[00:58:00] jasoncohen: GreyFoxx: in order to build ati_remote for my system, i would do make modules && make modules install, right?
[00:59:00] jams: Beirdo, unless nuvexport changed the cli , latest nuvexport should work fine
[00:59:00] jams: and it only uses it if transcoding needs to be done
[01:00:00] Beirdo: I'm pretty sure it has changed some
[01:01:00] jams: heh that could be abarbaccia problem then
[01:01:00] jasoncohen: apparently that's not it. it's still using ati_remote 2.2.1 after i reloaded the module.
[01:02:00] pookSter: Has anyone seen the MythTV Setup Script for F3 around? I can only find for F1 and F2 Fedora
[01:02:00] jasoncohen: how do i rebuild a module?

[01:54:00] darkfrog: I'm using dvdauthor to create dvd content and it's working great, but when I go to watch a DVD that has more than one video on it I can't just skip to it, is there a simple way to tell it to allow me to just skip to it with my remote?
[01:54:00] pookSter: [20:34] egsavage: any fc3 mythtv recent installers here? I'm having a problem using the 'apt-get mythtv-suite'
[01:54:00] pookSter: you and me both egsavage
[01:55:00] pookSter: but..I keep on reading, something will prolly finally jump out and clue me in
[01:55:00] spiderworm: hello all, i've got mythtv installed on another machine in my house, is it now possible to watch saved recordings or live tv over the network? does mythtv natively support this?
[01:55:00] jams: darkfrog, record it as a seperate chapter
[01:55:00] jams: chapter 1 would be title 1 chapter 2 would be title 2
[01:55:00] darkfrog: jams, hey buddy, you always seem to be here when I need you...and always seem to have all the answers. :o
[01:56:00] jams: just make sure you have your chapter skip button setup
[01:56:00] pookSter: spiderworm...is that not what the backend and frontend is all about?
[01:57:00] spiderworm: pookSter: eh, hell if i know! so i could just install the mythtv frontend on my linux computer, connect to the backend on the server, and watch tv on the laptop???
[01:57:00] jams: you could also record them as seperate titleset's but that button isn't mapped on most remotes
[01:57:00] darkfrog: jams, currently I'm not using an XML definition for dvdauthor, I'm passing everything command-line, do I need XML to do this?
[01:57:00] jams: don't know I have only used the xml
[01:57:00] darkfrog: jams, yeah, I think it's defaulting to titlesets
[01:58:00] egsavage: pookster: still getting it even after a apt-get update
[01:58:00] pookSter: spiderworm, I don't have a successful myth install yet, but from what I have read, you can have the backend do all the recording/storing and access it from multiple frontends. I'm sure someone who has it installed can confirm this
[01:59:00] egsavage: i had a whole bunch of pkgs b4 the last apt-get update, now its just down to mythweb
[01:59:00] spiderworm: wicked sick!
[01:59:00] darkfrog: jams, don't suppose you have a simple XML example of two videos without a menu?
[01:59:00] darkfrog: egsavage, you could be brave and do: apt-get dist-upgrade
[01:59:00] pookSter: egsavage...I've done the apt update and I still don't understand where I'm going wrong
[02:00:00] pookSter: and I've done the apt-get dist-upgrade successfully
[02:00:00] pookSter: I hope to get the mythsetup screen soon so I can work on some new problems :)
[02:00:00] egsavage: dist-upgrade worked for me earlier (no issues), but the myth-suite still comes down to mythweb errors for installing
[02:01:00] pookSter: oh, then you are farther than me.
[02:01:00] egsavage: what is your error?
[02:01:00] egsavage: a bunch of pkgs?
[02:01:00] pookSter: yes
[02:02:00] jams: darkfrog, there you go
[02:02:00] pookSter: so I've set it aside for a while and am doing some reading
[02:02:00] darkfrog: jams, thanks buddy

[02:11:00] darkfrog: hehe
[02:12:00] egsavage: i did changes the sources.list to add the new ayo.us5.freshrpms ... in the machine name though
[02:12:00] darkfrog: it's what I use on my FC3 box
[02:12:00] darkfrog: I believe what I'm using is pretty close to the standard

[02:14:00] darkfrog: egsavage, at this point the best thing I can suggest is either to try that sources.list or start over from the beginning and reformat the box.
[02:15:00] darkfrog: pookSter, I think apt-get knows...not sure though, never set up anything but 386/686

[02:18:00] egsavage: ia: sound on my fc3 didn't work after a reboot until i ran the 'sound detection' app then things worked again – strange – probably some other issue on my box i guess

[07:49:00] mchou: thechris: why do you say that?
[07:49:00] thechris: anyone wanting to do a PVR in linux needs to get a linux supported TV tuner
[07:49:00] SlicerDicer-: mchou: do you know perhaps what frontend works with backend 15?
[07:49:00] thechris: and mpeg2 is a good feature
[07:49:00] mchou: SlicerDicer-: take a wild guess.

