[00:22:00] ole_schoola: I broke my ALSA :(
[00:22:00] splat1 is now known as splAt1
[00:23:00] Bogus8: ole_schoola: how so?
[00:23:00] ole_schoola: bumped the kernel and kmdls up and my AC-3 shows are spitting nasty crackle
[00:23:00] Bogus8: i'm having sound issues but alsa is actually working... just either not my pvr 150 or not myth
[00:23:00] Bogus8: ah
[00:23:00] ole_schoola: mine worked fine until the bump
[00:24:00] Bogus8: how did you "bump" them?
[00:24:00] ole_schoola: the kernel and the modules reved up
[00:25:00] ole_schoola: specifically....
[00:25:00] ole_schoola: rpm -qa --qf '%{name} ' \*kmdl\*${OLD}\* | sed -e"s,$OLD,$NEW,g" | xargs apt-get -y install
[00:25:00] ole_schoola: worked like a charm
[00:25:00] Bogus8: wonder if it's related to my sound issues
[00:25:00] Bogus8: I didn't have any problems till I did apt-get upgrade
[00:25:00] ole_schoola: prolly not.
[00:26:00] Bogus8: and updated about 30 programs
[00:26:00] Bogus8: no aplay works but myth via pvr 150 has nothing
[00:26:00] ole_schoola: any digital sound gurus out there willing to take a stab at this?
[00:26:00] Bogus8: just went back to older drivers and still got nothing on audio :/
[00:26:00] Bogus8: crackling is usually a clock sync problem

[00:27:00] Manolis: Hello – Are there any HD-3000 owners in here by chance?
[00:27:00] ole_schoola: sorry, a2pc
[00:28:00] Bogus8: ole_schoola: but it matters if the two devices that are connected via digital link are on the same clock
[00:28:00] Bogus8: might just try cycling some stuff and see if it doesn't sync back up
[00:29:00] ole_schoola: this was all working prior to the rev up
[00:29:00] ole_schoola: clock includedc
[00:29:00] Bogus8: did you restart the pc (I know you normally don't need to, but I don't know how else to maybe resync the clock)
[00:29:00] ole_schoola: hmmm ... it hasn't been rebooted in ages. could be kinda fun
[00:30:00] ole_schoola: brb
[00:30:00] Bogus8: I just had a power outage here, first one in like 90 something days :(

[00:38:00] Bogus8: yeah, not sure
[00:38:00] ole_schoola: well crackle is a poor description – steady violent hiss on the order of painful is more apt
[00:39:00] Bogus8: digital is digital the only reason for it to crackle USUALLY is if it has the wrong clock or they aren't synced up right
[00:40:00] Bogus8: a lot of people new to digital will think that something is broken if they hear an out of sync system for the first time

[00:42:00] Bogus8: intrade: aplay plays fine

[00:45:00] intrade: it chewd all my ram + half my swap
[00:46:00] intrade: i guess myth needs loads of ram also
[00:49:00] Bogus8: hmm I don't have much more ram than that and I don't have issues.. I run windowmaker though
[00:49:00] Bogus8: ok, found out that my backend is what is broken
[00:49:00] intrade: yea i run kde latest
[00:50:00] Bogus8: recordings play fine via front end and knoppix live front end doesn't get any audio on another pc

[00:55:00] intrade: yea i had core1

[01:09:00] Bogus8: and then FCP has like 70'sh % of the rest
[01:09:00] Bogus8: then all the windows programs like Vegas and Premeir fight it out for the rest of the crumbs

The result of that was that the times reported by mythtv for recordings were too short, most apparent when I edited a file, setting a cut mark at the actual beginning of the show. when I exit and re-enter the show, it starts further on than where the cut mark was set. I tracked this down to the IVTV_STD driver parameter being missing, which is now fixed,

[04:03:00] reel: mine are crappy cards that I just use for occasional command line configuration or installs
[04:04:00] reel: so it made sense to upgrade them to one with the right outputs
[04:06:00] reub2000: so does anyone know if mythtv would greatly benifit from amd64 gnu/linux?
[04:06:00] djpere-gentoo: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
[04:06:00] djpere-gentoo: * Qt is missing MySQL support. Please add

[04:07:00] djpere-gentoo: great
[04:07:00] reub2000: recompiling qt, you need a good book
[04:08:00] Chutt: you could install a whole other real distribution in the same amount of time!
[04:08:00] reel: what's qt stand for anyhow?
[04:08:00] Chutt: and not have to worry about stupid stuff like that
[04:08:00] djpere-gentoo: http://www.grandtec.com/wirelessVGA.htm <-- lol
[04:09:00] sunilonln: djpere-gentoo: that's overpriced and not what you want
[04:09:00] sunilonln: the terminus of that is vga
[04:09:00] djpere-gentoo: Thus the lol
[04:09:00] djpere-gentoo: Also alot of QT doesn't need to be compiled again
[04:09:00] djpere-gentoo: just part of it
[04:10:00] reub2000: i see
[04:10:00] Chutt: it'd still only take about 3 seconds to fix that problem on a different distro
[04:10:00] reel: here is one: http://www.smarthome.com/7743C.html
[04:10:00] reub2000: so does anyone know if mythtv would greatly benifit from amd64 gnu/linux?
[04:11:00] Chutt: reub2000, no, since there's no such thing.
[04:11:00] Chutt: i think you should call it gnulix

[04:13:00] sunilonln: actually mine didn't have component out; only composit

[04:17:00] djpere-gentoo: that is it so hard
[04:17:00] djpere-gentoo: expensive to convert VGA to TV
[04:17:00] Chutt: so, uh, buy a half modern video card that does it all on the card?
[04:18:00] djpere-gentoo: Yes but I don't have one :P
[04:18:00] reel: hence buy one
[04:18:00] Chutt: you'll be sitting watching things compile for long enough to run to the store and buy one

[05:01:00] twisted_one: maxtor?
[05:01:00] GreyFoxx: actually no. a Seagate
[05:01:00] GreyFoxx: first problem I've ever had with a seagate
[05:01:00] twisted_one: oh, odd.

[05:27:00] sunilonln: i'm running a p3 1ghz, so i'm guessing it's not a good idea
[05:27:00] fryfrog: sunilonln: really, when you get down to it... since it runs with such a low priority it'd only really matter if you had SUCH a slow processor that it took like 2 days for one show to flag :)

[05:37:00] xris: "S"? did they rev it again?
[05:37:00] briand: the -S, as far as I know, denotes that it has Prescott support
[05:37:00] fryfrog: ctrl-a <space> will cycle screen tabs and ctrl-a c will make a new screen

[05:40:00] sunilonln: cool
[05:40:00] xris: hmm, maybe I didn't read far enough in wikipedia. you'd think I knew more about this given how close my company is with intel about these things.

