[00:00:00] Raven_301: hadees: Hey that M-audio stuff looks great :)
[00:00:00] Raven_301: not cheap
[00:01:00] xris: gf: you mean the -q option?
[00:01:00] gf: is that it?
[00:01:00] gf: lemme try it
[00:02:00] gf: wtf
[00:02:00] gf: i cant edit the command
[00:02:00] gf: or even quit mythtv
[00:02:00] gf: the options are grayed out
[00:02:00] xris: -q option tells xine to quit when the video finishes
[00:02:00] gf: well thats great
[00:03:00] gf: but right now i cant even input that line
[00:03:00] gf: or quit out of myth
[00:03:00] kormoc: so kill mythfrontend
[00:04:00] gf: i did a ctrl+alt+backspace
[00:04:00] gf: how do u get rid of that screen that comes up too that has all the xine options
[00:04:00] kormoc: easy answer, reboot
[00:04:00] gf: :)
[00:06:00] xris: gf: usually, one would click the close box with the mouse.
[00:06:00] gf: wait i already have -pfhq --no-splash
[00:06:00] gf: and when i hit stop on my remote i get the xine logo screen
[00:06:00] cochi is now known as cochi|away
[00:07:00] kormoc: cause you stopped playback.
[00:07:00] kormoc: makes sense.
[00:07:00] gf: is it possible to kill it via the remote?
[00:07:00] kormoc: sure, tell xine to quit
[00:08:00] dhofstra: I use xine -pfh -D

[02:21:00] opopanax_gentoo: i finally got spdif working properly in mythtv! well, almost... if i start out on a dolby-digital channel, it works and sounds great. when i go back to an analog channel, that works as well. but as soon as i switch back again to the digital channel, i get "Audio Buffer Overflow; Audio data lost!" over and over again. only way to solve it is to exit the viewer and hit "watch tv" again. not sure if it's an mplayer
[02:21:00] opopanax_gentoo: bug, or what...mplayer treats the whole thing as a stream, right, if i'm dealing with firewire?

[02:44:00] tzanger: irw sees the button presses so I know the remote itself and detector (through pvr350) are working
[02:45:00] tzanger: but mythfrontend isn't seeing it and I see no configuration options in mythtv-setup to tell it what to look for, and I don't seem to be seeing any hits on looking at ~/.mythtv/lircrc

[02:46:00] lilo: where would I find recommendations for what hardware to buy to use with mythtv?
[02:47:00] dhofstra_: tzanger if native lirc is builtin (should be) you would use ~/.mythtv/lircrc , if you want to use irxevent, you should use ~/.lircrc There are samples of both styles in the /configfiles dir of the myth tarball
[02:47:00] tzanger: dhofstra_: hmm that's what I thought ... I'll screw around some more with strace to see what it's hitting up
[02:47:00] dhofstra_: of course, using irxevent, you need to actually run irxevent to pass the keystrokes
[02:47:00] tzanger: dhofstra_: well yes.  :-)
[02:48:00] dhofstra_: hey, dont laugh, 2 nights ago that was someone's problem
[02:48:00] tzanger: irxevent is reading ~/.lircrc just fine but the command file says (for example) Ok goes to space bar for CurrentWindow
[02:48:00] tzanger: and that's not even working
[02:49:00] mchou: lilo: are you being serious or is this a bot? :)
[02:49:00] dhofstra_: hrm, If irxevent is running, and you have a proper ~/.lircrc you should even see the space key or whatever in the terminal window
[02:49:00] tzanger: no lilo runs freenode
[02:49:00] tzanger: hmm let me try that then :-)
[02:49:00] ** lilo looks at mchou **
[02:49:00] lilo: mchou: uh, why would I be a bot, again? 8)
[02:50:00] tzanger: hmm nope I'm not using that
[02:50:00] tzanger: er nope that's not working
[02:50:00] mchou: lilo: just making sure it's not a practical joke.
