[00:00:00] dmz: i can capture mpeg by cat /dev/video0 > file.mpeg and view it fine, however when I run mythtv-setup it only sees a standard v4l device, it doesn't see the 350 mpeg encoder
[00:01:00] dmz: and other issue is i have my output going to the 350 video out working good for menus/etc, but when I run mplayer (dvd) or view channels it never seems to go anywhere. if I ssh in I can see them running with "xv" option, but nothing on the screen.
[00:01:00] topping: dmz: that setting you are looking at that it "sees"... that's a popup
[00:01:00] dmz: i'm using ivtv-0.3.7c

[00:02:00] jonK: when you run mythtv-setup it wont let you change the capture card type?
[00:02:00] dmz: topping, in the setup you mean? i can't seem to get anything
[00:02:00] jonK: v4l may just be the first entry on a list
[00:02:00] dmz: correct it won't let me change card type
[00:02:00] topping: go to that dialog in mythtv-setup
[00:02:00] dmz: no mouse and it doesn't seem to even go into that field
[00:02:00] dmz: let me try again, 1 sec
[00:02:00] topping: use the keyboard
[00:02:00] jonK: did you build myth from source?

[00:18:00] cosmo__: is it possible to make transcode hold its jobs until off-hours? Mythtv documentation seems to suggest that its only possible to run commerical flagging manually, but not re-encoding
[00:19:00] xris: cosmo__: huh? press X while watching, and it'll start a transcode

[00:33:00] dmz: ok, so i can record & play back, but it won't view on the screen if I "watch tv" or try to watch a dvd. i'm guessing it's something to do with the frame buffer output

[01:22:00] blkbearnh: Thanks juski. I've got Hauppauge 250s, so xawtv doesn't work for me (seg fault). I've got a few badly out-of-freq channels (thanks Comcast), and can't figure out a way to get finetune parameters for them
[01:23:00] juski: blkbearnh... tvtime?
[01:24:00] juski: or else it'll be a case of run mythtv-setup... go back into the frontend... back into mythtv-setup....
[01:24:00] juski: or you could alter the database by hand I guess... then change away from the channel you just adjusted & change back to it
[01:25:00] blkbearnh: I'll give it a try. Also, any idea why the preview windows for the shows has really funked-up color maps?
[01:25:00] juski: strange how there's no OSD fine-tuning..
[01:25:00] blkbearnh: What are reasonable values to change in the finetune values (how much should I change at a time?)
[01:25:00] juski: experiment ;)
[01:25:00] juski: (I don't know)
[01:26:00] blkbearnh: Yah, that's what I thought
[01:26:00] juski: you running 0.18, blkbearnh?
[01:26:00] blkbearnh: Yep
[01:26:00] juski: I think you need 0.18.2 to fix that

[01:28:00] juski: eew WinMyth?
[01:28:00] blkbearnh: Hey, my box with the big screen is a Windows box, mea culpa
[01:28:00] cochi: WinMyth = ouch
[01:28:00] juski: no offence to the guys who are working on it, but it sucks big-style
[01:28:00] blkbearnh: I suppose I could just watch the vids via Media Player and control programming with mythweb
[01:29:00] topping: juski: if it gets more people onto linux and native myth, isn't that a good thing?
[01:29:00] juski: I can see how WinMyth would get people into Linux ;)
[01:29:00] topping: my old roomie is like that
[01:29:00] blkbearnh: It does in the sense that the media server runs Linux
[01:30:00] juski: it's a good idea
[01:30:00] topping: he wants to learn linux, but not that bad... yet

[01:31:00] juski: bah credit cards :-(
[01:31:00] kevin_: hmm is it normal that a recorder half hour show is over a gig on the disk?
[01:31:00] kevin_: recorded*
[01:31:00] juski: if the bitrate is way high, yes kevin_
[01:33:00] juski: don't worry about that.. 500GB disks will be here soon ;-)
[01:34:00] topping: kevin_: set automatic transcoding after the show
[01:34:00] Krazylegz: Pffft. I'm not buying a .5TB disk. Terabytes are the tools of the DEVIL!!
[01:34:00] topping: kevin_: are you using a hauppauge card?
[01:35:00] juski: anyway I think more Window$ users are venturing into mythtv, judging by some posts I've seen on the mailing lists & forums...
[01:35:00] dougl: ok, I modprobed all the stuff successfully... err how can I check my dvb card to see if it is working?
[01:35:00] kevin_: aver 179.... same as the hauppauge 250 i'm told
[01:36:00] kevin_: i'll play with transcoding, thanks
[01:36:00] topping: kevin_: that stores the video as mpeg2, which is what the hardware on the card creates
[01:36:00] kormoc: topping, yes, it does
[01:36:00] kormoc: kevin_, what kernel are you using?
[01:36:00] juski: dougl... go to http://www.ethics-gradient.net/myth/mythdvb.html
[01:37:00] juski: dougl – you'll get some good pointers there
[01:37:00] topping: kevin_: if your codec is not real time for the particular speed of your CPU, you would want batched transcoding because it would be impossible to do so live. this is a good way to avoid such pitfalls on a general basis
[01:40:00] kevin_: i'm using the 2.6.11.12 and an athlon xp1700

