[00:04:00] Agrajag-: how come when i enable myth cutlist, instead of doing --honourcutlist for mythtranscode, nuvexport does --skip for transcode?
[00:05:00] Beirdo: because it works better?
[00:06:00] Agrajag-: fair enough
[00:06:00] Agrajag-: seems strange though – it seems to take longer if there's lots of cut out bits
[00:06:00] Beirdo: I think that's why
[00:06:00] ** xris remembers that he was listening to music awhile ago... **
[00:06:00] ** j3_ remembers that he *still* hates his job today... **
[00:07:00] xris: :(
[00:07:00] j3_: email is the bane of my existence
[00:07:00] Beirdo: hehe

[00:07:00] xris: j3_: do you do consulting outside of work?
[00:07:00] j3_: yeah, though I haven't had much time for it lately
[00:07:00] xris: like if maybe simech wanted to pay you to set up a groupware suite like OX?
[00:08:00] j3_: I can dig it
[00:08:00] xris: ok. didn't want to offer your services without checking.
[00:08:00] j3_: :)
[00:08:00] NightMonkey: xris is a kind pimp.
[00:08:00] NightMonkey: ;)
[00:08:00] xris: our new "IT guy" (dunno what to call him yet) is just settling in, but that's one of the things he'll have to do. might be easier to have someone do it who has done it before.
[00:08:00] xris: NightMonkey: dam straight.
[00:08:00] xris: damn, even.
[00:09:00] NightMonkey: xris: :)
[00:09:00] j3_: I've set it up a few times now, not bad once you know where you're going
[00:10:00] Beirdo: kormoc: don't forget to give the pimp his cut
[00:10:00] xris: figured
[00:10:00] xris: speaking of which, kormoc still owes me $35 from this weekend...
[00:10:00] xris: good thing he gets paid in a few days.
[00:11:00] xris: nevermind, he just paid his dues.  :)

[00:13:00] j3_: xris: you guys want the fully monty, complete with maia mailguard for anti-spam/av, or is that handled elsewhere?
[00:14:00] Beirdo: hehe
[00:14:00] xris: j3_: I don't think they've even decided on a package yet.
[00:14:00] kormoc: our guys love spam.
[00:15:00] kormoc: the one dude gets cases of it!
[00:15:00] j3_: lol, you think you're guys do...
[00:15:00] j3_: your guys
[00:15:00] xris: j3_: he's talking about the actual pig-based spam.
[00:15:00] j3_: ew
[00:15:00] j3_: not sure which is worse...
[00:15:00] xris: lol
[00:15:00] j3_: okay, no, today, I say the email kind (since I'm up to my neck in it...)
[00:16:00] xris: ick
[00:16:00] xris: I've heard of a good way to stop it completely.
[00:16:00] j3_: change jobs?
[00:16:00] xris: turn off your MX record for a week.
[00:16:00] j3_: oh, that won't help my case...
[00:16:00] xris: yes.
[00:16:00] xris: won't help me, either.
[00:16:00] j3_: (wouldn't be an option either)
[00:17:00] xris: although I guess I could move my mail to another domain for awhile.
[00:17:00] j3_: my home account gets next to nothing
[00:17:00] j3_: despite having the address published all over
[00:17:00] xris: heh. mine gets tons. I've had the same email address since 1995
[00:17:00] xris: I even get typo spam.
[00:17:00] j3_: haven't had mine quite as long, but a few years
[00:17:00] xris: xrisxris@ (started around 1996, someone fat-fingered it typing into a list)
[00:18:00] j3_: :(
[00:18:00] ** j3_ uses maia mailguard at home, works wonders w/a well-trained bayesian db **
[00:18:00] xris: I'm down to about 25/day now that get through my hard blocks. SA catches most of them, and thunderbird catches most of the rest.
[00:18:00] xris: I don't know about maia.
[00:18:00] ** xris goes off to google **

