[00:03:00] leOn: one other thing ... the machine where i want to have mythtv is headless .. it's only attached to the TV .. i've set X to use the TV and it's working, but keep getting a vertical bar one the left side of the screen ... could it be that the graphic card is damaged or could it be configuration problem ?
[00:03:00] quink: so anyone on gentoo get things going?

[00:07:00] ByteNik: I'm getting a device or resource busy on alsa:digital

[00:07:00] ByteNik: :P
[00:07:00] ByteNik: what would cause a dev/res busy error for alsa?

[00:36:00] fryfrog: okay, good idea
[00:36:00] ByteNik: fryfrog: Yah, I tried that and it didn't fix it.
[00:37:00] fryfrog: what about just using mplayer to play an hdtv clip?
[00:37:00] ByteNik: fryfrog: And opening this up and swapping sound cards would be a pain right now.
[00:37:00] fryfrog: does that work okay (iimagine it does)
[00:37:00] ByteNik: fryfrog: No issues... its just myth
[00:37:00] fryfrog: which myth lib?
[00:37:00] fryfrog: libmpeg2 or ffmpeg?
[00:37:00] ByteNik: fryfrog: And actually, the first channel tuned to after starting mythfrontend is fine (livetv) and all recorded tv is fine
[00:37:00] ByteNik: Its just after changing channels.
[00:37:00] ByteNik: But if I change channels, close mythfrontend, reopen, and watch (it goes back to the last watched channel) its absolutely fine.
[00:38:00] fryfrog: weird
[00:38:00] ByteNik: If I change channels again the cycle repeats.

[00:55:00] jemarcks_: ah
[00:55:00] r0dzilla: started from scratch

[00:57:00] r0dzilla: what does it fix?

[01:00:00] ikaro: anyone can try this please: mythfrontend -> Watch tv -> press "m" for OSD > program guide -> press cursor up.
[01:00:00] ikaro: it segfaults here.
[01:02:00] r0dzilla: well now mine doesn't have the jitters anymore, but it plays about 3–5 seconds of video, then halts
[01:02:00] r0dzilla: like it's paused
[01:03:00] r0dzilla: ok, I ran it on the cmd line and now I see alot of these messages:
[01:03:00] r0dzilla: waiting for prebuffer

[01:09:00] ByteNik: message*
[01:09:00] ByteNik: then it resumes for a sec or so, and repeats over and over
[01:09:00] r0dzilla: I just found out something that could be causing a performance problem

[01:17:00] ByteNik: the pvr250 works fine
[01:17:00] ByteNik: the pvr150 shows static
[01:17:00] fryfrog: bah, i didn't know you had a 250 :p
[01:17:00] fryfrog: which ivtv you using for 150?
[01:17:00] fryfrog: 0.3.2?

[01:25:00] r0dzilla: anyone know what kernel option produces the msp3400.ko module?
[01:25:00] ByteNik: is that the right tuner tho?
[01:25:00] fryfrog: msp3400 is from ivtv, not kernel
[01:25:00] r0dzilla: I know you have to delete it so that the system sees the version ivtv makes
[01:25:00] r0dzilla: yeah but the kernel has one too
[01:25:00] fryfrog: ByteNik: i couldn't tell you, the same "model" tv card can have almost any tuner type
[01:26:00] r0dzilla: mythtv instructions say to remove any kernel versions so that the ivtv one is used
[01:26:00] ByteNik: i thought the 150 were unified at the moment though.
[01:26:00] fryfrog: r0dzilla: i usually just throw in bt878 as a module and that gets me the right ones
[01:26:00] ByteNik: i know the 250's have like a million revisions
[01:26:00] fryfrog: i don't see why the 150 would only have one tuner type
[01:26:00] fryfrog: you could try forcing it to typ e48, 49, etc
[01:26:00] ByteNik: how can i do that without forcing the 250 to the same tuner type?
[01:27:00] fryfrog: humm, good question :/

[01:35:00] leOn: r0dzilla: not capture card ... i'm talking about graphics card

[02:54:00] r0dzilla: ok, it seems to be working a little better
[02:55:00] r0dzilla: the picture still "jitters" every once and a while