[07:54:00] thechris: there are a few others in the 60–80 range, which is approximately half of the 250

[07:56:00] SlicerDicer-: lol
[07:57:00] thechris: you just get old posts and a bunch of MCE2k5 with linux ads
[07:57:00] SlicerDicer-: did you read every word of the <so called old posts>
[07:57:00] mchou: thechris is just clearly misinformed.
[07:58:00] SlicerDicer-: did you read the mythtv documentation from front to back? I can assure you there is some hints in there
[07:58:00] mchou: lol :)
[07:58:00] SlicerDicer-: shit mate I am a total noob to mythtv and I can figure that out

[07:59:00] SlicerDicer-: I am not making fun of you
[07:59:00] SlicerDicer-: all I said is that perhaps you should go take a look at the documentation and read it from front to back on mythtv.org
[07:59:00] SlicerDicer-: I did that came here asked a few questions learned that the pvr-350 would be the best for what I wanted to do
[07:59:00] mchou: lol...you think he might get the hint this time? :)
[08:00:00] thechris: i'll try that. IIRC they used either a 250 or a leadtek (software) card
[08:00:00] thechris: what hint, that you don't know

[08:02:00] SlicerDicer-: lol thechris
[08:02:00] SlicerDicer-: thats just being childish
[08:02:00] thechris: a little
[08:02:00] mchou: thechris: we've just established that you're the one that's clueless.
[08:03:00] SlicerDicer-: keep in mind most of these support channels have language rules and if you violate them you can be banned so please simmer down nah!
[08:03:00] thechris: yes, that's why i'm asking the quesiton.
[08:03:00] thechris: you just don't know the answers but reply anyways
[08:03:00] thechris: SlicerDicer-: message received
[08:04:00] mchou: you come in here making silly assertions about HW encoders 2–3x cheaper than hauppauge. I've already provided evidence to the contrary.....
[08:04:00] thechris: the 150 doesn't seem to have any HW mpeg.
[08:05:00] mchou: thechris: so far you've not been able to substantiate your claim, and you accuse me of being clueless. lol :)
[08:06:00] mchou: wow, someone is intentionally being dense.
[08:06:00] thechris: hmm, that 150 actaully looks like a good deal. i had always heard it wasn't a HW mpeg card
[08:06:00] thechris: and the 250/350 are definately $120+
[08:06:00] mchou: thechris: so?
[08:06:00] thechris: all you really had to say was that the 150 was HW based...
[08:06:00] CanadaBoy (Morpheous@fctnnbsch17-156034220069.nb.aliant.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[08:07:00] SlicerDicer-: thechris: did you even bother to go look at the details on the card to learn about it? Why are you here asking if its HW mpeg would that not be on the site with the 250/350?
[08:07:00] thechris: no, someone had told me it was software based and that the 250 did HW encode and the 350 HW encode/decode
[08:08:00] mchou: thechris: right. So you couldn't be bothered to check the maunufacturer's site.
[08:08:00] SlicerDicer-: or did you just now find out via mchou that the 150 was a good deal without looking baiting information out of him then slamming it against him without a clue as to what your talking about from my end this is what it seems like I dont mean to be rude but come on....
[08:08:00] mchou: Instead you come in here asking us "clueless" ppl.
[08:09:00] thechris: do you guys have friends you trust?
[08:09:00] mchou: what good are friends that you cant trust?
[08:09:00] thechris: well, in anycase, if a friend has told me the 150 isn't HW, then i'll take that for the truth
[08:09:00] SlicerDicer-: jesus christ thechris http://hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_pvr150.html look at that link and shut it your the one who is clueless a simple google search can yeild astonishing results
[08:10:00] thechris: ok, it was a misunderstanding. i was unaware the 150 had any HW features and would not have searched for the 150 specifically because it was on a mental blacklist
[08:10:00] thechris: due to misinformation from friends
[08:10:00] mchou: SlicerDicer-: not to mention 150 is mce certified :)
[08:11:00] SlicerDicer-: mchou:  :)
[08:11:00] mchou: SlicerDicer-: thechris cant be bothered to put 2 and 2 together.
[08:11:00] mchou: :)
[08:12:00] SlicerDicer-: mchou: speaking of the pvr-150 I got the 350 so I could decode/output with that one and encode as well then the pvr-150 to just encode :) least thats my plan if I can ever get this working
[08:12:00] mchou: heh, dont give mr clueless any more ideas :)
[08:13:00] thechris: ok, my bad

[16:50:00] darkfrog: Beirdo, it does
[16:51:00] darkfrog: Beirdo, I've got stress testing stats on it also....Postfix was not one of the candidates I used for stress testing, but sendmail was.