[05:42:00] fryfrog: hyperthreading
[05:42:00] xris: fryfrog: celeron has smaller cache and no HT
[05:42:00] briand: both chips are available in Prescott, fryfrog
[05:43:00] fryfrog: last time i looked at celerons was at the 366A that ran at 550 :)
[05:43:00] briand: don't think so... because the P4 is available with or without hyperthreading
[05:43:00] xris: that's all it's ever been. each time intel revs the P4, the old ones become "celeron"
[05:43:00] xris: briand: all new p4's are HT

[05:50:00] briand: fryfrog: yes, i can check that.
[05:50:00] fryfrog: you might try "lsmod | grep -i acpi" and see if any acpi modules are loaded
[05:50:00] xris: but like fryfrog said, check the bios.. you'll want to look there for some pundit-specific power/fan adjustments, too (haven't looked at mine in ages, so I don't know what to look for)

[06:07:00] sunilonln|away: (it's worth checking)
[06:07:00] briand: yes
[06:07:00] sunilonln|away: ok
[06:08:00] ** sunilonln|away just wants to accomplish solving someone else linux problems for once :) **
[06:09:00] briand: okay, then figure out why this is going on.
[06:09:00] briand: typing the same damn thing I've typed all night, is now working.
[06:09:00] sunilonln|away: fryfrog: mythtranscode doesn't seem to be using that much in terms of resources
[06:10:00] sunilonln|away: is it worse when it's autotranscoding?
[06:10:00] sunilonln|away: briand: so it works now?
[06:11:00] briand: yeah, go figure.
[06:11:00] sunilonln|away: cool
[06:11:00] briand: so, mythtv gurus.. lemme ask an easier question.
[06:11:00] ** sunilonln|away isn't a guru by any means but i'll try to answer **
[06:11:00] briand: i have a pvr-350. Should I use the TV-out on that card, or the TV-out on the pundit box?
[06:12:00] sunilonln|away: i would think it's better to use the 350 since it'll do hardware decoding
[06:14:00] sunilonln|away: also check out http://www.mattmarsh.net/computing/pundit/
[06:14:00] sunilonln|away: although it looks a bit stale
[06:14:00] briand: yes, and also for a front-end only
[06:17:00] briand: anyway... i need to catch some z's... i'll attack this again tomorrow. meanwhile, i appreciate your help... and your patience (even while my patience was wearing thin)
[06:18:00] sunilonln|away: try the 350, it's probably easier to configure
[06:18:00] sunilonln|away: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php?SID& . . . open#capture
[06:18:00] fryfrog: the 350's tv out is *not* fun to setup and use, from what i've read
[06:18:00] sunilonln|away: ok, never mind then

[06:19:00] sunilonln|away: j-rod wrote it, so he'd be the best person to ask specific questions
[06:19:00] briand: well, and yours is working....
[06:19:00] sunilonln|away: after much grief
[06:19:00] briand: so, i'll keep pluggin' away at it
[06:19:00] sunilonln|away: live tv still has audio problems
[06:20:00] sunilonln|away: recording is working flawlessly
[06:20:00] briand: what card are you using?
[06:20:00] sunilonln|away: pvr-150
[06:20:00] briand: well, we'll see how i fare with the -350. i've got a ways to go before I get that far, tho...

[07:43:00] fryfrog: what is a mazda3 vs. mazda6?
[07:43:00] fryfrog: oh, mazda3 is *brand* new

[07:50:00] fryfrog: no, but its FAR less ugly than the pryus
[07:50:00] xris: prius is so much nicer than a civic. heh.
[07:50:00] fryfrog: i agree, its a far better hybrid
[07:50:00] fryfrog: but it is SOOOOOOOOOO UGLY
[07:50:00] ** xris likes the prius, except for its nasty blind spot **
[07:51:00] fryfrog: its like they took that aztec and made it into a car
[07:51:00] xris: fryfrog: matter of opinion. civic is bad engineering (there's a reason why ford, et. al. went with toyota's hybrid system over the honda stuff)

[07:58:00] fryfrog: i don't mind slow people neccessarily, its the ones that don't understand the concept of moving over to the right
[07:58:00] xris: rpete: we have nasty traffic here. but even worse is that despite all of the rain we supposedly get, NO ONE knows how to drive in wet weather.

[07:58:00] fryfrog: people in atlanta put their hazard lights on in the rain, ALL THE TIME
[07:58:00] fryfrog: i hate that
[07:58:00] xris: that's dumb.
[07:58:00] rpete: fryfrog, the more you say, the more I think a miata in that price range would be great
[07:58:00] fryfrog: its like great, now i can see you for sure... but i can't fucking tell when you are gonna change lanes dumbass
[07:58:00] xris: this is more along the lines of tailgaiting in the rain in the dark, not yielding right of way at stop signs at major intersections, etc.

[08:00:00] fryfrog: rpete: man, i think here i see like 80% of people driving miatas are women :)
[08:01:00] bretula: How the heck do I get mythtv-setup to not cut off the buttons on the bottom of the screen?
[08:01:00] fryfrog: rpete: the thing that convinced her i think is driving my mom's SLK 320
[08:01:00] rpete: fryfrog that's really strange, I never see women driving them
[08:01:00] fryfrog: open top, 2 person roadster is so damn much fun to drive
[08:01:00] fryfrog: bretula: deal with it, then fire up mythfrontend and use the over/underscan correction
[08:01:00] xris: bretula: underscan
[08:02:00] fryfrog: bretula: i don't know if changing that in mythsetup is possible, but maybe after you do it in frontend it'll take in the backend
[08:02:00] bretula: fryfrog, How am i supposed to deal with it if I can't even see the buttons to get through setup?
[08:02:00] fryfrog: if its only the bottom buttons, they are "prev/next/cancel" i think, in that order
[08:02:00] rpete: fryfrog, here's another idea, let your girlfriend get whatever she wants, then get a bike :-) you'll both be happy

[08:06:00] fryfrog: then, setup, tv settings i think?
[08:06:00] fryfrog: then maybe playback or general
[08:09:00] bretula: They're in general, deep in there.

[08:15:00] bretula: I've already spent about six or ten hours there
[08:15:00] bretula: Some screens yes, some screens no... Not enough to read them.
[08:15:00] fryfrog: it shouldn't be that hard to predict where the buttons are
[08:16:00] fryfrog: as long as you can see the last option
[08:16:00] bretula: Maybe I can go down to 640x480 and my TV will handle it better.