[02:50:00] tzanger: but I read on the irxevent man page that xterm can be bitchy about accepting that
[02:50:00] lilo: mchou: hmmm, okay
[02:50:00] lilo: mchou: if I'm a bot, I'm pretty well-written
[02:50:00] dhofstra_: xterm usually will produce some alien characters at least. also kwrite or something will show the characters passing
[02:51:00] mchou: lilo: so what is your definition of "good HW?"
[02:51:00] tzanger: mind you the xterm cursor is an outline which also seems to indicate to me it's not focused
[02:52:00] butabi: is there a collection of available osd themes out there somewhere? :)
[02:52:00] mchou: lilo: or more appropriately, what sources are you likely to record?
[02:52:00] dhofstra_: lilo: pretty much any newer hardware will do fine. If you want the best experience, you might consider using the Hauppauge PVR cards (like the 250) as they do all the mpeg encoding right on the card itself. High Def is also an option with PCHDTV3000 and one other one I cant remember right now. High Def will require a 2.5Ghz processor, however.
[02:52:00] lilo: mchou: I'm not presently using mythtv....so I *have* no definition of good hardware, other than something that's well-supported, reasonably low-overhead and flexible
[02:52:00] tzanger: lilo: I *really* like the PVR350
[02:53:00] lilo: mchou: I'm looking for something with a TV out, presently analog, and a digital out would probably be nice too
[02:53:00] lilo: tzanger: ah, okay
[02:53:00] ** lilo looks up the PVR350 **
[02:53:00] tzanger: I really only use it for the video out though, I should see what a good AGP video card with a good X driver support for xv and what not can do to too
[02:53:00] lilo: tzanger: (thanks)
[02:53:00] lilo: tzanger: well, we have one main box here and people use it all the time, so probably I need the TV out
[02:53:00] tzanger: lilo: PVR350 = Hauppage card, hardware MPEG2 encode and decode = very little CPU use for encode/decode... bleeding edge drivers give you Xv support with the ivtv fb X driver for even lower CPU use for mplayer and so on
[02:53:00] lilo: tzanger: I guess it'd be nice to be able to watch two things at once
[02:54:00] lilo: tzanger: *nod*
[02:54:00] tzanger: lilo: :-)
[02:54:00] lilo: so the 350 has the TV out
[02:54:00] mchou: lilo: if you want component: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133143
[02:54:00] lilo: right out of the mpeg-2 converter
[02:54:00] dhofstra_: Good Myth System = Large Hard Drive, Nvidia Graphics Card, PVR 250, well supported sound card of your choice, and plenty of time till you get to know it all
[02:55:00] lilo: any compatibility issues with amd64?
[02:55:00] mchou: lilo: if component is not a requirement then just get a generic MX4000 or better....
[02:55:00] tzanger: damn
[02:55:00] tzanger: restarted Xorg restarted irxevent and xterm (black cursor now) still no output
[02:55:00] tzanger: dammit
[02:56:00] tzanger: yeah I might just get an older nvidia card (need good tv out, not good 3d :-))
[02:56:00] dhofstra_: Also a good choice for component is VGA-->component transcoder like Audio Authority A960
[02:56:00] mchou: lilo: I suggest i586 (SW) fro the time being :)
[02:56:00] mchou: for*
[02:56:00] lilo: is there any way to get a clue whether my local cable company encrypts digital cable, short of getting it installed?
[02:56:00] dhofstra_: mx4000 or 5200 are both great choices
[02:56:00] tzanger: begin
[02:56:00] tzanger: prog = irxevent
[02:56:00] tzanger: button = OK
[02:56:00] tzanger: config = Key Space CurrentWindow
[02:56:00] tzanger: end
[02:56:00] lilo: mchou: *nod*
[02:56:00] tzanger: that looks fine does it not?
[02:56:00] lilo: dhofstra_: at this point I'm mostly looking for TV out
[02:56:00] tzanger: lilo: not sure, just ask?
[02:56:00] dhofstra_: both cards do tv out well
[02:57:00] mchou: lilo: what kind of tv you got?
