[00:29:22] markspieth2: jpabq: what about a translation/mapping function for android?

[01:05:20] jpabq: markspieth: I don't think that is necessary. It is really my own fault. I was taking advantage of an aspect of the way they show up under linux, but it is not necessary to do that — I just need to change the theme to use the attributes differently.
[02:30:31] jpabq: I have fixed my font definition problems on Android, but my fonts still don't look good. They are now being loaded correctly (according to the logs) but not all of them are being drawn at the correct size. Either that, or they are not being drawn at the correct size on Linux — either way, the theme looks very different on the two OSs. I have had enough for now, and will have to work on it this weekend.

[03:07:00] gigem: jpabq, markspieth2: I thought I'd been using kernel deint on my shields but apparently I've been using linear blend deint instead. I guess I confused myself with the vaapi2 testing I've been doing. I know for sure I've using kernel deint there. Anyway, when I tried to use kernel deint tonight, it was all messed up for me too until I manually selected interlaced reversed.
[03:09:26] gigem: markspieth2: Who wrote the hw deints for opengl, you or some other contributor? I'd always thought they were standard parts of opengl. If that's not the case, how feasible is it to write accelerated versions of greedy and yadif for opengl? They've always been considered the best software deints we have.
[03:13:59] markspieth2: gigem: not me. not sure how greedy/yadif work. one problem with the current impl of these deints is that the are written assuming line 0 is the first field but that doesnt seem true (not sure of the conditions). so when the adjacent lines are combined, the wrong line is used. line 0 is also the bottom so it flips the order in the last step so its upside down but the correct way on the screen
[03:15:34] markspieth2: like I said I have some patches when I was playing with the green line issues.
[03:21:28] jpabq: Using mediacodec sure looks nice, except on my two damaged channels.
[03:22:24] jpabq: markspieth: did you say you were making progress getting 4k to work? The font issues I am seeing is that they are display noticably smaller on the shield than on my pc hooked up to the same TV. I am guessing it is a scaling issue, but I am not sure how to track it down.
[03:27:57] markspieth2: jpabq: no progress since my initial attempt. too much else going on unfortunately. I have code to switch the display to 4k but it may be in the wrong place or I need to defer qt start until the switch is complete which takes about 3 secs.
[03:31:57] jpabq: markspieth: I understand the busy part ;-)
[04:04:39] gigem: markspieth2: Okay. I might have to check the git logs to see where they came from. Regardless, we need to resolve the reversed issue some way. I wonder if it's a software decoding issue. On my Chrombox testing, I only tried
[04:05:17] gigem: kernel deint with vaapi2 decoding. I'll have to try it with software decoding.
[04:22:42] jpabq: I am setting up a new fronted, and I cannot find
[04:23:43] jpabq: Where to adjust the seek and jump amounts when watching. Can someone remind me where that is?
[04:24:58] gigem: jpabq: They're in the default playgroup.
[04:25:06] jpabq: I expected it to be in Playback > Seeking but the options are not there.
[04:25:33] jpabq: Ah! Thank you.

[14:28:07] gigem: markspieth, jpabq: I briefly tried software decoding and opengl kernel deint on my chromebox. It didn't show the reversed field problem. It looks like it's an issue specific to the shield.
[14:41:35] peterbennett: gigem: So where is the "reversed field" setting?
[14:41:59] peterbennett: gigem: I assume this means you should select that if using OpenGL on the sheld

[15:11:42] gigem: peterbennett: In the osd, choose something like video > advanced > scan. It's at the same level where you choose the deinterlacer. I previously though it was just informational. Until jpabq mentioned, I didn't know you could overrride the autodtection by choosing one of the options.
[15:12:47] gigem: peterbennett: I beleive you only need to select interfaced reversed when using the kernel hw deint. The others seem to work fine.
[15:45:52] stuarta: that implies kernel hw deint is broken?
[15:51:28] gigem: Possibly. I don't know enough to definitively point the finger at kernel deint or nvidia's opengl. Since we have no control over the latter, the fix will like have to be in the former, though.
[15:52:44] stuarta: and i'd be surprised if nvidia's opengl is vastly different (and broken) on the shield compared to their other implementations
[15:53:01] stuarta: they do a *lot* of work in GL
[15:57:33] gigem: You'd also think they could decode mpeg2, too! :)
[15:58:28] stuarta: hah
[16:02:02] kwizart: hum, I don't think the shield has the same video acceleration than normal desktop
[16:03:32] kwizart: there is support for tegra-vde engine (in staging) in the kernel, but I don't think the shield is supported
[16:07:38] kwizart: and if it's the shield X1, then the video engine is totally different than others soc ? So unless using downstream code...
[16:10:30] gigem: The engines might be different, but the result of the pixelation problem to which I was referring looks the same on the shield as it does on a gt430/gt730.
[16:10:45] peterbennett: kwizart: The shield has the same irritating mpeg2 bug that the $20 low end NVidia card has.
[16:12:54] peterbennett: gigem: I normally set linear blend deinterlace with OpenGL, it seems to work better.
[16:13:01] jpabq: It has the same irritating mpeg2 bug that my nVidia 1130 graphics card has.
[16:13:03] gigem: The gl kernel deint was added by Mark Kendall in 2010. His last commit was in 2012 so he's probably no longer around.
[16:13:35] jpabq: Yeah, Kendall is long gone.
[16:14:19] gigem: peterbennett: Yes, that's what I was using too. I was mistaken about using kernel. However if you set interlaced reversed, then kernel looks good and should be better, albeit slightly, than linear blend.
[16:16:15] gigem: Was he Robert McNamara's friend who left with Robert?
[16:18:39] jpabq: Yes. Mark Kendall got very upset that "we" would not rip out all of the Xv code, so he decided to start his own project from scratch. At this point, I agree that a lot of that old cruft should be removed, but it was quite time, then.
[16:19:22] jpabq: s/was quite/was not quite/
[16:29:04] gigem: jpabq: Yes, I remember the events. I wasn't sure about his name. I believe his own project was called something like Torx. I checked on it periodically, but it never went anywhere.

[20:12:35] jpabq: BTW, I figured out my font problem (at 3am) on Android. Android seems to reject some fonts. If I switched it to "Droid Sans" then it displays correctly. I was trying to use Liberation Sans, and I don't know why it would refuse to render that one, but changing out the font fixed the problem.