[08:16:00] fryfrog: cept the last
[08:16:00] bretula: I was just in the video card setup screen and it was different.
[08:16:00] fryfrog: then i think next or cancel becomes "finish"
[08:17:00] fryfrog: try 640 :)
[08:17:00] fryfrog: you can also just set X to use like 600x400
[08:17:00] bretula: I end up creating more and more cards, because I can't even see how to delete them or get out of creating one by cancelling.

[08:17:00] fryfrog: bretula: press "m" or the right key, there isn't actually a visible button to delete
[08:17:00] bretula: Lovely

[08:18:00] bretula: Wow, I was in 640x480... I have to try dropping it to 512x384
[08:18:00] fryfrog: i think "./configure && make?

[08:19:00] xris: qmake
[08:19:00] xris: I think
[08:19:00] nixbased: qmake doesnt seem to be on the box but mythtv 0.17 is
[08:19:00] fryfrog: i though *recent* versions just included that as part of the make or ./configure process
[08:19:00] fryfrog: qmake is a part of the qt-devel packages
[08:19:00] fryfrog: (or just qt if you are using a source based distro)
[08:19:00] xris: fryfrog: dunno
[08:20:00] nixbased: im using Ubuntu

[08:21:00] nixbased: i just think its strange the package isnt on the box even tho mythtv is installed already lol
[08:22:00] nixbased: but ty very much ill install now
[08:22:00] fryfrog: think about it for a second
[08:22:00] fryfrog: and you may realize why
[08:22:00] xris: nixbased: qt-devel is for compiling. you have binaries.
[08:22:00] fryfrog: qt-devel is required to *compile* mythtv
[08:23:00] fryfrog: a mythtv package is binary and does not require compiling
[08:23:00] nixbased: xris no i dont
[08:23:00] bretula: fryfrog, changing resolutions did nothing for me. Even running mythfrontend or mythtvsetup remotely, and letting it take over my whole 1400x1050 screen, it scales everything such that the buttons are *still*not visible.
[08:23:00] nixbased: we dont use binaries lol
[08:24:00] fryfrog: ubuntu is source based?
[08:24:00] nixbased: no but just because something is availible as a bianary doesnt mean you always use it
[08:25:00] nixbased: ive found some binaries have some configs done i dont like so with something we use as a dev project we compile from src
[08:25:00] fryfrog: okay, so you are compiling from source
[08:25:00] nixbased: yep
[08:26:00] fryfrog: and is this a source package from your ubuntu distro? or did you just get the 0.18.1 source from mythtv.org?
[08:26:00] nixbased: i just got the box from my boss who installed 0.17 (from src as the src is on the box) was just surprised he removed the needed package for qmale is all
[08:26:00] nixbased: grabbed it from myth
[08:26:00] fryfrog: ahhhhhh, okay now that *is* wierd :)
[08:27:00] nixbased: qmake*

[08:27:00] fryfrog: might try "slocate -u && slocate qmake"
[08:27:00] nixbased: ya ill look im gonna go play with it now thnks again

I would consider MediaPortal to be similar in many ways to where MythTV was 2 years ago when I gave up on the LinuxPVR thing. ie, lots of promise, but

[14:57:00] FrereJacques: Hello everyone!
[14:57:00] FrereJacques: Maybe someone can help me? I want to use mythtv, but it doesn't work. "Connection to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543. Connection timed out." MySQL seems to be running and there seems to be a "mythconverg"-database in MySQL. My system: Debian Sarge, bttv878, PAL (germany).
[14:57:00] FrereJacques: What can I do?
[14:58:00] Tommck: FrereJacques – is mythbackend running?
[15:00:00] FrereJacques: Tommck: Oh, no, it wasn't. But it doesn't start: "Authentication Rejected reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed."
[15:00:00] Tommck: hmm... well... you have to get mythbackend to start in order to have the front end work, n'est-ce pas? :)
[15:01:00] splAt1 is now known as splat1
[15:01:00] FrereJacques: Tommck: Well, of course. But how do I do the authentication? How does the backend know the password for the "mythtv"-user in MySQL?
[15:02:00] Tommck: I am just guessing here, but it sounds like there's a problem with your MySQL installation... mythbackend tries to log in to mysql when it starts... that's probably what is failing
[15:02:00] Tommck: FrereJacques – it's in the mthtv-setup program.
[15:02:00] Tommck: I think
[15:02:00] Tommck: it's been a while since I installed
[15:03:00] FrereJacques: Tommck: mythtv-setup (run as user 'mythtv') starts with a menu: 'allgemeines' (common), 'tv-karten' (tv-cards), 'videoquellen' (video sources) etc
[15:04:00] Tommck: I assume it would be the first one.
[15:04:00] fryfrog: actually, i think the mysql user/pass settings are in the mysql.txt or mythtv.txt somewhere
[15:04:00] FrereJacques: Tommck: In "common" I can choose ip adress, server port, server's status port, master server ip adress and master server port. that's all.
[15:04:00] fryfrog: you'll of course have to CREATE a mythtv user for mysql and give it access to the mythconverg db
[15:05:00] Tommck: fryfrog – that's where they're stored, but I thought the setup program saved them
[15:05:00] Tommck: fryfrog good point...
[15:05:00] Tommck: FrereJacques – did you create the mythtv user for your database?
[15:05:00] fryfrog: i don't recall them being in mythsetup, but its been a while since i visited each setting, so who knows :)
[15:05:00] Tommck: fryfrog – true... now that I think about it, it is probably not in there. Though I have no idea why it isn't....
[15:06:00] Tommck: it certainly seems like it should be able to set the user/password there
[15:06:00] FrereJacques: Tommck: "mysql -u mythtv -p" works, I can input my password and get a "mysql> "-prompt.
[15:06:00] Tommck: FrereJacques – and there should be a mysql.txt file somewhere (wherever mythtv's docs go) that has the same user and password in it (if I am remembering correctly)
[15:07:00] Tommck: if you did not use "mythtv" as your password, you have to change it... someone correct me if I'm giving bad information
[15:07:00] fryfrog: what about "mysql -u mythtv -p mythconverg"
[15:07:00] FrereJacques: Ah, there's a wrong password in /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt. Wait a moment ...
[15:07:00] fryfrog: Tommck: sounds like you got it :)
[15:08:00] Tommck: cool
[15:10:00] FrereJacques: Hm. I changed the mysql.txt an restarted mysql. Then (as root): "/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart". Result: "Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed." :-(
[15:11:00] Tommck: that kind of error makes me think something's wrong with the mysql installation or something... I have no idea
[15:11:00] Tommck: what do you have for the server IP in the mysql.txt? Is it correct?
[15:11:00] fryfrog: FrereJacques: can you check /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log?
[15:12:00] fryfrog: FrereJacques: that for some reason doesn't exactly sound like an error that mysql would spit out, though i could be wrong
[15:12:00] fryfrog: FrereJacques: what IP does mythbackend point to?
[15:12:00] fryfrog: is it 127.0.0.1 / localhost?
[15:12:00] fryfrog: or is it your "real" ip?
[15:12:00] fryfrog: bah, Tommck got that one out first
[15:12:00] FrereJacques: localhost
[15:12:00] fryfrog: hummm