[02:57:00] lilo: dhofstra_: why nvidia?
[02:57:00] lilo: mchou: boring analog
[02:57:00] tzanger: lilo: nvidia has good linux support
[02:57:00] tzanger: ATI less so
[02:57:00] lilo: dhofstra_: (have had problems with the X drivers)
[02:57:00] dhofstra_: best linux support for almost all of their cards
[02:57:00] splat1 is now known as splAt1
[02:57:00] mchou: lilo: then you dont need anything fancy.....
[02:57:00] tzanger: I wonder how good the X support is for the onboard video, I could always use a scan converter to go from VGA -> composite
[02:58:00] lilo: dhofstra_: hmmm, I've had problems with nvidia, the xorg people recommended several radeon chipsets
[02:58:00] dhofstra_: (probably newer more expensive chipsets)
[02:58:00] dhofstra_: I have had wonderful experiences with nvidia's drivers
[02:58:00] mchou: lilo: really?? Who are these ppl? :)
[02:58:00] tzanger: read(4, "00000000000017e5 00 Ok hauppauge"..., 100) = 37
[02:58:00] tzanger: write(3, "+\1\1\0", 4) = 4
[02:58:00] tzanger: irxevent is definitely catching and sending
[02:59:00] tzanger: my xorg.conf might be blocking I suppose
[02:59:00] mchou: if you go ati you are in a world of hurt.
[02:59:00] dhofstra_: agreed
[02:59:00] tzanger: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 65x/M650/740 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter
[02:59:00] tzanger: woo go SIS!
[02:59:00] tzanger: :-)
[02:59:00] mchou: nope, dont go SIS
[02:59:00] tzanger: I'm joking
[02:59:00] tzanger: that's the onboard I'm not using
[02:59:00] mchou: shared memory => memory bandwidth issues.
[03:00:00] tzanger: mchou: this PC's *only* doing myth
[03:00:00] tzanger: with no encode
[03:00:00] tzanger: just mplayer
[03:00:00] mchou: tzanger: so??
[03:00:00] tzanger: mchou: memory bandwidth with DDR isn't THAT big an issue on a single-use system
[03:00:00] mchou: you will still have memory bandwidth issues
[03:00:00] tzanger: mchou: really...
[03:00:00] mchou: tzanger: BS

[04:15:00] _WildCard: when i shrunk it all down just to see if i could get the rest of the video it just shrunk the 80%
[04:15:00] firefly2442: if I just want to record shows, the video card doesn't matter right? everything would just be software/hardware based encoding
[04:17:00] _WildCard: so you think it'd still be my x config?

[04:22:00] _WildCard: hmmm ok. i'll give it a go and see what happens. but if i were running it remotely and it were still cutting it off... would that be more of an ivtv issue?

[07:15:00] xris: fun. heh.
[07:15:00] Beirdo: go-karting...
[07:15:00] xris: ahh. real fun.
[07:15:00] Beirdo: my arms are SO sore
[07:15:00] Beirdo: 40–50km/h carts
[07:15:00] Beirdo: on a tight course on concrete
[07:15:00] Beirdo: for about 20min flat out :)
[07:15:00] Beirdo: hehe
[07:15:00] Beirdo: fun
[07:16:00] Beirdo: steering just KILLS your arms after a while
[07:16:00] ** xris just realized that his vitamix has a 2hp 1350 watt motor. **
[07:16:00] Beirdo: then we had a BBQ at the general manager's house
[07:16:00] Beirdo: right on Lake Ontario
[07:16:00] xris: cool
[07:17:00] Beirdo: gorgeous place
[07:17:00] xris: we're supposed to have something like that eventually.. party on a lake in the area.
[07:18:00] ol_schoola: us, too — boss asked to come, we told him to kiss off :)
[07:18:00] xris: we like our boss.
[07:18:00] xris: and in kormoc's case, I *am* the boss (scary)...
[07:19:00] ol_schoola: we like him too, just in small doses
[07:19:00] CCFL_Man: any mythtv talk?
