[18:37:19] mark____: anyone have any experience/understanding of maximising precision with floats? trying to understand if this glsl extract can be improved for better precision on low precision GPUs(16bit floats)
[18:37:25] mark____: if (fract(v_texcoord0.x * 512.00000000) < 0.5)
[18:37:41] mark____: where x is in the range 0.0 to say 1.0
[18:38:27] mark____: do i lose precision by multiplying a very small number by a relatively large one? gut feeling says yes...
[18:44:20] warpme_ (warpme_!~warpme_@89-70-137-1.dynamic.chello.pl) has quit (Quit: warpme_)
[18:49:27] peper03: mark____: No extensive experience but just from a computational point of view, I would have thought "if (fract(v_texcoord0.x) < (0.5/512))" would be more efficient since it replaces a run-time multiplication with a compile-time division
[18:49:56] peper03: (unless the compiler is already clever enough to spot that itself)
[18:51:25] mark____: peper03: that's my next step – though that extract currently works off the 'fract' inbuilt – so it currently needs to be 0.5 – if you follow.
[18:51:57] mark____: i.e. the 512 is scaling the value up
[18:53:38] peper03: Yes, but if the scaled up value is < 0.5, the original value must be < (0.5/512), mustn't it?
[18:54:27] peper03: And if I understand this page correctly (https://blogs.mathworks.com/cleve/2017/05/08/ . . . rithmetic/), 16-bit floats have a precision of 0.00097656, which co-incidentally (or maybe also not) is 0.5/512
[18:55:12] peper03: So I'm not sure whether that 'if' is ever going to be effective.
[18:55:38] peper03: But as I said, I'm not an expert. Very possible I've missed something.
[19:08:50] CyberJacob (CyberJacob!~CyberJaco@bouncer.bluesapphiremedia.co.uk) has left #mythtv ("AndroIRC - Android IRC Client ( http://www.androirc.com )")
[19:12:48] peper03: OK, reading a bit more seems like it's not quite as simple as that (there's a surprise!) but I think you are right about potentially losing precision by multiplying a small number by a large one.
[19:14:17] peper03: I still think that comparing the fractional part against 0.5/512 would be computationally quicker and should certainly be less likely to be the cause of precision issues.

[20:45:20] mark____: peper03: useful link. the snippet is trying to decide whether the fragment sits in an odd or even column. The addressing is in the range 0.0 to 1.0 – so if the video texture is 1024pixels wide – the column width is 0.00097. it's an adaptation of the rectangular texture version – where a column is 1 wide:) – no precision issues.
[20:48:07] mark____: gets worse if the video is say 1080 wide  – as that requires a texture 2048pixels wide – so column width is 0.000488. and notional precision for 16bit float is 0.00097656
[20:49:42] mark____: notional smallest number is 0.00006 – but can't seem to see whether that is actually available.
[20:54:13] peper03: mark____: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-precision_ . . . ion_examples
[20:55:06] peper03: It seems the smallest possible number in a 16-bit float is approximately 0.000000059605
[20:57:23] peper03: So 0.00006 is certainly possible.
[20:58:38] peper03: The "precision limitations" section just after that also shows how the precision decreases as the value gets larger.
[20:59:55] peper03: So by the time you have a value between 0.5 and 1.0, the precision is about 0.000488
[21:00:27] mark____: pepero3: yup – think I'll try it out – just use a modulus instead of the scaling up and fract
[21:00:48] peper03: Scale that up to between 256 and 512 (i.e. x * 512) and the precision has gone down to 0.25
[21:01:53] peper03: although – duh – 0.25/512 is 0.000488 so overall you haven't lost anything (or not much)

[21:10:19] mark____: peper03: I think the new snippet would look something like: if (fract(x / (2 * col_width)) < 0.5) – e.g. if (fract(0.5 / 0.000976) < 0.5)
[21:28:52] markspieth: mark____: multiplying a float by 2^N only changes the exponent, no change to the mantissa. so long as the mantissa has >= 10 bits.

[21:31:39] markspieth: also the prcision issue is with the iterator when the number gets > 1024 then iteration no longer works as expected. the only way to fix this would be to use 2 input surfaces width split which are iterated individually.
[21:33:14] mark____: markspieth: so you think I'm wasting my time trying to wrangle out some better precision?
[21:33:56] mark____: actually  – I could emulate it on desktop gles2.0 if i force medium precision...
