[11:44:41] warpme: Huh – I finally discovered reason why some of my users of myth are reporting BE deadlocks: #12636
[11:44:41] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/12636 **
[11:45:02] dekarl: lomion_0815: that was fast! next up #9480 ^^ (I'm not seeing why the commits didn't work out)
[11:45:02] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/9480 **
[11:46:18] warpme: May somebody look in this as BE deadlocks are quite spectacullar show stoppers :-(
[11:46:55] gigem (gigem!~david@mythtv/developer/gigem) has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[11:51:37] stuarta: there's a lot of QWaitCondition::wait, and locks happening
[11:53:11] Roklobotomy: warpme: does CPU go through the roof?
[11:56:02] warpme: stuarta: right. traces are from zaping livetv. Looking on BE log around 08:24:55 signal monitor started. it timeouted at 08:25:00 – but it think reason was end of program  – not timeout due not finding PMT,etc. But in the same time there was livetv trasition – so I suspect livetv transitioned while signalmonitor timeouted. Just pure theory....
[11:57:09] warpme: Roklobotomy: absolutelly no. BE is quite fast (i7)
[11:57:29] stuarta: warpme: he's asking because it's the difference between a deadlock and a livelock
[11:58:12] stuarta: deadlock = 2+ waiters => no cpu usage, livelock -> fighting between threads -> high cpu
[11:58:45] warpme: is it possible that BE just generated such load spike?
[11:59:14] stuarta: when it's "locked" it'll be in one of the 2 states

[12:01:54] warpme: oh got it: I didn't check but SSH responsivness was as usual when CPU is in idle. By this I think when deadlock was – CPU was practically idle
[12:02:24] Roklobotomy: ok, check with htop
[12:02:44] warpme: sure. next time i'll do this by default :-)

[17:35:42] Tobbe5178: lots of complaints about not being able to get the signal
[17:36:29] Tobbe5178: was thinking of looking at it over the weekend, i suspect mythtv is still using dvbv3 api and not v5 and i thing my usb dvb-t2 device have only partial v3 api support
[17:36:43] Tobbe5178: even femon complains but not the dvbv5 specific tools

[20:54:31] Tobbe5178: stuarta: it is a CT2–4650 dvb-t2 usb device with CI interface
[20:54:48] Tobbe5178: i got more than just one problem right now
[20:54:53] stuarta: kk, not the same as mine. what kernel rev?
[20:55:33] Tobbe5178: the 4650 i got was a newer hw revision, so no drivers, but a small patch fixed it (just added a new id to the driver)
[20:55:41] Tobbe5178: so i'm using media_build
[20:56:01] Tobbe5178: but mediabuild broke too a while ago, so driver dont load any more :(
[20:56:18] tris (tris!tristan@camel.ethereal.net) has joined #mythtv
[20:56:19] Tobbe5178: and if i go back to an earlier version something is odd
[20:56:30] gary_buhrmaster: Per the official docs, EWRONGWINDOW is often user error. If the EWRONGWINDOW is believed to be erroneously reported the recommendation is to replace the keyboard and mouse as a diagnostic step....
[20:56:42] Tobbe5178: driver only works once after module load, then no signal
[20:56:53] stuarta: !zap gary_buhrmaster