[07:19:00] xris: CCFL_Man: got a question?
[07:19:00] kormoc: yeah, I like my boss!
[07:19:00] xris: hmm, I'm obviously doing something wrong.. heh
[07:20:00] ol_schoola: kormoc: watch the kissing....
[07:20:00] kormoc: heh
[07:20:00] kormoc: tis true tho
[07:20:00] ol_schoola: xris: yer pl script to move dd->scan worked awesome
[07:21:00] xris: ol_schoola: cool
[07:21:00] xris: ol_schoola: you have to understand, we work in about the coolest place a programmer could hope to work.
[07:21:00] ol_schoola: just reloaded with FC4 and can't get myth to see the damn nxt2002 (a2pc card)
[07:22:00] ol_schoola: azap works great
[07:22:00] Chutt: xris, uh, i disagree
[07:22:00] Chutt: my basement is the coolest place a programmer could hope to work
[07:22:00] ol_schoola: xris: where's the coolest place?
[07:22:00] Chutt: aside from the lack of a fridge down here
[07:22:00] Beirdo: you can fix that, Chutt :)
[07:23:00] xris: Chutt: we have fridge, free food, espresso...
[07:23:00] ol_schoola: Chutt: <bzzzzt> next!
[07:23:00] Chutt: yup, but fridges are loud
[07:23:00] Chutt: i can walk upstairs for food
[07:23:00] xris: ol_schoola: btw, siliconmechanics.com
[07:23:00] CCFL_Man: xris: i was wondering what fanless thin client front ends one can use for mythtv
[07:23:00] Beirdo: ah, good point
[07:23:00] xris: CCFL_Man: most people seem to prefer epias because of their hardware acceleration for video
[07:23:00] Chutt: do you have a bigass projector 10 feet away, for those times when you feel like playing a game? =)
[07:23:00] ol_schoola: xris: nonw i member! that's a real nice thing you got going there
[07:24:00] CCFL_Man: xris: is that a small pc or a thin client?
[07:24:00] xris: Chutt: upstairs in the conference room.. though the games are plugged into the plasma in the lunchroom lately.
[07:24:00] xris: CCFL_Man: motherboard
[07:24:00] CCFL_Man: xris: ahhh
[07:24:00] xris: (and cpu)
[07:24:00] ol_schoola: i have to sigh> break-in plasmas and projos for my client <rolls eyes> it's SUCH a hassle
[07:24:00] ol_schoola: ...clients
[07:25:00] xris: you really need a "full" pc because of the cpu usage required.
[07:25:00] ** kormoc starts giggling like a school girl **
[07:25:00] kormoc: I finally got the m179 working!
[07:25:00] xris: hahaha
[07:25:00] xris: kormoc: what a PITA
[07:25:00] kormoc: yeah.
[07:25:00] kormoc: and I got the oddest look from ariel :P
[07:25:00] CCFL_Man: xris: linksys has media gateways and such, it's a damn shame none of these companies want to support mythtv
[07:26:00] Beirdo: kormoc: hehe
[07:26:00] Beirdo: nice
[07:27:00] xris: CCFL_Man: aren't those things usually just video repeaters, though?
[07:27:00] xris: but yeah, it's nice when you can get a cheap custom chipset designed specifically for one task.
[07:27:00] _WildCard: well i figured out my issue with the video all cropped crazy. so now i can move on to other issues ;). Anybody had the high-pitch whine issue? or know how to get rid of it?
[07:27:00] xris: hard to code open source for something like that, though
[07:28:00] ol_schoola: CCFL: "companies" look at myth, etal as the enemy
[07:28:00] xris: _WildCard: what card/driver version are you using?
[07:28:00] _WildCard: pvr150 and ivtv 0.3.3h i believe
[07:28:00] xris: ol_schoola: there *are* a few out there working "with" myth...
[07:28:00] xris: _WildCard: upgrade the driver?