[00:19:00] xris: looks handy
[00:19:00] j3_: which in turn (in my case) uses spamassassin and clamav (and black/white lists)
[00:19:00] xris: Beirdo: send me some. the stuff I bought was rather nasty.
[00:19:00] Beirdo: hehe
[00:19:00] j3_: (and some other stuff)
[00:19:00] Beirdo: you come up here :)
[00:19:00] Beirdo: heh
[00:19:00] xris: j3_: I ran amavisd for awhile. need to get -new set up. doesn't play nicely with courier out of the box, though.
[00:19:00] Beirdo: and you have to let it air a bit
[00:20:00] Beirdo: breathe rather
[00:20:00] chuggachuu (itsme@d209-89-43-116.abhsia.telus.net) Quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))

[00:20:00] j3_: courier for smtp?
[00:20:00] NightMonkey: j3_: You tried DSPAM?
[00:20:00] xris: j3_: for everything, yes.
[00:20:00] j3_: haven't ever got around to dspam, heard good things about it, but I like maia quite a bit
[00:20:00] xris: our former sysadmin came from Real, and they settled on courier for its speed (nothing else could handle their load)
[00:21:00] j3_: you could do -new in a dual-mta setup, would work fine w/courier
[00:21:00] Beirdo: postfix can :)
[00:21:00] Beirdo: heh
[00:21:00] NightMonkey: j3_: So far, it's pretty nifty. I'm building it into a postfix mail gateway, fronting an internal Exchange host.
[00:21:00] j3_: yeah, was gonna say, I can show you some MONSTER postfix send rates...
[00:21:00] Beirdo: it it can handle our load at work, it can for them
[00:21:00] xris: it's easy to set up, but not popular enough for mainstream programs to pick up support for it.
[00:21:00] Beirdo: :)
[00:21:00] xris: Beirdo: courier is like 2–3x faster than postfix.
[00:21:00] xris: or something like that.
[00:21:00] Beirdo: we push > 1M messages a day on each server
[00:21:00] j3_: feh
[00:21:00] Beirdo: * 6 servers
[00:21:00] NightMonkey: j3_: The business people like the pretty, pretty graphs.
[00:21:00] xris: I'm guessing that RN just didn't want to buy new machines.
[00:22:00] Beirdo: with delay of about 5s max
[00:22:00] j3_: yeah, they do, that's what we have zabbix for
[00:22:00] ** j3_ counting send servers in head... **
[00:22:00] j3_: 12 send servers, each pushing out roughly 1mm/day
[00:22:00] xris: I'd like to be able to think about switching to postfix, but have too many users with courier userdb passwords set up.
[00:22:00] j3_: all postfix
[00:22:00] Beirdo: j3_: yes, but is that relaying or sending?
[00:22:00] j3_: the limiting factor is spindle speed
[00:22:00] j3_: sending
[00:22:00] Beirdo: ah
[00:23:00] Beirdo: ours is relaying for customers
[00:23:00] Beirdo: which is a bit rougher (but not much)
[00:23:00] j3_: and another 7 for bounce processing
[00:23:00] Beirdo: heh, yeah
[00:23:00] j3_: and another few for relay
[00:23:00] Beirdo: naughty spamming bastards :)
[00:23:00] j3_: pretty much
[00:23:00] j3_: :(

[00:24:00] Beirdo: ah well, it gets you paid
[00:24:00] j3_: yeah...
[00:24:00] j3_: ah, and technically, really not much difference between "relaying" and "sending" in this case, since all the mails originate from java app servers, which relay them out through the send servers
[00:25:00] Beirdo: ahh
[00:25:00] Beirdo: :)
[00:25:00] Beirdo: true enough
[00:26:00] j3_: actually, if it were being done in a naughty fashion, I woulda bailed long ago
[00:26:00] j3_: its high standards, but definitely still a slimey feel...
[00:26:00] Beirdo: take that spam money just long enough to get a better job
[00:26:00] j3_: exactamundo
[00:26:00] j3_: took the job for the data center, enterprise-level experience I wasn't getting at the software dev house I was at before
[00:27:00] Beirdo: Man does rhubarb wine ever not really taste like rhubarb :)
[00:27:00] j3_: started exactly a year ago
[00:27:00] Beirdo: :)
[00:27:00] j3_: VERY ready for something else...
[00:27:00] Beirdo: how's the options looking right now?