[20:57:07] Tobbe5178: anyway, the signal errors i belive is due to mythtv using the old dvb api
[20:57:22] Tobbe5178: and i got that too with my other dvb-t2 card (dvbsky)
[20:57:56] Tobbe5178: but, i need to use new mytthv too since nowdays they have removed the dvb-t/t2 auto switching in the kernel drivers
[20:58:03] Tobbe5178: that was considered a hack
[20:58:14] stuarta: yeah, i added support for that
[20:58:31] stuarta: and it's my t2 card that keeps locking my kernel
[20:58:36] Tobbe5178: i suspect dvbchannel needs to be updated a bit, at the very least adjust the signal ioctl call
[20:58:42] Tobbe5178: to use dvbv5 api
[20:59:04] Tobbe5178: that should stop the complaints but not sure if it will solve the problem of scanning channels
[20:59:11] Tobbe5178: (no lock at all right now)
[20:59:27] Tobbe5178: no lock in mythtv-setup but dvbv5 tools can scan and lock
[21:00:02] Tobbe5178: v3 api is depreciated too, see: https://linuxtv.org/docs/libdvbv5/index.html
[21:01:37] Tobbe5178: i got issues with my dvb-t2 cards for a long time
[21:02:00] Tobbe5178: this is why i bought the ct2–4650 thinking it already had drivers (wasnt the case)
[21:02:52] Tobbe5178: dvbsky only works with dvbskys own drivers with a binary blob, official drivers is broken since several kernels back (<4.0 was working i think)
[21:04:47] stuarta: given we already support dvb-s2, we can't be completely ignoring the dvbv5 api?
[21:07:18] Tobbe5178: i havent checked all of the code
[21:07:36] Tobbe5178: i gues there might be some v3 parts
[21:07:49] Tobbe5178: all i found that looked a bit odd was the function to read the frontend signal
[21:07:55] Tobbe5178: that one i think is v3
[21:08:13] Tobbe5178: and thats the cause of the errors (i think, havent tested to rewrite it yet)
[21:08:52] stuarta: might explain the crap signal monitoring i was seeing yesterday
[21:09:16] Tobbe5178: DVBChannel::GetSignalStrength
[21:09:21] Tobbe5178: plus other functionis in there
[21:09:33] Tobbe5178: FE_READ_SIGNAL_STRENGTH ioctl i think is v3
[21:09:46] Tobbe5178: was doing some reading on v5 api and it looked different
[21:10:12] Tobbe5178: passing in a struct to read properties and they also fixed so signal can be in % or db
[21:10:39] Tobbe5178: i think the v3 api had some abiguities of what the FE_READ_SIGNAL_STRENGTH returned
[21:16:02] stuarta: okay, i think we just use the v3 api since the calls all use a "struct dvb_v5_fe_parms" and we just use a filedescriptor
[21:22:14] Roklobotomy (Roklobotomy!~blah@ppp118-209-116-42.lns20.mel4.internode.on.net) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[21:23:13] Tobbe5178: i dont fully understand the v5 stuff but i think it is all based on sending in an array of different things you want to read (like properties) and then you get back all of them at once
[21:27:39] stuarta: so from what i've just looked at, it's not something we will get done for 0.28, it'll need to be worked on once that's released, and then we can work out what to do with it after that
[21:27:52] Tobbe5178: yes
[21:28:22] Tobbe5178: i will experiment a little and see what i find out
[21:28:37] stuarta: i'll open a tracking ticket to remind us it needs doing
[21:29:59] Tobbe5178: we should probably check the code for v3 api calls and check if something needs adjusting
[21:30:22] Tobbe5178: i'm not so familiar (yet) with the design of the cards and channel code in mythtv
[21:31:01] stuarta: it's not the easiest thing to understand
[21:31:30] Tobbe5178: i dont know how the linux media devs handle backwards compatibility with newer drivers but i suspect some v3 stuff is not working any more
[21:31:57] Tobbe5178: yes, not so easy to understand
[21:32:14] Tobbe5178: ive tried before and parialy got some understanding but then things changed
[21:32:29] Tobbe5178: also i need to retest the http streaming again
[21:33:16] ** stuarta facepalms at the channel icon schema **
[21:33:21] Tobbe5178: sent an patch a very long time ago that has bittrotted a lot and i think dekarl or someone redid it (saw a commit about it some time ago)
[21:33:45] stuarta: apologies for anything like that which has suffered
[21:34:05] Tobbe5178: channel icons i have never fully understood how they got there and why mythweb always had problems reading the right files
[21:34:32] stuarta: how they get there is the do a lookup to a central service we run, and then pulls the icons
[21:34:42] stuarta: i'm working on rewriting the central service
[21:35:10] Tobbe5178: ok, in my case i end up with icons for mythtv that works but mythweb never finds them unless i manualy copy over the downloaded icon files
[21:35:17] Tobbe5178: never bothered to find out why
[21:35:25] Tobbe5178: since they dont change that often
[21:35:47] stuarta: mythweb is probably looking in the wrong spot, channel icons was converted to using a storage group. i suspect mythweb needs them somewhere local
[21:36:11] stuarta: patches welcome to make mythweb pull from SG
[21:36:39] stuarta: bah this schema is so shit
[21:37:09] Tobbe5178: :)
[21:37:16] stuarta: it should be netid, tsid, sid, not tsid, netid, sid
[21:38:07] gary_buhrmaster: A long time ago I looked at the mythweb channel icon issue, but as mythweb was going away RSN I found my excuse (well, there were many, include ENOTIME, but this is the one I stuck with) to ignore the problem.
[21:39:32] stuarta: a lot of people, me included, quite like it, so whilst it's not being developed, i'll happily apply patches for it

[21:40:20] stuarta: at least our arch users manage to write the patch to convert it to php7
[21:41:10] gary_buhrmaster: Oh, I do like it. And use it. But it was always low on the list of things to bother to fix since there were workarounds that were good enough for now.
[21:41:28] stuarta: yeah, certainly not a priority of mine
[21:42:45] gary_buhrmaster: Yep, patches are good. Every so often I look at trac for patches that have languished for one reason or another. Some at this point probably should be closed as "wont-fix".