[07:28:00] CCFL_Man: xris: yeah, those
[07:29:00] _WildCard: yea? dang... i just got it working perfectly... maybei 'll try that out tomorrow...
[07:29:00] _WildCard: but thats what usually causes it? i'll make sure and try an upgrade and see what happens
[07:29:00] ol_schoola: i heard good things (unrelated to Myth) about the roku
[07:29:00] xris: _WildCard: I'm using .3.6o and it's fine (svideo port) for my 150 mce.. haven't tried resizing, though... I do that after the fact with nuvexport.
[07:29:00] CCFL_Man: ol_schoola: yeah, because it shits on DRM and content protection, and actually lets you do what ever you want, which actually makes it the best pvr and media system available
[07:29:00] xris: _WildCard: just one of the hassles of being stuck with unstable drivers.
[07:30:00] xris: hauppauge helps out ivtv where they can, but they're bound by a stupid NDA.
[07:30:00] _WildCard: yea definatly. i'll give it a go tomorrow. i'm just glad i finally got full video AND audio to boot!
[07:30:00] _WildCard: dang NDA's... they're the devil
[07:30:00] ol_schoola: oooooh, gonna order me one .. gotta call the rep and find a distributor
[07:30:00] xris: _WildCard: yeah. *especially* when it's a "big company" wanting to help out open source development, but their chipset supplier prevents them from doing so.
[07:31:00] xris: ol_schoola: ??
[07:31:00] ol_schoola: <growls> NDA's are evil
[07:31:00] _WildCard: man thats no good.
[07:31:00] ol_schoola: i'm in the custom A/V biz — i have acces to mfgr channels
[07:31:00] _WildCard: ah at least they try. can't get em for that one
[07:31:00] CCFL_Man: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?chil . . . sitorWrapper <---this little thing here is useless, it only plays wma and mp3, and image files
[07:32:00] CCFL_Man: but, you write some firmware and port mythtv to it's chipset, it becomes one sweet ass box
[07:33:00] ol_schoola: CCFL: getting access to all the little nooks and crannies of a chipset can be like dividing by zero
[07:33:00] kormoc: now to fix myth
[07:33:00] CCFL_Man: ol_schoola: thats just as bad as NDas
[07:34:00] ol_schoola: well, NDA's are what let you get that access, if you can get the NDA, but then you can't share ....
[07:34:00] CCFL_Man: ol_schoola: but thats my dream system, a pvr thin client box that has the mythfrontend
[07:34:00] ol_schoola: to get HD+Myth requires a really thick thin-client
[07:35:00] CCFL_Man: ol_schoola: yeah, but without HD it can be done cheaply
[07:36:00] ol_schoola: one of our guys is gonna try to hack a very, very very expensive media server (which I cannot reveal in a public forum) to run work with myth at the protocol level
[07:36:00] CCFL_Man: what kind of media server?
[07:36:00] ol_schoola: one of the biggies, like I said, can't say in a public forum
[07:36:00] CCFL_Man: an expensive professional one?
[07:37:00] CCFL_Man: ahh
[07:37:00] ol_schoola: yup
[07:37:00] CCFL_Man: thats kick ass

[08:10:00] [Xander]: help please: I just updated my myth box and now the frontend refuses to connect to mysql. I know it is running, because i can manually run mysql queries against the database. the ip address is correct as well, and i have re-run the grant all on mythconverg.* stuff...
[08:11:00] Agrajag-: user/pass?
[08:11:00] [Xander]: should not have changed
[08:11:00] Agrajag-: did you upgrade mysql?
[08:11:00] Agrajag-: maybe you dont have networking enabled
[08:12:00] Agrajag-: check for what it's binding to, and that the skip-networking option isn't in your mysql config
[08:12:00] [Xander]: crap, i bet that's it. what was the file/path that had that?
