that!
[01:36:00] fatmatt: do you need mysql? just the mythbackend port I thought
[01:36:00] godsmoke: well, obviously this is not gonna work on some crappy residential quality connection
[01:36:00] banyan: Oh, maybe so.
[01:36:00] LedHed: atleast 5+mbit connection
[01:37:00] hadees: godsmoke, it could if the files were transcoded to something small enough to stream
[01:37:00] banyan: I remember seeing listserv messages about wireless being too slow until 802.11g came out.
[01:37:00] godsmoke: that's because 802.11b is not actually 11Mbps
[01:37:00] fatmatt: what if there was a master backend on the internet and locally you had slave backends? the Master could manage a group of backends, the recordings transcoded to something smaller
[01:37:00] godsmoke: in fact, even under optimal wireless conditions, you can't expect more than 20Mbps of actual throughput with G
[01:37:00] LedHed: I run 1 frontend off an 802.11g AP. But thats it. If I try to run the second one it chops

[01:38:00] burly: is there a list of commands for mythtv's lircrc file somewhere?
[01:38:00] fatmatt: theres an option for slave backends
[01:38:00] hadees: banyan, try videolan
[01:38:00] burly: the example file uses irxevent, which I am not using
[01:38:00] LedHed: banyan, the files are gonna be like 1gig per hour of content
[01:39:00] banyan: And that's not at full ntsc res either.
[01:39:00] burly: and there doesn't seem to be a complete listing of "config" values that mythtv will accept
[01:39:00] LedHed: burly, i think its called mythkeys.txt
[01:39:00] hadees: videolan is going to be your best bet
[01:39:00] banyan: videolan, that's extra packages to enable this sort of thing?
[01:39:00] burly: LedHed: where might that be found? google and locate/find turn up nothing
[01:39:00] hadees: no its a client and a streamer
[01:40:00] hadees: you would need to run videolan on the backend
[01:40:00] hadees: and on the frontend
[01:40:00] hadees: but it can transcode on the fly
[01:40:00] banyan: I may have to check into that. I travel at times and I hate to have 40 or 50 shows waiting for me.
[01:40:00] banyan: can it transcode nuvs on the fly?
[01:40:00] godsmoke: dude
[01:40:00] LedHed: burly, http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/keys.txt
[01:40:00] godsmoke: to get real-time video

[01:41:00] godsmoke: more likely 384 – 512
[01:41:00] banyan: And if transcoding on the fly is possible, then what the hell is wrong with nuvexport?
[01:41:00] burly: sweet, thanks LedHed
[01:41:00] LedHed: no prob
[01:41:00] hadees: banyan, what do you mean?

[01:41:00] godsmoke: 384

[01:42:00] godsmoke: you need a -real- connection

[01:43:00] godsmoke: why would a PSP improve the quality of video?
[01:43:00] LedHed: well if you can encode mpeg 2 at 320x240 at low settings it wouldnt be that bad....
[01:43:00] godsmoke: dude
[01:43:00] godsmoke: to 200 Kbps?
[01:43:00] godsmoke: haha
[01:43:00] godsmoke: try it
[01:44:00] hadees: godsmoke, it wouldn't but the screen is smaller
[01:44:00] godsmoke: hadees: that has nothing to do with anything
[01:44:00] hadees: godsmoke, but the quality could be higher just a smaller screen size
[01:44:00] godsmoke: no
[01:45:00] godsmoke: it's impossible to improve quality that way
[01:45:00] godsmoke: it simply make it look like it's higher quality — it isn't

[03:20:00] xris: well, it also depends on your tv. many tv's just have a dvi input.
[03:20:00] godsmoke: HOWEVER .. I'm looking to see if people are doing it with anything else I didn't find in my research
[03:20:00] godsmoke: yes, this is a dvi input
[03:20:00] xris: well, I'm sure someone else will pipe up eventually.
[03:21:00] godsmoke: I plan on that — so why are you trying to solve my problems?

[03:21:00] xris: and there are a LOT of clueless people who stop by here, and I didn't know if you were one of them or not.
[03:26:00] godsmoke: while I'm asking for people with hardware — is anyone using (or has tested) the Scientific Atlanta 3250's firewire port? — if so, what resolution are you getting out of it, I've heard reports that it's 720p ... but nothing solid
[03:27:00] xris: the cable box?
[03:27:00] godsmoke: yes
[03:27:00] xris: legally, the cable companies are only required to provide 480p
[03:27:00] godsmoke: again, here you are answering things that have nothing to do with my question
[03:27:00] godsmoke: why insist on that?

[03:28:00] xris: you asked about firewire
[03:28:00] godsmoke: yes, I'm fully aware of that
[03:28:00] xris: I answered about firewire
[03:29:00] godsmoke: this is about the capability of the unit, not the cable company

[03:29:00] godsmoke: the question is, does the box step it down to 780p for the firewire output
[03:30:00] xris: and like I said, the cable company is unlikely to let it give you ANYTHING more than 480p.
[03:30:00] godsmoke: but this is not the cable company's decision
[03:30:00] godsmoke: it's already a 1080i signal when it gets to the box
[03:30:00] xris: discussion of anything else is talking about hacking a box that you do not own, in violation of the dmca, which is not allowed here.
[03:30:00] godsmoke: the question is about the firewire chip
[03:30:00] godsmoke: no, I'm not hacking anything
[03:31:00] godsmoke: the box comes with firewire — I'm asking about its capabilities
[03:31:00] xris: AGAIN... the firewire port on the box is provided ONLY to comply with the FCC's regulation that cable companies provide a digital SD (not HD) stream to their HD customers.
[03:31:00] xris: 720p is HD, thus... cable company won't provide it.