[00:27:00] Beirdo: not totally hosing you today?
[00:27:00] j3_: took a turn up yesterday, then went even further south today
[00:27:00] Beirdo: I so hate options
[00:27:00] xris: Beirdo: the stuff I got does.
[00:28:00] Beirdo: xris: really?
[00:28:00] Beirdo: WTF did they do to it
[00:28:00] j3_: we'll see how the earnings call goes in a few days...
[00:28:00] Beirdo: this stuff's about the color of peach flesh or so...
[00:29:00] Beirdo: and has a nuance of rhubarb, but only slight
[00:29:00] Beirdo: but is definitely wine :)
[00:29:00] Beirdo: heh
[00:29:00] Beirdo: and I removed the oxalic acid
[00:29:00] Beirdo: (precipitated chalk)
[00:30:00] Beirdo: that might be the difference
[00:30:00] xris: could be
[00:31:00] ** xris broke trac.  :( **
[00:31:00] Beirdo: bad xris.

[00:32:00] xris: and backing down doesn't help
[00:32:00] j3_: aol subscribers are most certainly the most brain-dead computer users on the planet...
[00:32:00] Beirdo: It's a royal bitch to rack off the precipitated chalk
[00:32:00] Beirdo: took about 3 rackings before it was all gone
[00:33:00] dhofstra: so, I have sucessfully ./configure, make and make install mythplugins. now mythfrontend segfaults and I think it may be mythphone. Can I remake the beast (excluding mythphone) easily, or do I have to start all over?
[00:33:00] ** j3_ would rather be racking the balls on the pool table in my basement right now... **
[00:33:00] Beirdo: it's such a fine powder that it would kick up with no provocation at all
[00:33:00] Beirdo: j3_: winemaking is fun stuff. and you get such nice results
[00:34:00] Beirdo: or meadmaking, eh, xris?
[00:34:00] j3_: so is methmaking...
[00:34:00] j3_: er, wait...
[00:34:00] j3_: :)
[00:34:00] Beirdo: heh
[00:34:00] j3_: some day when I have time...
[00:34:00] xris: Beirdo: yes.
[00:34:00] j3_: (i.e., never)
[00:34:00] kormoc: You'll lead a international terroristic drug ring?
[00:35:00] Beirdo: it doesn't take that much time to do wine making
[00:35:00] j3_: Seems the only logical thing to do.
[00:35:00] Beirdo: it's quite spread out :)
[00:35:00] kormoc: j3_, makes perfect sense, it does.
[00:35:00] Beirdo: day 1 is a bit painful

[00:35:00] Beirdo: day 7–14 (depending on the must) is a bit of trouble
[00:36:00] Beirdo: after that it's pretty easy
[00:36:00] j3_: the "must"?
[00:36:00] Beirdo: yep
[00:36:00] Beirdo: that's the stuff that's fermenting
[00:36:00] kormoc: the must is the skanky stuff.
[00:36:00] j3_: ah
[00:36:00] j3_: that's what I was thinking...
[00:36:00] Beirdo: yeah, and it HAS to be well ventilated :)

[00:36:00] Beirdo: hehe
[00:37:00] Beirdo: the jalapeno wine made my eyes water for the first 2 weeks every time I went into the can
[00:37:00] dhofstra: yup, it was mythphone segfaulting my frontend; I just went into the mythplugins/mythphone/mythphone dir and 'make uninstall' hope that's ok to do
[00:37:00] j3_: jalapeno wine? cool...
[00:37:00] Beirdo: it's pretty strong stuff :)
[00:37:00] Beirdo: I made it primarily for making chili
[00:37:00] Beirdo: and for the hell of it
[00:38:00] Beirdo: the rhubarb was the fussiest to get done though
[00:38:00] j3_: xris: maybe we have an email for your wife... "Love to cook? Check out these culinary careers!"
[00:38:00] xris: kormoc thinks my habanero mead is mild.
[00:38:00] Beirdo: all that frigging chalk solution
[00:38:00] xris: j3_: lol
[00:38:00] Beirdo: kormoc's obviously a nutcase :)