[01:40:00] kevin_: yeah, i don't really have a feel for whats enough and whats not enough
[01:41:00] topping: well, they wanted to make everything as usable as possible
[01:41:00] topping: it often doesn't matter if a transcode takes several hours, since you don't often watch the show immediately
[01:41:00] topping: and if you do, you can watch the raw feed
[01:42:00] topping: which is presumably higher quality anyway
[01:42:00] dougl: juski: thanks

[01:46:00] keith: nor does plain old /
[01:46:00] keith: i mean \
[01:46:00] juski: you don't need irxevent for mythtv, keith
[01:46:00] kormoc: keith, what version of ivtv? what tuner.ko are you using?
[01:47:00] blkbearnh: Well, tvtime is evidently also not compatible with ivtv... sigh
[01:47:00] keith: juski- it runs better with irxevent for me
[01:47:00] keith: and i have no clue
[01:48:00] keith: i just wanat to know what to do for irxevent cause just plain using ~/.mythtv/lircrc caused the screen to blank out if you use the remote for more than 3 seconds
[01:48:00] dmz: hmm i've lost sound :(
[01:48:00] keith: but with irxevent i have no problem
[01:48:00] juski: you just need a lircrc file in ~/.mythtv/
[01:49:00] keith: i did, but it screws up when i use the remote- the remote works, but the screen will blank out
[01:49:00] keith: so i use irxevent instead
[01:49:00] keith: hence my asking about irxevent

[02:07:00] JazHambo: juski: exactly onboard sis. I'm paying for being cheap I guess
[02:07:00] juski: Splurge $25 on a Nvidia card
[02:08:00] juski: if the board has AGP that is
[02:08:00] swim: hehe
[02:09:00] JazHambo: juski: is it gonna be easy to tell from the box or is this gonna be one of those deals where I have to look at the damn FCC ID to find out if I've got the right thing? I must have gone through about 4 wireless cards before I found one that actually had open source drivers
[02:09:00] juski: you just need something like a Nvidia-based FX5200
[02:10:00] kevin_: nvidia mx 440 works well for me. you can find those for about 20 dollars or so
[02:10:00] JazHambo: juski: what are the chances that if I buy one of those, pop it in, plug my monitor into it and reboot it'll work right off the bat?
[02:10:00] juski: I was using an XFX MX4000 card for a while before I got my EPIA motherboard – TV out quality was sweet and CPU usage was very low playing back MPEG2

[02:11:00] kevin_: jazhambo slim to none
[02:11:00] kevin_: haha
[02:11:00] dmz: ok, so recording & playback is great; just can't watch tv or watch a dvd (doesn't seem to display anything, watching tv blanks screen but doesn't show anything, and watching dvd fires off mplayer but it never attaches to display??)??

[02:12:00] juski: "grr is that compiler not finished yet?!"
[02:12:00] juski: if knoppmyth has nvidia drivers & xvmc enabled, yes
[02:12:00] juski: the nvidia drivers only take a few minutes to install
[02:13:00] juski: and mythtv isn't too bad to compile with xvmc support
[02:13:00] fatmatt: anyone know how I pass an nvtv option to a screen (ie my tv out) from an ssh session?