[08:12:00] [Xander]: i remember setting it up, but not where the file was
[08:12:00] Agrajag-: hmm in debian it's /etc/mysql/my.cnf
[08:12:00] [Xander]: that's the file, my.cnf will locate it
[08:12:00] fatmatt: had a look at mysql, theres a change in the config file for debian at least. It's not skip networking anymore
[08:13:00] Agrajag-: yeah they make it bind to 127.0.0.1 instead
[08:13:00] [Xander]: checking
[08:13:00] fatmatt: yah
[08:14:00] [Xander]: i think the bind address is crapping me up, the skip networking is commented out, but it's bound to loopback. should i just change that to the real ip address?

[08:15:00] fatmatt: I did anyway
[08:16:00] [Xander]: you guys rock!! it's fixed. i was worried that my database was corrupt or something. didn't bother reading the changelog for the mysql updates... (i had about 50 updates that I put in all at once, and didn't pay much attention.) (stupid me)

[16:45:00] Geckofiend: FairWtns then what you need is a kdevelop guide not a Qt guide
[16:45:00] FairWtns: Beirdo: I used to think that too, but then I realized being "hardcore" isn't helpful. It's like saying "power tools are for wusses, use a wrench". Tools make jobs easier, so I can focus on code.

[16:57:00] FairWtns: I really think we need to play-down weddings in america. GreyFoxx:Yes, that's exactly it. Too many couples in america get so caught up in having a wedding they forget about the marriage.
[16:58:00] Beirdo: yeah, for me, the marriage is the important thing. the wedding is a fun formality
[16:58:00] FairWtns: Yep.
[16:58:00] Beirdo: and is more for the family than anything
[16:58:00] FairWtns: I wish I could get that thought across to her without sounding like a complete callous ass. She only hears the no-huge-wedding part.
[16:59:00] GreyFoxx: FairWtns: Honestly it's like diamonds, wedding rings and engagement rings. It's all a scam. "If he LOVES you he'd buy you a expensive ring" .... yeah right,.. "If I loved you I would put that money toward a downpayment on a house or mortgate/food"
[16:59:00] Beirdo: heh
[16:59:00] GreyFoxx: Seriously, the whole diamond rings stuff has been through a huge marketing push over the last 100 years by debeers
[16:59:00] FairWtns: GreyFoxx:Again, women are trained from birth about the marriage. There is no logic that will convince them otherwise.
[16:59:00] Beirdo: yeah, I *want* to buy a nice ring, but I like buying things for those I love
[17:00:00] Beirdo: but no f'ing way am I spending 4–6 months salary on it
[17:00:00] Beirdo: fuck you
[17:00:00] GreyFoxx: exactly
[17:00:00] FairWtns: Beirdo:Yeah, I'm going for the nice rings when the time comes. Just because I'm big on style, and something I'm going to wear for the rest of my life better look good.
[17:00:00] Beirdo: I'd rather put that towards a house
[17:00:00] Beirdo: yeah, wedding bands should be plain and wearable
[17:00:00] GreyFoxx: It would be one thing if a ring was something other than window dressing. If it actually DID something other than sit on a finger MAYBE
[17:00:00] Beirdo: I want that thing on my hand for the rest of my life :)
[17:01:00] Beirdo: but it's engagement rings that really kill you, not wedding bands
[17:01:00] GreyFoxx: I told her I wont wear a ring. Or at least not regularly. I don't like jewelery of anykind
[17:01:00] FairWtns: My brothers (new) wedding ring is platinum. It has a bunch of small diamonds ringing it. Subtle and nice. Ridiculously expensive, but hey, it does look good, and he has crazy money.
[17:01:00] Beirdo: heh
[17:01:00] Beirdo: and the diamonds will fall out eventually
[17:01:00] GreyFoxx: Beirdo: Yeah. They are the worst
[17:02:00] Beirdo: and platinum is so nice
[17:02:00] Beirdo: hehe
[17:02:00] FairWtns: Yeah, that worries me too. A friend of mine gave his girl a $7K ring. I would never let the girl out of the house.