[03:53:00] Beirdo: what is your input?
[03:53:00] Agrajag-: if i change aspect ratios in myth, 4:3 looks wrong, 16:9 looks right, none looks the same as 16:9

[03:53:00] Agrajag-: dvb
[03:53:00] Beirdo: yes

[04:00:00] Beirdo: if the nuv file says it's 1.333, then we treat it as such

[04:45:00] Cromz: r0dzilla: ya mine works fine. I followed readme in the root of mythweb,
[04:45:00] [Klatuu]: turn it off and let it stay off for a few mins
[04:46:00] [Klatuu]: there is no v4l-conf
[04:46:00] soccer45202: i will try shutting down again...okay, thanks
[04:47:00] r0dzilla: Cromz, does the weather page work too?
[04:47:00] Cromz: r0dzilla: yes.
[04:47:00] r0dzilla: there's a readme in the htdocs/mythweb dir?
[04:47:00] Cromz: r0dzilla: yes.
[04:47:00] r0dzilla: I'll have to check it out
[04:47:00] r0dzilla: everything else on mythweb is working except weather
[04:48:00] Cromz: r0dzilla: which myth? 0.17 or 0.18 ?
[04:48:00] r0dzilla: 0.17
[04:48:00] DJ_Rican: ack.. help... my mythtv box just suddenly won't show on tv once x or mythtv are loaded... I can see everything fine until the Nvidia logo and then just weird scrolls... I didn't change anything, it's been running like that for months
[04:48:00] Cromz: oh.. heh
[04:49:00] Cromz: I'm using 0.18

[04:54:00] Cromz: LOL

[04:57:00] r0dzilla: that may be my problem

[05:47:00] mchou: hey defaultro
[05:47:00] defaultro: i see you posting about commercial flagging
[05:48:00] mchou: well, just noticed something strange is all.....
[05:48:00] defaultro: how do you approach commercial flagging? what is your setting?
[05:48:00] defaultro: i want to try it
[05:48:00] mchou: I just set detection method to "All"
[05:48:00] defaultro: am i correct that commercial flagging allows us to ignore commercials?
[05:48:00] mchou: defaultro: dude, how long you been using myth? :)
[05:48:00] defaultro: but not during livetv right?
[05:48:00] defaultro: :)
[05:49:00] defaultro: i have not use commercial flagging
[05:49:00] defaultro: i just turn it on sometimes
[05:49:00] mchou: that's the whole point to myth, virtually.
[05:49:00] defaultro: but it doesnt work well

[05:50:00] defaultro: i set it to ALL before
[05:50:00] defaultro: do you also turn on during watch recording
[05:50:00] mchou: commercial detection doesnt work all that great on "dark" shows
[05:50:00] defaultro: i mean, the skip on?
[05:50:00] defaultro: ah
[05:50:00] mchou: I don't use autoskip.
[05:50:00] defaultro: you know what Im talking about right?
[05:51:00] defaultro: so autoskip is different than commercial flagging?
[05:51:00] mchou: autoskip is a playback setting.
[05:51:00] defaultro: yeah, during when we watch recording
[05:51:00] defaultro: i press M and I select commercial skip
[05:52:00] defaultro: then i select the 4th choice
[05:52:00] mchou: comercial flagging just attempts to detect commercial boundaries.....
[05:52:00] defaultro: ok
[05:52:00] defaultro: so how do i use it

[05:59:00] defaultro: ah, i was right with the letter Z
[05:59:00] defaultro: :)
[06:00:00] defaultro: am i correct that it only works after program has been recorded? Since mythcomflag runs after the show is recorded
[06:00:00] mchou: depends if you have HW or SW encoder. HW encoder is afterwards.
[06:00:00] defaultro: it's air2pc
[06:01:00] defaultro: no encoding

[06:05:00] defaultro: now, i want to add a new one. Unfortunately, if I add a new one, it gets different settings
[06:05:00] defaultro: so the key if i add it to existing conf file will not work due to the previous capture
[06:05:00] mchou: new instance of lircd?
[06:05:00] defaultro: nope
[06:05:00] defaultro: just want to add a button to an existing conf file
[06:06:00] mchou: so, that shouldnt be too hard.....