Please see terminal windows for further information." when adding a video source with XMLTV Script "Germany (tvtoday)". The terminal windows says: "sh: line 1: tv_grab_de_tvtoday: command not found"
[15:18:00] Tommck: I believe that has to be downloaded separately, but I may be wrong
[15:18:00] stoffel: yeah, it's part of xmltv
[15:19:00] FrereJacques: ok, I'm doing "apt-get install xmltv" ...
[15:20:00] fryfrog: FrereJacques: you can't start mythbackend until you've run mythsetup
[15:21:00] FrereJacques: fryfrog: Ok. But actually I can't run mythtv-setup without errors. Well, I'm now trying it with "xmltv" being installed ...
[15:22:00] FrereJacques: A, I don't get the above error any more, MythTV trys to get a list of available cahnels ... that looks better ...
[15:23:00] fryfrog: super!
[15:25:00] FrereJacques: mythtv-setup seems to be ok, so I start "/etc/cron.daily/mythtv-backend" as "root" ... it's doing something ("new db connection" etc.) ...

[16:57:00] JonK: i'm telling you though, it does not look like a "no signal found" snow
[16:57:00] Tommck: JonK – you have to make sure you choose the right video inputs when you set it up though
[16:57:00] Tommck: the same stuff it's set up for now needs to be in MythTV
[16:57:00] JonK: i have three card settings
[16:57:00] JonK: /dev/video0 for the 350
[16:57:00] JonK: video1 for the 500
[16:57:00] JonK: video2 for the 500
[16:58:00] JonK: and the inputs as tuner0 and tuner1
[16:58:00] Tommck: right... but don't you map that to the connection too? svideo/tuner/etc?
[16:58:00] Tommck: ok
[16:58:00] Tommck: shouldn't that be tuner1 and tuner2?
[16:58:00] Tommck: wouldn't the 350 be tuner0?
[16:58:00] JonK: no option to do so, and no i dont think so, it's tuner0 and tuner1 for the video 1 or video 2 cards
[16:59:00] JonK: video0 only has tuner0 becuase it has only one tuner
[16:59:00] Tommck: what does the 350 use then?
[16:59:00] JonK: tuner0 for dev video 0
[16:59:00] Tommck: oh... I thought it related to device names.. no?
[16:59:00] JonK: there is no tuner2 to select
[16:59:00] Tommck: ah
[16:59:00] JonK: maps from Card-->Tuner
[17:00:00] Tommck: and neither "card" is working on the 500?
[17:00:00] JonK: no
[17:00:00] Tommck: right
[17:00:00] Tommck: hmm... weird
[17:00:00] JonK: actually, i may not have checked the last possibility fully
[17:00:00] JonK: myth selects the first availble tuner to watch live tv
[17:00:00] JonK: i've never forced it down to tuner 1 on the 500 (tuner3)
[17:00:00] Tommck: JonK – yeah... then you have to switch cards to try them all
[17:00:00] Tommck: you should do that
[17:00:00] JonK: pull the 350?
[17:01:00] Tommck: JonK – no... I don't think so...
[17:01:00] JonK: good, I can't do that from here
[17:01:00] Tommck: Just hit the "switch card" button..
[17:01:00] Tommck: "c" ? I can't remember
[17:01:00] JonK: ah --
[17:01:00] JonK: didn't now I could do that
[17:01:00] Tommck: and it's "y" to switch inputs on a card ?
[17:01:00] Tommck: yeah
[17:01:00] JonK: but I'd be much happier getting the "cat /dev/video1" to work first
[17:02:00] JonK: and then f'ing witt myth
[17:02:00] Tommck: JonK – if you have ptune installed, use it
[17:02:00] Tommck: change it to a known working channel
[17:02:00] JonK: i can, but again can't test it
[17:02:00] Tommck: right...
[17:02:00] Tommck: test that first
[17:02:00] Tommck: it's probably the issue :)
[17:03:00] JonK: i'm skeptical, tuning different channels in myth was no help, but you're right I'll have to try that first once I get home
[17:03:00] EricAnderson: JonK: So, I have the mtd app on my system, but its not running
[17:03:00] JonK: then how do you expect to transcode anything?
[17:03:00] EricAnderson: I dont know, Im on gentoo... shouldnt that kind of thing be included in the init scripts!?
[17:03:00] Tommck: JonK – you had lots of "moving parts" when you're in mythtv... you were assuming everything else was set up right and that it was on the right tuner...
[17:03:00] JonK: i know
[17:03:00] Tommck: if you use ptune, you'll be lower level... less question marks
[17:04:00] JonK: that's why i want to get it working first with cat....
[17:04:00] JonK: once i can grab raw video
[17:04:00] Tommck: JonK – right... so go home and try ptune first
[17:05:00] JonK: but I want to fix it remotely !
[17:05:00] Tommck: I didn't have any of these issues because I'm using svideo :)
[17:05:00] Tommck: you said you don't even have the cable hooked up, right?
[17:05:00] JonK: that's why tuning a particular channel may not be very useful at this time
[17:06:00] Tommck: right... which is why it's impossible for you to fix from remotely anyway...
[17:06:00] Tommck: how are you going to have it working if it doesn't even have input data
[17:06:00] Tommck: ?
[17:06:00] JonK: that's testing for working, not fixing
[17:06:00] Tommck: huh?
[17:06:00] JonK: if we found something wrong in the ivtvctl we'd fix it
[17:06:00] Tommck: right, but it seems like that's OK, so nothing actually needs to be fixed
[17:07:00] JonK: if ther was something wrong in the /etc/modprobe.d file
[17:07:00] JonK: we'd fix it
[17:07:00] JonK: but now we're down to things I can't do here
[17:07:00] JonK: :(
[17:07:00] Tommck: it was your bad assumption that hooking up the coax would automatically give you video without tuning it to a channel that gets us where we are now :)
[17:07:00] JonK: maybe i should get some work donw
[17:07:00] JonK: done
[17:07:00] Tommck: hehe... yeah..
[17:07:00] Tommck: good luck with that when you get home
[17:07:00] JonK: thx

[18:11:00] JonK: i don't think it provides you with one
[18:11:00] Randall64: So how do you recover mythtv when the machine runs out of disk space? It doesn't display any recordings where the list would normally be.