[02:16:00] trans_err: can anyone shoot me a suggestion for a cheap/simple/well supported capture card?
[02:16:00] JazHambo: Well I guess the problem is really that I don't know much about drivers in linux in general. I got a deb package for the sis drivers and ran a program that I though was supposed to "install" the driver, but as far as I can tell it didn't actually do anything except download the driver and un-tgz it. There's got to be something put into XF86Config-4 to make it work... right?
[02:16:00] fatmatt: dmz isn't there a buffer setting in one of the setup screens,
[02:17:00] juski: JazHambo: http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsisvga.shtml

[02:19:00] fatmatt: yah, are you able to edit the database directly or do you go through the setup?
[02:19:00] swim: how is knoppmyth as a full desktop distro as well as a myth box distro?
[02:19:00] dmz: i can edit database. is it in the setup table?
[02:19:00] juski: trans_err... talk about the most asked question... it all depends on what your definitions of 'cheap' and 'simple' are
[02:19:00] JazHambo: juski: yah I've been puzzling over that for days... But I just noticed something after reading the 19th time... hmmm time to go fiddle
[02:20:00] fatmatt: yeah, think its buffersize, looks like its a per-host config
[02:20:00] fatmatt: settings table

[02:20:00] topping: trans_err: get a pvr-150

[02:20:00] fatmatt: although, that may be for live tv...
[02:20:00] fatmatt: nahh, thats 6gig
[02:21:00] dmz: ahh
[02:21:00] juski: trans_err... a lot of people have had success with the PVR150 card but it might not be for the faint-hearted
[02:21:00] dmz: well i'm getting playback prebuffering pauses on a remote frontend
[02:21:00] juski: infact no vid capture in Linux is for the faint hearted ;)
[02:21:00] fatmatt: hmmm, scratch that then
[02:21:00] dmz: that is the live recording buffer
[02:21:00] topping: mythtv is not for the faint hearted lol
[02:22:00] topping: but you learn a lot, and that's half the fun
[02:22:00] dmz: so any thoughts on where i can control a frontend buffer size?
[02:22:00] juski: "here be dragons"
[02:22:00] fatmatt: how the hell do I send a command to a different session,
[02:22:00] trans_err: juski: I'm familair enough-- as long as it does work and well-- I'll get it setup
[02:22:00] juski: fatmatt – I saw that once somewhere – damned if I can remember where though – would be handy

[14:21:00] Tommck: about another 1/4 is that you're asking very simple questions which could be handled with google searching
[14:21:00] Tommck: just download the RPM yourself and install it

[15:40:00] GreyFoxx: yes
[15:40:00] GreyFoxx: In that I know they are there from having edited a theme or 2
[15:40:00] directhex|work: there's some stuff i should really implement properly (e.g. an option to shutdown a combined back-frontend, a separate non-modifier quit key for use with remotes, etc), but dirty hacks are doing the job. plus patches to libmyth are a little redundant with the switch to libmythui. and on top of that, i can't be arsed to send in more patches without at least some acknowledgement – i'm sick of my patches getting ignored on oss stuff
[15:41:00] rw`: GreyFoxx, you know there is a bloack of code that adds categories and colors. This code is repeated twice in each ui.xml. If we have 10 themes we'll have 20 repetitions of the same code. My patch simply centralizes the code in only one file.
[15:41:00] GreyFoxx: Well, for the shutdown of a combo I would just add a config option to enable that ability if the user wants it. That and the change to the current if would only be a couple lines.

[15:43:00] directhex|work: it's a couple of lines, true, but it would need actual doing, then actual acceptance into svn. i've mostly done it, but there's a bug i can't be bothered to fix (some screens, e.g. leaving mythmusic settings screens needs use of the power button not the exit button), and the button is defined in the sql but not configurable anywhere
[15:43:00] MrSpiffy: no error messges to console, nothing
[15:44:00] MrSpiffy: any thoughts on where I can look for the problem?
[15:44:00] GreyFoxx: directhex|work: I think a user was working on a onscreen way to configure every key and the action is does similar to what's in mythweb. Though it's not in the main tree yet
[15:46:00] directhex|work: GreyFoxx, i just shoved in a line to register the extra event, restarted myth, went into mythweb, and it was magically there for the configurin'. i might have my reservations about how some of the code is done, but the abstraction of sql-based config is child's play
[15:46:00] GreyFoxx: heh
[15:47:00] directhex|work: actually, can someone run a quick test for me? change your exit key to ctrl-esc, then go into the mythmusic playback settings screen – then back to the home screen can you go all the way back via only the escape key, or is it some else's bug that soe settings dialogs expect the ctrl modifier