[06:48:00] jasoncohen: lol, wrong forum, sorry
[06:48:00] jasoncohen: *channel
[06:48:00] mchou: jasoncohen: install mdk 2005 yet?
[06:48:00] jasoncohen: i thought i was in mandrake. 2005 LE came out a few days ago with 2.6.11.6
[06:48:00] jasoncohen: mchou: yup, the day after it was released
[06:49:00] jasoncohen: i like it
[06:49:00] tuxristo: hey mchou, i was just reading the irc log (thanks beirdo for that btw)
[06:49:00] Beirdo: no prob.
[06:49:00] mchou: jasoncohen: yeah, less buggy than 10.1, which I was using :)
[06:49:00] tuxristo: jasoncohen: does 2005 still have that butt ugly smiling penguin wallpaper
[06:49:00] jasoncohen: mchou: i've been fighting with OO line spacing for a day and then realized i didn't install my MS TTF fonts. I installed it and my f'd up line spacing was fixed magically
[06:50:00] mchou: tuxristo: it's a dead penguin this time, even worse :)
[06:50:00] jasoncohen: tuxristo: yes sir
[06:50:00] tuxristo: oh no
[06:50:00] jasoncohen: you can get rid of it though in kde control center
[06:50:00] tuxristo: i know
[06:50:00] jasoncohen: mchou: what was buggy in 10.1 for you?
[06:50:00] galen: hey, i'm trying to figure out plans for a mythtv box, anybody know where to get "universal audio jack" adapter or whatever is needed to get real surround output out of a gigabyte motherboard?
[06:50:00] fatmatt: ahh, I'm using source from kernel.org
[06:51:00] mchou: jasoncohen: usb.
[06:51:00] jasoncohen: what about it?
[06:51:00] jasoncohen: my usb printer, mouse and usb key worked fine
[06:51:00] mchou: usb was big headache. Scanner especially.
[06:51:00] jasoncohen: i like how it automounts the usb key and adds a desktop icon
[06:52:00] jasoncohen: in 2005 it actually shows as mounted unlike in 10.1
[06:52:00] mchou: yeah, taht too.
[06:52:00] jasoncohen: in order to unmount i had to pretend to mount and then unmount
[06:52:00] mchou: 2005 might be a keeper :)
[06:52:00] jasoncohen: now it works as it is supposed to but that was KDE because it worked in gnome
[06:52:00] mchou: 10.1 was just a disaster.
[06:52:00] galen (~galen2@192.211.25.9) Quit (Client Quit)
[06:52:00] tuxristo: 10.1 wasn't bad, 10.2 was looking good until they turned into 2005, network printing in cups is a big pita right now though
[06:52:00] jasoncohen: really?
[06:53:00] jasoncohen: it is?
[06:53:00] jasoncohen: works fine for me
[06:53:00] mchou: tuxristo: huh?? worked outta box for me.
[06:53:00] mag0o (~mag0o@user-24-214-128-145.knology.net) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[06:53:00] mchou: even detected my printer automagically :)
[06:53:00] jasoncohen: you just add the IP of the remote CUPs server and voila remote printers added automatically
[06:53:00] mchou: yeah.
[06:53:00] mchou: what's so tough about that?
[06:53:00] jasoncohen: i think i know what his problem is
[06:53:00] rpete: had some trouble with usb devices in mdk 10.1, otherwise okay
[06:53:00] tuxristo: i have 4 machines here, and only one prints quite right, all was god in 10.1 and below
[06:53:00] jasoncohen: you no longer "add" the printer
[06:54:00] jasoncohen: you add the remote cups server
[06:54:00] tuxristo: god -> good
[06:54:00] jasoncohen: what model printer?
[06:54:00] tuxristo: well it's raw postscrip to port 9100 – lexmark t622
[06:54:00] mchou: Samsung ML1710
[06:54:00] tuxristo: should be a piece of cake
[06:54:00] mchou: oh, sorry :)
[06:54:00] jasoncohen: let me guess
[06:55:00] jasoncohen: the ml 1710 works and the others don't
[06:55:00] mchou: hehe :)
[06:55:00] jasoncohen: i have a ml 1710 and an epson 880
[06:55:00] tuxristo: i just work around it by printing to file and netcat-ing it right to the printer :)
[06:55:00] jasoncohen: linux even has a program to do a head cleaning on the epson
[06:55:00] mchou: sigh, what a kludge.
[06:56:00] jasoncohen: mchou: should i install .18?
[06:56:00] jasoncohen: .17 has been working great
[06:56:00] mchou: maybe.
[06:56:00] mchou: had a funky poblem with commercial detection, but seems to work ok so far.
[06:56:00] jasoncohen: the only problem i have is that it hangs at the end of a show for a few seconds or longer and then goes back to the recorded programs screen
[06:56:00] tuxristo: oh, and b4 2005 you could change firefox to use netcat as the printer – now it insists on going to kprinter
[06:57:00] tuxristo: jasoncohen i had that, that was fixed shortly after 17
[06:57:00] jasoncohen: ah, so i should get .18
[06:57:00] tuxristo: yup
[06:57:00] mchou: kprinter is da bomb! better than sliced bread :)
[06:57:00] jasoncohen: so, how do you install the plugins now? it's all one package, right?
[06:58:00] mchou: I love those multipage filters!
[06:58:00] mag0o (~mag0o@user-24-214-128-145.knology.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[06:58:00] tuxristo: except that i can't print with it no matter what i do; the kprinter option to use a command liek netcat doesn't even work
[06:59:00] mchou: tuxristo: btw, the dead penguin has stars for pupils :)
[06:59:00] tuxristo: so mchou- you on 18 ?
[06:59:00] mchou: that's my only complaint so far re 2005 :)
[06:59:00] mchou: tuxristo: yeah
[07:00:00] mchou: give 2005 a few more weeks I'm sure I'll discover warts :)
[07:00:00] tuxristo: what do you use for comm detection "all" i presume, but do you have strict detection enabled or disabled?
[07:00:00] mchou: yeah, I use all, no strict though.
[07:00:00] tuxristo: ok