[18:16:00] ledhed: Cool
[18:16:00] ledhed: does it do it on the fly?
[18:16:00] pyrodex (pyrodex@user-24-214-60-221.knology.net) Quit ()
[18:17:00] rtsai: jonk: iirc cywgin does give you an X server

[18:17:00] Randall64: Then does whatever you tell it to during playback.
[18:18:00] GeckoFiend: JonK Myth has a DirectX output layer
[18:18:00] ledhed: ah. Replay does it on the fly. so if you pause in the middle of live tv it will commercial skip upon playing again
[18:18:00] JonK: cool
[18:18:00] Randall64: I wish mythtv would just do the Right Thing when it disk space gets low, instead of just corrupting itself.
[18:18:00] JonK: thought you might have to use the one from starnet
[18:19:00] rtsai: JonK: if you have the CPU, you can do commflag on the fly
[18:19:00] GeckoFiend: Randall64 you know.... if you turn on auto expire it "does the right thing", and Myth doesn't corrupt itself at all. kinda hard for it to do that
[18:19:00] GeckoFiend: mysql might corrupt stuff...
[18:20:00] Randall64: GeckoFiend: The Right Thing in my opinion is to simply stop recording.
[18:20:00] Randall64: That seems pretty reasonable.
[18:22:00] GeckoFiend: there's settings for all of that stuff. like minimum disk space before starting a recording etc
[18:23:00] Randall64: Then the user is left to calculate (guess) how big the largest recording could be.
[18:23:00] ledhed: rtsai, where can I set Myth to Flag on the fly?
[18:25:00] GeckoFiend: Randall64 it's not exactly hard, or you can turn on auto expire and never have to worry about it, or buy bigger disks. We're not going to waste development time rpotecting people who refuse to use the tools rpovided to them
[18:25:00] JonK: i've never used the x server in cygwin, I'm going to have to give it a try
[18:25:00] JonK: buying bigger disks would onlypostpone the problem
[18:25:00] Randall64: Gecko: I propose that it's not that much work to safeguard against corruption, and what JonK said.
[18:26:00] GeckoFiend: well yeah, if you don't properly set the thresholds.
[18:26:00] Randall64: What if the machine actually does other things, that uses disk space?
[18:26:00] GeckoFiend: and really, all you have to do is do like I do and say "there must be at least 10g free" and then leave it alone
[18:26:00] JonK: bah, all it could ever do is overwrite my dedicated partition for myth recordings anyway

[18:32:00] rtsai: JonK: not me
[18:32:00] Randall64: rtsai: Say I guess correctly (or overshoot a lot of be certain) that the max size of a recorded program is 3GB, then another program writes 2GB after mythtv has started recording: blam, mythtv and mysql engage in an orgy of corruption that leaves mythtv unusable.
[18:33:00] JonK: you say that like it was a bad thing
[18:33:00] JonK: last time i attended an orgy of corruption, well lets just say i left smiling

[18:33:00] JonK: what do you have writing 2gb to your myth recordings partition?
[18:34:00] Randall64: That's not your concern ;)

[18:41:00] rtsai: e.g., tell LVM to use more disk, and tell XFS that it has more space underneath that it can use?

[18:43:00] rtsai: ledhed: pvcreate, etc. just tells LVM it has more space. But you still have to do a resize_xfs or whatever to tell xfs that it now has more disk blocks and inodes to play with
[18:43:00] rtsai: (I think, I don't use xfs.)
[18:43:00] ledhed: I dont understand LVM all that well. Will I create a new partition and add it to the LVM?
[18:44:00] rtsai: yeah, google "resize xfs" talks about resizing, etc. The nifty xfs thing is that you can resize while the fs is online (e.g., no need to unmount)

[18:47:00] bretula: rtsai, I can run mplayer on /dev/video1 without a problem... Card looks like it's OK
[18:47:00] rtsai: bretula: i think myth can be more picky about what it gets from the card, compared with other programs

[18:49:00] JonK: can anyone help me with ivtv module settings for a pvr-500, mine do not seem to be workign correctly
[18:49:00] EricAnderson: JonK: I have a 150... dont know if that will help
[18:49:00] JonK: that might,
[18:50:00] JonK: ivtv recognizes the 500 as two 150s
[18:50:00] rtsai is now known as rtsai|afk
[18:50:00] JonK: what do you have for module settings
[18:50:00] EricAnderson: I just followed then gentoo mythtv howto
[18:50:00] JonK: ill take a look
[18:50:00] EricAnderson: None, it just worked
[18:50:00] JonK: how do you like gentoo?
[18:50:00] EricAnderson: i like it alot
[18:51:00] EricAnderson: If you have a fast machine, its a good deal
[18:51:00] JonK: I've been using debian for years, but am thinking of switching
[18:51:00] EricAnderson: I dont run it in my emulator though
[18:51:00] EricAnderson: i hate debian
[18:51:00] EricAnderson: Too slow
[18:51:00] JeffH (user@c-67-172-129-87.hsd1.co.comcast.net) has joined #Mythtv-users
[18:51:00] JeffH: what's up?
[18:51:00] JonK: nah, you just have to optimize it correctly
[18:51:00] EricAnderson: no, I meant too slow to update packages
[18:51:00] JonK: way to slow a release schedule
[18:52:00] EricAnderson: yeah
[18:52:00] JonK: ubuntu is a great alternative
[18:52:00] ledhed: Hi JeffH, I'm a Jeff H also.  :)
[18:52:00] EricAnderson: yeah?
[18:52:00] JonK: my mythbackend is running on ubuntu
[18:52:00] EricAnderson: Ive been looking for a good distro to run within VMWare
[18:52:00] JonK: debian based, releases every 6 months
[18:52:00] JeffH: I'm trying to decide what distribution to base my myth box on. Generally my distro of choice is Debian. Is that a good distro to use for Myth?
[18:53:00] EricAnderson: JeffH: If you have the time to compile and whatnot, I suggest Gentoo
[18:53:00] ledhed: Deb is good. Fedora & Gentoo are also popular
[18:53:00] JeffH: Eric: why? what will the extra hassle of building things myself gain?
[18:53:00] JonK: customization
[18:53:00] EricAnderson: JeffH: Freshest packages
[18:54:00] JonK: binaries compiled for YOUR system, not for a generic one
[18:54:00] JonK: and you learn things at a mad pace
[18:54:00] EricAnderson: When a fix comes out for a package or a new update, I can get it the same day usually
[18:54:00] JeffH: hmm.. I tried Gentoo once.. got tired of the hours and hours and hours of compiling.
[18:54:00] EricAnderson: JeffH: How old is your machine?
[18:54:00] EricAnderson: Also, did you look into distcc?
[18:55:00] JeffH: Eric: it's relatively new.. Athlon XP 2600+. My myth box will be a 3000+
[18:55:00] EricAnderson: then you shouldnt have any trouble with the compile times
[18:55:00] EricAnderson: The initial stuff, sure that takes time
[18:55:00] EricAnderson: But after that, if you keep up on it
[18:55:00] EricAnderson: Not a problem
[18:55:00] ledhed: JeffH, there is a great HowTo for Fedora at: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/ uses apt-get and ATRPMS
[18:56:00] ledhed: no compiling
[18:56:00] JeffH: to really get customized packages in gentoo do I have to delve into all the ./configure options and understand them?
[18:56:00] JonK: why are you throwing that much horsepower for a mytthtv box?
[18:57:00] EricAnderson: JeffH: Nope
[18:57:00] jedir0x: JeffH, no
[18:57:00] EricAnderson: JeffH: it uses flags
[18:57:00] jedir0x: JeffH, USE variable in make.conf
[18:57:00] EricAnderson: JeffH: So you set some global flags, like "mmx ssl apache2 transcode" etc
[18:57:00] EricAnderson: Then all your packages will read the flags and compile accordingly
[18:57:00] jedir0x: heh, i have like 345234523452345 use flags

