[13:32:58] stuartm: stuarta: there'll be others, dump the transportids from a fresh scan and compare
[13:33:14] stuartm: or we stop messing about checking the transport id and just look at the network id
[13:34:03] stuartm: I believe the reason we didn't in the past was concern about networks reusing ID 2 but I don't know if any examples have been found in the wild

[14:24:48] peterbennett1: Can somebody tell me, is the new release called 0.28 or 28.0 ?
[14:34:17] Merlin83b2: 0.28
[14:39:05] peterbennett1: Use GBee has changed some wiki pages to 28.0 from 0.28. Anybody know who GBee is?
[14:39:26] stuartm: no idea
[14:39:39] stuartm: oh, wait, that's me
[14:39:55] peterbennett1: =-O
[14:40:20] stuartm: new release is 28.0 – but for packaging reasons and because the branches were named months ago you'll see 0.28 too
[14:40:43] stuartm: actually for the sake of accuracy it would be 0.28.0
[14:41:28] peterbennett1: stuartm: How should we name it in the wiki and the web pages?
[14:41:44] stuartm: 28.0
[14:42:41] stuartm: could just name it 28 but then it doesn't look like a version number so you'd end up saying "version 28", and 28.0 is just shorter
[14:43:03] stuartm: not to mention the fact that 28.1 will probably follow pretty soon
[14:43:04] Merlin83b2: Announcement blog post and release notes say 0.28
[14:43:18] peterbennett1: I assume you will be changing https://www.mythtv.org/ to say 28.0 then.
[14:43:54] peterbennett1: The announcement from yesterday says 0.28
[14:44:25] stuartm: actually, release notes say 28.0, but home page does say 0.28, the decision to rename to 28.0 was a unilateral one and stuarta wasn't completely onboard
[14:44:32] stuartm: so I staged a coup
[14:44:34] gedakc (gedakc!~gedakc@d162-157-118-249.abhsia.telus.net) has joined #mythtv
[14:45:00] Merlin83b2: Which part of the release notes? https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Release_Notes_-_0.28 says 0.28 all over it.
[14:45:10] Merlin83b2 is now known as Merlin83b
[14:46:20] peterbennett1: So for the wiki I will use 28.0, but I assume that the tag and branch names in git will continue as 0.28, so still use that where applicable.
[14:46:26] stuartm: Merlin83b: it says it in exactly two places – one of which is a link to a page with it in the name, the other is in brackets as an AKA
[14:46:34] stuartm: peterbennett1: yes
[14:46:52] stuartm: for 29, the branch names drop the 0.
[14:47:41] Merlin83b: stuartm: On the version I have (loaded a few minutes ago, that page says 0.28 7 times, and 28.0 no times.
[14:47:51] peterbennett1: so fixes/29
[14:49:18] stuartm: Merlin83b: guess it's cached an old version
[14:50:26] stuartm: peterbennett1: in theory yes, however the fixes branch won't be created until 29 is nearing release
[14:50:59] stuartm: until then it's just master, tagged as v29pre
[14:54:26] stuarta: well technically i objected on packaging and soname grounds, but have agreed for the next release
[15:07:54] peterbennett1: On the wiki, maybe we should remove "Official Documentation" from the nav bar and perhaps add "Release Notes" instead.
[15:17:59] stuartm: stuarta: and I took those as technical objections, what's stamped on a compiled lib doesn't necessarily reflect the common version name
[15:18:25] stuartm: in fact our so names have never matched our version numbering, which leads to it's own confusion
[15:22:16] stuartm: point being it's accepted that we can't change branch names and libraries at this stage, but we can still publically call the release whatever we want – case in point, Ubuntu Xenial