[07:01:00] tuxristo: i submitted a patch a while back to make it so that strict mode is a little different in .18 with the all method
[07:02:00] mchou: ooh, that reminds me, I should see if usb now works with motorola surfboard 5100.......
[07:02:00] jasoncohen: mchou: are you a standard or silver club member?
[07:02:00] mchou: used to crap out all the time
[07:02:00] jasoncohen: i don't get the point of the powerpack
[07:02:00] mchou: I'm not a member at all :)
[07:02:00] jasoncohen: you get all the same packages online with FTP sources and the same proprietary stuff in CD4
[07:02:00] jasoncohen: mchou: so you installed off the net?
[07:02:00] tuxristo: mchou: basically, it works better for me for darker shows
[07:03:00] mchou: jasoncohen: yup :)
[07:03:00] mchou: tuxristo: hmm, good to know.
[07:03:00] jasoncohen: i like have the supplemental cd. it installed the nvidia drivers, acroread, realplayer, java runtime environment and had it all setup for me on boot
[07:03:00] jasoncohen: *having
[07:03:00] jasoncohen: acrobat 7 is great
[07:04:00] jasoncohen: it fixes all the crap font problems in kpdf & Kghostview
[07:04:00] mchou: lol, that resource sucker?
[07:04:00] jasoncohen: you're kidding?
[07:04:00] jasoncohen: it starts up in 1 second
[07:04:00] jasoncohen: OO is a resource sucker but i like it
[07:04:00] tuxristo: you guys use plf or thac's rpms at all?
[07:04:00] mchou: no, I'm not kidding. Look up "free" b4 and after.
[07:04:00] jasoncohen: i use plf
[07:04:00] mchou: I use plf.
[07:05:00] jasoncohen: mchou: oh well, it's the best pdf viewer by far
[07:05:00] jasoncohen: though i use kghostview preview in konqueror sometimes
[07:05:00] mchou: I've used 1 or 2 thac rpms :)
[07:05:00] jasoncohen: but kghostview messes up fonts on many pdfs making them unreadabal
[07:05:00] jasoncohen: tuxristo: don't use thacs
[07:05:00] jasoncohen: *unreadable
[07:05:00] mchou: jasoncohen: that's cause you dont have the fonts installed. They print just fine :)
[07:06:00] tuxristo: ya i added thac's to urpmi once to get mythrpms
[07:06:00] jasoncohen: mchou: what fonts do i need?
[07:06:00] jasoncohen: but they look fine in acrobat?
[07:06:00] mchou: that's cause they are incuded and compiled int acrobat.
[07:06:00] mchou: into*
[07:07:00] jasoncohen: mchou: i just installed ms ttf's and it still looks like crap
[07:07:00] tuxristo: then two weeks later i did a "urpm --auto --auto-select" and totally hsed the system :( – so i don't recommend thacs either
[07:07:00] jasoncohen: i'll send you the pdf if you want to see for yourself
[07:07:00] mchou: lol, never do --auto
[07:07:00] jasoncohen: #mandriva ops says thacs rpms can trash a system
[07:07:00] tuxristo: forgot to remove thacs from the list
[07:07:00] mchou: surce recipe for hosing.
[07:07:00] jasoncohen: you learned the hardway
[07:07:00] mchou: thacs or no thacs.
[07:07:00] jasoncohen: mchou: --auto is fine if you use main, contrib, updates
[07:07:00] jasoncohen: and norlug is good too
[07:07:00] mchou: #mandriva ops dont know shit.
[07:08:00] jasoncohen: plf has some crap rpms like libfreetype6 which you should add to your skip.list
[07:08:00] jasoncohen: a few are good
[07:08:00] tuxristo: what's wrong withtheir freetype?
[07:08:00] jasoncohen: YankDownUnder helped me figure out my OO problem when the OO people couldn't
[07:08:00] jasoncohen: tuxristo: it sucks...it will totally screw you your fonts
[07:08:00] mchou: lol. plf freetype is better, dude.
[07:08:00] rpete: been using thacs rpms for years, no problems
[07:08:00] jasoncohen: lol, if you're high
[07:09:00] jasoncohen: the fonts aren't even straight
[07:09:00] jasoncohen: they look itallic
[07:09:00] mchou: no, you just dont understand how it works.
[07:09:00] mchou: pixel subhinting is where it's at.
[07:09:00] tuxristo: rpete, it totally hosed all kde apps for me – the one time i tried it – had to revert everything back out
[07:09:00] jasoncohen: then why did my fonts look like crap after installing it
[07:09:00] jasoncohen: mchou: and you can't do that with the mdk ones?
[07:09:00] rpete: tuxristo, did you figure out why?
[07:10:00] mchou: jasoncohen: nope, not compiled in.
[07:10:00] tuxristo: rpete, nope -but everything was fine after the mandrake and plf rpms went back in
[07:10:00] mchou: tuxristo: upgrading kde is just foolish, especially if you dont know what thge packager ddid.
[07:11:00] mchou: the*
[07:11:00] tuxristo: rpete- the menus were missing, etc
[07:11:00] tuxristo: mchou – it was an accidental upgrade :)
[07:11:00] mchou: hehe, --auto, told ya :)
[07:12:00] jasoncohen: mchou: can you check and see if this pdf looks ok for you?
[07:12:00] jasoncohen: it's small ..about 250 K
[07:12:00] mchou: gimme link.
[07:12:00] jasoncohen: ok
[07:12:00] jasoncohen: wait, i can't. it's from JSTOR
[07:12:00] jasoncohen: you would need access to university resources and you can't without logging in
[07:12:00] jasoncohen: i can DCC you the pdf
[07:12:00] mchou: too bad :)
[07:12:00] mchou: nah, not interested.
[07:12:00] jasoncohen: ok
[07:13:00] jasoncohen: hmm, i'll find a public one
[07:13:00] mchou: trust me, it might look bad on screen, but print out one page and you'll see it's fine.
[07:14:00] jasoncohen: what fonts do i need/
[07:14:00] mchou: that's an artifact due to screen scaling.
[07:14:00] jasoncohen: they look REALLY bad
[07:14:00] mchou: like as in startx --dpi.