[17:02:00] Beirdo: and so pricy
[17:02:00] GreyFoxx: It's gross
[17:02:00] FairWtns: You're wearing a compact car on your finger. Wear gloves or stay home. :)
[17:02:00] Beirdo: what's gross?
[17:03:00] Tommck: Beirdo – diamonds fall out some times, but that's what insurance is for
[17:03:00] GreyFoxx: A buddy of mine paid $8K on the ring, $14K on the vacation, 23K on the wedding... all for a couple fancy hours, a vacation and a piece of paper saying you are married... It's crazy
[17:03:00] FairWtns: Tommck:Crap I forgot about that.
[17:03:00] Beirdo: yeah, but for a ring you wear every day, having to worry about the stones... blech
[17:03:00] Beirdo: as I said.. plain band
[17:03:00] Beirdo: :)
[17:03:00] FairWtns: GreyFoxx:Actually, the paper is only like 50 bucks. :)
[17:03:00] GreyFoxx: hehe
[17:04:00] Tommck: my wife would have bitch slapped me if I didn't pony up some dinero
[17:04:00] Beirdo: hehe
[17:04:00] Beirdo: yeah well
[17:04:00] ** Beirdo is not concerned **
[17:04:00] GreyFoxx: Seriously though. What kind of foolishness is it to spent $45K on what amounts to a single day and a small vacation .... christ that's a huge downpayment on a house, car or bills
[17:04:00] NightBird (n=ma325@AC88C583.ipt.aol.com) Quit (Connection timed out)
[17:04:00] FairWtns: And let's face it, if you love the girl, you want her to have nice stuff. The problem is the compromise. I *want* to buy you nice things, but I also like food, and shelter and stuff.
[17:04:00] Beirdo: yup
[17:05:00] Tommck: FairWtns – are you foolishly squandering your money on food and heat when you could get something sparkly for your woman?
[17:05:00] Beirdo: well, I'm spending $1.7k on this vacation
[17:05:00] Beirdo: US
[17:05:00] FairWtns: Tommck:Yes, I am a silly boy.
[17:05:00] Beirdo: and that's cheap
[17:05:00] GreyFoxx: Beirdo: That's not that bad, flights are expensive.
[17:05:00] Beirdo: correction
[17:05:00] Beirdo: I *spent*
[17:05:00] Tommck: Beirdo – that's Canadian dollars, right?
[17:05:00] FairWtns: Most women I know would happily be homeless with a diamond mine on their finger than have no debt and a nice house.
[17:05:00] Beirdo: no
[17:05:00] Beirdo: USD
[17:05:00] Tommck: ok
[17:06:00] Tommck: :)
[17:06:00] Beirdo: American Airlines Vacations has great packages
[17:06:00] Beirdo: and I get 156k AAdvantage points too
[17:06:00] Beirdo: :)
[17:06:00] Beirdo: muhahaha
[17:06:00] GreyFoxx: I'm spending $1550CDN each for us to head to the Dominican Replubic for a week all inclusive
[17:06:00] Beirdo: it's worth every penny
[17:07:00] GreyFoxx: Man I have so many points in the various airline systems it's crazy
[17:07:00] Beirdo: yeah, I'm staying at a resort... like a 5min walk from her house
[17:07:00] Beirdo: well, her parents' house
[17:07:00] FairWtns: Man I need a vacation.
[17:07:00] GreyFoxx: I've got around 300,000 Air Canada aeroplan, 150,000 in continental, etc etc
[17:07:00] Beirdo: I coulda got cheaper, but further away
[17:07:00] FairWtns: Anyone know how to make "xhost +" which I use with my cygwin, permanent.
[17:08:00] GreyFoxx: Is there a .bash_profile or something you can drop it in ?
[17:08:00] Beirdo: .xinitrc or something maybe
[17:08:00] FairWtns: Of course I overlook the obvious.
[17:08:00] FairWtns: Good idea.
[17:08:00] GreyFoxx: duh yeah, since it would have to execute with X
[17:08:00] Tommck: FairWtns – you should probably specify machines :)
[17:09:00] FairWtns: Tommck:True...
