[02:49:32] ulmus-scott: re paul-h git rebase on 11–30: rebasing is fine as long as no one has based changes on what is rebased
[02:49:59] ulmus-scott: obviously this means the master branch should never be rebased
[02:51:43] ulmus-scott: In my opinion, merging a pull request by rebasing and then a fast forward merge is cleaner than using merge commits.
[02:55:59] ulmus-scott: Primarily because rebasing onto the branch to be modified, e.g. master, makes all of the commits appear linearly on top of the previous HEAD, which is how the commits were actually applied to the branch, as one group.
[02:58:19] ulmus-scott: Re: Ubuntu PPA, is there somewhere we could say that is preferred over the Ubuntu packages?
[02:58:57] ulmus-scott: Also, what was the Ubuntu 21.10 SRU stuff about?
[03:17:57] skrip_kid: ulmus-scott: https://mythtv.org/wiki/Packages mentions the PPA. Language should be added that says it's recommended over the Ubuntu packages.
[03:19:00] skrip_kid: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV (linked on the page above) does say that the PPA is the recommended approach (and also mentions MCP).

[16:18:04] paul-h: Before someone freaks out I'm just winding the nerds up on the user list I'm not going to use that background :)
[16:19:54] hampton: Ooh. Pretty. I think I'm starting to go into a trance....
[16:27:21] peterbennett: I remember when snow on your TV screen was a bad thing.
[16:27:45] hampton: Unless it was after the channel signed off for the night. :-)
[16:27:56] hampton: That never happens anymore.
[16:28:37] peterbennett: No we used to get the test pattern after sign off

[21:00:12] stuarta: definitely the upnp/ssdp stack that takes ages to shut down
[21:01:33] stuarta: 11s from when the backend says it's shutting down until upnp/ssdp has finished sending it's byebye's and shutdown
[21:02:05] hampton: So what's causing my backend to take more than 90 seconds to shutdown?
[21:03:32] stuarta: i've always had a suspicion that it's not just ssdp
[21:03:55] stuarta: because a backend that's been running for ages, takes much longer to shutdown than one which has only been up for a short period of time
[21:05:56] stuarta: you could potentially log the output of `pstree -t -p <pid>` to a file to see which threads take their time to die
[21:11:40] stuarta: oh dear. MythPower stuff is also hooked into upnp
[21:11:42] stuarta: sigh
[21:17:45] stuarta: sigh again. both the upnp shutdown sequence, and the ssdp destructor trigger sending a set of byebye's
[21:18:11] stuarta: this can just be pushed to the upnp/ssdp separation work
[21:18:24] stuarta: which is still on the todo list

[21:56:37] ** hampton needs to make to the time to track down what's taking so long here. **
[21:56:45] hampton: Thanks for the pointer to pstree.
[21:58:01] stuarta: i can shave some time off upnp/ssdp shutdown, by only sending a single byebye packet for each of the *8* upnp services, rather than a random 250ms delay for the second (repeat) message
[21:59:05] stuarta: np
[22:00:36] stuarta: i used pstree to validate how many threads were being spun up by the old and new http stacks
[22:03:46] hampton: I've just updated the new http code to compile with Qt5 or Qt6. Running it through my builders now.

[22:21:26] stuarta: well, that's all i'm going to do with shutdown speedup in the upnp/ssdp stack as anything else is related to rewriting it

[22:45:10] stuarta: ulmus-scott: shutdown with upnp enabled should be a bit faster now
[22:49:13] ulmus-scott: stuarta: I'll test it in a little bit.
[22:49:36] stuarta: cool
[22:49:52] stuarta: still more work todo overall
[22:54:51] hampton: I'm seeing a bunch of "av_init_packet is deprecated" warnings that I think are new.
[22:55:14] stuarta: there is so much usage of deprecate ffmpeg code in our codebase
[22:55:28] paul-h: Yeah I noticed those as well
[22:56:03] hampton: I don't think its actually not that bad. Before the merge we were down to 2 or 3 warnings.
[22:56:27] paul-h: Most are new after the ffmpeg update
[22:57:49] ulmus-scott: av_init_packet was deprecated in ffmpeg 4.4
[22:58:38] ulmus-scott: stuarta: 0.5s to shutdown, was about 8 s before
[22:59:02] stuarta: yeah it's much quicker, although hampton has one that takes 90s
[22:59:21] hampton: Its my production backend.

[23:18:44] hampton: stuarta: Did you figure out the problem with the missing __atomic_xxx symbols on aarch?
[23:19:07] stuarta: nope, just replace the rpi debian buster with bullseye 64bit
[23:19:12] stuarta: life is too short
[23:19:29] hampton: :-)
[23:52:49] paul-h: ulmus-scott: I'm definitely not a git expert I'm not a prgrammer so my only experience with git is with MythTV but from what I was told when we switched from svn to git if history is rewritten in a shared branch touched by multiple developers breakage happens
[23:57:15] paul-h: You have to remember a project like MythTV has developers of varying expertise in git
[23:58:27] paul-h: Rebasing your own local branches before committing is obviously different