[07:18:00] tuxristo: about the fonts, i am using stock libfreetype on 10.2 beta here and the fonts in its oo.org 1.1.4 look really good  – a lot better than in 1.1.3
[07:18:00] tuxristo: whi, i think was 10.1
[07:18:00] tuxristo: whi -> which
[07:19:00] mchou: yeah, same here.

[07:19:00] jasoncohen: tuxristo: did you install any new fonts?
[07:19:00] jasoncohen: the fonts look great for me too
[07:19:00] jasoncohen: but when i had single line spacing it was actually 1.5x
[07:19:00] jasoncohen: once i installed msonfts it worked fine
[07:19:00] tuxristo: i just don't like the gnome icons in oo.org :(
[07:19:00] jasoncohen: it seems to be a problem with the fonts
[07:19:00] jasoncohen: did you notice that the icons in OO 1.1.4 are MDK's..not OO
[07:20:00] jasoncohen: the official OO icons are ugly, as are the ones in 2.0 beta
[07:20:00] tuxristo: hmm, i have never had good luck witht the ms fonts – so i just steer clear now -
[07:20:00] jasoncohen: tuxristo: you said 2.6.11–7 was out for mdk?
[07:21:00] mchou: ms fonts are the bomb :)
[07:21:00] mchou: only good thing MS did :)
[07:21:00] Beirdo: heh
[07:21:00] jasoncohen: i like them
[07:21:00] mchou: actually, apple did.
[07:21:00] tuxristo: nope i am still on 2.6.8.1–12 on all my boxes
[07:21:00] jasoncohen: mchou: did you install the msfonts package?
[07:21:00] mchou: Truetype.
[07:22:00] mchou: jasoncohen: nope. copied them over from my windows install.