[16:53:00] rjune: I just acknowledge that it has a bad rap because people try to use it like C or C++
[16:53:00] darkfrog: Beirdo, it's true that startup times on Java are much slower than compiled code, but once it's going it's more stable and typically just as fast as comparable compiled code when written properly...sometimes faster.
[16:54:00] Beirdo: it is not more stable
[16:54:00] laga: long startup times suck. imho.
[16:54:00] Beirdo: it can not be more stable

[16:54:00] darkfrog: Beirdo, I also did testing against about 10 others, I was just primarily focused on bigger competitors like Exchange.
[16:54:00] Beirdo: well, duh
[16:55:00] Beirdo: anything's better than Exchange
[16:56:00] darkfrog: Beirdo, consider the fact that many of the aspects of code you have to write yourself has been available in Java for years and has been being updated for stability and efficiency. Are you saying most people write perfectly efficient and perfectly stable C/C++ code on a normal basis?
[16:56:00] Beirdo: and properly written C code will run circles around properly written Java. Any day of the week
[16:56:00] Beirdo: do you think that everyone writes everything from scratch every time they write a program?

[17:00:00] Beirdo: be similar to a skilled programmer
[17:00:00] darkfrog: Beirdo, are you saying the people that write that code at Sun Microsystems are not as competent of programmers as that of a typically C/C++ "skilled programmer"?

[17:22:00] jasoncohen: you have to hit "I" on each film to grab IMDB info

[20:08:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: should be easily fixed. just ftp him a fedora core dvd iso image.
[20:09:00] jasoncohen: that's amusing. i found mythtv a lot easier to setup in mandrake

[20:10:00] cyberknet: mirov: there's mysql.txt
[20:10:00] jasoncohen: but that's only for connecting with the frontend
[20:10:00] mirov: I can't seem to get the "Master Server" running.
[20:11:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: the back end doesn't use it to connect to the mysql server?
[20:11:00] jasoncohen: cyberknet: i'm running my mythtv backend/frontend on Mandriva 2005 LE (flawless upgrade from 10.1) and a remote frontend on 2005 LE laptop
[20:11:00] jasoncohen: cyberknet: nope, i believe mysql.txt just controls the frontend connection
[20:11:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: bully for you =) Mandriva is not a horrible choice.
[20:11:00] slePP: cyberknet: just have to basically determine depth to make the list print properly

[20:14:00] jasoncohen: run mythtv-setup as a user
[20:14:00] jasoncohen: i had this really strange issue where mythtv had 4 capture cards- two added by a user and two by root using mythtv-setup.
[20:15:00] mirov: BTW: /root/.mythtv/mysql.txt doesn't seem to have much in it that isn't commented out.
[20:15:00] jasoncohen: mysql.txt only tells the frontend the ip, db, username/passwd to connect to the backend. it doesn't control backend settings. all of the backend settings are stored inside the db
[20:16:00] jasoncohen: mirov: did you run mythtv-setup as root or user?
[20:16:00] mirov: root
[20:16:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: I only suspected that the backend might read the mysql server ip, username and password from the file, but I do not believe it does now.

[20:19:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: just curious here, what's your reasoning to adding the capture cards as a user?

[20:21:00] jasoncohen: it seems the problem has since been fixed
[20:21:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: I would be surprised too. I can't think of a good reason why it should make a difference whether you added them as root or as a user.
[20:21:00] mirov: btw: Do I really need to specify the IP, shouldn't the 127.0.0.1 loopback default be OK ?
[20:21:00] jasoncohen: mirov: is the backend/frontend on the same box?

[20:24:00] mirov: How do I bind a source to a card ?
[20:24:00] jasoncohen: ctrl-enter to select things? GANT should work out of the box?
[20:25:00] jasoncohen: in mythtv-setup choose input connections
[20:25:00] mirov: didn't for me on FC3. There was no GANT theme included when I yum installed last night.
[20:25:00] jasoncohen: oh- i install from source so i can't help you there. you probably just need to install the gant theme rpm
[20:26:00] jasoncohen: mirov: what version of mythtv are you using?
[20:26:00] mirov: what's the easiest way to tell?