[19:01:00] JeffH: I'll take that back.. I speced a 2700+

[19:02:00] twisted_one: jedir0x: not at all
[19:02:00] rtsai: twisted_one: you have to enable autotranscode in recording profile, and you also set it in per-recording schedules
[19:02:00] jedir0x: But they have to, they are 600 dollars less ;)
[19:02:00] JeffH: my total system cost is gonna be just over $600.
[19:02:00] twisted_one: rtsai: ah, thank you =)
[19:02:00] jedir0x: not bad
[19:02:00] twisted_one: JeffH: Mine was... $300
[19:02:00] rtsai: twisted_one: you need to turn it on in both places otherwise you won't autotranscode
[19:02:00] jedir0x: i need to get a PVR350 from Frys today
[19:03:00] JeffH: twisted: is that for all new components? or did you have some laying around?
[19:03:00] twisted_one: rtsai: ok, thank you I shall do that soon
[19:03:00] twisted_one: rtsai: any chance that it will transcode my already recorded material?
[19:03:00] JeffH: I wish they'd build a fry's up here.. though online would still be cheaper.
[19:03:00] jedir0x: what i _really_ want is digital out (SP/DIF) to work.
[19:03:00] twisted_one: JeffH: all
[19:03:00] rtsai: twisted_one: no, you'll have to hit all your recordings and "start transcoding" :P
[19:03:00] twisted_one: JeffH: well, I put an extra HD in there
[19:03:00] JeffH: twisted: what kind of case?
[19:03:00] twisted_one: JeffH: the one that came with it

[19:04:00] JeffH: don't want an ugly tower sitting next to my tv.
[19:04:00] twisted_one: JeffH: I got Sempron 2200, 256 MB ram, 40gb HDD PSU for $150

[19:05:00] twisted_one: JeffH: for $150, I dont care =P
[19:05:00] twisted_one: xris: the silverstone is bigger

[19:05:00] jedir0x: wtf

[19:06:00] xris: lc-11 is $60 cheaper, too.
[19:07:00] twisted_one: I just have seen too many HTPC cases which are huge. I dont like them
[19:07:00] twisted_one: xris: mine comes with a VFD though =P
[19:07:00] xris: that's true
[19:07:00] xris: but is it worth $60?
[19:07:00] twisted_one: they sell a 300 series without it for less
[19:07:00] twisted_one: xris: to me, yes, I have to own one somewhere
[19:08:00] xris: heh
[19:08:00] twisted_one: in all the PCs I have built I have never done one yet
[19:08:00] twisted_one: I ahve wanted to since my very first

[19:12:00] laga: my pundit has gotten loud lately, too.
[19:12:00] twisted_one: JonK: perhaps you have a bad bearing or just a cable in the wrong spot which totally f's over the air flow
[19:12:00] twisted_one: pundit?
[19:12:00] twisted_one: name of yoru pc?
[19:12:00] twisted_one: or is that a case?
[19:12:00] laga: twisted_one: asus pundit. nice little thing.
[19:12:00] JonK: it's the shuttle xb75s
[19:12:00] twisted_one: ah
[19:13:00] JonK: it has a lovely automotive paint finish on it
[19:13:00] JonK: also have a ice cube vg61 --- it's much quieter
[19:13:00] JonK: especially since one of the fans died
[19:13:00] laga: heh.
[19:16:00] JeffH: is an athlon xp 1900+ enough power for a myth box?
[19:21:00] JonK: I'm using an athon 2200 for mine
[19:21:00] JonK: are you going to be using hardware encoders"?
[19:21:00] JeffH: yeah.. the 250
[19:21:00] laga: is it possible to have a (master) backend without any capture cards?
[19:21:00] JonK: you'll be fine
[19:22:00] JonK: to use just for videos?/Games?/mp3?
[19:22:00] laga: JonK: nope, i'm planning to make it run on my server which doesn't have any capture cards yet.
[19:22:00] JonK: it being?
[19:23:00] laga: the master backend ;)
[19:23:00] JeffH: JonK: I'm also going to use it for a low volume mail server and a file server.
[19:23:00] laga: and i want to make the backend with the capture cards run on my soon-to-be-diskless frontend.
[19:23:00] JonK: mythtv-setup is used to specify what cards you have
[19:24:00] laga: JonK: thank you, i've been using mythtv for a long time now

[19:28:00] JeffH: JonK: that's precisely why I'm going to get into a house first.
[19:28:00] ledhed: JeffH, 802.11g may be ok for a few streams
[19:28:00] laga: JonK: i'm afraid that I'll loose my mp3s and stuff. but mythtv can't handle multiple drives :/