[00:39:00] xris: he wants to go to Dixie's BBQ and have 4+ spoonfuls of "the man"
[00:39:00] Beirdo: not that there's anything wrong with being a nutcase
[00:39:00] j3_: mocker: yes
[00:39:00] j3_: haven't been
[00:39:00] xris: Moc: yes
[00:39:00] abarbaccia: anybody here using knoppmyth can help me out with what drive letter my cdrom drive is?
[00:39:00] xris: j3_: not vegetarian, so I haven't, either.
[00:39:00] j3_: wtf, where did that ker come from...
[00:40:00] Moc: so the OSD of MythTV will show on the output of the of the PVR350 ?
[00:40:00] Beirdo: heh
[00:40:00] j3_: yes
[00:40:00] j3_: I like really, really, really, really spicy thai food
[00:40:00] j3_: panang beef curry
[00:40:00] Beirdo: I love hot foods, but I have no need for chemical burns
[00:40:00] kormoc: Mmm... Curry...
[00:40:00] Moc: so I can run Mame also from the output of the pvr350 ? ;)
[00:40:00] Beirdo: the heat should enhance the flavour, not BE the flavour
[00:41:00] j3_: wuss
[00:41:00] Beirdo: no, I just enjoy tasting stuff
[00:41:00] Beirdo: :)
[00:41:00] j3_: :p
[00:41:00] kormoc: Beirdo, I had some Da Bomb, ground zero hot sause, it was 234,000 scoville, I dabbed it on my tounge and it didn't cause any chemical burns, so no bad.
[00:41:00] iggy: Moc: probably not, the tvout is ridiculously slow
[00:42:00] iggy: but they seem to be making some headway, so maybe some day
[00:42:00] xris: yay, trac author is going to fix my bug.  :)
[00:42:00] Beirdo: kormoc: yeah, but your tongue is teflon coated
[00:42:00] j3_: one does build up a tolerance to the spice, so you can still taste...
[00:42:00] xris: I mean, my habanero mead is good, but it's quite hot.
[00:42:00] xris: wonder how you measure scoville
[00:42:00] xris: I'm not about to spray 90k squirts of sugar water on my tongue.
[00:43:00] j3_: wearing an edgar suit
[00:43:00] Beirdo: xris: good flavour + hot?
[00:43:00] Beirdo: I had a thai curry last week that was just excellent
[00:43:00] xris: Beirdo: flavor is decent. I need not to include the seeds next time.
[00:43:00] Beirdo: they called it "mid-hot"
[00:43:00] Beirdo: it was pretty mild
[00:44:00] Beirdo: and with the coconut milk in it. YUM

[01:07:00] jemarcks: cromz, no it doesnt. im connected to a DTV reciver svideo and audio cables to my line in
[01:07:00] jemarcks: cromz, i was reading the list and found some say that i should set the mixer to 'default' in mythfroneend setup
[01:07:00] jemarcks: that didnt work
[01:07:00] jemarcks: what do you have yours set to?
[01:08:00] j3_: 'default' is for native alsa
[01:08:00] Cromz: default :/
[01:08:00] j3_: '/dev/mixer' is typical for oss or alsa-via-oss-emu
[01:08:00] Cromz: I use a pvr350
[01:08:00] Cromz: tuner.
[01:08:00] jemarcks: im using alsa
[01:08:00] jemarcks: <- following jarods guide
[01:09:00] j3_: if you get no sound from playing /dev/video0, you need to look somewhere along the line before myth
[01:09:00] j3_: chances are you simply aren't recording audio
[01:09:00] j3_: the 150s are a bit finicky w/svid still
[01:10:00] j3_: jemarcks: btw, this is Jarod again, just a different (finally registered) nick today. :)

[01:11:00] j3_: howdy
[01:11:00] jemarcks: hey, i got a little progress today man. i can play audio with mplay. i cant get great video from the svideo input using mplayer
[01:12:00] Cromz: the only experance with myth and hardware are with the pvr350 and a ati tv wonder ve.
[01:12:00] jemarcks: but when i run mythfrontend and livetv, i get about 2–3 sec of live tv and then it hangs. no audio.
[01:12:00] j3_: I think I have like a dozen different capture cards now...
[01:12:00] jemarcks: a hardware geek lol
[01:12:00] Cromz: I know with the tv wonder, I had to mess with the alsa settings like turning 'line-in' as record and turning the mic off and a few other things.
[01:12:00] j3_: jemarcks: I'd stick with just /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp for the moment
[01:13:00] jemarcks: ok
[01:13:00] jemarcks: no 'default' huh?