[20:32:00] mirov: jasoncohen: OK, I'll try that tonight when I'm actually on the machine. At the moment I'm several machine and VNC pipes away from the box, and it is really slow to use the GUI...
[20:32:00] UberDupe1 is now known as UberDuper
[20:33:00] jasoncohen: mirov: hmm, it's pretty responsive over VNC...slow as hell over SSH though

[20:33:00] jasoncohen: my VNC is over OpenVPN too
[20:33:00] jasoncohen: cyberknet: so why were you so scathing about mythtv on mdk?
[20:34:00] jasoncohen: i've used both and i prefer mdk for mythtv. FC3 doesn't have btaudio support in the kernel and i had several strange issues with SSH & mysql using FC3
[20:34:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: Oh... I didn't mean to infer I was scathing of mdk only when myth was involved.
[20:34:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: the fact that myth is involved is irrelevant =P"
[20:34:00] mirov: I'm VNC'in into my work office system over the corp net, then VNC'ng thru a SSH pipe to my home gateway, then getting at mythtv with an xhost (and my uplink is really slow at home).
[20:34:00] jasoncohen: so you just don't like mdk generally?
[20:35:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: precisely. It's a personal opinion.
[20:35:00] goodtod: what hardware are you guys using for a frontend, how do you like it?
[20:35:00] cyberknet: I actually dislike FC for the same reasons.
[20:35:00] cyberknet: goodtod: a computer, and yes, I like it.
[20:35:00] jasoncohen: can you /msg me why you prefer FC3 anyways?
[20:35:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: I have no experience with FC3
[20:36:00] goodtod: cyberknet: what kind of computer?
[20:36:00] cyberknet: goodtod: a black one.
[20:36:00] goodtod: cyberknet: :-\
[20:36:00] cyberknet: It says "Antec" on the front
[20:36:00] jasoncohen: goodtod: i'm using a amd 2700+, 512 MB ram, 550 GB with 400 GB LVM for my backend/frontend and i have another 1.6 ghz laptop frontend
[20:36:00] cyberknet: the box said "Sonata"
[20:36:00] jasoncohen: cyberknet: then why did you say to use FC3? what distro do you use?
[20:37:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: I said Fedora Core. You added the 3
[20:37:00] cyberknet: I run FC2.
[20:37:00] cyberknet: Because Jarod's guide is freakin awesome.

[20:37:00] cyberknet: CygnusX1: Hmmm... I think GreyFoxx does.
[20:38:00] jasoncohen: lol, just don't try installing openvpn
[20:38:00] CygnusX1: cyberknet, Sweet. Thank you. I will look him up. I got everything working nicely except the darned remote.
[20:38:00] jasoncohen: a guy on #mandriva was installing openvpn on FC2 and he had a a hell of a time doing so
[20:38:00] cyberknet: CygnusX1: I doubt he can help you with that, he uses an RF remote that interfaces with linux as a USB HID
[20:39:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: I'll keep that in mind =)
[20:39:00] jasoncohen: mdk seems to have more packages than FC3. i just did urpmi openvpn and i was off
[20:39:00] CygnusX1: Hmmm. Maybe that's what I should work towards as well.
[20:39:00] jasoncohen: actually, then i uninstalled 1.6 and installed 2.0-rc16 because i wanted the new features
[20:39:00] mchou: CygnusX1: lol, still working on the remote?
[20:40:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: I just wanted the box up in the shortest amount of time possible. at that point in time, Jarod's guide for FC2 was the fastest and offered direct support for my hardware.
[20:40:00] jasoncohen: ah
[20:40:00] cyberknet: CygnusX1: It is a great solution. Personally I use an IR keyboard.
[20:40:00] mchou: CygnusX1: I dont think GreyFoxx will be able to help you w/150 remote. He uses a derivative of the ATI remote wonder, iirc.....
[20:40:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: to my knowledge, Jarod's guide is still the fastest with the most complete documentation for the widest array of hardware when it comes to MythTV.
[20:40:00] jasoncohen: though, installing from source on mdk was honestly pretty damn simple. everything worked as it was supposed to and i had it running with 2 tuners in very little time
[20:40:00] cyberknet: mchou: I kind of already said that =)
[20:41:00] mchou: cyberknet: yeah well :)
[20:41:00] jasoncohen: GreyFoxx uses a niveus RF remote and he wrote a custom ati_remote driver

