[15:09:50] gigem: gary_buhrmaster: I just got the dreaded "Welcome to Frontier" email. I wonder how long now before my channels go away.
[15:41:33] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Rumor is that verizon will actually be continuing to provide the actual video head end service for some forseeable future for FiOS customers (not entirely surprising, since verizon is keeping their SHEs, and the VHOs depend on the SHEs).
[15:44:00] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Not only that, but I strongly suspect that Frontier will change as little as possible until the dust settles on the transaction.
[15:45:02] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: I will note that business class FiOS internet customers are going to have to change their static IPs (at some point), as Verizon is not passing on those assets in the sale.
[15:47:12] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: And (5th hand?) rumor is that Frontier does not yet have a complete compliment of "engagement managers" for all the business class customers hired yet to smooth the transition.
[15:50:33] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: So, my best guess is that even if Frontier has a plan to encrypt for FiOS (and the justification is far less than for their other assets, except for the argument of consistency), nothing will happen for a year or so.
[15:51:29] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Of course, since I have no special access to any more information than you, I am just picking those numbers out of a dark place.
[15:58:15] tonsofpcs: can someone confirm how commflag works on MPEG2 programs? Does it 'play' through the elementary streams and flag times that it thinks commercials [transitions] occur? If so, I *think* I found a bug in it but I can't say for sure unless I can get the commflag data and compare it against timestamps from an analyzer
[16:00:10] letifosi_ (letifosi_!~letifosif@216.207.42.134) has joined #mythtv
[16:01:10] gary_buhrmaster: tonsofpcs: Essentially, yes, however there are multiple different methods to detect transitions. Go look at the mythcommflag source to evaluate the various algorithms. Some work better than others on certain source material.
[16:02:40] gary_buhrmaster: tonsofpcs: And testing changes in detection requires a large amount of source material (in the past, improvements for one source has sometimes made things worse for others).
[16:03:10] letifosiferrari (letifosiferrari!~letifosif@216.207.42.132) has quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[16:07:13] tonsofpcs: gary_buhrmaster: ok, so what I think I'm seeing is that mythcommflag is writing out timestamps based on playback of access units at a constant rate but with data missing and playback based on PTS the commercials are 'skipped' early as the (PTS) timestamp comes sooner than the actual access unit that caused the flag. At least, that's what I'm guessing from the symptoms.
[16:14:26] gregL (gregL!~greg@cpe-74-76-121-109.nycap.res.rr.com) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[16:17:02] tonsofpcs: it's happening with ATSC recordings from a source that has errors (I'm guessing they're receive issues but can't say for sure)
[16:18:51] gary_buhrmaster: tonsofpcs: are you testing with master? I have this recollection that some fixes (which may or may not improve things) were applied a number of months ago to the master branch.
[16:19:59] gary_buhrmaster: tonsofpcs: I do not recall them addressing issues like you are mentioning, but since I do not commflag, I mostly do not pay attention to them anyway.
[16:24:37] gary_buhrmaster: tonsofpc: I also seem to recall mentions of sources with discontinuities have also had various reports of "strangeness" with playback.
[16:25:31] gary_buhrmaster: tonsofpcs: in any case, you are certainly beyond my knowledge of the area.
[16:27:28] gigem: gary_buhrmaster: Yeah, I know the low level changes won't come for a while. They'll have enough to deal with without intentionally adding other problems. SHE, VHO? I'm not familiar with the terminology. I was just wondering about the IP address space. Do you know if Frontier at least uses publicly routable addresses? I certainly hope they don't stick everybody behind a huge NAT.
[16:31:56] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Verizon speak. SHE = Super Head End. VHO = Video Hub Office. A good look can be found at: http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/17/an-inside- . . . d-video-hub/
[16:33:52] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Frontier is (initially) borrowing Verizon IP space for the transition (but at some point they will have to return it, or purchase it, and I doubt the space verizon uses is separated to allow selling a contiguous block even if they were willing to).
[16:35:20] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Frontier has not announced whether they will obtain IPv4 numbers via the market, or attempt CGNAT. Both have costs. In the end, providing native IPv6 is the answer, but, wait for it...........
[16:36:56] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: it turns out that (at least some) of the existing GPON equipment (in the vaults/pedestals), and some of the ONTs (on your wall) cannot do IPv6 properly. And replacing it all is not going to be cheap.
[16:37:58] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: And no matter what Frontier says about investing in the infrastructure, they have a lot of debt to pay off which is going to restrict how much they can spend.
[16:38:30] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: (well, technically, borrow to spend, but it is the same thing).
[16:39:20] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: There is an interesting disagreement in the financial markets as to whether frontier is a good investment (some say buy, some say sell).
[16:42:13] tonsofpcs: gary_buhrmaster: I'm not on master. If I could run mythcommflag from master witthout upgrading everything I'd try that. I don't think I can handle master with kodi as a client doing everything (if I can, I'll gladly upgrade)
[16:42:40] tonsofpcs: gary_buhrmaster: it is a source with discontinuity, just based on the discontinuities I am seeing this appears to be a good reason why
[16:43:28] tonsofpcs: ugh, IPv6 adoption makes me cry
[16:43:42] tonsofpcs: the equipment manufacturers need to stop selling equipment that can't handle v6
[16:43:59] tonsofpcs: otherwise you get people like my boss that won't pay an extra $20 for a switch that can handle v6 because it isn't needed now...
[16:50:29] gigem: gary_buhrmaster: Interesting stuff. Thanks. I'm not holding my breath on IPv6, BTW.
[16:52:34] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Not that I am not (have not been) a verizon/frontier customer (I was 15+ years ago, a POTS customer of a predecessor org), so anything I say is from a distance, and likely has large error bars.
[16:53:23] gigem: gary_buhrmaster: Perhaps, but you'