[01:24:00] j3_: my wife gets on me if we watch any commercials too (when watching recordings)
[01:24:00] Cromz: LOL

[01:27:00] NightMonkey: jemarcks: A Linksys BEFSR11 DSL/Cable "Router"

[01:27:00] jemarcks: cool
[01:27:00] j3_: actually, they could both be port 80 or 443 internally, but forward 80/443 to one, and something else to the other
[01:28:00] jemarcks: when you look at a recording schedule on myth web and it shows you a picture next to the title, is that a video frame from the show being recorded?

[01:47:00] monkeyBox: Help! I accidentally compiled mythtv with directfb support, and now it's not playing video. Is there a way to disable directfb from the commandline?

[01:47:00] xris: j3_: nope, that part always worked fine.

[01:47:00] NightMonkey: j3_: So, you most likely use the firmware linked to here (from the ivtv Wiki):
[01:47:00] NightMonkey: ftp://ftp.shspvr.com/download/wintv-pvr_250-3 . . . .8.22024.exe
[01:47:00] jemarcks: wife said i have to wait for a commercial lol
[01:48:00] NightMonkey: j3_: Linked to from http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=FirmwareVersions
[01:48:00] j3_: I use whatever firmware comes in the ATrpms packages
[01:48:00] NightMonkey: j3_: Ahha. A distro is in the mix.
[01:48:00] j3_: theres a check ivtv does internally for firmware version, mine's the one that prints out something ending in 0024
[01:49:00] j3_: I use that same firmware across 3 different distros
[01:49:00] j3_: I just have them handy on a FC box from which I pull them elsewhere
[01:49:00] dagar: how can I split mpeg video in linux?
[01:49:00] NightMonkey: j3_: Oh, no, I'm not complaining about that. Just that will lead me to figure out which firmware rev you actually use ;) .
[01:50:00] Agrajag-: dagar: mpgsplit
[01:50:00] j3_: check out the spec file for ivtv-firmware on atrpms.net, and it'll give you the link to the actual downloadable file they include
[01:50:00] dagar: Agrajag-: I need to output mpeg video that will play in windows
[01:50:00] dagar: I have raw mpeg from a dvd
[01:50:00] Agrajag-: transcode will do the job
[01:51:00] dagar: thanks
[01:51:00] ** j3_ makes heavy use of dvd::rip **
[01:51:00] Agrajag-: you can give it a skip option too telilng it which frames to skip
[01:51:00] ikaro: is it possible to play livetv streams in the framebuffer ?
[01:51:00] Agrajag-: but yeah what j3_ said is probably a lot easier :)
[01:52:00] xris: damn, no antenna. guess I buy one
[01:52:00] dagar: how do I use dvd::rip to do it?
[01:52:00] j3_: heh

[01:53:00] j3_: I've got a BEAST antenna on my roof, but I get everything in HD out in MV
[01:55:00] xris: well, I can probably just pick up a silver sensor for testing.
[01:55:00] j3_: I think the one we have in the office cost $20
[01:55:00] xris: and then if I can't get the other-direction stations, I can have Beirdo tell me how to hook up another one to the line.
[01:55:00] j3_: works pretty well
[01:55:00] Beirdo: :)
[01:56:00] j3_: though we're on the 32nd floor of a building with clear LOS to Queen Anne hill, so a coat hanger would probably work here

[02:06:00] dhofstra: you have a lircd.conf for your remote right?
[02:07:00] j3_: jemarcks: you definitely have an ivtv problem, one which I'm not sure how to fix...