[20:49:00] mchou: jasoncohen: not necessarily. there are only 10 or so channels.
[20:50:00] cyberknet: jasoncohen: I believe he is referring to the fact that if they hacked their remote some, they could just flip channels and send an "up" keystroke each time, thereby screwing with your TV experience.
[20:50:00] CygnusX1: mchou, it is just a cheap junker. It is RF...and you almost have to point it at the receiver. lol. I want to have one more go at the PVR150 remote before I buy that kb you recommended
[20:50:00] mchou: CygnusX1: yeah, makes sense. Just hold on tight :)

[23:01:00] slePP: that's by far most common (over 20 times more common than 1 hour)
[23:01:00] slePP: but for getting average expiry times by range, one hour is most common
[23:01:00] cyberknet: Interesting.
[23:01:00] kormoc: why not have it default to 1 hour?
[23:02:00] cyberknet: And # pastes / day
[23:02:00] slePP: 2pm local time is the most popular time to post
[23:02:00] ** cyberknet reinforces kormoc's question **
[23:03:00] cyberknet: Why not default to 1 hour since arguably, most people who leave it at never probably don't care.
[23:03:00] slePP: 29.6, all time record, i think
[23:03:00] slePP: cyberknet: because half the idea is to keep this stuff around for a long time
[23:03:00] slePP: for reference material
[23:03:00] cyberknet: 29.6 pastes on average I could understand, but as a record I do not understand =)
[23:03:00] slePP: i've found some useful tidbits in my own
[23:03:00] ParadigmS (~None@pcp07711124pcs.nrockv01.md.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:03:00] slePP: all time record meaning since day 1
[23:03:00] cyberknet: slePP: Yes, but a record would be a whole number
[23:03:00] slePP: 49.2 in the last 6 months
[23:03:00] cyberknet: an average would be a partial.
[23:03:00] slePP: heh. shush
[23:04:00] slePP: 68.1 per day in the last month
[23:04:00] cyberknet: 68.1 per day last month as an average, but your 'record' is 29.6 in one day?
[23:04:00] ParadigmS: evening all
[23:04:00] cyberknet: see... I'm not buying your record =)
[23:04:00] cyberknet: evening ParadigmS
[23:05:00] ParadigmS: anyone running a remote backend?
[23:05:00] slePP: most popular day is, surprisingly, tuesday
[23:05:00] slePP: cyberknet: nono... i don't have a record :P
[23:05:00] slePP: ignore the record
[23:05:00] slePP: i meant not as in 'world record', but more 'recorded history'
[23:06:00] ParadigmS: nobody
[23:06:00] ParadigmS: ??
[23:06:00] ParadigmS: :(
[23:06:00] cyberknet: ParadigmS: not I.
[23:06:00] slePP: my record day is march 22nd, 2005
[23:06:00] slePP: at 110 posts
[23:06:00] slePP: followed by april 20th at 98 posts
[23:06:00] cyberknet: those I buy.
[23:06:00] ParadigmS: bummer
[23:07:00] slePP: now, cyberknet, consolidate the 20 SQL statements i just entered by hand into my statistics page as a pretty table
[23:07:00] ParadigmS: does anyone know if a remote backend needs its own local database?
[23:07:00] slePP: ParadigmS: it can't use it's own
[23:07:00] slePP: it has to use the master's
[23:07:00] cyberknet: slePP: That would also be a good addition =)

[23:08:00] slePP: i'm thinking: Top 5 Posting Days, Average Posts / Day (All Time, Last 6 months, Last 3 Months, Last month, Last week), Average posts per day of the week
[23:08:00] slePP: average selected expiry time
[23:08:00] slePP: average posts by hour of the day
[23:09:00] ParadigmS: slePP: whenever mythbackend tries to start it complains that it can't connect to the local database by i have mythsetup setup for the remote database :(
[23:09:00] slePP: ParadigmS: check the mysql.txt file it is using
[23:09:00] cyberknet: average expiration time where an expiration time was entered
[23:09:00] cyberknet: would also be handy
[23:09:00] slePP: cyberknet: that's already there on the stats page
[23:09:00] cyberknet: oh
[23:09:00] cyberknet: heh
[23:09:00] cyberknet: =)
[23:09:00] slePP: expiration
[23:09:00] slePP: Shortest Expiry: 5 mins
[23:09:00] slePP: Average Expiry: 2 days 3 hours 25 mins 38.88 secs
[23:09:00] slePP: Longest Expiry: 6 mons
[23:09:00] cyberknet: I even read that too
[23:09:00] cyberknet: d'oh
[23:09:00] slePP: :>