[07:25:00] jasoncohen: true, but the OO style is gnomeish
[07:25:00] jasoncohen: what do you think of 2.0 beta?
[07:25:00] mchou: bah, who uses gnome with mdk anyways :)
[07:25:00] jasoncohen: lol, those who don't care about looks
[07:25:00] jasoncohen: heh, i got my GF to use mdk
[07:25:00] mchou: exactly. Butt ugly.

[07:26:00] jasoncohen: this time she clicked on a virus in a AIM profile
[07:26:00] mchou: next time make her install it :)
[07:26:00] tuxristo: well i am a big fan of icewm so i don't rellay use either, kde ofr gnome but i prefer the look and feel of kde
[07:26:00] jasoncohen: she actually likes KDE
[07:26:00] defaultro: mchou, do you use mythweb?

[07:27:00] defaultro: however, i cannot play it
[07:27:00] jasoncohen: i told her how to set a background slide show so now she has 30 NASA images in her slideshow and the background changes to a new random one every 60 seconds
[07:27:00] jasoncohen: pretty cool
[07:28:00] mchou: jasoncohen: you didnt give her the acqua interface?

[07:28:00] jasoncohen: she's not a mac person
[07:28:00] tuxristo: am i the only one that thinks that windows is actually harder to install than linux – imean hit f6 for this f8 for that, bend over backwards to make floppies for raid drivers, manually install the damn network driver from the motherboard cd, same goes for videocard and sound. i just had to do one a week ago
[07:28:00] mchou: linux that looks like a mac :)
[07:28:00] defaultro: tux, only need if it uses custom drivers
[07:29:00] defaultro: no need if it's detected
[07:29:00] mchou: tuxristo: your hw is too fancy 4 windows :)
[07:29:00] jasoncohen: tuxristo: and then install a million apps before you have everything up and running

[07:36:00] tuxristo: i find that mlayerplugin is extrmely touchy – and freaking freezes firefox unless you let every file play right to the end
[07:36:00] mchou: exactly. buggy POS.
[07:36:00] mchou: kaffeine works great, even trailers from apple.
[07:36:00] tuxristo: freezes so bad that i have to manually remove the lock file in .mozilla/firefox/..../
[07:37:00] tuxristo: so kaffeine also embeds into firefox?
[07:37:00] mchou: yup.
[07:37:00] tuxristo: :))
[07:37:00] tuxristo: no crashes?
[07:37:00] mchou: non in 10.1 :)
[07:37:00] mchou: and none so far in 2005.
[07:38:00] mchou: but havent tried much on 2005.