[02:09:00] j3_: a stock zss has only a coax feed coming off it, the amplified thing probably has a power cable for a little amp as well
[02:09:00] j3_: jemarcks: you could certainly try that...
[02:09:00] xris: amplified probably won't do me much extra, given how close I am.
[02:09:00] j3_: most likely not
[02:10:00] j3_: if you're really close, an amp can actually be bad
[02:10:00] xris: I've also heard rumors that many cell towers in seattle act as repeaters for hdtv, too.
[02:10:00] j3_: hm... not so sure about that one...
[02:10:00] jemarcks: j3_ guess i have to huh. thanks for your help. i might need more to switch to coax. should i pick compsite or tuner0 to get an input from the DTV box?
[02:10:00] dhofstra: in my opinion, amplification seems to hurt hdtv signals, unless it is just for a long cable run

[02:11:00] iggy: err, minus the : and all

[02:12:00] jemarcks: j3_ ok, i think i tried that before but i will repeat. keep the sounds settings like they are? /dev/mixer /dev/dsp?

[02:12:00] xris: 42" tall
[02:12:00] abarbaccia: alright, so here's my issue – i have lircd running, and the lirc modules installed, and when i run irw it doesnt give me any problems about connection refused, but it also doesn't output anything when i do a keypress
[02:13:00] xris: that can't be right.
[02:13:00] jemarcks: j3_ fyi, i posted this to mythtv-users today with logs and modprobe.conf. hope that helps ys

[02:13:00] j3_: xris: eh? what's 42" tall?
[02:13:00] dhofstra: xris: I am a big supporter of the silver sensor for HDTV; it works really the best of all the indoor types I've tried, but a yagi in the attic still prolly beats it
[02:14:00] xris: oh, I see. it has rabbit ears that pop out.
[02:14:00] j3_: and a yagi on the roof beats that
[02:14:00] j3_: :)
[02:14:00] dhofstra: trump
[02:14:00] xris: well, not putting an antenna on my roof.
[02:14:00] j3_: aw, c'mon
[02:14:00] j3_: I have a lovely 12' yagi atop a 10' mast. :)
[02:14:00] dhofstra: the little radioshack 20 dollar uhf and a 6 dollar attic mount rod work pretty damn good for me
[02:14:00] j3_: then 40' of RG6-QS

So I guess the question is, is there person out there who fought the same battle I am currently battling with
[02:51:00] orenj: my HD/XvMC? And if so, any advice?

[05:39:00] mchou: release and beta.
[05:39:00] mchou: all of 2.6 by definition is BETA, lol :)
[05:40:00] NightMonkey: mchou: No, I'm sure you're not the only one. But just saying that 2.6 is broken is kinda FUDdy.
[05:40:00] NightMonkey: mchou: How is 2.6 beta? It's been released, last I heard.

[05:41:00] mchou: NightMonkey: how am I being vague?
[05:42:00] mchou: I told you the USB disconnects for no reason. It also parses USB info incoorectly in 2.6 (only fixed since 2.6.11.6)

[05:43:00] mchou: incoorectly*

[05:44:00] NightMonkey: mchou: You said "all the broken shit that needs fixing" in 2.6.