[16:03:00] CJC: what was it?
[16:04:00] MrSpiffy: I had to put the .cdserverrc file in /var/lib/mythtv
[16:04:00] MrSpiffy: not in /.mythtv
[16:04:00] MrSpiffy: damn
[16:04:00] CJC: hmm.
[16:04:00] CJC: cool... does it fill in your album art now too...?
[16:04:00] CJC: if so, would you tell me how you did it?
[16:04:00] MrSpiffy: from .15 to .18 there was a change – the mysql.txt file goes in /.mythtv BUT the .cdserverrc still goes in /var/lib/mythtv
[16:05:00] MrSpiffy: and here I thought it would be consistent
[16:05:00] MrSpiffy: sheesh
[16:05:00] MrSpiffy: no albun art CJC
[16:06:00] CJC: hmm... So, it works good for you now? Does it redo your ID3 tags for you?
[16:06:00] CJC: if you have mp3s... or is this just only for ripping cds that you're using it?
[16:08:00] MrSpiffy: both
[16:08:00] MrSpiffy: damn – another problem
[16:08:00] MrSpiffy: it works as root from ssh
[16:08:00] MrSpiffy: now to work on it as nobody form boot
[16:08:00] CJC: good idea
[16:09:00] CJC: So what are you using for visualizations??? the stock set?
[16:11:00] MrSpiffy: CJC, yes – I have not played with that yet
[16:11:00] MrSpiffy: CJC, are you using an album art visualization?
[16:11:00] MrSpiffy: if so it sounds like it could be very cool
[16:12:00] CJC: I read somewhere about using M$ windowsmedia visualizations with mythtv... but can't find it anymore :( I'm not getting the album art either, but I don't know if that's due to my ID3 tags being mostly v1.1 and old and maybe incorrect.
[16:12:00] CJC: but it should work
[16:13:00] MrSpiffy: CJC, good guess
[16:13:00] MrSpiffy: CJC, I've been fixng my id3 tags to clean up the player
[16:13:00] MrSpiffy: it's a big job made easier with EasyTag
[16:13:00] Tagada_: Hi. I want to try setting up MythTV with a PVR-350 (using TVOut) on a Pentium II 400MHz box. Has anybody tried such a slow box with success already?
[16:14:00] CJC: Tagada: we recommend 1.0GHz per encoder...
[16:14:00] MrSpiffy: Tagada_, sounds painful
[16:14:00] CJC: Tagada: Your PII 400 probably only has a pc66 rambus and a ata33 harddrive... you won't even be able to write the video to the disk at the bitrates you want to sample.
[16:15:00] Tagada_: hmmm good point
[16:15:00] directhex|work: pc66 sdram
[16:15:00] directhex|work: NOT rambus on p2
[16:15:00] CJC: Tagada: If you try it, first go get an SATA card... and an SATA drive that replaces your slow ide thing.
[16:16:00] CJC: that way you can free up more proc
[16:16:00] CJC: Tagada: and if that's doable... probably drop the onboard audio too if it eats up time from the machine
[16:16:00] MrSpiffy: Tagada_, your cpu will peg at 100% I think your HD is a secondary concern. I am using ata drives and have been for a while – no prob there. when I was running a backend on a 2G pc it nailed the cpu to at least 50%
[16:17:00] CJC: directhex: thanks... I meant your Ram bus... oops on the typos. hehe
[16:18:00] GreyFoxx: Tagada_: I've seen it done on a Similar box with a ATA 100 pci controller
[16:18:00] Tagada_: OK. I will give it a try anyway. If anything I will find out what really is the bottleneck. Thanks.
[16:18:00] GreyFoxx: A coworker of mine set it up on his 450 when he first got his pvr 350
[16:19:00] CJC: GreyFoxx: could he do the whole pause and fast-forward liveTV thing?

[16:21:00] CJC: Am I on a wild goose chase looking for new mythmusic visualizations? Or is there someone here whom can shed a little light on the subject, please.
[16:22:00] GreyFoxx: I'm unaware of any outside of what comes with mythmusic. But I don't use that plugin really.

[16:25:00] GeckoFiend_ is now known as geckofiend
[16:25:00] ChanServ sets mode +v geckofiend
[16:25:00] GreyFoxx: Myth uses it's own internal video player for recordings/livetv and internal player for music
[16:26:00] directhex|work: aren't the visualisations goom-based?
[16:26:00] CJC: GreyFoxx: by internal player, do you mean Myth just compiles parts of mplayer into itself?
[16:26:00] GreyFoxx: CJC: No, it has it's own code
[16:26:00] CJC: directhex: I've read "goom" in a few threads about the visualizations.. but I haven't learned what it's all about.
[16:26:00] GreyFoxx: though they do use as common library
[16:32:00] deepdelver: do somebody know how i can get my windows xp mediacenter remote control working on linux
[16:32:00] CJC: deepdelver: have you setup lirc?