I'm having problems getting the frontend to connect to the backend... I can't find where I tell the frontend to connect to the server!? There's options for connecting to the database, but where's the options for backend? Am I on crack?
[13:47:00] Agrajag-: eh? you need a mysql.txt (i think it's called, it's in the docs) for the frontend to connect to the db
[13:49:00] squigle: um you get a dialog in the newer versions
[13:49:00] flithm: it can connect to the db fine, but I want the backend has like the tuner card and everything in it. I can get a frontend to run on the actual backend machine fine (watch tv okay etc), but I can't figure out how to do anything with the frontend on the actual fontend machine (except connect to the mysql server)
[13:49:00] squigle: um what distro?

[13:50:00] flithm: yes it does
[13:51:00] squigle: ok your right then, but if you change the bind setting to be commented out or your ip address you will find it acutaly works
[13:51:00] flithm: actually the database is on the frontend machine, I have the backend configured to connect to the mysql server on the frontend (which seems to work). and I do have the bind address commented out. do I NEED to run mysql on the backend?
[13:52:00] squigle: so on your fron end you cant talk to the database on the local machine?
[13:52:00] Agrajag-: you can have mysql anywhere

[13:54:00] squigle: Mortall it says what to do
[13:54:00] Agrajag-: you odnt run setup for the frontend machine
[13:54:00] Agrajag-: just have the mysql.txt like i said 10 minutes ago
[13:55:00] Mortal1: squigle, i have run mythsetup
[13:55:00] Agrajag-: (you do have to have the right ip in the backend setup though)
[13:55:00] Mortal1: Agrajag-, dont run setup on the frontend maching? i only have 1 comp
[13:56:00] flithm: hmmm... i ran mythsetup on the backend and set the ip to its externally available ip address (ie not 127.0.0.1) this is the correct way right?
[13:56:00] Agrajag-: Mortal1 not talking to you :)
[13:56:00] squigle: yes flithm
[13:56:00] Agrajag-: flithm: now just make sure your ~/.mythtv/mysql.txt is set up right
[13:56:00] Agrajag-: and it'll work..
[13:56:00] squigle: Agrajag-, what are you talking about?
[13:57:00] squigle: flithm ignore him you are on the right track
[13:57:00] Agrajag-: well he's trying to get his frontend to connect to his backend right?
[13:57:00] flithm: heheh
[13:57:00] squigle: Agrajag-, you are making the same mistake i did,
[13:58:00] flithm: Agrajag-: I've got that file and it points to the right place, with the right password info and so forth!
[13:58:00] squigle: Mortal1, no for you it says in the instuction
[13:58:00] squigle: flithm, yes db is fine, just do what u just did
[13:59:00] Mortal1: squigle, i read the instrucxtion and i believe i set it up right , i have pvr-350
[13:59:00] squigle: oh, seems some thing is doing software encoding, is that the only card you have ? I dont have a pvr-350
[13:59:00] squigle: im using digital
[14:00:00] flithm: squigle: I get this in the frontend: could not connect to master backend server — is it running? is the ip address corrent?
[14:00:00] Mortal1: squigle, i have a hollywood plus
[14:00:00] squigle: does it have a port number in the setup
[14:00:00] Mortal1: squigle, no , not that i know of
[14:00:00] squigle: does it have a port number in the setup (flithm)
[14:01:00] flithm: heh
[14:01:00] flithm: squigle: yeah
[14:01:00] squigle: Mortal1, I cant help u
[14:01:00] squigle: what is it
[14:01:00] flithm: squigle: i didn't change it, left at deafult
[14:01:00] squigle: wanta test soem thing here before i suggest it to you