[19:31:00] ledhed: laga I hear you. I just spent all my $ on a new Ninja
[19:32:00] JeffH: I'm about to spend all my $$ on a house.
[19:32:00] ledhed: JeffH, I feel you too
[19:32:00] laga: ledhed: i think i'll use symlinks instead of lvm. :>
[19:32:00] JeepJerk: GreyFoxx: nvidia-settings sounds easier, no?
[19:32:00] JeffH: its all good.. better than throwing it away on rent.
[19:32:00] laga: ledhed: cool! does it know any nice tricks?
[19:32:00] ledhed: can you create multiple symlinks to one location?
[19:32:00] JonK: use lvm, it's easy
[19:33:00] ledhed: laga, I did an Endo yesterday
[19:33:00] laga: ledhed: symlinking the .nuv files should be easy.
[19:33:00] GreyFoxx: JeepJerk: No, nvidia-settings is not "permanent" unless you make ti auto run when X loads
[19:33:00] laga: ledhed: endo? ;)
[19:33:00] GreyFoxx: Or just add 1 line to your X config file and you are done
[19:33:00] ledhed: motorcycle (reverse wheelie)
[19:33:00] JeepJerk: GreyFoxx: how would I find out how to so the config method?
[19:34:00] laga: JonK: easy when you can afford redundancy. for now, i'll lvm-imize the 300gb hdd and add $things later
[19:34:00] laga: ledhed: nice!
[19:34:00] ledhed: not really about killed my self.
[19:34:00] laga: ledhed: yeah, gotta spend money on a car, too.
[19:34:00] JeffH: does a mythbox take a lot of care and feeding after setting it up? or is it pretty much set once setup right?
[19:34:00] GreyFoxx: JeepJerk: Go read the README for the nvidia drivers :)
[19:34:00] ledhed: go motorcycle. Fast Cheap and good on gas
[19:34:00] laga: ledhed: let's hope you learned something then ;)
[19:34:00] laga: JeffH: mine does. other people's boxes don't.
[19:35:00] JeffH: laga: why does yours?
[19:35:00] laga: JeffH: because i'm stupid and used to be low on disk space ;)
[19:35:00] ledhed: laga, nope brain memory was at capacity.
[19:35:00] GreyFoxx: JeepJerk: You add a "TVOverscan" option to the section where you define info about the card
[19:35:00] laga: ledhed: naw. my parents won't pay for a motorcycle. ;)
[19:36:00] ledhed: your parents. LOL
[19:36:00] JeffH: wonder if it would make sense to put 2 hds in the box.. a small one for the system files.. and a larger one where all the recordings live.
[19:36:00] ledhed: JeffH, YES!
[19:36:00] ** laga is a spoiled brat **
[19:36:00] JonK: that's exactly what i did
[19:36:00] JeepJerk: GreyFoxx: thanks
[19:36:00] ledhed: put the OS on a small drive and use the other as Myth Storage
[19:36:00] laga: JeffH: the bigger drive can spin down then.
[19:37:00] JonK: a 60gb drive (25 to /, 20 to an old windows partitoin with backup files from my old firm, the rest to myth video)
[19:37:00] GreyFoxx: Ack, why would you want to spin down the drive?
[19:37:00] JonK: after getting myth running i added a 300gb drive to the
[19:37:00] JonK: myth video
[19:37:00] JonK: and am about to add another one
[19:38:00] ledhed: I wont even go into what I've spent on my storage.. Sad really
[19:38:00] JeffH: haha
[19:38:00] JeffH: I've got an old 40gb ide drive.
[19:38:00] laga: GreyFoxx: well, i usually record one or two things/day. it doesn't make any sense to let the disk run 22hours/days for nothing.
[19:38:00] JonK: and again, how much pr0n can one person really use
[19:38:00] ledhed: it was the 3ware controller that broke the bank

[19:38:00] JeffH: ledhed: you've got a raid setup?
[19:38:00] ledhed: JeffH, is the 40g quiet?
[19:38:00] GreyFoxx: laga: it is worse to spin the drive up and down than to just leave it be
[19:38:00] ledhed: JeffH, ya
[19:38:00] JeffH: led: dunno.
[19:38:00] GreyFoxx: lowers the lifespan of the drive
[19:39:00] JeffH: led: sweet.. I've thought about doing that.. but I don't really need a raid setup.. haha
[19:39:00] ledhed: 7x 160g in RAID5 (960g capacity)
[19:39:00] JonK: woot!
[19:39:00] JonK: im going for 3 300–400 gb drives
[19:39:00] ledhed: Its about 1/2 full. Mostly SpongeBob
[19:39:00] laga: GreyFoxx: i guess it's about 50/50 ;)
[19:39:00] laga: spongebob rocks.
[19:40:00] JeffH: JonK: I think my storage drive is gonna be 300gb sata drive.
[19:40:00] JeepJerk: any guesses on a value for TVOverScan?
[19:40:00] JeffH: ledhed: you have kids or something?
[19:40:00] ledhed: ya
[19:40:00] ledhed: 4
[19:40:00] JonK: for nvida use values between 0 and 1
[19:40:00] GreyFoxx: Jeep trial and error is the best option for you
[19:40:00] GreyFoxx: personally I use 0.979
[19:40:00] JeffH: I was gonna be worried if you said no. haha
[19:40:00] JeepJerk: just keep resetting X?
[19:40:00] JonK: i use 2^(1/2)
[19:40:00] JonK: err.. not really
[19:40:00] ledhed: I actually loke sponge bob. lotta adult humor in it
[19:41:00] GreyFoxx: JeffH: Hey! Spongbob is cool :)
[19:41:00] ledhed: like
[19:41:00] GreyFoxx: I've been watching it long before I kid was born :)
[19:41:00] laga: ledhed: yep.
[19:41:00] JeffH: haha I've never actually sat through an episode.
[19:41:00] ledhed: its even better when I've taken an Ambien (sleeping pill)
[19:41:00] JeffH: ledhed: so is your raid setup in your myth box?
[19:42:00] ledhed: JeffH, watch about 3. and you'll be a fan
[19:42:00] ledhed: JeffH, Ya
[19:42:00] ledhed: RADI5 LVM XFS
[19:42:00] JeffH: doesn't that make it noisy?
[19:42:00] ledhed: no, Seagate 7200.7's
[19:42:00] ledhed: very quiet.
[19:43:00] JeffH: did you go the whole nine yards and get the pull out drives too?
[19:43:00] ledhed: I'm all about quiet computers...
[19:43:00] ledhed: JeffH, no. but my case does have quick release bays
[19:43:00] ledhed: I'm thinking about putting in a 19" rack in my new office
[19:44:00] JeffH: if I had unlimited $$ that would be sweet.. haha
[19:44:00] laga: a 19" rack. in your office. do you want ear plugs with that?
[19:44:00] ledhed: I'm gonna sound proof the closet
[19:44:00] laga: oh, yeah
[19:44:00] ledhed: It already has its own AC
[19:44:00] JeffH: I can see the day coming when a house has a server rack in a closet or basement as pretty much a standard deal.
[19:44:00] JeepJerk: TVOverScan isn't changing anything
[19:45:00] laga: JeffH: i can see the day coming when half of the smog over LA is acutally caused by nano computers.
[19:45:00] ledhed: laga, I have SoyFoam insulation in the walls and the doors
[19:45:00] laga: ledhed: sounds chinese.
[19:45:00] ledhed: and I'm gonna put in Egg Crate foam
[19:45:00] ledhed: I prefer Japanese
[19:45:00] laga: that should be enough ;)
[19:45:00] JeffH: led: you really have enough servers in your house to justify a rack?
[19:46:00] ledhed: including Myth Frontends I have 11 computers
[19:46:00] JeffH: wow.
[19:46:00] rtsai (~rtsai@c-24-63-70-47.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) Quit ("leaving")

