[08:38:20] dekarl: gary_buhrmaster: hmm, a core dump of /bin/sleep would be 620kb res + 520kb shared memory? or 7.5mb of virtual memory? (using random top numbers from ubuntu on amd64 to get a feeling for the size of the core dump) if we add the shell its about the same. so that could really be it

[14:06:04] gary_buhrmaster: taylorr: Re: 75fps. Typically (and I am not sure about the Intel designs), there is a dedicated decode unit (part of the VPU, next/attached to the GPU) on these chips, and they have a fixed capability. So more EUs may not matter.
[14:09:37] gary_buhrmaster: taylorr: On some designs the VPU is also responsible for various post processing functions. In others (at least some) post processing is done in the GPU (after the VPU renders the frame).
[14:21:57] gary_buhrmaster: taylorr: The various vendors seem to not make it easy to determine the actual architectural details (or the capabilities) for their video processing units. Or maybe I have been looking in the wrong places.

[15:27:56] taylorr: gary_buhrmaster: interesting, I've got an i3 NUC on the way so I'll see if it has the same issue
[16:06:47] gary_buhrmaster: taylorr: Note that Intel has marketed some of their higher end devices for transcoding, so presumably the decoders/encoders in those chips are faster/more powerful/able to leap taller buildings (part of the Intel Media Server solutions).
[16:07:22] gary_buhrmaster: taylorr: I do not recall seeing specific benchmarks on the various processors (perhaps available if you purchase the various SDKs that Intel offers).
[16:13:59] gary_buhrmaster: taylorr: FD: other than doing some research on this some time ago, I am really not an expert here, and have not followed the current state of the art. So take anything I say with not a pinch, but a tablespoon, of salt.

[23:24:32] gary_buhrmaster: dekarl: Your jurisdictional laws always vary. Just adding the TM grants you rights. But if push comes to shove. the (r) gets you a lot more. But (in some jurisdictions) the first registered filer wins, so I could register in some states and I now "own" the name.
[23:26:23] gary_buhrmaster: dekarl: Your lawyers opinion may vary. And I have even less depth of knowledge outside of the US. If it really matters, talk to a real IP lawyer.