[14:02:00] squigle: am assuming u have restarted the backend
[14:03:00] flithm: squigle: no I can't! what's going on here?
[14:04:00] squigle: firewall?
[14:04:00] Agrajag-: flithm: first.. are you sure the db connection is happening? you should be able to see that in the output
[14:04:00] flithm: squigle: the process is definitely running though... and no firewall, I can connect to the server machine on other ports
[14:04:00] squigle: mysqladmin
[14:04:00] squigle: will show u an active connection too
[14:05:00] squigle: u restarted the backend after changing the ip?
[14:06:00] flithm: yes just did that. hmm... something is definitely odd. I can telnet to port 6543 with localhost (on backend), but not from frontend machine. why would that be!?
[14:06:00] squigle: hosts.allow
[14:06:00] Agrajag-: are you sure these computers are actually networked? :P
[14:06:00] squigle: or firewall
[14:07:00] flithm: Agrajag-: hahah yes :)
[14:07:00] flithm: there's no firewall, no hosts.deny or any of that... and I've never had a problem connecting from one machine to the other. I ssh into each machine from the other all the time, etc.

[14:09:00] squigle: where did u run setup from?
[14:09:00] squigle: um does telnet 127.0.0.1 <port> work
[14:09:00] ikaro: im not seeing any programs in the program guide, any clues to what might be causing the problem?
[14:09:00] Agrajag-: flithm: if you have mysql on the client, try doing "select * from settings where value = 'BackendServerIP';" and make sure that's right
[14:09:00] Agrajag-: ikaro: you're not runnign mythfilldatabase?
[14:10:00] ikaro: agrajag-, yes i already ran it several times
[14:10:00] flithm: if I do telnet 127.0.0.1 6543 from the backend that works fine. I ran mythsetup from backend machine
[14:10:00] flithm: Agrajag-: trying that
[14:10:00] Agrajag-: ikaro: well is your tv_grab script setup properly?
[14:11:00] ikaro: agrajag-, yeh
[14:11:00] ikaro: theres no setup do be done.
[14:11:00] Agrajag-: well what does mythfilldatabase tell you? does it actaully get any data?
[14:11:00] ikaro: yep its running the grabber and fetching info
[14:12:00] Agrajag-: well there is setup to be done with 'normal' tv_grab_xx scripts
[14:12:00] Agrajag-: with tv_grab_xx --configure
[14:12:00] squigle: ikaro, pipe the data into a file and then use mythfill database to read it in manualy
[14:13:00] ikaro: you run it with --configure and choose the channels .. how hard is that
[14:14:00] squigle: tv_grab_XX > /tmp/tv_grad ; mythfilldatabase 1 -1 /tmp/tv_grad
[14:14:00] Agrajag-: well genius, some scripts require more info that just channels, and obviously yours isn't working so you've done something wrong
[14:14:00] flithm: Agrajag-: I get two values: they both point to the right ip address but there are different "hostname" values... one has the hostname of the backend, one has the hostname of the frontend... seems like this miight not be right?
[14:14:00] Agrajag-: eyah that's right
[14:14:00] ikaro: hehe
[14:15:00] Agrajag-: ok i dunno, nmap the port from both the backend/frontend and see what's up. it's gotta be firewalled or something
[14:15:00] squigle: does telnet <ipaddress> <port> work from the server
[14:15:00] Agrajag-: yeah he already said that did work
[14:15:00] squigle: where ipaddress is the actual ip not localhost
[14:15:00] squigle: or 127.0.0.1

[18:01:00] TheAsp: ikaro: some noise can be eliminated by moving power supply cords away from your cable

I'm gonna be getting a brand new flatpanel TV of some sort (lcd or plasma?) and building a new system... $10,000 or something wouldn't be a problem. I'm wondering what I should look for in a TV and video card (1080i, or s-video or whatever) to end up with the best possible picture/highest resolution on the tv.
[18:52:00] Tommck: why isn't anyone ever in the ivtv-dev channel?
[18:52:00] pattm: I'm not gonna capture an HDTV signal, I just want a nice picture for playing emulators and stuff mostly

[18:58:00] pattm: laga: does watching TV look better when the computer -> television connection is DVI than when that connection is, say, component video out?