[17:07:00] directhex|work: enough to be usable, anyway, only 4 buttons are screwy
[17:08:00] deepdelver: ah ok
[17:08:00] GreyFoxx: I hacked up a driver to support my remote, which several of my friends use. Others just get a learning remote and "train" it to use the same IR codes as their IR keyboards. So bypassing the need for lirc

[22:24:00] juski: trying to find where it is now
[22:24:00] juski: eh? it's in /usr/local/bin
[22:25:00] juski: and /usr/local/bin is in $PATH
[22:25:00] Krazylegz: Did you try /usr/local/bin/mythtv-setup ?
[22:26:00] juski: just did – TADA!
[22:29:00] ** juski feels very silly now **
[22:33:00] juski: okee, so now I just add /usr/local/bin to my $PATH variable properly, yes?
[22:33:00] laga: juski: umm.
[22:33:00] laga: juski: root doesnt have it ins his path, but every other regular user should
[22:33:00] juski: I was logged in as root
[22:34:00] amax_ is now known as amax

[22:43:00] juski: so mythfrontend works, but it's complaining the backend is protocol 15
[22:44:00] laga: juski: perfectly normal. you'd hace to upgrade your backend to SVN.
[22:45:00] Dibblah (n=Dibblah@82-41-92-251.cable.ubr02.dund.blueyonder.co.uk) Quit (".")
[22:46:00] juski: laga: I know what it is. the previous setup is still there. I'll have to change it to talk to the local backend

[22:51:00] icedutah: Can I manually record from the S-video of my DVR-250? I want to record something from my analog camcorder.
[22:51:00] Tommck: icedutah – cat /dev/inputDevice > file.mpg
[22:52:00] icedutah: That's it? Are you serious
[22:52:00] Tommck: yes
[22:52:00] icedutah: Makes sense since it does have a built-in mpeg decoder.
[22:52:00] Beirdo: pretty simple :)
[22:53:00] laga: icedutah: make sure to change your input to the right one, with ivtvcl.
[22:53:00] icedutah: Man...I've been looking all over for some software to use this capture card.
[22:53:00] icedutah: Thanks!!!
[22:56:00] juski: OMG I think I've inadvertently added my dbox to the original backend. I think I'll have to stop messing about & just wait for 0.19 to come out

[22:57:00] juski: I'm in over my head here – I should have just wiped the old system completely before starting this odyssey
[22:57:00] laga: juski: i've hard rumours that the dboxII-patch will apply to 0.18.1.

[23:01:00] geckofiend: icedutah it's not QUITE that simple. You'll need to use the command line utilities to swtich the input over to svideo and set the capture resolution and what not
[23:01:00] juski: laga: yes I have no doubt there's such a rumour. I think I'll just leave it as it is.. can't really afford the time if I break my mythtv
[23:01:00] geckofiend: bag laga missed you comment
[23:01:00] icedutah: What's a good util to convert mpeg to divx, quicktime, or WMV?
[23:01:00] geckofiend: transcode
[23:01:00] Beirdo: or ffmpeg
[23:01:00] laga: juski: that's sad. well, bug jarod to put the dboxii-patch into 0.18.2.
[23:01:00] Beirdo: either should do it
[23:02:00] icedutah: geckofiend: and ivtvctl does all that?
[23:02:00] Beirdo: and both have their strengths and weaknesses, and both are a PAIN to deal with :)
[23:02:00] geckofiend: yeah
[23:02:00] laga: juski: but on my system, it breaks the automatic mythfilldatabase run. mythfilldatabase thinks that there is epg data for the next 7 days because the dboxII provides this data, but my analog channels are broken then ;)
[23:02:00] laga: geckofiend: heh
[23:03:00] juski: I think I should be okay if I un-configure the thingies so it doesn't know about the other backend
[23:03:00] juski: 7 days? we only get 3 days' EPG here
[23:03:00] juski: so that's another source hack to disable the EPG grabbing then
[23:04:00] laga: juski: i thought you were going to stop it? ;)
[23:05:00] juski: I'm like a dog with a bone who doesn't know how to code

[23:06:00] juski: anyhoo back OT
[23:06:00] juski: (on topic...)
[23:06:00] laga: juski: well, i know german quite well, but i've never used such a tool ;)
[23:07:00] juski: I only bought the damn thing so I could record the channels I get without a capture card