[19:46:00] ledhed: yup
[19:46:00] ledhed: 4 frontends
[19:46:00] ledhed: 1 backend
[19:46:00] ledhed: and soon to be 1 commercial flagging server
[19:47:00] dopester: thats alot of tv watching :)
[19:47:00] ledhed: 4 autistic kids. They demand TV
[19:47:00] JeffH: I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.. right now I have 2 servers in my apartment and don't even have a myth box yet.
[19:47:00] JeffH: that's tough led.
[19:48:00] ledhed: Its not so bad
[19:48:00] ledhed: for me anyhow
[19:48:00] JeepJerk: could my driver version be causing TVOverScan to not work?
[19:48:00] ledhed: JeepJerk, is it Nvidia or OpenSource?
[19:48:00] JeffH: what is a commercial flagging server?
[19:49:00] JeepJerk: nvidia
[19:49:00] dopester: mine works with .997 but never with 1
[19:49:00] dopester: no idea why
[19:49:00] ledhed: JeffH, you can have multiple backends. and 1 will be specifically for flagging commercials
[19:49:00] JeepJerk: mine doesn't work with anything
[19:49:00] JeepJerk: :(
[19:49:00] laga: has anyone ever experienced that mythfrontend and libmyth don't get build?
[19:49:00] JeffH: I didn't know such a thing existed.. how does it work?
[19:50:00] ledhed: It flags the commercials so that Myth can skip them
[19:50:00] JeffH: does it do a good job?
[19:50:00] ledhed: I'm not sure. I've never used it. LOL
[19:50:00] JeffH: haha
[19:51:00] JeffH: that would be sweet.. does myth skip them automatically?
[19:51:00] ledhed: I'm told that Myth is 9+5% accurate
[19:51:00] ledhed: +95%
[19:51:00] JeffH: wow, that's pretty solid.
[19:51:00] ledhed: ya if you tell it to
[19:52:00] JeffH: wow.. never watch a commercial again.. how cool would that be. Can you have that with a single backend?
[19:52:00] ledhed: you can watch a 1hr show in 40min
[19:53:00] JeepJerk: yeah
[19:53:00] dopester: i love it when people say to me "have you seen that commercial where.. " and i just cut them off "i don't watch commercials"

[19:56:00] JeepJerk: 1.0.611?
[19:56:00] GreyFoxx: I had issues with 7174/(I think) which would make overscan not have any effect. I reverted to 6629 and it works great
[19:57:00] JeffH: that's cool.. hm.. maybe seperate front/back end is the way to go
[19:57:00] JonK: remember too, the backend itself can run as a frontend
[19:57:00] JeepJerk: err, 6111
[19:57:00] ledhed: JeepJerk, are you setting the overscan in the xconfig or with the nVidia Utility
[19:57:00] JeffH: true.
[19:58:00] JeepJerk: xorg.conf
[19:58:00] ledhed: try the nVidia Util
[19:58:00] JonK: jeep, also mythtv itself has some settings for size of the gui and size of output
[19:58:00] JeepJerk: I can see it in the log (**) NVIDIA(0): Option "TVOverScan" "0.2"
[19:58:00] GreyFoxx: try 0.9
[19:58:00] JeepJerk: but no matter what the value is its always the same
[19:58:00] JeffH: I'll wait and see what kind of house I get.. seems if you separate front end and backend it would be better to have wired network.
[19:59:00] GreyFoxx: You can also try a new version of the driver. a new one came out this week but I haven't touched it yet
[19:59:00] JonK: I use sepearte frontends really for different tvs
[19:59:00] JonK: first tv (in bedroom) has the backend
[19:59:00] laga: JonK: what kind of nvidia do you have?
[19:59:00] JonK: second tv (in main frontroom) has the frontend
[19:59:00] GreyFoxx: I use 2 pc diskless frontends, 1 mediamvp as a frontend and 1 frontend/backjend combo
[19:59:00] JeffH: JonK: that makes sense.. how does your separate frontend talk to backend? wired or wireless network?
[20:00:00] JonK: In the frontend I have a geforce 5200 fx
[20:00:00] JeepJerk: wait, I only have a geforce2
[20:00:00] JonK: I think?
[20:00:00] JeepJerk: will overscan work?

[20:01:00] JonK: have you tried mythtv settings?
[20:01:00] GreyFoxx: JeffH: Yeah, tftp the kernel from the dhcpserver/backend
[20:01:00] GreyFoxx: and nfs mount it's file systems

[20:01:00] JeffH: Grey: that seems pretty slick.
[20:01:00] JeepJerk: mythtv will only size to the screen
[20:01:00] JeffH: aah.. a netboot network card would be even slicker.
[20:02:00] GreyFoxx: JonK: It dhcps for it's info and boot config file
[20:02:00] JonK: you want it to size larger than the screen?
[20:02:00] GreyFoxx: tftp's the kernel
[20:02:00] ledhed: JeepJerk, http://sourceforge.net/projects/nv-tv-out/

[20:04:00] JeffH: I guess the only real advantage to a diskless setup is no hd required.
[20:04:00] laga: and i can't believe that this big tower is full. 2 scsi discs, one ide disc, one streamer and one floppy.
[20:04:00] ledhed: no drive means less noise and heat.. I want to set mine up for diskless someday

[20:09:00] JonK: in fact it's a linux ONLY capture card
[20:10:00] JonK: it does not have windows drivers

[20:16:00] JonK: I'm working on one that analyzes my brain waves
[20:16:00] JeffH: I see led
[20:17:00] ledhed: you put the eye near the tv. because thats where you naturally point the remote
[20:17:00] JeffH: led: don't you have to have the eye be somewhere that the signal will get to? doesn't seem like it would get to inside the box.
[20:17:00] ledhed: my cases have IR windows so I built them into the case and hard wired them to the motherboards

[23:57:00] briand: I'm sure that last aside may have you wondering, so let me just say that, at the outset, where he suggests using xfs or ReiserFS for the /video partition, there is no such choice available within the Fedora Core 3 (or Core 2) Disk Druid
[23:57:00] briand: most of the rest of it has gone fine, until now.