[17:09:00] FairWtns: Crap, no pico/nano...gotta use vi..
[17:09:00] FairWtns: No vi either...hrm...
[17:09:00] GreyFoxx: mmmm vi
[17:10:00] Beirdo: no vi?
[17:10:00] Beirdo: haha
[17:10:00] Beirdo: how did you not install vi in cygwin?
[17:10:00] Beirdo: :)
[17:10:00] FairWtns: I'm a genious apparently..
[17:10:00] Beirdo: quite talented
[17:10:00] Tommck: did you install emacs? :)
[17:11:00] FairWtns: Tommck: Apparently not. I don't know howtf not though.
[17:12:00] Beirdo: yeah, so my time has been pretty well consumed lately
[17:12:00] Beirdo: not that I'm in any way complaining
[17:12:00] Beirdo: :)
[17:13:00] ** FairWtns resorts to using echo **
[17:14:00] Beirdo: you can just run the cygwin installer again and add vi or something
[17:14:00] FairWtns: You probably talk to your girl more than I do. We work seperate shifts and live seperately.
[17:14:00] Beirdo: you don't know the half of it
[17:14:00] Beirdo: hehe
[17:14:00] Beirdo: we live thousands of miles apart
[17:15:00] Beirdo: and my asterisk use will bear witness to the amount we talk on the phone

[17:16:00] Tommck: I know MythTV can switch video modes based on the size of the recordings now. Can it also switch when you're about to view a DVD or a "Video"
[17:16:00] Tommck: ?
[17:16:00] Beirdo: that uses external programs
[17:16:00] Tommck: I know
[17:16:00] Beirdo: they will have to do whatever switching is necessary

[19:59:00] rama_: i know that about the compiled stuff dropping in /usr/local
[20:00:00] xris: rama_: well, in debian, there is the "world" repository that contains most stuff, and then "universe" which contains stuff that's not gpl friendly, or not technically legal in the US (like mp3 support, decss, etc)
[20:00:00] xris: or so I've been told (I don't use debian distros)
[20:00:00] butabi: why is my mythtv struggling with specific channels but works great with others?
[20:00:00] rama_: xris, hm.. never used universe.. just added the repository pointed by the mythtv doc
[20:00:00] xris: likely, those missing dependencies are in universe.
[20:01:00] xris: butabi: define "struggling"
[20:01:00] butabi: choppy playback (livetv) – audio choppy -> prebuffering pause / audio buffer overflow
[20:02:00] butabi: i was suspecting it to be a special format or something, like ac3 or hdtv, however i have no knowledge about that :)
[20:02:00] rama_: ok, that's a thing to check then.. however, after fighting several hours, I wonder why it wouldn't work to add hand-compiled plugins to a mythtv installed from package.. I mean, there should be a procedure to follow to make mythtv notice about the new plugin which I'm not following.. or?
[20:03:00] Chutt: you didn't install them into the same prefix.
[20:04:00] xris: butabi: what kind of card?
[20:04:00] rama_: Chutt, makes sense, however by having ld finding it in /usr/local is no help? it must really live on the same plugins dir as the package's prefix?

[20:04:00] Chutt: yes
[20:05:00] xris: rama_: what Chutt said
[20:05:00] xris: butabi: could it be that some channels are higher def than others? it's a LOT easier to play 480p vs 720p vs 1080i, etc.
[20:05:00] butabi: xris: could be, but how do i find out?
[20:06:00] butabi: xris: but i was looking at vmstat during the "struggling" and it seemed just fine ...
[20:06:00] xris: dunno, there.. if you're playing back on a monitor, it's pretty easy to tell the difference by looking (1080i looks noticeably better than 480p, or if you're PAL, 572p or whatever it is)
[20:06:00] xris: try top next time
[20:06:00] rama_: alright, i get it.. will try a dirty symlink for now
[20:07:00] rama_: just the last doubt for now, as I didn't find doc about this: where should I find the plugins options/usage ?