[21:36:58] tgm4883: stuartm: so version 0.29 is actually just going to be 29?
[21:37:08] ** tgm4883 grumbles a bit **
[21:37:58] gregL (gregL!~greg@cpe-74-76-121-109.nycap.res.rr.com) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[21:38:24] dekarl: I'm just looking for the last time we talked about the version number.
[21:39:15] stuartm: tgm4883: 0.28 is 28
[21:39:27] stuartm: it was that or go to 1.0
[21:39:45] stuartm: but that seemed like a huge backwards step psychologically
[21:39:46] tgm4883: stuartm: I would have preferred a bit more lead time than a day's notice :/
[21:40:06] tgm4883: and a day before final freeze too
[21:40:15] stuartm: tgm4883: makes no difference if the packages are called 0.28 or 28
[21:40:36] tgm4883: stuartm: well that's good, because there is zero chance that's changing
[21:40:52] stuartm: this is about what we call it publicly not what appears in version strings that no-one looks at
[21:41:03] dekarl: see our internal list, august 2013. (aka, when 0.27 was being finished)
[21:41:16] tgm4883: stuartm: to be fair, we have the repos to think about as well
[21:41:59] tgm4883: graphics and version selection boxes in MCC come to mind
[21:42:02] tgm4883: specifically http://www.mythbuntu.org/repos
[21:42:29] superm1: i think that packaging helper scripts are going to be confused too
[21:42:49] superm1: not unsurmountable to resolve, just work
[21:43:08] tgm4883: stuartm: Is there anything in code that has changed in teh version stuff for 0.28?
[21:43:19] stuartm: more confused had we gone to 1.0 no doubt – and 6 months ago we were dead set on calling this release 1.0
[21:43:26] stuartm: tgm4883: no
[21:43:43] tgm4883: So then at least for the near future our build scripts won't die
[21:43:50] stuartm: correct
[21:43:53] tgm4883: and we can do another upload today (unless superm1 already has)
[21:44:00] superm1: i haven't done one yet
[21:44:03] tgm4883: ok
[21:44:06] superm1: need to sort out that delta for php5->php7
[21:44:09] superm1: and how to handle migration
[21:44:12] ** tgm4883 sets down his pitchfork **
[21:44:15] Tobbe5178 (Tobbe5178!~asdf@2001:2002:4e46:4de8:c821:35f6:bc6:3f7d) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[21:44:19] tgm4883: ah right, I need to look at this still
[21:44:29] superm1: if you can please do
[21:44:35] tgm4883: stuartm: is this what nicolas is grumbling about on the mailing list?
[21:44:39] tgm4883: or something else
[21:46:29] stuartm: knightr: I'm sorry you're upset about this. For whatever it's worth, this subject was discussed among the groups many, many times and the concensus the last few times was that the numbering we have no made no sense and was even detrimental, creating the perception of MythTV being in permanent alpha status
[21:48:54] gary_buhrmaster: What's in a name? That which we call a rose .....
[21:49:19] stuartm: there were always just two ways to go – jump to 1.0 or drop the leading zero with either 28 or 2.8. Now 1.0 had the effect of making MythTV seem like something that had 'just' reached the point where it had always been aiming rather than a mature product which had produced many stable releases
[21:52:15] stuartm: truth is, we could procrastinate for another 10 years or someone could make the call, and I made it, whether I had the right to do so or not.
[21:54:50] dekarl: fwiw I'm all for "just drop the 0. prefix and move on". been for it 32 months ago, too. And lets get rid of the version in the library names, we have no benefit from it, but every time the version changes all packing and update scripts break apart.
[21:57:04] stuartm: loath as I am to make unilateral decisions – I was after all the one who suggested a democracy complete with a voting process after Isaac left the project – now more than ever we have to make bold moves. I don't think anyone really wanted to repeat the same old debates only for absolutely nothing to happen because no-one was willing to offend
[21:57:58] xris: stuartm: had a chat with knightr before he sent the email and I think the issue was more with "decided in IRC" vs using email so people in different timezones, etc. could have a chance to weigh in.
[21:58:31] stuartm: xris: long time no see
[21:58:42] xris: I've been here for ages. I just don't read/talk much.  ;)
[22:00:56] stuartm: well I think the point almost was not to let people weigh in, because what historically what tends to happen after a lengthy debate is absolutely nothing. In this case in particular it was a call made in the moment, but with a very long history behind it
[22:03:46] xris: it did sort of surprise me since there's been a lot of talk on the list about releasing 0.28. for us lurkers, it might be nice to at least send a ping when decisions are made in IRC.
[22:04:06] xris: that said, I am just a lurker. my mythbox can't even plug into my new tv at the moment...  :)
[22:06:03] letifosiferrari (letifosiferrari!~letifosif@216.207.42.140) has quit (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
[22:06:31] stuartm: yeah, maybe it could have been handled better and if I wasn't so exhausted I probably would have been less rash.
[22:07:46] gary_buhrmaster: Debates are fine things, but if the point is to make the decision after airing the positions/concerns, a decision should be made. In the many cases where the decision is really arbitrary, whoever commits first wins. I have no problem with that in any project.

[22:09:33] amessina (amessina!~amessina@unaffiliated/amessina) has joined #mythtv
[22:10:20] stuartm: we had reached a consensus last year to change the version numbering with this release, and we also decided not to pre-announce that because I was concerned about raising expectations unduly – for example having people think that this release would be somehow more impressive than the last because we'd decided to drop the pre-release numbering
[22:12:10] knightr_ (knightr_!~knightr@mythtv/developer/knightr) has quit (Client Quit)
[22:12:32] stuartm: however it's also true that when I and others started new jobs and had less time available that plan started to melt away, I think I'm even on record as saying that I didn't want to release something with a new version number until certain key new features were complete (which they aren't). So I can't blame anyone for feeling confused
[22:15:10] stuartm: now I've just realised I've managed to become distracted from the work I was doing and I have a deadline tomorrow morning. So please excuse me if I step away from IRC – not attempting to have the last word on the subject, I just really have to go
[22:16:27] xris: I know how that goes.  :)