[06:14:00] cyvillian: If you're looking for something smaller--regular LCDs are fine.
[06:14:00] stang: I was planning on going with like a 19"
[06:15:00] cyvillian: Check newegg
[06:15:00] stang: and using a hauppauge card
[06:15:00] stang: and of course, myth
[06:15:00] cyvillian: Cool
[06:15:00] stang: is that overkill for just using it as a tuner?
[06:15:00] cyvillian: A hauppauge just for use as a tuner?
[06:16:00] stang: yeah
[06:16:00] cyvillian: Last I checked that's what it was. :P
[06:16:00] stang: very true, but i price checked the 350 and it's almost 200 bucks... seems kind of pricey for just a tuner
[06:16:00] cyvillian: I'm not using the video output on a 350. I'm using DVI out for a projector. If you get an LCD monitor with DVI you won't need to use it. The reason Hauppauge cards are good is because they do MPEG encoding onboard.
[06:16:00] cyvillian: You can always use the 250. That's cheaper.
[06:17:00] cyvillian: I use the 350 for the FM tuner and remote.
[06:17:00] stang: Oh... i guess I need to check out the specs of the tuners a little bit more
[06:17:00] cyvillian: They're basically the best supported, documented, and featured.
[06:18:00] stang: The LCD i'm looking at has the DVI connector so i'll probably use it
[06:18:00] stang: How is the best way to throw in the input for a PS2?
[06:18:00] stang: get an lcd w/ composite in?
[06:19:00] cyvillian: An RF adapter on the cable input?
[06:19:00] stang: that makes sense
[06:19:00] cyvillian: Easiest way
[06:19:00] stang: that's a pretty cheap alternative
[06:20:00] cyvillian: Quality is decent--if you really want, you can buy something to get VGA out on a PS2.
[06:20:00] cyvillian: And get a dual-input LCD like my Samsung 152T
[06:20:00] cyvillian: Pressing the source button switches between VGA and DVI.
[06:21:00] stang: b/c newegg has an Acer 19" for $285 which only has D-sub and DVI, but then there's a Sceptre X9G-gamer for 350 that has those inputs plus s-video and composite
[06:22:00] stang: But running the ps2 to the VGA would probably cost a lot less than that $65 difference
[06:22:00] cyvillian: VGA output on a PS2 will give you 500908324892% better quality than composite.
[06:23:00] cyvillian: I'm running components on my PS2 with Gran Turismo 4 and it looks like BUTTER.
[06:23:00] stang: That makes sense
[06:23:00] stang: Sweet
[06:23:00] stang: So then you can watch dvd's through your ps2 or computer
[06:24:00] stang: and then you use your radio on your haupp.... so no fancy receiver/dvd player is needed
[06:24:00] stang: just a nice speaker setup for the computer
[06:24:00] cyvillian: High quality inputs for computers are expensive. :/

[06:26:00] stang: I'm a college student that moves around a lot and a flat panel is a lot easier to move than a huge tube television

[19:50:00] Ivan_A: Does anyone know if its possible to transcode on a slave backend? Only my mster backend wants to transcode recorded material
[19:50:00] flithm: Ivan_A: I'm pretty sure you can, you just have to deselect that option that only allows jobs to be performed on their recording backends
[19:50:00] flithm: Ivan_A: although I only have one backend so I've not tried this
[19:51:00] Ivan_A: yes, I thought so, but I'm getting this in the log on my slave backend: Attempted to transcode myth://192.168.1.64:6543/1000_20050419210000_20050419220000.nuv. Mythtranscode is currently unable to transcode remote files.
[19:51:00] flithm: hrmf
[19:51:00] Ivan_A: and then on the status page it just says 'failed'

[19:52:00] GeckoFiend: flithm are you running gentoo?
[19:52:00] flithm: GeckoFiend: yeah! (gentoo specific problem?)
[19:52:00] GeckoFiend: your ebuild has mmx disabled by default
[19:52:00] riksta: what's the gentoo problem you are having
[19:52:00] flithm: Ivan_A: a possible workaround comes to mind... maybe mount the recording dir as an NFS mount so it appears local?
[19:53:00] ** riksta interested **
[19:53:00] Cromz: howdy GeckoFiend :)
[19:53:00] flithm: riksta: inverted preview colors
[19:53:00] kormoc: I get the inverted preview piview colors too
[19:53:00] flithm: GeckoFiend: nice, so I just have to force mmx?
[19:53:00] GeckoFiend: one sec let me find the thread
[19:53:00] ** GeckoFiend doesn't use gentoo **
[19:54:00] Ivan_A: yes, I was going to try that but im not sure how to control transcoding jobs that way?
[19:54:00] Ivan_A: was just wondering if anyone was using a slave to transcode
[19:55:00] Ivan_A: my poor backend can't cope!
[19:55:00] flithm: Ivan_A: yeah it seems like it could be complex. the deal is you want to have a machine dedicated to transcoding so your master backend can do other stuff like commercial flagging?
[19:55:00] GeckoFiend: nothign clear in the thread about how to fix it.. but the ebuild has a line that says myconf="--disable-mmx that should probably be removed..
[19:55:00] GeckoFiend: course they might have the ebuild fixed
[19:55:00] GeckoFiend: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89892
[19:55:00] flithm: GeckoFiend: thanks for checking... I'll dig around and see if I can find anything else
[19:55:00] Ivan_A: yes, essentially, I have 2 machines, both 733mhz, one frontend, one backend and I'd like to share the load
[19:56:00] Ivan_A: comflagging works fine on both, next is to get transcoding to work
[19:56:00] Ivan_A: so I have a slave bckend running on the frontend
[19:56:00] Ivan_A: to help out