[08:42:00] nuonguy: what's msp3400?
[08:42:00] thechris: yeah
[08:42:00] thechris: msp3400 is apparently the sound module for the tuner

[09:43:00] thechris: it kept complaing that i didn't have qt
[09:43:00] thechris: no idea why it didn't resolve the dependency
[09:43:00] naitram: i keep having to install different -dev stuff...wish it would just do it automatically for me. think i'm forcing my way through it though
[09:43:00] thechris: yeah
[09:44:00] thechris: this sound things pissing me off
[09:44:00] naitram: i had a wierd thing going on with gentoo, where i'd get everything totally completely done, and it would start segfaulting on me
[09:44:00] thechris: that happens to me too
[09:44:00] thechris: stupid ASUS mobo
[09:44:00] naitram: did it after two complete installs from scratch
[09:44:00] naitram: so i threw in the towel and went to debian. kinda wishing i hadn't. i miss gentoo
[09:44:00] thechris: i have no idea what it wants me to do
[09:44:00] thechris: an i hate OSS
[09:44:00] naitram: *reads back over what you've said is going on*
[09:45:00] thechris: i've now copied the msp3400.o from the ivtv driver that i compiled manually
[09:45:00] thechris: and still no dice
[09:45:00] thechris: i may just give up on it
[09:46:00] thechris: the 500MCE is moving to a different computer this weekend
[09:46:00] thechris: but with my luck i'll have the same issues.
[09:46:00] naitram: if it helps, you're not the only one
[09:46:00] naitram: just in general, can't say about the sound issue
[09:47:00] thechris: i'm wondering if some setting is muted
[09:47:00] thechris: or if OSS is messing up
[09:47:00] levolap_ (n=levolap@217.110.171.158) Quit ("bbl")
[09:47:00] thechris: if mythTV used ALSA, i wouldn't need all these PCI cards
[09:47:00] naitram: why are you using oss instead of alsa?
[09:47:00] naitram: ahh
[09:48:00] Russ (i=user@ip70-190-169-162.ph.ph.cox.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[09:48:00] thechris: as it stands my OSS emulation in ALSA doesn't work
[09:48:00] naitram: great, now you're making me wonder why my sound works at all
[09:48:00] Russ: I've noticed that along the the episode name and description, I have episode numbers in my database
[09:48:00] Russ: can this be used to sort episodes by season and episode in the gui, instead of by record date?
[09:48:00] thechris: and any attempt to get OSS + ALSA just breaks both
[09:49:00] naitram: chris: why do you think that it has no direct support for alsa?
[09:49:00] thechris: it says so
[09:49:00] thechris: violently
[09:49:00] thechris: pretty much only disable OSS on windows frontend. otherwise no sound for you.
[09:49:00] naitram: # Sound Output Support
[09:49:00] naitram: OSS support yes
[09:49:00] naitram: ALSA support yes
[09:50:00] thechris: yeah, trying ALSA didn't work
[09:50:00] thechris: maybe there's an update
[09:50:00] naitram: has worked okay for me so far
[09:50:00] naitram: you doing this from the ebuild?
[09:50:00] thechris: yeah
[09:50:00] naitram: using alsa in your use flags?
[09:50:00] naitram: do emerge -pv mythtv
[09:51:00] naitram: it'll tell you what flags are specifically included and excluded
[09:51:00] thechris: yeah. i've tried it with -oss +alsa
[09:51:00] naitram: not that i know if this is really going to fix the problem, just the first thing that comes to mind
[09:51:00] thechris: and it complained
[09:51:00] thechris: trying it with +alsa +oss just gives me OSS
[09:52:00] naitram: what happens if you extract the tarball and do a ./configure
[09:52:00] thechris: which one
[09:52:00] thechris: mythtv?
[09:52:00] naitram: mythtv's
[09:53:00] thechris: it says alsa is supported
[09:53:00] thechris: but no one seems to know how to switch from OSS
[09:53:00] naitram: but during the compile in the ebuild it throws out complaints?
[09:53:00] naitram: that's odd...
[09:53:00] thechris: no
[09:54:00] thechris: when i run mythtv
[09:55:00] thechris: still debating if i should use gentoo or debian or something else for the PVR
[09:55:00] naitram: what exactly is the error it's giving you?
[09:55:00] thechris: i'm recompiling
[09:55:00] thechris: without OSS
[09:56:00] thechris: hmm i think PORTAGE_NICENESS is still 19
[09:56:00] thechris: this may take a bit
[09:57:00] naitram: i'm attempting to recompile too
[09:57:00] naitram: kinda annoying "lets use a binary distro!" and now i gotta recompile since debian's so anal about things it won't include
[09:57:00] naitram: like transcode support
[09:58:00] thechris: yeah
[09:59:00] thechris: and i really like the USE stuff from gentoo
[09:59:00] thechris: apt-get install k3b gives you a non-functional k3b...
[09:59:00] thechris: you have to go back and apt-get cdrdao
[09:59:00] naitram: yeah
[09:59:00] naitram: been doing that all day for myth
[10:00:00] naitram: now i get to find where pespacket comes from
[10:00:00] naitram: and how to get it, since it's undeclared. wheee
[10:01:00] thechris: hmm. nice 19 gcc is kinda slow
[10:01:00] naitram: not likely to make it much slower...
[10:03:00] thechris: can't wait for my new mobo to get in

[21:23:00] GreyFoxx: whyz: as long as you can read/write the info fast enough to the drives (or over the network) I would imagine so
[21:24:00] whyz: i guess so too.. i'm thinking of building a diskless thin client running mythtv as a local app.. and as all gfx data is handled by the card, i can't see the problem..
[21:24:00] whyz: would be awesome, have a completely noiseless pvr :)
