[12:04:20] knightr: dekarl, because it seems some grabbers (apparently the UK one is one of them) don't feed the category properly and the person who patched around this wanted the solution to be used to other locales as well...
[12:05:32] knightr: if we have to patch around grabber issues instead of having them fixed upstream than at least the solution should work for other locales...
[12:07:44] knightr: the string used should have been declared specifically for that however and not simply come from QObject but this can be fixed another time...

[14:04:06] dekarl: knightr: thats the thing, there is no defined way to do that. so everyone is fiddling around in their little data bubble to keep their stuff going with every single fix potentially breaking it for the rest of the world...
[14:05:03] knightr: dekarl, why wasn't this submitted upstream, I don't get why we are the ones who end up patching...
[14:05:08] dekarl: mythtv started with "whatever DD does", then the UK and other grabbers tried to "do whatever it takes to make mythtv nice"
[14:05:52] dekarl: now there is a new grabber in town that handles the upstream guide data as "one pristine truth"
[14:06:12] dekarl: this change in design obviously causes some issues :)
[14:07:06] dekarl: knightr: that's simple, we appear to be the only ones that care (well, there is a small group of projects, but there is no concentrated work towards a common solution)
[14:08:26] knightr: John's latest patch is the safest bet for now because if other grabbers need this patch as well (and they most likely do) it's the one which is the closest to the original behavior...
[14:08:58] knightr: his previous patch would have worked for English speaking locales but none of the other locales...
[14:10:04] knightr: what grabber is that? (the new one)

[14:16:11] dekarl: we could write down our assumptions into a "make your guide work with mythtv" interface definition
[14:17:46] dekarl: and leave all adaptions between the guide souce and the grabber and our import to the grabber / a set of augmenters (a new generic feature in newer xmltv versions. basically a generalisation of functions in the old UK grabber)
[14:18:41] knightr: ok, locale specific...
[14:19:11] knightr: has it replaced the old UK one (rt, RadioTimes?)?
[14:19:38] dekarl: no :)
[14:19:51] knightr: that would be best, we should not have to do that kind of patching around the data we import...
[14:20:25] knightr: yikes, so we have to live with two of them for the UK...

[14:23:03] knightr: how long would we have to support the legacy grabbers?
[14:23:23] knightr: do we have a minimum version requirement for XMLTV?
[14:25:14] knightr: (and how long would it take for them to apply our recommandations? (-; (-; (-; )
[14:31:30] dekarl: thats easy. just rip it out after the release
[14:31:47] dekarl: adoption rate of new versions of xmltv is basically close to zero

[14:38:53] knightr: I was checking what the current version was after you said which version you got traffic from...
[14:43:55] dekarl: I would not word it that hard, but our current solution is patching the input data to fix on use case but breaking others in turn. I'd prefer to communitcate a proper way of feeding the guide so people can adapt their locale's data sources, if they are now the ones that are favoured by our hacks. Otherwise their setups might break
[14:45:27] dekarl: at the moment we just shift bugs/issues from the left to the right, until we get tickets from their and shift them on to the next group
[14:48:19] dekarl: Its the same with the EIT ingester. When I bit the bullet and implemented a feature to fix the polish guide that broke others. And that was with multiple tests to avoid breaking other guides ;)

[14:58:10] knightr: minus of course lowercasing the information...

[16:19:34] dekarl: I was wondering about this string when updating the translation. Is this really unused or am I just not seeing some dynamic magic? http://paste.ubuntu.com/15231721/
[16:23:18] knightr: dekarl, I see from your diff that the code was removed, no?
[16:23:40] dekarl: yes, I removed it when "git grep" did not find any reference and ran a test compile
[16:24:45] knightr: this looks like a setting page though not in the same place as the rest...
[16:26:05] knightr: if this was used, you would see it referred elsewhere, at least the way these pages are usually done...
[16:26:52] dekarl: ok, can rip it out after release / merge of settings rewrite, whichever comes first ;)
[16:26:54] knightr: I have code that I made at work which magically (-; calls stuff but I have never seen it's equivalent in MythTV (yet!)
[16:27:53] knightr: (I use reflection to call some setters to populate an object, you don't actually see where it's called from, there are no reference to it...)
[16:28:25] knightr: we should really think about activating the warnings for unused methods/functions...
[16:28:42] knightr: we probably some other dead wood elsewhere...
[16:28:56] dekarl: just looking at the next thing... HDHR locking, we have an undocumented reimplementation of "convert an integer to a hexadecimal string" in that... that all has to go if we really want to attract new people
[16:29:20] dekarl: +1 on unused code warnings
[16:30:10] knightr: I ripped out some stuff recently which was no longer called ever since we removed support from upgrading from very old database schema...
[16:30:46] knightr: this would have been picked up by unused code warnings too, just like the method you digged up...
[16:32:46] knightr: dekarl, that HDHR method, is this in our code our SiliconDust's?

[19:04:29] knightr: paul-h, depreciated doesn't necessarily mean unused, it considers both as being the same thing as far as reporting them is concerned?
[19:05:01] dekarl: jya mentioned that ffmpeg is getting rid of old habits, too. pushed us above the 1000 warnings mark
[19:08:06] stuartm: unused doesn't necessarily mean cruft – I habitually add methods to classes that I expect to be used or useful in the future, usually I'd encourage forward thinking in creating APIs since the person who first designed the class will have the best idea about how it should all work

[19:33:35] stuartm: yes there is markup to do that, it's just a lot of work – which is fine if someone wants to take that on and they know the difference between obsolete code which should be removed and that which should be kept