[19:57:00] flithm: Ivan_A: I know this probably isn't exactly what you want, but do you require transcoding to take place quickly? You could nice the transcodes to like +20 or something... or maybe there's a way to schedule them to run after you've gone to bed?
[19:58:00] Ivan_A: at the moment, im just doing all the transcoding on the backend, and I can leave it that way for now, it would have been nice to make use of spare CPU cycles on my frontend
[19:59:00] Ivan_A: its basically transcoding 24/7
[19:59:00] flithm: Ivan_A: oh I see. hahaha yeah I can see why you might want to do that :)
[19:59:00] Ivan_A: althought running out of HDD space now, so I guess I'll have to record less :)
[20:02:00] Ivan_A: I have another, related question. If I transcode using mencoder from the commandline to mpeg4 and keep the same filename, will myth know how to play it?
[20:03:00] Ivan_A: I could run a cron job on my frontend that kicks in mencoder or something remotely, but I don't know if I need to make changes to the database to tell myth its no longer a mpeg2 file
[20:03:00] Ivan_A: is that necessary?
[20:03:00] flithm: hmmm
[20:03:00] flithm: good questions :)
[20:03:00] flithm: i have no idea. one good way would be to make a backup, try it, and see :)

[20:34:00] Beirdo: freevo--
[20:34:00] flithm: no way... the guide totally sucks. no different colors, such small spaces, you can barely tell what's on. The image viewer looks pretty weak, same with music player. But I guess all that stuff is pretty subjective, plus I'm already sort of biased toward mythtv :)
[20:36:00] Beirdo: as am I :)

[20:56:00] flithm: ip dynamically or static assigned? if static, still running a dhcp client? if dynamic, what dhcp server connecting to? if it's your own, maybe settings are not quite right... if not your own, maybe it's time to install your own :)

[21:00:00] Gumby: debian on both
[21:00:00] splAt1 is now known as splat1
[21:01:00] flithm: one way to tell if it's your dhcp server is you could statically assign the ip and kill the dhcp client... let it run for a while and then you'll know if that's what's doing it. (I suspect it is). One other possibility is NTP, it has a tendency to mess with your dhcp settings if you don't give it the right command line switches... other than that I can't think of anything.
[21:02:00] GreyFoxx: why in the world would ntp touch anything dhcp related ?
[21:03:00] flithm: oh sorry I got that backwards... it's dhcp that modifies ntp settings

[21:04:00] GreyFoxx: Even that sounds odd to me :)
[21:04:00] GreyFoxx: ack, it's past 5! I can go home! yay

[21:08:00] flithm: what's that setting for anyway? does dhcp normally broadcast ntp server information and stuff?
[21:08:00] Beirdo: if you setup your DHCP right, it would create valid ntp.conf
[21:08:00] flithm: i guess it must e
[21:08:00] Beirdo: yes
[21:08:00] flithm: eh
[21:09:00] flithm: i see
[21:09:00] Beirdo: NTP server addresses get pushed out in the DHCP packets
[21:09:00] Beirdo: although I want a specific setup they can't autogen...
[21:10:00] Beirdo: if you don't want it messing with it, tell it not to :)
[21:10:00] Beirdo: same goes for resolv.conf
[21:10:00] flithm: yeah I eventually figured it out. it drove me nuts though, I'd edit the config, then my clock would go out of sync, I'd check and the config was reset again. Heh... pretty funny now that I think back on it.

[21:37:00] FITH: The Athlon 1200's were hot tho (when AMD used to be hotter then Intel :)
